We study the finite distance boundary symmetry current algebra of the most general first order theory of 3d gravity. We show that the space of quadratic generators contains diffeomorphisms but also a notion of dual diffeomorphisms, which together form either a double Witt or centreless BMS$_3$ algebra. The relationship with the usual asymptotic symmetry algebra relies on a duality between the null and angular directions, which is possible thanks to the existence of the dual diffeomorphisms.
Since Stephen Hawking discovered that black holes emit thermal radiation, black holes have become the theoretical laboratories for testing our ideas on quantum gravity. This dissertation is devoted to the study of singularities, the formation of black holes by gravitational collapse and the global structure of spacetime. All our investigations are in the context of a recently proposed approach to quantum gravity, which breaks Lorentz and diffeomorphism symmetries at very high energies.
We study the implications of a change of coordinatization of momentum space for theories with curved momentum space. We of course find that after a passive diffeomorphism the theory yields the same physical predictions, as one would expect considering that a simple reparametrization should not change physics. However, it appears that general momentum-space covariance (invariance under active diffeomorphisms of momentum space) cannot be enforced, and within a given set of prescriptions on how the theory should encode momentum-space metric and affine connection the physical predictions do depend…
A novel algorithm is provided to couple a Galilean invariant model with curved spatial background by taking nonrelativistic limit of a unique minimally coupled relativistic theory, which ensures Galilean symmetry in the flat limit and canonical transformation of the original fields. That the twin requirements are fulfilled is ensured by a new field, the existence of which was demonstrated recently from Galilean gauge theory. The ambiguities and anomalies concerning the recovery of Galilean symmetry in the flat limit of spatial non relativistic diffeomorphic theories, reported in the literature…
We analyze asymptotic symmetries on the Killing horizon of the four-dimensional Kerr--Newman black hole. We first derive the asymptotic Killing vectors on the Killing horizon, which describe the asymptotic symmetries, and find that the general form of these asymptotic Killing vectors is the universal one possessed by arbitrary Killing horizons. We then construct the phase space associated with the asymptotic symmetries. It is shown that the phase space of an extreme black hole either has the size comparable with a non-extreme black hole, or is small enough to exclude degeneracy, depending on w…
The gauge symmetries of pure Chern-Simons theories with p-form gauge fields are analyzed. It is shown that the number of independent gauge symmetries depends crucially on the parity of p. The case where p is odd appears to be a direct generalization of the p=1 case and presents the remarkable feature that the timelike diffeomorphisms can be expressed in terms of the spatial diffeomorphisms and the internal gauge symmetries. By constrast, the timelike diffeomorphisms may be an independent gauge symmetry when p is even. This happens when the number of fields and the spacetime dimension fulfills …
The following questions are germane to our understanding of gauge-(in)variant quantities and physical possibility: how are gauge transformations and spacetime diffeomorphisms understood as symmetries, in which ways are they similar, and in which are they different? To what extent are we justified in endorsing different attitudes -- nowadays called sophistication, haecceitism, and eliminativism -- towards each? This is the first of four papers taking up this question. This first paper will discuss notions of symmetries and isomorphisms that will be used in the remaining papers in the series. Th…
Usual gauge fixing procedures in classical general relativity rely on the existence of solutions of a second order wave equation. We propose to use the equation to relate asymptotic symmetries at infinity to asymptotic symmetries of a black hole horizon, in tune with recent proposals. We illustrate the construction for the BTZ and four-dimensional Kerr black holes. We find in both cases a realization of the group of diffeomorphisms of the circle $S^1$.
Recently symmetries of gravity and gauge fields in the asymptotic regions of spacetime have been shown to play vital role in their low energy scattering phenomena. Further, for the black hole spacetime, near horizon symmetry has been observed to play possible role in understanding the underlying degrees of freedom for thermodynamic behaviour of horizon. Following the similar idea, in this paper, we analyzed the symmetry and associated algebra near a timelike surface which is situated at any arbitrary radial position and is embedded in black hole spacetime. In this paper we considered both Schw…
Previously, we have developed a general method to construct invariant conserved currents and charges in gravitational theories with Lagrangians that are invariant under spacetime diffeomorphisms and local Lorentz transformations. This approach is now generalized to the case when the local Lorentz group is replaced by an arbitrary local gauge group. The particular examples include the Maxwell and Yang-Mills fields coupled to gravity with Abelian and non-Abelian local internal symmetries, and the metric-affine gravity in which the local Lorentz spacetime group is extended to the local general li…
General covariance is the cornerstone of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) and implies that any two metrics related by diffeomorphisms are physically equivalent. There are, however, many examples pointing to the fact that this strict statement of general covariance needs refinement. There are a very special (measure-zero) subset of diffeomorphisms, the residual diffeomrphisms, to which one can associate well-defined conserved charges. This would hence render these diffeomorphic geometries physically distinct. We discuss that these symmetries may be appropriately called "symplectic symmetries"…
For a field theory that is invariant under diffeomorphisms there is a subtle interplay between symmetries, conservation laws and the phase space of the theory. The natural language for describing these ideas is that of differential forms and both differential forms on space-time and differential forms on the infinite dimensional space of solutions of the equations of motion of the field theory play an important role. There are exterior derivatives on both spaces and together they weave a double differential complex which captures the cohomology of the theory. This is important in the definitio…
We perform an off-shell treatment of asymptotically decelerating spatially flat FRW spacetimes at future null infinity. We obtain supertranslation and superrotation-like asymptotic diffeomorphisms which are consistent with the global symmetries of FRW and we compute how the asymptotic data is transformed under them. Further, we study in detail the effect of these diffeomorphisms on some simple backgrounds including unperturbed FRW and Sultana-Dyer black hole. In particular, we investigate how these transformations act on several cosmologically perturbed backgrounds.
We analyze the symmetries that are realized on the massive Kaluza-Klein modes in generic D-dimensional backgrounds with three non-compact directions. For this we construct the unbroken phase given by the decompactification limit, in which the higher Kaluza-Klein modes are massless. The latter admits an infinite-dimensional extension of the three-dimensional diffeomorphism group as local symmetry and, moreover, a current algebra associated to SL(D-2,R) together with the diffeomorphism algebra of the internal manifold as global symmetries. It is shown that the `broken phase' can be reconstructed…
A systematic analysis of the symmetries of topological 3D gravity with torsion and a cosmological term, in the first order formalism, has been performed in details - both in the hamiltonian and lagrangian formalisms. This illuminates the connection between the symmetries of curved spacetime (diffeomorphisms plus local Lorentz transformations) with the Poincare gauge transformations. The Poincare gauge symmetries of the action are shown to be inequivalent to its gauge symmetries. Finally, the complete analysis is compared with the metric formulation where the diffeomorphism symmetry is shown to…
The dilaton gravity models in two dimensions, including the Jackiw--Teitelboim model and its deformations, are particular cases of Poisson sigma models. Target space diffeomorphisms map one Poisson sigma model to another. We propose to use these diffsomorphisms to identify asymptotic conditions, boundary actions, and asymptotic symmetries in distinct dilaton gravity models. As an example, we use the asymptotic conditions in Jackiw--Teitelboim gravity to construct an asymptotic problem with Virasoro symmetry in a class of asymptotically Rindler models. We show, that the method can be applied to…
We discuss an approach to characterizing local degrees of freedom of a subregion in diffeomorphism-invariant theories using the extended phase space of Donnelly and Freidel, [JHEP 2016 (2016) 102]. Such a characterization is important for defining local observables and entanglement entropy in gravitational theories. Traditional phase space constructions for subregions are not invariant with respect to diffeomorphisms that act at the boundary. The extended phase space remedies this problem by introducing edge mode fields at the boundary whose transformations under diffeomorphisms render the ext…
The background field method is used to linearize the Weyl invariant scalar-tensor gravity, coupled with a Stueckelberg field. For a generic background metric, this action is found to be not invariant, under both diffeomorphism and generalized Weyl symmetry, the latter being a combination of gauge and Weyl transformations. Interestingly, the quadratic Lagrangian, emerging from a background of Minkowski metric, respects both the transformations, independently. Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry of scalar-tensor gravity coupled with a Stueckelberg-like massive gauge particle, possessing di…
We show that the phase space of three-dimensional gravity contains two layers of dualities: between diffeomorphisms and a notion of "dual diffeomorphisms" on the one hand, and between first order curvature and torsion on the other hand. This is most elegantly revealed and understood when studying the most general Lorentz-invariant first order theory in connection and triad variables, described by the so-called Mielke-Baekler Lagrangian. By analyzing the quasi-local symmetries of this theory in the covariant phase space formalism, we show that in each sector of the torsion/curvature duality the…
We study the underlying gauge symmetry algebra of the $N=2$ string, which is broken down to a subalgebra in any spacetime background. For given toroidal backgrounds, the unbroken gauge symmetries (corresponding to holomorphic and antiholomorphic worldsheet currents) generate area-preserving diffeomorphism algebras of null 2-tori. A minimal Lie algebraic closure containing all the gauge symmetries that arise in this way, is the background--independent volume--preserving diffeomorphism algebra of the target Narain torus $T^{4,4}$. The underlying symmetries act on the ground ring of functions on …
I examine the relationship between $(d+1)$-dimensional Poincaré metrics and $d$-dimensional conformal manifolds, from both mathematical and physical perspectives. The results have a bearing on several conceptual issues relating to asymptotic symmetries, in general relativity and in gauge-gravity duality, as follows: (1: Ambient Construction) I draw from the remarkable work by Fefferman and Graham (1985, 2012) on conformal geometry, in order to prove two propositions and a theorem that characterise the classes of diffeomorphisms that qualify as gravity-invisible. I define natural notions of gra…
The interplay between the diffeomorphism and conformal symmetries (a feature common in quantum field theories) is shown to be exhibited for the case of black holes in two dimensional classical Liouville theory. We show that although the theory is conformally invariant in the near horizon limit, there is a breaking of the diffeomorphism symmetry at the classical level. On the other hand, in the region away from the horizon, the conformal symmetry of the theory gets broken with the diffeomorphism symmetry remaining intact.
This paper analyzes spacetime symmetries of topological string theory on a two dimensional torus, and points out that the spacetime geometry of the model is that of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. Previously I found an infinite symmetry algebra in the absolute BRST cohomology of the model. Here I find an analog of the BV $Δ$ operator, and show that it defines a natural semirelative BRST cohomology. In the absolute cohomology, the ghost-number-zero symmetries form the algebra of all infinitesimal spacetime diffeomorphisms, extended at non-zero ghost numbers to the algebra of all odd-symplecti…
A group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms in 3D turns out to play a key role in an Einstein-Maxwell theory whose Weyl tensor is selfdual and whose Maxwell tensor has algebraically general anti-selfdual part. This model was first introduced by Flaherty and recently studied by Park as an integrable deformation of selfdual gravity. A twisted volume form on the corresponding twistor space is shown to be the origin of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. An immediate consequence is the existence of an infinite number of symmetries as a generalization of $w_{1+\infty}$ symmetries in selfdual gravit…
The special Galileon stands out amongst scalar field theories due to its soft limits, non-linear symmetries and scattering amplitudes. This prompts the question what the origin of its underlying symmetry is. We show that it is intimately connected to general relativity: the special Galileon is the Goldstone mode of the affine group, consisting of linear coordinate transformations, analogous to the dilaton for conformal symmetries. We construct the corresponding metric, and discuss various relations to gravity, Yang-Mills and the non-linear sigma-model.
Einstein-Maxwell theory is not only covariant under diffeomorphisms but also is under $U(1)$ gauge transformations. We introduce a combined transformation constructed out of diffeomorphism and $U(1)$ gauge transformation. We show that symplectic potential, which is defined in covariant phase space method, is not invariant under combined transformations. In order to deal with that problem, following Donnelly and Freidel proposal \cite{1}, we introduce new fields. In this way, phase space and consequently symplectic potential will be extended. We show that new fields produce edge modes. We consi…
A general diffeomorphism invariant SU(2) gauge theory is a gravity theory with two propagating polarizations of the graviton. We develop this description of gravity, in particular for future applications to the perturbative quantization. Thus, the linearized theory, gauge symmetries, gauge fixing are discussed in detail, and the propagator is obtained. The propagator takes a simple form of that of Yang-Mills theory with an additional projector on diffeomorphism equivalence classes of connections inserted. In our approach the gravitational perturbation theory takes a rather unusual form in that…
Diffeomorphisms and an internal symmetry (e.g., local Lorentz invariance) are typically regarded as the symmetries of any geometrical gravity theory, including general relativity. In the first-order formalism, diffeomorphisms can be thought of as a derived symmetry from the so-called local translations, which have improved properties. In this work, the algebra of an arbitrary internal symmetry and the local translations is obtained for a generic gauge theory of gravity, in any spacetime dimensions, and coupled to matter fields. It is shown that this algebra closes off shell suggesting that the…
Area preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-d compact Riemannian manifold with or without boundary are studied. We find two classes of decompositions of a Riemannian metric, namely, h- and g-decomposition, that help to formulate a gravitational theory which is area preserving diffeomorphism (SDiff$M$-) invariant but not necessarily diffeomorphism invariant. The general covariance of equations of motion of such a theory can be achieved by incorporating proper Weyl rescaling. The h-decomposition makes the conformal factor of a metric SDiff$M$-invariant and the rest of the metric invariant under confo…
We discuss the fate of diffeomorphism symmetry in discrete gravity. Diffeomorphism symmetry is typically broken by the discretization. This has repercussions for the observable content and the canonical formulation of the theory. It might however be possible to construct discrete actions, so--called perfect actions, with exact symmetries and we will review first steps towards this end.
Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we discuss the full set of proper BRST and anti-BRST transformations for a 2D diffeomorphism invariant theory which is described by the Lagrangian density of a standard bosonic string. The above (anti-)BRST transformations are off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting. The latter property is valid on a submanifold of the space of the quantum fields where the 2D version of the universal (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions are satisfied. We derive the precise forms of the BRST and anti-BRST invar…
There has been renewed interest in the path-integral computation of the partition function of AdS3 gravity, both in the metric and Chern-Simons formulations. The one-loop partition function around Euclidean AdS3 turns out to be given by the vacuum character of Virasoro group. This stems from the work of Brown and Henneaux (BH) who showed that, in AdS3 gravity with sensible asymptotic boundary conditions, an infinite group of (improper) diffeomorphisms arises which acts canonically on phase space as two independent Virasoro symmetries. The gauge group turns out to be composed of so-called ``pro…
We carry out a parallel study of the covariant phase space and the conservation laws of local symmetries in two-dimensional dilaton gravity. Our analysis is based on the fact that the Lagrangian can be brought to a form that vanishes on-shell giving rise to a well-defined covariant potential for the symplectic current. We explicitly compute the symplectic structure and its potential and show that the requirement to be finite and independent of the Cauchy surface restricts the asymptotic symmetries.
Self-dual gravity may be reformulated as the two dimensional principal chiral model with the group of area preserving diffeomorphisms as its gauge group. Using this formulation, it is shown that self-dual gravity contains an infinite dimensional hidden symmetry whose generators form the Affine (Kac-Moody) algebra associated with the Lie algebra of area preserving diffeomorphisms. This result provides an observable algebra and a solution generating technique for self-dual gravity.
We describe the multisymplectic analysis of the constraints of first-order embedded submanifolds inherited from diffeomorphisms of the ambient manifold. The ambient diffeomorphism deformations of first-order embedded submanifolds are examined. We find that the covariant Noether currents, corresponding to the inherited ambient diffeomorphism symmetry, satisfy a non-Abelian deformation algebra, the structure functions being the Cartan structure functions on the ambient manifold. We define the covariant kinematical phase space of pseudoholomorphic embeddings (the symplectic 2-submanifolds of a sy…
The use of a diffeomorphism covariant star product enables us to construct diffeomorphism invariant gravities on noncommutative symplectic manifolds without twisting the symmetries. As an example, we construct noncommutative deformations of all two-dimensional dilaton gravity models thus overcoming some difficulties of earlier approaches. One of such models appears to be integrable. We find all classical solutions of this model and discuss their properties.
Higher-spin diffeomorphisms are to higher-order differential operators what diffeomorphisms are to vector fields. Their rigorous definition is a challenging mathematical problem which might predate a better understanding of higher-spin symmetries and interactions. Several yes-go and no-go results on higher-spin diffeomorphisms are collected from the mathematical literature in order to propose a generalisation of the algebra of differential operators on which higher-spin diffeomorphisms are well-defined.
Motivated by the equivalence between soft graviton theorem and Ward identities for the supertranslation symmetries belonging to the BMS group, we propose a new extension (different from the so-called extended BMS) of the BMS group which is a semi-direct product of supertranslations and Diff(S^2). We propose a definition for the canonical generators associated to the smooth diffeomorphisms and show that the resulting Ward identities are equivalent to the subleading soft graviton theorem of Cachazo and Strominger.
The asymptotic symmetry group (ASG) at future null infinity (I^+) of four-dimensional de Sitter spacetimes is defined and shown to be given by the group of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms acting on I^+. Finite charges are constructed for each choice of ASG generator together with a two-surface on I^+. A conservation equation is derived relating the evolution of the charges with the radiation flux through I^+.
This is the second of four papers taking up this question, and it is the one that most engages with the metaphysical debates surrounding our understanding of symmetry and equivalence. In…
The symmetry algebra of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity in three dimensions is the semi-direct sum of the infinitesimal diffeomorphisms on the circle with an abelian ideal of supertranslations. The associated charge algebra is shown to admit a non trivial classical central extension of Virasoro type closely related to that of the anti-de Sitter case.
We investigate asymptotic symmetries which preserve the Bondi gauge conditions but do not preserve the asymptotic falloff conditions for the metric near the null boundary, and their connection to soft graviton theorems for scattering amplitudes. These include generalized superrotation symmetries parameterized by a smooth vector field $Y^{A}$ obeying $D_{A}Y^{A} = 0$, for which we show that the associated conserved charge can be derived by applying the Noether procedure to the Einstein-Katz action. We also discuss the connection between asymptotic symmetries and the conserved charge associated …
We explain how twistor theory represents the self-dual sector of four dimensional gravity in terms of the loop group of Poisson diffeomorphisms of the plane via Penrose's non-linear graviton construction. The symmetries of the self-dual sector are generated by the corresponding loop algebra $Lw_{1+\infty}$ of the algebra $w_{1+\infty}$ of these Poisson diffeomorphisms. We show that these coincide with the infinite tower of soft graviton symmetries in tree-level perturbative gravity recently discovered in the context of celestial amplitudes. We use a twistor sigma model for the self-dual sector…
Three-dimensional colored gravity refers to nonabelian isospin extension of Einstein gravity. We investigate the asymptotic symmetry algebra of the $SU(N)$-colored gravity in (2+1)-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. Formulated by the Chern-Simons theory with $SU(N,N)\times SU(N,N)$ gauge group, the theory contains graviton, $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons gauge fields and massless spin-two multiplets in the $SU(N)$ adjoint representation, thus extending diffeomorphism to colored, nonabelian counterpart. We identify the asymptotic symmetry as Poisson algebra of generators associated with the residual g…
The Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group is the asymptotic symmetry group of asymptotically flat gravity. Recently, Donnay et al. have derived an analogous symmetry group acting on black hole event horizons. For a certain choice of boundary conditions, it is a semidirect product of ${\rm Diff}(S^2)$, the smooth diffeomorphisms of the two-sphere, acting on $C^\infty(S^2)$, the smooth functions on the two-sphere. We observe that the same group appears in fluid dynamics as symmetries of the compressible Euler equations. We relate these two realizations of ${\rm Diff}(S^2)\ltimes C^\infty(…
We apply the supervariable approach to derive the proper quantum Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries for the 1D diffeomorphism invariant model of a free scalar relativistic particle by exploiting the infinitesimal classical reparameterization (i.e. 1D diffeomorphism) symmetry of this theory. We derive the conserved and off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges and prove their absolute anticommutativity property by using the virtues of Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction of our present theory. We establish the sanctity of the existence of CF-type restriction (i) by consideri…
Brans-Dicke theory contains an additional propagating mode which causes homogeneous expansion and contraction of test bodies in transverse directions. This "breathing" mode is associated with novel memory effects in addition to those of general relativity. Standard tensor mode memories are related to a symmetry principle: they are determined by the balance equations corresponding to the BMS symmetries. In this paper, we show that the leading and subleading breathing memory effects are determined by the balance equations associated with the leading and "overleading" asymptotic symmetries of a d…
We propose a set of diffeomorphism that act non-trivially near the horizon of the Kerr black hole. We follow the recent developments of Haco-Hawking-Perry-Strominger to quantify this phase space, with the most substantial difference being our choice of vectors fields. Our gravitational charges are organized into a Virasoro-Kac-Moody algebra with non-trivial central extensions. We interpret this algebra as arising from a warped conformal field theory. Using the data we can infer from this warped CFT description, we capture the thermodynamic properties of the Kerr black hole.
We study effective field theories (EFTs) enjoying (maximal) biform symmetries. These are defined by the presence of a conserved (electric) current that has the symmetries of a Young tableau with two columns of equal length. When these theories also have a topological (magnetic) biform current, its conservation law is anomalous. We go on to show that this mixed anomaly uniquely fixes the two-point function between the electric and magnetic currents. We then perform a Källén-Lehmann spectral decomposition of the current-current correlator, proving that there is a massless mode in the spectrum, w…
We study realization of the target space diffeomorphisms in the type $C$ topological string. We found that the charges, which generate transformations of the boundary observables, form an algebra, which differs from that of bulk charges by the contribution of the bubbled disks. We discuss applications to noncommutative field theories.
The possibility of the extension of spatial diffeomorphisms to a larger family of symmetries in a class of classical field theories is studied. The generator of the additional local symmetry contains a quadratic kinetic term and a potential term which can be a general (not necessarily local) functional of the metric. From the perspective of the foundation of Einstein's gravity our results are positive: The extended constraint algebra is either that of Einstein's gravity, or ultralocal gravity. If our goal is a simple modification of Einstein's gravity that for example makes it perturbatively r…
We derive the dual CFT Virasoro algebras from the algebra of conserved diffeomorphism charges, for a large class of abelian Kaluza-Klein black holes. Under certain conditions, such as non-vanishing electric and magnetic monopole charges, the Kaluza-Klein black holes have a Reissner-Nordstrom space-time structure. For the non-extremal charged Kaluza-Klein black holes, we use the uplifted 6d pure gravity solutions to construct a set of Killing horizon preserving diffeomorphisms. For the (non-supersymmetric) extremal black holes, we take the NENH limit, and construct a one-parameter family of dif…
We study the low energy effective theory describing gravity with broken spatial diffeomorphism invariance. In the unitary gauge, the Goldstone bosons associated with broken diffeomorphisms are eaten and the graviton becomes a massive spin-2 particle with 5 well-behaved degrees of freedom. In this gauge, the most general theory is built with the lowest dimension operators invariant under only temporal diffeomorphisms. Imposing the additional shift and SO(3) internal symmetries, we analyze the perturbations on a FRW background. At linear perturbation level, the observables of this theory are cha…
In this paper we show how the well-know local symmetries of Lagrangeans systems, and in particular the diffeomorphism invariance, emerge in the Hamiltonian formulation. We show that only the constraints which are linear in the momenta generate transformations which correspond to symmetries of the corresponding Lagrangean system. The nonlinear constraints (which we have, for instance, in gravity, supergravity and string theory) rather generate the dynamics of the corresponding Lagrangean system. Only in a very special combination with "trivial" transformations proportional to the equations of m…
First-order general relativity in $n$ dimensions ($n \geq 3$) has an internal gauge symmetry that is the higher-dimensional generalization of three-dimensional local translations. We report the extension of this symmetry for $n$-dimensional f(R) gravity with torsion in the Cartan formalism. The new symmetry arises from the direct application of the converse of Noether's second theorem to the action principle of f(R) gravity with torsion. We show that infinitesimal diffeomorphisms can be written as a linear combination of the new internal gauge symmetry, local Lorentz transformations, and terms…
