Magnetoelectric coupling terms are derived in piezoelectric/magnetostrictive (multiferroic) thin film heterostructures using Landau-Ginzburg free energy expansions in terms of strain and by considering strain boundary conditions between the two materials. Then, a general effective medium method for solving for the complete electromagnetic susceptibility tensor of such heterostructures is used to calculate the ferromagnetic resonance frequency in a BaTiO$_3$/NiFe$_2$O$_4$ superlattice. This method differs from existing methods for treating magnetoelectric heterostructures since the magnetic and electric dipolar fields are not assumed constant but vary from one film to another. The ferromagnetic resonance frequency shift is calculated as a function of applied electric field and is compared to some experimental results.
Magnetoelectric interactions in bilayers of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases are mediated by mechanical deformation. Here we discuss the theory and companion data for magnetoelectric (ME) coupling at electromechanical resonance (EMR) in a ferrite-lead zirconate titanate (PZT) bilayer. Estimated ME voltage coefficient versus frequency profiles for nickel, cobalt, or lithium ferrite and PZT reveal a giant ME effect at EMR with the highest coupling expected for cobalt ferrite-PZT. Measurements of resonance ME coupling have been carried out on layered and bulk composites of nickel ferrite…
A theoretical model is presented for low-frequency magnetoelectric (ME) effects in bilayers of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases. A novel approach, the introduction of an interface coupling parameter k, is proposed for the consideration of actual boundary conditions at the interface. An averaging method is used to estimate effective material parameters. Expressions for ME voltage coefficients are obtained by solving elastostatic and electrostatic equations. We consider both unclamped and rigidly clamped bilayers and three different field orientations of importance: (i) longitudinal fie…
How the magnetoelectric coupling actually occurs on a microscopic level in multiferroic BiFeO3 is not well known. By using the high-resolution single crystal neutron diffraction techniques, we have determined the electric polarization of each individual elements of BiFeO3, and concluded that the magnetostrictive coupling suppresses the electric polarization at the Fe site below TN. This negative magnetoelectric coupling appears to outweigh the spin current contributions arising from the cycloid spin structure, which should produce a positive magnetoelectric coupling.
Mechanical strain mediated magnetoelectric effects are studied in bilayers and trilayers of piezoelectric quartz and magnetostrictive permendur (P), an alloy of Fe-Co-V. It is shown that the magneto-electric voltage coefficient (MEVC), proportional to the ratio of the piezoelectric coupling coefficient to the permittivity, is higher in quart-based composites than for traditional ferroelectrics based ME composites. In bilayers of X-cut single crystal quartz and permendur, the MEVC varies from 1.5 V/cm Oe at 20 Hz to ~ 185 V/cm Oe at bending resonance or electromechanical resonance corresponding…
Indirect magnetoelectric effect has been studied in magnetostrictive-film/substrate/piezoelectric-actuator heterostructures. Two different substrates have been employed: a flexible substrate (Young's modulus of 4 GPa) and a rigid one (Young's modulus of 180 GPa). A clear optimization of the indirect magnetoelectric coupling, studied by micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance, has been highlighted when using the polymer substrate. However, in contrast to the rigid substrate, the flexible substrate also leads to an a priori undesirable and huge uniaxial anisotropy which seems to be related to a non …
In the first part of this work we calculate the high frequency magnetoelectric susceptibility of a simultaneously ferroelectric and canted antiferromagnetic (also know as weak ferromagnetic) thin film with magnetostrictive magnetoelectric coupling. We show that a dynamic coupling exists between the ferroelectric and optic antiferromagnetic excitations. In the second part of the paper, we calculate using an effective medium method the susceptibility of a heterostructure comprising alternating thin films of such a material together with a ferromagnet. Dipolar magnetic fields serve to couple the …
The impact of the surface on the magnetic symmetry is studied. It is shown how symmetry breaking transforms the "seeding" 90 bulk magnetic classes, which include 66 piezomagnetic classes and 58 magnetoelectric classes, into the 21 surface-induced magnetic classes, which all are piezomagnetic, piezoelectric and 19 of them are linear magnetoelectric. So, the new piezomagnetic, piezoelectric properties and linear magnetoelectric coupling should appear in nanomaterials, which are absent in the bulk.
We discuss a model that considers the bulk composite as a homogeneous medium with piezoelectric and magnetostrictive subsystems. We solve combined elastostatic, electrostatic and magnetostatic equations to obtain effective composite parameters (piezoelectric modules, magnetostriction factors, compliances, magnetoelectric coefficients) for 3-0 and 0-3 connectivities. Expressions for longitudinal and transverse low-frequency magnetoelectric voltage coefficients have been obtained for unclamped and clamped samples. Volume fractions for peak low-frequency effective magnetoelectric voltage coeffici…
Magnetoelectric (ME) effect has been studied in a structure of a magnetostrictive TbFe2 alloy, two piezoelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) ceramics, and two nonmagnetic flakes. The ME coupling originates from the magnetic-mechanical-electric transform of the magnetostrictive effect in TbFe2 and the piezoelectric effect in PZT by end bonding, instead of interface bonding. Large ME coefficients of 10.5 and 9.9 Vcm-1Oe-1 were obtained at the first planar acoustic and third bending resonance frequencies, which are larger than that of conventional layered TbFe2/PZT composites. The results show that the lar…
A new theory is developed for the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in a symmetric 2-2 ME laminate having a representative piezoelectric crystal (PMN-PT) particularly with anisotropic piezoelectric properties. Considering the average field method, the theoretical expressions for the transverse ME voltage coefficients at low and resonance frequencies were derived. The theory takes into account the anisotropic properties of the piezoelectric materials providing two different expressions of transverse ME voltage coefficients for different in-plane magnetic fields both at low and resonance frequencies…
Frequency dependence of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is investigated in trilayers of ferromagnetic alloy and piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT). The ferromagnetic phases studied include permendur, a soft magnet with high magnetostriction, iron, nickel, and cobalt. Low frequency data on ME voltage coefficient versus bias magnetic field indicate strong coupling only for trilayers with permendure or Ni. Measurements of frequency dependence of ME voltage reveal a giant ME coupling at electromechanical resonance. The ME interactions for transverse fields is an order of magnitude stronger …
Magnetoelectric (ME) interactions in layered structures of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric phases are mediated by mechanical deformation. Here we discuss the frequency dependence of ME coupling in bilayers and trilayers of Permendur, a ferromagnetic alloy, and lead zirconate titanate. Data on ME voltage coefficient versus frequency profiles reveal a giant ME coupling at electromechanical resonance. The maximum voltage coefficient of 90 V/cm Oe is three orders of magnitude higher than low-frequency values. The ME interactions for transverse fields is an order of magnitude stronger than for l…
The mechanical behavior of magnetoelectric transducers consisting of piezoelectric-magnetostrictive bilayers has been modeled. The effect of the aspect ratio of the transducer as well as the influence of non-active surrounding layers has been modeled, including a passivation layer surrounding the active device, a clamping layer above the active device, and an interfacial layer that might be inserted between the magnetostrictive and the piezoelectric layers. Strategies to control and maximize the strain magnitude and orientation based on material selection and device design are proposed.
Microstripline ferromagnetic resonance technique has been used to study the indirect magnetoelectric coupling occurring in an artificial magnetoelectric heterostructure consisting of a magnetostrictive thin film cemented onto a piezoelectric actuator. Two different modes (sweep-field and sweep-frequency modes) of this technique have been employed to quantitatively probe the indirect magnetoelectric coupling and to observe a voltage induced magnetization rotation (of 90 degree). This latter has been validated by the experimental frequency variation of the uniform mode and by the amplitude of th…
This paper reports the development of a methodology combining microstrip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) and digital image correlation (DIC) in order to silmuteanously measure the voltage-induced strains and the magnetic resonance in artificial magnetoelectric heterostructures (magnetic films/piezoelectric substrate? or magnetic films/flexible substrate/piezoelectric actuator ?). The overall principle of the technique and the related analytical modelling are described. It is powerful to estimate the magnetostriction coefficient of ferromagnetic thin films and can be used to determine the effe…
The symmetry breaking inevitably present in the vicinity of any surface, namely an inversion center disappears in surface normal direction and only axes and planes normal to the surface conserve, gives rise to the spontaneous piezomagnetic, piezoelectric and magnetoelectric effects in nanosystems, while the effects can be absent in a bulk material. All these phenomena are inherent to nanos made of materials belonging to all ninety bulk magnetic classes. Therefore the new linear magnetoelectrics should appear among nanomaterials, nonpiezomagnetic and nonpiezoelectric in the bulk. To demonstrate…
THz polarization control upon generation is a crucially missing functionality. THz spintronic emitters based on the inverse spin Hall effect allow for this by the strict implicit orthogonality between their magnetization state and the emitted polarization. This control was up till now only demonstrated using cumbersome external magnetic field biasing to impose a polarization direction. We present here for the first time an efficient voltage control of the polarization state of terahertz spintronic emitters. Using a ferromagnetic spin pumping multilayer exhibiting simultaneously strong uniaxial…
A magnetoelectric surface acoustic wave (MESAW) type device based on piezoelectric/magnetostrictive heterostructure was proposed to use as weak magnetic field sensor. Unlike conventional magnetoelectric bulk laminates or film stacks collecting magnetic field induced electrical charge, the MESAW detects the shift of the center frequency, which highly depends on the magnetic field due to the giant delta E effect and the phase velocity dispersion. The magnetic field sensitivity can reach 10^(-11) Tesla in consideration of 100 Hz frequency accuracy. Additionally, the unique working mechanism of ME…
The magnetoelectric (ME) coupling of cylindrical trilayered composite was studied in this paper. The Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-Ni trilayered cylindrical composite was synthesized by electro-deposition. The maximum ME voltage coefficient of cylindrical ME composite is 35V/cm Oe, about three times higher than that of the plate trilayered composite with the same raw materials and magnetostrictive- piezoelectric phase thickness ratio. The high ME voltage coefficient of cylindrical composite owes to the self-bound effect of circle. Moreover, the resulting complex condition can induce a doubl…
We introduce the notion of inverse effect of magnetostriction for magnetostrictive/piezoelectric heterostructures and study this effect theoretically and experimentally. It is shown that the inverse effect of magnetostriction may crucially contribute to the mechanism of magnetoelectric coupling. It is shown that the studied effect essentially modifies the saturation magnetostriction of the whole structure as compared to its magnetic phase bulk and also induces an additional magnetic anisotropy. Our consideration provides useful insight into the fundamental issue of strain-mediated magnetoelect…
We fabricated Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3-NiFe2O4 composite films consisting of randomly dispersed NiFe2O4 nanoparticles in the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 matrix. The structural analysis revealed that the crystal axes of the NiFe2O4 nanoparticles are aligned with those of the ferroelectric matrix. The composite has good ferroelectric and magnetic properties. We measured the transverse and longitudinal components of the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient, which supports the postulate that the magnetoelectric effect comes from direct stress coupling between magnetostrictive NiFe2O4 and piezoelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti…
The observation of strong magnetoelectric effects is reported in thick film bilayers and multilayers of ferrite-lead titanate zirconate (PZT) and lanthanum nanganite-PZT. The ferrites used in our studies included pure and zinc substituted cobalt-, nickel- and lithium ferrites. Samples were prepared by sintering 10-40 mm thick films obtained by tape-casting. Measurements of ME voltage coefficients at 10-1000 Hz indicated a giant ME effect in nickel ferrite-PZT, but a relatively weak coupling in other ferrite-PZT and manganite-PZT systems. Multilayers prepared by hot pressing was found to show a…
Magnetoelectric (ME) voltage coefficient was always considered independent on in-plane shape of plate layered magnetostrictive-piezoelectric composites due to the oversimplification in ME theoretical models. In this article, we present that in fact the ME voltage coefficient is largely dependent on the in-plane shape owing to shape demagnetization effect on magnetostrictivity. Theoretical analysis and experimental results both indicate that ME voltage coefficient changes notably with the variation of in-plane sizes (length and width) of layered ME properties. ME coefficient increases with the …
We report the high strength of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling of trilayered composites prepared by electro-deposition. The ME coupling of Ni-lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-Ni trilayered structure was measured ranged from1 kHz to 120 kHz. The trilayered composites exhibit high magnetoelectric voltage coefficient because of good bonding between piezoelectric and magnetostrictive layers. The maximum magnetoelectric voltage coefficient can be up to 33 V/cm Oe at the electromechanical resonance frequency. This magnetoelectric effect shows promising application in transducers for magnetoelectric energ…
We develop a coupled nonlinear oscillator model involving magnetization and strain to explain several experimentally observed dynamical features exhibited by forced magnetostrictive ribbon. Here we show that the model recovers the observed period doubling route to chaos as function of the dc field for a fixed ac field and quasiperiodic route to chaos as a function of the ac field, keeping the dc field constant. The model also predicts induced and suppressed chaos under the influence of an additional small-amplitude near resonant ac field. Our analysis suggests rich dynamics in coupled order pa…
Strain-coupled magnetoelectric (ME) phenomena in piezoelectric / ferromagnetic thin-film bilayers are a promising paradigm for sensors and information storage devices, where strain is utilized to manipulate the magnetization of the ferromagnetic film. In-plane magnetization rotation with an electric field across the film thickness has been challenging due to the virtual elimination of in-plane piezoelectric strain by substrate clamping, and to the requirement of anisotropic in-plane strain in two-terminal devices. We have overcome both of these limitations by fabricating lithographically patte…
A giant magnetoelectric polarization is found in HoAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. The polarization in transverse field geometry at 70 kOe reaches 3600 $μC/m^2$ which is significantly higher than reported values of linear magnetoelectric or even multiferroic compounds. The magnetostrictive effect is also measured and compared with the magnetoelectricity. The results show that spin-lattice coupling in HoAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ is extremely strong and that the magnetic field causes a large polar distortion of the ionic positions in the unit cell.
Strain-mediated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in ferroelectric (FE) / ferromagnetic (FM) heterostructures offers a unique opportunity for both fundamental scientific research and low power multifunctional devices. Relaxor-ferroelectrics, like (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-(x)PbTiO3 (PMN-xPT), are ideal FE layer candidates due to their giant piezoelectricity. But thin films of PMN-PT suffer from substrate clamping which substantially reduces piezoelectric in-plane strains. Here we present the first demonstration of low voltage ME coupling in an all-thin-film heterostructure which utilizes the anisotrop…
We have investigated the magnetoelectric coupling in the lone pair containing piezoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3. Significant magnetocapacitance develops in the magnetically ordered state (TC = 60 K). We find critical behavior near TC and a divergence near the metamagnetic transition at 500 Oe. High-resolution X-ray and neutron powder diffraction measurements show that Cu2OSeO3 is metrically cubic down to 10 K but that the ferrimagnetic ordering reduces the symmetry to rhombohedral R3. The metric cubic lattice dimensions exclude a magnetoelectric coupling mechanism involving spontaneous lattic…
We have investigated the magnetoelectric (ME) effect in layered composite rings subjected to circumferential AC magnetic fields and DC magnetic fields in radial, axial or circumferential directions. Bilayer samples were obtained combining different grades of commercial Mn-Zn ferrites or Ni-Zn ferrites with commercial lead zirconate titanate (PZT). Mn-Zn ferrites with low magnetostriction saturation () and low magneto-crystalline anisotropy constants show high ME capabilities when associated with PZT in ring structures. In certain conditions, these ME effects are higher than those obtained with…
Magnetoelectric coupling between magnetic and electric dipoles is one of the cornerstones of modern physics towards developing the most energy-efficient magnetic data storage. Conventionally, magnetoelectric coupling is achieved in single-phase multiferroics or in magnetoelectric composite nanostructures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric/piezoelectric materials. Here, we demonstrate an electric-field-induced strain-mediated magnetoelectric effect in ultrathin CoFeB/MgO magnetic tunnel junction employing non-piezoelectric material, which is a vitally important structure for spintron…
We demonstrate reproducible voltage induced non-volatile switching of the magnetization in an epitaxial thin Fe81Ga19 film. Switching is induced at room temperature and without the aid of an external magnetic field. This is achieved by the modification of the magnetic anisotropy by mechanical strain induced by a piezoelectric transducer attached to the layer. Epitaxial Fe81Ga19 is shown to possess the favourable combination of cubic magnetic anisotropy and large magnetostriction necessary to achieve this functionality with experimentally accessible levels of strain. The switching of the magnet…

The first observation of microwave magnetoelectric (ME) interactions through ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in bilayers of single crystal ferromagnetic-piezoelectric oxides and a theoretical model for the effect are presented. An electric field E produces a mechanical deformation in the piezoelectric phase, resulting in a shift dHE in the resonance field for the ferromagnet. The strength of ME coupling is obtained from data on dHE vs E. Studies were performed at 9.3 GHz on bilayers of (111) yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films and (001) lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT). The samples were…
In this study we have compared magnetic, magnetostrictive and piezomagnetic properties of isotropic and anisotropic cobalt ferrite pellets. The isotropic sample was prepared by the ceramic method while the sample exhibiting uniaxial anisotropy was made by reactive sintering using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). This technique permits to induce a magnetic anisotropy in cobalt ferrite in the direction of the applied pressure during SPS process. Sample with uniaxial anisotropy revealed a higher longitudinal magnetostriction and piezomagnetism compared to the isotropic sample, but the transversal ma…
Multiferroic composite materials, consisting of coupled ferromagnetic and piezoelectric phases, are of great importance in the drive towards creating faster, smaller and more energy efficient devices for information and communications technologies. Such devices require thin ferromagnetic films with large magnetostriction and narrow microwave resonance linewidths. Both properties are often degraded, compared to bulk materials, due to structural imperfections and interface effects in the thin films. We report the development of single crystal thin films of Galfenol (Fe81Ga19) with magnetostricti…
We investigate theoretically the magnetic dynamics in a ferroelectric/ferromagnetic heterostructure coupled via strain-mediated magnetoelectric interaction. We predict an electric field-induced magnetic switching in the plane perpendicular to the magneto-crystalline easy axis, and trace this effect back to the piezoelectric control of the magnetoelastic coupling. We also investigate the magnetic remanence and the electric coercivity.
The existence of magnetostriction in bulk BiFeO3 is still a matter of investigation and it is also an issue to investigate the magnetostriction effect in nano BiFeO3. Present work demonstrates the existence of magnetostrictive strain in superparamagnetic BiFeO3 nanoparticles at room temperature and the magnetoelectric coupling properties in composite form with P(VDFTrFE). Despite few reports on the magnetostriction effect in bulk BiFeO3 evidenced by the indirect method, the direct method (strain gauge) was employed in this work to examine the magnetostriction of superparamagnetic BiFeO3. In ad…
Reversible control of magnetization by electric fields without assistance from a subsidiary magnetic field or electric current could help reduce the power consumption in spintronic devices. When increasing temperature above room temperature, FeRh displays an uncommon antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition linked to a unit cell volume expansion. Thus, using the strain exerted by an adjacent piezoelectric layer, the relative amount of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic regions can be tuned by an electric field applied to the piezoelectric material. Indeed, large variations in the s…
The general approach for the consideration of the magnetoelectric effects in ferroic nanorods is proposed in the framework of the phenomenological theory. The intrinsic surface stress, magneto- and electrostriction as well as piezoelectric and piezomagnetic effects are included into the free energy. The intrinsic surface stress under the curved nanoparticle surface is shown to play an important role in the shift of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic transition temperatures and built-in magnetic and electric fields appearance, which are inversely proportional to the nanorod radius. We consider the…
Rotating the magnetization of a magnetostrictive nanomagnet with electrically generated mechanical strain dissipates miniscule amount of energy compared to any other rotation method and would have been the ideal method to write bits in nonvolatile magnetic memory, except strain cannot ordinarily rotate the magnetization of magnet by more than 90 degrees and "flip" it. Here, we describe a scheme to achieve complete 180 degree rotation of the magnetization of a nanomagnet with strain that will enable writing of binary bits in non-volatile magnetic memory implemented with magneto-tunneling juncti…
Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory for BiFeO3 dense fine grained ceramics with quasi spherical grains and nanosized inter grain spaces enriched by elastic defects, we calculated a surprisingly strong size-induced increase of the AFM temperature caused by the joint action of rotomagnetic and magnetostrictive coupling. Notably that all parameters included in the LGD functional have been extracted from experiments, not assumed. Complementary we performed experiments for dense BiFeO3 ceramics, which revealed that the shift of antiferromagnetic transition to 690 K instead of 645 K for a …
Low frequency magnetoelectric (ME) coupling has been investigated in bulk and multilayers of cobalt zinc ferrite, Co1-xZnxFe2O4 (x=0-0.6), and lead zirconate titanate. In bulk samples, the transverse and longitudinal couplings are weak and are of equal magnitude. A substantial strengthening of ME interactions is evident in layered structures, with the ME voltage coefficient a factor of 10-30 higher than in bulk samples. Important findings of the studies in layered composites are as follows. (i) The transverse coupling is stronger than the longitudinal coupling. (ii) The strength of ME interact…
Power dissipation is one of the most important factors limiting the future miniaturisation of integrated circuits. The capability of controlling magnetic states with a low voltage through magnetoelectric coupling in magnetostrictive/piezoelectric systems may pave the way toward ultra low-power electronics. Although the former effect has been demon-strated in several multiferroic heterostructures, the incorporation of such complex geometries into practical magnetic memory and logic nanodevices has been lacking. Here, we demonstrate the room temperature control of a domain wall gate with an elec…
Electric-field control of magnetism without electric currents potentially revolutionizes spintronics towards ultralow power. Here by using mechanically coupled phase field simulations, we computationally demonstrate the application of the strain-mediated magnetoelectric effect for the electric-field control of magnetic states in heterostructure. In the model heterostructure constituted of the soft nanomagnet Co and the piezoelectric substrate PMN-PT, both the volatility of magnetic states and the magnetization switching dynamics excited by the electric field are explored. It is found that an e…
We investigate the influence of a well-defined reversible biaxial strain <=0.12 % on the magnetization (M) of epitaxial ferromagnetic manganite films. M has been recorded depending on temperature, strain and magnetic field in 20 - 50 nm thick films. This is accomplished by reversibly compressing the isotropic in-plane lattice parameter of the rhombohedral piezoelectric 0.72PMN-0.28PT (001) substrates by application of an electric field E <= 12 kV cm-1. The magnitude of the total variable in-plane strain has been derived. Strain-induced shifts of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) of up t…
Extrinsic multiferroic hybrid structures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric layers elastically coupled to each other are promising due to their robust magnetoelectric effects even at room temperature. For a quantitative analysis of these magnetoelectric effects, a detailed knowledge of the piezoelectric and magnetoelastic behavior of both constituents as well as their mutual elastic coupling is mandatory. We here report on a theoretical and experimental study of the magnetic behavior of BaTiO3-based extrinsic multiferroic structures. An excellent agreement between molecular dynamics…
Magnetoelectric coupling permits a magnetic order parameter to be addressed electrically or vice versa, and could find use in data storage, field sensors and actuators. Coupling constants for single phase materials such as chromium dioxide, boracites and manganites are typically as low as 10^{-12} - 10^{-9} s/m, e.g. because the polarisations and magnetisations are small. Two phase multiferroics with strain mediated coupling, such as laminates, composites and epitaxial nanostructures, are more promising because each phase may be independently optimised. The resulting magnetoelectric switching …
Using the symmetry theory we analyze of the flexomagnetic effect in all 90 magnetic classes and showed that 69 of them are flexomagnetic. Then we explore how the symmetry breaking, inevitably present in the vicinity of the surface, changes the local symmetry and thus the form of the flexomagnetic tensors. All possible surface magnetic classes (in the number of 19) were obtained from the 90 bulk magnetic classes for the surface cuts 001, 010 and 100 types. It appeared that all 90 bulk magnetic classes become flexomagnetic, piezomagnetic and piezoelectric in the vicinity of surface. Using the fr…
We have investigated the magnetic properties of a piezoelectric actuator/ferromagnetic semiconductor hybrid structure. Using a GaMnAs epilayer as the ferromagnetic semiconductor and applying the piezo-stress along its [110] direction, we quantify the magnetic anisotropy as a function of the voltage V_p applied to the piezoelectric actuator using anisotropic magnetoresistance techniques. We find that the easy axis of the strain-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy contribution can be inverted from the [110] to the [1-10] direction via the application of appropriate voltages V_p. At T=5K the mag…
The magnetic anisotropy of a FeCuNbSiB (Finemet) film deposited on Kapton has been studied by micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance technique. We have shown that the flexibility of the substrate allows a good transmission of elastic strains generated by a piezoelectric actuator. Following the resonance field angular dependence, we also demonstrate the possibility of controlling the magnetic anisotropy of the film by applying relatively small voltages to the actuator. Moreover, a suitable model taking into account the effective elastic strains measured by digital image correlation and the effecti…
