Let $C$ be a $(n,q^{2k},n-k+1)_{q^2}$ additive MDS code which is linear over ${\mathbb F}_q$. We prove that if $n \geqslant q+k$ and $k+1$ of the projections of $C$ are linear over ${\mathbb F}_{q^2}$ then $C$ is linear over ${\mathbb F}_{q^2}$. We use this geometrical theorem, other geometric arguments and some computations to classify all additive MDS codes over ${\mathbb F}_q$ for $q \in \{4,8,9\}$. We also classify the longest additive MDS codes over ${\mathbb F}_{16}$ which are linear over ${\mathbb F}_4$. In these cases, the classifications not only verify the MDS conjecture for additive codes, but also confirm there are no additive non-linear MDS codes which perform as well as their linear counterparts. These results imply that the quantum MDS conjecture holds for $q \in \{ 2,3\}$.
The MacWilliams Extension Theorem states that each linear isometry of a linear code extends to a monomial map. Unlike the linear codes, in general, additive codes do not have the extension property. In this paper, an analogue of the extension theorem for additive codes in the case of additive MDS codes is proved. More precisely, it is shown that for almost all additive MDS codes their additive isometries extend to isometries of the ambient space.
A subset $S$ of $\{0,1,...,2t-1\}^n$ is called a $t$-fold MDS code if every line in each of $n$ base directions contains exactly $t$ elements of $S$. The adjacency graph of a $t$-fold MDS code is not connected if and only if the characteristic function of the code is the repetition-free sum of the characteristic functions of $t$-fold MDS codes of smaller lengths. In the case $t=2$, the theory has the following application. The union of two disjoint $(n,4^{n-1},2)$ MDS codes in $\{0,1,2,3\}^n$ is a double-MDS-code. If the adjacency graph of the double-MDS-code is not connected, then the double-…
A $q$-ary maximum distance separable (MDS) code $C$ with length $n$, dimension $k$ over an alphabet $\mathcal{A}$ of size $q$ is a set of $q^k$ codewords that are elements of $\mathcal{A}^n$, such that the Hamming distance between two distinct codewords in $C$ is at least $n-k+1$. Sets of mutually orthogonal Latin squares of orders $q\leq 9$, corresponding to two-dimensional \mbox{$q$-}ary MDS codes, and $q$-ary one-error-correcting MDS codes for $q\leq 8$ have been classified in earlier studies. These results are used here to complete the classification of all $7$-ary and $8$-ary MDS codes wi…
Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are very important in both theory and practice. There is a classical construction of a family of $[2^m+1, 2u-1, 2^m-2u+3]$ MDS codes for $1 \leq u \leq 2^{m-1}$, which are cyclic, reversible and BCH codes over $\mathrm{GF}(2^m)$. The objective of this paper is to study the quaternary subfield subcodes and quaternary subfield codes of a subfamily of the MDS codes for even $m$. A family of quaternary cyclic codes is obtained. These quaternary codes are distance-optimal in some cases and very good in general. Furthermore, infinite families of $3$-designs fro…
The study of MDS self-dual codes has attracted lots of attention in recent years. There are many papers on determining existence of $q-$ary MDS self-dual codes for various lengths. There are not existence of $q-$ary MDS self-dual codes of some lengths, even these lengths $< q$. We generalize MDS Euclidean self-dual codes to near MDS Euclidean self-dual codes and near MDS isodual codes. And we obtain many new near MDS isodual codes from extended negacyclic duadic codes and we obtain many new MDS Euclidean self-dual codes from MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. We generalize MDS Hermitian self-dual …
In this paper, we study the weight spectrum of linear codes with \emph{super-linear} field size and use the probabilistic method to show that for nearly all such codes, the corresponding weight spectrum is very close to that of a maximum distance separable (MDS) code.
For a positive integer $b\ge2$, the $b$-symbol code is a new coding framework proposed to combat $b$-errors in $b$-symbol read channels. Especially, the $2$-symbol code is called a symbol-pair code. Remarkably, a classical maximum distance separable (MDS) code is also an MDS $b$-symbol code. Recently, for any MDS code $\mathcal{C}$, Ma and Luo determined the symbol-pair weight distribution of $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, by calculating the number of solutions for some equations and utilizing some shortened codes of $\mathcal{C}$, we give the connection between the $b$-weight distribution and …
The Doob graph $D(m,n)$, where $m>0$, is the direct product of $m$ copies of The Shrikhande graph and $n$ copies of the complete graph $K_4$ on $4$ vertices. The Doob graph $D(m,n)$ is a distance-regular graph with the same parameters as the Hamming graph $H(2m+n,4)$. In this paper we consider MDS codes in Doob graphs with code distance $d \ge 3$. We prove that if $2m+n>6$ and $2<d<2m+n$, then there are no MDS codes with code distance $d$. We characterize all MDS codes with code distance $d \ge 3$ in Doob graphs $D(m,n)$ when $2m+n \le 6$. We characterize all MDS codes in $D(m,n)$ with code di…
The main conjecture on maximum distance separable (MDS) codes states that, execpt for some special cases, the maximum length of a q-ary linear MDS code is q+1. This conjecture does not hold true for near maximum distance separable codes because of the existence of q-ary near MDS elliptic codes having length bigger than q+1. An interesting related question is whether a near MDS elliptic code can be extended to a longer near MDS code. Our results are some non-extendability results and an alternative and simpler construction for certain known near MDS elliptic codes.
We study the problem of classifying deep holes of Reed-Solomon codes. We show that this problem is equivalent to the problem of classifying MDS extensions of Reed-Solomon codes by one digit. This equivalence allows us to improve recent results on the former problem. In particular, we classify deep holes of Reed-Solomon codes of dimension greater than half the alphabet size. We also give a complete classification of deep holes of Reed Solomon codes with redundancy three in all dimensions.
In this paper, we investigate maximum distance separable (MDS) codes based group coded caching in fog radio access networks (F-RANs). The goal is to minimize the average fronthaul rate under nonuniform file popularity. Firstly, an MDS codes and file grouping based coded placement scheme is proposed to provide coded packets and allocate more cache to the most popular files simultaneously. Next, a fog access point (F-AP) grouping based coded delivery scheme is proposed to meet the requests for files from different groups. Furthermore, a closed-form expression of the average fronthaul rate is der…
Self-dual maximum distance separable codes (self-dual MDS codes) and self-dual near MDS codes are very important in coding theory and practice. Thus, it is interesting to construct self-dual MDS or self-dual near MDS codes. In this paper, we not only give check matrices of dual codes of twisted generalized Reed-Solomon codes (TGRS codes) but also present the efficient and necessary condition of self-dual TGRS codes. Moreover, we construct several classes of self-dual MDS or self-dual near MDS codes from TGRS codes.
A $q$-ary code of length $n$, size $M$, and minimum distance $d$ is called an $(n,M,d)_q$ code. An $(n,q^{k},n-k+1)_q$ code is called a maximum distance separable (MDS) code. In this work, some MDS codes over small alphabets are classified. It is shown that every $(k+d-1,q^k,d)_q$ code with $k\geq 3$, $d \geq 3$, $q \in \{5,7\}$ is equivalent to a linear code with the same parameters. This implies that the $(6,5^4,3)_5$ code and the $(n,7^{n-2},3)_7$ MDS codes for $n\in\{6,7,8\}$ are unique. The classification of one-error-correcting $8$-ary MDS codes is also finished; there are $14$, $8$, $4$…
MDS codes and self-dual codes are important families of classical codes in coding theory. It is of interest to investigate MDS self-dual codes. The existence of MDS self-dual codes over finite field $F_q$ is completely solved for $q$ is even. In this paper, for finite field with odd characteristic, we construct some new classes of MDS self-dual codes by (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon codes.
Systematic constructions of MDS self-dual codes is widely concerned. In this paper, we consider the constructions of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes from short length. Indeed, the exact constructions of MDS Euclidean self-dual codes from short length ($n=3,4,5,6$) are given. In general, we construct more new of $q$-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes from MDS self-dual codes of known length via generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS for short) codes and extended GRS codes.
Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are optimal where the minimum distance cannot be improved for a given length and code size. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields were introduced in 2017, which are generalization of Reed-Solomon codes. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes can be applied in cryptography which prefer the codes with large minimum distance. MDS codes can be constructed from twisted Reed-Solomon codes, and most of them are not equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper, we first generalize twisted Reed-Solomon codes to generalized twisted Reed-Solomon codes, then we give s…
MDS self-dual codes have nice algebraic structures and are uniquely determined by lengths. Recently, the construction of MDS self-dual codes of new lengths has become an important and hot issue in coding theory. In this paper, we develop the existing theory and construct six new classes of MDS self-dual codes. Together with our constructions, the proportion of all known MDS self-dual codes relative to possible MDS self-dual codes generally exceed 57\%. As far as we know, this is the largest known ratio. Moreover, some new families of MDS self-orthogonal codes and MDS almost self-dual codes are…
MDS codes are elegant constructions in coding theory and have mode important applications in cryptography, network coding, distributed data storage, communication systems et. In this study, a method is given which MDS codes are lifted to a higher finite field. The presented method satisfies the protection of the distance and creating the MDS code over the $F_q$ by using MDS code over $F_p.$
In this paper, we construct MDS Euclidean self-dual codes which are extended cyclic duadic codes. And we obtain many new MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. We also construct MDS Hermitian self-dual codes from generalized Reed-Solomon codes and constacyclic codes. And we give some results on Hermitian self-dual codes, which are the extended cyclic duadic codes.
Let $M_{q}(k)$ be the maximum length of MDS codes with parameters $q,k$. In this paper, the properties of $M_{q}(k)$ are studied, and some new upper bounds of $M_{q}(k)$ are obtained. Especially we obtain that $M_{q}(q-1)\leq q+2(q\equiv4(mod 6)), M_{q}(q-2)\leq q+1(q\equiv4(mod 6)), M_{q}(k)\leq q+k-3 (q=36(5s+1), s\in N$ and $ k=6,7).
Recently, Roth and Skachek proposed two methods for constructing nearly maximum-distance separable (MDS) expander codes. We show that through the simple modification of using mixed-alphabet codes derived from MDS codes as constituent codes in their code designs, one can obtain nearly MDS codes of significantly smaller alphabet size, albeit at the expense of a (very slight) reduction in code rate.
Quantum maximal-distance-separable (MDS) codes form an important class of quantum codes. To get $q$-ary quantum MDS codes, it suffices to find linear MDS codes $C$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ satisfying $C^{\perp_H}\subseteq C$ by the Hermitian construction and the quantum Singleton bound. If $C^{\perp_{H}}\subseteq C$, we say that $C$ is a dual-containing code. Many new quantum MDS codes with relatively large minimum distance have been produced by constructing dual-containing constacyclic MDS codes (see \cite{Guardia11}, \cite{Kai13}, \cite{Kai14}). These works motivate us to make a careful study…
Recently, the construction of new MDS Euclidean self-dual codes has been widely investigated. In this paper, for square q, we utilize generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and their extended codes to provide four generic families of q-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes. In particular, for large square q, our constructions take up a proportion of generally more than 34% in all the possible lengths of q-ary MDS Euclidean self-dual codes, which is larger than the previous results. Moreover, two new families of MDS Euclidean self-orthogonal codes and two new families of MDS Euclidean almost self-dua…
The mds (maximum distance separable) conjecture claims that a nontrivial linear mds $[n,k]$ code over the finite field $GF(q)$ satisfies $n \leq (q + 1)$, except when $q$ is even and $k = 3$ or $k = q- 1$ in which case it satisfies $n \leq (q + 2)$. For given field $GF(q)$ and any given $k$, series of mds $[q+1,k]$ codes are constructed. Any $[n,3]$ mds or $[n,n-3]$ mds code over $GF(q)$ must satisfy $n\leq (q+1)$ for $q$ odd and $n\leq (q+2)$ for $q$ even. For even $q$, mds $[q+2,3]$ and mds $[q+2, q-1]$ codes are constructed over $GF(q)$. The codes constructed have efficient encoding and dec…
Maximum-distance separable (MDS) convolutional codes form an optimal family of convolutional codes, the study of which is of great importance. There are very few general algebraic constructions of MDS convolutional codes. In this paper, we construct a large family of unit-memory MDS convolutional codes over $\F$ with flexible parameters. Compared with previous works, the field size $q$ required to define these codes is much smaller. The construction also leads to many new strongly-MDS convolutional codes, an important subclass of MDS convolutional codes proposed and studied in \cite{GL2}. Many…
We will construct an MDS(= the most distance separable) code $C$ which admits a decomposition such that every factor is still MDS. An effective way of decoding will be also discussed.
We construct MDS Euclidean and Hermitian self-dual codes over large finite fields of odd and even characteristics. Our codes arise from cyclic and negacyclic duadic codes.
Quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes are an important class of quantum codes. In this paper, using constacyclic codes and Hermitain construction, we construct some new quantum MDS codes of the form $q=2am+t$, $n=\frac{q^{2}+1}{a}$. Most of these quantum MDS codes are new in the sense that their parameters are not covered be the codes available in the literature.
In this paper, a criterion of MDS Euclidean self-orthogonal codes is presented. New MDS Euclidean self-dual codes and self-orthogonal codes are constructed via this criterion. In particular, among our constructions, for large square $q$, about $\frac{1}{8}\cdot q$ new MDS Euclidean (almost) self-dual codes over $\F_q$ can be produced. Moreover, we can construct about $\frac{1}{4}\cdot q$ new MDS Euclidean self-orthogonal codes with different even lengths $n$ with dimension $\frac{n}{2}-1$.
MDS self-dual codes over finite fields have attracted a lot of attention in recent years by their theoretical interests in coding theory and applications in cryptography and combinatorics. In this paper we present a series of MDS self-dual codes with new length by using generalized Reed-Solomon codes and extended generalized Reed-Solomon codes as the candidates of MDS codes and taking their evaluation sets as an union of cyclotomic classes. The conditions on such MDS codes being self-dual are expressed in terms of cyclotomic numbers.
Partial MDS (PMDS) and sector-disk (SD) codes are classes of erasure codes that combine locality with strong erasure correction capabilities. We construct PMDS and SD codes where each local code is a bandwidth-optimal regenerating MDS code. The constructions require significantly smaller field size than the only other construction known in literature.
In this paper, we obtain some new results on the existence of MDS self-dual codes utilizing (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields of odd characteristic. For some fixed $q$, our results can produce more classes of MDS self-dual codes than previous works.
Both linear complementary dual (LCD) codes and maximum distance separable (MDS) codes have good algebraic structures, and they have interesting practical applications such as communication systems, data storage, quantum codes, and so on. So far, most of LCD MDS codes have been constructed by employing generalized Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper we construct some classes of new Euclidean LCD MDS codes and Hermitian LCD MDS codes which are not monomially equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes, called LCD MDS codes of non-Reed- Solomon type. Our method is based on the constructions of Beelen et al. (…
The intersection ${\bf C}\bigcap {\bf C}^{\perp_H}$ of a linear code ${\bf C} \subset {\bf F}_{q^2}$ and its Hermitian dual ${\bf C}^{\perp_H}$ is called the Hermitian hull of this code. A linear code ${\bf C} \subset {\bf F}_{q^2}$ satisfying ${\bf C} \subset {\bf C}^{\perp_H}$ is called Hermitian self-orthogonal. Many Hermitian self-orthogonal codes were given for the construction of MDS quantum error correction codes (QECCs). In this paper we prove that for a nonnegative integer $h$ satisfying $0 \leq h \leq k$, a linear Hermitian self-orthogonal $[n, k]_{q^2}$ code is equivalent to a linea…
In this paper, we present three new classes of $q$-ary quantum MDS codes utilizing generalized Reed-Solomon codes satisfying Hermitian self-orthogonal property. Among our constructions, the minimum distance of some $q$-ary quantum MDS codes can be bigger than $\frac{q}{2}+1$. Comparing to previous known constructions, the lengths of codes in our constructions are more flexible.
In this paper, we establish the Singleton bound for pomset block codes ($(Pm,π)$-codes) of length $N$ over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_m$. We give a necessary condition for a code to be MDS in the pomset (block) metric and prove that every MDS $(Pm,π)$-code is an MDS $(P,π)$-code. Then we proceed on to find $I$-perfect and $r$-perfect codes. Further, given an ideal with partial and full counts, we look into how MDS and $I$-perfect codes relate to one another. For chain pomset, we obtain the duality theorem for pomset block codes of length $N$ over $\mathbb{Z}_m$; and, the weight distribution of MDS p…
Quantum maximal-distance-separable (MDS) codes form an important class of quantum codes. It is very hard to construct quantum MDS codes with relatively large minimum distance. In this paper, based on classical constacyclic codes, we construct two classes of quantum MDS codes with parameters $$[[λ(q-1),λ(q-1)-2d+2,d]]_q$$ where $2\leq d\leq (q+1)/2+λ-1$, and $q+1=λr$ with $r$ even, and $$[[λ(q-1),λ(q-1)-2d+2,d]]_q$$ where $2\leq d\leq (q+1)/2+λ/2-1$, and $q+1=λr$ with $r$ odd. The quantum MDS codes exhibited here have parameters better than the ones available in the literature.
Based on the fundamental results on MDS self-dual codes over finite fields constructed via generalized Reed-Solomon codes \cite{JX} and extended generalized Reed-Solomon codes \cite{Yan}, many series of MDS self-dual codes with different length have been obtained recently by a variety of constructions and individual computations. In this paper, we present an unified approach to get several previous results with concise statements and simplified proofs, and some new constructions on MDS self-dual codes. In the conclusion section we raise two open problems.
Algebraic systems are constructed from which series of maximum distance separable (mds) codes are derived. The methods use unit and idempotent schemes.
An $[n, k, n-k+1]$ linear code is called an MDS code. An $[n, k, n-k]$ linear code is said to be almost maximum distance separable (almost MDS or AMDS for short). A code is said to be near maximum distance separable (near MDS or NMDS for short) if the code and its dual code both are almost maximum distance separable. The first near MDS code was the $[11, 6, 5]$ ternary Golay code discovered in 1949 by Golay. This ternary code holds $4$-designs, and its extended code holds a Steiner system $S(5, 6, 12)$ with the largest strength known. In the past 70 years, sporadic near MDS codes holding $t$-d…
A linear code with parameters of the form $[n, k, n-k+1]$ is referred to as an MDS (maximum distance separable) code. A linear code with parameters of the form $[n, k, n-k]$ is said to be almost MDS (i.e., almost maximum distance separable) or AMDS for short. A code is said to be near maximum distance separable (in short, near MDS or NMDS) if both the code and its dual are almost maximum distance separable. Near MDS codes correspond to interesting objects in finite geometry and have nice applications in combinatorics and cryptography. In this paper, seven infinite families of $[2^m+1, 3, 2^m-2…
It is an important task to construct quantum maximum-distance-separable (MDS) codes with good parameters. In the present paper, we provide six new classes of q-ary quantum MDS codes by using generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and Hermitian construction. The minimum distances of our quantum MDS codes can be larger than q/2+1 Three of these six classes of quantum MDS codes have longer lengths than the ones constructed in [1] and [2], hence some of their results can be easily derived from ours via the propagation rule. Moreover, some known quantum MDS codes of specific lengths can be seen as sp…
The Galois hulls of linear codes are a generalization of the Euclidean and Hermitian hulls of linear codes. In this paper, we study the Galois hulls of (extended) GRS codes and present several new constructions of MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions via (extended) GRS codes. Two general methods of constructing MDS codes with Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions by Hermitian or general Galois self-orthogonal (extended) GRS codes are given. Using these methods, some MDS codes with larger dimensions and Galois hulls of arbitrary dimensions can be obtained and relatively strict con…
In this paper we give the structure of constacyclic codes over formal power series and chain rings. We also present necessary and sufficient conditions on the existence of MDS codes over principal ideal rings. These results allow for the construction of infinite families of MDS self-dual codes over finite chain rings, formal power series and principal ideal rings.
This paper is devoted to the study of the construction of new quantum MDS codes. Based on constacyclic codes over Fq2 , we derive four new families of quantum MDS codes, one of which is an explicit generalization of the construction given in Theorem 7 in [22]. We also extend the result of Theorem 3:3 given in [17].
We propose a private information retrieval (PIR) protocol for distributed storage systems with noncolluding nodes where data is stored using an arbitrary linear code. An expression for the PIR rate, i.e., the ratio of the amount of retrieved data per unit of downloaded data, is derived, and a necessary and a sufficient condition for codes to achieve the maximum distance separable (MDS) PIR capacity are given. The necessary condition is based on the generalized Hamming weights of the storage code, while the sufficient condition is based on code automorphisms. We show that cyclic codes and Reed-…
In this paper, we mainly use classical Hermitian self-orthogonal generalized Reed-Solomon codes to construct two new classes of quantum MDS codes. Most of our quantum MDS codes have minimum distance larger than q/2+1. Compared with previously known constructions, these quantum MDS codes in our constructions have large minimum distance and their parameters are not covered by the previous codes.
In this paper, we produce new classes of MDS self-dual codes via (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields of odd characteristic. Among our constructions, there are many MDS self-dual codes with new parameters which have never been reported. For odd prime power $q$ with $q$ square, the total number of lengths for MDS self-dual codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ presented in this paper is much more than those in all the previous results.
