We obtain new connections between permutation patterns and singularities of Schubert varieties, by giving a new characterization of Gorenstein varieties in terms of so called bivincular patterns. These are generalizations of classical patterns where conditions are placed on the location of an occurrence in a permutation, as well as on the values in the occurrence. This clarifies what happens when the requirement of smoothness is weakened to factoriality and further to Gorensteinness, extending work of Bousquet-Melou and Butler (2007), and Woo and Yong (2006). We also show how mesh patterns, introduced by Branden and Claesson (2011), subsume many other types of patterns and define an extension of them called marked mesh patterns. We use these new patterns to further simplify the description of Gorenstein Schubert varieties and give a new description of Schubert varieties that are defined by inclusions, introduced by Gasharov and Reiner (2002). We also give a description of 123-hexagon avoiding permutations, introduced by Billey and Warrington (2001), Dumont permutations and cycles in terms of marked mesh patterns.
We define and study proper permutations. Properness is a geometrically natural necessary criterion for a Schubert variety to be Levi-spherical. We prove the probability that a random permutation is proper goes to zero in the limit.
Kohnert proposed the first monomial positive formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for certain unit cell diagrams obtained from the Rothe diagram of a permutation. Billey, Jockusch and Stanley gave the first proven formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for compatible sequences of reduced words of a permutation. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between these two models, thereby definitively proving Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials.
We study the Steinberg variety associated to matrix Schubert varieties, and develop a Robinson-Schensted type correspondence, $τ\leftrightarrow(Λ,\mathsf Q,\mathsf P)$. Here $τ$ is a partial permutation of size $p\times q$, $Λ$ an admissible signed Young diagram of size $p+q$, and $\mathsf P$ (resp. $\mathsf Q$) a standard Young tableau of size $p$ (resp. $q$) whose shape is determined by $Λ$. By embedding the matrix Schubert variety into a Schubert variety, we find a close relationship between the combinatorics of the classical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and our bijection. We als…
Denote by $u(n)$ the largest principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial: $ u(n) := \max_{w \in S_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1) $ Stanley conjectured in [arXiv:1704.00851] that there is a limit $\lim_{n\to \infty} \, \frac{1}{n^2} \log u(n), $ and asked for a limiting description of permutations achieving the maximum $u(n)$. Merzon and Smirnov conjectured in [arXiv:1410.6857] that this maximum is achieved on layered permutations. We resolve both Stanley's problems restricted to layered permutations.
We say that two permutations $π$ and $ρ$ have separated descents at position $k$ if $π$ has no descents before position $k$ and $ρ$ has no descents after position $k$. We give a counting formula, in terms of reduced word tableaux, for computing the structure constants of products of Schubert polynomials indexed by permutations with separated descents, and recognize that these structure constants are certain Edelman-Greene coefficients. Our approach uses generalizations of Schützenberger's jeu de taquin algorithm and the Edelman-Greene correspondence via bumpless pipe dreams.
We prove that an inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of permutations that avoid the patterns 1432 and 1423 is nonnegative. Our theorem implies a partial affirmative answer to a recent conjecture of Yibo Gao about principal specializations of Schubert polynomials. We propose a general framework for finding inclusion-exclusion inspired expression of Schubert polynomials of all permutations.
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. (Otherwise nothing happens.) In the case that $y_i=0$ for all $i$, the stationary distributi…
A normal variety $X$ is called $H$-spherical for the action of the complex reductive group $H$ if it contains a dense orbit of some Borel subgroup of $H$. We resolve a conjecture of Hodges--Yong by showing that their spherical permutations are characterized by permutation pattern avoidance. Together with results of Gao--Hodges--Yong this implies that the sphericality of a Schubert variety $X_w$ with respect to the largest possible Levi subgroup is characterized by this same pattern avoidance condition.
Consider a lattice of n sites arranged around a ring, with the $n$ sites occupied by particles of weights $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$; the possible arrangements of particles in sites thus corresponds to the $n!$ permutations in $S_n$. The \emph{inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process} (or TASEP) is a Markov chain on the set of permutations, in which two adjacent particles of weights $i<j$ swap places at rate $x_i - y_{n+1-j}$ if the particle of weight $j$ is to the right of the particle of weight $i$. Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse's double Schubert polynomials represent the equivariant cohomology classes of Schubert varieties in the type C flag varieties. The goal of this paper is to obtain a new tableau formula of these polynomials associated to vexillary signed permutations introduced by Anderson-Fulton. To achieve that goal, we introduce flagged factorial (Schur) $Q$-functions, combinatorially defined in terms of (flagged) marked shifted tableaux for flagged strict partitions, and prove their Schur-Pfaffian formula. As an application, we also obtain a new combinatorial formula of factorial $Q$-f…
We define and study odd analogues of classical geometric and combinatorial objects associated to permutations, namely odd Schubert varieties, odd diagrams, and odd inversion sets. We show that there is a bijection between odd inversion sets of permutations and acyclic orientations of the Turán graph, that the dimension of the odd Schubert variety associated to a permutation is the odd length of the permutation, and give several necessary conditions for a subset of $[n] \times [n]$ to be the odd diagram of a permutation. We also study the sign-twisted generating function of the odd length over …
We show that the principal specialization of the Schubert polynomial at $w$ is bounded below by $1+p_{132}(w)+p_{1432}(w)$ where $p_u(w)$ is the number of occurrences of the pattern $u$ in $w$, strengthening a previous result by A. Weigandt. We then make a conjecture relating the principal specialization of Schubert polynomials to pattern containment. Finally, we characterize permutations $w$ whose RC-graphs are connected by simple ladder moves via pattern avoidance.
We show that for any permutation $w$ that avoids a certain set of 13 patterns of lengths 5 and 6, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak S_w$ can be expressed as the determinant of a matrix of elementary symmetric polynomials in a manner similar to the Jacobi-Trudi identity. For such $w$, this determinantal formula is equivalent to a (signed) subtraction-free expansion of $\mathfrak S_w$ in the basis of standard elementary monomials.
Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumfor…
Knutson and Miller (2005) established a connection between the anti-diagonal Gröbner degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties and the pre-existing combinatorics of pipe dreams. They used this correspondence to give a geometrically-natural explanation for the appearance of the combinatorially-defined Schubert polynomials as representatives of Schubert classes. Recently, Hamaker, Pechenik, and Weigandt (2022) proposed a similar connection between diagonal degenerations of matrix Schubert varieties and bumpless pipe dreams, newer combinatorial objects introduced by Lam, Lee, and Shimozono (2021…
We give degree formulas for Grothendieck polynomials indexed by vexillary permutations and $1432$-avoiding permutations via tableau combinatorics. These formulas generalize a formula for degrees of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials which appeared in previous joint work of the authors with Y. Ren and A. St. Dizier. We apply our formulas to compute Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of classes of generalized determinantal ideals. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the regularities of all one-sided mixed ladder determinantal ideals. We also derive formulas for the regularities of cert…
We study Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside flag varieties. We consider toric degenerations of flag varieties induced by matching fields and semi-standard Young tableaux. We describe an analogue of matching field ideals for Schubert varieties inside the flag variety and give a complete characterization of toric ideals among them. We use a combinatorial approach to standard monomial theory to show that block diagonal matching fields give rise to toric degenerations. Our methods and results use the combinatorics of permutations associated to Schubert varieties, matching fields an…
Classification of Ding's Schubert varieties: finer rook equivalence
We give an explicit formula for the degree of the Grothendieck polynomial of a Grassmannian permutation and a closely related formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Schubert determinantal ideal of a Grassmannian permutation. We then provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri on a formula for regularities of standard open patches of particular Grassmannian Schubert varieties and show that our work gives rise to an alternate explicit formula in these cases. We end with a new conjecture on the regularities of standard open patches of arbitrary Gr…

We prove that if $σ\in S_m$ is a pattern of $w \in S_n$, then we can express the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ as a monomial times $\mathfrak{S}_σ$ (in reindexed variables) plus a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. This implies that the set of permutations whose Schubert polynomials have all their coefficients equal to either 0 or 1 is closed under pattern containment. Using Magyar's orthodontia, we characterize this class by a list of twelve avoided patterns. We also give other equivalent conditions on $\mathfrak{S}_w$ being zero-one. In this case, the Schubert polynomial $\math…
For a given permutation $π\in S_N$, Fulton proves that the matrix Schubert variety $\overline{X_π} \cong Y_π \times \mathbb{C}^q$ can be defined via certain rank conditions encoded in the Rothe diagram of $π$. In the case where $Y_π:=\text{TV}(σ_π)$ is toric (with respect to a $(\mathbb{C}^*)^{2N-1}$ action), we show that it can be described as an edge ideal of a bipartite graph $G^π$. We characterize the lower dimensional faces of the associated so-called edge cone $σ_π$ explicitly in terms of subgraphs of $G^π$ and present a combinatorial study for the first order deformations of $Y_π$. We p…
