We consider specific examples of $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical models and list out all the novel symmetries. In each case, we show the existence of two sets of discrete symmetries that correspond to the Hodge duality operator of differential geometry. Thus, we are able to provide a proof of the conjecture which endorses the existence of more than one discrete symmetry transformation as the analogue of Hodge duality operation. Finally, we extend our analysis to a more general case and derive on-shell nilpotent symmetries within the framework of supervariable approach.
By exploiting the supersymmetric invariant restrictions on the chiral and anti-chiral supervariables, we derive the off-shell nilpotent symmetry transformations for a specific (0 + 1)-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical model which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold (parametrized by a bosonic variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables (θ, \barθ). We also provide the geometrical meaning to the symmetry transformations. Finally, we show that this specific N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model is a model for Hodge theory.
We exploit the supersymmetric invariant restrictions (SUSYIRs) on the supervariables to derive the nilpotent N = 2 SUSY transformations for the supersymmetric quantum mechanical model of the motion of a charged particle in the X-Y plane (where the magnetic field (B_z) is applied along the Z-direction). The supervariables are defined on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by a bosonic "time" variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = {\barθ}^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). We take the (anti-)chiral supervariables for our purpose so that the nilpotency property …
We revisit the novel symmetries in $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical (QM) models by considering specific examples of coupled systems. Further, we extend our analysis to a general case and list out all the novel symmetries. In each case, we show the existence of two sets of discrete symmetries that correspond to the Hodge duality operator of differential geometry. Thus, we are able to provide a proof of the conjecture which points out the existence of more than one set of discrete symmetry transformations corresponding to the Hodge duality operator. Moreover, we derive …
We exploit the standard techniques of the supervariable approach to derive the nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a toy model of the Hodge theory (i.e. a rigid rotor) and provide the geometrical meaning and interpretation to them. Furthermore, we also derive the nilpotent (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations for this theory within the framework of the above supervariable approach. We capture the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariance of the Lagrangian of our present theory within the framework of augmented supervariable formalism. We als…
Using the supersymmetric (SUSY) invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral supervariables, we derive the off-shell nilpotent symmetries of the general one (0 + 1)-dimensional N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical (QM) model which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold (parametrized by a bosonic variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθwith θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). We provide the geometrical meanings to the two SUSY transformations of our present theory which are valid for any arbitrary type of superpotential. We express the conserved charges and Lagrangian …
We derive the on-shell as well as off-shell nilpotent supersymmetric (SUSY) symmetry transformations for the N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) free SUSY particle by exploiting the SUSY invariant restrictions (SUSYIRs) on the (anti-)chiral supervariables of the SUSY theory that is defined on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold (parametrized by a bosonic variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθwith θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). Within the framework of our novel approach, we express the Lagrangian and conserved SUSY charges in terms of…
We carry out the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) quantization of the one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) model of a free massive spinning relativistic particle (i.e. a supersymmetric system) by exploiting its classical infinitesimal and continuous reparameterization symmetry transformations. We use the modified Bonora-Tonin (BT) supervariable approach (MBTSA) to BRST formalism to obtain the nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations of the target space variables and the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction for the 1D model of our supersymmetric (SUSY) system. The nilpotent (…
We apply the supervariable approach to derive the proper quantum Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries for the 1D diffeomorphism invariant model of a free scalar relativistic particle by exploiting the infinitesimal classical reparameterization (i.e. 1D diffeomorphism) symmetry of this theory. We derive the conserved and off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges and prove their absolute anticommutativity property by using the virtues of Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction of our present theory. We establish the sanctity of the existence of CF-type restriction (i) by consideri…
We discuss both the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the cosmological Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) model with a differential gauge condition in the extended phase space. In this discussion, the presence of anti-BRST symmetry provides the complete geometrical description of BRST within the ambit of the supervariable approach. We derive the conserved (anti-)BRST charges for the FRW model using the celebrated Noether theorem and show the nilpotency and absolute anti-commutativity properties of these conserved charges within the re…
We demonstrate the existence of a set of novel discrete symmetry transformations in the case of an interacting N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical model of a system of an electron moving on a sphere in the background of a magnetic monopole and establish its interpretation in the language of differential geometry. These discrete symmetries are, over and above, the usual three continuous symmetries of the theory which together provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. We derive the nilpotent N = 2 SUSY transformations by exploiting our…
We discuss a set of novel discrete symmetry transformations of the N = 4 supersymmetric quantum mechanical model of a charged particle moving on a sphere in the background of Dirac magnetic monopole. The usual five continuous symmetries (and their conserved Noether charges) and two discrete symmetries together provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. We have also exploited the supervariable approach to derive the nilpotent N = 4 SUSY transformations and provided the geometrical interpretation in the language of translational generators …
We discuss a set of novel discrete symmetries of a free N = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical system which is the limiting case of a widely-studied interacting SUSY model of a charged particle constrained to move on a sphere in the background of a Dirac magnetic monopole. The usual continuous symmetries of this model provide the physical realization of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. The interplay between the novel discrete symmetries and usual continuous symmetries leads to the physical realization of relationship between the (co-)exterior derivatives of…
We reveal a dynamical SU(2) symmetry in the asymptotic description of supersymmetric matrix models. We also consider a recursive approach for determining the ground state, and point out some additional properties of the model(s).
Field theories with p-form gauge potentials can possess ``hidden'' symmetries leaving the field strengths invariant on-shell without being gauge symmetries on-shell. The relevance of such symmetries to supersymmetric models is discussed. They provide central charges of supersymmetry algebras, play a particular role in duality relations, and lead to peculiar interactions. A multiplet of N=2 supersymmetry in four dimensions with two hidden central charges is presented.
We investigate the additional symmetries of several supersymmetric KP hierarchies: the SKP hierarchy of Manin and Radul, the $\hbox{SKP}_2$ hierarchy, and the Jacobian SKP hierarchy. In all three cases we find that the algebra of symmetries is isomorphic to the algebra of superdifferential operators, or equivalently $\SW_{1+\infty}$. These results seem to suggest that despite their realization depending on the dynamics, the additional symmetries are kinematical in nature.
The Hilbert spaces of supersymmetric systems admit symmetries which are often related to the topology and geometry of the (target) field-space. Here, we study certain (2,2)-supersymmetric systems in 2-dimensional spacetime which are closely related to superstring models. They all turn out to posess some hitherto unexploited and geometrically and topologically unobstructed symmetries, providing new tools for studying the topology and geometry of superstring target spacetimes, and so the dynamics of the effective field theory in these.
S-dualities in scale invariant N=2 supersymmetric field theories are derived by embedding those theories in asymptotically free N=2 theories with higher rank gauge groups. S-duality transformations on the coupling of the scale invariant theory follow from global symmetries acting on the Coulomb branch of the higher rank theory. Since these global symmetries are exact in the asymptotically free theory, this shows that S-duality is an exact equivalence of N=2 theories and not just a property of their supersymmetric states.
We discuss various continuous and discrete symmetries of the supersymmetric simple harmonic oscillator (SHO) in one (0 + 1)-dimension of spacetime and show their relevance in the context of mathematics of differential geometry. We show the existence of a novel set of discrete symmetries in the theory which has, hitherto, not been discussed in the literature on theoretical aspects of SHO. We also point out the physical relevance of our present investigation.
We compute the form of the Lagrangian of N=1 supersymmetric theories with gauged axion symmetries. It turns out that there appear generalized Chern-Simons terms that were not considered in previous superspace formulations of general N=1 theories. Such gaugings appear in supergravities arising from flux compactifications of superstrings, as well as from Scherk-Schwarz generalized dimensional reduction in M-theory. We also present the dual superspace formulation where axion chiral multiplets are dualized into linear multiplets.
Supersymmetry is studied in 2+1 dimensions. In addition to the multiplets corresponding to those in 3+1 dimensions the Clifford algebra allows an extra set. When the extra chiral multiplet is included, formulating supersymmetric QED3 in the manner of Wess and Zumino yields a lagrangian with a richer 'chiral' symmetry than that derived from supersymmetric QED by dimensional reduction.
We analyze the global symmetries of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric mechanics involving $4n$-dimensional Quaternion-Kähler (QK) $1D$ sigma models on projective spaces $\mathbb{H}{\rm H}^n$ and $\mathbb{H}{\rm P}^n$ as the bosonic core. All Noether charges associated with global worldline symmetries are shown to vanish as a result of equations of motion, which implies that we deal with a severely constrained hamiltonian system. The complete hamiltonian analysis of the bosonic sector is performed.
In supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics with N_c-colors and N_f-flavors of quarks, our effective superpotential provides the alternative description to the Seiberg's N=1 duality at least for N_f>=N_c+2, where spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetries leads to SU(N_c)_{L+R}xSU(N_f-N_c)_LXSU(N_f-N_c)_R as a nonabelian chiral symmetry. The anomaly-matching is ensured by the presence of Nambu-Goldstone superfields associated with this breaking and the instanton contributions are properly equipped in the effective superpotential.
We present more examples of dual N=1 SUSY gauge theories. This set of theories is connected by flows to both Seiberg's and Kutasov's dual theories. This provides a unifying picture of the various dual theories. We investigate the dual theories, their flat directions and mass perturbations.
We explicitly constructed the generators of $SU(n+1)$ group which commute with the supercharges of N=4 supersymmetric $\mathbb{CP}^n$ mechanics in the background U(n) gauge fields. The corresponding Hamiltonian can be represented as a direct sum of two Casimir operators: one Casimir operator on $SU(n+1)$ group contains our bosonic and fermionic coordinates and momenta, while the second one, on the SU(1,n) group, is constructed from isospin degrees of freedom only.
We construct the duality groups for N=2 Supersymmetric QCD with gauge group SU(2n+1) and N_f=4n+2 hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. The groups are generated by two elements $S$ and $T$ that satisfy a relation $(STS^{-1}T)^{2n+1}=1$. Thus, the groups are not subgroups of $SL(2,Z)$. We also construct automorphic functions that map the fundamental region of the group generated by $T$ and $STS$ to the Riemann sphere. These automorphic functions faithfully represent the duality symmetry in the Seiberg-Witten curve.
We consider the N=1 supersymmetric kink on a circle, i.e., on a finite interval with boundary or transition conditions which are locally invisible. For Majorana fermions, the single-particle Dirac Hamiltonian as a differential operator obeys simultaneously the three discrete symmetries of charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal. However, no single locally invisible transition condition can satisfy all three. When calculating sums over zero-point energies by mode number regularization, this gives a new rationale for a previous suggestion that one has to average over different choices of b…
We show how to extend the 't Hooft anomaly matching conditions to discrete symmetries. We check these discrete anomaly matching conditions on several proposed low-energy spectra of certain strongly interacting gauge theories. The excluded examples include the proposed chirally symmetric vacuum of pure N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories, certain non-supersymmetric confining theories and some self-dual N=1 supersymmetric theories based on exceptional groups.
A supersymmetric string model in the D=11 superspace maximally extended by antisymmetric tensor bosonic coordinates, $Σ^{(528|32)}$, is proposed. It possesses 30 $κ$-symmetries and 32 target space supersymmetries. The usual preserved supersymmetry-$κ$-symmetry correspondence suggests that it describes the excitations of a BPS state preserving all but two supersymmetries. The model can also be formulated in any $Σ^{({n(n+1)\over 2}|n)}$ superspace, n=32 corresponding to D=11. It may also be treated as a `higher--spin generalization' of the usual Green--Schwarz superstring. Although the global s…
Two-dimensional sigma-models describing superstrings propagating on manifolds of special holonomy are characterized by symmetries related to covariantly constant forms that these manifolds hold, which are generally non-linear and close in a field dependent sense. The thesis explores various aspects of the special holonomy symmetries.
: We consider two--dimensional supersymmetric Toda theories based on the Lie superalgebras $A(n,n)$, $D(n+1,n)$ and $B(n,n)$ which admit a fermionic set of simple roots and a fermionic untwisted affine extension. In particular, we concentrate on two simple examples, the $B(1,1)$ and $A(1,1)$ theories. Both in the conformal and massive case we address the issue of quantum integrability by constructing the first non trivial conserved currents and proving their conservation to all--loop orders. While the $D(n+1,n)$ and $B(n,n)$ systems are genuine $N=1$ supersymmetric theories, the $A(n,n)$ model…
A recent paper proposes a way of constructing infinite dimensional symmetries of the non-supersymmetric self-dual Yang-Mills action using isometries of the space-time. We review the Lagrangian formulation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills MHV rules and extend the approach taken for the non-supersymmetric case to construct infinite dimensional symmetries of self-dual N = 4 super Yang-Mills.
We develop a formalism to construct supersymmetric backgrounds within the superspace formulation for five-dimensional (5D) conformal supergravity given in arXiv:0802.3953. Our approach is applicable to any off-shell formulation for 5D minimal Poincare and anti-de Sitter supergravity theories realized as the Weyl multiplet coupled with two compensators. For those superspace backgrounds which obey the equations of motion for (gauged) supergravity, we naturally reproduce the supersymmetric solutions constructed a decade ago by Gauntlett et al. For certain supersymmetric backgrounds with eight sup…
In addition to the usual supersymmetric (SUSY) continuous symmetry transformations for the general N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model, we show the existence of a set of novel discrete symmetry transformations for the Lagrangian of the above SUSY quantum mechanical model. Out of all these discrete symmetry transformations, a unique discrete transformation corresponds to the Hodge duality operation of differential geometry and the above SUSY continuous symmetry transformations (and their anticommutator) provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geo…
We note that the accidental symmetries which are present in some examples of duality imply the existence of continuously infinite sets of theories with the same infrared behavior. These sets interpolate between theories of different flavors and colors; the change in color and flavor is compensated by interactions (often non-perturbative) induced by operators in the superpotential. As an example we study the behavior of SU(2) gauge theories with 2\nf doublets; these are dual to SU(\nf-2) gauge theories whose ultraviolet flavor symmetry is SU(\nf)xSU(\nf)xU(1) but whose flavor symmetry is SU(2\n…
We construct the world-volume action for non-BPS D-branes in type II string theories. This action is invariant under all the unbroken supersymmetries in the bulk, but these symmetries are realised as spontaneously broken symmetries in the world-volume theory. Coupling of this action to background supergravity fields is straightforward. We also discuss the fate of the U(1) gauge field on the D-brane world-volume after tachyon condensation.
The supersymmetric version of a topological quantum field theory describing flat connections, the super BF-theory, is studied in the superspace formalism. A set of observables related to topological invariants is derived from the curvature of the superspace. Analogously to the non-supersymmetric versions, the theory exhibits a vector-like supersymmetry. The role of the vector supersymmetry and an additional new symmetry of the action in the construction of observables is explained.
We introduce a computational technique for studying non-supersymmetric deformations of domain wall solutions of interest in AdS/CFT. We focus on the Klebanov-Strassler solution, which is dual to a confining gauge theory. From an analysis of asymptotics we find that there are three deformations that leave the ten-dimensional supergravity solution regular and preserve the global bosonic symmetries of the supersymmetric solution. Also, we show that there are no regular near-extremal deformations preserving the global symmetries, as one might expect from the existence of a gap in the gauge theory.
$\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with algebra $\mathfrak{so}(4N)$ and appropriate choices of global structure can have non-invertible symmetries. We identify the branes holographically dual to the non-invertible symmetries, and derive the fusion rules for the symmetries from the worldvolume dynamics on the branes.
We present the explicit superfield realizations of the hidden $SU(4)$ and $O(5)$ $R$-symmetries in $4D, {\cal N}=4$ and $5D, {\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in the harmonic superspace approach. The $R$-symmetry transformations are constructed and their algebraic structure is studied. It is shown that such transformations are consistent with both manifest and hidden supersymmetry transformations. These symmetries can serve as an alternative tool for constructing the relevant complete low-energy superfield effective actions determined earlier from the hidden supersymmetry consider…
We study two phases of a heterotic standard model, obtained from a Calabi-Yau compactification of the E8xE8 heterotic string, in the context of the associated four-dimensional effective theories. In the first phase we have a standard model gauge group, an MSSM spectrum, four additional U(1) symmetries and singlet fields. In the second phase, obtained from the first by continuing along the singlet directions, three of the additional U(1) symmetries are spontaneously broken and the remaining one is a B-L symmetry. In this second phase, dimension five operators inducing proton decay are consisten…
Global supersymmetries of the S-matrices of N = 2, 4, 8 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in three spacetime dimensions (without matter hypermultiplets) are shown to be SU(1|1), SU(2|2) and SU(2|2) X SU(2|2) respectively. These symmetries are not manifest in the off-shell Lagrangian formulations of these theories. A direct map between these symmetries and their representations in terms of the Yang-Mills degrees of freedom and the corresponding quantities in Chern-Simons-Matter theories with N >= 4 supersymmetry is also obtained. Dimensional reduction of the on-shell observables of the Yang-Mi…
Inspired by the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string we consider a special class of non-supersymmetric field theories: Those that can be obtained from supersymmetric field theories by supersymmetry breaking twists. We argue that such theories, like their supersymmetric counter parts, may still possess some fermionic symmetries as left-overs of the super gauge transformations and have special one-loop non-renormalization properties due to holomorphicity. In addition, we extend the supergraph techniques to these theories to calculate some explicit supersymmetry-breaking…
We study additional non-isospectral symmetries of constrained (reduced) N=2 supersymmetric KP hierarchies of integrable ``soliton''-like evolution equations. These symmetries are shown to form an infinite-dimensional non-Abelian superloop superalgebra. Furthermore we study the general Darboux-Backlund (DB) transformations (including adjoint-DB and binary DB) of N=2 super- KP hierarchies preserving (most of) the additional symmetries. Also we derive the explicit form of the general DB (N=2 ``super- soliton''-like) solutions in the form of generalized Wronskian-like super-determinants.
We study the structure of asymptotic symmetries in N=1+1 supersymmetric extension of three-dimensional gravity with torsion. Using a natural generalization of the bosonic anti-de Sitter asymptotic conditions, we show that the asymptotic Poisson bracket algebra of the canonical generators has the form of two independent super-Virasoro algebras with different central charges.
We describe a general process where a non-Lorentzian rescaling of a supersymmetric field theory leads to a scale-invariant fixed point action without Lorentz invariance but where the supersymmetry is preserved or even enhanced. We apply this procedure to five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric super-Yang-Mills, leading to a field theory with 24 super(conformal) symmetries. We also apply this procedure to the BLG model with 32 super(conformal) symmetries and ABJM models with 24 super(conformal) symmetries.
We present a systematic and 'from the ground up' analysis of the 'minimal coupling' type of gauging of Yang-Mills symmetries in (2,2)-supersymmetric 1+1-dimensional spacetime. Unlike in the familiar 3+1-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric case, we find several distinct types of minimal coupling symmetry gauging, and so several distinct types of gauge (super)fields, some of which entirely novel. Also, we find that certain (quartoid) constrained superfields can couple to no gauge superfield at all, others (haploid ones) can couple only very selectively, while still others (non-minimal, i.e., linear o…
Motivated by recent applications of Carroll symmetries we investigate the geometry of flat and curved (AdS) Carroll space and the symmetries of a particle moving in such a space both in the bosonic as well as in the supersymmetric case. In the bosonic case we find that the Carroll particle possesses an infinite-dimensional symmetry which only in the flat case includes dilatations. The duality between the Bargmann and Carroll algebra, relevant for the flat case, does not extend to the curved case. In the supersymmetric case we study the dynamics of the N=1 AdS Carroll superparticle. Only in the…
This paper is devoted to the systematic study of additional (non- isospectral) symmetries of constrained (reduced) supersymmetric integrable hierarchies of KP type- the so called SKP_(R;M_B,M_F) models. The latter are supersymmetric extensions of ordinary constrained KP hierarchies which contain as special cases basic integrable systems such as (m)KdV, AKNS, Fordy-Kulish, Yajima- Oikawa etc.. As a first main result it is shown that any SKP_(R;M_B,M_F) hierarchy possesses two different mutually (anti-)commuting types of superloop superalgebra additional symmetries corresponding to the positive-…
We review the role of R symmetries in models of supersymmetric unification in four and more dimensions, and in string theory. We show that, if one demands anomaly freedom and fermion masses, only R symmetries can forbid the supersymmetric Higgs mass term mu. We then review the proof that R symmetries are not available in conventional grand unified theories (GUTs) and argue that this prevents natural solutions to the doublet-triplet splitting problem in four dimensions. On the other hand, higher-dimensional GUTs do not suffer from this problem. We briefly comment on an explicit string-derived m…

Classifying the phases of gauge theories is hindered by the lack of local order parameters. In particular, the standard Wilson's and 't Hooft's non-local order parameters are known to be insufficient to explain the existence of the plethora of phases that are found in supersymmetric gauge theories. Motivated by these observations, we reanalyze the concept of gauge symmetry breaking using Galois theory. Unlike the ordinary classical notion of unbroken gauge group, the Galois symmetry makes sense in the full quantum theory and must be a phase invariant. The algebraic structure underlying the spa…
