We present a comparative analysis of observational low-redshift background constraints on three candidate models for explaining the low-redshift acceleration of the universe. The generalized coupling model by Feng and Carloni and the scale invariant model by Maeder (both of which can be interpreted as bimetric theories) are compared to the traditional parametrization of Chevallier, Polarski and Linder. In principle the generalized coupling model, which in vacuum is equivalent to General Relativity, contains two types of vacuum energy: the usual cosmological constant plus a second contribution due to the matter fields. We show that the former is necessary for the model to agree with low-redshift observations, while there is no statistically significant evidence for the presence of the second. On the other hand the scale invariant model effectively has a time-dependent cosmological constant. In this case we show that a matter density $Ω_m\sim0.3$ is a relatively poor fit to the data, and the best-fit model would require a fluid with a much smaller density and a significantly positive equation of state parameter.
Based on the assumption that the dark energy possessing bulk viscosity is homogenously and isotropically permeated in the universe, we propose three new viscous dark energy (VDE) models to characterize the accelerating universe. By constraining these three models with the latest cosmological observations, we find that they just deviate very slightly from the standard cosmological model and can alleviate effectively the current $H_0$ tension between the local observation by the Hubble Space Telescope and the global measurement by the Planck Satellite. Interestingly, we conclude that a spatially…
We use six different cosmological models to study the recently-released compilation of X-ray and UV flux measurements of 2038 quasars (QSOs) which span the redshift range $0.009 \leq z \leq 7.5413$. We find, for the full QSO data set, that the parameters of the X-ray and UV luminosities $L_X-L_{UV}$ relation used to standardized these QSOs depend on the cosmological model used to determine these parameters, i.e, it appears that the full QSO data set include QSOs that are not standardized and so cannot be used for the purpose of constraining cosmological parameters. Subsets of the QSO data, res…
A cosmological observable measured in a range of redshifts can be used as a probe of a set of cosmological parameters. Given the cosmological observable and the cosmological parameter, there is an optimum range of redshifts where the observable can constrain the parameter in the most effective manner. For other redshift ranges the observable values may be degenerate with respect to the cosmological parameter values and thus inefficient in constraining the given parameter. These are blind redshift ranges. We determine the optimum and the blind redshift ranges of cosmological observables with re…
We present here up-to-date neutrino mass limits exploiting the most recent cosmological data sets. By making use of the Cosmic Microwave Background temperature fluctuation and polarization measurements, Supernovae Ia luminosity distances, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation observations and determinations of the growth rate parameter, we are able to set the most constraining bound to date, $\sum m_ν<0.09$ eV at $95\%$~CL. This very tight limit is obtained without the assumption of any prior on the value of the Hubble constant and highly compromises the viability of the inverted mass ordering as the un…
In this work, we investigate the impacts of the future gravitational-wave (GW) standard siren observation by the Einstein Telescope (ET) on constraining the interacting dark energy (IDE) models. We simulate 1000 GW events in the redshift range of $0\lesssim z \lesssim 5$ based on the 10-year observation of the ET. We combine the simulated GW data with the current mainstream cosmological electromagnetic observations including the cosmic microwave background anisotropies, the baryon acoustic oscillations, and the type Ia supernovae to constrain the IDE models. We consider typical IDE models in t…
We proposed a model-independent method to constrain the cosmological parameters using the Distance Sum Rule of the FLRW metric by combining the time delay distances and the comoving distances through a multi-messenger approach. The time delay distances are measured from lensed gravitational wave~(GW) signals together with their corresponding electromagnetic wave~(EM) counterpart, while the comoving distances are obtained from a parametrized fitting approach with independent supernova observations. With a series of simulations based on Einstein Telescope, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and The…
Recently, the observed equation of state for dark energy appears to favor values below $-1$. The tendency implies that the nature of dark energy may be quite different from that of the cosmological constant. In view of the adjustment on the equation of state keeps decreasing, the introduction of the phantom energy seems inevitable. By employing observational constraints from supernovae and from the acoustic scale in which the accuracy of the data has become extraordinary, we apply a phenomenological scenario to be acquainted with the evolution of our universe. The demonstration on the constrai…
In this paper, we use The Quijote simulations in order to extract the cosmological parameters through Bayesian Neural Networks. This kind of model has a remarkable ability to estimate the associated uncertainty, which is one of the ultimate goals in the precision cosmology era. We demonstrate the advantages of BNNs for extracting more complex output distributions and non-Gaussianities information from the simulations.
We use 78 reverberation-measured Mg II time-lag quasars (QSOs) in the redshift range $0.0033 \leq z \leq 1.89$ to constrain cosmological parameters in six different cosmological models. The basis of our method is the use of the radius-luminosity or $R-L$ relation to standardize these 78 Mg II QSOs. In each cosmological model we simultaneously determine $R-L$ relation and cosmological model parameters, thus avoiding the circularity problem. We find that the $R-L$ relation parameter values are independent of the cosmological model used in the analysis thus establishing that current Mg II QSOs ar…
Our current measurements of the Standard Model parameters imply that the Higgs field resides in a metastable electroweak vacuum, where the vacuum can decay to a lower ground state, with cataclysmic repercussions for our Universe. According to our observations, no such event has happened in the observable universe, in spite of the various energetic processes that could have triggered it. This work serves as an overview of a method that uses the metastability of the false vacuum during cosmological inflation to provide constraints on the Higgs curvature coupling $ξ$. Considering also the effects…
We explore the complementarity between terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments and astrophysical/cosmological measurements in probing the existence of sterile neutrinos. We find that upcoming accelerator neutrino experiments will not improve on constraints by the time they are operational, but that reactor experiments can already probe parameter space beyond the reach of Planck. We emphasize the tension between cosmological experiments and reactor antineutrino experiments and enumerate several possibilities for resolving this tension.

In a recent work, it has been proposed that the recent cosmic passage to a cosmic acceleration era is the result of the existence of small anti-gravity sources in each galaxy and clusters of galaxies. In particular, a swiss-cheese cosmology model which relativistically integrates the contribution of all these anti-gravity sources on galactic scale has been constructed assuming the presence of an infrared fixed point for a scale dependent cosmological constant. The derived cosmological expansion provides explanation for both the fine tuning and the coincidence problem. The present work relaxes …
We study the holographic dark energy (HDE) model by using the future gravitational wave (GW) standard siren data observed from the Einstein Telescope (ET) in this work. We simulate 1000 GW standard siren data based on a 10-year observation of the ET to make this analysis. We find that all the cosmological parameters in the HDE model can be tremendously improved by including the GW standard siren data in the cosmological fit. The GW data combined with the current cosmic microwave background anisotropies, baryon acoustic oscillations, and type Ia supernovae data will measure the cosmological par…
We determine the conditions for which the constraints from lunar laser ranging on the time evolution of the local gravitational constant can be extrapolated to impose constraints on the time evolution of the cosmological gravitational constant in scalar-tensor theories of modified gravity. We allow for the possibility that the scalar-tensor theories are non-linear and contain a screening mechanism. This results in strong constraints on the running of the cosmological Planck mass described by the Horndeski function $|α_M|\lesssim 0.002$. We find that our assumptions are valid for most Vainshtei…
We study the gauge invariant cosmological perturbations up to second order. We show that there are infinite families of gauge invariant variables at both of the first and second orders. The conversion formulae among different families are shown to be described by a finite number of bases that are gauge invariant. For the second order cosmological perturbations induced by the first order scalar perturbations, we explicitly represent the equations of motion of them in terms of the gauge invariant Newtonian, synchronous and hybrid variables, respectively.
A cosmological first-order phase transition is expected to produce a stochastic gravitational wave background. If the phase transition temperature is on the MeV scale, the power spectrum of the induced stochastic gravitational waves peaks around nanohertz frequencies, and can thus be probed with high-precision pulsar timing observations. We search for such a stochastic gravitational wave background with the latest data set of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array. We find no evidence for a Hellings-Downs spatial correlation as expected for a stochastic gravitational wave background. Therefore, we pre…
Constraining neutrino mass and extra relativistic degrees of freedom in dynamical dark energy models using Planck 2015 data in combination with low-redshift cosmological probes: basic extensions to $Λ$CDM cosmology
The propagation of gravitational waves (GWs) at cosmological distances offers a new way to test the gravitational interaction at the largest scales. Many modified theories of gravity, usually introduced to explain the observed acceleration of the universe, can be probed in an alternative and complementary manner with respect to standard electromagnetic (EM) observations. In this paper we consider a homogeneous and isotropic cosmology with extra spatial dimensions at large scales, which represents a simple phenomenological prototype for extra-dimensional modified gravity cosmological models. By…
The functional renormalisation group is employed to study the non-linear regime of late-time cosmic structure formation. This framework naturally allows for non-perturbative approximation schemes, usually guided by underlying symmetries or a truncation of the theory space. An extended symmetry that is related to Galilean invariance is studied and corresponding Ward identities are derived. These are used to obtain (formally) closed renormalisation group flow equations for two-point correlation functions in the limit of large wave numbers (small scales). The flow equations are analytically solve…
We study a Lagrangian with a cubic Galileon term and a standard scalar-field kinetic contribution with two exponential potentials. In this model the Galileon field generates scaling solutions in which the density of the scalar field $ϕ$ scales in the same manner as the matter density at early-time. These solutions are of high interest because the scalar field can then be compatible with the energy scale of particle physics and can alleviate the coincidence problem. The phenomenology of linear perturbations is thoroughly discussed, including all the relevant effects on the observables. Addition…
Observational searches for large-scale vorticity modes in the late time Universe are underexplored. Within the standard $Λ$CDM model, this is well motivated given the observed properties of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). However, this means that searches for cosmic vorticity modes can serve as a powerful consistency test of our cosmological model. We show that through combining CMB measurements of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich and the moving lens effects with galaxy survey data we can constrain vorticity fields independently from the large scale cosmic velocity field. This approach ca…
We study a quintessence model for which the scalar field is disformally coupled to dark matter. The background mimics the LCDM cosmological evolution and the quintessence potential is not specified. A disformal effect due to the quintessential mass is seen in the growth rate of the cosmological structure on large scales. The disformal parameter renders no appreciable effect on the evolution of the total matter perturbation. An analysis of the conformal parameter and quintessential mass is investigated using the Redshift Space Distortion data to find the best-fit values that might explain the w…
Gravitational lensing has long been used to measure or constrain cosmology models. Although the lensing effect of gravitational waves has not been observed by LIGO/Virgo, it is expected that there can be a few to a few hundreds lensed events to be detected by the future Japanese space-borne interferometers DECIGO and B-DECIGO, if they are running for 4 years. Given the predicted lensed gravitational wave events, one can estimate the constraints on the cosmological parameters via the lensing statistics and the time delay methods. With the lensing statistics method, the knowledge of the lens red…
We investigate the idea that current cosmic acceleration could be the consequence of gravitational leakage into extra dimensions on cosmological scales rather than the result of a non-zero cosmological constant, and consider the ability of future gravitational-wave siren observations to probe this phenomenon and constrain the parameters of phenomenological models of this gravitational leakage. In theories that include additional non-compact spacetime dimensions, the gravitational leakage intro extra dimensions leads to a reduction in the amplitude of observed gravitational waves and thereby a …
We study the density structures of dark matter subhalos for both cold dark matter and self-interacting dark matter models using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We quantify subhalo's central density at 150 pc from the center of each subhalo at the classical dwarf spheroidal and ultrafaint dwarf scales found in Milky-Way sized halos. By comparing them with observations, we find that the self-interacting scattering cross-section of $σ/m<3\ \rm{cm^{2}g^{-1}}$ is favored. Due to the combination of hosts' tide and self-interactions, the central density of subhalos with small peric…
Strongly gravitational lensing systems (SGL) encodes cosmology information in source/lens distance ratios $\mathcal{D}_{\rm obs}=\mathcal{D}_{\rm ls}/\mathcal{D}_{\rm s}$, which can be used to precisely constrain cosmological parameters. In this paper, based on future measurements of 390 strong lensing systems from the forthcoming LSST survey, we have successfully reconstructed the distance ratio $\mathcal{D}_{\rm obs}$ (with the source redshift $z_s\sim 4.0$), directly from the data without assuming any parametric form. A recently developed method based on model-independent reconstruction app…
We test the possible dipole anisotropy of a Finslerian cosmological model and other three dipole-modulated cosmological models, i.e., the dipole-modulated $\rmΛ$CDM, $w$CDM and Chevallier--Polarski--Linder (CPL) model by using the recently released Pantheon sample of SNe Ia. The Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is used to explore the whole parameter space. We find that the dipole anisotropy is very weak in all cosmological models used. Although the dipole amplitudes of four cosmological models are consistent with zero within $1σ$ uncertainty, the dipole directions are close to the axial …
In this work we present updated forecasts on parameterised modifications of gravity that can capture deviations of the behaviour of cosmological density perturbations beyond $Λ$CDM. For these forecasts we adopt the SKA Observatory (SKAO) as a benchmark for future cosmological surveys at radio frequencies, combining a continuum survey for weak lensing and angular galaxy clustering with an HI galaxy survey for spectroscopic galaxy clustering that can detect baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift space distortions. Moreover, we also add 21cm HI intensity mapping, which provides invaluable info…
Space-borne gravitational wave detectors like TianQin are expected to detect GW signals emitted by the mergers of massive black hole binaries. Luminosity distance information can be obtained from GW observations, and one can perform cosmological inference if redshift information can also be extracted, which would be straightforward if an electromagnetic counterpart exists. In this paper, we concentrate on the conservative scenario where the EM counterparts are not available, and comprehensively study if cosmological parameters can be inferred through a statistical approach, utilizing the non-u…
