We explore the possibility that the annihilation of dark matter (DM) is boosted due to enhanced substructure in the presence of primordial black holes (PBHs) which constitute a sub-component of DM. The PBHs can generate entropy fluctuations at the small scales which trigger early structure formation, and a large fraction of the whole DM can reside in these collapsed objects that formed at high redshift ($z\gtrsim 100$). Such early forming minihalos consequently possess higher densities than those in the conventional scenarios (without PBHs) and would be more resilient to tidal disruptions. Our scenarios of the annihilation boost due to DM substructures are of particular interest for light ($< 1$ GeV) DM which has been less explored compared to heavier DM in the presence of the PBHs.
Assisted annihilation generates thermal sub-GeV dark matter through a novel annihilation between a pair of dark matter and standard-model-like states, called the "assister". We show that, depending on the mass hierarchy between the assister and dark matter, there can be either a suppression or a boost of the effective cross section. This augmentation enables the possibility of $\mathcal{O}(100)$ MeV scale dark matter with perturbative coupling that saturates the relic density estimates while being relatively insulated from cosmological constraints like big bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic micro…
We study the allowed primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter abundance in the mixed dark matter scenarios consisting of PBHs and self-annihilating weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with a velocity dependent annihilation cross section. We first briefly illustrate how the WIMP dark matter halo profile changes for the velocity suppressed p-wave annihilation scenarios, compared with the familiar s-wave annihilation scenarios, and then discuss the PBH mass dependent upper bound on the allowed PBH dark matter abundance. The WIMPs can accrete onto a PBH to form an ultracompact minihalo wit…
We revisit constraints on small-scale primordial power from annihilation signals from dark matter minihalos. Using gamma rays and neutrinos from extragalactic minihalos and assuming the delta-function primordial spectrum, we show the dependence of the constraints on annihilation modes, the mass of dark matter, and the annihilation cross section. We report both conservative constraints by assuming minihalos are fully destructed when becoming part of halos originating from the standard almost-scale invariant primordial spectrum, and optimistic constraints by neglecting destruction.
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) observation by the Planck satellite precisely determines primordial curvature fluctuations on larger scales than $\mathcal O(1)\,\mathrm{Mpc}$, while the small-scale curvature fluctuation is still less constrained. The constraint on small-scale fluctuations is highly improved if we assume the standard thermal relic dark matter scenario. When small-scale fluctuations are large enough, dense regions collapse to form small halos even in a redshift $z\gtrsim10^3$, which is called ultracompact minihalos. These minihalos enhance the annihilation of the dark matt…
We study the effects of dark-matter annihilation during the epoch of big-bang nucleosynthesis on the primordial abundances of light elements. We improve the calculation of the light-element abundances by taking into account the effects of anti-nucleons emitted by the annihilation of dark matter and the interconversion reactions of neutron and proton at inelastic scatterings of energetic nucleons. Comparing the theoretical prediction of the primordial light-element abundances with the latest observational constraints, we derive upper bounds on the dark-matter pair-annihilation cross section. Im…

In the cold dark matter paradigm, structures form hierarchically, implying that large structures contain smaller substructures. These subhalos will enhance signatures of dark matter annihilation such as gamma rays. In the literature, typical estimates of this boost factor assume a concentration-mass relation for field halos, to calculate the luminosity of subhalos. However, since subhalos accreted in the gravitational potential of their host loose mass through tidal stripping and dynamical friction, they have a quite characteristic density profile, different from that of the field halos of the…
While Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) with masses $M_{\rm PBH} \gtrsim 10^{-11} \, M_\odot$ cannot comprise the entirety of dark matter, the existence of even a small population of these objects can have profound astrophysical consequences. A sub-dominant population of PBHs will efficiently accrete dark matter particles before matter-radiation equality, giving rise to high-density dark matter spikes. We consider here the scenario in which dark matter is comprised primarily of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with a small sub-dominant contribution coming from PBHs, and revisit the con…
Primordial stars formed in the early universe are thought to be hosted by compact dark matter (DM) halos. If DM consists of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), such stars may be powered by DM annihilation during the early phases of their evolutions. We study the pre-main sequence evolutions of the primordial star using a detailed stellar evolution code under the assumption that the annihilation of adiabatically contracted WIMPs DM within the star provides a sufficient energy to sustain the stellar equilibrium. We follow the evolution of accreting stars using several gas mass accretio…
We perform three-dimensional simulations of structure formation in the early Universe, when boosting the primordial power spectrum on approximately kpc scales. We demonstrate that our simulations are capable of producing power-law profiles close to the steep $ρ\propto r^{-9/4}$ halo profiles that are commonly assumed to be a good approximation to ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs). However, we show that for more realistic initial conditions in which halos are neither perfectly symmetric nor isolated, the steep power-law profile is disrupted and we find that the Navarro-Frenk-White profile is a bet…
We present the first 3D simulations to include the effects of dark matter annihilation feedback during the collapse of primordial mini-halos. We begin our simulations from cosmological initial conditions and account for dark matter annihilation in our treatment of the chemical and thermal evolution of the gas. The dark matter is modelled using an analytical density profile that responds to changes in the peak gas density. We find that the gas can collapse to high densities despite the additional energy input from the dark matter. No objects supported purely by dark matter annihilation heating …
We study the effects of WIMP dark matter (DM) annihilations on the thermal and chemical evolution of the gaseous clouds where the first generation of stars in the Universe is formed. We follow the collapse of the gas inside a typical halo virializing at very high redshift, from well before virialization until a stage where the heating from DM annihilations exceeds the gas cooling rate. The DM energy input is estimated by inserting the energy released by DM annihilations (as predicted by an adiabatic contraction of the original DM profile) in a spherically symmetric radiative transfer scheme. I…
The observations and research on the neutrinos provide a kind of indirect way of revealing the properties of dark matter particles. For the detection of muon neutrinos, the main issue is the large atmospheric background, which is caused by the interactions between the cosmic rays and atoms within the atmosphere. Compared with muon neutrinos, tau neutrinos have a smaller atmospheric background especially for the downward-going direction. Except for the classical neutrino sources, dark matter particles can also annihilate into the neutrinos and are the potential high energy astrophysical sources…
Compared with that of standard dark matter halos, the density profile of the recently proposed new kind of dark matter structure named ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs) is steeper and its formation time is earlier. If the dark matter is composed of weakly interactive massive particles (WIMP), the potential signals, e.g. neutrinos, from UCMHs due to the dark matter annihilation would be detected by IceCube/DeepCore or other detectors and such signals would have a very useful complementarity of gamma rays observations. On the other hand, the formation of UCMHs is related to primordial curvature per…

We revisit the constraints on evaporating primordial black holes (PBHs) from the isotropic X-ray and soft gamma-ray background in the mass range $10^{16}-10^{18}$ g. We find that they are stronger than usually inferred due to two neglected effects: i) The contribution of the annihilation radiation due to positrons emitted in the evaporation process. ii) The high-latitude, Galactic contribution to the measured isotropic flux. We study the dependence of the bounds from the datasets used, the positron annihilation conditions, and the inclusion of the astrophysical background. We push the exclusio…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) formed in the early Universe can accret dark matter particles due to gravity and form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs). The theoretical researches and simulations have shown that the density profile of dark matter in UCMHs is in the form of $ρ(r) \sim r^{-2.25}$. Compared with the popular dark matter halo model, e.g. NFW model, dark matter annihilation rate is larger in UCMHs. Considering dark matter annihilation, there is a maximum core density $ρ_{\rm max}$ in UCMHs which has been treated independent on redshift. While in this work, we point out that $ρ_{\rm max}$…
(Abridged) Ultracompact Minihaloes (UCMHs), which formed by dark matter accretion onto primordial black holes (PBHs) or initial dark matter overdensity produced by the primordial density perturbation, provide a new type of compact dark matter structure to ionize and heat the IGM after matter-radiation equality z_eq, which is much earlier than the formation of the first cosmological dark halo structure and later first stars. We show that dark matter annihilation density contributed by UCMHs can totally dominated over the homogenous dark matter annihilation background even for a tiny UCMH abunda…
Combining constraints from microlensing and Lyman-$α$ forest, we provide a simple argument to show that large spatial clustering of stellar-mass primordial black holes at the time of formation, such as the one induced by the presence of large non-Gaussianities, is ruled out. Therefore, it is not possible to evade existing constraints preventing stellar-mass primordial black holes to be a dominant constituent of the dark matter by boosting their initial clustering.
The galactic 511 keV gamma-ray line has been observed since 1970's, and was identified as the result of electron-positron annihilation, but the origin of such positrons is still not clear. Apart from the astrophysical explanations, the possibilities that such positrons come from dark matter (DM) annihilation are also widely studied. Primordial black hole (PBH) is also an extensively studied candidate of DM. If PBHs exist, the DM particles may be gravitationally bound to the PBHs and form halo around PBHs with density spikes. DM annihilation in these density spikes can enhance the production ra…
In the mixed dark matter scenarios consisting of primordial black holes (PBHs) and weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), WIMPs can be accreted onto PBHs to form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs) with a density spike in the early universe. Compared with the classical dark matter halo, UCMHs are formed earlier and have a higher density of center. Since the annihilation rate is proportional to the squared number density of WIMPs, it is expected that WIMPs annihilation within UCMHs is enhanced and has influences on the early universe. Between the time of recombination and matter-radiation equ…
We study the well-motivated mixed dark matter (DM) scenario composed of a dominant thermal WIMP, highlighting the case of $SU(2)_L$ triplet fermion "winos", with a small fraction of primordial black holes (PBHs). After the wino kinetic decoupling, the DM particles are captured by PBHs leading to the presence of PBHs with dark minihalos in the Milky Way today. The strongest constraints for the wino DM come from the production of narrow line gamma rays from wino annihilation in the Galactic Center. We analyse in detail the viability of the mixed wino DM scenario, and determine the constraints on…

Thermal dark matter at the MeV scale faces stringent bounds from a variety of cosmological probes. Here we perform a detailed evaluation of BBN bounds on the annihilation cross section of dark matter with a mass $1\,\text{MeV} \lesssim m_χ\lesssim 1\,\text{GeV}$. For $p-wave suppressed annihilations, constraints from BBN turn out to be significantly stronger than the ones from CMB observations, and are competitive with the strongest bounds from other indirect searches. We furthermore update the lower bound from BBN on the mass of thermal dark matter using improved determinations of primordial …
Primordial black holes (PBHs) accumulate weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) around them and form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs), if the WIMP is a dominant component of the dark matter (DM). In this paper, we discuss that the UCMHs seeded by the PBHs with sub-earth mass enhance the WIMP annihilation in the present Universe and can successfully explain the positron and/or electron excess in cosmic ray observed by PAMELA/Fermi experiments. The signal is very similar to that from a decaying dark matter, which can explain the PAMELA and/or Fermi anomaly without conflict with any constrain…
We derive constraints on mixed dark-matter scenarios consisting of primordial black holes (PBHs) and weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In these scenarios, we expect a density spike of the WIMPs that are gravitationally bound to the PBHs, which results in an enhanced annihilation rate and increased indirect detection prospects. We show that such scenarios provide strong constraints on the allowed fraction of PBHs that constitutes the dark matter, depending on the WIMP mass $m_χ$ and the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section $\langle σv \rangle$. For the standard scenario with…
Ultracompact minihalos have recently been proposed as a new class of dark matter structure. These minihalos would be produced by phase transitions in the early Universe or features in the inflaton potential, and constitute non-baryonic massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) today. We examine the prospect of detecting ultracompact minihalos in gamma-rays if dark matter consists of self-annihilating particles. We compute present-day fluxes from minihalos produced in the electron-positron annihilation epoch, and the QCD and electroweak phase transitions in the early Universe. Even at a distance of…
The dark matter (DM) can consist of the primordial black holes (PBHs) in addition to the conventional weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). The Poisson fluctuations of the PBH number density produce the isocurvature perturbations which can dominate the matter power spectrum at small scales and enhance the early structure formation. We study how the WIMP annihilation from those early formed structures can affect the CMB (in particular the E-mode polarization anisotropies and $y$-type spectral distortions) and global 21cm signals. Our studies would be of particular interest for the light…
We show that highly spinning primordial black holes of mass $M\sim 10^{12}$ kg, potentially born in a matter-dominated era after inflation, can produce clouds of pions in their vicinity via the superradiant instability, with densities up to that of nuclear matter. We discuss the electromagnetic signatures of this process, via neutral pion decay and charged pion annihilation into photons, computing in particular their contribution to the isotropic gamma-ray background. This allows us to place upper bounds on the abundance of such primordial black holes that are comparable to the ones obtained f…
It was proposed that the massive compact halo objects (MCHOs) would be produced during an earlier epoch of cosmology if the density perturbations are between $3 \times 10^{-4}$ and 0.3. Then these objects can accrete dark matter particles onto them due to their high density. If the dark matter is in the form of the weakly interacting massive particles, the MCHOs can have a significant effect on the evolution of cosmology due to the dark matter annihilation within them. Using the WMAP-7 years data, we investigated the constraints on the current abundance of MCHOs ($f_{MCHOs}$) formed during the…
We consider the dark matter (DM) scenarios consisting of the mixture of WIMPs and PBHs and study how much fraction of the total DM can be PBHs. In such scenarios, PBHs can accrete the WIMPs and consequently enhance the heating and ionization in the intergalactic medium due to WIMP annihilations. We demonstrate that the CMB data can give the stringent bounds on the allowed PBH fraction which are comparable or even tighter than those from the gamma ray data depending on the DM masses. For instance, the MCMC likelihood analysis using the Planck CMB data leads to the bound on PBH DM fraction with …
Dark Matter annihilations after recombination and during the epoch of structure formation deposit energy in the primordial intergalactic medium, producing reionization and heating. We investigate the constraints that are imposed by the observed optical depth of the Universe and the measured temperature of the intergalactic gas. We find that the bounds are significant, and have the power to rule out large portions of the `DM mass/cross section' parameter space. The optical depth bound is generally stronger and does not depend significantly on the history of structure formation. The temperature …
The early universe could feature multiple reheating events, leading to jumps in the visible sector entropy density that dilute both particle asymmetries and the number density of frozen-out states. In fact, late time entropy jumps are usually required in models of Affleck-Dine baryogenesis, which typically produces an initial particle-antiparticle asymmetry that is much too large. An important consequence of late time dilution, is that a smaller dark matter annihilation cross section is needed to obtain the observed dark matter relic density. For cosmologies with high scale baryogenesis, follo…
The accumulation of dark matter particles near the primordial black holes starts at the radiation-dominated cosmological stage and produces the central density spikes. The spikes can be the bright gamma-ray sources due to dark matter annihilation. We present the self-consistent derivation of the equation of motion of particle in the metrics of primordial black hole immersed into cosmological background. By numerical solution of this equation we find the central dark matter density profile. The density growth is suppressed in the central part of the profile compared with previous calculations.
We consider the temperature dynamics of hypothetical primordial hot areas in the Universe. Such areas can be produced by the primordial density inhomogeneities and can survive to the modern era, in particular due to primordial black hole (PBH) cluster of size $R \gtrsim 1$ pc and more. Here we concentrate on the neutrino cooling effect which is realized due to reactions of weak $p\leftrightarrow n$ transitions and $e^{\pm}$ annihilation. The given neutrino cooling mechanism is found to work in a wide range of parameters. For those parameters typical for PBH cluster considered, the cooling mech…
Reticulum II (Ret II) is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and presents a prime target to investigate the nature of dark matter (DM) because of its high mass-to-light ratio. We evaluate a dedicated INTEGRAL observation campaign data set to obtain $γ$-ray fluxes from Ret II and compare those with expectations from DM. Ret II is not detected in the $γ$-ray band 25--8000 keV, and we derive a flux limit of $\lesssim 10^{-8}\,\mathrm{erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. The previously reported 511 keV line is not seen, and we find a flux limit of $\lesssim 1.7 \times 10^{-4}\,\mathrm{ph\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. We…
The dark matter enclosed in a density perturbation with a large initial amplitude (delta-rho/rho > 1e-3) collapses shortly after recombination and forms an ultracompact minihalo (UCMH). Their high central densities make UCMHs especially suitable for detection via astrometric microlensing: as the UCMH moves, it changes the apparent position of background stars. A UCMH with a mass larger than a few solar masses can produce a distinctive astrometric microlensing signal that is detectable by the space astrometry mission Gaia. If Gaia does not detect gravitational lensing by any UCMHs, then it esta…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are expected to accrete particle dark matter around them to form ultracompact minihalos (UCMHs), if the PBHs themselves are not most of the dark matter. We show that if most dark matter is a thermal relic, then the inner regions of UCMHs around PBHs are highly luminous sources of annihilation products. Flux constraints on gamma rays and neutrinos set strong abundance limits, improving previous limits by orders of magnitude. Assuming enough particle dark matter exists to form UCMHs, we find that Omega_PBH <~ 10^-4 (for m_DM c^2 ~ 100 GeV) for a vast range in PBH ma…
It has recently been argued that the PAMELA, ATIC and PPB-BETS data showing an anomalous excess of high-energy cosmic ray positrons and electrons might be explained by dark matter annihilating in the Galactic halo with a cross section resonantly enhanced compared to its value in the primeval plasma. We find that with a very large annihilation cross section the flash of energetic photons and electron-positron pairs expected from dark-matter annihilation in the first protohalos that form at redshift z~40 is likely substantial and observable. As a consequence, bounds on the allowed energy injecti…
Ultracompact minihalos~(UCMHs) can form after the epoch of matter-radiation equality, if the density fluctuations of dark matter have significantly large amplitude on small scales. The constraint on the UCMH abundance allows us to access such small-scale fluctuations. In this paper, we present that, through the measurement of 21-cm fluctuations before the epoch of reionization~ we can obtain a constraint on the UCMH abundance. We calculate the 21-cm signal from UCMHs and show that UCMHs provide the enhancement of the 21-cm fluctuations. We also investigate the constraint on the UCMH abundance …
Assuming the existence of a primordial asymmetry in the dark sector, a scenario usually dubbed Asymmetric Dark Matter (aDM), we study the effect of oscillations between dark matter and its antiparticle on the re-equilibration of the initial asymmetry before freeze-out, which enable efficient annihilations to recouple. We calculate the evolution of the DM relic abundance and show how oscillations re-open the parameter space of aDM models, in particular in the direction of allowing large (WIMP-scale) DM masses. A typical wimp with a mass at the EW scale (\sim 100 GeV - 1 TeV) presenting a primor…
We report a novel prediction from single-field inflation that even a tiny step in the inflaton potential can change our perception of primordial non-Gaussianities of the curvature perturbation. Our analysis focuses on the tail of probability distribution generated by an upward step transition between two stages of slow-roll evolution. The nontrivial background dynamics with off-attractor behavior is identified. By using a non-perturbative $δN$ analysis, we explicitly show that a highly non-Gaussian tail can be generated by a tiny upward step, even when the conventional nonlinearity parameters …
