Previous works have considered the leading correction term to the scaled limit of various correlation functions and distributions for classical random matrix ensembles and their $β$ generalisations at the hard and soft edge. It has been found that the functional form of this correction is given by a derivative operation applied to the leading term. In the present work we compute the leading correction term of the correlation kernel at the spectrum singularity for the circular Jacobi ensemble with Dyson indices $β= 1,2$ and 4, and also to the spectral density in the corresponding $β$-ensemble with $β$ even. The former requires an analysis involving the Routh-Romanovski polynomials, while the latter is based on multidimensional integral formulas for generalised hypergeometric series based on Jack polynomials. In all cases this correction term is found to be related to the leading term by a derivative operation.
We construct a class of generalized phase coherent states indexed by points of the unit circle and depending on three positive parameters "gamma","alpha" and "epsilon" by replacing the labelling coefficients of the canonical coherent states by circular Jacobi polynomials with parameter "gamma". The special case "gamma" = 0 corresponds to well known phase coherent phase states. The constructed states are superposition of eigenstates of a one-parameter pseudoharmonic oscillator depending on "alpha" and solve the identity of the state Hilbert space at the limit "epsilon"->0+. Closed form for thei…
In the hard edge scaling limit of the Jacobi unitary ensemble generated by the weight $x^α(1-x)^β,~x\in[0,1],~α,β>0$, the probability that all eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices from this ensemble lie in the interval $[t,1]$ is given by the Fredholm determinant of the Bessel kernel. We derive the constant in the asymptotics of this Bessel-kernel determinant. A specialization of the results gives the constant in the asymptotics of the probability that the interval $(-a,a),a>0,$ is free of eigenvalues in the Jacobi unitary ensemble with the symmetric weight $(1-x^2)^β, x\in[-1,1]$.
We analyze the eigenvalue density for the Laguerre and Jacobi $β$-ensembles in the cases that the corresponding exponents are extensive. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic expansion up to terms $o(1)$, in the large deviation regime outside the limiting interval of support. As found in recent studies of the large deviation density for the Gaussian $β$-ensemble, and Laguerre $β$-ensemble with fixed exponent, there is a scaling from this asymptotic expansion to the right tail asymptotics for the distribution of the largest eigenvalue at the soft edge.
In one dimensional transport problems the scattering matrix $S$ is decomposed into a block structure corresponding to reflection and transmission matrices at the two ends. For $S$ a random unitary matrix, the singular value probability distribution function of these blocks is calculated. The same is done when $S$ is constrained to be symmetric, or to be self dual quaternion real, or when $S$ has real elements, or has real quaternion elements. Three methods are used: metric forms; a variant of the Ingham-Seigel matrix integral; and a theorem specifying the Jacobi random matrix ensemble in terms…
In this paper, we address a class of problems in unitary ensembles. Specifically, we study the probability that a gap symmetric about 0, i.e. $(-a,a)$ is found in the Gaussian unitary ensembles (GUE) and the Jacobi unitary ensembles (JUE) (where in the JUE, we take the parameters $α=β$). By exploiting the even parity of the weight, a doubling of the interval to $(a^2,\infty)$ for the GUE, and $(a^2,1)$, for the (symmetric) JUE, shows that the gap probabilities maybe determined as the product of the smallest eigenvalue distributions of the LUE with parameter $α=-1/2,$ and $α=1/2$ and the (shift…
In this paper, we focus on the relationship between the fifth Painlevé equation and a Jacobi weight perturbed with random singularities, \begin{equation*} w(z)=\left(1-z^2\right)^α{\rm e}^{-\frac{t}{z^2-k^2}},~~~z,k\in[-1,1],~α,t>0. \end{equation*} By using the ladder operator approach, we obtain that an auxiliary quantity $R_n(t)$, which is closely related to the recurrence coefficients of monic polynomials orthogonal with $w(z)$, satisfies a particular Painlevé V equation.
The $β$-ensembles of random matrix theory with classical weights have many special properties. One is that the loop equations specifying the resolvent and corresponding multipoint correlators permit a derivation at general order of the correlator via Aomoto's method from the theory of the Selberg integral. We use Aomoto's method to derive the full hierarchy of loop equations for Laguerre and Jacobi $β$ ensembles, and use these to systematically construct the explicit form of the $1/N$ expansion at low orders. This allows us to give the explicit form of corrections to the global density, and al…
This paper studies the Hankel determinant generated by a perturbed Jacobi weight, which is closely related to the largest and smallest eigenvalue distribution of the degenerate Jacobi unitary ensemble. By using the ladder operator approach for the orthogonal polynomials, we find that the logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant satisfies a nonlinear second-order differential equation, which turns out to be the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ$-form of the Painlevé VI equation by a translation transformation. We also show that, after a suitable double scaling, the differential equation is reduced …
The eigenvalue correlations of random matrices from the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble have a known asymptotic behavior as their size tends to infinity. In the bulk of the spectrum the behavior is described in terms of the sine kernel, and at the edge in terms of the Bessel kernel. We will prove that this behavior persists for the Modified Jacobi Unitary Ensemble. This generalization of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble is associated with the modified Jacobi weight w(x)=(1-x)^α(1+x)^βh(x) where the extra factor h is assumed to be real analytic and strictly positive on [-1,1]. We use the connection with the…
In this paper, we study the gap probability problem of the (symmetric) Jacobi unitary ensemble of Hermitian random matrices, namely the probability that the interval $(-a,a)\:(0<a<1)$ is free of eigenvalues. Using the ladder operator technique for orthogonal polynomials and the associated supplementary conditions, we derive three quantities instrumental in the gap probability, denoted by $H_{n}(a)$, $R_{n}(a)$ and $r_{n}(a)$. We find that each one satisfies a second order differential equation. We show that after a double scaling, the large second order differential equation in the variable $a…
For a beta-Jacobi ensemble determined by parameters a_1, a_2 and n, under the restriction that the three parameters go to infinity with n and a_1 being of small orders of a_2, we obtain both the bulk and the edge scaling limits. In particular, we derive the asymptotic distributions for the largest and the smallest eigenvalues, the Central Limit Theorems of the eigenvalues, and the limiting distributions of the empirical distributions of the eigenvalues.

A superposition of a matrix ensemble refers to the ensemble constructed from two independent copies of the original, while a decimation refers to the formation of a new ensemble by observing only every second eigenvalue. In the cases of the classical matrix ensembles with orthogonal symmetry, it is known that forming superpositions and decimations gives rise to classical matrix ensembles with unitary and symplectic symmetry. The basic identities expressing these facts can be extended to include a parameter, which in turn provides us with probability density functions which we take as the defin…
We consider the product of two independent randomly rotated projectors. The square of its radial part turns out to be distributed as a Jacobi ensemble. We study its global and local properties in the large dimension scaling relevant to free probability theory. We establish asymptotics for one point and two point correlation functions, as well as properties of largest and smallest eigenvalues.
We study Muttalib--Borodin ensembles --- particular eigenvalue PDFs on the half-line --- with classical weights, i.e. Laguerre, Jacobi or Jacobi prime. We show how the theory of the Selberg integral, involving also Jack and Schur polynomials, naturally leads to a multi-parameter generalisation of these particular Muttalib--Borodin ensembles, and also to the explicit form of underlying biorthogonal polynomials of a single variable. A suitable generalisation of the original definition of the Muttalib--Borodin ensemble allows for negative eigenvalues. In the cases of generalised Gaussian, symmetr…
We study the linear statistics of the circular $β$-ensemble with a Stein's method argument, where the exchangeable pair is generated through circular Dyson Brownian motion. This generalizes previous results obtained in such a way for the CUE and provides a novel approach for studying linear statistics of $β$-ensembles. This approach allows studying simultaneously a collection of linear statistics whose number grows with the dimension of the ensemble. Also this approach requires estimating only low order moments of the linear statistics.
We express the topological expansion of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble in terms of triple monotone Hurwitz numbers. This completes the combinatorial interpretation of the topological expansion of the classical unitary invariant matrix ensembles. We also provide effective formulae for generating functions of multipoint correlators of the Jacobi Unitary Ensemble in terms of Wilson polynomials, generalizing the known relations between one point correlators and Wilson polynomials.
We study the Jacobi unitary ensemble perturbed by an algebraic singularity at $t>1$. For fixed $t$, this is the modified Jacobi ensemble studied by Kuijlaars {\it{et al.}} The main focus here, however, is the case when the algebraic singularity approaches the hard edge, namely $t\to 1^+$. In the double scaling limit case when $t- 1$ is of the order of magnitude of $1/n^2$, $n$ being the size of the matrix, the eigenvalue correlation kernel is shown to have a new limiting kernel at the hard edge $1$, described by the $ψ$-functions for a certain second-order nonlinear equation. The equation is r…
We calculate the $k$-point generating function of the correlated Jacobi ensemble using supersymmetric methods. We use the result for complex matrices for $k=1$ to derive a closed-form expression for eigenvalue density. For real matrices we obtain the density in terms of a twofold integral that we evaluate numerically. For both expressions we find agreement when comparing with Monte Carlo simulations. Relations between these quantities for the Jacobi and the Cauchy-Lorentz ensemble are derived.
Under the Kolmogorov--Smirnov metric, an upper bound on the rate of convergence to the Gaussian distribution is obtained for linear statistics of the matrix ensembles in the case of the Gaussian, Laguerre, and Jacobi weights. The main lemma gives an estimate for the characteristic functions of the linear statistics; this estimate is uniform over the growing interval. The proof of the lemma relies on the Riemann--Hilbert approach.
We outline a relation between the densities for the $β$-ensembles with respect to the Jacobi weight $(1-x)^a(1+x)^b$ supported on the interval $(-1,1)$ and the Cauchy weight $(1-\mathrm{i}x)^η(1+\mathrm{i}x)^{\barη}$ by appropriate analytic continuation. This has the consequence of implying that the latter density satisfies a linear differential equation of degree three for $β=2$, and of degree five for $β=1$ and $4$, analogues of which are already known for the Jacobi weight $x^a(1-x)^b$ supported on $(0,1)$. We concentrate on the case $a=b$ (Jacobi weight on $(-1,1)$) and $η$ real (Cauchy we…
We present two complementary methods, each applicable in a different range, to evaluate the distribution of the lowest eigenvalue of random matrices in a Jacobi ensemble. The first method solves an associated Painleve VI nonlinear differential equation numerically, with suitable initial conditions that we determine. The second method proceeds via constructing the power-series expansion of the Painleve VI function. Our results are applied in a forthcoming paper in which we model the distribution of the first zero above the central point of elliptic curve L-function families of finite conductor …
Inspired by Aomoto's $q$-Selberg integral, the orthogonal ensemble in the exponential lattice is considered in this paper. By introducing a skew symmetric kernel, the configuration space of this ensemble is constructed to be symmetric and thus, corresponding skew inner product, skew orthogonal polynomials as well as correlation functions are explicitly formulated. Examples including Al-Salam & Carlitz, $q$-Laguerre, little $q$-Jacobi and big $q$-Jacobi cases are considered.
Using the spectral theory of unitary operators and the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, we propose a simple matrix model for the following circular analogue of the Jacobi ensemble: $$c_{δ,β}^{(n)} \prod_{1\leq k<l\leq n}| e^{\iiθ_k}-e^{\iiθ_l}|^β\prod_{j=1}^{n}(1-e^{-\iiθ_j})^δ (1-e^{\iiθ_j})^{\overlineδ} $$ with $\Re δ> -1/2$. If $e$ is a cyclic vector for a unitary $n\times n$ matrix $U$, the spectral measure of the pair $(U,e)$ is well parameterized by its Verblunsky coefficients $(α_0, ..., α_{n-1})$. We introduce here a deformation $(γ_0, >..., γ_{n-1})$ of these coeff…
We consider the circular unitary ensemble with a Fisher-Hartwig singularity of both jump type and root type at $z=1$. A rescaling of the ensemble at the Fisher-Hartwig singularity leads to the confluent hypergeometric kernel. By studying the asymptotics of the Toeplitz determinants, we show that the probability of there being no eigenvalues in a symmetric arc about the singularity on the unit circle for a random matrix in the ensemble can be explicitly evaluated via an integral of the Hamiltonian of the coupled Painlevé V system in dimension four. This leads to a Painlevé-type representation o…
We analyze the stability of the geodesic curves in the geometry of the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger black hole, describing the space time of a charged black hole in the low energy limit of the string theory. The stability analysis is performed by using both the linear (Lyapunov) stability method, as well as the notion of Jacobi stability, based on the Kosambi-Cartan-Chern theory. Brief reviews of the two stability methods are also presented. After obtaining the geodesic equations in spherical symmetry, we reformulate them as a two-dimensional dynamic system. The Jacobi stability…
The problem of convergence of the joint moments, which depend on two parameters $s$ and $h$, of the characteristic polynomial of a random Haar-distributed unitary matrix and its derivative, as the matrix size goes to infinity, has been studied for two decades, beginning with the thesis of Hughes. Recently, Forrester considered the analogous problem for the Circular $β$-Ensemble (C$β$E) characteristic polynomial, proved convergence and obtained an explicit combinatorial formula for the limit for integer $s$ and complex $h$. In this paper we consider this problem for a generalisation of the C$β$…
The probabilities for gaps in the eigenvalue spectrum of the finite dimension $ N \times N $ random matrix Hermite and Jacobi unitary ensembles on some single and disconnected double intervals are found. These are cases where a reflection symmetry exists and the probability factors into two other related probabilities, defined on single intervals. Our investigation uses the system of partial differential equations arising from the Fredholm determinant expression for the gap probability and the differential-recurrence equations satisfied by Hermite and Jacobi orthogonal polynomials. In our stud…
The aim of this paper is to present a systematic method for computing moments of matrix elements taken from circular orthogonal ensembles (COE). The formula is given as a sum of Weingarten functions for orthogonal groups but the technique for its proof involves Weingarten calculus for unitary groups. As an application, explicit expressions for the moments of a single matrix element of a COE matrix are given.
Consider Jacobi random matrix ensembles with the distributions $$c_{k_1,k_2,k_3}\prod_{1\leq i< j \leq N}\left(x_j-x_i\right)^{k_3}\prod_{i=1}^N \left(1-x_i\right)^{\frac{k_1+k_2}{2}-\frac{1}{2}}\left(1+x_i\right)^{\frac{k_2}{2}-\frac{1}{2}} dx$$ of the eigenvalues on the alcoves $$A:=\{x\in\mathbb R^N| \> -1\leq x_1\le ...\le x_N\leq 1\}.$$ For $(k_1,k_2,k_3)=κ\cdot (a,b,1)$ with $a,b>0$ fixed, we derive a central limit theorem for the distributions above for $κ\to\infty$. The drift and the inverse of the limit covariance matrix are expressed in terms of the zeros of classical Jacobi polynomi…
We study limiting distribution of pair counting statistics of the form $ \sum_{1\leq i\neq j\leq N} f(L_N\*(θ_i-θ_j))$ for the circular $β$-ensemble (C$β$E) of random matrices for sufficiently smooth test function $f$ and $L_N=O(N).$ For $β=2$ and $L_N=N$ our results are inspired by a classical result of Montgomery on pair correlation of zeros of Riemann zeta function.
We describe an ensemble of (sparse) random matrices whose eigenvalues follow the Gibbs distribution for n particles of the Coulomb gas on the unit circle at inverse temperature beta. Our approach combines elements from the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with ideas from recent work of Dumitriu and Edelman. In particular, we resolve a question left open by them: find a tri-diagonal model for the Jacobi ensemble.
We study the effect of highly oscillatory potentials to the eigenvalues of a random matrix. Consider the circular unitary ensembles with an external potential which is periodic with the period comparable to the average spacing of the eigenvalues. We show that in this case the density of states is periodic and does not converge in the large matrix limit, but the local correlation functions converge to some simple combinations of the sine kernel and the potential. We evaluate the correlation functions exactly and also asymptotically.
We study CMV matrices (a discrete one-dimensional Dirac-type operator) with random decaying coefficients. Under mild assumptions we identify the local eigenvalue statistics in the natural scaling limit. For rapidly decreasing coefficients, the eigenvalues have rigid spacing (like the numerals on a clock); in the case of slow decrease, the eigenvalues are distributed according to a Poisson process. For a certain critical rate of decay we obtain the circular beta ensembles of random matrix theory. The temperature β^{-1} appears as the square of the coupling constant.
The theory of Pólya ensembles of positive definite random matrices provides structural formulas for the corresponding biorthogonal pair, and correlation kernel, which are well suited to computing the hard edge large $N$ asymptotics. Such an analysis is carried out for products of Laguerre ensembles, the Laguerre Muttalib-Borodin ensemble, and products of Laguerre ensembles and their inverses. The latter includes as a special case the Jacobi unitary ensemble. In each case the hard edge scaled kernel permits an expansion in powers of $1/N$, with the leading term given in a structured form involv…
Let $\mathbf{W}_1$ and $\mathbf{W}_2$ be independent $n\times n$ complex central Wishart matrices with $m_1$ and $m_2$ degrees of freedom respectively. This paper is concerned with the extreme eigenvalue distributions of double-Wishart matrices $(\mathbf{W}_1+\mathbf{W}_2)^{-1}\mathbf{W}_1$, which are analogous to those of F matrices ${\bf W}_1 {\bf W}_2^{-1}$ and those of the Jacobi unitary ensemble (JUE). Defining $α_1=m_1-n$ and $α_2=m_2-n$, we derive new exact distribution formulas in terms of $(α_1+α_2)$-dimensional matrix determinants, with elements involving derivatives of Legendre poly…
This paper gives a rigorous proof of a conjectured statistical self-similarity property of the eigenvalues random matrices from the Circular Unitary Ensemble. We consider on the one hand the eigenvalues of an $n \times n$ CUE matrix, and on the other hand those eigenvalues $e^{iϕ}$ of an $mn \times mn$ CUE matrix with $|ϕ| \le π/ m$, rescaled to fill the unit circle. We show that for a large range of mesoscopic scales, these collections of points are statistically indistinguishable for large $n$. The proof is based on a comparison theorem for determinantal point processes which may be of indep…
We prove rates of convergence for the circular law for the complex Ginibre ensemble. Specifically, we bound the expected $L_p$-Wasserstein distance between the empirical spectral measure of the normalized complex Ginibre ensemble and the uniform measure on the unit disc, both in expectation and almost surely. For $1 \le p \le 2$, the bounds are of the order $n^{-1/4}$, up to logarithmic factors.
The problem of calculating the scaled limit of the joint moments of the characteristic polynomial, and the derivative of the characteristic polynomial, for matrices from the unitary group with Haar measure first arose in studies relating to the Riemann zeta function in the thesis of Hughes. Subsequently, Winn showed that these joint moments can equivalently be written as the moments for the distribution of the trace in the Cauchy unitary ensemble, and furthermore relate to certain hypergeometric functions based on Schur polynomials, which enabled explicit computations. We give a $β$-generalisa…
According to Dyson's three fold way, from the viewpoint of global time reversal symmetry there are three circular ensembles of unitary random matrices relevant to the study of chaotic spectra in quantum mechanics. These are the circular orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, denoted COE, CUE and CSE respectively. For each of these three ensembles and their thinned versions, whereby each eigenvalue is deleted independently with probability $1-ξ$, we take up the problem of calculating the first two terms in the scaled large $N$ expansion of the spacing distributions. It is well known that…
We construct a hierarchy of loop equations for invariant circular ensembles. These are valid for general classes of potentials and for arbitrary inverse temperatures $ {\rm Re}\,β>0 $ and number of eigenvalues $ N $. Using matching arguments for the resolvent functions of linear statistics $ f(ζ)=(ζ+z)/(ζ-z) $ in a particular asymptotic regime, the global regime, we systematically develop the corresponding large $ N $ expansion and apply this solution scheme to the Dyson circular ensemble. Currently we can compute the second resolvent function to ten orders in this expansion and also its gener…
We collect explicit and user-friendly expressions for one-point densities of the real eigenvalues $\{λ_i\}$ of $N\times N$ Wishart-Laguerre and Jacobi random matrices with orthogonal, unitary and symplectic symmetry. Using these formulae, we compute integer moments $τ_n=<\sum_{i=1}^Nλ_i^n>$ for all symmetry classes without any large $N$ approximation. In particular, our results provide exact expressions for moments of transmission eigenvalues in chaotic cavities with time-reversal or spin-flip symmetry and supporting a finite and arbitrary number of electronic channels in the two incoming lead…
We prove that the fluctuations of mesocopic linear statistics for orthogonal polynomial ensembles are universal in the sense that two measures with asymptotic recurrence coefficients have the same asymptotic mesoscopic fluctuations (under an additional assumption on the local regularity of one of the measures). The convergence rate of the recurrence coefficients determines the range of scales on which the limiting fluctuations are identical. Our main tool is an analysis of the Green's function for the associated Jacobi matrices. As a particular consequence we obtain a Central Limit Theorem for…
We prove that the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field describes the asymptotics of global fluctuations of a multilevel extension of the general beta Jacobi random matrix ensembles. Our approach is based on the connection of the Jacobi ensembles to a degeneration of the Macdonald processes that parallels the degeneration of the Macdonald polynomials to to the Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions (of type A). We also discuss the beta goes to infinity limit.
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of mesoscopic fluctuations for the thinned Circular Unitary Ensemble. The effect of thinning is that the eigenvalues start to decorrelate. The decorrelation is stronger on the larger scales than on the smaller scales. We investigate this behavior by studying mesoscopic linear statistics. There are two regimes depending on the scale parameter and the thinning parameter. In one regime we obtain a CLT of a classical type and in the other regime we retrieve the CLT for CUE. The two regimes are separated by a critical line. On the critical line the lim…
