The problem of calculating the scaled limit of the joint moments of the characteristic polynomial, and the derivative of the characteristic polynomial, for matrices from the unitary group with Haar measure first arose in studies relating to the Riemann zeta function in the thesis of Hughes. Subsequently, Winn showed that these joint moments can equivalently be written as the moments for the distribution of the trace in the Cauchy unitary ensemble, and furthermore relate to certain hypergeometric functions based on Schur polynomials, which enabled explicit computations. We give a $β$-generalisation of these results, where now the role of the Schur polynomials is played by the Jack polynomials. This leads to an explicit evaluation of the scaled moments for all $β> 0$, subject to the constraint that a particular parameter therein is equal to a non negative integer. Consideration is also given to the calculation of the moments of the singular statistic $\sum_{j=1}^N 1/x_j$ for the Jacobi $β$-ensemble.
We study the linear statistics of the circular $β$-ensemble with a Stein's method argument, where the exchangeable pair is generated through circular Dyson Brownian motion. This generalizes previous results obtained in such a way for the CUE and provides a novel approach for studying linear statistics of $β$-ensembles. This approach allows studying simultaneously a collection of linear statistics whose number grows with the dimension of the ensemble. Also this approach requires estimating only low order moments of the linear statistics.
Previous works have considered the leading correction term to the scaled limit of various correlation functions and distributions for classical random matrix ensembles and their $β$ generalisations at the hard and soft edge. It has been found that the functional form of this correction is given by a derivative operation applied to the leading term. In the present work we compute the leading correction term of the correlation kernel at the spectrum singularity for the circular Jacobi ensemble with Dyson indices $β= 1,2$ and 4, and also to the spectral density in the corresponding $β$-ensemble w…
We consider the circular unitary ensemble with a Fisher-Hartwig singularity of both jump type and root type at $z=1$. A rescaling of the ensemble at the Fisher-Hartwig singularity leads to the confluent hypergeometric kernel. By studying the asymptotics of the Toeplitz determinants, we show that the probability of there being no eigenvalues in a symmetric arc about the singularity on the unit circle for a random matrix in the ensemble can be explicitly evaluated via an integral of the Hamiltonian of the coupled Painlevé V system in dimension four. This leads to a Painlevé-type representation o…
The aim of this paper is to present a systematic method for computing moments of matrix elements taken from circular orthogonal ensembles (COE). The formula is given as a sum of Weingarten functions for orthogonal groups but the technique for its proof involves Weingarten calculus for unitary groups. As an application, explicit expressions for the moments of a single matrix element of a COE matrix are given.
We study limiting distribution of pair counting statistics of the form $ \sum_{1\leq i\neq j\leq N} f(L_N\*(θ_i-θ_j))$ for the circular $β$-ensemble (C$β$E) of random matrices for sufficiently smooth test function $f$ and $L_N=O(N).$ For $β=2$ and $L_N=N$ our results are inspired by a classical result of Montgomery on pair correlation of zeros of Riemann zeta function.
We describe an ensemble of (sparse) random matrices whose eigenvalues follow the Gibbs distribution for n particles of the Coulomb gas on the unit circle at inverse temperature beta. Our approach combines elements from the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with ideas from recent work of Dumitriu and Edelman. In particular, we resolve a question left open by them: find a tri-diagonal model for the Jacobi ensemble.
We study the effect of highly oscillatory potentials to the eigenvalues of a random matrix. Consider the circular unitary ensembles with an external potential which is periodic with the period comparable to the average spacing of the eigenvalues. We show that in this case the density of states is periodic and does not converge in the large matrix limit, but the local correlation functions converge to some simple combinations of the sine kernel and the potential. We evaluate the correlation functions exactly and also asymptotically.
We study CMV matrices (a discrete one-dimensional Dirac-type operator) with random decaying coefficients. Under mild assumptions we identify the local eigenvalue statistics in the natural scaling limit. For rapidly decreasing coefficients, the eigenvalues have rigid spacing (like the numerals on a clock); in the case of slow decrease, the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Poisson process. For a certain critical rate of decay we obtain the circular beta ensembles of random matrix theory. The temperature β^{-1} appears as the square of the coupling constant.
This paper gives a rigorous proof of a conjectured statistical self-similarity property of the eigenvalues random matrices from the Circular Unitary Ensemble. We consider on the one hand the eigenvalues of an $n \times n$ CUE matrix, and on the other hand those eigenvalues $e^{iϕ}$ of an $mn \times mn$ CUE matrix with $|ϕ| \le π/ m$, rescaled to fill the unit circle. We show that for a large range of mesoscopic scales, these collections of points are statistically indistinguishable for large $n$. The proof is based on a comparison theorem for determinantal point processes which may be of indep…
We prove rates of convergence for the circular law for the complex Ginibre ensemble. Specifically, we bound the expected $L_p$-Wasserstein distance between the empirical spectral measure of the normalized complex Ginibre ensemble and the uniform measure on the unit disc, both in expectation and almost surely. For $1 \le p \le 2$, the bounds are of the order $n^{-1/4}$, up to logarithmic factors.
According to Dyson's three fold way, from the viewpoint of global time reversal symmetry there are three circular ensembles of unitary random matrices relevant to the study of chaotic spectra in quantum mechanics. These are the circular orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, denoted COE, CUE and CSE respectively. For each of these three ensembles and their thinned versions, whereby each eigenvalue is deleted independently with probability $1-ξ$, we take up the problem of calculating the first two terms in the scaled large $N$ expansion of the spacing distributions. It is well known that…
We construct a hierarchy of loop equations for invariant circular ensembles. These are valid for general classes of potentials and for arbitrary inverse temperatures $ {\rm Re}\,β>0 $ and number of eigenvalues $ N $. Using matching arguments for the resolvent functions of linear statistics $ f(ζ)=(ζ+z)/(ζ-z) $ in a particular asymptotic regime, the global regime, we systematically develop the corresponding large $ N $ expansion and apply this solution scheme to the Dyson circular ensemble. Currently we can compute the second resolvent function to ten orders in this expansion and also its gener…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of mesoscopic fluctuations for the thinned Circular Unitary Ensemble. The effect of thinning is that the eigenvalues start to decorrelate. The decorrelation is stronger on the larger scales than on the smaller scales. We investigate this behavior by studying mesoscopic linear statistics. There are two regimes depending on the scale parameter and the thinning parameter. In one regime we obtain a CLT of a classical type and in the other regime we retrieve the CLT for CUE. The two regimes are separated by a critical line. On the critical line the lim…
We consider the symplectic induced Ginibre process, which is a Pfaffian point process on the plane. Let $N$ be the number of points. We focus on the almost-circular regime where most of the points lie in a thin annulus $\mathcal{S}_{N}$ of width $O(\frac{1}{N})$ as $N \to \infty$. Our main results are the scaling limits of all correlation functions near the real axis, and also away from the real axis. Near the real axis, the limiting correlation functions are Pfaffians with a new correlation kernel, which interpolates the limiting kernels in the bulk of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble and of t…
We give a hyperpfaffian formulation of partition functions and ensemble averages for Hermitian and circular ensembles when L is an arbitrary integer and β=L^2 and when L is an odd integer and β=L^2 +1.
The problem of convergence of the joint moments, which depend on two parameters $s$ and $h$, of the characteristic polynomial of a random Haar-distributed unitary matrix and its derivative, as the matrix size goes to infinity, has been studied for two decades, beginning with the thesis of Hughes. Recently, Forrester considered the analogous problem for the Circular $β$-Ensemble (C$β$E) characteristic polynomial, proved convergence and obtained an explicit combinatorial formula for the limit for integer $s$ and complex $h$. In this paper we consider this problem for a generalisation of the C$β$…
Stochastic Loewner Evolution (SLE_kappa) has been introduced as a description of the continuum limit of cluster boundaries in two-dimensional critical systems. We show that the problem of N radial SLEs in the unit disc is equivalent to Dyson's Brownian motion on the boundary of the disc, with parameter beta=4/kappa. As a result various equilibrium critical models give realisations of circular ensembles with beta different from the classical values of 1,2 and 4 which correspond to symmetry classes of random U(N) matrices. Some of the bulk critical exponents are related to the spectrum of the as…
This work computes the asymptotics of the non-integer moments of the logarithmic derivative of characteristic polynomials of matrices from the $SO(2N+1)$ ensemble. It follows from work of Alvarez and Snaith who computed the asymptotics of the integer moments of the same statistic over both $SO(N)$ ensembles as well as the $USp(2N)$ ensemble.
We apply the operation of random independent thinning on the eigenvalues of $n\times n$ Haar distributed unitary random matrices. We study gap probabilities for the thinned eigenvalues, and we study the statistics of the eigenvalues of random unitary matrices which are conditioned such that there are no thinned eigenvalues on a given arc of the unit circle. Various probabilistic quantities can be expressed in terms of Toeplitz determinants and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, and we use these expressions to obtain asymptotics as $n\to\infty$.
The eigenvalue probability density functions of the classical random matrix ensembles have a well known analogy with the one component log-gas at the special couplings β= 1,2 and 4. It has been known for some time that there is an exactly solvable two-component log-potential plasma which interpolates between the β=1 and 4 circular ensemble, and an exactly solvable two-component generalized plasma which interpolates between β= 2 and 4 circular ensemble. We extend known exact results relating to the latter --- for the free energy and one and two-point correlations --- by giving the general (k_1+…

We study the power spectrum of eigen-angles of random matrices drawn from the circular unitary ensemble ${\rm CUE}(N)$ and show that it can be evaluated in terms of either a Fredholm determinant, or a Toeplitz determinant, or a sixth Painlevé function. In the limit of infinite-dimensional matrices, $N\rightarrow\infty$, we derive a ${\it\, concise\,}$ parameter-free formula for the power spectrum which involves a fifth Painlevé transcendent and interpret it in terms of the ${\rm Sine}_2$ determinantal random point field. Further, we discuss a universality of the predicted power spectrum law an…
In the present work we show that the joint probability distribution of the eigenvalues can be expressed in terms of a differential operator acting on the distribution of some other matrix quantities. Those quantities might be the diagonal or pseudo-diagonal entries as it is the case for Hermitian matrices. These representations are called derivative principles. We show them for the additive spaces of the Hermitian, Hermitian antisymmetric, Hermitian anti-self-dual, and complex rectangular matrices as well as for the two multiplicative matrix spaces of the positive definite Hermitian matrices a…
Using the spectral theory of unitary operators and the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, we propose a simple matrix model for the following circular analogue of the Jacobi ensemble: $$c_{δ,β}^{(n)} \prod_{1\leq k<l\leq n}| e^{\iiθ_k}-e^{\iiθ_l}|^β\prod_{j=1}^{n}(1-e^{-\iiθ_j})^δ (1-e^{\iiθ_j})^{\overlineδ} $$ with $\Re δ> -1/2$. If $e$ is a cyclic vector for a unitary $n\times n$ matrix $U$, the spectral measure of the pair $(U,e)$ is well parameterized by its Verblunsky coefficients $(α_0, ..., α_{n-1})$. We introduce here a deformation $(γ_0, >..., γ_{n-1})$ of these coeff…
Additivity violation of minimum output entropy, which shows non-classical properties in quantum communication, had been proved in most cases for random quantum channels defined by Haar-distributed unitary matrices. In this paper, we investigate random completely positive maps made of Gaussian Unitary Ensembles and Ginibre Ensembles regarding this matter. Using semi-circular systems and circular systems of free probability, we not only show the multiplicativity violation of maximum output norms in the asymptotic regimes but also prove the additivity violation via Haagerup inequality for a new c…
We consider the macroscopic large N limit of the Circular beta-Ensemble at high temperature, and its weighted version as well, in the regime where the inverse temperature scales as beta/N for some parameter beta>0. More precisely, in the large N limit, the equilibrium measure of this particle system is described as the unique minimizer of a functional which interpolates between the relative entropy (beta=0) and the weighted logarithmic energy (beta=\infty). More precisely, we provide subGaussian concentration estimates in the W1 metric for the deviations of the empirical measure to this equili…
H. Widom derived formulae expressing correlation functions of orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices in terms of orthogonal polynomials (H. Widom. J. Stat. Phys. 94, (1999) 347-363). We obtain similar results for discrete ensembles whose weights have rational discrete logarithmic derivatives, and compute explicitly correlation kernels associated to the classical Meixner and Charlier orthogonal polynomials.
The circular and Jacobi ensembles of random matrices have their eigenvalue support on the unit circle of the complex plane and the interval $(0,1)$ of the real line respectively. The averaged value of the modulus of the corresponding characteristic polynomial raised to the power $2 μ$ diverges, for $2μ\le -1$, at points approaching the eigenvalue support. Using the theory of generalized hypergeometric functions based on Jack polynomials, the functional form of the leading asymptotic behaviour is established rigorously. In the circular ensemble case this confirms a conjecture of Berry and Keati…
We show that it is possible to consistently describe dynamical systems, whose equations of motion are of degree higher than two, in the microcanonical ensemble, even if the higher derivatives aren't coordinate artifacts. Higher time derivatives imply that there are more than one Hamiltonians, conserved quantities due to time translation invariance, and, if the volume in phase space, defined by their intersection, is compact, microcanonical averages can be defined and there isn't any instability, in the sense of Ostrogradsky, even though each Hamiltonian, individually, may define a non-compact …
We consider the Hankel determinant generated by the Gaussian weight with two jump discontinuities. Utilizing the results of [C. Min and Y. Chen, Math. Meth. Appl. Sci. {\bf 42} (2019), 301--321] where a second order PDE was deduced for the log derivative of the Hankel determinant by using the ladder operators adapted to orthogonal polynomials, we derive the coupled Painlevé IV system which was established in [X. Wu and S. Xu, arXiv: 2002.11240v2] by a study of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for orthogonal polynomials. Under double scaling, we show that, as $n\rightarrow\infty$, the log derivative…
We investigate eigenvalue moments of matrices from Circular Orthogonal Ensemble multiplicatively perturbed by a permutation matrix. More precisely we investigate variance of the sum of the eigenvalues raised to power $k$, for arbitrary but fixed $k$ and in the limit of large matrix size. We find that when the permutation defining the perturbed ensemble has only long cycles, the answer is universal and approaches the corresponding moment of the Circular Unitary Ensemble with a particularly fast rate: the error is of order $1/N^3$ and the terms of orders $1/N$ and $1/N^2$ disappear due to cancel…
Consider Ginibre's ensemble of $N \times N$ non-Hermitian random matrices in which all entries are independent complex Gaussians of mean zero and variance $\frac{1}{N}$. As $N \uparrow \infty$ the normalized counting measure of the eigenvalues converges to the uniform measure on the unit disk in the complex plane. In this note we describe fluctuations about this {\em Circular Law}. First we obtain finite $N$ formulas for the covariance of certain linear statistics of the eigenvalues. Asymptotics of these objects coupled with a theorem of Costin and Lebowitz then result in central limit theorem…
We consider random non-normal matrices constructed by removing one row and column from samples from Dyson's circular ensembles or samples from the classical compact groups. We develop sparse matrix models whose spectral measures match these ensembles. This allows us to compute the joint law of the eigenvalues, which have a natural interpretation as resonances for open quantum systems or as electrostatic charges located in a dielectric medium. Our methods allow us to consider all values of $β>0$, not merely $β=1,2,4$.
We show in this paper that after proper scalings, the characteristic polynomial of a random unitary matrix converges almost surely to a random analytic function whose zeros, which are on the real line, form a determinantal point process with sine kernel. Our scaling is performed at the so-called "microscopic" level, that is we consider the characteristic polynomial at points which are of order $1/n$ distant. We prove this in the framework of virtual isometries to circumvent the fact that the rescaled characteristic polynomial does not even have a moment of order one, hence making the classical…
We study the Circular and Jacobi $β$-Ensembles and prove Gaussian fluctuations for the number of points in one or more intervals in the macroscopic scaling limit.
We show that the distribution function of the first particle in a discrete orthogonal polynomial ensemble can be obtained through a certain recurrence procedure, if the (difference or q-) log-derivative of the weight function is rational. In a number of classical special cases the recurrence procedure is equivalent to the difference and q-Painleve equations of chao-dyn/9507010, [Sakai]. Our approach is based on the formalism of discrete integrable operators and discrete Riemann--Hilbert problems developed in math.CO/9912093, math-ph/0111008.
