Beam polarisation is an integral part of the physics case of future Linear Colliders. In this contribution, important examples from Higgs coupling measurements, top and electroweak physics at high energies, the Z pole program as well as from searches for production of new particles will be reviewed. The full exploitation of its advantages requires the polarisation to be known at the permille-level. The a polarimetry concept based on the combination of Compton polarimeters, spin-tracking simulations and a global analysis of collision data which has been developed for the ILC to achieve the required precision will be presented.
The sum rule for the first moment of the polarised (virtual) photon structure function $g_1^γ(x,Q^2;K^2)$ is revisited in the light of proposals for future $e^+ e^-$ colliders. The sum rule exhibits an array of phenomena characteristic of QCD: for real photons ($K^2=0$) electromagnetic gauge invariance constrains the first moment to vanish; the limit for asymptotic photon virtuality ($m_ρ^2 \ll K^2 \ll Q^2$) is governed by the electromagnetic $U_A(1)$ axial anomaly and the approach to asymptopia by the gluonic anomaly; for intermediate values of $K^2$, it reflects the realisation of chiral sym…
The physics potential of an e+e- linear collider can be significantly enhanced if both the electron and positron beams are polarised. Low energy running at the Z-resonance or close to the W-pair threshold is particularly attractive with polarised positrons. This note discusses the experimental aspects and physics opportunities of both low energy running and positron polarisation.
A scheme is proposed for the preparation of a tagged highly polarized antineutron beam, so far not available for experiments. Unpolarized antineutron fluxes are expected to exceed previous intensities by more than an order of magnitude. The method used is based on electropion production on a stored antiproton beam.
Spin-polarised atomic hydrogen is used as a gaseous polarised proton target in high energy and nuclear physics experiments operating with internal beams in storage rings. When such beams are intense and bunched, this type of target can be depolarised by a resonant interaction with the transient magnetic field generated by the beam bunches. This effect has been studied with the HERA positron beam in the HERMES experiment at DESY. Resonances have been observed and a simple analytic model has been used to explain their shape and position. Operating conditions for the experiment have been found wh…

The introduction of a longitudinal polarised positron beam in an $e^+e^-$ linear collider calls for its polarisation monitoring and measurement at low energies near its production location. Here it is shown that a relatively simple Bhabha scattering polarimeter allows, at energies below 5000 MeV, a more than adequate positron beam longitudinal polarisation measurement by using only the final state electrons. It is further shown that out of the three, 10, 250 or 5000 MeV positron beam energy locations, where the polarisationmeasurement in the TESLA linear collider can be performed, the 250 MeV …
The potential for detecting DM at the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is investigated at \mbox{$\sqrt{s}=$ 3 TeV}. The sensitivity of the search is estimated by computing the 95\% confidence level upper limit cross section as a function of the dark matter mass. Left-handed (right-handed) polarised \Pem beams increase (decrease) respectively the Standard Model backgrounds and are essential to characterize the WIMPs properties and control the systematic errors. Using right-handed polarised \Pem beams is decreasing significantly the 95\% confidence level cross section. Using the ratio of the energ…

New ZEUS data are added into the NLO QCD analysis of the ZEUS-JETS PDF fit. The addition of high-$Q^2$ NC and CC $e^-p$ inclusive cross-section data improves the determination of the $u$-valence quark at high $x$. The addition of high-$Q^2$ CC $e^+p$ inclusive cross-section data improves the determination of the $d$-valence quark at high $x$. The addition of lower-$Q^2$ NC $e^+p$ inclusive cross-section data, run at three different proton beam energies, improves the determination of the sea and gluon PDFs at small $x$. The new PDF fit is called the ZEUS09 PDF fit.
For the planned International Linear Collider it is intended to have both -- electron and positron -- beams polarised. This offers a great benefit for many physics studies, but also provides a challenge for the engineering of the machine. A polarised positron source that meets the machine parameters is topic of current design studies and prototype experiments.

We develop theoretical expressions for the luminosity and beam-beam tune shifts in the presence of both a crossing angle and hourglass effects for the present and next generation of symmetric e$^+$-e$^-$ colliders. The theory is applied to the design of the Fermilab site filler Higgs factory and to the FCC-ee collider.
Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs, $χ$) are candidates for Dark Matter. WIMP searches at lepton colliders are complementary to searches at hadron colliders and direct and indirect detection, since they directly probe the coupling to electrons which a priori is independent of the coupling to hadrons. Like at hadron colliders, WIMP pair production can be observed via an additional tag particle, in particular a photon from initial state radiation ($e^+e^-\rightarrowχχγ$). With this technique WIMP masses to nearly half the centre-of-mass energy can be probed. Polarised beams are essentia…
We present the first experimental results on the use of a thick aligned Si crystal acting as a quarter wave plate to induce a degree of circular polarisation in a high energy linearly polarised photon beam. The linearly polarised photon beam is produced from coherent bremsstrahlung radiation by 178 GeV unpolarised electrons incident on an aligned Si crystal, acting as a radiator. The linear polarisation of the photon beam is characterised by measuring the asymmetry in electron-positron pair production in a Ge crystal, for different crystal orientations. The Ge crystal therefore acts as an anal…
After the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012, several possible future circular colliders -- Higgs factories are proposed, such as FCC-ee and CEPC. At these highest-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders, beamstrahlung, namely the synchrotron radiation emitted in the field of the opposing beam, can greatly affect the equilibrium bunch length and energy spread. If the dispersion function at the collision point is not zero, beamstrahlung will also increase the transverse emittances. In this letter, we first show that, for circular Higgs factories, a classical description of the …
COMPASS is a fixed-target experiment on the SPS M2 beamline at CERN. Its LiD target can be polarised both longitudinally and transversally with respect to the longitudinally polarised 160 GeV/c muon beam. Approximately 20% of the beam-time in 2002, 2003 and 2004 was spent in the transverse configuration, allowing the first measurement of both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a deuterium target. First results from the the transverse data of the COMPASS run in 2002 are reported here.
We propose a new beam dump experiment at future colliders with electron ($e^-$) and positron ($e^+$) beams, BDee, which will provide a new possibility to search for hidden particles, like hidden photon. If a particle detector is installed behind the beam dump, it can detect the signal of in-flight decay of the hidden particles produced by the scatterings of $e^\pm$ beams off materials for dumping. We show that, compared to past experiments, BDee (in particular BDee at $e^+e^-$ linear collider) significantly enlarges the parameter region where the signal of the hidden particle can be discovered…
The COMPASS experiment at the CERN SPS investigates the structure and spectrum of hadrons by scattering high energetic hadrons and polarised muons off various fixed targets. During the years 2002-2007, COMPASS focused on nucleon spin physics using 160 GeV/c polarised $μ^+$ beams on polarised deuteron and proton targets, including measurements of the gluon contribution to the nucleon spin using longitudinal target polarisation as well as studies of transverse spin effects in the nucleon on a transversely polarised target. One major goal of the physics programme using hadron beams is the search …
This document contains a proposal of the BEPC-II collider beam energy calibration system (IHEP, Beijing). The system is based on Compton backscattering of carbon dioxide laser radiation, producing a beam of high energy photons. Their energy spectrum is then accurately measured by HPGe detector. The high-energy spectrum edge will allow to determine the average electron or positron beam energy with relative accuracy about 3x10^-5.

Renewed international interest in muon colliders motivates the continued investigation of the impacts of beam-induced background on detector performance. This continues the effort initiated by the Muon Accelerator Program and carried out until 2017. The beam-induced background from muon decays directly impacts detector performance and must be mitigated by optimizing the overall machine design, with particular attention paid to the machine detector interface region. In order to produce beam-induced background events and to study their characteristics in coordination with the collider optimizati…
We propose a three-beam stimulated resonant photon collider with focused laser fields in order to directly produce an axion-like particle (ALP) with the two beams and to stimulate its decay by the remaining one. The expected sensitivity around the eV mass range has been evaluated. The result shows that the sensitivity can reach the ALP-photon coupling down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-14})$ GeV${}^{-1}$ with 1 J class short-pulsed lasers.
We report on the studies of Transverse-Momentum-Dependent distributions (TMDs) at a future fixed-target experiment --AFTER@LHC-- using the $p^+$ or Pb ion LHC beams, which would be the most energetic fixed-target experiment ever performed. AFTER@LHC opens new domains of particle and nuclear physics by complementing collider-mode experiments, in particular those of RHIC and the EIC projects. Both with an extracted beam by a bent crystal or with an internal gas target, the luminosity achieved by AFTER@LHC surpasses that of RHIC by up to 3 orders of magnitude. With an unpolarised target, it allow…
A novel method of electron beam cooling is considered which can be used for linear colliders. The electron beam is cooled during collision with focused powerful laser pulse. With reasonable laser parameters (laser flash energy about 10 J) one can decrease transverse beam emittances by a factor about 10 per one stage. The ultimate transverse emittances are much below those achievable by other methods. Beam depolarization during cooling is about 5--15 % for one stage. This method is especially useful for photon colliders and opens new possibilities for e+e- colliders.
A future linear collider such as TESLA may be able to run on the Z0 resonance with very high luminosity and polarised electron and positron beams. The possibilities of measuring electroweak quantities with high precision are investigated. Huge improvements with respect to the present precision can be expected, especially for the asymmetries A_LR and A_b where beam polarisation can be exploited. The very large sample of Z to bbbar events also allows studies of various CP-violating b decays. The precision achievable on the CKM unitarity triangle angles is comparable to experiments at b factories…
In the polarised Drell-Yan experiment at the COMPASS facility in CERN pion beam with momentum of 190 GeV/c and intensity about $10^8$ pions/s interacted with transversely polarised NH$_3$ target. Muon pairs produced in Drel-Yan process were detected. The measurement was done in 2015 as the 1st ever polarised Drell-Yan fixed target experiment. The hydrogen nuclei in the solid-state NH$_3$ were polarised by dynamic nuclear polarisation in 2.5 T field of large-acceptance superconducting magnet. Large helium dilution cryostat was used to cool the target down below 100 mK. Polarisation of hydrogen …
We review a number of ideas put forward in favour of the use of a polarised target along with the proposed idea of a fixed-target experiment using the LHC beams -- AFTER@LHC. A number of recent studies have shown that single transverse-spin asymmetries (STSAs) are large enough to be precisely measured in the region accessible with AFTER@LHC, in particular as regards the Drell-Yan process as well as single-pion, isolated-photon and jet production. AFTER@LHC with a polarised target would also be the ideal experimental set-up to measure the gluon Sivers effect via a number of original quarkonium …
The idea of plasma suppression of beam-beam effects at muon colliders is discussed. It is shown that one should take into account collisions in the plasma that were ignored before. Rough estimates show that this effect leads to a fast ``recovery'' of the beam magnetic field. For beam parameters characteristic for muon colliders the suppression of the magnetic component of the beam field (1/2 of the total force) is almost absent. It is also shown that the presence of the dense plasma (Li jet) at the interaction point leads to enormous hadronic background (due to photo-nuclear reactions) in the …
I describe parameterizations of realistic $e^\pm$- and $γ$-beam spectra at future linear $e^+e^-$-colliders. Emphasis is put on simplicity and reproducibility of the parameterizations, supporting reproducible physics simulations. The parameterizations are implemented in a library of distribution functions and event generators.
A method of electron beam cooling is considered which can be used for linear colliders. The electron beam is cooled during collision with focused powerful laser pulse. The ultimate transverse emittances are much below those achievable by other methods. This method is especially useful for high energy gamma-gamma colliders. In this paper we review and analyse limitations in this method, also discuss a new method of obtaining very high laser powers required for the laser cooling, radiation conditions and finaly present a possible scheme for the laser cooling of electron beams.
The beam energy measurement system for the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider is described. The method of Compton backscattering of $CO$ laser photons on the electron beam is used. The relative systematic uncertainty of the beam energy determination is estimated as 6\cdot10^{-5}. It was obtained through comparison of the results of the beam energy measurements using the Compton backscattering and resonance depolarization methods.
The SLAC Linear Collider has been colliding a polarized electron beam with an unpolarized positron beam at the Z^0 resonance for the SLD experiment since 1992. An electron beam polarization of close to 80% has been achieved for the experiment at luminosities up to 8x10^29 cm^-2 s^-1. This is the world's first and only linear collider, and is a successful prototype for the next generation of high energy electron linear colliders. This paper discusses polarized beam operation for the SLC, and includes aspects of the polarized source, spin transport and polarimetry. Presented at the 12th Internat…
It is shown that muon decays in straight sections of muon collider rings will naturally produce highly collimated neutrino beams that can be several orders of magnitude stronger than the beams at existing accelerators. We discuss possible experimental setups and give a very brief overview of the physics potential from such beamlines. Formulae are given for the neutrino event rates at both short and long baseline neutrino experiments in these beams.

At photon colliders gamma-gamma, gamma-electron high energy photons are produced by Compton scattering of laser light off the high energy electrons (or positrons) at a linear collider. At first sight, photon colliders based on e-e- or e+e- primary beams have similar properties and therefore for convenience one can use e+e- beams both for e+e- and gamma-gamma modes of operation. Below we compare these options and show that e-e- beams are much better (mandatory) because in the e+e- case low energy background gamma-gamma to hadrons is much higher and e+e- annihilation reactions present a very ser…
We outline in detail a staging scenario for realizing the Neutrino Factory and the Muon Collider. As a first stage we envisage building an intense proton source that can be used to perform high intensity conventional neutrino beam experiments ("Superbeams"). While this is in progress, we perform R&D in collecting, cooling and accelerating muons which leads to the next two stages of "Cold Muon Beams" and the Neutrino Factory. Further progress in Muon Cooling especially in the area of emittance exchange will lead us to the Muon Collider. A staged scenario such as this opens up new physics avenue…
Neutral-current (NC) and charged-current (CC) deep inelastic scattering (DIS) interactions have been studied in electron-proton and positron-proton collisions with longitudinally polarised lepton beams using the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA. Measurements of the polarised inclusive cross-sections are presented and compared to the Standard Model (SM) expectations. The extraction of several electroweak parameters using a combined EW-QCD fit of unpolarised data is also discussed.
We analyse the performance of a gas time projection chamber (TPC) as a high-performance gamma-ray telescope and polarimeter in the e$^+$e$^-$ pair creation regime. We use data collected at a gamma-ray beam of known polarisation. The TPC provides two orthogonal projections $(x,z)$ and $(y,z)$ of the tracks induced by each conversion in the gas volume. We use a simple vertex finder in which vertices and pseudo-tracks exiting from them are identified. We study the various contributions to the single-photon angular resolution using Monte Carlo simulations and compare them with the experimental dat…
