The band dispersion of the two highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-derived bands in thin crystalline Pentacene films grown on Bi(001) was determined by photoemission spectroscopy. Compared to first-principles calculations our data show a significantly smaller band width and a much larger band separation indicating that the molecular interactions are weaker than predicted by theory--a direct contradiction to previous reports by Kakuta et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 247601 (2007)]. The effective hole mass m* at M-bar is found to be anisotropic and larger than theoretically predicted. Comparison of m* to field effect mobility measurements shows that the band structure has a strong influence on the mobility even at room temperature where we estimate the scattering rate to be tau ~3 fs.
The electron-phonon(e-p) interaction in Pentacene (Pn) films grown on Bi(001) was investigated using photoemission spectroscopy. The spectra reveal thermal broadening from which we determine an e-p mass enhancement factor of lambda = 0.36 +/- 0.05 and an effective Einstein energy of omega_E = 11 +/- 4 meV. From omega_E it is inferred that dominant contributions to the e-p effects observed in ARPES come from intermolecular vibrations. Based on the experimental data for lambda we extract an effective Peierls coupling value of g_eff = 0.55. The e-p coupling narrows the HOMO band width by 15 +/- 8…
Electrons and holes are locally injected in a single pentacene monolayer island. The two-dimensional distribution and concentration of the injected carriers are measured by electrical force microscopy. In crystalline monolayer islands, both carriers are delocalized over the whole island. On disordered monolayer, carriers stay localized at their injection point. These results provide insight into the electronic properties, at the nanometer scale, of organic monolayers governing performances of organic transistors and molecular devices.
The crystal structure and phonon dynamics of pentacene is computed with the Quasi Harmonic Lattice Dynamics (QHLD) method, based on atom-atom potential. We show that two crystalline phases of pentacene exist, rather similar in thermodynamic stability and in molecular density. The two phases can be easily distinguished by Raman spectroscopy in the 10-100 cm-1 spectral region. We have not found any temperature induced phase transition, whereas a sluggish phase change to the denser phase is induced by pressure. The bandwidths of the two phases are slightly different. The charge carrier coupling t…
Electron-phonon coupling plays a central role in the transport properties and photophysics of organic crystals. Successful models describing charge- and energy-transport in these systems routinely include these effects. Most models for describing photophysics, on the other hand, only incorporate local electron-phonon coupling to intramolecular vibrational modes, while nonlocal electron-phonon coupling is neglected. One might expect nonlocal coupling to have an important effect on the photophysics of organic crystals, because it gives rise to large fluctuation in the charge-transfer couplings, …
The bandstructure of pentacene is calculated using first-principles density functional theory. A large anisotropy of the hole and electron effective masses within the molecular planes is found. The band dispersion of the HOMO and the LUMO is analyzed with the help of a tight-binding fit. The anisotropy is shown to be intimately related to the herringbone structure.
Potassium is introduced into the crystalline herringbone structure of pentacene searching for a compound showing metallic electronic transport properties and, hopefully, superconductivity at small enough temperatures. Several possible structures for stoichiometric KPentacene (1:1), K2Pentacene (2:1) and K3Pentacene (3:1) compounds are theoretically investigated. Detailed densities of states for all of them are presented. As a more prominent result, a new monoclinic structure has been stabilized for the potassium richer material that could correspond to the recently synthesized superconducting …
Charge-transfer excitons (CTX) at organic donor/acceptor interfaces are considered important intermediates for charge separation in photovoltaic devices. Crystalline model systems provide microscopic insights into the nature of such states as they enable microscopic structure-property investigations. Here, we use angular-resolved UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy to characterize the CTX of crystalline pentacene:perfluoro-pentacene (PEN:PFP) films allowing to determine the polarization of this state. This analysis is complemented by first-principles many-body calculations, performed on the three-d…
Pentacenequinone (PnQ) impurities have been introduced into a pentacene source material at number densities from 0.001 to 0.474 to quantify the relative effects of impurity content and grain boundary structure on transport in pentacene thin-film transistors. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrical measurements of top-contact pentacene thin-film transistors have been employed to directly correlate initial structure and final film structures, with the device mobility as a function of added impurity content. The results reveal a factor four decrease in mobility without significant changes in…
Pentacenequinone (PnQ) impurities have been introduced into a pentacene source material in a controlled manner to quantify the relative effects of the impurity content on grain boundary structure and thin film nucleation. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been employed to directly characterize films grown using 0.0-7.5% PnQ by weight in the source material. Analysis of the distribution of capture zones areas of submonolayer islands as a function of impurity content shows that for large PnQ content the critical nucleus size for forming a Pn island is smaller than for low PnQ content. This resul…
By comparing photoemission spectroscopy with a non-perturbative dynamical mean field theory extension to many-body ab initio calculations, we show in the prominent case of pentacene crystals that an excellent agreement with experiment for the bandwidth, dispersion and lifetime of the hole carrier bands can be achieved in organic semiconductors provided that one properly accounts for the coupling to molecular vibrational modes and the presence of disorder. Our findings rationalize the growing experimental evidence that even the best band structure theories based on a many-body treatment of elec…
In the preceding paper, we assembled the theoretical components necessary for a unified framework of singlet fission, a type of multiexciton generation producing two triplet excitons from one singlet exciton. In this paper, we apply our methodology to molecular dimers of pentacene, a widely studied material that exhibits singlet fission. We address a longstanding theoretical issue, namely whether singlet fission proceeds via two sequential electron transfer steps mediated by a charge-transfer state or via a direct two-electron transfer process. We find evidence for a superexchange mediated mec…
The optical properties of pentacene (PEN) and perfluoropentacene(PFP) thin films on various SiO2 substrates were studied using variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. Structural characterization was performed using X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy. A uniaxial model with the optic axis normal to the sample surface was used to analyze the ellipsometry data. A Strong optical anisotropy was observed and enabled the direction of the transition dipole of the absorption bands to be determined. Furthermore, comparison of the optical constants of PEN and PFP thin films with the absorpt…
We report a detailed comparison on the role of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of dipolar molecules on the threshold voltage and charge carrier mobility of organic field-effect transistor (OFET) made of both amorphous and polycrystalline organic semiconductors. We show that the same relationship between the threshold voltage and the dipole-induced charges in the SAM holds when both types of devices are fabricated on strictly identical base substrates. Charge carrier mobilities, almost constant for amorphous OFET, are not affected by the dipole in the SAMs, while for polycrystalline OFET (pent…
The structural and electronic properties of a single pentacene molecule and a pentacene molecular crystal, an organic semiconductor, are examined by a first-principles method based on the generalized gradient approximation of density functional theory. Calculations were carried out for a triclinic unit cell containing two pentacene molecules. The bandwidths of the valence and conduction bands which determine the charge migration mechanism are found to depend strongly on the crystallographic direction. Along the triclinic reciprocal lattice vectors A and B which are orientated approximately per…
We investigate the structure of mixed thin films composed of pentacene (PEN) and diindenoperylene (DIP) using X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. For equimolar mixtures we observe vanishing in-plane order coexisting with an excellent out-of-plane order, a yet unreported disordering behavior in binary mixtures of organic semiconductors, which are crystalline in their pure form. One approach to rationalize our findings is to introduce an anisotropic interaction parameter in the framework of a mean field model. By comparing the structural properties with those of other mix…
Organic electronic materials have potential applications in a number of low-cost, large area electronic devices such as flat panel displays and inexpensive solar panels. Small molecules in the series Anthracene, Tetracene, Pentacene, are model molecules for organic semiconductor thin films to be used as the active layers in such devices. This has motivated a number of studies of polyacene thin film growth and structure. Although the majority of these studies rely on vapor-deposited films, solvent-based deposition of films with improved properties onto non-crystalline substrates is desired for …
Based on the conventional energy band theory, an approach is presented to describe the electronic structure of crystalline insulators in the presence of a finite homogeneous electric field. The expression of polarization is derived which extends the ``Berry-phase'' theory of polarization to nonzero fields. The characteristics of the solutions are studied in details and the associations with the existing perturbation theories and computational schemes are discussed.
The nucleation mechanisms during solution deposition of organic semiconductor thin films determine the grain morphology and may influence the crystalline packing in some cases. Here, in-situ optical spectromicroscopy in reflection mode is used to study the growth mechanisms and thermal stability of 6,13-bis(trisopropylsilylethynyl)-pentacene thin films. The results show that the films form in a supersaturated state before transforming to a solid film. Molecular aggregates corresponding to subcritical nuclei in the crystallization process are inferred from optical spectroscopy measurements of t…
We have measured the thermal resistances of thin films of the small molecule organic semiconductors bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS-pn), bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (TES-ADT) and difluoro bis(triethylsilylethynyl) anthradithiophene (diF-TES-ADT). For each material, several films of different thicknesses have been measured to separate the effects of intrinsic thermal conductivity from interface thermal resistance. For non-crystalline films of all three materials, with thicknesses ranging from < 100 nm to > 4 microns, the thermal conductivities are similar to that o…
Designing and understanding functional electronic and magnetic properties in perovskite oxides requires controlling and tuning the underlying crystal lattice. Here we report the structure, including oxygen and cation positions, of a single-crystal, entropy stabilized perovskite oxide film of La(Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2)O3 grown on SrTiO3 (001). The parent materials range from orthorhombic (LaCrO3, LaMnO3 and LaFeO3) to rhombohedral (LaCoO3 and LaNiO3), and first principles calculations indicate that these structural motifs are nearly degenerate in energy and should be highly distorted site-to…
The properties of organometallic wires [TM2(Ant)] constructed with transitional metals (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn and Fe) and anthracene (Ant) are investigated by first-principles calculations. As the gap between HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) and LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) of Ant is much smaller than that of benzene (Bz), much larger charge transfer (CT) occurs between TMs and Ant, which results in much more diverse magnetic properties in [TM2(Ant)] than in [TM2(Ant)]. Particularly, [V2(Ant)] and [Cr2(Ant)] are found to be half-metallic ferromagnets. As a result of thi…
Ice nucleation plays a significant role in a large number of natural and technological processes, but it is challenging to investigate experimentally because of the small time (ns) and short length scales (nm) involved. On the other hand, conventional molecular simulations struggle to cope with the relatively long timescale required for critical ice nuclei to form. One way to tackle this issue is to take advantage of free energy or path sampling techniques. Unfortunately, these are computationally costly. Seeded molecular dynamics is a much less demanding alternative that has been successfully…

Historically, comprehensive studies of dilute ferromagnetic semiconductors, e.g., $p$-type (Cd,Mn)Te and (Ga,Mn)As, paved the way for a quantitative theoretical description of effects associated with spin-orbit interactions in solids, such as crystalline magnetic anisotropy. In particular, the theory was successful in explaining {\em uniaxial} magnetic anisotropies associated with biaxial strain and non-random formation of magnetic dimers in epitaxial (Ga,Mn)As layers. However, the situation appears much less settled in the case of the {\em cubic} term: the theory predicts switchings of the ea…
In this paper we provide a proof of the multiplicative kinematic description of crystal elastoplasticity in the setting of large deformations, i.e. $\mathbf{F}=\mathbf{F}^e\mathbf{F}^p$, for a two dimensional single crystal. The proof starts by considering a general configuration at the mesoscopic scale, where the dislocations are discrete line defects (points in the two-dimensional description used here) and the displacement field can be considered continuous everywhere in the domain except at the slip surfaces, over which there is a displacement jump. At such scale, as previously shown by tw…
Samarium has two stable valence states, 2+ and 3+, which coexist in many compounds forming spatially homogeneous intermediate valence states. We study the valence state of samarium when incorporated in a single crystalline EuO thin film which crystallizes in a $fcc$-structure similar to that of the intermediate valence SmO, but with a larger lattice constant. Due to the increased lattice spacing, a stabilization of the larger Sm$^{2+}$ ion is expected. Surprisingly, the samarium incorporated in Sm$_{\mathrm{x}}$Eu$_{\mathrm{1-x}}$O thin films shows a predominantly trivalent character, as deter…
We report the synthesis of complex salts made from the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium and diblock copolymers poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(acrylamide) of different molecular weights. In water, the complex salts self-assemble into stable hierarchical aggregates with a dense core and a diffuse shell. In contrast to earlier reports, the surfactant/polymer aggregates exhibit a liquid crystalline structure of Pm3n cubic symmetry. The crystal structure is analogous to that obtained with homopolymer. Size and aggregation numbers were estimated from a combination of light and small-angl…
The magnetic structure of a Cr monolayer on a W(110) substrate is investigated by means of first-principles calculations based on the noncollinear spin density functional theory (DFT). As magnetic ground state we find a long-period homochiral left-rotating spin spiral on-top of an atomic-scale anti-ferromagnetic order of nearest neighbor atoms. The rotation angle of the magnetic moment changes inhomogeneously from atom to atom across the spiral. We predict a propagation direction along the crystallographic [001] direction with a period length of 14.3 nm, which is in excellent agreement with a …
Control of the crystallization process at the microscopic level makes it possible to generate the nanocrystalline samples with the desired structural and morphological properties, that is of great importance for modern industry. In the present work, we study the influence of supercooling on the structure and morphology of the crystalline nuclei arising and growing within a liquid metallic film. The cluster analysis allows us to compute the diffraction patterns and to evaluate the morphological characteristics (the linear sizes of the homogeneous part and the thickness of the surface layer) of …
We report photocarrier time-of-flight measurements in diode structures made of highly porous crystalline silicon. The corresponding electron and hole drift mobilities are very small compared to homogeneous crystalline silicon. They show two additional signatures of semiclassical transport that are directly limited by a porous geometry: the mobilities are dispersive (i.e. dependent on time), and have very little temperature-dependence. A pure, geometry-limited transport is surprising in the context of nanometer-scale models for electronic states such as quantum percolation or nanocrystal aggreg…
In this work, we report on the growth of high-mobility $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ homoepitaxial thin films grown at a temperature much lower than the conventional growth temperature window for metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Low-temperature $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$ thin films grown at 600$^{\circ}$C on Fe-doped (010) bulk substrates exhibits remarkable crystalline quality which is evident from the measured room temperature Hall mobility of 186 cm$^2$/Vs for the unintentionally doped films. N-type doping is achieved by using Si as a dopant and controllable doping in the range of 2$\times$10$^{16}$ - 2$\times$10$…
