It has recently been demonstrated that protected supersymmetry emerges on the boundaries of one-dimensional intrinsically fermionic symmetry protected trivial (SPT) phases. Here we investigate the boundary supersymmetry of one-dimensional fermionic phases beyond SPT phases. Using the connection between Majorana edge modes and real supercharges, we compute, in terms of the bulk phase invariants, the number of protected boundary supercharges.
We study the generalized supersymmetric $t-J$ model with boundaries in three different gradings: FFB, BFF and FBF. Starting from the trigonometric R-matrix, and in the framework of the graded quantum inverse scattering method (QISM), we solve the eigenvalue problems for the supersymmetric $t-J$ model. A detailed calculations are presented to obtain the eigenvalues and Bethe ansatz equations of the supersymmetric $t-J$ model with boundaries in three different backgrounds.
Gapped interfaces (and boundaries) of two-dimensional (2D) Abelian topological phases are shown to support a remarkably rich sequence of 1D symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states. We show that such interfaces can provide a physical interpretation for the corrections to the topological entanglement entropy of a 2D state with Abelian topological order found in Ref.~\onlinecite{cano-2015}. The topological entanglement entropy decomposes as $γ= γ_a + γ_s$, where $γ_a > 0$ only depends on universal topological properties of the 2D state, while a correction $γ_s > 0$ signals the emergence of th…
We build exactly solvable lattice Hamiltonians for fermionic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in (3+1)D classified by group supercohomology. A central benefit of our construction is that it produces an explicit finite-depth quantum circuit (FDQC) that prepares the ground state from an unentangled symmetric state. The FDQC allows us to clearly demonstrate the characteristic properties of supercohomology phases - namely, symmetry fractionalization on fermion parity flux loops - predicted by continuum formulations. By composing the corresponding FDQCs, we also recover the stacking rela…
By combining the algebraic Bethe ansatz and the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz, we investigate the supersymmetric t-J model with generic open boundaries. The eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are given in terms of an inhomogeneous T-Q relation, and the corresponding eigenstates are expressed in terms of nested Bethe states which have well-defined homogeneous limit. This exact solution provides basis for further analyzing the thermodynamic properties and correlation functions of the model.
Matrix Product States (MPSs) provide a powerful framework to study and classify gapped quantum phases --symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in particular--defined in one dimensional lattices. On the other hand, it is natural to expect that gapped quantum phases in the limit of zero correlation length are described by topological quantum field theories (TFTs or TQFTs). In this paper, for (1+1)-dimensional bosonic SPT phases protected by symmetry $G$, we bridge their descriptions in terms of MPSs, and those in terms of $G$-equivariant TFTs. In particular, for various topological invarian…

Edge theories of symmetry-protected topological phases are well-known to possess global symmetry anomalies. In this work we focus on two-dimensional bosonic phases protected by an on-site symmetry and analyse the corresponding edge anomalies in more detail. Physical interpretations of the anomaly in terms of an obstruction to orbifolding and constructing symmetry-preserving boundaries are connected to the cohomology classification of symmetry-protected phases in two dimensions. Using the tensor network and matrix product state formalism we numerically illustrate our arguments and discuss compu…
We study the structure of entanglement in a supersymmetric lattice model of fermions on certain types of decorated graphs with quenched disorder. In particular, we construct models with controllable ground state degeneracy protected by supersymmetry and the choice of Hilbert space. We show that in certain special limits these degenerate ground states are associated with local impurities and that there exists a basis of the ground state manifold in which every basis element satisfies a boundary law for entanglement entropy. On the other hand, by considering incoherent mixtures or coherent super…
This Letter discusses topological quantum computation with gapped boundaries of two-dimensional topological phases. Systematic methods are presented to encode quantum information topologically using gapped boundaries, and to perform topologically protected operations on this encoding. In particular, we introduce a new and general computational primitive of topological charge measurement and present a symmetry-protected implementation of this primitive. Throughout the Letter, a concrete physical example, the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ toric code ($\mathfrak{D}(\mathbb{Z}_3)$), is discussed. For this exampl…
The fermionic Shastry-Sutherland model has a rich phase diagram, including phases with massless Dirac fermions, a quadratic band crossing point, and a pseudospin-1 Weyl fermion. Berry phases defined by the one-dimensional momentum as a parameter are quantized into 0 or pi due to the inversion symmetry combined with the time reversal, or existence of the glide plane, which also protects the massless Dirac cones with continuous parameters. This is the symmetry protected Z2 quantization. We have further demonstrated the Z2 Berry phases generically determine the existence of edge states in various…
Non-Hermitian topological phenomena occur in mechanical systems described by the Newton equation. A mechanical graphene, which is composed of mass points and springs, shows symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs) in the presence of the friction. However, it remains unclear what physical properties or phenomena the SPERs induce. Our numerical analysis reveals that the SPERs can govern dynamics in the wavenumber space. Moreover, we propose how to extract the dynamics in the wavenumber space for systems with the boundaries. Furthermore, we also observe that connectivity of the SPERs changes …
Anderson's localization on the edge of two dimensional time reversal (TR) topological insulator (TI) is studied. For the non-interacting case the topological protection acts accordingly to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classification, leading to conducting and insulating phases for odd and even fillings respectively. In the presence of repulsive interaction the phase diagram is notably changed. We show that for sufficiently strong values of the interaction the zero temperature fixed point of the TI is conducting, including the case of even fillings. We compute the boundaries of the conducting phase for v…
We study $(d-1)$-dimensional excitations in the $d$-dimensional color code that are created by transversal application of the $R_{d}$ phase operators on connected subregions of qubits. We find that such excitations are superpositions of electric charges and can be characterized by fixed-point wavefunctions of $(d-1)$-dimensional bosonic SPT phases with $(\mathbb{Z}_{2})^{\otimes d}$ symmetry. While these SPT excitations are localized on $(d-1)$-dimensional boundaries, their creation requires operations acting on all qubits inside the boundaries, reflecting the non-triviality of emerging SPT wa…
A higher-order (HO) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state can be realized in a plaquette-modulated square lattice antiferromagnet, which hosts a spin-$1/2$ degenerate mode on each corner of the lattice with open boundaries. In this work, we show with the field-theoretic analysis and quantum Monte Carlo simulations that the plaquette modulation can drive a direct topological quantum phase transition from the HOSPT to a trivial disordered phase across the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) between the antiferromagnetic (AF) order and the valence bond solid (VBS) order, thus the DQCP i…
We use localization to compute the partition function of a four dimensional, supersymmetric, abelian gauge theory on a hemisphere coupled to charged matter on the boundary. Our theory has eight real supercharges in the bulk of which four are broken by the presence of the boundary. The main result is that the partition function is identical to that of ${\mathcal N}=2$ abelian Chern-Simons theory on a three-sphere coupled to chiral multiplets, but where the quantized Chern-Simons level is replaced by an arbitrary complexified gauge coupling $τ$. The localization reduces the path integral to a si…
We study the generalized supersymmetric t-J model with Kondo impurities in the boundaries. We first construct the higher spin operator K-matrix for the XXZ Heisenberg chain. Setting the boundary parameter to be a special value, we find a higher spin reflecting K-matrix for the supersymmetric t-J model. By using the Quantum Inverse Scattering Method, we obtain the eigenvalue and the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations.
Crystalline topological insulators owe their topological character to the protection that certain boundary states acquire because of certain point-group symmetries. We first show that a Hermitian operator obeying supersymmetric quantum mechanisms (SUSY QM) delivers the entanglement spectrum. We then show that such an entanglement spectrum that is compatible with a certain point-group symmetry obeys a certain local spectral symmetry. The latter result is applied to the stability analysis of four fermionic non-interacting Hamiltonians, the last of which describes graphene with a Kekule distortio…
We present a detailed analysis of topological properties of the valence bond solid (VBS) states doped with fermionic holes. As concrete examples, we consider the supersymmetric extension of the SU(2)- and the SO(5) VBS states, dubbed UOSp(1|2) and UOSp(1|4) supersymmetric VBS states, respectively. Specifically, we investigate the string-order parameters and the entanglement spectra of these states to find that, even when the parent states (bosonic VBS states) do not support the string order, they recover it when holes are doped and the fermionic sector appears in the entanglement spectrum. The…
We prove that the boundaries of all non-trivial 1+1 dimensional intrinsically fermionic symmetry-protected-topological phases, protected by finite on-site symmetries (unitary or anti-unitary), are supersymmetric quantum mechanical systems. This supersymmetry does not require any fine-tuning of the underlying Hamiltonian, arises entirely as a consequence of the boundary 't Hooft anomaly that classifies the phase and is related to a `Bose-Fermi' degeneracy different in nature from other well known degeneracies such as Kramers doublets.
Spin-1/2 two-legged ladders respecting inter-leg exchange symmetry and D2 spin rotation symmetry have new symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases which are different from the Haldane phase. Three of the new SPT phases are tx,ty,tz, which all have symmetry protected two-fold degenerate edge states on each end of the open boundaries. However, the edge states in different phases have different response to magnetic field. For example, the edge states in the tz phase will be split by the magnetic field along the z-direction, but not by the fields in the x- and y-directions. We give the Hamilton…
This paper studies fault-tolerant quantum computation with gapped boundaries. We first introduce gapped boundaries of Kitaev's quantum double models for Dijkgraaf-Witten theories using their Hamiltonian realizations. We classify the elementary excitations on the boundary, and systematically describe the bulk-to-boundary condensation procedure. We also provide a commuting Hamiltonian to realize defects between boundaries in any quantum double model. Next, we present the algebraic/categorical structure of gapped boundaries and boundary defects, which will be used to describe topologically protec…
Recently there is a surge of interests in the so-called topologically protected corner states in 2D and 3D systems. Such systems are considered as high order topological insulators. Wannier centers are used as topological invariants to characterize bulk systems. The existence of corner states is considered as a reflection of the topological non-triviality of bulk energy bands. We demonstrate that the Wannier centers are not topological invariants by showing they depend on the choices of unit cells. The same bulk system can be considered as both topological and trivial with two equally possible…
We use an entanglement measure that respects the superselection of particle number to study the non-local properties of symmetry-protected topological edge states. Considering half-filled M-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladders as an example, we show that the topological properties and the operational entanglement extractable from the boundaries are intimately connected. Topological phases with at least two filled edge states have the potential to realize genuine, non-bipartite, many-body entanglement which can be transferred to a quantum register. The entanglement is extractable when the fil…
We study $3d$ (or $(3+1)d$) Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) realized on the boundary of $4d$ (or $(4+1)d$) bosonic symmetry protected topological (BSPT) states, using a systematic nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) field theory description of BSPT states. We demonstrate that many of these QED states have an exact electric-magnetic duality due to the symmetry of the BSPT states in the $4d$ bulk. The gauge charge and Dirac monopole both carry projective representations of the bulk symmetry, and the emergent gapless photons of the QED phase also transform nontrivially under the bulk symmetry. Some of the…
We propose an exotic scenario that topological superconductivity can emerge by doping strongly interacting fermionic systems whose spin degrees of freedom form bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) state. Specifically, we study a 1-dimensional (1D) example where the spin degrees of freedom form a spin-1 Haldane phase. {Before doping, the charge and spin degrees of freedom are both gapped.} Upon doping, {the charge channel becomes gapless and is described by a $c=1$ compactified bosonic conformal field theory (CFT), while the spin channel remains gapped and still form a bosonic SPT state…
Almost strong edge-mode operators arising at the boundaries of certain interacting 1D symmetry protected topological phases with \(Z_2\) symmetry have infinite temperature lifetimes that are non-perturbatively long in the integrability breaking terms, making them promising as bits for quantum information processing. We extract the lifetime of these edge-mode operators for small system sizes as well as in the thermodynamic limit. For the latter, a Lanczos scheme is employed to map the operator dynamics to a one dimensional tight-binding model of a single particle in Krylov space. We find this m…

Conventional topological insulators and superconductors have topologically protected nodal points on their boundaries, and the recent interests in nodal-line semimetals only concerned bulk band structures. Here, we present a novel four-dimensional topological insulator protected by an anti-unitary reflection symmetry, whose boundary band has a single $PT$-symmetric nodal line with double topological charges. Inspired by the recent experimental realization of the four-dimensional quantum Hall effect, we also propose a cold-atom system which realizes the novel topological insulator with tunable …
Boundaries constitute a rich playground for quantum many-body systems because they can lead to novel degrees of freedom such as protected boundary states in topological phases. Here, we study the groundstate of integer quantum Hall systems in the presence of boundaries through the reduced density matrix of a spatial region. We work in the lowest Landau level and choose our region to intersect the boundary at arbitrary angles. The entanglement entropy (EE) contains a logarithmic contribution coming from the chiral edge modes, and matches the corresponding conformal field theory prediction. We u…
We classify the different ways in which matrix product states (MPSs) can stay invariant under the action of matrix product operator (MPO) symmetries. This is achieved through a local characterization of how the MPSs, that generate a ground space, remain invariant under a global MPO symmetry. This characterization yields a set of quantities satisfying the coupled pentagon equations, associated with a module category over the fusion category that describes the MPO symmetry. Equivalence classes of these quantities provide complete invariants for an MPO symmetry protected phase: they are robust un…
Topological phases are often characterized by special edge states confined near the boundaries by an energy gap in the bulk. On raising temperature, these edge states are lost in a clean system due to mobile thermal excitations. Recently however, it has been established that disorder can localize an isolated many body system, potentially allowing for a sharply defined topological phase even in a highly excited state. Here we show this to be the case for the topological phase of a one dimensional magnet with quenched disorder, which features spin one-half excitations at the edges. The time evol…
Higher Order Topological Insulators (HOTI) are $d$-spatial dimensional systems featuring topologically protected gap-less states at their $(d-n)$-dimensional boundaries. With the help of \textit{ab-initio} calculations and tight binding models along with symmetry considerations we show that monolayer buckled honeycomb structures of group-V elements (Sb,As), which have already been synthesized, belong in this category and have a charge fractionalization of $\frac{e}{2}$ at the corner states as well as weak topological edge states, all protected by their properties under the inversion operation …
Robust boundary states have been the focus of much recent research, both as topologically protected states and as non-Hermitian skin states. In this work, we show that many-body effects can also induce analogs of these robust states in place of actual physical boundaries. Particle statistics or suitably engineered interactions i.e. in ultracold atomic lattices can restrict the accessible many-body Hilbert space, and introduce effective boundaries in a spatially periodic higher-dimensional configuration space. We demonstrate the emergence of topological chiral modes in a two-fermion hopping mod…
A strongly correlated electron system associated with the quantum superalgebra ${U}_q[{osp}(2|2)]$ is studied in the framework of the quantum inverse scattering method. By solving the graded reflection equation, two classes of boundary-reflection $K$-matrices leading to four kinds of possible boundary interaction terms are found. Performing the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we diagonalize the two-level transfer matrices which characterize the charge and the spin degrees of freedom, respectively. The Bethe-ansatz equations, the eigenvalues of the transfer matrices and the energy spectrum are presente…
We study the quench dynamics of a topological $p$-wave superfluid with two competing order parameters, $Δ_\pm(t)$. When the system is prepared in the $p+ip$ ground state and the interaction strength is quenched, only $Δ_+(t)$ is nonzero. However, we show that fluctuations in the initial conditions result in the growth of $Δ_-(t)$ and chaotic oscillations of both order parameters. We term this behavior phase III'. In addition, there are two other types of late time dynamics -- phase I where both order parameters decay to zero and phase II where $Δ_+(t)$ asymptotes to a nonzero constant while $Δ…
This paper attempts to establish the connection among classifications of gapped boundaries in topological phases of matter, bosonic symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases and fault-tolerantly implementable logical gates in quantum error-correcting codes. We begin by presenting constructions of gapped boundaries for the $d$-dimensional quantum double model by using $d$-cocycles functions ($d\geq 2$). We point out that the system supports $m$-dimensional excitations ($m<d$), which we shall call fluctuating charges, that are superpositions of point-like electric charges characterized by $m$-…
We study possible topological features of Kondo spin liquid phase in terms of the one- and two-dimensional Kondo necklace models within the frame work of quantum O(N) non-liner sigma model (NLSM). In the one-dimensional case, it is found that the bulk properties of the Kodno spin liquid phase are similar to the well-known Haldane phase at strong coupling fixed point. The difference between them mainly comes from their boundaries due to the effect of the topological term. In the two-dimensional case, the system can be mapped onto an O(4)-like NLSM with some O(3) anisotropy. Interestingly, we fi…
We propose an order parameter for the Symmetry-Protected Topological (SPT) phases which are protected by Abelian on-site symmetries. This order parameter, called the "SPT-entanglement", is defined as the entanglement between A and B, two distant regions of the system, given that the total charge (associated with the symmetry) in a third region C is measured and known, where C is a connected region surrounded by A, B and the boundaries of the system. In the case of 1-dimensional systems we prove that in the limit where A and B are large and far from each other compared to the correlation length…
