In this work, a design for a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser (QCL) frequency comb source that enhances the high frequency response and the comb characteristics of the device is presented . A state-of-the-art active region (AR), grown on a heavily n-doped InP:Si substrate, was processed into a buried heterostructure with a microstrip-like line waveguide. As a result, the repetition rate frequency $f_{rep}$, around 11.09 GHz, can be locked to an injected narrow-linewidth radio frequency (RF) signal, over a range of more than 200 kHz with -10 dBm of injected power, which outperforms normal buried heterostructure schemes by an order of magnitude. Moreover, under RF injection at powers higher than 20 dBm, the lasing spectrum is flattened and significantly broadened, from 24 $cm^{-1}$ to 65 $cm^{-1}$ in bandwidth, while at the same time the coherence of the comb is maintained and verified.
Topological waveguides have been extensively studied for their robust transmission properties immune to defects and their application potentials for microwave and terahertz integrated circuits. In this work, by using grounded planar valley-Hall photonic topological insulators, a high-efficiency topological directional coupler fed directly by microstrip line with configurable coupling coefficient is theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The topological directional coupler consists of two coupled topological waveguides, which can be directly integrated with microstrip circuits.…
A theoretical formalism for the description of the interaction of microwave photons with a thin (compared to the photon wavelength) magnetic metasurface comprised of dipolarly interacting nano-scale magnetic elements is developed. A scattering matrix describing the processes of photon transmission and reflection at the metasurface boundary is derived. As an example of the use of the developed formalism, it is demonstrated, that the introduction of a magnetic metasurface inside a microstrip electromagnetic waveguide quantitatively changes the dispersion relation of the fundamental waveguide mod…
We present quantum cascade laser (QCL) frequency comb devices with engineered waveguides for managing the dispersion. The QCL waveguide consists of multiple sections with different waveguide widths. The narrow and wide sections of the waveguide are designed in a way to compensate the group velocity dispersion (GVD) of each other and thereby produce a flat and slightly negative GVD for the QCL. The QCL exhibits continuous comb operation over a large part of the dynamic range of the laser. Strong and narrow-linewidth intermode beatnotes are achieved in more than 300 mA wide operation current ran…
Low propagation loss in high confinement waveguides is critical for chip-based nonlinear photonics applications. Sophisticated fabrication processes which yield sub-nm roughness are generally needed to reduce scattering points at the waveguide interfaces in order to achieve ultralow propagation loss. Here, we show ultralow propagation loss by shaping the mode using a highly multimode structure to reduce its overlap with the waveguide interfaces, thus relaxing the fabrication processing requirements. Microresonators with intrinsic quality factors (Q) of 31.8 $\pm$ 4.4 million are experimentally…
Electro-optic (EO) modulators rely on interaction of optical and electrical signals with second-order nonlinear media. For the optical signal, this interaction can be strongly enhanced by using dielectric slot-waveguide structures that exploit a field discontinuity at the interface between a high-index waveguide core and the low-index EO cladding. In contrast to this, the electrical signal is usually applied through conductive regions in the direct vicinity of the optical waveguide. To avoid excessive optical loss, the conductivity of these regions is maintained at a moderate level, thus leadi…
Optical frequency combs have become a very powerful tool in metrology and beyond thanks to their ability to link radio frequencies with optical frequencies via a process known as self-referencing. Typical self-referencing is accomplished in two steps: the generation of an octave-spanning supercontinuum spectrum and the frequency-doubling of one part of that spectrum. Traditionally, these two steps have been performed by two separate optical components. With the advent of photonic integrated circuits, the combination of these two steps has become possible in a single small and monolithic chip. …
A traveling wave model for a semiconductor diode laser based on quantum wells is presented as well as a comprehensive theoretical model of the lasing dynamics produced by the intensity discrimination of the nonlinear mode-coupling in a waveguide array. By leveraging a recently developed model for the detailed semiconductor gain dynamics, the temporal shaping effects of the nonlinear mode-coupling induced by the waveguide arrays can be characterized. Specifically, the enhanced nonlinear pulse shaping provided by the waveguides are capable of generating stable frequency combs wavelength of 800 n…
We present a monolithic solution to extract efficiently light from terahertz quantum cascade lasers with metal-metal waveguides suitable for broadband frequency comb applications. The design is optimized for a bandwidth of 500 GHz around a center frequency of 2.6 THz. A five-fold increase in total output power is observed compared to standard metal-metal waveguides. The extractor features a single-lobed far-field pattern and increases the frequency comb dynamical range to cover more than 50 % of the laser dynamic range. Frequency comb operation up to a spectral bandwidth of 670 GHz is achieved…
We present an integrated hybrid semiconductor-dielectric (InP-Si$_3$N$_4$) waveguide laser that generates frequency combs at a wavelength around 1.5 $μ$m with a record-low intrinsic optical linewidth of 34 kHz. This is achieved by extending the cavity photon lifetime using a low-loss dielectric waveguide circuit. In our experimental demonstration, the on-chip, effective optical path length of the laser cavity is extended to 6 cm. The resulting linewidth narrowing shows the high potential of on-chip, highly coherent frequency combs with direct electrical pumping, based on hybrid and heterogeneo…
Much progress, both experimentally and theoretically, has recently been made towards optical frequency comb generation from continuously pumped second-order nonlinear systems. Here, we present the first observations towards finding an integrated solution for such a system, using a titanium indiffused lithium niobate waveguide resonator. These results are compared to recently developed theory for equivalent systems. The system is seen to exhibit strong instabilities, which require further investigation in order to fully determine the suitability of this platform for stable optical frequency com…
We demonstrate efficient generation of mid-infrared frequency combs based on continuous-wave-seeded femtosecond optical parametric generation in nonlinear waveguides. Conversion of the near-infrared pump to signal and idler light takes place with very high efficiency (74 %) and the threshold (25 pJ) is over 300 times lower than in bulk analogs. Relative intensity noise of the mid-infrared comb is exceptionally low, below 5*10-5 (detector-limited, integrated from 10 Hz to 2 MHz). Furthermore, the mid-infrared bandwidth can be increased by driving the process with broadband pump obtained via sup…
We utilize silicon-nitride waveguides to self-reference a telecom-wavelength fiber frequency comb through supercontinuum generation, using 11.3 mW of optical power incident on the chip. This is approximately ten times lower than conventional approaches using nonlinear fibers and is enabled by low-loss (<2 dB) input coupling and the high nonlinearity of silicon nitride, which can provide two octaves of spectral broadening with incident energies of only 110 pJ. Following supercontinuum generation, self-referencing is accomplished by mixing 780-nm dispersive-wave light with the frequency-doubled …
We demonstrate an octave-spanning frequency comb with a spectrum covering wavelengths from 1,540 nm up to 3,200 nm. The supercontinuum is generated by pumping a 1-cm long dispersion engineered silicon wire waveguide by 70 fs pulses with an energy of merely 15 pJ. We confirm the phase coherence of the output spectrum by beating the supercontinuum with narrow bandwidth CW lasers. We show that the experimental results are in agreement with numerical simulations.
Ultraviolet frequency combs enable applications ranging from precision spectroscopy to atomic clocks by addressing the electronic transitions of atoms and molecules. Access to ultraviolet light via integrated nonlinear optics is usually hampered by the strong material dispersion and large waveguide attention in the ultraviolet region. Here we demonstrate a simple route to chip-scale ultraviolet comb generators, simultaneously showing a gap-free frequency span of ~128 terahertz and supercontinuum sourced by an ultrafast fiber laser. The simultaneous cubic and quadratic nonlinear processes are i…
We experimentally demonstrate a simple configuration for mid-infrared (MIR) frequency comb generation in quasi-phase-matched lithium niobate waveguides using the cascaded-$χ^{(2)}$ nonlinearity. With nanojoule-scale pulses from an Er:fiber laser, we observe octave-spanning supercontinuum in the near-infrared with dispersive-wave generation in the 2.5--3 $\textμ$m region and intra-pulse difference-frequency generation in the 4--5 $\textμ$m region. By engineering the quasi-phase-matched grating profiles, tunable, narrow-band MIR and broadband MIR spectra are both observed in this geometry. Final…
Dispersion engineering is among the most important steps towards a promising optical frequency comb. We propose a new and general approach to trim frequency combs using a self-adaptive boundary of the optical mode at different wavelengths in a sub-wavelength structured waveguide. The feasibility of ultra-wide bandwidth dispersion engineering comes from the fact that light at different wavelengths automatically self-adapts to slightly different effective spatial spans determined by the effective indices of the mode. Using this self-adaptive variation on the confinement, we open up the window of…
Using aluminum-nitride photonic-chip waveguides, we generate optical-frequency-comb supercontinuum spanning from 500 nm to 4000 nm with a 0.8 nJ seed pulse, and show that the spectrum can be tailored by changing the waveguide geometry. Since aluminum nitride exhibits both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, the spectra feature simultaneous contributions from numerous nonlinear mechanisms: supercontinuum generation, difference-frequency generation, second-harmonic generation, and third-harmonic generation. As one application of integrating multiple nonlinear processes, we measure and stabilize …
We explore the possibility to excite the so-called embedded solitons in specially designed slot waveguides based on silicon and silica or silicon nanocrystals. This requires the excitation of the structure with quasi-TM polarized pulses -- for which Raman effect is absent -- and at a specific infrared wavelength for which only the second- and fourth-order group velocity coefficients are non-vanishing. Pulses launched in these conditions will generate a spectrally localized continuum, associated to a frequency comb coming from the spectral interference of many embedded solitons.
Nanophotonic waveguides with sub-wavelength mode confinement and engineered dispersion profiles are an excellent platform for application-tailored nonlinear optical interactions at low pulse energies. Here, we present fully air clad suspended-silicon waveguides for infrared frequency comb generation with optical bandwidth limited only by the silicon transparency. The achieved spectra are lithographically tailored to span 2.1 octaves in the mid-infrared (2.0-8.5 um or 1170--5000 cm-1) when pumped at 3.10 um with 100 pJ pulses. Novel fork-shaped couplers provide efficient input coupling with onl…
Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful tool for basic and applied science. The molecular spectral fingerprints in the 3 um to 20 um region provide a means to uniquely identify molecular structure for fundamental spectroscopy, atmospheric chemistry, trace and hazardous gas detection, and biological microscopy. Driven by such applications, the development of low-noise, coherent laser sources with broad, tunable coverage is a topic of great interest. Laser frequency combs possess a unique combination of precisely defined spectral lines and broad bandwidth that can enable the above-mentioned applicat…
The generation of optical frequency combs via direct electrical pumping of semiconductor lasers is an attractive alternative to the well-established mode-locked laser sources in terms of compactness, robustness and integrability. However, the high chromatic dispersion of bulk semiconductor materials can prevent the generation of frequency combs or lead to undesired pulse lengthening. In this letter, we present a novel dual waveguide for intracavity dispersion compensation in semiconductor lasers. We apply the concept to a short mid-infrared wavelength quantum cascade laser operating in the fir…
Material characteristics and input-field specifics limit the controllability of nonlinear electromagnetic-field interactions. As these nonlinear interactions could be exploited to create strongly localized bright and dark waves, such as nonlinear surface polaritons, ameliorating this limitation is important. We present our approach to amelioration, which is based on a surface-polaritonic waveguide reconfiguration that enables excitation, propagation and coherent control of coupled dark rogue waves having orthogonal polarizations. Our control mechanism is achieved by finely tuning laser-field i…
We study Kerr frequency combs and dissipative Kerr solitons in silicon photonic crystal coupled-cavity waveguides (CCW) with globally optimized dispersion at telecom wavelengths. The corresponding threshold for comb generation is found to explicitly depend on the main CCW figures of merit, namely, mode volume, normal mode quality factor and slow-light group index. Our analysis is carried out by solving the non-linear dynamics of the CCW Bloch modes in presence of Kerr non-linearity and two-photon absorption. Our results open the way to CCW comb generation via dispersion engineering and slow-li…
Frequency combs spanning over an octave have been successfully demonstrated in Kerr nonlinear microresonators on-chip. These micro-combs rely on both engineered dispersion, to enable generation of frequency components across the octave, and on engineered coupling, to efficiently extract the generated light into an access waveguide while maintaining a close to critically-coupled pump. The latter is challenging as the spatial overlap between the access waveguide and the ring modes decays with frequency. This leads to strong coupling variation across the octave, with poor extraction at short wave…
Mid-infrared optical frequency combs are of significant interest for molecular spectroscopy due to the large absorption of molecular vibrational modes on one hand, and the ability to implement superior comb-based spectroscopic modalities with increased speed, sensitivity and precision on the other hand. Substantial advances in mid-infrared frequency comb generation have been made in recent years based on nonlinear frequency conversion, microresonator Kerr frequency combs, quantum cascade lasers and mode locking regimes. Here we demonstrate a simple, yet effective method for the direct generati…
We have demonstrated what we believe to be the first waveguide photonic crystal cavity operating in the mid-infrared. The devices were fabricated from Ge23Sb7S70 chalcogenide glass on CaF2 substrates by combing photolithographic patterning and focus ion beam milling. The waveguide-coupled cavities were characterized using a fiber end fire coupling method at 5.2 μm wavelength, and a loaded quality factor of ~ 2,000 was measured near the critical coupling regime.
Coupling quantum emitters and nanostructures, in particular cold atoms and waveguides, has recently raised a large interest due to unprecedented possibilities of engineering light-matter interactions. However, the implementation of these promising concepts has been hampered by various theoretical and experimental issues. In this work, we propose a new type of periodic dielectric waveguide that provides strong interactions between atoms and guided photons with an unusual dispersion. We design an asymmetric comb waveguide that supports a slow mode with a quartic (instead of quadratic) dispersion…
Microcombs -- optical frequency combs generated in coherently-driven nonlinear microresonators -- have attracted significant attention over the last decade. The ability to generate two such combs in a single resonator device has in particular enabled a host of applications from spectroscopy to imaging. Concurrently, novel comb generation techniques such as synchronous pulsed driving have been developed to enhance the efficiency and flexibility of microcomb generation. Here we report on the first experimental demonstration of dual-microcomb generation via synchronous pulsed pumping of a single …
We report on a combined theoretical and experimental study of the optical coupling between a microdisk resonator and a waveguide laying on different planes. While the lateral coupling between a planar resonator and a waveguide is characterized by a unique distance at which the resonant waveguide transmission vanishes because of destructive interference, the vertical coupling geometry exhibits an oscillatory behavior in the coupling amplitude as a function of the vertical gap. This effect manifests experimentally as oscillations in both the waveguide transmission and the mode quality factor. An…
Directly accessing the middle infrared, the molecular functional group spectral region, via supercontinuum generation processes based on turn-key fiber lasers offers the undeniable advantage of simplicity and robustness. Recently, the assessment of the coherence of the mid-IR dispersive wave in silicon nitride waveguides, pumped at telecom wavelength, established an important first step towards mid-IR frequency comb generation based on such compact systems. Yet, the spectral reach and efficiency still fall short for practical implementation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate for the first ti…
High-harmonic generation (HHG) provides short-wavelength light that is useful for precision spectroscopy and probing ultrafast dynamics. We report efficient, phase-coherent harmonic generation up to 9th-order (333 nm) in chirped periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides driven by phase-stable $\leq$12-nJ, 100 fs pulses at 3 $μ$m with 100 MHz repetition rate. A mid-infrared to ultraviolet-visible conversion efficiency as high as 10% is observed, amongst an overall 23% conversion of the fundamental to all harmonics. We verify the coherence of the harmonic frequency combs despite the complex …
Kerr frequency combs from microresonators are now extensively investigated as a potentially portable technology for a variety of applications. Most studies employ anomalous dispersion microresonators that support modulational instability for comb initiation, and mode-locking transitions resulting in coherent bright soliton-like pulse generation have been reported. However, some experiments show comb generation in normal dispersion microresonators; simulations suggest the formation of dark pulse temporal profiles. Excitation of dark pulse solutions is difficult due to the lack of modulational i…
High-Q microresonator has been suggested a promising platform for optical frequency comb generation, via dissipative soliton formation. To achieve a higher Q and obtain the necessary anomalous dispersion, $Si_3N_4$ microresonators made of multi-mode waveguides were previously implemented. However, coupling between different transverse mode families in the multi-mode waveguides results in periodic disruption of dispersion and quality factor, introducing perturbation to dissipative soliton formation and amplitude modulation to the corresponding spectrum. Careful choice of pump wavelength to avoi…
We theoretically investigate the interaction of a single quantum dipole with the modes of a fiber-coupled semiconductor waveguide. Through a combination of tight modal confinement and phase-matched evanescent coupling, we predict that approximately 70 % of the dipole's emission can be collected into a single mode optical fiber. Calculations further show that the dipole strongly modifies resonant light transmission through the system, with over an order of magnitude change possible for an appropriate choice of fiber-waveguide coupler geometry.
We predict that all-optically reconfigurable generation of photon pairs with tailored spatial entanglement can be realized via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in integrated nonlinear coupled waveguides. The required elements of the output quantum wavefunction are directly mapped from the amplitudes and phases of the classical laser pump inputs in each waveguide. This is achieved through special nonuniform domain poling, which locally inverts the sign of quadratic nonlinear susceptibility and accordingly shapes the interference of biphoton quantum states generated along the waveguides. W…
A broadband visible blue-to-red, 10 GHz repetition rate frequency comb is generated by combined spectral broadening and triple-sum frequency generation in an on-chip silicon nitride waveguide. Ultra-short pulses of 150 pJ pulse energy, generated via electro-optic modulation of a 1560 nm continuous-wave laser, are coupled to a silicon nitride waveguide giving rise to a broadband near-infrared supercontinuum. Modal phase matching inside the waveguide allows direct triple-sum frequency transfer of the near-infrared supercontinuum into the visible wavelength range covering more than 250 THz from b…
We report on the first realization of an integrated optical memory for light based on a laser written waveguide in a doped crystal. Using femto-second laser micromachining, we fabricate waveguides in Pr$^{3+}$:Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal. We demonstrate that the waveguide inscription does not affect the coherence properties of the material and that the light confinement in the waveguide increases the interaction with the active ions by a factor 6. We also demonstrate that, analogously to the bulk crystals, we can operate the optical pumping protocols necessary to prepare the population in atomic freq…
We develop a rigorous theoretical framework for interaction-induced phenomena in the waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) driven by mechanical oscillations of the qubits. Specifically, we predict that the simplest set-up of two qubits, harmonically trapped over an optical waveguide, enables the ultrastrong coupling regime of the quantum optomechanical interaction. Moreover, the combination of the inherent open nature of the system and the strong optomechanical coupling leads to emerging parity-time (\PT) symmetry, quite unexpected for a purely quantum system without artificially engineered …
We report a study of the quantum dot emission in short photonic crystal waveguides. We observe that the quantum dot photoluminescence intensity and decay rate are strongly enhanced when the emission energy is in resonance with Fabry-Perot cavity modes in the slow-light regime of the dispersion curve. The experimental results are in agreement with previous theoretical predictions and further supported by three-dimensional finite element simulation. Our results show that the combination of slow group velocity and Fabry-Perot cavity resonance provides an avenue to efficiently channel photons from…
Supercontinuum generation using chip-integrated photonic waveguides is a powerful approach for spectrally broadening pulsed laser sources with very low pulse energies and compact form factors. When pumped with a mode-locked laser frequency comb, these waveguides can coherently expand the comb spectrum to more than an octave in bandwidth to enable self-referenced stabilization. However, for applications in frequency metrology and precision spectroscopy, it is desirable to not only support self-referencing, but also to generate low-noise combs with customizable broadband spectra. In this work, w…
Nanophotonic interfaces between single emitters and light promise to enable new quantum optical technologies. Here, we use a combination of finite element simulations and analytic quantum theory to investigate the interaction of various quantum emitters with slot-waveguide rings. We predict that for rings with radii as small as 1.44 $μ$m (Q = 27,900), near-unity emitter-waveguide coupling efficiencies and emission enhancements on the order of 1300 can be achieved. By tuning the ring geometry or introducing losses, we show that realistic emitter-ring systems can be made to be either weakly or s…
Advanced quantum information science and technology (QIST) applications place exacting de- mands on optical components. Quantum waveguide circuits offer a route to scalable QIST on a chip. Superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs) provide infrared single-photon sensitivity combined with low dark counts and picosecond timing resolution. In this study we bring these two technologies together. Using SSPDs we observe a two-photon interference visibility of 92.3\pm1.0% in a silica-on-silicon waveguide directional coupler at \lamda = 804 nm-higher than that measured with silicon detectors (89.…
