Quantum Gravity is expected to resolve the singularities of classical General Relativity. Based on destructive interference of singular spacetime-configurations in the path integral, we find that higher-order curvature terms may allow to resolve black-hole singularities both in the spherically symmetric and axisymmetric case. In contrast, the Einstein action does not provide a dynamical mechanism for singularity-resolution through destructive interference of these configurations.
We extend the scope of the Raychaudhuri-Komar singularity theorem of General Relativity to affine theories of gravity with and without torsion. We first generalize the existing focusing theorems using time-like and null congruences of curves which are hypersurface orthogonal, showing how the presence of torsion affects the formation of focal points in Lorentzian manifolds. Considering the energy conservation on a given affine gravity theory, we prove new singularity theorems for accelerated curves in the cases of Lorentzian manifolds containing perfect fluids or scalar field matter sources.
We develop area and volume comparison theorems for the evolution of spacelike, acausal, causally complete hypersurfaces in Lorentzian manifolds, where one has a lower bound on the Ricci tensor along timelike curves, and an upper bound on the mean curvature of the hypersurface. Using these results, we give a new proof of Hawking's singularity theorem.
The Lorentzian Hamiltonian constraint is solved for isotropic loop quantum cosmology coupled to a massless scalar field. As in the Euclidean case, the discreteness of quantum geometry removes the classical singularity from the quantum Friedmann models. In spite of the absence of the classical singularity, a modified DeWitt initial condition is incompatible with a late-time smooth behavior. Further, the smooth behavior is recovered only for positive or negatives times but not both. An important feature, which is shared with the Euclidean case, is a minimal initial energy of the order of the Pla…
Continuing recent efforts in extending the classical singularity theorems of General Relativity to low regularity metrics, we give a complete proof of both the Hawking and the Penrose singularity theorem for $C^1$-Lorentzian metrics - a regularity where one still has existence but not uniqueness for solutions of the geodesic equation. The proofs make use of careful estimates of the curvature of approximating smooth metrics and certain stability properties of long existence times for causal geodesics. On the way we also prove that for globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a $C^1$-metric causal ge…
We give a short and simple proof that the Lorentzian 10j symbol, which forms a key part of the Barrett-Crane model of Lorentzian quantum gravity, is finite. The argument is very general, and applies to other integrals. For example, we show that the Lorentzian and Riemannian causal 10j symbols are finite, despite their singularities. Moreover, we show that integrals that arise in Cherrington's work are finite. Cherrington has shown that this implies that the Lorentzian partition function for a single triangulation is finite, even for degenerate triangulations. Finally, we also show how to use t…
Starting from the Hawking--Page solutions, we consider the corresponding Lorentzian cone metrics. These represent cone interior scale-invariant vacuum solutions, defined in the chronological past of the scaling origin. We extend the Lorentzian Hawking--Page solutions to the cone exterior region in the class of $(4+1)$-dimensional scale-invariant vacuum solutions with an $SO(3)\times U(1)$ isometry, using the Kaluza--Klein reduction and the methods of Christodoulou. We prove that each Lorentzian Hawking--Page solution has extensions with a null curvature singularity, extensions with a spacelike…
Recently, the Lorentzian path integral formulation using the Picard-Lefschetz theory has attracted much attention in quantum cosmology. In this paper, we analyze the tunneling amplitude in quantum mechanics by using the Lorentzian Picard-Lefschetz formulation and compare it with the WKB analysis of the conventional Schrödinger equation. We show that the Picard-Lefschetz Lorentzian formulation is consistent with the WKB approximation for wave-function and the Euclidean path integral formulation utilizing the solutions of the Euclidean constraint equation. We also consider some problems of this …
We study canonical quantization of a closed Euclidean universe with a cosmological constant and a massless scalar field. The closed Euclidean universe with an ordinary matter state can be matched at a finite radius only with the closed Lorentzian universe with the Wick-rotated exotic state. The exotic state provides the Lorentzian universe with a potential barrier extending from the cosmological singularity to the classical turning point and corresponding to the Euclidean geometry through the Wick-rotation, and avoid the singularity problem at the matching boundary. We find analytically the ap…
We study complex saddles of the Lorentzian path integral for 4D axion gravity and its dual description in terms of a 3-form flux, which include the Giddings-Strominger Euclidean wormhole. Transition amplitudes are computed using the Lorentzian path integral and with the help of Picard-Lefschetz theory. The number and nature of saddles is shown to qualitatively change in the presence of a bilocal operator that could arise, for example, as a result of considering higher-topology transitions. We also analyze the stability of the Giddings-Strominger wormhole in the 3-form picture, where we find th…
In two space-time dimensions, there is a theory of Lorentzian quantum gravity which can be defined by a rigorous, non-perturbative path integral and is inequivalent to the well-known theory of (Euclidean) quantum Liouville gravity. It has a number of appealing features: i) its quantum geometry is non-fractal, ii) it remains consistent when coupled to matter, even beyond the c=1 barrier, iii) it is closer to canonical quantization approaches than previous path-integral formulations, and iv) its construction generalizes to higher dimensions.
We extend both the Hawking-Penrose Theorem and its generalisation due to Galloway and Senovilla to Lorentzian metrics of regularity $C^1$. For metrics of such low regularity, two main obstacles have to be addressed. On the one hand, the Ricci tensor now is distributional, and on the other hand, unique solvability of the geodesic equation is lost. To deal with the first issue in a consistent way, we develop a theory of tensor distributions of finite order, which also provides a framework for the recent proofs of the theorems of Hawking and of Penrose for $C^1$-metrics [7]. For the second issue,…
In the early 80's S.-T. Yau posed the problem of establishing the rigidity of the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems. Approaches to this problem have involved the introduction of Lorentzian Busemann functions and the study of the geometry of their level sets - the horospheres. The regularity theory in the Lorentzian case is considerably more complicated and less complete than in the Riemannian case. In this paper we introduce a broad generalization of the notion of horosphere in Lorentzian geometry and take a completely different (and highly geometric) approach to regularity. These generaliz…
In the present paper we establish area and volume estimates for spacetimes satisfying the strong energy condition in terms of the area and the $L^n$-norm of the second fundamental form or the mean curvature of an initial Cauchy hypersurface. We believe that these estimates will lay some of the groundwork in establishing new convergence results for Cauchy developments $(M_j, g_j)$ of suitably converging initial data $(Σ_j ,h_j ,K_j )$.
A first step towards implementing a notion of coarse graining in an intrinsically Lorentzian, discrete quantum- gravity approach, namely causal set quantum gravity is taken. It makes use of an abstract notion of scale, based on counting the number of discrete elements. To that end, the space of actions for causal set quantum gravity is written in a matrix-model-like language, and a flow equation for the effective action of the model is derived from the path integral.
A well-defined regularized path integral for Lorentzian quantum gravity in three and four dimensions is constructed, given in terms of a sum over dynamically triangulated causal space-times. Each Lorentzian geometry and its associated action have a unique Wick rotation to the Euclidean sector. All space-time histories possess a distinguished notion of a discrete proper time. For finite lattice volume, the associated transfer matrix is self-adjoint and bounded. The reflection positivity of the model ensures the existence of a well-defined Hamiltonian. The degenerate geometric phases found previ…
We demonstrate that the positive frequency modes for a complex scalar field in a constant electric field (Schwinger modes), in three different gauges, can be represented as exact Lorentzian worldline path integral amplitudes. Although the mathematical forms of the mode functions differ in each gauge, we show that a simple prescription for Lorentzian worldlines' boundary conditions dispenses the Schwinger modes in all three gauges (that we considered) in a unified manner. Following that, using our formalism, we derive the exact Bogoliubov coefficients and, hence, the particle number, \textit{wi…
Imaginary time is often used in quantum tunnelling calculations. This article advocates a conceptually sounder alternative: complex lapse. In the ``3+1'' action for the Einstein gravitational field minimally coupled to a Klein-Gordon field, allowing the lapse function to be complex yields a complex action which generates both the usual Lorentzian theory and its Riemannian analogue, and in particular allows a change of signature between the two. The action and variational equations are manifestly well defined in the Hamiltonian representation, with the momentum fields consequently being complex…
The Raychaudhuri equation and its consequences for chronality are studied in the context of Finsler spacetimes. It is proved that the notable singularity theorems of Lorentzian geometry extend to the Finslerian domain. Indeed, so do the theorems by Hawking, Penrose, Hawking and Penrose, Geroch, Gannon, Tipler, or Kriele, but also the Topological Censorship theorem and so on. It is argued that the notable results in causality theory connected to achronal sets, future sets, domains of dependence, limit curve theorems, length functional, Lorentzian distance, geodesic connectedness, extend to the …
Recently there has been a surge of interest in studying Lorentzian quantum cosmology using Picard-Lefschetz methods. The present paper aims to explore the Lorentzian path-integral of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four spacetime dimensions with metric as the field variable. We employ mini-superspace approximation and study the variational problem exploring different boundary conditions. It is seen that for mixed boundary conditions non-trivial effects arise from Gauss-Bonnet sector of gravity leading to additional saddle points for lapse in some case. As an application of this we consider the No-boun…
Thermal partition functions for gravitational systems have traditionally been studied using Euclidean path integrals. But in Euclidean signature the gravitational action suffers from the conformal factor problem, which renders the action unbounded below. This makes it difficult to take the Euclidean formulation as fundamental. However, despite their familiar association with periodic imaginary time, thermal gravitational partition functions can also be described by real-time path integrals over contours defined by real Lorentzian metrics. The one caveat is that we should allow certain codimens…
For the construction of the Lorentzian path integral for gravity one faces two main questions: Firstly, what configurations to include, in particular whether to allow Lorentzian metrics that violate causality conditions. And secondly, how to evaluate a highly oscillatory path integral over unbounded domains. Relying on Picard-Lefschetz theory to address the second question for discrete Regge gravity, we will illustrate that it can also answer the first question. To this end we will define the Regge action for complexified variables and study its analytical continuation. Although there have bee…
The scheme of using the Chern-Simons action to regularize the gravitational Hamiltonian constraint is extended to including the Lorentzian term in the $k=0$ cosmological model. The Euclidean term and the Lorenzian term are thus regularized separately mimicking the treatment of full loop quantum gravity. The new quantum dynamics for the spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model with a massless scalar field as an emergent time is studied. By semiclassical analysis, the effective Hamiltonian constraint is obtained, which indicates that the new quantum dynamics has the correct classical limi…
We argue that the Lorentzian path integral is a better starting point for quantum cosmology than the Euclidean version. In particular, we revisit the mini-superspace calculation of the Feynman path integral for quantum gravity with a positive cosmological constant. Instead of rotating to Euclidean time, we deform the contour of integration over metrics into the complex plane, exploiting Picard-Lefschetz theory to transform the path integral from a conditionally convergent integral into an absolutely convergent one. We show that this procedure unambiguously determines which semiclassical saddle…
The structure of the general, inhomogeneous solution of (bosonic) Einstein-matter systems in the vicinity of a cosmological singularity is considered. We review the proof (based on ideas of Belinskii-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz and technically simplified by the use of the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner Hamiltonian formalism) that the asymptotic behaviour, as one approaches the singularity, of the general solution is describable, at each (generic) spatial point, as a billiard motion in an auxiliary Lorentzian space. For certain Einstein-matter systems, notably for pure Einstein gravity in any spacetime dimensi…
We give a relativistic spin network model for quantum gravity based on the Lorentz group and its q-deformation, the Quantum Lorentz Algebra. We propose a combinatorial model for the path integral given by an integral over suitable representations of this algebra. This generalises the state sum models for the case of the four-dimensional rotation group previously studied in gr-qc/9709028. As a technical tool, formulae for the evaluation of relativistic spin networks for the Lorentz group are developed, with some simple examples which show that the evaluation is finite in interesting cases. We c…
In this paper we study the Lorentzian path-integral of Gauss-Bonnet gravity in the mini-superspace approximation in four spacetime dimensions and investigate the transition amplitude from one configuration to another. Past studies motivate us on imposing Neumann boundary conditions on initial boundary as they lead to stable behaviour of fluctuations. The transition amplitude is computed exactly while incorporating the non-trivial contribution coming from the Gauss-Bonnet sector of gravity. A saddle-point analysis involving usage of Picard-Lefschetz methods allow us to gain further insight of t…
We study classically and quantum mechanically the Euclidean geometries compatible with an open inflationary universe of a Lorentzian geometry. The Lorentzian geometry of the open universe with an ordinary matter state matches either an open or a closed Euclidean geometry at the cosmological singularity. With an exotic matter state it matches only the open Euclidean geometry and describes a genuine instanton regular at the boundary of a finite radius. The wave functions are found that describe the quantum creation of the open inflationary universe.

Making the Lorentzian path integral for quantum gravity well-defined and computable has been a long standing challenge. In this work we adopt the recently proposed effective spin foam models to the Lorentzian case. This defines a path integral over discrete Lorentzian quantum geometric configurations, which include metric and torsion degrees of freedom. The torsion degrees of freedom arise due to an anomaly, which is parametrized by the Barbero--Immirzi parameter. Requiring a semi-classical regime constrains this parameter, but the precise bound has to be determined by probing the dynamics. Th…
It is suggested that not only the curvature, but also the signature of spacetime is subject to quantum fluctuations. A generalized D-dimensional spacetime metric of the form $g_{μν}=e^a_μη_{ab} e^b_ν$ is introduced, where $η_{ab} = diag\{e^{iθ},1,...,1\}$. The corresponding functional integral for quantized fields then interpolates from a Euclidean path integral in Euclidean space, at $θ=0$, to a Feynman path integral in Minkowski space, at $θ=π$. Treating the phase $e^{iθ}$ as just another quantized field, the signature of spacetime is determined dynamically by its expectation value. The comp…
The gravitational path-integral of Gauss-Bonnet gravity is investigated and the transition from one spacelike boundary configuration to another is analyzed. Of particular interest is the case of Neumann and Robin boundary conditions which is known to lead to a stable Universe in Einstein-Hilbert gravity in four spacetime dimensions. After setting up the variational problem and computing the necessary boundary terms, the transition amplitude is computed \emph{exactly} in the mini-superspace approximation. The $\hbar\to0$ limit brings out the dominant pieces in the path-integral which is traced …
Investigations of classical signature change have generally envisaged applications to cosmological models, usually a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model. The purpose has been to avoid the inevitable singularity of models with purely Lorentzian signature, replacing the neighbourhood of the big bang with an initial, singularity free region of Euclidean signture, and a signature change. We here show that signature change can also avoid the singularity of gravitational collapse. We investigate the process of re-birth of Schwarzschild type black holes, modelling it as a double signature chang…
Evaluating gravitational path integrals in the Lorentzian has been a long-standing challenge due to the numerical sign problem. We show that this challenge can be overcome in simplicial quantum gravity. By deforming the integration contour into the complex, the sign fluctuations can be suppressed, for instance using the holomorphic gradient flow algorithm. Working through simple models, we show that this algorithm enables efficient Monte Carlo simulations for Lorentzian simplicial quantum gravity. In order to allow complex deformations of the integration contour, we provide a manifestly holomo…
We discuss the calculation of one-loop effective actions in Lorentzian spacetimes, based on a very simple application of the method of steepest descent to the integral over the field. We show that for static spacetimes this procedure agrees with the analytic continuation of Euclidean calculations. We also discuss how to calculate the effective action by integrating a renormalization group equation. We show that the result is independent of arbitrary choices in the definition of the coarse-graining and we see again that the Lorentzian and Euclidean calculations agree. When applied to quantum gr…
Spin foam models for gravity or BF theory can be constructed by path integral formulation of the classical discrete models formulated on simplicial manifolds. Using this, we discuss the rigorous construction of Lorentzian spin foam models for gravity and BF theory based on the Gelfand-Naimark theory of the representations of SL(2,C). First we construct the simplex amplitude for the BF SL(2,C) model. Next we discuss the implementation of the Barrett-Crane constraints on this model to derive the spin foam model for gravity. The non-trivial constraints are the cross simplicity constraints which s…
A key insight used in developing the theory of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDTs) is to use the causal (or light-cone) structure of Lorentzian manifolds to restrict the class of geometries appearing in the Quantum Gravity (QG) path integral. By exploiting this structure the models developed in CDTs differ from the analogous models developed in the Euclidean domain, models of (Euclidean) Dynamical Triangulations (DT), and the corresponding Lorentzian results are in many ways more "physical". In this paper we use this insight to formulate a Lorentzian signature model that is analogous to the…
