Since the early days of Dirac flux quantization, magnetic monopoles have been sought after as a potential corollary of quantized electric charge. As opposed to magnetic monopoles embedded into the theory of electromagnetism, Weyl crystals exhibit Berry flux monopoles in reciprocal parameter space. As a function of crystal momentum, such monopoles locate at the degeneracy point of the Weyl cone. Here, we report momentum-resolved spectroscopic signatures of Berry flux monopoles in TaAs as a paradigmatic Weyl semimetal. We have probed the orbital and spin angular momentum (OAM and SAM) of the Weyl-fermion states by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy at bulk-sensitive soft X-ray energies (SX-ARPES) combined with photoelectron spin detection and circular dichroism. Supported by first-principles calculations, our measurements image characteristics of a topologically non-trivial winding of the OAM at the Weyl nodes and unveil a chirality-dependent SAM of the Weyl bands. Our results experimentally visualize the non-trivial momentum-space topology in a Weyl semimetal, promising to have profound implications for the study of quantum-geometric effects in solids.
The topological nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) possess a loop of Dirac nodes in the k space with linear dispersion, different from the point nodes in Dirac/Weyl semimetals. While the quantum transport associated with the topologically nontrivial Dirac fermions has been investigated extensively, features uniquely associated with the extended nodal lines remain to be demonstrated. Here, we investigate the quantum oscillations (QOs) in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS, with the electron transport along the c axis, and magnetic field rotating in the ab plane. The extremal orbits identified through th…
The subject of topological materials has attracted immense attention in condensed-matter physics, because they host new quantum states of matter containing Dirac, Majorana, or Weyl fermions. Although Majorana fermions can only exist on the surface of topological superconductors, Dirac and Weyl fermions can be realized in both 2D and 3D materials. The latter are semimetals with Dirac/Weyl cones either not tilted (type I) or tilted (type II). Although both Dirac and Weyl fermions have massless nature with the nontrivial Berry phase, the formation of Weyl fermions in 3D semimetals require either …
The Berry phase and curvature are studied for the Dirac nodal line semimetal of single-component molecular conductor [Pd(dddt)$_2$]. Using two-band model on the basis of a tight-binding model, it is shown that the Berry curvature, $\bm{B}(\bm{k})$, exists along a loop of the nodal line, on which the Berry phase is obtained from surface integral of $\bm{B}(\bm{k})$. The Berry phase, which is called Zak phase, is also calculated from one-dimensional integral of the Berry connection along a line between two equivalent points of boundaries of Brillouin zone. The possible experiment is discussed in…
We report a detailed magneto-transport study in single crystals of NbP. High quality crystals were grown by vapour transport method. An exceptionally large magnetoresistance is confirmed at low temperature which is non-saturating and is linear at high fields. Models explaining the linear magnetoresistance are discussed and it is argued that in NbP this is linked to charge carrier mobility fluctuations. Negative longitudinal magnetoresistance is not seen, unlike several other Weyl monopnictides, suggesting lack of well defined chiral anomaly in NbP. Unambiguous Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations ar…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry exhibit a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect originating from the Berry curvature. To employ this large Hall current for room temperature topo-spintronics applications, it is necessary to fabricate these materials as thin or ultrathin films. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that Weyl semimetal Co2MnGa thin films (20-50 nm) show a very large anomalous Hall angle ~11.4% at low temperature and ~9.7% at room temperature, which can be ascribed to the nontrivial topology of the band structure with large intrinsic Berry c…
The quest for nonmagnetic Weyl semimetals with high tunability of phase has remained a demanding challenge. As the symmetry breaking control parameter, the ferroelectric order can be steered to turn on/off the Weyl semimetals phase, adjust the band structures around the Fermi level, and enlarge/shrink the momentum separation of Weyl nodes which generate the Berry curvature as the emergent magnetic field. Here, we report the realization of a ferroelectric nonmagnetic Weyl semimetal based on indium doped Pb1 xSnxTe alloy where the underlying inversion symmetry as well as mirror symmetry is broke…
Topological magnetic semimetals, like Co3Sn2S2 and Co2MnGa, are known to display exotic transport properties, such as large intrinsic anomalous (AHE) due to uncompensated Berry curvature. The highly symmetric XPt3 compounds display anti-crossing gapped nodal lines, which are a driving mechanism in the intrinsic Berry curvature Hall effects. Uniquely, these compounds contain two sets of gapped nodal lines that harmoniously dominate the Berry curvature in this complex multiband system. We calculate a maximum AHE of 1965 S/cm in the CrPt3 by a state-of-the-art first principle electronic structure…
Topological Weyl semimetals can host Weyl nodes with monopole charges in momentum space. How to detect the signature of the monopole charges in quantum transport remains a challenging topic. Here, we reveal the connection between the parity of monopole charge in topological semimetals and the quantum interference corrections to the conductivity. We show that the parity of monopole charge determines the sign of the quantum interference correction, with odd and even parity yielding the weak anti-localization and weak localization effects, respectively. This is attributed to the Berry phase diffe…
Noncentrosymmetric metals are anticipated to exhibit a $dc$ photocurrent in the nonlinear optical response caused by the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are expected to be excellent candidates for observing these nonlinear effects because they carry a large Berry curvature concentrated in small regions, i.e., near the Weyl points. We have implemented the semiclassical Berry curvature dipole formalism into an $ab~initio$ scheme and investigated the second-order nonlinear response for two representative groups of materials: the TaAs-family type-I WSMs and MoTe$_2…
Magnetic semimetals have increasingly emerged as lucrative platforms hosting spin-based topological phenomena in real and momentum spaces. Of particular interest is the emergence of Berry curvature, whose geometric origin, accessibility from Hall transport experiments, and material tunability, bodes well for new physics and practical devices. Cr1+dTe2, a self-intercalated magnetic transition metal dichalcogenide, TMD, exhibits attractive natural attributes relevant to such applications, including topological magnetism, tunable electron filling, magnetic frustration etc. While recent studies ha…
Nodal semimetals are a unique platform to explore topological signatures of the unusual band structure that can manifest by accumulating a nontrivial phase in quantum oscillations. Here we report a study of the de Haasvan Alphen oscillations of the candidate topological nodal line semimetal CaAgAs using torque measurements in magnetic fields up to 45 T. Our results are compared with calculations for a toroidal Fermi surface originating from the nodal ring. We find evidence of a nontrivial Berry phase shift only in one of the oscillatory frequencies. We interpret this as a Berry phase arising f…
Although topological invariants have been introduced to classify the appearance of protected electronic states at surfaces of insulators, there are no corresponding indexes for Weyl semimetals whose nodal points may appear randomly in the bulk Brillouin Zone (BZ). Here we use a well-known result that every Weyl point acts as a Dirac monopole and generates integer Berry flux to search for the monopoles on rectangular BZ grids that are commonly employed in self-consistent electronic structure calculations. The method resembles data mining technology of computer science and is demonstrated on loc…
We propose a method to predict the existence of topologically protected electromagnetic chiral modes between continuous media described by Maxwell's equations. The number and character of these modes is related to topological charges (Berry monopoles) in parameter space. Unlike the approaches proposed so far, our description does not require a regularization parameter at large $\mathbf{k}$ nor the materials to be topological on their own. The predictions of the theory are confirmed by additional numerical simulations of interfaces of gyrotropic media.
It has been recently predicted that the interplay between Coulomb interactions and Berry curvature can produce interesting optical phenomena in topologically nontrivial two-dimensional insulators. Here, we present a theory of the optical absorption for three-dimensional, hole-doped Weyl semimetals. We find that the Berry curvature, Coulomb interactions and the nonlinearity in the single-particle energy spectrum can together enable a light-induced valley polarization. We support and supplement our numerical results with an analytical toy model calculation, which unveils topologically nontrivial…
Berry curvature acts analogous to a magnetic field in the momentum-space, and it modifies the flow of charge carriers and entropy. This induces several intriguing magnetoelectric and magnetothermal transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals. %, including the planar Hall and planar Nernst effect. Here, we explore the impact of the Berry curvature and orbital magnetization on the thermopower in tilted type-I and type-II Weyl semimetals, using semiclassical Boltzmann transport formalism. We analytically calculate the full magnetoconductivity matrix and use it to obtain the thermopower matrix for diff…
Weyl semimetal emerges as a new topologically nontrivial phase of matter, hosting low-energy excitations of massless Weyl fermions. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2. Transport studies show a butterfly-like magnetoresistance at low temperature, reflecting the anisotropy of the electron Fermi surfaces. The four-lobed feature gradually evolves into a two-lobed one upon increasing temperature, mainly due to the reduced relative contribution of electron Fermi surfaces compared to hole Fermi surfaces for the magnetoresistance. Moreover, angle-dependent Berry p…
Weyl points with monopole charge $\pm 1$ have been extensively studied, however, real materials of multi-Weyl points, whose monopole charges are higher than $1$, have yet to be found. In this Rapid Communication, we show that nodal-line semimetals with nontrivial line connectivity provide natural platforms for realizing Floquet multi-Weyl points. In particular, we show that driving crossing nodal lines by circularly polarized light generates double-Weyl points. Furthermore, we show that monopole combination and annihilation can be observed in crossing-nodal-line semimetals and nodal-chain semi…
The linear positive magnetoresistance (LPMR) is a widely observed phenomenon in topological materials, which is promising for potential applications on topological spintronics. However, its mechanism remains ambiguous yet and the effect is thus uncontrollable. Here, we report a quantitative scaling model that correlates the LPMR with the Berry curvature, based on a ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal CoS2 that bears the largest LPMR of over 500% at 2 Kelvin and 9 Tesla, among known magnetic topological semimetals. In this system, masses of Weyl nodes existing near the Fermi level, revealed by theoret…
We performed calculations of the electronic band structure and the Fermi surface as well as measured the longitudinal resistivity rhoxx(T,H), Hall resistivity rhoxy(T,H) and quantum oscillations of the magnetization as a function of temperature at various magnetic fields for MoO2 with monoclinic crystal structure. The band structure calculations show that MoO2 is a nodal-line semimetal when spin-orbit coupling is ignored. It was found that a large magnetoresistance reaching 5.03x10^4% at 2 K and 9 T, its nearly quadratic field dependence and a field-induced up-turn behavior of rhoxx(T), the ch…
We study the second-order nonlinear optical response of a Weyl semimetal (WSM), i.e. a three-dimensional metal with linear band touchings acting as point-like sources of Berry curvature in momentum space, termed "Weyl-Berry monopoles". We first show that the anomalous second-order photocurrent of WSMs can be elegantly parametrized in terms of Weyl-Berry dipole and quadrupole moments. We then calculate the corresponding charge and node conductivities of WSMs with either broken time-reversal invariance or inversion symmetry. In particular, we predict a universal dissipationless second-order anom…

We study the band topology and the associated linking structure of topological semimetals with nodal lines carrying $Z_{2}$ monopole charges, which can be realized in three-dimensional systems invariant under the combination of inversion $P$ and time reversal $T$ when spin-orbit coupling is negligible. In contrast to the well-known $PT$-symmetric nodal lines protected only by $π$ Berry phase in which a single nodal line can exist, the nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges should always exist in pairs. We show that a pair of nodal lines with $Z_{2}$ monopole charges is created by a {\it dou…
We report an above-room-temperature ferromagnetic state realized in a proximitized Dirac semimetal, which is fabricated by growing typical Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ films on a ferromagnetic garnet with strong perpendicular magnetization. Observed anomalous Hall conductivity with substantially large Hall angles is found to be almost proportional to magnetization and opposite in sign to it. Theoretical calculations based on first-principles electronic structure also demonstrate that the Fermi-level dependent anomalous Hall conductivity reflects the Berry curvature originating in the split Wey…
Berry phase physics is closely related to a number of topological states of matter. Recently discovered topological semimetals are believed to host a nontrivial $π$ Berry phase to induce a phase shift of $\pm 1/8$ in the quantum oscillation ($+$ for hole and $-$ for electron carriers). We theoretically study the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation of Weyl and Dirac semimetals, taking into account their topological nature and inter-Landau band scattering. For a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, the phase shift is found to change nonmonotonically and go beyond known values of $\pm 1/8…
The experimental manifestation of topological effects in bulk materials under ambient conditions, especially those with practical applications, has attracted enormous research interest. Recent discovery of Weyl semimetal provides an ideal material platform for such endeavors. The Berry curvature in a Weyl semimetal becomes singular at the Weyl node, creating an effective magnetic monopole in the k-space. A pair of Weyl nodes carry quantized effective magnetic charges with opposite signs, and therefore, opposite chirality. Although Weyl-point-related signatures such as chiral anomaly and non-cl…
Weyl semimetals are promising quantum materials that offer unique topological properties. Lately, it has been shown that laser-driven electron dynamics have characteristic signatures in two-dimensional and three-dimensional Dirac semimetals. The transition from Dirac to Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either inversion or time-reversal symmetry. The present work shows that the laser-driven electron dynamics in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry has intriguing features in its high-harmonic spectrum. It is found that the parity and magnitude of the non-zero Berry curvatur…
We report the synthesis and magneto-transport measurements on the single crystal of Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$. The de Haas-van Alphen oscillations with multiple frequencies have been clearly observed, from which the small effective masses and nontrivial Berry phase are extracted, implying the possible existence of the Dirac fermions in PdTe$_2$. The planar Hall effect and anisotropic longitudinal resistivity originating from the chiral anomaly and nontrivial Berry phase are observed, providing strong evidence for the nontrivial properties in PdTe$_2$. With the increase of temperature up to 150 …
Topological semimetals are three-dimensional topological states of matter, in which the conduction and valence bands touch at a finite number of points, i.e., the Weyl nodes. Topological semimetals host paired monopoles and antimonopoles of Berry curvature at the Weyl nodes and topologically protected Fermi arcs at certain surfaces. We review our recent works on quantum transport in topological semimetals, according to the strength of the magnetic field. At weak magnetic fields, there are competitions between the positive magnetoresistivity induced by the weak anti-localization effect and nega…
The class of topological semimetals comprises a large pool of compounds. Together they provide a wide platform to realize exotic quasiparticles for example Dirac, nodal line Dirac and Weyl fermions. In this letter, we report the Berry phase, Fermi surface topology and anisotropic magnetoresistance of HfSiS which has recently been predicted to be a nodal line semimetal. This compound contains large carrier density, higher than most of the known semimetals. Massive amplitudes of de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations up to 20 K in 7 T assist us in witnessing nontrivial pi-Berry ph…
Magnetic Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry are expected to generate strong intrinsic anomalous Hall effects, due to their large Berry curvature. Here, we report a magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate Co3Sn2S2 with a quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure consisting of stacked Kagome lattices. This lattice provides an excellent platform for hosting exotic quantum topological states. We observe a negative magnetoresistance that is consistent with the chiral anomaly expected from the presence of Weyl fermions close to the Fermi level. The anomalous Hall conductivity is robust again…
The unambiguous detection of the band topology for topological nodal systems remains an urgent problem in this field. Usually in experiments this relies on the detection for the topological edge modes, which may requires the high demands for the preparation and purifications of the materials and may give ambiguities. In this work, we propose a new approach towards the unambiguous detection of the bulk band crossing nodes of topological nodal systems without evolving the edge mode. The spirit of our proposal is to couple our targeted Hamiltonian to an weak external field $\mathbf {A}$ with a sp…
The recent discovery of magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2 opens up new avenues for research into the interactions between topological orders, magnetism, and electronic correlations. Motivated by the observations of large anomalous Hall effect because of large Berry curvature, we investigate another Berry curvature-induced phenomenon, the anomalous thermal Hall effect in Co3Sn2S2. We study it with and without strain, using a Wannier tight-binding Hamiltonian derived from first principles density functional theory calculations. We first identify this material as a tilted type-I Weyl semimetal bas…
Recently Weyl fermions have attracted increasing interest in condensed matter physics due to their rich phenomenology originated from their nontrivial monopole charges. Here we present a theory of real Dirac points that can be understood as real monopoles in momentum space, serving as a real generalization of Weyl fermions with the reality being endowed by the $PT$ symmetry. The real counterparts of topological features of Weyl semimetals, such as Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem, $2$D sub topological insulators and Fermi arcs, are studied in the $PT$ symmetric Dirac semimetals, and the underlyi…
Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), like its Hall counterpart, is generated by Berry curvature of electrons in solids. Little is known about its response to disorder. In contrast, the link between the amplitude of the ordinary Nernst coefficient and the mean-free-path is extensively documented. Here, by studying Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, a topological half-metallic semimetal hosting sizable and recognizable ordinary and anomalous Nernst responses, we demonstrate an anti-correlation between the amplitude of ANE and carrier mobility. We argue that the observation, paradoxically, establishes the in…
Realization of semimetals with non-trivial topologies such as Dirac and Weyl semimetals, have provided a boost in the study of these quantum materials. Presence of electron correlation makes the system even more exotic due to enhanced scattering of charge carriers, Kondo screening etc. Here, we studied the electronic properties of single crystalline, SmBi employing varied state of the art bulk measurements. Magnetization data reveals two magnetic transitions; an antiferromagnetic order with a Neel temperature of ~ 9 K and a second magnetic transition at a lower temperature (= 7 K). The electri…
Under symmetry breaking, a three-dimensional nodal-line semimetal can turn into a topological insulator or Weyl semimetal, accompanied by the generation of momentum-space Berry curvature. We develop a theory that unifies their circular dichroism and highlights the roles of Berry curvature distribution and light incident direction. Nontrivially, these phases exhibit distinct dichroic optical absorption and radial Hall effects, with characteristic scalings with photon energy and electric field. Our findings offer a new diagnosis tool for examining topological phases of matter.
Although the band topology of ZrGeSe has been studied via magnetic torque technique, the electronic transport behaviors related to the relativistic Fermions in ZrGeSe are still unknown. Here, we first report systematic electronic transport properties of high-quality ZrGeSe single crystals under magnetic fields up to 14 T. Resistivity plateaus of temperature dependent resistivity curves both in the presence and absence of magnetic fields as well as large, non-saturating magnetoresistance in low-temperature region were observed. By analyzing the temperature- and angular-dependent Shubnikov-de Ha…
Vortex magnetic structure in artificial honeycomb lattice provides a unique platform to explore emergent properties due to the additional Berry phase curvature imparted by chiral magnetization to circulating electrons via direct interaction. We argue that while the perpendicularly-aligned magnetic component leads to the quantized flux of monopole at the center of the Berry sphere, the in-plane vortex circulation of magnetization gives rise to unexpected non-trivial topological Berry phase due to the gauge field transformation. The unprecedented effect signifies the importance of vector potenti…
