Recent theoretical studies have suggested that the suddenly recoiled atom struck by dark matter (DM) particle is much more likely to excite or lose its electrons than expected. Such Migdal effect provides a new avenue for exploring the sub-GeV DM particles. There have been various attempts to describe the Migdal effect in liquids and semiconductor targets. In this paper we incorporate the treatment of the bremsstrahlung process and the electronic many-body effects to give a full description of the Migdal effect in bulk semiconductor targets diamond and silicon. Compared with the results obtained with the atom-centered localized Wannier functions (WFs) under the framework of the tight-binding (TB) approximation, the method proposed in this study yields much larger event rates in the low energy regime, due to a $ω^{-4}$ scaling. We also find that the effect of the bremsstrahlung photon mediating the Coulomb interaction between recoiled ion and the electron-hole pair is equivalent to that of the exchange of a single phonon.
The soft behavior of the bremsstrahlung from a source is discussed in terms of classical transport models and within a non--equilibrium quantum field theory (Schwinger - Kadanoff - Baym - Keldysh) formulation.
We analyze within the light-cone path integral approach [4] the recent CERN SPS data [19] on the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for photon bremsstrahlung in quantum regime from 149, 207, and 287 GeV electrons. Calculations have been carried out treating accurately the Coulomb effects and including the inelastic processes. Comparison with experiment is performed accounting for multi-photon emission. Our results are in good agreement with the data.
The recent data of the SLAC E-146 collaboration on the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for bremsstrahlung from 8 and 25 GeV electrons are analyzed within a rigorous light-cone path integral approach. Numerical calculations have been carried out treating rigorously the Coulomb effects and including the inelastic processes. Comparison with the experimental data is performed taking into account multi-photon emission and photon absorption. For most of the targets the theoretical predictions are in excellent agreement with the experimental data.
High-energy Coulomb corrections (CCs) to some quantities of the quantum Migdal theory of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect are obtained analytically and numerically for the regimes of small and strong LPM suppression on the basis of a refined Moliere multiple scattering theory. Numerical calculations are presented in the ranges of the nuclear charge number Z of a scatterer from 6 to 92 and the expansion parameter B of Moliere from 4.5 to 8.5. It is shown that the relative CC to the spectral bremsstrahlung rate can reach a value of the order of -19% in the ranges considered and must be…
Dark matter direct detection experiments have limited sensitivity to light dark matter (below a few GeV), due to the challenges of lowering energy thresholds for the detection of nuclear recoil to below $\mathcal{O}(\mathrm{keV})$. While impressive progress has been made on this front, light dark matter remains the least constrained region of dark-matter parameter space. It has been shown that both ionization and excitation due to the Migdal effect and coherently-emitted photon bremsstrahlung from the recoiling atom can provide observable channels for light dark matter that would otherwise hav…
The search for dark matter weakly interacting massive particles with noble liquids has probed masses down and below a GeV/c^2. The ultimate limit is represented by the experimental threshold on the energy transfer to the nuclear recoil. Currently, the experimental sensitivity has reached a threshold equivalent to a few ionization electrons. In these conditions, the contribution of a Bremsstrahlung photon or a so-called Migdal electron due to the sudden acceleration of a nucleus after a collision might be sizable. In the present work, we use a Bayesian approach to study how these effects can be…
Some considerations about the importance of coherence effects for bremsstrahlung processes in non--equilibrium dense matter (Landau - Pomeranchuk - Migdal - effect) are presented. They are of particular relevance for the application to photon - and di-lepton production from high energy nuclear collisions, to gluon radiation in QCD transport, or parton kinetics and to neutrino and axion radiation from supernova explosion and from hot neutron stars. The soft behavior of the bremsstrahlung from a source described by classical transport models is discussed and pocket correction formulas for the in…
The basic expressions for the differential nuclear bremsstrahlung cross section at high electron energy, as derived under different theoretical approaches and approximations to quantum coherence effects, are compared. The Baier-Katkov treatment is reformulated to allow introduction of the same value of the radiation length in all calculations. A dedicated Monte Carlo code is employed for obtaining photon energy spectra in the framework of the Baier-Katkov approach taking into account multiphoton emission, attenuation by pair production, and pile-up with photons from the background. The results…
The Landau, Pomeranchuk, Migdal (LPM) effect (suppression of the bremsstrahlung from high energy electron due to a multiple scattering of an emitting electron in dense media) is considered for the case when thickness of a target is of the order or less than the formation length of radiation. The effects of the polarization of a medium and transition radiation are taken into account as well. Qualitative picture of the phenomenon is discussed in detail. Comparison with recent experimental data is carried out.
The bremsstrahlung of an electron and $e^{-}e^{+}$-pair creation by a photon in a medium is considered in high-energy region, where influence of the multiple scattering on the processes (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect) becomes essential. The integral characteristics: the radiation length and the total probability of radiation and pair photoproduction are analyzed under influence of the LPM effect.

The cross section of bremsstrahlung from high-energy electron suppressed due to the multiple scattering of an emitting electron in a dense media (the LPM effect) is discussed. Development of the LPM effect theory is outlined. For the target of finite thickness one has to include boundary photon radiation as well as the interference effects. The importance of multiphoton effects is emphasized. Comparison of theory with SLAC data is presented.
In this paper, we present a re-analysis of SuperCDMS data using a profile likelihood approach to search for sub-GeV dark matter particles (DM) through two inelastic scattering channels: bremsstrahlung radiation and the Migdal effect. By considering possible inelastic scattering channels, experimental sensitivity can be extended to DM masses that would otherwise be undetectable through the DM-nucleon elastic scattering channel, given the energy threshold of current experiments. We exclude DM masses down to $220~\textrm{MeV}/c^2$ at $2.7 \times 10^{-30}~\textrm{cm}^2$ via the bremsstrahlung chan…
The radiation from high-energy electrons is investigated for the case when a target consists of several separated plates. The spectrum of radiation is considered in the region in which the bremsstrahlung is under influence of the multiple scattering of a projectile (the LPM effect), the polarization of a medium and the hard part of the boundary radiation contribute. In this region the general expression for the radiation spectrum is obtained for the $N$-plate target. A qualitative description of the arising interference pattern is given.
The creation of electron-positron pair by a photon and the bremsstrahlung of an electron in a medium are considered in high-energy region, where influence of the multiple scattering on the processes (the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect) becomes essential. The pair photoproduction probability is calculated with an accuracy up to the "next to leading logarithm". The integral characteristics: the radiation length and the total probability of pair photoproduction are analyzed under influence of the LPM effect, and the asymptotic expansions of these characteristics are derived.
A rigorous evaluation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect for finite-size targets is performed within the path integral approach previously developed in ref. [4]. The bremsstrahlung rate in QED is expressed through a solution of a two-dimensional Schrödinger equation with an imaginary potential. The boundary condition for this solution is formulated in terms of a product of the light-cone electron--photon wave function and the dipole cross section for scattering of $e^{+}e^{-}$ pair off an atom. Numerical calculations are performed for homogeneous and structured targets. Our predictions fo…
Bremsstrahlung of photons from highly relativistic electrons is investigated. The cross section of the processes, which is suppressed due to a multiple scattering of an emitting electron in dense media (LPM effect) and due to photon interaction with electrons of a medium, is calculated with an accuracy up to "next to leading logarithm" and with the Coulomb corrections taken into account. Making allowances for a multiple scattering and a polarization of a medium an analysis of radiation on a target boundary is carried out. The method of consideration of radiation in a thin target under influenc…
Recent studies have theoretically investigated the atomic excitation and ionization induced by the dark matter (DM)-nucleus scattering, and it is found that the suddenly recoiled atom is much more likely to excite or lose its electrons than expected. Such phenomenon is called the "Migdal effect". In this paper, we extend the established strategy to describe the Migdal effect in isolated atoms to the case in semiconductors under the framework of tight-binding (TB) approximation. Since the localized aspects of electrons are respected in form of the Wannier functions (WFs), the extension of the e…
The splitting processes of bremsstrahlung and pair production in a medium are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, which leads to a suppression known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. In this paper, we continue study of the case when the coherence lengths of two consecutive splitting processes overlap (which is important for understanding corrections to standard treatments of the LPM effect in QCD), avoiding soft-gluon approximations. In particular, this paper completes the calculation of the rate for real double gluon bremsstrahlung from an initial gluon w…
Gluon bremsstrahlung induced by multiple parton scattering in a finite dense medium has a unique angular distribution with respect to the initial parton direction. A dead-cone structure with an opening angle $θ^2_0 \approx 2(1-z)/(zLE)$ for gluons with fractional energy $z$ arises from the Landau-Pomeranchuck-Migdal (LPM) interference. In a medium where the gluon's dielectric constant is $ε>1$, the LPM interference pattern is shown to become Cherenkov-like with an increased opening angle determined by the dielectric constant $\cos^2θ_c=z+(1-z)/ε$. For a large dielectric constant $ε\gg 1+2/z^2L…
Consider the in-medium splitting $g \to gg$ of a very high-energy gluon traversing a QCD medium, accounting for the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. It has been known for some time that soft radiative corrections to that splitting generate a double-log correction to the splitting rate, whose effects can be absorbed into running of the medium parameter $\hat q$ describing the rate of transverse momentum kicks to high-energy particles due to small-angle scattering from the medium. Less has been known about sub-leading, single logarithms in this context. In this paper, we find analytic for…
In recent studies, the production rate of photons or lepton pairs by a quark gluon plasma has been found to be enhanced due to collinear singularities. This enhancement pattern is very dependent on rather strict collinearity conditions between the photon and the quark momenta. It was estimated by neglecting the collisional width of quasi-particles. In this paper, we study the modifications of this collinear enhancement when we take into account the possibility for the quarks to have a finite mean free path. Assuming a mean free path of order $(g^2T\ln(1/g))^{-1}$, we find that only low invaria…
The splitting processes of bremsstrahlung and pair production in a medium are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, which leads to a suppression known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. We continue study of the case when the coherence lengths (formation lengths) of two consecutive splitting processes overlap, avoiding soft-emission approximations. Previous work made a ``nearly-complete'' calculation of the effect of overlapping formation times on gluonic splittings such as $g \to gg \to ggg$ (with simplifying assumptions such as an infinite QCD medium and the…
The splitting processes of bremsstrahlung and pair production in a medium are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, which leads to a suppression known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. Of recent interest is the case when the coherence lengths of two consecutive splitting processes overlap (which is important for understanding corrections to standard treatments of the LPM effect in QCD). In previous papers, we have developed methods for computing such corrections without making soft-gluon approximations. However, our methods require consistent treatment of ca…
The density of gluons produced in the central rapidity region of a heavy ion collision is poorly known. We investigate the influence of the effects of quantum coherence on the transverse momentum distribution of photons and gluons radiated by a quark propagating through nuclear matter. We describe the case that the radiation time substantially exceeds the nuclear radius (the relevant case for RHIC and LHC energies), which is different from what is known as Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect corresponding to an infinite medium. We find suppression of the radiation spectrum at small transverse pho…
The observation of earth skimming neutrinos has been proposed as a rather sensitive method to detect ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic neutrinos. Energetic cosmic neutrinos can interact inside the rock and produce leptons via a charged current interaction. In the case of an incoming electron neutrino undergoing a charged current interaction, the produced UHE electron will induce an underground electromagnetic shower. At high energy (above 7.7 TeV in standard rock), such showers are subject to LPM (Landau, Pomeranchuk and Migdal) suppression of the radiative processes cross sections (bremsstrahlun…
The splitting processes of bremsstrahlung and pair production in a medium are coherent over large distances in the very high energy limit, which leads to a suppression known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. We analyze the case when the coherence lengths of two consecutive splitting processes overlap, which is important for understanding corrections to standard treatments of the LPM effect in QCD. Previous authors have analyzed this problem in the case of overlapping double bremsstrahlung where at least one of the bremsstrahlung gluons is soft. Here we show how to generalize to in…

Effect of radiation of many photons by a single electron traversing a target is discussed. When the summary energy of emitted photons (the energy losses spectrum) is measured only, the photon spectrum is distorted comparing with the photon spectrum in one interaction. Influence of this effect is discussed for the cases (1) bremsstrahlung (described by Bethe-Heitler formula), (2) the strong Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect and (3) transition radiation. Qualitative picture of the phenomenon is discussed in detail. Comparison with the recent SLAC experiment in relatively thick target (2.7% of the…
The features of electromagnetic processes are considered which connected with finite size of space region in which final particles (photon, electron-positron pair) are formed. The longitudinal dimension of the region is known as the formation length. If some external agent is acting on an electron while traveling this distance the emission process can be disrupted. There are different agents: multiple scattering of projectile, polarization of a medium, action of external fields, etc. The theory of radiation under influence of the multiple scattering, the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect,…
At very high energies, the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect reduces the cross sections for electron bremsstrahlung and photon $e^+e^-$ pair production. The fractional electron energy loss and pair production cross sections drop as the energy increases. In contrast, the cross sections for photonuclear interactions grow with energy. In solids and liquids, at energies above $10^{20}$ eV, photonuclear reactions dominate, and showers that originate as photons or electrons quickly become hadronic showers. These electron-initiated hadronic showers are much shorter (due to the absence of the LPM effec…
