We define and study proper permutations. Properness is a geometrically natural necessary criterion for a Schubert variety to be Levi-spherical. We prove the probability that a random permutation is proper goes to zero in the limit.
Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $ u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.
We say that two permutations $π$ and $ρ$ have separated descents at position $k$ if $π$ has no descents before position $k$ and $ρ$ has no descents after position $k$. We give a counting formula, in terms of reduced word tableaux, for computing the structure constants of products of Schubert polynomials indexed by permutations with separated descents, and recognize that these structure constants are certain Edelman-Greene coefficients. Our approach uses generalizations of Schützenberger's jeu de taquin algorithm and the Edelman-Greene correspondence via bumpless pipe dreams.
We prove that an inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of permutations that avoid the patterns 1432 and 1423 is nonnegative. Our theorem implies a partial affirmative answer to a recent conjecture of Yibo Gao about principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. We propose a general framework for finding inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of all permutations.
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. (Otherwise nothing happens.) In the case that $y_i=0$ for all $i$, the stationary distributi…
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The \emph{inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process} (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. We define and study odd analogues of classical geometric and combinatorial objects associated to permutations, namely odd Schubert varieties, odd diagrams, and odd inversion sets. We show that there is a bijection between odd inversion sets of permutations and acyclic orientations of the Turán graph, that the dimension of the odd Schubert variety associated to a permutation is the odd length of the permutation, and give several necessary conditions for a subset of $[n] \times [n]$ to be the odd diagram of a permutation. We also study the sign-twisted generating function of the odd length over …
Kohnert proposed the first monomial positive formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for certain unit cell diagrams obtained from the Rothe diagram of a permutation. Billey, Jockusch and Stanley gave the first proven formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for compatible sequences of reduced words of a permutation. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between these two models, thereby definitively proving Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials.
We study the Steinberg variety associated to matrix Schubert varieties, and develop a Robinson-Schensted type correspondence, $τ\leftrightarrow(Λ,\mathsf Q,\mathsf P)$. Here $τ$ is a partial permutation of size $p\times q$, $Λ$ an admissible signed Young diagram of size $p+q$, and $\mathsf P$ (resp. $\mathsf Q$) a standard Young tableau of size $p$ (resp. $q$) whose shape is determined by $Λ$. By embedding the matrix Schubert variety into a Schubert variety, we find a close relationship between the combinatorics of the classical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and our bijection. We als…
We show that for any permutation $w$ that avoids a certain set of 13 patterns of lengths 5 and 6, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$ can be expressed as the determinant of a matrix of elementary symmetric polynomials in a manner similar to the Jacobi-Trudi identity. For such $w$, this determinantal formula is equivalent to a (signed) subtraction-free expansion of $\mathfrak S_w$ in the basis of standard elementary monomials.
A normal variety $X$ is called $H$-spherical for the action of the complex reductive group $H$ if it contains a dense orbit of some Borel subgroup of $H$. We resolve a conjecture of Hodges--Yong by showing that their spherical permutations are characterized by permutation pattern avoidance. Together with results of Gao--Hodges--Yong this implies that the sphericality of a Schubert variety $X_w$ with respect to the largest possible Levi subgroup is characterized by this same pattern avoidance condition.
We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of cert…
We give an explicit formula for the degree of the Grothendieck polynomial of a Grassmannian permutation and a closely related formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Schubert determinantal ideal of a Grassmannian permutation. We then provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri on a formula for regularities of standard open patches of particular Grassmannian Schubert varieties and show that our work gives rise to an alternate explicit formula in these cases. We end with a new conjecture on the regularities of standard open patches of arbitrary Gr…
A permutation is called smooth if the corresponding Schubert variety is smooth. Gilboa and Lapid prove that in the symmetric group, multiplying the reflections below a smooth element $w$ in Bruhat order in a compatible order yields back the element $w$. We strengthen this result by showing that such a product in fact determines a saturated chain $e \to w$ in Bruhat order, and that this property characterizes smooth elements.
