The Special Galileon as Goldstone of Diffeomorphisms

The special Galileon stands out amongst scalar field theories due to its soft limits, non-linear symmetries and scattering amplitudes. This prompts the question what the origin of its underlying symmetry is. We show that it is intimately connected to general relativity: the special Galileon is the Goldstone mode of the affine group, consisting of linear coordinate transformations, analogous to the dilaton for conformal symmetries. We construct the corresponding metric, and discuss various relations to gravity, Yang-Mills and the non-linear sigma-model.

Goldstone's Theorem and Hamiltonian of Multi-galileon Modified Gravity

The galileon model was recently proposed to locally describe a class of modified gravity theories, including the braneworld DGP model. We discuss spontaneous symmetry breaking of the self-accelerating branch in a multi-galileon theory with internal global symmetries. We show a modified version of Goldstone's theorem is applicable to the symmetry breaking pattern and discuss its implications. We also derive the Hamiltonian of a general multi-galileon theory and discuss its implications.

Gravitons as Goldstone Modes and the Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking of Diffeomorphism Invariance

We complement investigations of the gauge structure of general relativity with an analysis of the physical consequences of the spontaneous breaking of diffeomorphism invariance which manifests itself in e.g. the socalled Einstein hole problem. We analyze the nature of the gravitons as Goldstone excitations both in the classical and the quantum case. Flavour-kinematics duality for Goldstone modes

Three scalar effective field theories have special properties in terms of non-linear symmetries, soft limits and on-shell constructability that arise from their Goldstone nature: the non-linear $σ$-model, multi-DBI theory and the special Galileon. Universal expansions of scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and Goldstone particles

Tree-level scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and Goldstone particles in any dimensions are strongly constrained by basic principles, and they are intimately related to each other via various relations. Can Chern-Simons or Rarita-Schwinger be a Volkov-Akulov Goldstone?

We study three-dimensional non-linear models of vector and vector-spinor Goldstone fields associated with the spontaneous breaking of certain higher-spin counterparts of supersymmetry whose Lagrangians are of a Volkov-Akulov type. Goldstone fields in these models transform non-linearly under the spontaneously broken rigid symmetries. A Higgs Mechanism for Vector Galileons

Vector theories with non-linear derivative self-interactions that break gauge symmetries have been shown to have interesting cosmological applications. In this paper we introduce a way to spontaneously break the gauge symmetry and construct these theories via a Higgs mechanism. In addition to the purely gauge field interactions, our method generates new ghost-free scalar-vector interactions between the Higgs field and the gauge boson. Goldstones with Extended Shift Symmetries

We consider scalar field theories invariant under extended shift symmetries consisting of higher order polynomials in the spacetime coordinates. These generalize ordinary shift symmetries and the linear shift symmetries of the galileons. We find Wess-Zumino Lagrangians which transform up to total derivatives under these symmetries, and which possess fewer derivatives per field and lower order equations of motion than the strictly invariant terms. Exceptional scalar theories in de Sitter space

The special galileon and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories are effective field theories of a single scalar field that have many interesting properties in flat space. These theories can be extended to all maximally symmetric spaces, where their algebras of shift symmetries are simple. Effective Field Theory of Broken Spatial Diffeomorphisms

We study the low energy effective theory describing gravity with broken spatial diffeomorphism invariance. In the unitary gauge, the Goldstone bosons associated with broken diffeomorphisms are eaten and the graviton becomes a massive spin-2 particle with 5 well-behaved degrees of freedom. In this gauge, the most general theory is built with the lowest dimension operators invariant under only temporal diffeomorphisms. Universal Dynamics of Spontaneous Lorentz Violation and a New Spin-Dependent Inverse-Square Law Force

We study the universal low-energy dynamics associated with the spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance down to spatial rotations. The effective Lagrangian for the associated Goldstone field can be uniquely determined by the non-linear realization of a broken time diffeomorphism symmetry, up to some overall mass scales.
