Due to the low nuclear recoils, sub-GeV dark matter (DM) is usually beyond the sensitivity of the conventional DM direct detection experiments. The boosted and Migdal scattering mechanisms have been proposed as two new complementary avenues to search for light DM. In this work, we consider the momentum-transfer effect in the DM-nucleus scattering to derive the new bounds on sub-GeV DM for these two scenarios. We show that such an effect is sizable so that the existing bounds on the DM-nucleus scattering cross section can be improved significantly.
Motivated by the current strong constraints on the spin-independent dark matter (DM)-nucleus scattering, we investigate the spin-dependent (SD) interactions of the light Majorana DM with the nucleus mediated by an axial-vector boson. Due to the small nucleus recoil energy, the ionization signals have now been used to probe the light dark matter particles in direct detection experiments. With the existing ionization data, we derive the exclusion limits on the SD DM-nucleus scattering through Migdal effect in the MeV-GeV DM mass range. It is found that the lower limit of the DM mass can reach ab…
The XENON1T experiment has recently announced the observation of an excess in electron recoil events at energy range of $1-7$ keV with a $3.5~σ$ signal significance over the Standard Model prediction. In this letter we sketch the prospects of explaining such an excess from Migdal ionization events with below threshold nuclear recoil energies. Interestingly, these are expected to show signal events in the ballpark energy scale of the observed excess. We demonstrate that the observed signal can be reproduced through the Migdal effect by an $\mathcal{O}(1)$ GeV neutron-philic dark matter having a…
Detections of non-gravitational interactions of massive dark matter (DM) with visible sector so far have given null results. The DM may communicate with the ordinary matter only through gravitational interaction. Besides, the majority of traditional direct detections have poor sensitivities for light DM because of the small recoil energy. Thanks to the high energy cosmic rays (CRs), the light DM can be boosted by scattering with CRs and thus may be detected in the ongoing experiments. In this work, we derive the exclusion limits on the cosmic ray boosted sub-GeV DM with gravitational mediator …
There are currently several existing and proposed experiments designed to probe sub-GeV dark matter (DM) using electron ionization in various materials. The projected signal rates for these experiments assume that this ionization yield arises only from DM scattering directly off electron targets, ignoring secondary ionization contributions from DM scattering off nuclear targets. We investigate the validity of this assumption and show that if sub-GeV DM couples with comparable strength to both protons and electrons, as would be the case for a dark photon mediator, the ionization signal from ato…
The search for dark matter weakly interacting massive particles with noble liquids has probed masses down and below a GeV/c^2. The ultimate limit is represented by the experimental threshold on the energy transfer to the nuclear recoil. Currently, the experimental sensitivity has reached a threshold equivalent to a few ionization electrons. In these conditions, the contribution of a Bremsstrahlung photon or a so-called Migdal electron due to the sudden acceleration of a nucleus after a collision might be sizable. In the present work, we use a Bayesian approach to study how these effects can be…
We analyze within the light-cone path integral approach [4] the recent CERN SPS data [19] on the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for photon bremsstrahlung in quantum regime from 149, 207, and 287 GeV electrons. Calculations have been carried out treating accurately the Coulomb effects and including the inelastic processes. Comparison with experiment is performed accounting for multi-photon emission. Our results are in good agreement with the data.
The recent data of the SLAC E-146 collaboration on the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for bremsstrahlung from 8 and 25 GeV electrons are analyzed within a rigorous light-cone path integral approach. Numerical calculations have been carried out treating rigorously the Coulomb effects and including the inelastic processes. Comparison with the experimental data is performed taking into account multi-photon emission and photon absorption. For most of the targets the theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.
It is proposed to identify a strong electric field - created during relativistic collisions of asymmetric nuclei - via the observation of pseudorapidity and transverse momentum distributions of hadrons with the same mass but opposite charge. The results of detailed calculations within the Parton-Hadron String Dynamics (PHSD) approach for the charge-dependent directed flow $v_1$ are presented for semi-central Cu+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV incorporating the inverse Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (iLPM) effect, which accounts for a delay in the electromagnetic interaction with the charged…
The Migdal effect in a dark-matter-nucleus scattering extends the direct search experiments to the sub-GeV mass region through electron ionization with sub-keV detection thresholds. In this paper, we derive a rigorous and model-independent "Migdal-photoabsorption" relation that links the sub-keV Migdal process to photoabsorption. This relation is free of theoretical uncertainties as it only requires the photoabsorption cross section as the experimental input. Validity of this relation is explicitly checked in the case of xenon with an state-of-the-arts atomic calculation that is well-benchmark…
When a nucleus in an atom undergoes a collision, there is a small probability to inelastically excite an electron as a result of the Migdal effect. In this Letter, we present a first complete derivation of the Migdal effect from dark matter-nucleus scattering in semiconductors, which also accounts for multiphonon production. The rate can be expressed in terms of the energy loss function of the material, which we calculate with density functional theory (DFT) methods. Because of the smaller gap for electron excitations, we find that the rate for the Migdal effect is much higher in semiconductor…
The Migdal effect has received much attention from the dark matter direct detection community, in particular due to its power in setting limits on sub-GeV particle dark matter. Currently, there is no experimental confirmation of the Migdal effect through nuclear scattering using Standard Model probes. In this work, we extend existing calculations of the Migdal effect to the case of neutron-nucleus scattering, with a particular focus on neutron scattering angle distributions in silicon. We identify kinematic regimes wherein the assumptions present in current calculations of the Migdal effect ho…
A rigorous evaluation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for finite-size targets is performed within the path integral approach previously developed in ref. [4]. The bremsstrahlung rate in QED is expressed through a solution of a two-dimensional Schrödinger equation with an imaginary potential. The boundary condition for this solution is formulated in terms of a product of the light-cone electron--photon wave function and the dipole cross section for scattering of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair off an atom. Numerical calculations are performed for homogeneous and structured targets. Our predictions fo…
The explorations of alternative dark matter (DM) candidates beyond WIMP motivated primordial black holes (PBHs) or sub-GeV DM particle in the Milky Way. Neutrinos from PBH evaporation at the present times play as a novel medium boosting sub-GeV DM and leaving signatures in the terrestrial experiments. We explore the boosted DM by the neutrino flux from PBH evaporation (PBH$ν$BDM) so as to connect the macroscopic PBHs to sub-GeV DM particle. We consider this PBH$ν$BDM scenario to interpret the XENON1T keV excess. The projected bounds on the sub-GeV DM-electron scattering cross section and the f…
We consider the di-photon signal arises from two bunches of collimated photon jets emitting from a pair of highly boosted scalars. Following the discussion of detecting the photon jets at the collider, we extend the two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) by adding a gauge singlet scalar. To explain the di-photon excess which is recently observed at the first 13 TeV run of the LHC, the mixing between the heavy doublet state and the newly added singlet is crucially needed. After the mixing, one can have a heavy Higgs state $Y_2$ at 750 GeV and a very singlet-like scalar $Y_1$ of sub-GeV, which would be …
We point out a new type of diurnal effect for the cosmic ray boosted dark matter (DM). The DM-nucleon interactions not only allow the direct detection of DM with nuclear recoils, but also allow cosmic rays to scatter with and boost the nonrelativistic DM to higher energies. If the DM-nuclei scattering cross sections are sufficiently large, the DM flux is attenuated as it propagates through the Earth, leading to a strong diurnal modulation. This diurnal modulation provides another prominent signature for the direct detection of boosted sub-GeV DM, in addition to signals with higher recoil energ…
The Migdal effect inside detectors provides a new possibility of probing the sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles. While there has been well-established methods treating the Migdal effect in isolated atoms, a coherent and complete description of the valence electrons in semiconductor is still absent. The bremstrahlung-like approach is a promising attempt, but it turns invalid for DM masses below a few tens of MeV. In this paper, we lay out a framework where phonon is chosen as an effective degree of freedom to describe the Migdal effect in semiconductors. In this picture, a valence electron is e…
A key strategy for the direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter is to search for small ionization signals. These can arise from dark matter-electron scattering or when the dark matter-nucleus scattering process is accompanied by a "Migdal" electron. We show that the theoretical descriptions of both processes are closely related, which allows for a principal mapping between dark matter-electron and dark matter-nucleus scattering rates once the dark matter interactions with matter are specified. We explore this parametric relationship for noble-liquid targets and, for the first time, provide an e…
Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the suddenly recoiled atom struck by dark matter (DM) particle is much more likely to excite or lose its electrons than expected. Such Migdal effect provides a new avenue for exploring the sub-GeV DM particles. There have been various attempts to describe the Migdal effect in liquids and semiconductor targets. In this paper we incorporate the treatment of the bremsstrahlung process and the electronic many-body effects to give a full description of the Migdal effect in bulk semiconductor targets diamond and silicon. Compared with the results obtain…
A new rigorous light-cone path integral approach to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in QED and QCD is discussed. The rate of photon (gluon) radiation by an electron (quark) in a medium is expressed through the Green's function of a two-dimensional Schrodinger equation with an imaginary potential. In QED this potential is proportional to the dipole cross section for scattering of e+e- pair off an atom, in QCD it is proportional to the cross section of interaction of the color singlet quark-antiquark-gluon system with a medium constituent. In QED our predictions agree well with the photon s…
Usually information from early eras such as reheating is hard to come by. In this paper we argue that, given the right circumstances, right-handed sterile neutrinos decaying to left-handed active ones at relatively late times can carry information from reheating by propagating freely over the thermal history. For not too small mixing angles, suitable right-handed neutrino masses are around ${\cal O}$(MeV-GeV). We identify the typical spectra and argue that they provide information on the ratio of the inflaton mass to the reheating temperature. This primordial neutrino signal can be strong enou…
Dark matter direct detection experiments have limited sensitivity to light dark matter (below a few GeV), due to the challenges of lowering energy thresholds for the detection of nuclear recoil to below $\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{keV})$. While impressive progress has been made on this front, light dark matter remains the least constrained region of dark-matter parameter space. It has been shown that both ionization and excitation due to the Migdal effect and coherently-emitted photon bremsstrahlung from the recoiling atom can provide observable channels for light dark matter that would otherwise hav…
Dark Matter experiments searching for Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) primarily use nuclear recoils (NRs) in their attempt to detect WIMPs. Migdal-induced electronic recoils (ERs) provide additional sensitivity to light Dark Matter with $\mathcal{O}(\text{GeV}/c^2)$ masses. In this work, we use Bayesian inference to find the parameter space where future detectors like XENONnT and SuperCDMS SNOLAB will be able to detect WIMP Dark Matter through NRs, Migdal-induced ERs or a combination thereof. We identify regions where each detector is best at constraining the Dark Matter mass and …
Top polarization is an important probe of new physics that couples to the top sector, and which may be discovered at the 14 TeV LHC. Taking the example of the MSSM, we argue that top polarization measurements can put a constraint on the soft supersymmetry breaking parameter A_t. In light of the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson of mass ~125 GeV, a large A_t is a prediction of many supersymmetric models. To this end, we develop a *detector level* analysis methodology for extracting polarization information from hadronic tops using boosted jet substructure. We show that with 100 fb^(-1) of …
We consider a renormalizable messenger sector with magic messenger fields instead of usual SU(5) complete multiplets. We derive the soft supersymmetry breaking terms and show that the gaugino sector can be parameterized by only two parameters. These parameters can be chosen appropriately to obtain various patterns of gaugino masses and different ratios among them. The sfermion sector can also be characterized by two independent parameters which can be adjusted to change the relative masses of squarks and sleptons. A judicious choice of parameters also allows us to achieve the lightest Higgs bo…

The production of the Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a vector boson, followed by the dominant decay to $H \rightarrow b\bar{b}$, is a strong prospect for confirming and measuring the coupling to $b$-quarks in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV. We present an updated study of the prospects for this analysis, focussing on the most sensitive highly Lorentz-boosted region. The evolution of the efficiency and composition of the signal and main background processes as a function of the transverse momentum of the vector boson are studied covering the region $200-1000$ GeV, comparing…
The Higgs field in the standard model (SM) may couple to new physics sectors related with dark matter and/or massive neutrinos. In this paper we propose a novel signature, the boosted di-Higgs boson plus \ET (which is either a dark matter or neutrino), to probe those new physics sectors. In a large class of models, in particular the supersymmetric SMs and low scale seesaw mechanisms, this signature can play a key role. The signature has clear background, and at the $\sqrt s=$14 TeV high luminosity (HL-)LHC, we can probe it with production rate as low as $\sim$ 0.1 fb. We apply it to benchmark …
We use modern jet-substructure techniques to propose LHC searches for multijet-resonance signals without leptons or missing energy. We focus on three-jet resonances produced by R-parity-violating decays of boosted gluinos, showing that shape analyses searching for a mass peak can probe such gluinos up to masses of ~ 750 GeV (650 GeV) with 20/fb (5/fb) at the LHC at 8 TeV. This complements existing search strategies, which also include counting methods that are inherently more prone to systematic uncertainties. Since R-parity-violating gluinos lighter than all squarks hadronize before decaying,…
We propose to search for a boosted dark matter (DM) particle from astrophysical sources using an emulsion detector in deep underground facilities. We further propose using high-$Z$ material such as the lead for a larger DM-nucleus coherent scattering cross section above a threshold. The boosted DM will scatter into an excited DM. While the nuclear recoil energy is not detected, the decay products from the excited DM can be recorded by the proposed detector. Backgrounds such as the high energy solar neutrinos can be controlled by the reconstructed track topology. The proposed detector has the p…

The dark matter (DM) can consist of the primordial black holes (PBHs) in addition to the conventional weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The Poisson fluctuations of the PBH number density produce the isocurvature perturbations which can dominate the matter power spectrum at small scales and enhance the early structure formation. We study how the WIMP annihilation from those early formed structures can affect the CMB (in particular the E-mode polarization anisotropies and $y$-type spectral distortions) and global 21cm signals. Our studies would be of particular interest for the light…
Indirect dark matter (DM) detection typically involves the observation of standard model (SM) particles emerging from DM annihilation/decay inside regions of high dark matter concentration. We consider an annihilation scenario in which this reaction has to be initiated by one of the DMs involved being boosted while the other is an ambient non-relativistic particle. This "trigger" DM must be created, for example, in a previous annihilation or decay of a heavier component of DM. Remarkably, boosted DM annihilating into gamma-rays at a specific point in a galaxy could actually have traveled from …
The spectral distribution of electron-positron pair created by photon and the spectral distribution of photons radiated from high-energy electron in an oriented single crystal is calculated using the method which permits inseparable consideration both of the coherent and incoherent mechanisms of two relevant processes. The method includes the action of field of axis (or plane) as well as the multiple scattering of radiating electron or particles of the created pair (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect). The influence of scattering on the coherent mechanism and the influence of field on …

We propose a new candidate of GeV scale inelastic dark matter (DM). Our construction has an anomaly-free $U(1)_X^{}$ gauge group with dark photon mediator, and can realize either scalar or fermionic inelastic DM. It is highly predictive and testable. We study the scattering rate of light inelastic DM with electrons in the XENON1T experiment and with nuclei in the XENON1T, CRESST-III, CDEX-1B and DarkSide-50 experiments. We resolve the recent XENON1T anomaly via electron recoil detection. Combining the XENON1T constraints from both electron recoils and nuclear recoils (including Migdal effect),…
We explore the possibility that the annihilation of dark matter (DM) is boosted due to enhanced substructure in the presence of primordial black holes (PBHs) which constitute a sub-component of DM. The PBHs can generate entropy fluctuations at the small scales which trigger early structure formation, and a large fraction of the whole DM can reside in these collapsed objects that formed at high redshift ($z\gtrsim 100$). Such early forming minihalos consequently possess higher densities than those in the conventional scenarios (without PBHs) and would be more resilient to tidal disruptions. Our…
Dark matter (DM) direct detection experiments have been setting strong limits on the DM-nucleon scattering cross section at the DM mass above a few GeV, but leave large parameter space unexplored in the low mass region. DM is likely to be scattered and boosted by relativistic cosmic rays in the expanding universe if it can generate nuclear recoils in direct detection experiments to offer observable signals. Since low energy threshold detectors using Germanium have provided good constraints on ordinary halo GeV-scale DM, it is necessary to re-analyze 102.8 kg$\times$day data in the CDEX-10 expe…
We present a self-interacting boosted dark matter (DM) scenario as a possible explanation of the recently reported excess of electron recoil events by the XENON1T experiment. The Standard Model (SM) has been extended with two vector-like fermion singlets charged under a dark $U(1)_D$ gauge symmetry to describe the dark sector. While the presence of light vector boson mediator leads to sufficient DM self-interactions to address the small scale issues of cold dark matter, the model with sub-GeV scale DM can explain the XENON1T excess via elastic scattering of boosted DM component with electrons …
Light sub-GeV dark matter (DM) particles in the Milky Way or macroscopic objects such as primordial black holes (PBHs) become attractive DM candidates due to null results of WIMP from direct detection experiments. We explore the possibility in which the present PBHs play as a novel source to produce light boosted DM and confine light PBHs with current and future terrestrial facilities. We study the electron elastic scattering data and obtain the current constraints from Super-Kamiokande and XENON1T on the boosted DM from PBH evaporation. The prospective bounds on the sub-GeV DM-electron scatte…
A feasibility study is presented for the search of the lightest bottom squark (sbottom) in a compressed scenario, where its mass difference from the lightest neutralino is 5 GeV. Two separate studies are performed: $(1)$ final state containing two VBF-like tagging jets, missing transverse energy, and zero or one $b$-tagged jet; and $(2)$ final state consisting of initial state radiation (ISR) jet, missing transverse energy, and at least one $b$-tagged jet. An analysis of the shape of the missing transverse energy distribution for signal and background is performed in each case, leading to sign…
We study the possibility to directly detect the boosted dark matter generated from the scatterings with high energetic cosmic particles such as protons and electrons. As a concrete example, we consider the sub-GeV dark matter mediated by a $U(1)_D$ gauge boson which has mixing with $U(1)_Y$ gauge boson in the standard model. The enhanced kinetic energy of the light dark matter from the collision with the cosmic rays can recoil the target nucleus and electron in the underground direct detection experiments transferring enough energy to them to be detectable. We show the impact of BDM with exist…
