Based on the locality principle of insulating superlattices, we apply the method of Wu {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Letter {\bf 101}, 087610 (2008)] to the piezoelectric strains of individual layers under fixed displacement field. For a superlattice of arbitrary stacking sequence an accurate model is acquired for predicting piezoelectricity. By applying the model in the superlattices where ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive modes are in competition, functional piezoelectricity can be achieved. A strong nonlinear effect is observed and can be further engineered in the PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice and an interface enhancement of piezoelectricity is found in the BaTiO$_3$/CaTiO$_3$ superlattice.
The origin of the functional properties of complex oxide superlattices can be resolved using time-resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction into contributions from the component layers making up the repeating unit. The CaTiO3 layers of a CaTiO3/BaTiO3 superlattice have a piezoelectric response to an applied electric field, consistent with a large continuous polarization throughout the superlattice. The overall piezoelectric coefficient at large strains, 54 pm/V, agrees with first-principles predictions in which a tetragonal symmetry is imposed on the superlattice by the SrTiO3 substrate.
Short period ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO)/PbTiO3 (PTO) superlattices are studied using density functional theory. Contrary to the trends in paraelectric/ferroelectric superlattices the polarization remains nearly constant for PTO concentrations below 50%. In addition, a significant decrease in the c/a ratio below the PTO values were observed. Using a superlattice effective Hamiltonian we predict an enhancement in the d33 piezoelectric coefficient peaking at ~75% PTO concentration due to the different polarization-strain coupling in PTO and BTO layers. Further analysis reveals that …
Tetragonal ferroelectric/ferroelectric BaTiO3/PbTiO3 superlattice under uniaxial tensile stress along the c axis is investigated from first principles. We show that the calculated ideal tensile strength is 6.85 GPa and that the superlattice under the loading of uniaxial tensile stress becomes soft along the nonpolar axes. We also find that the appropriately applied uniaxial tensile stress can significantly enhance the piezoelectricity for the superlattice, with piezoelectric coefficient d33 increasing from the ground state value by a factor of about 8, reaching 678.42 pC/N. The underlying mech…
Piezoelectrics play a critical role in various applications. The permanent dipole associated with the molecular cations in organometal-halide perovskites (OMHPs) may lead to spontaneous polarization and thus piezoelectricity. Here, we explore the piezoelectric properties of OMHPs with density functional theory. We find that the piezoelectric coefficient depends sensitively on the molecular ordering, and that the experimentally observed light-enhanced piezoelectricity is due to to a non-polar to polar structural transition. By comparing OMHPs with different atomic substitutions in the $ABX_3$ a…
The stability of high-symmetry $P4mm$ polar phase in eleven ferroelectric perovskite superlattices with the polar discontinuity is studied from first principles. In most superlattices, this phase exhibits either the ferroelectric or the antiferrodistortive instability, or both of them. The structure of the ground state and, for a number of systems, also of metastable phases in these superlattices is found. The spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of superlattices are calculated. The appearance of high piezoelectric coefficients (up to 150-270 pC/N) in some superlattices is ass…
Recent work suggested that head-to-head and tail-to-tail domain walls could be induced to form in ferroelectric superlattices by introducing compensating "delta doping" layers via chemical substitution in specified atomic planes [Phys. Rev. B 73, 020103(R), 2006]. Here we investigate a variation of this approach in which superlattices are formed of alternately stacked groups of II-IV and I-V perovskite layers, and the "polar discontinuity" at the II-IV/I-V interface effectively provides the delta-doping layer. Using first-principles calculations on SrTiO3/KNbO3 as a model system, we show that …
Interface engineering in perovskite oxide superlattices has developed into a flourishing field, enabling not only further tuning of the exceptional properties, but also giving access to emergent physical phenomena. Here, we reveal a new mechanism for enhancing the electric polarization by the interface-induced oxygen octahedral tilts in BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices. By combining a novel genetic algorithm with density functional theory (DFT), we predict that the true ground states in 1:1 and 2:2 BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices grown on SrTiO3 adopt Pc symmetry with a large proper electric polarizati…
In the development of first-principles high-throughput searches for materials with desirable functional properties, there is a clear need for an efficient method to determine the ground state and low-energy alternative structures of superlattices. A method based on a simple strategy -- to generate starting structures based on low-energy structures of the constituent compounds, which are then optimized via structural relaxation calculations -- is proposed. This "stacking method" is demonstrated on the 2:2 PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice, which has been the subject of recent experimental and th…
In insulators, the method of Marzari and Vanderbilt [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 56}, 12847 (1997)] can be used to generate maximally localized Wannier functions whose centers are related to the electronic polarization. In the case of layered insulators, this approach can be adapted to provide a natural definition of the local polarization associated with each layer, based on the locations of the nuclear charges and one-dimensional Wannier centers comprising each layer. Here, we use this approach to compute and analyze layer polarizations of ferroelectric perovskite superlattices, including changes in l…
In ABO3 perovskites, oxygen octahedron rotations are common structural distortions that can promote large ferroelectricity in BiFeO3 with an R3c structure [1], but suppress ferroelectricity in CaTiO3 with a Pbnm symmetry [2]. For many CaTiO3-like perovskites, the BiFeO3 structure is a metastable phase. Here, we report the stabilization of the highly-polar BiFeO3-like phase of CaTiO3 in a BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice grown on a SrTiO3 substrate. The stabilization is realized by a reconstruction of oxygen octahedron rotations at the interface from the pattern of nonpolar bulk CaTiO3 to a different…
Discovering materials that display a linear magnetoelectric effect at room temperature is challenge. Such materials could facilitate novel devices based on the electric-field control of magnetism. Here we present simple, chemically intuitive design rules to identify a new class of bulk magnetoelectric materials based on the 'bicolor' layering of $Pnma$ ferrite perovskites, e.g., LaFeO$_3$/ LnFeO$_3$ superlattices for which Ln = lanthanide cation. We use first-principles density-functional theory calculations to confirm these ideas. Additionally, we elucidate the origin of this effect and show …
Results from dielectric and structural measurements on epitaxial SrTiO$_3$/BaZrO$_3$ superlattices reveal properties that cannot be explained simply in terms of those measured on single films of the constituent materials. For large superlattice periodicities (20/20 and 38/38 structures, i.e. samples in which each SrTiO3 and BaZrO3 layer are 20 or 38 unit cells thick, respectively), the capacitance-voltage curves indicate room-temperature ferroelectricity. For smaller periodicities (7/7 and 15/15), anti-ferroelectric-type behavior is observed, suggesting strong coupling between individual polar…
Using first-principles density functional theory, we study piezoelectricity in short-period superlattices made with combination of ferroelectric and paraelectric components and exhibiting polar discontinuities. We show that piezoelectric response of such a superlattice can be tuned both in terms of sign and magnitude with a choice of its components. As these superlattices with nonswitchable polarization do not undergo ferroelectric transitions, we predict them to exhibit a robust piezoelectric response with weaker temperature dependence compared to their bulk counterparts.
The stability of a high-symmetry $P4mm$ polar phase in seventeen short-period ferroelectric perovskite superlattices with polar discontinuity is studied from first principles within the density-functional theory. It is shown that in most superlattices this phase exhibits either the ferroelectric instability or the antiferrodistortive one, or both of them. For each superlattice, the ground-state structure, the structure of possible metastable phases, the spontaneous polarization, and piezoelectric properties are calculated. The properties of superlattices with the polar discontinuity are compar…
We carry out first-principles calculations of the nonlinear dielectric response of short-period ferroelectric superlattices. We compute and store not only the total polarization, but also the Wannier-based polarizations of individual atomic layers, as a function of electric displacement field, and use this information to construct a model capable of predicting the nonlinear dielectric response of an arbitrary superlattice sequence. We demonstrate the successful application of our approach to superlattices composed of SrTiO$_3$, CaTiO$_3$, and BaTiO$_3$ layers.
In this work, we use density functional theory calculations to demonstrate how spontaneous electric polarizations can be induced \textit{via} a hybrid improper ferroelectric mechanism in iodide perovskites, a family well-known to display solar-optimal band gaps, to create new materials for photoferroic applications. We first assemble three chemically distinct ($A$$A^{\prime}$)($B$$B^{\prime}$)I$_6$ double perovskites using centrosymmetric $AB$I$_3$ perovskite iodides (where $A$ = Cs, Rb, K and $B$ = Sn, Ge) as building units. In each superlattice, we investigate the effects of three types of $…
We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
We propose to insert TiO layers to perovskite ATiO$_{3}$ to form a superlattice and use first-principles calculations to investigate its basic properties. Our computational analysis shows that the structure, which consists of repeated ATiO_{3} and TiO layers, has strong anisotropic conductivity. The structure immediately suggests a possible control of its conductivity by ion displacements related to its intrinsic ferroelectricity. In addition, we have obtained the structural information of its low-energy phases with the aid of phonon calculation and examined their evolution with epitaxial stra…
We report the fabrication of (111)-oriented superlattice structures with alternating 2m-layers (m = 1, 2, and 3) of Ca0.5Sr0.5IrO3 perovskite and two layers of SrTiO3 perovskite on SrTiO3(111) substrates. In the case of m = 1 bilayer films, the Ir sub-lattice is a buckled honeycomb, where a topological state may be anticipated. The successful growth of superlattice structures on an atomic level along the [111] direction was clearly demonstrated by superlattice reflections in x-ray diffraction patterns and by atomically-resolved transmission electron microscope images. The ground states of the …
We report the structural and magnetoelectrical properties of La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$ perovskite superlattices grown on (001)-oriented SrTiO$_3$ by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Magnetic hysteresis loops together with temperature dependent magnetic properties exhibit well-defined coercivity and magnetic transition temperature (T$_C$) \symbol{126}140 K. $DC$ electrical studies of films show that the magnetoresistance (MR) is dependent on the BaTiO$_3$ thickness and negative $MR$ as high as 30% at 100K are observed. The $AC$ electrical studies reveal that the impedance and …
First-principles techniques are used to investigate the behavior of BiFeO$_{3}$/LaFeO$_{3}$ perovskite oxide superlattices epitaxially grown on a (001)-SrTiO$_3$ substrate. The calculations show that 1/1 superlattices exhibit a $Pmc2_1$ ground state combining a trilinear coupling of one polar and two oxygen rotational lattice modes, and weak ferromagnetism. The microscopic mechanism allowing one to manipulate the magnetization with an electric field in such systems is presented and its dependence on strain and chemical substitution is discussed. BiFeO$_{3}$/LaFeO$_{3}$ artificial superlattices…
Using an extension of a first-principles method developed by King-Smith and Vanderbilt [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 49}, 5828 (1994)], we investigate the effects of in-plane epitaxial strain on the ground-state structure and polarization of eight perovskite oxides: BaTiO$_3$, SrTiO$_3$, CaTiO$_3$, KNbO$_3$, NaNbO$_3$, PbTiO$_3$, PbZrO$_3$, and BaZrO$_3$. In addition, we investigate the effects of a nonzero normal stress. The results are shown to be useful in predicting the structure and polarization of perovskite oxide thin films and superlattices.
Design of novel artificial materials based on ferroelectric perovskites relies on the basic principles of electrostatic coupling and in-plane lattice matching. These rules state that the out-of-plane component of the electric displacement field and the in-plane components of the strain are preserved across a layered superlattice, provided that certain growth conditions are respected. Intense research is currently directed at optimizing materials functionalities based on these guidelines, often with remarkable success. Such principles, however, are of limited practical use unless one disposes o…
We perform first-principles density functional calculations to explore the role of substrate proximity effects on the octahedral rotation patterns in perovskite oxide superlattices. With cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ as our model film and tetragonal SrTiO$_3$ as the substrate, we show that in most cases the substrate octahedral rotation patterns propagate into the film across the heterointerface. We also identify elastic boundary conditions for which the enforced structural coherence induces atomic displacement patterns that are not found in the bulk phase diagram of either individual constituent…
Motivated by recent experiments, we use the $+U$ extension of the generalized gradient approximation to density functional theory to study superlattices composed of alternating layers of LaNiO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. For comparison we also study a rocksalt ((111) double perovskite) structure and bulk LaNiO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. A Wannier function analysis indicates that band parameters are transferable from bulk to superlattice situations with the exception of the transition metal d-level energy, which has a contribution from the change in d-shell occupancy. The charge transfer from Mn to Ni is found …
In the first-principles bulk-layer model the superlattice structure and polarization are determined by first-principles computation of the bulk responses of the constituents to the electrical and mechanical boundary conditions in an insulating superlattice. In this work the model is extended to predict functional properties, specifically dielectric permittivity and piezoelectric response. A detailed comparison between the bulk-layer model and full first-principles calculations for three sets of perovskite oxide superlattices, PbTiO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$, is…

The effect of layer-by-layer heterostructuring and epitaxial strain on lattice instabilities and related ferroelectric properties is investigated from first principles for the [001]-(PbTiO$_3$)$_1$(PbZrO$_3$)$_1$ superlattice and pure PbTiO$_3$ on a cubic substrate. The results for the superlattice show an enhancement of the stability of the monoclinic r-phase with respect to pure PbTiO$_3$. Analysis of the lattice instabilities of the relaxed centrosymmetric reference structure computed within density functional perturbation theory suggests that this results from the presence of two unstable …
Epitaxial interfaces and superlattices comprised of polar and non-polar perovskite oxides have generated considerable interest because they possess a range of desirable properties for functional devices. In this work, emergent polarization in superlattices of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) is demonstrated. By controlling the interfaces between polar LCO and non-polar STO, polarization is induced throughout the STO layers of the superlattice. Using x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy displacements of the Ti cations off-…
We perform density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory calculations to investi- gate internal charge transfer in an artificial superlattice composed of alternating layers of vanadate and manganite perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper structure materials. We show that the elec- tronegativity difference between vanadium and manganese causes moderate charge transfer from VO2 to MnO2 layers in both perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper based superlattices, leading to hole doping of the VO2 layer and electron doping of the MnO2 layer. Comparison of the perovskite and Ruddlesden-Popper based h…

Perovskite bilayers with (111)-orientation combine a honeycomb lattice as a key feature with the strongly correlated, multiorbital nature of electrons in transition metal oxides. In a systematic DFT+$U$ study of (111)-oriented (La$X$O$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_4$ superlattices, we establish trends in the evolution of ground states versus band filling in (111)-oriented (La$X$O$_3$)$_2$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_4$ superlattices, with $X$ spanning the entire $3d$ transition metal series. The competition between local quasi-cubic and global triangular symmetry triggers unanticipated broken symmetry phases, with m…
A set of broken symmetry two-dimensional ground states are predicted in (111)-oriented (LaNiO$_3$)$_N$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_M$ ($N$/$M$) superlattices, based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations including a Hubbard $U$ term. An unanticipated Jahn-Teller distortion with $d_{z^2}$ orbital polarization and a FM Mott insulating (and multiferroic) phase emerges in the double perovskite (1/1), that shows strong susceptibility to strain-controlled orbital engineering. The LaNiO$_3$ bilayer with graphene topology has a switchable multiferroic (ferromagnetic (FM) and ferroelectric) insulating ground…
