The mechanical properties of Mg-4wt.% Zn alloy single crystals along the [0001] orientation were measured through micropillar compression at 23C and 100C. Basal slip was dominant in the solution treated alloy, while pyramidal slip occurred in the precipitation hardened alloy. Pyramidal dislocations pass the precipitates by forming Orowan loops, leading to homogeneous deformation and to a strong hardening. The predictions of the yield stress based on the Orowan model were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The presence of rod-shape precipitates perpendicular to the basal plane leads to a strong reduction in the plastic anisotropy of Mg.
A generalized line tension model has been developed to estimate the critical resolved shear stress in precipitation hardened alloys. The model is based in previous line tension models for regular arrays of either impenetrable or shearable spherical precipitates that were expanded to take into account the effect of the elastic mismatch between the matrix and the precipitates. The model parameters are calibrated from dislocation dynamics simulations that covered a wide range of precipitate diameters and spacing as well as of the mismatch in elastic constants. This model is extended to deal with …
The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interaction as well as the critical resolved shear stress were determined as a function of temperature in a Mg-4 wt. % Zn alloy by means of micropillar compression tests. It was found that the mechanical properties were independent of the micropillar size when the cross-section was $>$ 3 x 3 $μ$m$^2$. Transmission electron microscopy showed that deformation involved a mixture of dislocation bowing around the precipitates and precipitate shearing. The initial yield strength was compatible with the predictions of the Orowan model for dislocation bowing a…
A high-throughput methodology is proposed, based on the combination of diffusion couples and advanced nanomechanical testing methods, to directly measure alloying effects on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of individual deformation modes in Mg alloys. The methodology is tested in Mg-Zn alloys by assessing the alloying effects, up to Zn contents of 2 at.%, on basal slip, extension twining and pyramidal slip in two metallurgical condition: as-quenched, for which the Zn solute atoms remain homogenously dispersed in solid solution; and peak-aged, for which the Zn atoms form rod-shape $Mg…
Precipitation hardening, which relies on a high density of intermetallic precipitates, is a commonly utilized technique for strengthening structural alloys. Structural alloys are commonly strengthened through a high density of small size intermetallic precipitates. At high temperatures, however, the precipitates coarsen to reduce the excess energy of the interface, resulting in a significant reduction in the strengthening provided by the precipitates. In certain ternary alloys, the secondary solute segregates to the interface and results in the formation of a high density of nanosize precipita…
Precipitation strengthening is one of the most effective methods to design alloys with the desired combination of strength and ductility. The main mechanism of strengthening is generally known to be the interaction between dislocations and precipitates. When a dislocation encounters a precipitate, it bends and therefore the level of applied stress to the precipitate increases. Once the applied stress reaches the precipitate resistance, it passes the precipitate. Dislocations can bypass precipitates either by forming the Orowan loops or by cutting them. In this research, the focus is set on a s…
We report on a quantitative investigation into the effect of size and distribution of rod-shaped β' precipitates on strength and ductility of a Mg-Zn alloy. Despite precipitation strengthening being crucial for the practical application of magnesium alloys this study represents the first systematic examination of the effect of controlled deformation on the precipitate size distribution and the resulting strength and ductility of a magnesium alloy. Pre-ageing deformation was used to obtain various distributions of rod-shaped β' precipitates through heterogeneous nucleation. Alloys were extruded…
The critical resolved shear stress of an Al 4 wt. \% Cu alloy containing a homogeneous distribution of $θ''$ precipitates was determined by means of dislocation dynamics simulations. The size distribution, shape, orientation and volume fraction of the precipitates in the alloy were obtained from transmission electron microscopy observations while the parameters controlling the dislocation/precipitate interactions (elastic mismatch, transformation strains, dislocation mobility and cross-slip probability, etc.) were calculated from atomistic simulations. The precipitates were assumed to be eithe…
The mechanisms of dislocation/precipitate interaction were studied by means of discrete dislocation dynamics within a multiscale approach. Simulations were carried out using the discrete continuous method in combination with a fast Fourier transform solver to compute the mechanical fields. The original simulation strategy was modified to include straight dislocation segments by means of the field dislocation mechanics method and was applied to simulate the interaction of an edge dislocation with a $θ'$ precipitate in an Al-Cu alloy. It was found that the elastic mismatch has a negligible influ…
Orowan strengthening is a primary way of strengthening metallic materials. The effect of temperature on the Orowan strengthening mechanism is still debatable in the present day.In this study, the effect of temperature on the Orowan strengthening mechanism is systematically investigated,a thermal activation Orowan strengthening mechanism is developed, and the corresponding Orowan stress is deduced. The results indicate that the obstacle scales substantially affect the thermal activation-based dislocation that bypasses the precipitates processes. In small obstacle scales, the thermal activation contri…
A scale bridging strategy based in molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations in combination with transition state theory has been developed to determine the flow stress of Al-Cu alloy containing Guinier-Preston zones. The athermal contribution to the flow stress was determined from the Taylor model, while the thermal contribution was obtained from the obstacle strength and the free energy barrier. These two magnitudes were obtained by means of molecular statics and molecular dynamics simulations of the interaction of edge dislocations with Guinier-Preston zones in two different orie…
The influence of different types of precipitates (either Guinier-Preston zones, $θ''$ or $θ'$) on the critical resolved shear stress and strain hardening was determined by means of micropillar compression tests in an Al - 4 wt. \% Cu alloy. The size, shape and volume fraction of the precipitates were measured in each case. It was found that size effects were negligible for micropillars with diameter $\ge$ 5 $μ$m. Micropillars with Guinier-Preston zones showed strain localization due to precipitate shearing. The best mechanical properties were obtained with either a fine dispersion of the $θ''$…
The combined strengthening effects of grain refinement and high precipitated volume fraction (~6at.%) on the mechanical properties of FeSiTi alloy subjected to SPD processing prior to aging treatment were investigated by atom probe tomography and scanning transmission electron microscopy. It was shown that the refinement of the microstructure affects the precipitation kinetics and the spatial distribution of the secondary hardening intermetallic phase, which was observed to nucleate heterogeneously on dislocations and sub-grain boundaries. It was revealed that alloys successively subjected to …
Atomistic simulations were carried out to analyze the interaction between $< a>$ basal dislocations and precipitates in Mg-Al alloys and the associated strengthening mechanisms.
Effective post-heat treatment is critical to achieve desired microstructure for high-performance in additively manufactured (AM) components. In this work, the influence of homogenization on microstructure-property relationship in 17-4PH steels has been investigated. Precipitation of NbC, oxides, and ε-Cu were observed in the as-built 17-4PH steels. To design an optimum post-heat treatment, homogenization was performed at 1050oC for different times followed by aging at 482oC for 1 hour. It was identified that homogenization for 1 hour followed by aging leads to the best combination of strength …
The effects of various heat treatments on the microstructure and hardness of new Ni56Ti41Hf3 and Ni56Ti36Hf8 (atomic %) alloys were studied to evaluate the suitability of these materials for tribological applications. A solid-solution strengthening effect due to Hf atoms was observed for the solution annealed (SA) Ni56Ti36Hf8 alloy (716 HV), resulting in a comparable hardness to the Ni56Ti41Hf3 alloy containing 54 vol.% of Ni4Ti3 precipitates (707 HV). In the Ni56Ti41Hf3 alloy, the maximum hardness (752 HV), achieved after aging at 300C for 12 h, was attributed to dense, semi-coherent precipit…
The effect of pre-ageing deformation on the size and distribution of beta-prime precipitates and subsequently on the resulting strength and ductility have been measured in a Mg-3.0at.%Zn-0.5at.%Y alloy. The alloy was extruded and then subjected to a T8 heat treatment comprised of a solution-treatment, cold-work and artificial ageing. Extrusion was used to introduce texture, ensuring that deformation occurred via slip rather than twinning. Samples were subjected to controlled uniaxial deformation and then isothermally aged to peak hardness. Precipitate length, diameter and number density were m…
This work demonstrates the development of a strong and ductile medium entropy alloy by employing conventional alloying and thermomechanical processing to induce partial recrystallization (PR) and precipitation strengthening in the microstructure. The combined usage of electron microscopy and atom probe tomography reveals the sequence of microstructural evolution during the process. First, the cold working of homogenized alloy resulted in a highly deformed microstructure. On annealing at 700°C, B2 ordered precipitates heterogeneously nucleate on the highly misoriented sites. These B2 promotes p…
Linear complexions are defect phases that form in the presence of dislocations and thus are promising for the direct control of plasticity. In this study, atomistic simulations are used to model the effect of linear complexions on dislocation-based mechanisms for plasticity, demonstrating unique behaviors that differ from classical dislocation glide mechanisms. Linear complexions impart higher resistance to the initiation and continuation of dislocation motion when compared to solid solution strengthening in all of the face-centered cubic alloys investigated here, with the exact strengthening …
Ni-based superalloys have been the subject of enormous usage in scenarios where the loading is heavy and often occurs at elevated temperatures. The strengthening mechanisms that come into play within the metallic lattice have been studied extensively as micromechanical MMC models. These continuum formulations suffer from several limitations. The underlying mechanisms at the atomistic scale have not yet been well understood. The report attempts to model the interaction of moving dislocation with cuboidal precipitates and explain the strengthening effect. The effect of particle size and inter-pa…
The effect of Si on Fe-rich intermetallics formation and mechanical properties of heat-treated squeeze cast Al-5.0Cu-0.6Mn-0.7Fe alloy was investigated. Our results show that increasing Si content promotes the formation of Al15(FeMn)3(SiCu)2 ($α$-Fe), and varying the morphology of T (Al20Cu3Mn2) where the size decreases and the amount increases. The major reason is that Si promotes heterogeneous nucleation of the intermetallics leading to finer precipitates. Si addition significantly enhances ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the alloys. The strengthening effect is mainly owing t…

Basal slip acts as a secondary deformation mode in hexagonal close-packed titanium and becomes one of the primary mechanisms in titanium alloyed with simple metals. As these solute elements also lead to a pronounced reduction of the energy of the basal stacking fault, one can hypothesize that they promote basal dissociation of dislocations which can then easily glide in the basal planes. Here, we verify the validity of this hypothesis using ab initio calculations to model the interaction of a screw dislocation with indium (In) and tin (Sn). These calculations confirm that these simple metals a…
