Epitaxial interfaces and superlattices comprised of polar and non-polar perovskite oxides have generated considerable interest because they possess a range of desirable properties for functional devices. In this work, emergent polarization in superlattices of SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) is demonstrated. By controlling the interfaces between polar LCO and non-polar STO, polarization is induced throughout the STO layers of the superlattice. Using x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy displacements of the Ti cations off-center within TiO6 octahedra along the superlattice growth direction are measured. This distortion gives rise to built-in potential gradients within the STO and LCO layers, as measured by in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory models explain the mechanisms underlying this behavior, revealing the existence of both an intrinsic polar distortion and a built-in electric field, which are due to alternately positively and negatively charged interfaces in the superlattice. This study paves the way for controllable polarization for carrier separation in multilayer materials and highlights the crucial role that interface structure plays in governing such behavior.
The effect of growth conditions on the structural and electronic properties of the polar/non-polar LaCrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LCO/STO) interface has been investigated. The interface is either insulating or metallic depending on growth conditions. A high sheet carrier concentration of 2x10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ and mobility of 30,000 cm$^2$/V s is reported for the metallic interfaces, which is similar to the quasi-two dimensional gas at the LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ interface with similar growth conditions. High-resolution synchrotron X-ray-based structural determination of the atomic-scale structures of bo…
LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) / SrTiO$_3$ (STO) heterojunctions are intriguing due to a polar discontinuity along (001), two distinct and controllable interface structures [(LaO)$^+$/(TiO$_2$)$^0$ and (SrO)$^0$/(CrO$_2$)$^-$], and interface-induced polarization. In this study, we have used soft- and hard x-ray standing-wave excited photoemission spectroscopy (SW-XPS) to generate a quantitative determination of the elemental depth profiles and interface properties, band alignments, and the depth distribution of the interface-induced built-in potentials in the two constituent oxides. We observe an alternating…
The spontaneous polarization of epitaxial BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices is studied as a function of composition using first-principles density functional theory within the local density approximation. With the in-plane lattice parameter fixed to that of bulk SrTiO$_3$, the computed superlattice polarization is enhanced above that of bulk BaTiO$_3$ for superlattices with BaTiO$_3$ fraction larger than 40%. In contrast to their bulk paraelectric character, the SrTiO$_3$ layers are found to be {\it tetragonal and polar}, possessing nearly the same polarization as the BaTiO$_3$ layers. General…
The crystal structure and local spontaneous polarization of (BaTiO3)m/(SrTiO3)n superlattices is calculated using a first-principles density functional theory method. The in-plane lattice constant is 1% larger than the SrTiO3 substrate to imitate the relaxed superlattice structure and the symmetry is lowered to monoclinic space group Cm which allows polarization to develop along the [110] and [001] directions. The polarization component in the [110] direction is found to develop only in the SrTiO3 layers and falls to zero in the BaTiO3 layers, whereas the polarization in the [001] direction is…
Using first principles calculations, we determined the epitaxial-strain dependence of the ground state of the 1:1 SrCrO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattice. The superlattice layering leads to significant changes in the electronic states near the Fermi level, derived from Cr $t_{2g}$ orbitals. An insulating phase is found when the tensile strain is greater than 2.2\% relative to unstrained cubic SrTiO$_3$. The insulating character is shown to arise from Cr $t_{2g}$ orbital ordering, which is produced by an in-plane polar distortion that couples to the superlattice d-bands and is stabilized by epitaxial …
Ferroelectrics are characterized by domain structures as are other ferroics. At the nanoscale though, ferroelectrics may exhibit non-trivial or exotic polarization configurations under proper electrostatic and elastic conditions. These polar states may possess emerging properties not present in the bulk compounds and are promising for technological applications. Here, the observation of rotational polarization topologies at the nanoscale by means of aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is reported in BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices grown on cubic SrTiO3(001). The transiti…
Accessing the regime of coherent phonon propagation in nanostructures opens enormous possibilities to control the thermal conductivity in energy harvesting devices, phononic circuits, etc. In this paper we show that coherent phonons contribute substantially to the thermal conductivity of LaCoO3/SrTiO3 oxide superlattices, up to room temperature. We show that their contribution can be tuned through small variations of the superlattice periodicity, without changing the total superlattice thickness. Using this strategy, we tuned the thermal conductivity by 20% at room temperature. We also discuss…
Artificial PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices were constructed using off-axis RF magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction and piezoelectric atomic force microscopy were used to study the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization as the ratio of PbTiO$_{3}$ to SrTiO$_{3}$ was changed. For PbTiO$_{3}$ layer thicknesses larger than the 3-unit cells SrTiO$_{3}$ thickness used in the structure, the polarization is found to be reduced as the PbTiO$_{3}$ thickness is decreased. This observation confirms the primary role of the depolarization field in the polarization reduction in thin films. For …
We report first-principles calculations, within the density functional theory, on the structural and energetic properties of 180$^\circ$ stripe domains in (PbTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(SrTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ superlattices. For the explored periodicities ($n$=3 and 6) we find that the polydomain structures compete in energy with the monodomain phases. Our results suggest the progressive transition, as a function of $n$, from a strong to a weak electrostatic coupling regime between the SrTiO$_{3}$ and PbTiO$_{3}$ layers. Structurally, they display continuous rotation of polarization connecting 180$^\circ$ do…
We report first principles characterization of the structural and electronic properties of (SrTiO$_{3}$)$_{5}$/(SrRuO$_{3}$)$_{1}$ superlattices. We show that the system exhibits a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas, extremely confined to the 4$d$ orbitals of Ru in the SrRuO$_{3}$ layer. Every interface in the superlattice behaves as a minority-spin half-metal ferromagnet, with a magnetic moment of $μ$ = 2.0 $μ_{\rm B}$/SrRuO$_{3}$ unit. The shape of the electronic density of states, half metallicity and magnetism are explained in terms of a simplified tight-binding model, considering…
The effect of epitaxial strain on the phonon spectra, crystal structure, spontaneous polarization, dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic properties of (001)-oriented ferroelectric (BaTiO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_n$ superlattices ($m = n = {}$1-4) was studied using the first-principles density-functional theory. The ground state of free-standing superlattices is the monoclinic $Cm$ polar phase. Under the in-plane biaxial compressive strain, it transforms to tetragonal $P4mm$ polar phase, and under the in-plane biaxial tensile strain, it transforms to orthorhombic $Amm2$ polar phase. When changing…
In this paper, an efficient computational material design approach (cluster expansion) is employed for the ferroelectric $PbTiO_3$/$SrTiO_3$ system. Via exploring a conguration space including over $3 \times 10^6$ candidates, two special cation ordered configurations: either perfect or mixed 1/1 (101) superlattice, are identified with the mostly enhanced ferroelectric polarization by up to about 100% in comparison with the (001) superlattice. Analyzing these two special configurations reveals the exotic couplings between the antiferrodistortive distortion (AFD) and ferroelectric polarization (…
We investigate the structural, electronic, transport, and thermoelectric properties of LaNiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3(001)$ superlattices containing either exclusively $n$- or $p$-type interfaces or coupled interfaces of opposite polarity by using density functional theory calculations with an on-site Coulomb repulsion term. The results show that significant octahedral tilts are induced in the SrTiO$_3$ part of the superlattice. Moreover, the La-Sr distances and Ni-O out-of-plane bond lengths at the interfaces exhibit a distinct variation by about $7\,\%$ with the sign of the electrostatic doping. In cont…
We report first-principles calculations on the coupling between epitaxial strain, polarization, and oxygen octahedra rotations in monodomain (PbTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$/(SrTiO$_{3}$)$_{n}$ superlattices. We show how the interplay between (i) the epitaxial strain and (ii) the electrostatic conditions, can be used to control the orientation of the main axis of the system. The electrostatic constrains at the interface facilitate the rotation of the polarization and, as a consequence, we predict large piezoelectric responses at epitaxial strains smaller than those that would be required considering only s…
We study the emergence of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phases in (PbTiO$_3$)$_3$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_3$ superlattices by means of second-principles simulations. Beyond a threshold tensile epitaxial strain of $ε= 0.25 \%$ the local dipole moments within the superlattices are confined to the film-plane, and thus the polarization can be effectively considered as two-dimensional. The analysis of the decay of the dipole-dipole correlation with the distance, together with the study of the density of defects and its distribution as function of temperature, supports the existence of a BKT phase in a…
Ab initio calculations are utilized as an input to develop a simple model of polarization in epitaxial short-period CaTiO3/SrTiO3/BaTiO3 superlattices grown on a SrTiO3 substrate. The model is then combined with a genetic algorithm technique to optimize the arrangement of individual CaTiO3, SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 layers in a superlattice, predicting structures with the highest possible polarization and a low in-plane lattice constant mismatch with the substrate. This modelling procedure can be applied to a wide range of layered perovskite-oxide nanostructures providing guidance for experimental dev…
The asymmetry of chemical nature at the hetero-structural interface offers an unique opportunity to design desirable electronic structure by controlling charge transfer and orbital hybridization across the interface. However, the control of hetero-interface remains a daunting task. Here, we report the modulation of interfacial coupling of (La0.67Sr0.33MnO3)n/(SrTiO3)n superlattices by manipulating the periodic thickness with n unit cells of SrTiO3 and n unit cells La0.67Sr0.33MnO3. The easy axis of magnetic anisotropy rotates from in-plane (n = 10) to out-of-plane (n = 2) orientation at 150 K.…
Results from dielectric and structural measurements on epitaxial SrTiO$_3$/BaZrO$_3$ superlattices reveal properties that cannot be explained simply in terms of those measured on single films of the constituent materials. For large superlattice periodicities (20/20 and 38/38 structures, i.e. samples in which each SrTiO3 and BaZrO3 layer are 20 or 38 unit cells thick, respectively), the capacitance-voltage curves indicate room-temperature ferroelectricity. For smaller periodicities (7/7 and 15/15), anti-ferroelectric-type behavior is observed, suggesting strong coupling between individual polar…
In epitaxially strained ferroelectric thin films and superlattices, the ferroelectric transition temperature can lie above the growth temperature. Ferroelectric polarization and domains should then evolve during the growth of a sample, and electrostatic boundary conditions may play an important role. In this work, ferroelectric domains, surface termination, average lattice parameter and bilayer thickness are simultaneously monitored using in-situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction during the growth of BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices on SrTiO$_3$ substrates by off-axis RF magnetron sputtering. The…
First-principles density functional calculations are performed to investigate the interplay between inplane strains and interface effects in 1by1 PbTiO3/SrTiO3 and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices of tetragonal symmetry. One particular emphasis of this study is to conduct side-by-side comparisons on various ferroelectric properties in short-period superlattices and in constituent bulk materials, which turns out to be rather useful in terms of obtaining valuable insight into the different physics when ferroelectric bulks form superlattices. The various properties that are studied in this work includ…
The defect stability in a prototypical perovskite oxide superlattice consisting of SrTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ (STO/PTO) is determined using first principles density functional theory calculations. Specifically, the oxygen vacancy formation energies E$_v$ in the paraelectric and ferroelectric phases of a superlattice with four atomic layers of STO and four layers of PTO (4STO/4PTO) are determined and compared. The effects of charge state, octahedral rotation, polarization, and interfaces on the E$_v$ are examined. The formation energies vary layer-by-layer in the superlattices, with E$_v$ being hi…
Artificial superlattices of (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)m (m= 1 to 10 unit cells) consisting of multiferroic BiFeO3 and insulating SrTiO3 layers were fabricated on (100)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. The remnant polarization and leakage current behavior were studied varying the periodicity (8-80A) of the superlattice. The leakage current was reduced by few orders of magnitude on increase of periodicity compared to single layer BiFeO3 thin films. Reduced leakage and intrinsic polarization hysteresis was observed and was confirmed by PUND analysis for periodicities in the range 20-60…
Using {\it ab initio} density functional theory we explore the behavior of thin layers of metallic $d^4$ SrFeO$_3$ confined between the $d^0$ dielectric SrTiO$_3$ in a superlattice geometry. We find the presence of insulating SrTiO$_3$ spacer layers strongly affects the electronic properties of SrFeO$_3$: For single SrFeO$_3$ layers constrained to their bulk cubic structure, the Fermi surface is two-dimensional, nested and resembles the hole-doped superconducting cuprates. A Jahn-Teller instability couples to an octahedral tilt mode, however, to remove this degeneracy resulting in insulating s…
Raman spectra of CaCuO2/SrTiO3 superlattices show clear spectroscopic marker of two structures formed in CaCuO2 at the interface with SrTiO3. For non-superconducting superlattices, grown in low oxidizing atmosphere, the 425 cm-1 frequency of oxygen vibration in CuO2 planes is the same as for CCO films with infinite layer structure (planar Cu-O coordination). For superconducting superlattices grown in highly oxidizing atmosphere, a 60 cm-1 frequency shift to lower energy occurs. This is ascribed to a change from planar to pyramidal Cu-O coordination because of oxygen incorporation at the interf…
Negative capacitance in BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in an atomistic effective Hamiltonian model, using fluctuation formulas for responses to the local macroscopic field that incorporates depolarizing fields. We show epitaxial strain can tune the negative capacitance of the BaTiO$_3$ ferroelectric layer and the overall capacitance of the system over a broad temperature range. In addition, we predict and explain an original switching of the negative capacitance from the BaTiO$_3$ layer to the SrTiO$_3$ layer at low temperatures for intermediate st…
We have measured photoemission spectra of SrTiO3/LaTiO3 superlattices with a topmost SrTiO3 layer of variable thickness. Finite coherent spectral weight with a clear Fermi cut-off was observed at chemically abrupt SrTiO3/LaTiO3 interfaces, indicating that an ``electronic reconstruction'' occurs at the interface between the Mott insulator LaTiO3 and the band insulator SrTiO3. For SrTiO3/LaTiO3 interfaces annealed at high temperatures (~ 1000 C), which leads to Sr/La atomic interdiffusion and hence to the formation of La1-xSrxTiO3-like material, the intensity of the incoherent part was found to …
By using first-principles density functional theory calculations for (LaNiO3)m/(SrTiO3)n superlattices, we report a systematic way of electronic response to the interface geometry. It is found that Fermi level density of states of metallic nickelate layers is significantly reduced without charge transfer in the vicinity of interface to the insulating SrTiO3. This type of electronic state redistribution is clearly distinctive from other interface phenomena such as charge and orbital reconstruction. Our result sheds new light towards understanding the nickelates and other transitionmetal oxide h…
We report on the fabrication of all perovskite Mott insulator/band insulator YTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattices by pulsed laser deposition. The combination of in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray reflectivity confirms the high quality of the films grown in a layer-by-layer mode. Electrical transport measurements reveal that a non-SrTiO3 based two dimensional electron gas system has formed at the YTiO3/CaTiO3 interface. These studies offer another route in the pursuit of complex oxide two-dimensional electron gas systems, which allows to obtain greater insig…
Atomic-scale precision epitaxy of perovskite oxide superlattices provides unique opportunities for controlling the correlated electronic structures, activating effective control knobs for intriguing functionalities including electromagnetic, thermoelectric, and electrocatalytic behaviors. In this study, we investigated the close interplay between the atomic and electronic structures of correlated superlattices synthesized by atomic-scale precision epitaxy. In particular, we employ superlattices composed of correlated magnetic SrRuO3 (SRO) and quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 (STO) layers. In those …
Using advanced ab-initio calculations, we describe the formation and confinement of a two-dimensional electron gas in short-period ($\simeq$4 nm) Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ superlattices as function of Nb doping. We predict complete two-dimensional confinement for doping concentrations higher than 70%. In agreement with previous observations, we find a large thermopower enhancement at room temperature. However, this effect is primarily determined by dilution of the mobile charge over a multitude of weakly occupied bands. As a general rule, we conclude that thermopower in similar heterostructures will …
Here we report about the interface reconstruction in the recently discovered superconducting artificial superlattices based on insulating CaCuO2 and SrTiO3 blocks. Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the valence bands alignment prevents any electronic reconstruction by direct charge transfer between the two blocks. We demonstrate that the electrostatic built-in potential is suppressed by oxygen redistribution in the alkaline earth interface planes. By using highly oxidizing growth conditions, the oxygen coordination in the reconstructed interfaces may be increased, resulting in th…
Using a combination of first-principles simulations, based on the density functional theory and Boltzmann's semiclassical theory, we have calculated the transport and thermoelectric properties of the half-metallic two dimensional electron gas confined in single SrRuO$_3$ layers of SrTiO$_3$/SrRuO$_3$ periodic superlattices. Close to the Fermi energy we find that the semiconducting majority spin channel displays a very large in-plane component of the Seebeck tensor at room temperature, $S$ = 1500 $μ$V/K, and the minority spin channel shows good in-plane conductivity $σ$ = 2.5 (m$Ω$cm)$^{-1}$. We explore manganite interface magnetism in epitaxially grown La0.7Sr0.3MnO3(LSMO)/SrTiO3 ultrathin superlattices (SL) along (110) orientation. we show that robust ferromagnetism persists down to four monolayers LSMO(MLs) (~1.1 nm in thickness), of which 50% Mn is at the interface state. Above eight MLs, the magnetic moment is nearly saturated to the theoretical value of 3.7u_B, with an estimated interface moment of 3.2u_B. In comparison to (100)-oriented SLs which were previously shown to have a spin canted ground state, (110)-oriented SLs exhibit stronger low-dimensional ferromagnetism and b…
Composition-dependent structural and polar properties of epitaxial short-period CaTiO_3/SrTiO_3/BaTiO_3 superlattices grown on a SrTiO_3 substrate are investigated with first-principles density-functional theory computational techniques. Polarization enhancement with respect to bulk tetragonal BaTiO_3 is found for two- and three-component superlattices with a BaTiO_3 concentration of more than 30%. Individual BaTiO_3 layer thickness is identified as an important factor governing the polarization improvement. In addition, the degree of inversion-symmetry breaking in three-component superlattice…
Recent work suggested that head-to-head and tail-to-tail domain walls could be induced to form in ferroelectric superlattices by introducing compensating "delta doping" layers via chemical substitution in specified atomic planes [Phys. Rev. B 73, 020103(R), 2006]. Here we investigate a variation of this approach in which superlattices are formed of alternately stacked groups of II-IV and I-V perovskite layers, and the "polar discontinuity" at the II-IV/I-V interface effectively provides the delta-doping layer. Using first-principles calculations on SrTiO3/KNbO3 as a model system, we show that …
A double-layered perovskite oxide Sr$_3$Mo$_2$O$_7$ is considered a "hidden ladder" system with wide and narrow bands near the Fermi level, for which high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductivity is expected. However, the difficulty in synthesis, especially in the preparation of samples without oxygen deficiency, can hinder the observation of superconductivity. In this study, we constructed a double-layer SrMoO$_3$ block through artificial superlattices with the insulating SrTiO$_3$ block, (SrMoO$_3$)$_m$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_t$ ($m = 2, 4$; $t = 4$). First-principles calculations for bilayered SrMoO$_3$ ($m = 2…
In the first-principles bulk-layer model the superlattice structure and polarization are determined by first-principles computation of the bulk responses of the constituents to the electrical and mechanical boundary conditions in an insulating superlattice. In this work the model is extended to predict functional properties, specifically dielectric permittivity and piezoelectric response. A detailed comparison between the bulk-layer model and full first-principles calculations for three sets of perovskite oxide superlattices, PbTiO$_3$/BaTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$, is…
The spontaneously formed striped polarization nanodomain configuration of a PbTiO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ superlattice transforms to a uniform polarization state under above-bandgap illumination with a time dependence varying with the intensity of optical illumination and a well-defined threshold intensity. Recovery after the end of illumination occurs over a temperature-dependent period of tens of seconds at room temperature and shorter times at elevated temperatures. A model in which the screening of the depolarization field depends on the population of trapped electrons correctly predicts the obs…
Emergent phases in the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface between two insulating oxides have attracted great attention in the past decade. We present ab-initio electronic structure calculations for the interface between a Mott insulator GdTiO$_3$ (GTO) and a band insulator SrTiO$_3$ (STO) and compare our results with those for the widely studied LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LAO/STO) interface between two band insulators. Our GTO/STO results are in excellent agreement with experiments, but qualitatively different from LAO/STO. We find an interface carrier density of 0.5$e^{-}$/…
Large magnetoelectric response in thin films is highly desired for high-throughput and high-density microelectronic applications. However, the d0 rule in single-phase compounds usually results in a weak interaction between ferroelectric and magnetic orders; the magnetoelectric coupling via elastic resonance in composites restricts their thin-film integration in broadband. Here, we effectuate a concurrence of ferroelectric-like and antiferromagnetic phase transitions in Sr2IrO4/SrTiO3 superlattices by artificial design periodically non-equivalent interfaces, where a maximum magnetoelectric coef…

Based on the locality principle of insulating superlattices, we apply the method of Wu {\it et al} [Phys. Rev. Letter {\bf 101}, 087610 (2008)] to the piezoelectric strains of individual layers under fixed displacement field. For a superlattice of arbitrary stacking sequence an accurate model is acquired for predicting piezoelectricity. By applying the model in the superlattices where ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive modes are in competition, functional piezoelectricity can be achieved. A strong nonlinear effect is observed and can be further engineered in the PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlat…
The effect of intermixing at the interface of short period PbTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ superlattices is studied using first-principles density functional theory. The results indicate that interfacial intermixing significantly enhances the polarization within the superlattice. This enhancement is directly related to the off-centering of Pb and Sr cations and can be explained through a discussion of interacting dipoles. This picture should be general for a wide range of multicomponent superlattices and may have important consequences for the design of ferroelectric devices.
The origin of the functional properties of complex oxide superlattices can be resolved using time-resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction into contributions from the component layers making up the repeating unit. The CaTiO3 layers of a CaTiO3/BaTiO3 superlattice have a piezoelectric response to an applied electric field, consistent with a large continuous polarization throughout the superlattice. The overall piezoelectric coefficient at large strains, 54 pm/V, agrees with first-principles predictions in which a tetragonal symmetry is imposed on the superlattice by the SrTiO3 substrate.

We present a study of delta ($δ$) doping at LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LTO/STO) interface with iso-structural antiferromagnetic perovskite LaCrO$_3$ (LCO) that dramatically alters the properties of the two dimensional electron gas (2-DEG) at the interface. The effects include a reduction in sheet-carrier density, prominence of the low temperature resistivity minimum, enhancement of weak antilocalization below 10 K and observation of a strong anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR). The positive and negative MR for out-of-plane and in-plane field respectively and the field and temperature dependencies of …
Measurements of magneto-thermopower (S(H, T)) of interfacial delta doped LaTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LTO/STO) heterostructure by an iso-structural antiferromagnetic perovskite LaCrO$_3$ are reported. The thermoelectric power of the pure LTO/STO interface at 300 K is $\approx$ 118 $μ$V/K, but increases dramatically on $δ$-doping. The observed linear temperature dependence of S(T) over the temperature range 100 K to 300 K is in agreement with the theory of diffusion thermopower of a two-dimensional electron gas. The S(T) displays a distinct enhancement in the temperature range (T $<$ 100 K) where the s…
By combining ab initio simulations including an on-site Coulomb repulsion term and Boltzmann theory, we explore the thermoelectric properties of (LaNiO$_3$)$_n$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_n$(001) superlattices ($n=1,3$) and identify a strong dependence on confinement, spacer thickness, and epitaxial strain. While the system with $n=3$ shows modest values of the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, the simultaneous reduction of the LaNiO$_3$ region and the LaAlO$_3$ spacer thickness to single layers results in a strong enhancement, in particular of the in-plane values. This effect can be further tuned by us…
The polarization response of antiferroelectrics to electric fields is such that the materials can store large energy densities, which makes them promising candidates for energy storage applications in pulsed-power technologies. However, relatively few materials of this kind are known. Here we consider ferroelectric/paraelectric superlattices as artificial electrostatically-engineered antiferroelectrics. Specifically, using high-throughput second-principles calculations, we engineer PbTiO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ superlattices to optimize their energy-storage performance at room temperature (to maximi…
We have conducted a detailed microscopic investigation of [LaNiO3(1 u.c.)/LaAlO3(1 u.c.)]N superlattices grown on (001) SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 to explore the influence of polar mismatch on the resulting electronic and structural properties. Our data demonstrate that the initial growth on the non-polar SrTiO3 surface leads to a rough morphology and unusual 2+ valence of Ni in the first LaNiO3 layer, which is not observed after growth on the polar surface of LaAlO3. A newly devised model suggests that the polar mismatch can be resolved if the perovskite layers grow with an excess of LaO, which also a…
Realization of a fully metallic two-dimensional electron gas at the interface between artificially-grown LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ thin films has been an exciting challenge. Here we present for the first time the successful realization of a superconducting 2DEG at interfaces between artificially-grown LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ thin films. Our results highlight the importance of two factors-the growth temperature and the SrTiO$_3$ termination. We use local friction force microscopy and transport measurements to determine that in normal growth conditions the absence of a robust metallic state at low…
