The stability of a high-symmetry $P4mm$ polar phase in seventeen short-period ferroelectric perovskite superlattices with polar discontinuity is studied from first principles within the density-functional theory. It is shown that in most superlattices this phase exhibits either the ferroelectric instability or the antiferrodistortive one, or both of them. For each superlattice, the ground-state structure, the structure of possible metastable phases, the spontaneous polarization, and piezoelectric properties are calculated. The properties of superlattices with the polar discontinuity are compared with those of superlattices with broken symmetry and of ordinary superlattices, which have no the polar discontinuity. It is shown that high piezoelectric coefficients (up to 150--270 pC/N) in some superlattices with the polar discontinuity are due to the appearance of strong lattice distortions, whose symmetry follows that of a low-lying polar phonon mode of the ground-state structure, under the influence of external strain.
Tetragonal ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3/PbTiO3 superlattice under uniaxial tensile stress along the c axis is investigated from first principles. We show that the calculated ideal tensile strength is 6.85 GPa and that the superlattice under the loading of uniaxial tensile stress becomes soft along the nonpolar axes. We also find that the appropriately applied uniaxial tensile stress can significantly enhance the piezoelectricity for the superlattice, with piezoelectric coefficient d33 increasing from the ground state value by a factor of about 8, reaching 678.42 pC/N. The underlying mech…
Based on the locality principle of insulating superlattices, we apply the method of Wu {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Letter {\bf 101}, 087610 (2008)] to the piezoelectric strains of individual layers under fixed displacement field. For a superlattice of arbitrary stacking sequence an accurate model is acquired for predicting piezoelectricity. By applying the model in the superlattices where ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive modes are in competition, functional piezoelectricity can be achieved. A strong nonlinear effect is observed and can be further engineered in the PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlat…
The origin of the functional properties of complex oxide superlattices can be resolved using time-resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction into contributions from the component layers making up the repeating unit. The CaTiO3 layers of a CaTiO3/BaTiO3 superlattice have a piezoelectric response to an applied electric field, consistent with a large continuous polarization throughout the superlattice. The overall piezoelectric coefficient at large strains, 54 pm/V, agrees with first-principles predictions in which a tetragonal symmetry is imposed on the superlattice by the SrTiO3 substrate.
The stability of high-symmetry $P4mm$ polar phase in eleven ferroelectric perovskite superlattices with the polar discontinuity is studied from first principles. In most superlattices, this phase exhibits either the ferroelectric or the antiferrodistortive instability, or both of them. The structure of the ground state and, for a number of systems, also of metastable phases in these superlattices is found. The spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of superlattices are calculated. The appearance of high piezoelectric coefficients (up to 150-270 pC/N) in some superlattices is ass…
Using first-principles density functional theory, we study piezoelectricity in short-period superlattices made with combination of ferroelectric and paraelectric components and exhibiting polar discontinuities. We show that piezoelectric response of such a superlattice can be tuned both in terms of sign and magnitude with a choice of its components. As these superlattices with nonswitchable polarization do not undergo ferroelectric transitions, we predict them to exhibit a robust piezoelectric response with weaker temperature dependence compared to their bulk counterparts.
Short period ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO)/PbTiO3 (PTO) superlattices are studied using density functional theory. Contrary to the trends in paraelectric/ferroelectric superlattices the polarization remains nearly constant for PTO concentrations below 50%. In addition, a significant decrease in the c/a ratio below the PTO values were observed. Using a superlattice effective Hamiltonian we predict an enhancement in the d33 piezoelectric coefficient peaking at ~75% PTO concentration due to the different polarization-strain coupling in PTO and BTO layers. Further analysis reveals that …
In the first-principles bulk-layer model the superlattice structure and polarization are determined by first-principles computation of the bulk responses of the constituents to the electrical and mechanical boundary conditions in an insulating superlattice. In this work the model is extended to predict functional properties, specifically dielectric permittivity and piezoelectric response. A detailed comparison between the bulk-layer model and full first-principles calculations for three sets of perovskite oxide superlattices, PbTiO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$, is…
The effect of epitaxial strain on the phonon spectra, crystal structure, spontaneous polarization, dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic properties of (001)-oriented ferroelectric (BaTiO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices ($m = n = {}$1-4) was studied using the first-principles density-functional theory. The ground state of free-standing superlattices is the monoclinic $Cm$ polar phase. Under the in-plane biaxial compressive strain, it transforms to tetragonal $P4mm$ polar phase, and under the in-plane biaxial tensile strain, it transforms to orthorhombic $Amm2$ polar phase. When changing…
The spectral evolution from periodic structure to random structure has always been an interesting topic in solid state physics, the generalized n-component Fibonacci sequences (n- CF) provide a convenient tool to investigate such process since its randomness can be controlled via the parameter n. In this letter, the band-gap structures of n-CF piezoelectric superlattices have been calculated using the transfer-matrix-method, the self-similarity behavior and recovery rule have been systematically analyzed. Consistent with the rigorous mathematical proof by Hu et al.[A. Hu et al. Phys. Rev. B. 4…
A key property that drives research in ferroelectric perovskite oxides is their strong piezoelectric response in which an electric field is induced by an applied strain, and vice-versa for the converse piezoelectric effect. We have achieved an experimental enhancement of the piezoelectric response and dielectric tunability in artificially layered epitaxial PbTiO$_{3}$/CaTiO$_{3}$ superlattices through an engineered rotation of the polarization direction. As the relative layer thicknesses within the superlattice were changed from sample to sample we found evidence for polarization rotation in m…
We have conducted a detailed microscopic investigation of [LaNiO3(1 u.c.)/LaAlO3(1 u.c.)]N superlattices grown on (001) SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 to explore the influence of polar mismatch on the resulting electronic and structural properties. Our data demonstrate that the initial growth on the non-polar SrTiO3 surface leads to a rough morphology and unusual 2+ valence of Ni in the first LaNiO3 layer, which is not observed after growth on the polar surface of LaAlO3. A newly devised model suggests that the polar mismatch can be resolved if the perovskite layers grow with an excess of LaO, which also a…
We show that mismatch of the piezoelectric parameters between layers of multiple-quantum well structures leads to modification of the electron-phonon interaction. In particular, short-wavelength phonons propagating perpendicular to the layers with wavevector close to $2πn/d$, where $d$ is the period of the structure, induce a strong smoothly-varying component of the piezo-potential. As a result, they interact efficiently with 2D electrons. It is shown, that this property leads to emission of collimated quasi-monochromatic beams of high-frequency acoustic phonons from hot electrons in multiple-…
TEM has shown that the strongly piezoelectric material Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 separates into two phases at low temperatures. The majority phase is the monoclinic phase previously found by x-ray diffraction. The minority phase, with a nanoscale coherence length, is a slightly distorted variant of the first resulting from the anti-phase rotation of the oxygen octahedra about [111]. This work clears up a recent controversy about the origin of superlattice peaks in these materials, and supports recent theoretical results predicting the coexistence of ferroelectric and rotational instabilities.
Magnetoelectric coupling terms are derived in piezoelectric/magnetostrictive (multiferroic) thin film heterostructures using Landau-Ginzburg free energy expansions in terms of strain and by considering strain boundary conditions between the two materials. Then, a general effective medium method for solving for the complete electromagnetic susceptibility tensor of such heterostructures is used to calculate the ferromagnetic resonance frequency in a BaTiO$_3$/NiFe$_2$O$_4$ superlattice. This method differs from existing methods for treating magnetoelectric heterostructures since the magnetic and…
Artificial PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices were constructed using off-axis RF magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction and piezoelectric atomic force microscopy were used to study the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization as the ratio of PbTiO$_{3}$ to SrTiO$_{3}$ was changed. For PbTiO$_{3}$ layer thicknesses larger than the 3-unit cells SrTiO$_{3}$ thickness used in the structure, the polarization is found to be reduced as the PbTiO$_{3}$ thickness is decreased. This observation confirms the primary role of the depolarization field in the polarization reduction in thin films. For …
We identify a first-order, isosymmetric transition between a ferrielectric (FiE) and ferroelectric (FE) state in $A$-site ordered LaScO$_{3}$/BiScO$_{3}$ and LaInO$_{3}$/BiInO$_{3}$ superlattices. Such a previously unreported ferroic transition is driven by the easy switching of cation displacements without changing the overall polarization direction or crystallographic symmetry. Epitaxial strains less than 2% are predicted to be sufficient to transverse the phase boundary, across which we capture a ~5X increase in electric polarization. In a fashion similar to classic Pb-based perovskite cera…
We present a systematic approach to modeling the electrical and structural properties of charge-mismatched superlattices from first principles. Our strategy is based on bulk calculations of the parent compounds, which we perform as a function of in-plane strain and out-of-plane electric displacement field. The resulting two-dimensional phase diagrams allow us to accurately predict, without performing further calculations, the behavior of a layered heterostructure where the aforementioned building blocks are electrostatically and elastically coupled, with an arbitrary choice of the interface ch…
We report first-principles calculations on the coupling between epitaxial strain, polarization, and oxygen octahedra rotations in monodomain (PbTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(SrTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ superlattices. We show how the interplay between (i) the epitaxial strain and (ii) the electrostatic conditions, can be used to control the orientation of the main axis of the system. The electrostatic constrains at the interface facilitate the rotation of the polarization and, as a consequence, we predict large piezoelectric responses at epitaxial strains smaller than those that would be required considering only s…
First-principles density functional calculations are performed to investigate the interplay between inplane strains and interface effects in 1by1 PbTiO3/SrTiO3 and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices of tetragonal symmetry. One particular emphasis of this study is to conduct side-by-side comparisons on various ferroelectric properties in short-period superlattices and in constituent bulk materials, which turns out to be rather useful in terms of obtaining valuable insight into the different physics when ferroelectric bulks form superlattices. The various properties that are studied in this work includ…
Recent work suggested that head-to-head and tail-to-tail domain walls could be induced to form in ferroelectric superlattices by introducing compensating "delta doping" layers via chemical substitution in specified atomic planes [Phys. Rev. B 73, 020103(R), 2006]. Here we investigate a variation of this approach in which superlattices are formed of alternately stacked groups of II-IV and I-V perovskite layers, and the "polar discontinuity" at the II-IV/I-V interface effectively provides the delta-doping layer. Using first-principles calculations on SrTiO3/KNbO3 as a model system, we show that …
In this work, we propose a class of ferroelectrics (which we denote "double-path" ferroelectrics), characterized by two competing polarization switching paths for which the change in polarization is different and in fact of opposite sign. Depending on which path is favorable under given conditions, this leads to different identification of up- and down-polarized states. Since the sign of piezoelectric response depends on the assignment of up- or down-polarized state for a specific structure, this means that the material can exhibit different signs of the piezoelectric response under different …
Using first-principles density functional calculations, we study the interplay of ferroelectricity and polar discontinuities in a range of 1-1 oxide superlattices, built out of ferroelectric and paraelectric components. Studies have been carried out for a varied choice of chemical composition of the components. We find that, when polar interfaces are present, the polar discontinuities induce off- centric movements in the ferroelectric layers, even though the ferroelectric is only one unit cell thick. The distortions yield non-switchable polarizations, with magnitudes comparable to those of the…
Heterostructured material systems devoid of ferroic components are presumed not to display ordering associated with ferroelectricity. In heterostructures composed of transition metal oxides, however, the disruption introduced by an interface can affect the balance of the competing interactions among electronic spins, charges and orbitals. This has led to the emergence of properties absent in the original building blocks of a heterostructure, including metallicity, magnetism and superconductivity. Here we report the discovery of ferroelectricity in artificial tri-layer superlattices consisting …
LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) / SrTiO$_3$ (STO) heterojunctions are intriguing due to a polar discontinuity along (001), two distinct and controllable interface structures [(LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ and (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$], and interface-induced polarization. In this study, we have used soft- and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy (SW-XPS) to generate a quantitative determination of the elemental depth profiles and interface properties, band alignments, and the depth distribution of the interface-induced built-in potentials in the two constituent oxides. We observe an alternating…
The effect of Sr doping in BaTiO3 (BTO) with nominal compositions Ba0.80Sr0.20TiO3 (BSTO) have been explored in its structural, lattice vibration, dielectric, ferroelectric and electrocaloric properties. The temperature dependent dielectric results elucidate the enhancement in dielectric constant and exhibit three frequency independent transitions around 335, 250 and 185 K which are related to different structural transitions. All these transitions occur at lower temperature as compared with pristine BTO, however; remnant electric polarization (P) of BSTO is much higher than in BTO. The value …
Despite the technological significance of the tetragonal PbTiO3 for the piezoelectric transducer industry, its high pressure behaviour is quite controversial as two entirely different scenarios, involving pressure induced (1) morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) like structural transition with concomitant rotation of the ferroelectric polarization vector and (2) antiferrodistortive (AFD) phase transition followed by emergence of a reentrant ferroelectric phase, have been proposed in recent theoretical and experimental studies. We have attempted to address these controversies through a high resolu…
The electronic and local structural properties of CuO under pressure have been investigated by means of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at Cu K edge and ab-initio calculations, up to 17 GPa. The crystal structure of CuO consists of Cu motifs within CuO$_4$ square planar units and two elongated apical Cu-O bonds. The CuO$_4$ square planar units are stable in the studied pressure range, with Cu-O distances that are approximately constant up to 5 GPa, and then decrease slightly up to 17 GPa. In contrast, the elongated Cu-O apical distances decrease continuously with pressure in the studied ra…
