In this work, we investigate the impacts of the future gravitational-wave (GW) standard siren observation by the Einstein Telescope (ET) on constraining the interacting dark energy (IDE) models. We simulate 1000 GW events in the redshift range of $0\lesssim z \lesssim 5$ based on the 10-year observation of the ET. We combine the simulated GW data with the current mainstream cosmological electromagnetic observations including the cosmic microwave background anisotropies, the baryon acoustic oscillations, and the type Ia supernovae to constrain the IDE models. We consider typical IDE models in the context of a perturbed universe. To avoid the large-scale instability problem for IDE models, we apply the extended parameterized post-Friedmann approach to calculate the cosmological perturbations. We find that the addition of the GW standard siren data could significantly improve the constraint accuracies for most of the cosmological parameters (e.g., $H_{0}$, $w$, and $Ω_{\rm m}$). For the coupling parameter $β$, the constraint errors could also be slightly improved when adding the GW data in the cosmological fit.
We forecast constraints on cosmological parameters in the interacting dark energy models using the mock data generated for neutral hydrogen intensity mapping (IM) experiments. In this work, we only consider the interacting dark energy models with energy transfer rate $Q=βHρ_{\rm c}$, and take BINGO, FAST, SKA1-MID, and Tianlai as typical examples of the 21 cm IM experiments. We find that the Tianlai cylinder array will play an important role in constraining the interacting dark energy model. Assuming perfect foreground removal and calibration, and using the Tianlai-alone data, we obtain $σ(H_0…
We examine the effectiveness of the weak gravity conjecture in constraining the dark energy by comparing with observations. For general dark energy models with plausible phenomenological interactions between dark sectors, we find that although the weak gravity conjecture can constrain the dark energy, the constraint is looser than that from the observations.
We perform a forecast analysis of the capability of the eLISA space-based interferometer to constrain models of early and interacting dark energy using gravitational wave standard sirens. We employ simulated catalogues of standard sirens given by merging massive black hole binaries visible by eLISA, with an electromagnetic counterpart detectable by future telescopes. We consider three-arms mission designs with arm length of 1, 2 and 5 million km, 5 years of mission duration and the best-level low frequency noise as recently tested by the LISA Pathfinder. Standard sirens with eLISA give access …
The local measurement of $H_0$ is in tension with the prediction of $Λ$CDM model based on the Planck data. This tension may imply that dark energy is strengthened in the late-time Universe. We employ the latest cosmological observations on CMB, BAO, LSS, SNe, $H(z)$ and $H_0$ to constrain several interacting dark energy models. Our results show no significant indications for the interaction between dark energy and dark matter. The $H_0$ tension can be moderately alleviated, but not totally released.
We study the density structures of dark matter subhalos for both cold dark matter and self-interacting dark matter models using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We quantify subhalo's central density at 150 pc from the center of each subhalo at the classical dwarf spheroidal and ultrafaint dwarf scales found in Milky-Way sized halos. By comparing them with observations, we find that the self-interacting scattering cross-section of $σ/m<3\ \rm{cm^{2}g^{-1}}$ is favored. Due to the combination of hosts' tide and self-interactions, the central density of subhalos with small peric…
Large, non-standard neutrino self-interactions have been shown to resolve the $\sim 4σ$ tension in Hubble constant measurements and a milder tension in the amplitude of matter fluctuations. We demonstrate that interactions of the necessary size imply the existence of a force-carrier with a large neutrino coupling ($> 10^{-4}$) and mass in the keV -- 100 MeV range. This mediator is subject to stringent cosmological and laboratory bounds, and we find that nearly all realizations of such a particle are excluded by existing data unless it carries spin 0 and couples almost exclusively to $τ$-flavor…

We study models in which neutrino masses are generated dynamically at cosmologically late times. Our study is purely phenomenological and parameterized in terms of three effective parameters characterizing the redshift of mass generation, the width of the transition region, and the present day neutrino mass. We also study the possibility that neutrinos become strongly self-interacting at the time where the mass is generated. We find that in a number of cases, models with large present day neutrino masses are allowed by current CMB, BAO and supernova data. The increase in the allowed mass range…
In this paper, we perform a forecast analysis to test the capacity of future baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments to constrain phenomenological interacting dark energy models using the Fisher matrix formalism. We consider a Euclid-like experiment, in which BAO measurements is one of the main goals, to constrain the cosmological parameters of alternative cosmological models. Moreover, additional experimental probes can more efficiently provide information on the parameters forecast, justifying also the inclusion in the analysis of a future ground-b…
Self-Interacting Dark Matter is an attractive alternative to the Cold Dark Matter paradigm only if it is able to substantially reduce the central densities of dwarf-size haloes while keeping the densities and shapes of cluster-size haloes within current constraints. Given the seemingly stringent nature of the latter, it was thought for nearly a decade that SIDM would be viable only if the cross section for self-scattering was strongly velocity-dependent. However, it has recently been suggested that a constant cross section per unit mass of sigma_T/m~0.1cm^2/g is sufficient to accomplish the de…
We discuss present and future cosmological constraints on variations of the fine structure constant $α$ induced by an early dark energy component having the simplest allowed (linear) coupling to electromagnetism. We find that current cosmological data show no variation of the fine structure constant at recombination respect to the present-day value, with $α$ / $α_0$ = 0.975 \pm 0.020 at 95 % c.l., constraining the energy density in early dark energy to $Ω_e$ < 0.060 at 95 % c.l.. Moreover, we consider constraints on the parameter quantifying the strength of the coupling by the scalar field. We…
The chemical composition of the highest end of the ultra-high-energy cosmic ray spectrum is very hard to measure experimentally, and to this day it remains mostly unknown. Since the trajectories of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are deflected in the magnetic field of the Galaxy by an angle that depends on their atomic number $Z$, it could be possible to indirectly measure $Z$ by quantifying the amount of such magnetic deflections. In this paper we show that, using the angular harmonic cross-correlation between ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and galaxies, we could effectively distinguish differen…
The recent measurement of the global 21-cm absorption signal reported by the Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES) Collaboration is in tension with the prediction of the $Λ$CDM model at a $3.8\,σ$ significance level. In this work, we report that this tension can be released by introducing an interaction between dark matter and vacuum energy. We perform a model parameter estimation using a combined dataset including EDGES and other recent cosmological observations, and find that the EDGES measurement can marginally improve the constraint on parameters that quan…
We study a model of interacting dark matter and dark energy, in which the two components are coupled. We calculate the predictions for the 21-cm intensity mapping power spectra, and forecast the detectability with future single-dish intensity mapping surveys (BINGO, FAST and SKA-I). Since dark energy is turned on at $z\sim 1$, which falls into the sensitivity range of these radio surveys, the HI intensity mapping technique is an efficient tool to constrain the interaction. By comparing with current constraints on dark sector interactions, we find that future radio surveys will produce tight an…
It has been found that, for the Supernova Legacy Survey three-year (SNLS3) data, there is strong evidence for the redshift-evolution of color-luminosity parameter $β$. In this paper, adopting the $w$-cold-dark-matter ($w$CDM) model and considering its interacting extensions (with three kinds of interaction between dark sectors), we explore the evolution of $β$ and its effects on parameter estimation. In addition to the SNLS3 data, we also take into account the Planck distance priors data of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the galaxy clustering (GC) data extracted from SDSS DR7 and BOSS,…
Constraints to the mass of a scalar field and the strength of its self-interacting coupling constant are obtained. This was done using observations of stellar dynamics at the center of our galaxy and by assuming that the dark compact object responsible of such dynamics is a boson star and not a supermassive black hole. We show that if such scalar field represents a spin-zero particle with cross section high enough to be considered collisional dark matter, there is a region of parameters compatible with both conditions: that the scalar field play the role of collisional dark matter and that it …
Using renormalization-group flow and cosmological constraints on inflation models, we exploit a unique connection between cosmological inflation and the dynamical mass of dark-matter particles in the luminogenesis model, a unification model with the gauge group $SU(3)_C \times SU(6) \times U(1)_Y$, which breaks to the Standard Model with an extra gauge group for dark matter when the inflaton rolls into the true vacuum. In this model, inflaton decay gives rise to dark matter, which in turn decays to luminous matter in the right proportion that agrees with cosmological data. Some attractive feat…
We present an investigation of the horizon and its effect on global 21-cm observations and analysis. We find that the horizon cannot be ignored when modeling low frequency observations. Even if the sky and antenna beam are known exactly, forward models cannot fully describe the beam-weighted foreground component without accurate knowledge of the horizon. When fitting data to extract the 21-cm signal, a single time-averaged spectrum or independent multi-spectrum fits may be able to compensate for the bias imposed by the horizon. However, these types of fits lack constraining power on the 21-cm …
It has been shown that gravitational waves propagate through ideal fluids without experiencing any dispersion or dissipation. However, if the medium has a non-zero shear viscosity $η$ , gravitational waves will be dissipated at a rate proportional to $G \,η$. We constrain dark matter and dark energy models with non-zero shear viscosity by calculating the dissipation of gravitational waves from GW150914 which propagate over a distance of $410\, $ Mpc through the dissipative fluid and comparing the data with the theoretical prediction. This provides a proof-of-principle demonstration of the fact…

The existence and detection of scalar fields could provide solutions to long-standing puzzles about the nature of dark matter, the dark compact objects at the centre of most galaxies, and other phenomena. Yet, self-interacting scalar fields are very poorly constrained by astronomical observations, leading to great uncertainties in estimates of the mass $m_ϕ$ and the self-interacting coupling constant $λ$ of these fields. To counter this, we have systematically employed available astronomical observations to develop new constraints, considerably restricting this parameter space. In particular, …
We compare the statistics and morphology of giant arcs in galaxy clusters using N-body and non-radiative SPH simulations within the standard cold dark matter model and simulations where dark matter has a non-negligible probability of interaction (parametrized by its cross-section), i.e self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). We use a ray-tracing technique to produce a statistically large number of arcs around six simulated galaxy clusters at different redshifts. Since dark matter is more likely to interact in colliding clusters than in relaxed clusters, and this probability of interaction is larg…
We consider an interacting field theory model that describes the dark energy - dark matter interaction. Only for a specific interaction term, this interacting field theory description has an equivalent interacting fluid description. For inverse power law potentials and linear interaction function, we show that the interacting dark sector model with field-fluid mapping is consistent with \textit{four cosmological data sets} -- Hubble parameter measurements (Hz), Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation data (BAO), Supernova Type Ia data (SN), and High redshift HII galaxy measurements (HIIG). More specific…
We examine a cosmological scenario where dark matter is coupled to a variable vacuum energy while baryons and photons are two decoupled components for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the updated observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmological parameters and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era. We show that our model fulfills the severe bound of $Ω_{x}(z\simeq 1100)<0.009$ at the $2σ$ level, so it is consistent with the recent analysis that includes cosmic microwave background anisotropy measurements from the P…
The observed surface densities of dark matter halos are known to follow a simple scaling law, ranging from dwarf galaxies to galaxy clusters, with a weak dependence on their virial mass. Here we point out that this can not only be used to provide a method to determine the standard relation between halo mass and concentration, but also to use large samples of objects in order to place constraints on dark matter self-interactions that can be more robust than constraints derived from individual objects. We demonstrate our method by considering a sample of about 50 objects distributed across the w…
We present the first branon dark matter (DM) search in the very high-energy gamma-ray band with observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue~1 carried out by the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope system. Branons are new degrees of freedom that appear in flexible brane-world models corresponding to brane fluctuations. They behave as weakly interacting massive particles, which are natural DM candidates. In the absence of a gamma-ray signal in the Segue~1 data, we place constraints on the branon DM parameter space by using a binned likelihood analysis. Our most cons…
We investigate the impacts of dark energy on constraining massive (active/sterile) neutrinos in interacting dark energy (IDE) models by using the current observations. We employ two typical IDE models, the interacting $w$ cold dark matter (I$w$CDM) model and the interacting holographic dark energy (IHDE) model, to make an analysis. To avoid large-scale instability, we use the parameterized post-Friedmann approach to calculate the cosmological perturbations in the IDE models. The cosmological observational data used in this work include the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies …
The recent observational evidence for the current cosmic acceleration have stimulated renewed interest in alternative cosmologies, such as scenarios with interaction in the dark sector (dark matter and dark energy). In general, such models contain an unknown negative-pressure dark component coupled with the pressureless dark matter and/or with the baryons that results in an evolution for the Universe rather different from the one predicted by the standard $Λ$CDM model. In this work we test the observational viability of such scenarios by using the most recent galaxy cluster gas mass fraction v…
The dynamics of interacting dark matter-dark energy models is characterized through an interaction rate function quantifying the energy flow between these dark sectors. In most of the interaction functions, the expansion rate Hubble function is considered and sometimes it is argued that, as the interaction function is a local property, the inclusion of the Hubble function may influence the overall dynamics. This is the starting point of the present article where we consider a very simple interacting cosmic scenario between vacuum energy and the cold dark matter characterized by various interac…
We investigate a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe that has an interacting dark matter, a modified holographic Ricci dark energy (MHRDE), plus a third, decoupled component that behaves as a radiation term. We consider a nonlinear interaction in the dark component densities and their derivatives up to second order. We apply the $χ^{2}$ method to the observational Hubble data for constraining the cosmological parameters and analyze the amount of dark energy in the radiation era for both MHRDE and holographic Ricci dark energy models. The former is consistent with the bound $Ω_{x…
Chameleon and symmetron theories serve as archetypal models for how light scalar fields can couple to matter with gravitational strength or greater, yet evade the stringent constraints from classical tests of gravity on Earth and in the Solar System. In this work, we investigate how a precision measurement of the electron magnetic moment places meaningful constraints on both chameleons and symmetrons. Two effects are identified: First, virtual chameleons and symmetrons run in loops to generate quantum corrections to the intrinsic value of the magnetic moment; a common process widely considered…
We present for the first time a suite of cosmological simulations for a particular class of interacting Dark Energy cosmologies characterised by a background expansion history constrained to be indistinguishable from $Λ$CDM. Such Constrained Interacting Dark Energy scenario -- or CIDER -- has been recently proposed by Barros et al. 2019 and has the appealing feature of suppressing structure formation at late times, thereby possibly alleviating the persisting $σ_{8}$ tension while leaving background observables unaffected. A crucial step to assess the viability of such scenarios is then represe…
We present the first search for signatures of brane-world extra-dimensional dark matter (DM) in the very-high-energy gamma-ray band by scrutinizing observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue 1 with the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope system. Branons are new degrees of freedom that appear within flexible brane-world models: they are weakly interacting massive particles and natural DM candidates. The ground-based gamma-ray telescopes MAGIC could indirectly detect branon DM in the multi-TeV mass range by observing secondary products of DM annihilation into Stand…
We investigate a model of interacting dark matter and dark energy given by a modified holographic Ricci cutoff in a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) space-time. We consider a nonlinear interaction consisting of a significant rational function of the total energy density and its first derivative homogeneous of degree one and show that the effective one-fluid obeys the equation of state of a relaxed Chaplygin gas. So that, the universe is dominated by pressureless dark matter at early times and undergoes an accelerated expansion in the far future driven by a strong negative pressu…
SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 is a gravitational lens system formed by a group of galaxies at redshift z=0.422 lensing a bright background galaxy at redshift z=2.001. The main peculiarity of this system is the presence of a luminous satellite near the Einstein radius, that slightly deforms the giant arc. This makes SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 the ideal system to test our grid-based Bayesian lens modelling method, designed to detect galactic satellites independently from their mass-to-light ratio, and to measure the mass of this dwarf galaxy despite its high redshift. Thanks to the pixelized source and…
We derive constraints on a coupled quintessence model with pure momentum exchange from the public $\sim$1000 deg$^2$ cosmic shear measurements from the Kilo-Degree Survey and the $\it{Planck}$ 2018 Cosmic Microwave Background data. We compare this model with $Λ$CDM and find similar $χ^2$ and log-evidence values. We accelerate parameter estimation by sourcing cosmological power spectra from the neural network emulator COSMOPOWER. We highlight the necessity of such emulator-based approaches to reduce the computational runtime of future similar analyses, particularly from Stage IV surveys. As an …
The nature of the Isotropic $γ$-ray Background (IGRB) measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi $γ$-ray space Telescope ({\it Fermi}) remains partially unexplained. Non-negligible contributions may originate from extragalactic populations of unresolved sources such as blazars, star-forming galaxies or galactic milli-second pulsars. A recent prediction of the diffuse $γ$-ray emission from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with a large viewing angle with respect to the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) has demonstrated that this faint but numerous population is also expected to contribute signific…
To shed light on the fundamental problems posed by Dark Energy and Dark Matter, a large number of experiments have been performed and combined to constrain cosmological models. We propose a novel way of quantifying the information gained by updates on the parameter constraints from a series of experiments which can either complement earlier measurements or replace them. For this purpose, we use the Kullback-Leibler divergence or relative entropy from information theory to measure differences in the posterior distributions in model parameter space from a pair of experiments. We apply this forma…

Observations of the high redshift universe provide a promising avenue for constraining the nature of the dark matter (DM). This will be even more true with the advent of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We run cosmological simulations of galaxy formation as part of the Effective Theory of Structure Formation (ETHOS) project to compare high redshift galaxies in Cold (CDM) and alternative DM models which have varying relativistic coupling and self-interaction strengths. The interacting DM scenarios produce a cutoff in the linear power spectrum on small-scales, followed by a series of "dark…
The idea of Dark Matter (DM) with self interaction was invoked to resolve a number of discrepancies between the simulation based predictions by collisionless cold DM and the astrophysical observations on galactic and subgalactic scales. Evidences for self interaction would have striking implications for particle nature of DM. In order to reconcile such astrophysical observations for self interaction with particle properties for DM, we consider the general scenario of self interacting Dirac fermionic DM, $χ$. Also since the exact particle physics model for DM is yet to be probed, we simply adop…
By detecting redshift drift in the spectra of Lyman-$α$ forest of distant quasars, Sandage-Loeb (SL) test directly measures the expansion of the universe, covering the "redshift desert" of $2 \lesssim z \lesssim5$. Thus this method is definitely an important supplement to the other geometric measurements and will play a crucial role in cosmological constraints. In this paper, we quantify the ability of SL test signal by a CODEX-like spectrograph for constraining interacting dark energy. Four typical interacting dark energy models are considered: (i) $Q=γHρ_c$, (ii) $Q=γHρ_{de}$, (iii) $Q=γH_0ρ…
We study the effect of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and baryons on the shape of early-type galaxies (ETGs) and their dark matter haloes, comparing them to the predictions of the cold dark matter (CDM) scenario. We use five hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations of haloes hosting ETGs ($M_{\rm vir}\sim 10^{13}M_{\odot}$ and $M_{*}\sim10^{11}M_{\odot}$), simulated in CDM and a SIDM model with constant cross-section of $σ_T/m_χ= 1\ \mathrm{cm}^2 \mathrm{g}^{-1}$. We measure the three-dimensional and projected shapes of the dark matter haloes and their baryonic content using the inertia tensor …
