We investigate the 5d transition metal oxide BaOsO$_3$ within a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using a matrix-product-state impurity solver. BaOsO$_3$ has 4 electrons in the t$_{2g}$ shell akin to ruthenates but stronger spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and is thus expected to reveal an interplay of Hund's metal behavior with SOC. We explore the paramagnetic phase diagram as a function of SOC and Hubbard interaction strengths, identifying metallic, band (van-Vleck) insulating and Mott insulating regions. At the physical values of the two couplings we find that BaOsO$_3$ is still situated inside the metallic region and has a moderate quasiparticle renormalization $m^*/m \approx 2$; consistent with specific heat measurements. SOC plays an important role in suppressing electronic correlations (found in the vanishing SOC case) through the splitting of a van-Hove singularity (vHs) close to the Fermi energy, but is insufficient to push the material into an insulating van-Vleck regime. In spite of the strong effect of SOC, BaOsO$_3$ can be best pictured as a moderately correlated Hund's metal.
Using ab initio calculations, we have investigated a cubic perovskite BaOsO3 and a few related compounds that have been synthesized recently and formally have a metallic d^4 configuration. In BaOsO3, which shows obvious 3-dimensional fermiology, a nonmagnetism is induced by a large spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which is precisely equal to an exchange splitting ~0.4 eV of the $t_{2g}$ manifold. However, the inclusion of on-site Coulomb repulsion as small as $U^c$~1.2 eV, only 1/3 of the $t_{2g}$ bandwidth, leads to the emergence of a spin-ordered moment, indicating that this system is on the verge…
The interplay of non-local Coulomb repulsion and Hund's coupling in the d-orbital manifold in frustrated triangular lattices is analyzed by a mutliband extended Hubbard model. We find a rich phase diagram with several competing phases, including a robust pinball liquid phase, which is an unconventional metal characterized by threefold charge order, bad metallic behavior and the emergence of high spin local moments. Our results naturally explain the anomalous charge-ordered metallic state observed in the triangular layered compound AgNiO2. The potential relevance to other triangular transition …
We report a quantum phase transition between orbital-selective Mott states, with different localized orbitals, in a Hund's metals model. Using the density matrix renormalization group, the phase diagram is constructed varying the electronic density and Hubbard $U$, at robust Hund's coupling. We demonstrate that this transition is preempted by charge fluctuations and the emergence of free spinless fermions, as opposed to the magnetically-driven Mott transition. The Luttinger correlation exponent is shown to have a universal value in the strong-coupling phase, whereas it is interaction dependent…
By means of the density functional theory in combination with the dynamical mean-field theory, we tried to examine the electronic structure of hexagonal FeGe, in which the Fe atoms form a quasi-2D layered Kagome lattice. We predict that it is a representative Kagome metal characterized by orbital selective Dirac fermions and extremely flat bands. Furthermore, Fe's 3$d$ electrons are strongly correlated. They exhibit quite apparent signatures of electronic correlation induced by Hund's rule coupling, such as sizable differentiation in band renormalization, non-Fermi-liquid behavior, spin-freezi…
We show that in multi-band metals the correlations are strongly affected by the Hund's rule coupling, which depending on the filling promotes metallic, insulating or bad-metallic behavior. The quasiparticle coherence and the proximity to a Mott insulator are influenced distinctly and, away from single- and half-filling, in opposite ways. A strongly correlated bad-metal far from a Mott phase is found there. We propose a concise classification of 3d and 4d transition-metal oxides within which the ubiquitous occurrence of strong correlations in Ru- and Cr-based oxides, as well as the recently mea…
The physics of weak itinerant ferromagnets is challenging due to their small magnetic moments and the ambiguous role of local interactions governing their electronic properties, many of which violate Fermi liquid theory. While magnetic fluctuations play an important role in the materials' unusual electronic states, the nature of these fluctuations and the paradigms through which they arise remain debated. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to study magnetic fluctuations in the canonical weak itinerant ferromagnet MnSi. Data reveal that short-wavelength magnons continue to propagate until…
We point out the generic competition between the Hund's coupling and the spin-orbit coupling in correlated materials, and this competition leads to an electronic dilemma between the Hund's metal and the relativistic insulators. Hund's metals refer to the fate of the would-be insulators where the Hund's coupling suppresses the correlation and drives the systems into correlated metals. Relativistic Mott insulators refer to the fate of the would-be metals where the relativistic spin-orbit coupling enhances the correlation and drives the systems into Mott insulators. These contradictory trends are…
Interfaces between dissimilar correlated oxides can offer devices with versatile functionalities. In that respect, manipulating and measuring novel physical properties of oxide heterointerfaces are highly desired. Yet, despite extensive studies, obtaining direct information on their momentum-resolved electronic structure remains a great challenge. This is because most correlated interfacial phenomena appear within a few atomic layers from the interface, thus limiting the application of available experimental probes. Here, we utilize atomic-scale epitaxy and photoemission spectroscopy to demons…
In order to explore the effects of structural geometry on properties of correlated metals we investigate the magnetic properties of cubic (3C) and hexagonal (4H) BaRuO$_3$. While the 3C variant of BaRuO$_3$ is ferromagnetic below 60K, the 4H phase does not show any long-range magnetic order, however, there is experimental evidence of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations. Employing a combination of computational tools, namely density-functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we probe the origin of contrasting magnetic properties of BaRuO$_3$ in the 3C and 4H structur…
Hund metals are multi-orbital systems with moderate Coulomb interaction, $U$, and sizeable Hund's rule coupling, $J<U$, that aligns the spins in different orbitals. They show strong correlation effects, like very low Fermi-liquid coherence scales and intriguing incoherent transport regimes, resulting in bad metallic behavior. But to what extent are these strong correlations governed by Mottness, i.e. the blocking of charge fluctuations close to a Mott insulator transition (MIT) induced by $U$, or by Hundness, a new route towards strong correlations induced by $J$? To answer this question, we s…
A van Hove singularity (VHS) often significantly amplifies the electronic instability of a crystalline solid, including correlation-induced phenomena such as Hund's metallicity. We perform a systematic study on the interplay between Hund's coupling and electronic structures with a VHS focusing on Hund's metallicity. We construct a simplified tight-binding model targeting cubic perovskite materials and test the effects of the VHS utilizing dynamical mean-field theory with an exact diagonalization solver. The quasiparticle weight and the low-frequency power exponent of the self-energy provide a …
We show that electron correlations lead to a bad metallic state in chalcogenides FeSe and FeTe despite the intermediate value of the Hubbard repulsion $U$ and Hund's rule coupling $J$. The evolution of the quasi particle weight $Z$ as a function of the interaction terms reveals a clear crossover at $U \simeq$ 2.5 eV. In the weak coupling limit $Z$ decreases for all correlated $d$ orbitals as a function of $U$ and beyond the crossover coupling they become weakly dependent on $U$ while strongly depend on $J$. A marked orbital dependence of the $Z$'s emerges even if in general the orbital-selecti…
Mott-Hubbard and Hund electron correlations have been realized thus far in separate classes of materials. Here, we show that a single moiré homobilayer encompasses both kinds of physics in a controllable manner. We develop a microscopic multiband model that we solve by dynamical mean-field theory to nonperturbatively address the local many-body correlations. We demonstrate how tuning with twist angle, dielectric screening, and hole density allows us to switch between Mott-Hubbard and Hund correlated states in a twisted WSe$_2$ bilayer. The underlying mechanism is based on controlling Coulomb-i…
Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has lately attracted considerable attention from the point of view of both fundamental science and device applications. Obviously, establishing the detailed and solid understanding of their magnetism is the key first step toward various applications. Although $\mathrm{Fe_3GeTe_2}$ is a representative ferromagnetic (FM) metal in this family, many aspects of its magnetic and electronic behaviors still remain elusive. Here, we report our new finding that $\mathrm{Fe_3GeTe_2}$ is a special type of correlated metal known as 'Hund metal…
Motivated by the recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates RE$_{1-δ}$Sr$_δ$NiO$_2$ (RE$=$Nd, Pr), we study the role of Hund's coupling $J$ in a quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard model which has been on the periphery of the attention. A region of negative effective Coulomb interaction of this model is revealed to be differentiated from three- and five-orbital models in their typical Hund's metal active fillings. We identify distinctive regimes including four different correlated metals, one of which stems from the proximity to a Mott insulator while the other three, wh…
The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-δ Sr δ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical view point, this new class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil new physics in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund's coupling in Ni-d orbitals gives ris…
We study the influence of the lattice structure, the Jahn-Teller effect and the Hund's rule coupling on a metal-insulator transition in AnC60 (A= K, Rb). The difference in lattice structure favors A3C60 (fcc) being a metal and A4C60 (bct) being an insulator, and the coupling to Hg Jahn-Teller phonons favors A4C60 being nonmagnetic. The coupling to Hg (Ag) phonons decreases (increases) the value Uc of the Coulomb integral at which the metal-insulator transition occurs. There is an important partial cancellation between the Jahn-Teller effect and the Hund's rule coupling.
We present an approach based on the dynamical mean field theory which is able to give the excitation spectrum of a triply degenerate Hubbard model with a Hund's exchange invariant under spin rotation. The lattice problem can be mapped onto a local Anderson model containing 64 local eigenstates. This local problem is solved by a generalized non-crossing approximation. The influence of Hund's coupling J is examined in detail for metallic states close to the metal insulator transition. The band-filling is shown to play a crucial role concerning the effect of J on the low energy dynamics.
Previous work on the physical content of exchange correlation functionals that depend on both charge and spin densities is extended to elemental transition metals and a wider range of perovskite transition metal oxides. A comparison of spectra and magnetic moments calculated using exchange correlation functionals depending on charge density only or on both charge and spin densities, as well as the $+U$ and $+J$ extensions of these methods confirms previous conclusions that the spin-dependent part of the exchange correlation functional provides an effective Hund's interaction acting on the tran…
In this work, we address the question of calculating the local effective Coulomb interaction matrix in materials with strong electronic Coulomb interactions from first principles. To this purpose, we implement the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) into a density functional code within the linearized augmented plane wave (LAPW) framework. We apply our approach to the 3d and 4d early transition metal oxides SrMO3 (M=V, Cr, Mn) and (M=Nb, Mo, Tc) in their paramagnetic phases. For these systems, we explicitly assess the differences between two physically motivated low-energy Hamiltonia…
We investigate the dynamical properties of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ at zero and very low temperature using density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory with an exact diagonalization solver. By considering rotationally invariant local interaction, we examine how Hund's coupling and spin-orbit coupling affect the correlated nature of the system. In the absence of Hund's coupling, the system shows a Fermi liquid behavior over the entire range of temperatures we consider. We confirm that the Fermi liquid persists at zero temperature even with nonzero Hund's coupling; however, at sufficient temp…
We study the doping-driven Mott metal-insulator transition for multi-orbital Hubbard models with Hund's exchange coupling at finite temperatures. As in the single-orbital Hubbard model, the transition is of first-order within dynamical mean field theory, with a coexistence region where two solutions can be stabilized. We find, that in the presence of finite Hund's coupling, the insulating phase is connected to a badly metallic phase, which extends to surprisingly large dopings. While fractional power-law behavior of the self-energies on the Matsubara axis is found on both sides of the transiti…
Using a first-principles approach based on density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, we study the electronic properties of a new candidate polar metal SrEuMo$_2$O$_6$. Its electronic structure shares similarities with centrosymmetric SrMoO$_3$ and EuMoO$_3$, from which it may be considered an ordered derivative, but ferroelectric-like distortions of the divalent cations and oxygen anions lift inversion symmetry mediated by an anharmonic lattice interaction in the metallic state. We find that Hund's coupling promotes the effects of electronic correlations owing to the Mo$^{4+}$…
Hund's metals are multi-orbital systems with $3d$ or $4d$ electrons exhibiting both itinerant character and local moments, and they feature Kondo-like screenings of local orbital and spin moments, with suppressed coherence temperature driven by Hund's coupling $J_H$. They often exhibit magnetic order at low temperature, but how the interaction between the Kondo-like screening and long-range magnetic order is manifested in the quasiparticle spectrum remains an open question. Here we present spectroscopic signature of such interaction in a Hund's metal candidate MnSi exhibiting weak ferromagneti…
The Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition is investigated in a two-band Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory. To this end, we use a suitable extension of Wilson's numerical renormalization group for the solution of the effective two-band single-impurity Anderson model. This method is non-perturbative and, in particular, allows to take into account the full exchange part of the Hund's rule coupling between the two orbitals. We discuss in detail the influence of the various Coulomb interactions on thermodynamic and dynamic properties, for both the impurity and the lattice model. Th…
We study the interplay between Mott physics, driven by Coulomb repulsion U, and Hund physics, driven by Hund's coupling J, for a minimal model for Hund metals, the orbital-symmetric three-band Hubbard-Hund model (3HHM) for a lattice filling of 1/3. Hund-correlated metals are characterized by spin-orbital separation (SOS), a Hund's-rule-induced two-stage Kondo-type screening process, in which spin screening occurs at much lower energy scales than orbital screening. By contrast, in Mott-correlated metals, lying close to the phase boundary of a metal-insulator transition, the SOS window becomes n…
Competition of crystal field splitting and Hund's rule coupling in magnetic metal-insulator transitions of half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated by multi-orbital slave-boson mean field theory. We show that with the increase of Coulomb correlation, the system firstly transits from a paramagnetic (PM) metal to a {\it Néel} antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulator, or a nonmagnetic orbital insulator, depending on the competition of crystal field splitting and the Hund's rule coupling. The different AFM Mott insulator, PM metal and orbital insulating phase are none, partially and ful…
A three band model containing the essential physics of transition metal oxides with partially filled t_2g shells is solved in the single-site dynamical mean field approximation, using the full rotationally invariant Slater-Kanamori interactions. We compute the metal-Mott insulator phase diagram in the space of chemical potential and interaction strength, determine the response of the different phases to perturbations which break the orbital symmetry, and establish the regimes in which an orbital selective Mott phase occurs. The results are compared to data on titanates, ruthenates, vanadates a…
We explore the transition to a charge-disproportionated insulating phase in a five-orbital cubic tight-binding model applicable to transition-metal perovskites with a formal $d^4$ occupation of the transition-metal cation, such as ferrates or manganites. We use dynamical mean-field theory to obtain the phase diagram as a function of the average local Coulomb repulsion $U$ and the Hund's coupling $J$. The main structure of the phase diagram follows from the zero band-width (atomic) limit and represents the competition between high-spin and low-spin homogeneous and an inhomogeneous charge-dispro…
We study the characteristic time scales of the fluctuating local moments in Hund's metal systems for different degrees of correlation. By analyzing the dynamical spin susceptibility in the real-time domain via the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we determine the time scales controlling oscillation and damping of on-site fluctuations - a crucial factor for the detection of local moments with different experimental probes. We apply this procedure to realistic many-body calculations of different families of iron-pnictides and chalcogenides, explaining the material-specific trend in the discrepan…
The generalized Hubbard model is an important theoretical model for modeling strongly correlated materials. To be able to theoretically predict the properties of the materials, the model requires Hubbard's $U$ and Hund's $J$ parameter that represent the on-site Coulomb and exchange interaction, respectively. For bare Coulomb interactions, the analytic expression of $U$ and $J$ are analytically described by Racah's $A,B,C$ parameters. However, the values of $U$ are too large for transition-metal-based materials. To obtain more accurate values for realistic materials, we employ a Yukawa-type scr…
Due to the separation between the spin and the orbital screening scales, the normal state of Hund's metals at ambient temperature can be loosely characterized as a partially coherent state with fluctuating spins and quenched orbital moments. With the aim to characterize this situation more precisely, we investigate the Kondo-Kanamori impurity model that describes the low-energy local physics of three-orbital Hund's metals occupied by two or four electrons. Within this model one can diminish the mixed spin-orbital terms and thereby enhance the separation between the two screening scales, allowi…
We investigate a possibility of Hund's metal behavior in the Hubbard model with asymmetric density of states having peak(s). Specifically, we consider the degenerate two-band model and compare its results to the five-band model with realistic density of states of iron and nickel, showing that the obtained results are more general, provided that the hybridization between states of different symmetry is sufficiently small. We find that quasiparticle damping and the formation of local magnetic moments due to Hund's exchange interaction are enhanced by both, the density of states asymmetry, which …
We study the finite-temperature properties of the half-filled two-band Hubbard model in the presence of Hund's rule coupling and orbital anisotropy. We use the mean-field treatment of the $Z_2$ slave-spin theory with a finite-temperature extension of the zero-temperature gauge variable previously developed by Hassan and de' Medici http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.81.035106}{Phys. Rev. B {\bf 81}, 035106 (2010)}]. We consider the instability of the Fermi liquid phases and how it is enhanced by the Hund's rule. We identify paramagnetic solutions that have zero quasi-particle weight with bad me…
Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ is isostructural to the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ but with two electrons instead of two holes in the Mo/Ru-t$_{2g}$ orbitals. Both materials are Hund's metals, but while Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has a van Hove singularity in close proximity to the Fermi surface, the van Hove singularity of Sr$_2$MoO$_4$ is far from the Fermi surface. By using density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory we determine the relative influence of van Hove and Hund's metal physics on the correlation properties. We show that theoretically predicted signatures of Hund's metal physics occur …
We show, by means of dynamical mean-field theory calculations, that the experimental fingerprints of the nematic order in iron-based superconductors are intrinsically connected with the electronic correlations in the Hund's correlated metallic state and they can not be accessed via a renormalized quasiparticle picture. In particular, our results show that: (i) in a metal in which correlations are dominated by the Hund's coupling the nematic ordering does not produce a rigid energy shift in the photoemission spectra, but a much richer spectral weight redistribution which mirrors the experimenta…
We analyze the electronic properties of interacting crystal field split three band systems. Using a rotationally invariant slave boson approach we analyze the behavior of the electronic mass renormalization as a function of the intralevel repulsion $U$, the Hund's coupling $J$, the crystal field splitting, and the number of electrons per site $n$. We first focus on the case in which two of the bands are identical and the levels of the third one are shifted by $Δ>0$ with respect to the former. We find an increasing quasiparticle mass differentiation between the bands, for system away from half-…
We study the emergence of quasiparticles in Hund's metals with an SU($M$)$\times$SU($N$)-symmetric Kondo impurity model carrying both spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We show that the coupling of the impurity spin to the conduction electrons can be \emph{ferromagnetic}, notably for hole-doped iron pnictides. We derive the weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) equations for arbitrary representations of SU($M$)$\times$SU($N$). A ferromagnetic spin coupling results in a protracted RG flow, accounting for the surprising particle-hole asymmetry that is observed in the iron-pnictide systems. …
We analyze a simple model containing the physical ingredients of a Hund's metal, the local spin fluctuations with power-law correlators, $(Ω_0/|Ω|)^γ$, with $γ$ greater than one, interacting with electronic quasiparticles. While the critical temperature and the gap change significantly with varying parameters, the $2Δ_{max}/k_BT_c$ remains close to twice the BCS value in agreement with experimental observations in the iron-based superconductors (FeSC).
We analyze multi-orbital Hubbard models describing Hund's metals, focusing on the ubiquitous occurrence of a charge instability, signalled by a divergent/negative electronic compressibility, in a range of doping from the half-filled Mott insulator corresponding to the frontier between Hund's and normal metals. We show that the breaking of rotational invariance favors this instability: both spin-anisotropy in the interaction and crystal-field splitting among the orbitals make the instability zone extend to larger dopings, making it relevant for real materials like iron-based superconductors. Th…
The recently proposed theoretical concept of a Hund's metal is regarded as a key to explain the exotic magnetic and electronic behavior occuring in the strongly correlated electron systems of multiorbital metallic materials. However, a tuning of the abundance of parameters, that determine these systems, is experimentally challenging. Here, we investigate the smallest possible realization of a Hund's metal, a Hund's impurity, realized by a single magnetic impurity strongly hybridized to a metallic substrate. We experimentally control all relevant parameters including magnetic anisotropy and hyb…
To clarify the nature of correlations in Hund metals and its relationship with Mott physics we analyze the electronic correlations in multiorbital systems as a function of intraorbital interaction U, Hund's coupling JH and electronic filling n. We show that the main process behind the enhancement of correlations in Hund metals is the suppression of the double-occupancy of a given orbital, as it also happens in the Mott-insulator at half-filling. However, contrary to what happens in Mott correlated states the reduction of the quasiparticle weight Z with JH can happen on spite of increasing char…
Physical properties of multi-orbital materials depend not only on the strength of the effective interactions among the valence electrons but also on their type. Strong correlations are caused by either Mott physics that captures the Coulomb repulsion among charges, or Hund physics that aligns the spins in different orbitals. We identify four energy scales marking the onset and the completion of screening in orbital and spin channels. The differences in these scales, which are manifest in the temperature dependence of the local spectrum and of the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities, prov…
Orbital differentiation is a common theme in multiorbital systems, yet a complete understanding of it is still missing. Here, we consider a minimal model for orbital differentiation in Hund metals with a highly accurate method: We use the numerical renormalization group as a real-frequency impurity solver for a dynamical mean-field study of three-orbital Hubbard models, where a crystal field shifts one orbital in energy. The individual phases are characterized with dynamic correlation functions and their relation to diverse Kondo temperatures. Upon approaching the orbital-selective Mott transi…
A systematic comparative study has been performed to better understand DFT$+U$ (density functional theory + $U$) method. We examine the effect of choosing different double counting and exchange-correlation functionals. The calculated energy distribution and the Hund-$J$ dependence of potential profile for representative configurations clearly show the different behaviors of each DFT$+U$ formalism. In particular, adopting spin-dependent exchange-correlation functionals likely leads to undesirable magnetic solution. Our analyses are further highlighted by real material examples ranging from insu…
We study LiFeP, LiFeAs and NaFeAs in their paramagnetic metallic phase including dynamical electronic correlations within a density functional theory + slave-spin mean-field framework. The three compounds are found to lie next to the crossover between a normal and a Hund's metal, where a region of enhanced electronic compressibility that may boost superconductivity is systematically present in this type of systems. We find that LiFeP lies in the normal metallic regime, LiFeAs at the crossover, and NaFeAs is in the Hund's metal regime, which possibly explains the different experimental trends f…
Despite of the importance of magnetism in possible relation to other key properties in iron-based superconductors, its understanding is still far from complete especially for FeSe systems. On one hand, the origin of the absence of magnetic orders in bulk FeSe is yet to be clarified. On the other hand, it is still not clear how close monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$, with the highest transition temperature among iron-based superconductors, is to a magnetic instability. Here we investigate magnetic properties of bulk and monolayer FeSe using dynamical mean-field theory combined with density-functiona…
We study the normal state electronic structure of the recently discovered infinite-layer nickelate superconductor, Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$. Using SrNiO$_2$ as a reference, we find that Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ is a multi-orbital electronic system with characteristic Hund's metal behaviors, such as metallicity, the importance of high-spin configurations, tendency towards orbital differentiation, and the absence of magnetism in regimes which are ordered according to static mean-field theories. In addition, our DFT+DMFT calculations with exact double counting scheme show that despite large charge …
We show that the numerical renormalization group (NRG) is a viable multi-band impurity solver for Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT), offering unprecedent real-frequency spectral resolution at arbitrarily low energies and temperatures. We use it to obtain a numerically exact DMFT solution to the Hund's metal problem for a three-orbital model with filling factor $n_d=2$. The ground state is a Fermi liquid. The one-particle spectral function has a strong particle-hole asymmetry, with a clear apparent power law for positive frequencies only. With increasing temperature it shows a coherence-incohe…
The Hall coefficient $R_H$ of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ exhibits a non-monotonic temperature dependence with two sign reversals. We show that this puzzling behavior is the signature of two crossovers which are key to the physics of this material. The increase of $R_H$ and the first sign change upon cooling are associated with a crossover into a regime of coherent quasiparticles with strong orbital differentiation of the inelastic scattering rates. The eventual decrease and the second sign change at lower temperature is driven by the crossover from inelastic to impurity-dominated scattering. This qualitati…
The electronic and magnetic properties of Ba$_5$AlIr$_2$O$_{11}$ containing Ir-Ir dimers are investigated using the GGA and GGA+SOC calculations. We found that strong suppression of the magnetic moment in this compound recently found in [J. Terzic {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 91}, 235147 (2015)] is not due to charge-ordering, but is related to the joint effect of the spin-orbit interaction and strong covalency, resulting in the formation of metal-metal bonds. They conspire and act against the intra-atomic Hund's rule exchange interaction to reduce total magnetic moment of the dimer. We argu…
