Gravitational wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) observations of neutron-star-black-hole (NSBH) mergers can provide precise local measurements of the Hubble constant ($H_0$), ideal for resolving the current $H_0$ tension. We perform end-to-end analyses of realistic populations of simulated NSBHs, incorporating both GW and EM selection for the first time. We show that NSBHs could achieve unbiased 1.5-2.4% precision $H_0$ estimates by 2030. The achievable precision is strongly affected by the details of spin precession and tidal disruption, highlighting the need for improved modeling of NSBH mergers.
We constrain cosmological parameters using only Hubble parameter data and quantify the impact of future Hubble parameter measurements on parameter estimation for the most typical dark energy models. We first constrain cosmological parameters using 52 current Hubble parameter data including the Hubble constant measurement from the Hubble Space Telescope. Then we simulate the baryon acoustic oscillation signals from WFIRST (Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope) covering the redshift range of $z\in [0.5, 2]$ and the redshift drift data from E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope) in the redshi…
Gravitational wave (GW) standard sirens may resolve the Hubble tension, provided that standard siren inference of $H_0$ is free from systematic biases. However, standard sirens from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers suffer from two sources of systematic bias, one arising from the anisotropy of GW emission, and the other from the anisotropy of electromagnetic (EM) emission from the kilonova. For an observed sample of BNS mergers, the traditional Bayesian approach to debiasing involves the direct computation of the detection likelihood. This is infeasible for large samples of detected BNS merger…
Gravitational wave (GW) observations of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers can be used to measure luminosity distances and hence, when coupled with estimates for the mergers' host redshifts, infer the Hubble constant, $H_0$. These observations are, however, affected by GW measurement noise, uncertainties in host redshifts and peculiar velocities, and are potentially biased by selection effects and the mis-specification of the cosmological model or the BNS population. The estimation of $H_0$ from samples of BNS mergers with optical counterparts is tested here by using a phenomenological model fo…
Abr: We investigate whether the Hubble sequence can be reproduced by the relics of merger events. We verify that, at zmed=0.65, the abundant population of anomalous starbursts is mainly linked to the local spirals. Their morphologies are dominated by young stars and are related to their ionised-gas kinematics. We show that both morphologies and kinematics can be reproduced by using gas modelling from Barnes' (2002) study of major mergers. Using our modelling to estimate the gas-to-stars transformation during a merger, we identify the gas fraction in the progenitors to be generally above 50%. A…
Recent studies have argued that galaxy mergers are not important drivers for the evolution of S0's, on the basis that mergers cannot preserve the coupling between the bulge and disk scale-lengths observed in these galaxies and the lack of correlation of their ratio with the S0 Hubble type. We investigate whether the remnants resulting from collision-less N-body simulations of intermediate and minor mergers onto S0 galaxies evolve fulfilling global structural relations observed between the bulges and disks of these galaxies. Different initial bulge-to-disk ratios of the primary S0 have been con…
Galaxy mergers are considered as questionable mechanisms for the evolution of lenticular galaxies (S0's), on the basis that even minor ones induce structural changes that are difficult to reconcile with the strong bulge-disk coupling observed in the photometric scaling relations of S0's. We check if the evolution induced onto S0's by dry intermediate and minor mergers can reproduce their photometric scaling relations, analysing the bulge-disk decompositions of the merger simulations presented in Eliche-Moral et al. (2012). The mergers induce an evolution in the photometric planes compatible wi…
Measuring time delays from strongly lensed supernovae (SNe) is emerging as a novel and independent tool for estimating the Hubble constant $(H_0)$. This is very important given the recent discord in the value of $H_0$ from two methods that probe different distance ranges. The success of this technique will rely of our ability to discover strongly lensed SNe with measurable time delays. Here, we present the magnifications and the time delays for the multiply-imaged galaxies behind the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) galaxy clusters, by using recently published lensing models. Continuing on our pre…
Following the detection of the GW170817 signal and its associated electromagnetic emissions, we discuss the prospects of the local Hubble parameter measurement using double neutron stars (DNSs). The kilonova emissions of GW170817 are genuinely unique in terms of the rapid evolution of color and magnitude and we expect that, for a good fraction $\gtrsim 50\%$ of the DNS events within $\sim 200$Mpc, we could identify their host galaxies, using their kilonovae. At present, the estimated DNS merger rate $(1.5^{+3.2}_{-1.2})\times 10^{-6} {\rm Mpc^{-3} yr^{-1}}$ has a large uncertainty. But, if it …
The Hubble constant ($H_0$) estimated from the local Cepheid-supernova (SN) distance ladder is in 3-$σ$ tension with the value extrapolated from cosmic microwave background (CMB) data assuming the standard cosmological model. Whether this tension represents new physics or systematic effects is the subject of intense debate. Here, we investigate how new, independent $H_0$ estimates can arbitrate this tension, assessing whether the measurements are consistent with being derived from the same model using the posterior predictive distribution (PPD). We show that, with existing data, the inverse di…
Strong gravitational lensing effect is a powerful tool to probe cosmological models and gravity theories. Recently, the time-delay cosmography from strong lensing and the stellar kinematics of the deflector, which encode the Hubble constant and the post-Newtonian parameter via two distance ratios reflecting the lensing mass and dynamical mass respectively, have been proposed to investigate these two parameters simultaneously. Among strong lensing systems with different sources, strongly lensed fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been proposed as precision probes of the universe since the time delay …
The star formation history of nearby early-type galaxies is investigated via numerical modelling. Idealized hydrodynamical N-body simulations with a star formation prescription are used to study the minor merger process between a giant galaxy (host) and a less massive spiral galaxy (satellite) with reasonable assumptions for the ages and metallicities of the merger progenitors. We find that the evolution of the star formation rate is extended over several dynamical times and shows peaks which correspond to pericentre passages of the satellite. The newly formed stars are mainly located in the c…
We present a test of the statistical method introduced by Bernard F. Shutz in 1986 using only gravitational waves to infer the Hubble constant ($\text{H}_0$) from GW190814, the first high-probability neutron-star--black-hole (NS-BH) merger candidate detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo interferometer. We apply a baseline test of this method to the binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 and find $\text{H}_0 = 70^{+35.0}_{-18.0}$km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ (maximum {\it a posteriori} and 68.3\% highest density posterior interval) for a galaxy $B$…
Gravitational waves observation with electromagnetic counterparts provides an approach to measure the Hubble constant which is also known as the bright siren method. Great hope has been put into this method to arbitrate the Hubble tension. In this study, we apply the simulation tool \GWT\, and modeling of the aLIGO-design background to simulate the bright siren catalogues of sub-threshold double neutron star mergers with potential contamination from noise and dis-pairing between gravitational waves and electromagnetic counterparts. The Hubble constant and other cosmology parameters are thus in…

In this paper, we investigate the expected constraints on the Hubble constant from the gravitational-wave standard sirens, in a cosmological-model-independent way. In the framework of the well-known Hubble law, the GW signal from each detected binary merger in the local universe ($z<0.10$) provides a measurement of luminosity distance $D_L$ and thus the Hubble constant $H_0$. Focusing on the simulated data of gravitational waves from the third-generation gravitational wave detector (the Einstein Telescope, ET), combined with the redshifts determined from electromagnetic counter parts and host …
The joint observation of the gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signal from the binary neutron-star merger GW170817 allowed for a new independent measurement of the Hubble constant $H_0$, albeit with an uncertainty of about 15\% at 1$σ$. Observations of similar sources with a network of future detectors will allow for more precise measurements of $H_0$. These, however, are currently largely limited by the intrinsic degeneracy between the luminosity distance and the inclination of the source in the gravitational-wave signal. We show that the higher-order modes in gravitational waves can be …

There exist six possible polarization modes of gravitational waves in general metric theory of gravity, while two tensor polarization modes are allowed in general relativity. The properties and number of polarization modes depend on gravity theories. The number of the detectors needs to be equal to the number of the polarization modes of the gravitational waves for separation of polarizations basically. However, a single detector having great sensitivity at lower frequency could be effectively regarded as a virtual detector network including a set of detectors along its trajectory due to a lon…
We examine in this paper a stellar mass selected sample of galaxies at 1 < z < 3 within the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, utilising WFC3 imaging to study the rest-frame optical morphological distribution of galaxies at this epoch. We measure how apparent morphologies (disk, elliptical, peculiar) correlate with physical properties, such as quantitative structure and spectral-types. One primary result is that apparent morphology does not correlate strongly with stellar populations, nor with galaxy structure at this epoch, suggesting a chaotic formation history for Hubble types at z > 1. By using a lo…
The simultaneous detection of gravitational waves and light from the binary neutron star merger GW170817 led to independent measurements of distance and redshift, providing a direct estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ that does not rely on a cosmic distance ladder nor assumes a specific cosmological model. By using gravitational waves as ''standard sirens'', this approach holds promise to arbitrate the existing tension between the $H_0$ value inferred from the cosmic microwave background and those obtained from local measurements. However, the known degeneracy in the gravitational-wave analy…
Dual active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and offset AGNs are kpc-scale separation supermassive black holes pairs created during galaxy mergers, where both or one of the black holes are AGNs, respectively. These dual and offset AGNs are valuable probes of the link between mergers and AGNs but are challenging to identify. Here we present Chandra/ACIS observations of 12 optically-selected dual AGN candidates at z < 0.34, where we use the X-rays to identify AGNs. We also present HST/WFC3 observations of 10 of these candidates, which reveal any stellar bulges accompanying the AGNs. We discover a dual AGN…
Detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from neutron star-black hole (NSBH) standard sirens can provide local measurements of the Hubble constant ($H_0$), regardless of the detection of an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart: The presence of matter terms in GWs breaks the degeneracy between mass parameters and redshift, allowing simultaneous measurement of both the luminosity distance and redshift. Although the tidally disrupted NSBH systems can have EM emission, the detection prospects of an EM counterpart will be limited to $z < 0.8$ in the optical, in the era of the next generation GW detectors…
Observational evidence for black hole spin down has been found in the normalized light curves of long GRBs in the BATSE catalogue. Over the duration $T_{90}$ of the burst, matter swept up by the central black hole is susceptible to non-axisymmetries producing gravitational radiation with a negative chirp. A time sliced matched filtering method is introduced to capture phase-coherence on intermediate timescales, $τ$, here tested by injection of templates into experimental strain noise, $h_n(t)$. For TAMA 300, $h_n(f)\simeq 10^{-21}$ Hz$^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ at $f=1$ kHz gives a sensitivity distance …
So far large and different data sets revealed the accelerated expansion rate of the Universe, which is usually explained in terms of dark energy. The nature of dark energy is not yet known, and several models have been introduced: a non zero cosmological constant, a potential energy of some scalar field, effects related to the non homogeneous distribution of matter, or effects due to alternative theories of gravity. Recently, a tension with the flat ΛCDM model has been discovered using a high-redshift Hubble diagram of supernovae, quasars, and gamma-ray bursts. Here we use the Union2 type Ia s…
Primordial black holes may encode the conditions of the early universe, and may even constitute a significant fraction of cosmological dark matter. Their existence has yet to be established. However, black holes with masses below $\sim1~\mathrm{M}_\odot$ cannot form as an endpoint of stellar evolution, so the detection of even one such object would be a smoking gun for new physics, and would constitute evidence that at least a fraction of the dark matter consists of primordial black holes. Gravitational wave detectors are capable of making a definitive discovery of this kind by detecting merge…

Gravlenses are efficiently explored for detecting the most distant galaxies (up to z=10 redshifts). As an example of the role played by gravlenses we refer to the observation of the galaxy merger at z=3 (Borys, et al; Berciano Alba, et al). We derived solutions for the Smoluchowski kinetic equation for the mass function of galaxies, which describes mergers in differential approximation (minor mergers). It is shown that the evolution of the slope of luminosity function observed in the Ultra Deep Hubble Field (Bouwence et al) can be described as a result of explosive evolution driven by galaxy m…
The detection of GW170817 and the identification of its host galaxy have allowed for the first standard-siren measurement of the Hubble constant, with an uncertainty of $\sim 14\%$. As more detections of binary neutron stars with redshift measurement are made, the uncertainty will shrink. The dominating factors will be the number of joint detections and the uncertainty on the luminosity distance of each event. Neutron star black hole mergers are also promising sources for advanced LIGO and Virgo. If the black hole spin induces precession of the orbital plane, the degeneracy between luminosity …
Multi-messenger observations of binary neutron star mergers offer a promising path towards resolution of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) tension, provided their constraints are shown to be free from systematics such as the Malmquist bias. In the traditional Bayesian framework, accounting for selection effects in the likelihood requires calculation of the expected number (or fraction) of detections as a function of the parameters describing the population and cosmology; a potentially costly and/or inaccurate process. This calculation can, however, be bypassed completely by performing the inference …

With the detection of gravitational wave (GW) GW170817 and its associated electromagnetic (EM) counterparts from a binary neutron star (NS) merger, the "standard siren" method for Hubble-constant measurements is expected to play a role in the Hubble-constant tension in the next few years. One intriguing proposal put forward in multiple studies is to use an NS merger's optical counterpart, known as a kilonova, as a standard candle, because its absolute magnitude can in principle be calculated from simulations. In this work, I detail the statistical framework for performing joint standard-candle…
We identify four rare "jellyfish" galaxies in Hubble Space Telescope imagery of the major merger cluster Abell 2744. These galaxies harbor trails of star-forming knots and filaments which have formed in-situ in gas tails stripped from the parent galaxies, indicating they are in the process of being transformed by the environment. Further evidence for rapid transformation in these galaxies comes from their optical spectra, which reveal starburst, poststarburst and AGN features. Most intriguingly, three of the jellyfish galaxies lie near ICM features associated with a merging "Bullet-like" subcl…
The observation of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by LIGO/VIRGO and the associated electromagnetic counterpart provides a high precision test of orbital dynamics, and therefore a new and sensitive probe of extra forces and new radiative degrees of freedom. Axions are one particularly well-motivated class of extensions to the Standard Model leading to new forces and sources of radiation, which we focus on in this paper. Using an effective field theory (EFT) approach, we calculate the first post-Newtonian corrections to the orbital dynamics, radiated power, and gravitation…
Detection of massive binary black hole (BBH) mergers at high redshifts is a target for LISA space mission. While the individual masses of a BBH merger are redshifted, the mass ratio of BBH mergers is independent of their redshift. Therefore, if there is an independent correlation between the mass ratio and redshift, such a relationship can be used to i) infer the redshift of the merging binaries, and together with the luminosity distance measurement ($D_L$), constrain the expansion rate of the universe at high redshifts $H(z)$, and ii) constrain models of supermassive black hole seed formation…
The recent report of an association of the gravitational-wave (GW) binary black hole (BBH) merger GW190521 with a flare in the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) J124942.3+344929 has generated tremendous excitement. However, GW190521 has one of the largest localization volumes amongst all of the GW events detected so far. The 90\% localization volume likely contains $7,400$ unobscured AGN brighter than $g \leq 20.5$ AB mag, and it results in a $\gtrsim 70\%$ probability of chance coincidence for an AGN flare consistent with the GW event. We present a Bayesian formalism to estimate the confidence of …
We develop a method for implementing a proposal on utilizing knowledge of neutron star (NS) equation of state (EoS) for inferring the Hubble constant from a population of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. This method is useful in exploiting BNSs as standard sirens when their redshifts are not available. Gravitational wave (GW) signals from compact object binaries provide a direct measurement of their luminosity distances, but not their redshifts. Unlike in the past, here we employ a realistic EoS parametrization in a Bayesian framework to simultaneously measure the Hubble constant and refine …
Large-area sky surveys show that massive galaxies undergo at least one major merger in a Hubble time. Ongoing pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments are aimed at measuring the gravitational wave (GW) emission from binary supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centres of galaxy merger remnants. In this paper, using the latest observational estimates for a range of galaxy properties and scaling relations, we predict the amplitude of the GW background generated by the binary SMBH population. We also predict the numbers of individual binary SMBH GW sources. We predict the characteristic strain amp…

Primordial black holes (PBHs) are dark matter candidates that span broad mass ranges from $10^{-17}$ $M_\odot$ to $\sim 100$ $M_\odot$. We show that the stochastic gravitational wave background can be a powerful window for the detection of sub-solar mass PBHs and shed light on their formation channel via third-generation gravitational wave detectors such as Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope. By using the mass distribution of the compact objects and the redshift evolution of the merger rates, we can distinguish astrophysical sources from PBHs and will be able to constrain the fraction …
The multi-messenger data of neutron star merger events are promising for constraining the Hubble constant. So far, GW170817 is still the unique gravitational wave event with multi-wavelength electromagnetic counterparts. In particular, its radio and X-ray emission have been measured in the past $\sim 3-5$ years. In this work, we fit the long-lasting X-ray, optical, and radio afterglow light curves of GW170817/GRB 170817A, including the forward shock radiation from both the decelerating relativistic GRB outflow and the sub-relativistic kilonova outflow (though whether the second component contr…
Gravitational wave (GW) signals from compact binary coalescences can be used as standard sirens to constrain cosmological parameters if their redshift can be measured independently. However, mergers of stellar binary black holes (BBHs) may not have electromagnetic counterparts and thus have no direct redshift measurements. These dark sirens may be still used to statistically constrain cosmological parameters by combining their GW measured luminosity distances and localization with deep redshift surveys of galaxies around it. We investigate this dark siren method in detail by using mock BBH and…
The joint detection of gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation from the binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817 has provided unprecedented insight into a wide range of physical processes: heavy element synthesis via the $r$-process; the production of relativistic ejecta; the equation of state of neutron stars and the nature of the merger remnant; the binary coalescence timescale; and a measurement of the Hubble constant via the "standard siren" technique. In detail, all of these results depend on the distance to the host galaxy of the merger event, NGC4993. In this paper we measure…

Observations of neutron-star mergers based on distinct messengers, including gravitational waves and electromagnetic signals, can be used to study the behavior of matter denser than an atomic nucleus, and to measure the expansion rate of the Universe described by the Hubble constant. We perform a joint analysis of the gravitational-wave signal GW170817 with its electromagnetic counterparts AT2017gfo and GRB170817A, and the gravitational-wave signal GW190425, both originating from neutron-star mergers. We combine these with previous measurements of pulsars using X-ray and radio observations, an…
Recent observations have accumulated compelling evidence that some short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) are associated with the mergers of neutron star (NS) binaries. This would indicate that the SGRB event is associated with a gravitational-wave (GW) signal corresponding to the final inspiral of the compact binary. In addition, the radioactive decay of elements produced in NS binary mergers may result in transients visible in the optical and infrared with peak luminosities on hours-days timescales. Simultaneous observations of the inspiral GWs and signatures in the electromagnetic band may allow us…
We use a joint optical/X-ray analysis to constrain the geometry and history of the ongoing merging event in the massive galaxy cluster MACSJ0416.1-2403 (z=0.397). Our investigation of cluster substructure rests primarily on a combined strong- and weak-lensing mass reconstruction based on the deep, high-resolution images obtained for the Hubble Frontier Fields initiative. To reveal the system's dynamics, we complement this lensing analysis with a study of the intra-cluster gas using shallow Chandra data, and a three-dimensional model of the distribution and motions of cluster galaxies derived f…

We discuss two approaches to searches for gravitational-wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of binary neutron star mergers. The first approach relies on triggering archival searches of GW detector data based on detections of EM transients. We introduce a quantitative approach to evaluate the improvement to GW detector reach due to the extra information gained from the EM transient and the increased confidence in the presence of a signal from a binary merger. We also advocate utilizing other transients in addition to short gamma ray bursts. The second approach involves following up …
