Digital quantum simulation on quantum systems require algorithms that can be implemented using finite quantum resources. Recent studies have demonstrated digital quantum simulation of open quantum systems on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. In this work, we develop quantum circuits for optimal simulation of Markovian and Non-Markovian open quantum systems. The circuits use ancilla qubits to simulate the environment, and memory effects are induced by storing information about the system on extra qubits. We simulate the amplitude damping channel and dephasing channel as examples of the framework and infer (Non-)Markovianity from the (non-)monotonic behaviour of the dynamics. Further, we develop a method to optimize simulations by decomposing complex open quantum dynamics into smaller parts, that can be simulated using a small number of qubits. We show that this optimization reduces quantum space complexity from $O(l)$ to $O(1)$ for simulating the environment.
We establish a connection between optimal quantum cloning and optimal state estimation for d-dimensional quantum systems. In this way we derive an upper limit on the fidelity of state estimation for d-dimensional pure quantum states and, furthermore, for generalized inputs supported on the symmetric subspace.
Knowledge of optimal quantum measurements is important for a wide range of situations, including quantum communication and quantum metrology. Quantum measurements are usually optimised with an ideal experimental realisation in mind. Real devices and detectors are, however, imperfect. This has to be taken into account when optimising quantum measurements. In this paper, we derive the optimal minimum-cost and minimum-error measurements for a general model of imperfect detection.
We construct crude estimates for non-optimality of quantum measurements in terms of their violation of Holevo's simplified minimum-error optimality conditions. As an application, we show that a modification of Barnett and Croke's proof of the optimality conditions yields a convergent iterative scheme for computing optimal measurements.
We propose a numerical algorithm for finding optimal measurements for quantum-state discrimination. The theory of the semidefinite programming provides a simple check of the optimality of the numerically obtained results.
We study optimal and nearly-optimal quantum strategies for non-local XOR games. First, we prove the following general result: for every non-local XOR game, there exists a set of relations with the properties: (1) a quantum strategy is optimal for the game if and only if it satisfies the relations, and (2) a quantum strategy is nearly optimal for the game if and only if it approximately satisfies the relations. Next, we focus attention on a specific infinite family of XOR games: the CHSH(n) games. This family generalizes the well-known CHSH game. We describe the general form of CHSH(n) optimal …
We study optimal eavesdropping in quantum cryptography with three-dimensional systems, and show that this scheme is more secure than protocols using two-dimensional states. We generalize the according eavesdropping transformation to arbitrary dimensions, and discuss the connection with optimal quantum cloning.
We show how a digitized version of Quantum Annealing can be made optimal, realizing the best possible solution allowed by quantum mechanics in the shortest time, without any prior knowledge on the location and properties of the spectral gap. Our findings elucidate the intimate relation between digitized-QA, optimal Quantum Control, and recently proposed hybrid quantum-classical variational algorithms for quantum-state preparation and optimization. We illustrate this on the simple benchmark problem of an unfrustrated antiferromagnetic Ising chain in a transverse field.
Optimal quantum control theory carries a huge promise for quantum technology. Its experimental application, however, is often hindered by imprecise knowledge of the its input variables, the quantum system's parameters. We show how to overcome this by Adaptive Hybrid Optimal Control (Ad-HOC). This protocol combines open- and closed-loop optimal by first performing a gradient search towards a near-optimal control pulse and then an experimental fidelity measure with a gradient-free method. For typical settings in solid-state quantum information processing, Ad-Hoc enhances gate fidelities by an or…
Quantum illumination is the task of determining the presence of an object in a noisy environment. We determine the optimal continuous variable states for quantum illumination in the limit of zero object reflectivity. We prove that the optimal single mode state is a coherent state, while the optimal two mode state is the two-mode squeezed-vacuum state. We find that these probes are not optimal at non-zero reflectivity, but remain near optimal. This demonstrates the viability of the continuous variable platform for an experimentally accessible, near optimal quantum illumination implementation.
Quantum mechanical systems exhibit an inherently probabilistic nature upon measurement. Using a quantum noise model to describe the stochastic evolution of the open quantum system and working in parallel with classical indeterministic control theory, we present the theory of nonlinear optimal quantum feedback control. The resulting quantum Bellman equation is then applied to the explicitly solvable quantum linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) problem which emphasizes many similarities with the corresponding classical control problem.
We consider the optimal control problem in a two-qubit system with bounded amplitude. Two cases are studied: quantum state preparation and entanglement creation. Cost functions, fidelity and concurrence, are optimized over bang-off controls for different values of the total duration, respectively. For quantum state preparation problem, three critical time points are determined with high precision, and optimal controls are obtained for different durations. A better estimation of the quantum speed limit is obtained, so is the time-optimal control. For entanglement creation problem, two critical …
We demonstrate how insights gained from reformulating the problem of quantum teleportation into one of reversing quantum operations, and designing optimum completely positive maps for teleportation, can enable one to explore optimal approximate reversal of quantum operations on a single qubit. In particular, we show that the optimal approximate reversal of a generalized depolarizing channel can be achieved using only unitary transformations. We also show that for a quantum channel, which reveals some information about the input state, extremal completely positive maps and not unitary transform…
In this paper, we investigate the optimal nonadditive quantum error-detecting codes with distance two. The the numerical simulation shows that, with n being can be 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12, such the n-qubit quantum error-detecting codes with maximal number of codewords can be found. Therein, except the n=7 case, the n-vertex loop graphs help find the optimal quantum codes.
The optimal allocation of resources is a crucial task for their efficient use in a wide range of practical applications in science and engineering. This paper investigates the optimal allocation of resources in multipartite quantum systems. In particular, we show the relevance of proportional fairness and optimal reliability criteria for the application of quantum resources. Moreover, we present optimal allocation solutions for an arbitrary number of qudits using measurement incompatibility as an exemplary resource theory. Besides, we study the criterion of optimal equitability and demonstrate…
We find a resonance behavior in the disturbance when an eavesdropper chooses a near-optimal strategy intentionally or unintentionally when the usual Bennett-Brassard cryptographic scheme is performed between two trusted parties. This phenomenon tends to disappear when eavesdropping strategy moves far from the optimal one. Therefore, we conjecture that this resonant effect is a characteristic for the eavesdropping strategy near to optimal one. We argue that this effect makes the quantum cryptography more secure against the eavesdropper's attack.
We introduce the concept of interpolation in quantum evolution and present a general framework to find the energy optimal Hamiltonian for a quantum system evolving among a given set of middle states using variational and geometric methods. A few special cases are carefully studied. The quantum brachistochrone problem is proved as a special case.
The structure of all completely positive quantum operations is investigated which transform pure two-qubit input states of a given degree of entanglement in a covariant way. Special cases thereof are quantum NOT operations which transform entangled pure two-qubit input states of a given degree of entanglement into orthogonal states in an optimal way. Based on our general analysis all covariant optimal two-qubit quantum NOT operations are determined. In particular, it is demonstrated that only in the case of maximally entangled input states these quantum NOT operations can be performed perfectl…
An optimal estimator of quantum states based on a modified Kalman's Filter is proposed in this work. Such estimator acts after state measurement, allowing obtain an optimal estimation of quantum state resulting in the output of any quantum algorithm. This method is much more accurate than other types of quantum measurements, such as, weak measurement, strong measurement, quantum state tomography, among others.
We show that the quantum states generated by universal optimal quantum cloning of a single photon represent an universal set of quantum superpositions resilient to decoherence. We adopt Bures distance as a tool to investigate the persistence ofquantum coherence of these quantum states. According to this analysis, the process of universal cloning realizes a class of quantum superpositions that exhibits a covariance property in lossy configuration over the complete set of polarization states in the Bloch sphere.
Most methods of optimal control cannot obtain accurate time-optimal protocols. The quantum brachistochrone equation is an exception, and has the potential to provide accurate time-optimal protocols for essentially any quantum control problem. So far this potential has not been realized, however, due to the inadequacy of conventional numerical methods to solve it. Here, using differential geometry, we reformulate the quantum brachistochrone curves as geodesics on the unitary group. With this identification we are able to obtain a numerical method that efficiently solves the brachistochrone prob…
We propose an analysis of the time-optimal control of SU(2) quantum operations. By using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we show how to determine the optimal trajectory reaching a given target state. Explicit analytical solutions are given for two specific examples. We discuss the role of the detuning in the construction of the optimal synthesis.
Quantum Optimal Control (QOC) enables the realization of accurate operations, such as quantum gates, and support the development of quantum technologies. To date, many QOC frameworks have been developed but those remain only naturally suited to optimize a single targeted operation at a time. We extend this concept to optimal control with a continuous family of targets, and demonstrate that an optimization based on neural networks can find families of time-dependent Hamiltonians that realize desired classes of quantum gates in minimal time.
We analyze and compare the optimality of approximate and probabilistic universal programmable quantum processors. We define several characteristics how to quantify the optimality and we study in detail performance of three types of programmable quantum processors based on (1) the C-NOT gate, (2) the SWAP operation, and (3) the model of the quantum information distributor - the QID processor. We show under which conditions the measurement assisted QID processor is optimal. We also investigate optimality of the so-called U-processors and we also compare the optimal approximative implementation o…
We consider the problem of designing an optimal quantum detector that distinguishes unambiguously between a collection of mixed quantum states. Using arguments of duality in vector space optimization, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for an optimal measurement that maximizes the probability of correct detection. We show that the previous optimal measurements that were derived for certain special cases satisfy these optimality conditions. We then consider state sets with strong symmetry properties, and show that the optimal measurement operators for distinguishing between these sta…
Optimal transport is one of the primary goals for designing efficient quantum networks. In this work, the maximum transport is investigated for three-dimensional quantum networks with Platonic geometries affected by dephasing and dissipative Markovian noise. The network and the environmental characteristics corresponding the optimal design are obtained and investigated for five Platonic networks with 4, 6, 8, 12, and 20 number of sites that one of the sites is connected to a sink site through a dissipative process. Such optimal designs could have various applications like switching and multipl…
Bellman's optimality principle has been of enormous importance in the development of whole branches of applied mathematics, computer science, optimal control theory, economics, decision making, and classical physics. Examples are numerous: dynamic programming, Markov chains, stochastic dynamics, calculus of variations, and the brachistochrone problem. Here we show that Bellman's optimality principle is violated in a teleportation problem on a quantum network. This implies that finding the optimal fidelity route for teleporting a quantum state between two distant nodes on a quantum network with…
A simultaneous realization of the Universal Optimal Quantum Cloning Machine (UOQCM) and of the Universal-NOT gate by a quantum injected optical parametric amplification (QIOPA), is reported. The two processes, forbidden in their exact form for fundamental quantum limitations, are found universal and optimal, and the measured fidelity F<1 is found close to the limit values evaluated by quantum theory. This work may enlighten the yet little explored interconnections of fundamental axiomatic properties within the deep structure of quantum mechanics.
We address the problem of the optimal quantum estimation of the coupling parameter of a bilinear interaction, such as the transmittivity of a beam splitter or the internal phase-shift of an interferometer. The optimal measurement scheme exhibits Heisenberg scaling of the measurement precision versus the total energy.
Recently, Briegel et al. present a quantum repeaters protocol using nest entanglement purification for long distance quantum communication(Physical Review Letters \textbf{81},5932). In this paper we present a modified scheme for constructing an optimal quantum repeater using doubly entangled photon pairs that overcomes the limitations of quantum communication via noisy channels. Based on the imperfect quantum operations and classical communications, the polarization entangled quantum channels can be built with a better efficiency.
We review our recent work on the universal (i.e. input state independent) optimal quantum copying (cloning) of qubits. We present unitary transformations which describe the optimal cloning of a qubit and we present the corresponding quantum logical network. We also present network for an optimal quantum copying ``machine'' (transformation) which produces N+1 identical copies from the original qubit. Here again the quality (fidelity) of the copies does not depend on the state of the original and is only a function of the number of copies, N. In addition, we present the machine which universaly …
We identify the optimal measurement for obtaining information about the original quantum state after the state to be measured has undergone partial decoherence due to noise. We quantify the information that can be obtained by the measurement in terms of the Fisher information and find its value for the optimal measurement. We apply our results to a quantum control scheme based on a spin-boson model.
Four common optimality criteria for measurements are formulated using relations in the set of observables, and their connections are clarified. As case studies, 1-0 observables, localization observables, and photon counting observables are considered.
We study the discrimination of multipartite quantum states by local operations and classical communication. We derive that any optimal discrimination of quantum states spanning a two-dimensional Hilbert space in which each party's space is finite dimensional is possible by local operations and one-way classical communication, regardless of the optimality criterion used and how entangled the states are.
We present an O(\sqrt{N}) discrete query quantum algorithm for evaluating balanced binary NAND formulas and an O(N^{{1/2}+O(\frac{1}{\sqrt{\log N}})}) discrete query quantum algorithm for evaluating arbitrary binary NAND formulas.
In this work, we consider optimal state discrimination for a quantum system that interacts with an environment, i.e., states evolve under a quantum channel. We show the conditions on a quantum channel and an ensemble of states such that a measurement for optimal state discrimination is preserved. In particular, we show that when an ensemble of states with equal {\it a priori} probabilities is given, an optimal measurement can be preserved over any quantum channel by applying local operations and classical communication, that is, by manipulating the quantum states before and after the channel a…
We explore the task of optimal quantum channel identification, and in particular the estimation of a general one parameter quantum process. We derive new characterizations of optimality and apply the results to several examples including the qubit depolarizing channel and the harmonic oscillator damping channel. We also discuss the geometry of the problem and illustrate the usefulness of using entanglement in process estimation.
We theoretically and experimentally investigate conditional enhancement of overall coherence of quantum states by probabilistic quantum operations that apply to the input state a quantum filter diagonal in the basis of incoherent states. We identify the optimal filters that for a given probability of successful filtering maximize the output coherence. We verify the performance of the studied quantum filters in a proof-of-principle experiment with linear optics, where a pair of two-level quantum systems is represented by polarization states of two photons. We comprehensively characterize the im…
Quantum controls realize the unitary or nonunitary operations employed in quantum computers, quantum simulators, quantum communications, and other quantum information devices. They implement the desired quantum dynamics with the help of electric, magnetic, or electromagnetic control fields. Quantum optimal control (QOC) deals with designing an optimal control field modulation that most precisely implements a desired quantum operation with minimum energy consumption and maximum robustness against hardware imperfections as well as external noise. Over the last two decades, numerous QOC methods h…
Various schemes have been proposed to overcome the drawback of the decoherence on quantum-enhanced parameter estimation. Here we suggest an alternative method, quantum feedback, to enhance the parameter precision of optimal quantum estimation of a dissipative qubit by investigating its dynamics of quantum Fisher information. We find that compared with the case without feedback, the quantum Fisher information of the dissipative qubit in the case of feedback has a large maximum value in time evolution and a smaller decay rate in the long time.
We present the first experimental demonstration of the ''optimal'' and ''universal'' quantum entangling process involving qubits encoded in the polarization of single photons. The structure of the ''quantum entangling machine'' consists of the quantum injected optical parametric amplifier by which the contextual realization of the 1->2 universal quantum cloning and of the universal NOT (U-NOT) gate has also been achieved.
In this paper, we study the quantum-state estimation problem in the framework of optimal design of experiments. We first find the optimal designs about arbitrary qubit models for popular optimality criteria such as A-, D-, and E-optimal designs. We also give the one-parameter family of optimality criteria which includes these criteria. We then extend a classical result in the design problem, the Kiefer-Wolfowitz theorem, to a qubit system showing the D-optimal design is equivalent to a certain type of the A-optimal design. We next compare and analyze several optimal designs based on the effici…
We address the problem of discriminating with minimal error probability two given quantum operations. We show that the use of entangled input states generally improves the discrimination. For Pauli channels we provide a complete comparison of the optimal strategies where either entangled or unentangled input states are used.
We describe algorithms, and experimental strategies, for the Pareto optimal control problem of simultaneously driving an arbitrary number of quantum observable expectation values to their respective extrema. Conventional quantum optimal control strategies are less effective at sampling points on the Pareto frontier of multiobservable control landscapes than they are at locating optimal solutions to single observable control problems. The present algorithms facilitate multiobservable optimization by following direct paths to the Pareto front, and are capable of continuously tracing the front on…
We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a sequence of quantum measurements to achieve the optimal performance in quantum hypothesis testing. Using an information-spectrum method, we discuss what quantum measurement we should perform in order to attain the optimal exponent of the second error probability under the condition that the first error probability goes to 0. As an asymptotically optimal measurement, we propose a projection measurement characterized by the irreducible representation theory of the special linear group SL(H). Specially, in spin 1/2 system, it is realized by the…
This paper explores the utility of instantaneous and continuous observations in the optimal control of quantum dynamics. Simulations of the processes are performed on several multilevel quantum systems with the goal of population transfer. Optimal control fields are shown to be capable of cooperating or fighting with observations to achieve a good yield, and the nature of the observations may be optimized to more effectively control the quantum dynamics. Quantum observations also can break dynamical symmetries to increase the controllability of a quantum system. The quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno …
Quantum computation is based on implementing selected unitary transformations which represent algorithms. A generalized optimal control theory is used to find the driving field that generates a prespecified unitary transformation. The approach is illustrated in the implementation of one and two qubits gates in model molecular systems.
By a significant modification of the standard protocol of quantum state Teleportation two processes ''forbidden'' by quantum mechanics in their exact form, the Universal NOT gate and the Universal Optimal Quantum Cloning Machine, have been implemented contextually and optimally by a fully linear method. In particular, the first experimental demonstration of the Tele-UNOT Gate, a novel quantum information protocol has been reported (cfr. quant-ph/0304070). A complete experimental realization of the protocol is presented here.
Quantum fidelity is a measure to quantify the closeness of two quantum states. In an operational sense, it is defined as the minimal overlap between the probability distributions of measurement outcomes and the minimum is taken over all possible positive-operator valued measures (POVMs). Quantum fidelity has been investigated in various scientific fields, but the identification of associated optimal measurements has often been overlooked despite its great importance for practical purposes. We find here the optimal POVMs for quantum fidelity between multi-mode Gaussian states in a closed analyt…
In this paper we formulate a risk-sensitive optimal control problem for continuously monitored open quantum systems modelled by quantum Langevin equations. The optimal controller is expressed in terms of a modified conditional state, which we call a risk-sensitive state, that represents measurement knowledge tempered by the control purpose. One of the two components of the optimal controller is dynamic, a filter that computes the risk-sensitive state. The second component is an optimal control feedback function that is found by solving the dynamic programming equation. The optimal controller c…
We show that optimal universal quantum cloning can be realized via stimulated emission. Universality of the cloning procedure is achieved by choosing systems that have appropriate symmetries. We first discuss a scheme based on stimulated emission in certain three-level-systems, e.g. atoms in a cavity. Then we present a way of realizing optimal universal cloning based on stimulated parametric down-conversion. This scheme also implements the optimal universal NOT operation.
We try to find an optimal quantum measurement for generalized quantum state discrimination problems, which include the problem of finding an optimal measurement maximizing the average correct probability with and without a fixed rate of inconclusive results and the problem of finding an optimal measurement in the Neyman-Pearson strategy. We propose an approach in which the optimal measurement is obtained by solving a modified version of the original problem. In particular, the modified problem can be reduced to one of finding a minimum error measurement for a certain state set, which is relati…
Manipulate and control of the complex quantum system with high precision are essential for achieving universal fault tolerant quantum computing. For a physical system with restricted control resources, it is a challenge to control the dynamics of the target system efficiently and precisely under disturbances. Here we propose a multi-level dissipative quantum control framework and show that deep reinforcement learning provides an efficient way to identify the optimal strategies with restricted control parameters of the complex quantum system. This framework can be generalized to be applied to o…
