Two novel three-dimensional (3D) crystal structures of carbon (C) and germanium carbide (GeC2) were predicted using first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. These newly discovered 3D carbon allotrope and GeC2 are in the space group of Fmmm (space group number 69). Their crystal structures have unique tetragonal/hexagonal rings formed by either C or Ge/C atoms. Both structures were proven to be thermodynamically stable through the phonon spectrum calculations. The C allotrope is a semiconductor with a wide band gap of 3.65 eV predicted by the hybrid density functional HSE06 method, while GeC2 is metallic. The new C allotrope has a low mass density of 2.84 g/cm3. More importantly, it is proven to be energetically stable with cohesive energy less than -7.5 eV/atom which is lower than many other carbon allotropes implying the possibility to be fabricated in lab. Such a carbon crystal structure with a low mass density and wide band gap once synthesized would have wide applications in gas adsorption sensors and photo-electronic devices.
Transition metal nitrides have been suggested to have both high hardness and good thermal stability with large potential application value, but so far stable superhard transition metal nitrides have not been synthesized. Here, with our newly developed machine-learning accelerated crystal structure searching method, we designed a superhard tungsten nitride, h-WN6, which can be synthesized at pressure around 65 GPa and quenchable to ambient pressure. This h-WN6 is constructed with single-bonded N6 rings and presents ionic-like features, which can be formulated as W2.4+N62.4-. It has a band gap o…
We predict the existence of stable nonlinear localized modes near the band edge of a two-dimensional reduced-symmetry photonic crystal with a Kerr nonlinearity. Employing the technique based on the Green function, we reveal a physical mechanism of the mode stabilization associated with the effective nonlinear dispersion and long-range interaction in the photonic crystals.
We explore two methods for single crystal growth of the theoretically proposed magnetic Weyl semimetals $R$AlGe ($R$ = Pr,Ce), which prove that a floating zone technique, being both crucible- and flux-free, is crucial to obtain perfectly stoichiometric $R$AlGe crystals. In contrast, the crystals grown by a flux growth technique tend to be Al-rich. We further present both structural and elemental analysis, along with bulk magnetization and electrical resistivity data on the crystals prepared by the floating zone technique. Both systems with the intended 1:1:1 stoichiometry crystallize in the an…
On basis of the first principle calculation we show that a crystalline structure of silicon, as a novel allotrope with nanotubular holes along two perpendicular directions, is stable. The calculations on geometrical and electronic properties reveal that this allotrope possesses a direct band gap wider by 0.5eV than the indirect one of silicon with diamond structure. The crystal belongs to I41/AMD space group, showing anisotropic optical properties and Young modulus. The bulk modulus is 64.4GPa and the density is 1.9g/cm$^{3}$, lower than that of the diamond silicon due to the presence of nanot…

The Euler-Lagrange equation of the phase-field crystal (PFC) model has been solved under appropriate boundary conditions to obtain the equilibrium free energy of the body centered cubic crystal-liquid interface for 18 orientations at various reduced temperatures in the range $ε\in\left[0,0.5\right]$. While the maximum free energy corresponds to the $\left\{ 100\right\} $ orientation for all $ε$ values, the minimum is realized by the $\left\{ 111\right\} $ direction for small $ε\,(<0.13)$, and by the $\left\{ 211\right\} $ orientation for higher $ε$. The predicted dependence on the reduced temp…

The modified Becke-Johnson potential is also used to investigate electrical and optical properties. The density of states and electronic band structure calculations reveal that the predicted stable halides Perovskites ABX3 have a direct as well as indirect band gap, with dielectric function, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficient, optical conductivity, extinction coefficient, refractive index are calculated in different ranges of energy. The maximum value of static dielec…
Silicon in a cubic diamond structure currently plays a significant role in the photovoltaic industry. However, the intrinsic band structures of crystalline silicon restrict its sunlight conversion efficiency. Recently, a clathrate-like Si-24 has been successfully synthesized, which has a quasi-direct bandgap and sheds light on silicon-based photovoltaics. Here, we proposed a two-step crystal structure search method based on first-principles calculations and explored silicon clathrate structures extensively. First, the guest-host compounds were searched at high pressure, and then, the porous gu…
Two new phases YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 are found as a result of careful phase diagram investigations. Between the congruent and peritectic formation of YbCu4.5 and YbCu3.5, respectively, the phases YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 are formed peritectically at 934(2)degC and 931(3)degC. Crystal growth was realised using a Bridgman technique and single crystalline grains of about 50-100 10^{-6}m were analyzed by electron diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Due to the only slight differences in both compositions and formation temperatures the growth of larger single crystals of a defined superstru…
We describe a first open-access database of experimentally investigated hybrid organic-inorganic materials with two-dimensional (2D) perovskite-like crystal structure. The database includes 515 compounds, containing 180 different organic cations, 10 metals (Pb, Sn, Bi, Cd, Cu, Fe, Ge, Mn, Pd, Sb) and 3 halogens (I, Br, Cl) known so far and will be regularly updated. The database contains a geometrical and crystal chemical analysis of the structures, which are useful to reveal quantitative structure-property relationships for this class of compounds. We show that the penetration depth of spacer…
In this work, three novel porous carbon-nitride nanosheets with C7N6, C9N4 and C10N3 stoichiometries are predicted. First-principles simulations were accordingly employed to evaluate stability and explore the mechanical, electronic and optical properties. Phonon dispersions confirm the dynamical stability of all predicted nanosheets. Nonetheless, ab-initio molecular dynamics results indicate that only C7N6 and C9N4 are thermally stable. C7N6, C9N4 and C10N3 nanosheets were predicted to exhibit high elastic modulus of 212, 202 and 208 N/m and maximum tensile strengths of 14.1, 22.4 and 15.8 N/m…
The problem addressed here can be concisely formulated as follows: given a stable surface orientation with a known reconstruction and given a direction in the plane of this surface, find the atomic structure of the steps oriented along that direction. We report a robust and generally applicable variable-number genetic algorithm for step structure determination and exemplify it by determining the structure of monatomic steps on Si(114)-$2\times 1$. We show how the location of the step edge with respect to the terrace reconstructions, the step width (number of atoms), and the positions of the at…
The band structure in phononic crystals (PCs) is usually affected by the deformations of their soft components. In this work, hyperelastic transformation media is proposed to be integrated in the PCs'design, to achieve stable elastic band-gaps which is independent with finite mechanical deformations. For a one-dimensional (1D) PC, we demonstrate the semi-linear soft component can keep all elastic wave bands unchanged with the external deformation field. While for neo-Hookean soft component, only S-wave bands can be precisely retained. The change of the P-wave bands can be predicted by using a …
Towards a resolution of the longstanding controversy regarding the existence of Cu-Li intermetallic compounds, we extensively investigate the phase stability of Cu-Li intermetallics with various possible stoichiometries at zero temperature and pressure using a global structure searching method. It is found that Cu-Li intermetallics can exist stably at atmospheric pressure, and three stable intermetallics (Fmmm Cu1Li2, Fd m Cu2Li1 and P Cu7Li1,) are identified. Electronic structure analysis reveals that although the three stable phases are metallic, covalent Cu-Cu and ionic Cu-Li bonds are foun…
We use solid-state methods to synthesize single crystals of perovskite-phase cesium lead iodide ($γ$-CsPbI3) that are kinetically stable at room temperature. Single crystal X-ray diffraction characterization shows that the compound is orthorhombic with the GdFeO3 structure at room temperature. Unlike conventional semiconductors, the optical absorption and the joint density-of-states of bulk $γ$-CsPbI3 is greatest near the band edge and decreases beyond Eg for at least 1.9 eV. Bulk $γ$-CsPbI3 does not show an excitonic resonance and has an optical band gap of 1.63(3) eV, ~90 meV smaller than ha…
Using a correlation between local yielding and a multiaxial strength-to-stiffness parameter, the continuum-scale yield surface for a polyphase, polycrystalline solid is predicted. The predicted surface explicitly accounts for microstructure through the quantification of strength-to-stiffness based on a finite element model of a crystal-scale sample. The multiaxial strength-to-stiffness is evaluated from the elastic response of the sample and the restricted slip, single-crystal yield surface. Macroscopic yielding is defined by the propogation of a yield band through the sample and is detected w…
There has been a recent surge of interest in using machine learning to approximate density functional theory (DFT) in materials science. However, many of the most performant models are evaluated on large databases of computed properties of, primarily, materials with precise atomic coordinates available, and which have been experimentally synthesized, i.e., which are thermodynamically stable or metastable. These aspects provide challenges when applying such models on theoretical candidate materials, for example for materials discovery, where the coordinates are not known. To extend the scope of…
Employing density functional theory based calculations, we investigate structural, vibrational and strain-dependent electronic properties of an ultra-thin CdTe crystal structure that can be de- rived from its bulk counterpart. It is found that this ultra-thin crystal has an 8-atom primitive unit cell with considerable surface reconstructions. Dynamic stability of the structure is predicted based on its calculated vibrational spectrum. Electronic band structure calculations reveal that both electrons and holes in single layer CdTe possess anisotropic in-plane masses and mobilities. Moreover, we…
Ultrarelativistic charged particles are predicted to emit hard electromagnetic radiation of undulator type while being channeled in a crystal with periodically bent crystallographic planes. The recently proposed crystalline undulator with the bending amplitude smaller than the distance between the bent planes and the bending period shorter than the period of channeling oscillations is far superior to what was proposed previously. In the same time, it is more challenging from the technical point of view because its bending period has to be in the sub-micron range. It is shown that a mixed cryst…
A combination of classical density-functional theory and thermodynamic perturbation theory is applied to a survey of finite-temperature trends in the relative stabilities of one-component crystals and quasicrystals interacting via effective metallic pair potentials derived from pseudopotential theory. Comparing the free energies of several periodic crystals and rational approximant models of quasicrystals over a range of pseudopotential parameters, thermodynamically stable quasicrystals are predicted for parameters approaching the limits of mechanical stability of the crystal structures. Quasi…
Crystal structure determines properties of materials. With the crystal structure of a chemical substance, many physical and chemical properties can be predicted by first-principles calculations or machine learning models. Since it is relatively easy to generate a hypothetical chemically valid formula, crystal structure prediction becomes an important method for discovering new materials. In our previous work, we proposed a contact map-based crystal structure prediction method, which uses global optimization algorithms such as genetic algorithms to maximize the match between the contact map of …
We propose three new phases of H2O under ultrahigh pressure. Our structural search was performed using an adaptive genetic algorithm which allows an extensive exploration of crystal structure. The new sequence of pressure-induced transitions beyond ice X at 0 K should be ice X - Pbcm - Pbca - Pmc21 - P21 - P21/c phases. Across the Pmc21 - P21 transition, the coordination number of oxygen increases from 4 to 5 with a significant increase of density. All stable crystalline phases have nonmetallic band structures up to 7 TPa.
A simulation study demonstrates that localization can arise as the result of the breakdown of stable quasi-crystal-like atomic configurations. Samples produced at elevated quench rates and via more energetic processes contain a lower fraction of such configurations and exhibit significantly less pronounced localization and shorter spacing between bands. In the samples produced by the lowest quench rates localization is accompanied by the amorphization of material with initially quasi-crystal-like medium range order. This result is of particular significance in light of recent experimental evid…
The Materials Project crystal structure database has been searched for materials possessing layered motifs in their crystal structures using a topology-scaling algorithm. The algorithm identifies and measures the sizes of bonded atomic clusters in a structure's unit cell, and determines their scaling with cell size. The search yielded 826 stable layered materials, which are considered as candidates for the formation of two-dimensional monolayers via exfoliation. Density-functional theory calculates the exfoliation energy of each material and 681 monolayers are found to exhibit exfoliation ener…
Noble metals adopt close-packed structures at ambient pressure and rarely undergo structural transformation at high pressures. Platinum (Pt), in particular, is normally considered to be unreactive and is therefore not expected to form hydrides under pressure. We predict that platinum hydride (PtH) has a lower enthalpy than its constituents solid Pt and molecular hydrogen at pressures above 21.5 GPa. We have calculated structural phase transitions from tetragonal to hexagonal close-packed or face-centered cubic (fcc) PtH between 70 and 80 GPa. Linear response calculations indicate that PtH is a…
Classical density-functional theory is employed to study finite-temperature trends in the relative stabilities of one-component quasicrystals interacting via effective metallic pair potentials derived from pseudopotential theory. Comparing the free energies of several periodic crystals and rational approximant models of quasicrystals over a range of pseudopotential parameters, thermodynamically stable quasicrystals are predicted for parameters approaching the limits of mechanical stability of the crystalline structures. The results support and significantly extend conclusions of previous groun…
The crystal structure of boron is unique among chemical elements, highly complex, and imperfectly known. Experimentalists report the beta-rhombohedral (black) form is stable over all temperatures from absolute zero to melting. However, early calculations found its energy to be greater than the energy of the alpha-rhombohedral (red) form, implying beta cannot be stable at low temperatures. Furthermore, beta exhibits partially occupied sites, seemingly in conflict with the thermodynamic requirement that entropy vanish at low temperature. Using electronic density functional theory methods and an …
The band dispersion of the two highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-derived bands in thin crystalline Pentacene films grown on Bi(001) was determined by photoemission spectroscopy. Compared to first-principles calculations our data show a significantly smaller band width and a much larger band separation indicating that the molecular interactions are weaker than predicted by theory--a direct contradiction to previous reports by Kakuta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 247601 (2007)]. The effective hole mass m* at M-bar is found to be anisotropic and larger than theoretically predicted. Compari…
The mechanical properties of $β$-Sn single crystals have been systematically investigated using a combined methodology of micropillar tests and rate-dependent crystal plasticity modelling. The slip strength and rate sensitivity of several key slip systems within $β$-Sn single crystals have been determined. Consistency between the numerically predicted and experimentally observed slip traces has been shown for pillars oriented to activate single and double slip. Subsequently, the temperature-dependent, intermetallic-size-governing behaviour of a polycrystal $β$-Sn-rich alloy SAC305 (96.5Sn-3Ag-…
Ferromagnetism in two-dimensional materials presents a promising platform for the development of ultrathin spintronic devices with advanced functionalities. Recently discovered ferromagnetic van der Waals crystals such as CrI$_{3}$, readily isolated two-dimensional crystals, are highly tunable through external fields or structural modifications. However, there remains a challenge because of material instability under air exposure. Here, we report the observation of an air stable and layer dependent ferromagnetic (FM) van der Waals crystal, CrPS$_{4}$, using magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy…
Simultaneous differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) measurements with copper oxide/aluminum oxide mixtures were performed in atmospheres with varying oxygen partial pressures and with crucibles made of different materials. Only sapphire and platinum crucibles proved to be stable under conditions that are useful for the growth of CuAlO$_2$ delafossite single crystals. Then the ternary phase diagram Al$_2$O$_3$-CuO-Cu and its isopleth section Cu$_2$O-Al$_2$O$_3$ were redetermined. Millimeter sized crystals could be obtained from copper oxide melts with 1-2 mol % addition …
Fe$_3$O$_4$ is a ferrimagnetic spinel ferrite that exhibits electric conductivity at room temperature (RT). Although the material has been predicted to be a half metal according to ab-initio calculations, magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with Fe$_3$O$_4$ electrodes have demonstrated a small tunnel magnetoresistance effect. Not even the sign of the TMR ratio has been experimentally established. Here, we report on the magnetic properties of epitaxial Fe$_3$O$_4$ films with various crystal orientations. The films exhibited apparent crystal orientation dependence on hysteresis curves. In particula…

We searched for stable crystal structures of YFe$_{12}$ using a crystal structure prediction technique based on a genetic algorithm and first-principles calculations. We obtained two monoclinic $C2/m$ structures as metastable phases that are different from the well-known ThMn$_{12}$ structure. These two phases have advantages in their magnetism over the ThMn$_{12}$ structure: The total magnetization $M$ is increased from 25.6 $μ_{\text{B}}$/f.u. up to 26.8 $μ_{\text{B}}$/f.u. by the transformations. We also calculated Curie temperature $T_{\text{C}}$ for these structures within the mean-field …
We report the physical properties of orthorhombic o-CuMnAs single crystal, which is predicted to be a topological Dirac semimetal with magnetic ground state and inversion symmetry broken. o-CuMnAs exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition with TN ~ 312 K. Further characterizations of magnetic properties suggest that the AFM order may be canted with the spin orientation in the bc plane. Small isotropic MR and linearly field-dependent Hall resistivity with positive slope indicate that single hole-type carries with high density and low mobility dominate the transport properties of o-CuMnAs. Furthe…
We report here the completion of the electronic structure of the majority of the known stoichiometric inorganic compounds, as listed in the International Crystal Structure Data-base (ICSD). We make a detailed comparison of the electronic structure, crystal geometry and chemical bonding of cuprate high temperature superconductors, with the calculated over sixty thousand electronic structures. Based on compelling similarities of the electronic structures in the normal state and a data-filtering technique, we propose that high temperature superconductivity is possible for electron- or hole-doping…
The phase diagram of model anisotropic particles with four attractive patches in a tetrahedral arrangement has been computed at two different values for the range of the potential, with the aim of investigating the conditions under which a diamond crystal can be formed. We find that the diamond phase is never stable for our longer-ranged potential. At low temperatures and pressures, the fluid freezes into a body-centred-cubic solid that can be viewed as two interpenetrating diamond lattices with a weak interaction between the two sublattices. Upon compression, an orientationally ordered face-c…
CuFeO$_2$ single crystals up to 50 mm in length and up to 10 mm in diameter were grown by the optical floating-zone method. Stoichiometric polycrystalline rods with a diameter of 6-12 mm were used as feed materials to produce crystals of sufficient size to be used as substrates for the growth of thin films of delafossites. For stable growth along the $c$-axis, low growth rates of 0.4 mm/h are necessary. Due to the incongruent melting behavior of CuFeO$_2$, a stable melt zone requires adjustment of the lamp power during growth. The melting of CuFeO$_2$ is not simply incongruent because the ther…

A molecular solid C$_{50}$Cl$_{10}$ with possible crystalline structures, including the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) phase, the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase, and a hexagonal monolayer, is predicted in terms of first-principles calculation within the density functional theory. The stable structures are determined from the total-energy calculations, where the hcp phase is uncovered more stable than the fcc phase and the hexagonal monolayer in energy per molecule. The energy bands and density of states for hcp and fcc C$_{50}$Cl$_{10}$ are presented. The results show that C$_{50}$Cl% $_{10}$ m…
We constructed physically stable sp2 negatively curved cubic carbon structures which reticulate a Schwarz P-like surface. The method for constructing such crystal structures is based on the notion of the standard realization of abstract crystal lattices. In this paper, we expound on the mathematical method to construct such crystal structures.
Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature (5--300 K) have been measured on single crystals of the multiferroic compound FeTe$_{2}$O$_{5}$Br utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. Analysis of the anisotropic excitation spectra via Drude-Lorentz fitting and lattice dynamical calculations have lead to the observation of all 52 IR-active modes predicted in the $ac$ plane and 43 or the 53 mo…
The graphene-graphite relationship in structural geometry is a basic principle to predict novel two-dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we demonstrate that this is not the case in binary metallic systems. We use the Bayesian optimization framework combined with the density-functional theory approach to determine the stable configuration of atomic species on a hexagonal plane. We show that the optimized structure of 2D Cu-Au exhibits the hexagonal lattice of a hexagonal ring of Cu atoms containing one Au atom, where the number of the Cu atoms is larger than that of the Au atoms in the unit cell, …
Renewable energy sources are of great interest to combat global warming, yet promising sources like photovoltaic (PV) cells are not efficient and cheap enough to act as an alternative to traditional energy sources. Perovskite has high potential as a PV material but engineering the right material for a specific application is often a lengthy process. In this paper, ABO3 type perovskites' formability is predicted and its crystal structure is classified using machine learning with high accuracy, which provides a fast screening process. Although the study was done with solar-cell application in mi…
The dynamical stability of three-dimensional (3D) Lennard-Jones (LJ) crystals has been studied for many years. The face-centered-cubic and hexagonal close packed structures are dynamically stable, while the body-centered cubic structure is stable only for long range LJ potentials that are characterized by relatively small integer pairs $(m,n)$. Here, we study the dynamical stability of two-dimensional (2D) LJ crystals, where the planar hexagonal, the buckled honeycomb, and the buckled square structures are assumed. We demonstrate that the stability property of 2D and 3D LJ crystals can be clas…
A sizable transverse thermoelectric coefficient N , large to the extent that it potentially serves applications, is predicted to arise, by means of first-principles calculations, in a Skyrmion crystal assumed on EuO monolayer where carrier electrons are introduced upon a quantum anomalous Hall insulating phase of Chern number C = 2. This encourages future experiments to pursue such an effect.
The skyrmion is a topologically stable spin texture, in which the spin direction wraps a sphere. The topological nature gives rise to emergent electromagnetic phenomena such as topological Hall effect. Recently, the crystallization of nanoscale skyrmions was observed in chiral helimagnets with use of the neutron diffraction and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The skyrmions are quite mobile under electric current density as low as $\sim$ 10$^6$ A/m$^2$, and, in some cases, stable up to near room temperature. These features suggest that the skyrmions may work as a magnetic stable-varia…

While in principle, finite temperature density functional theory (ftDFT) should be a powerful tool for the study of crystallization, in practice this has not so far been the case. Progress has been hampered by technical problems which have plagued the study of the crystalline systems using the most sophisticated Fundamental Measure Theory models. In this paper, the reasons for the difficulties are examined and it is proposed that the tensor functionals currently favored are in fact numerically unstable. By reverting to an older, more heuristic model it is shown that all of the technical diffic…
