Gapped interfaces (and boundaries) of two-dimensional (2D) Abelian topological phases are shown to support a remarkably rich sequence of 1D symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states. We show that such interfaces can provide a physical interpretation for the corrections to the topological entanglement entropy of a 2D state with Abelian topological order found in Ref.~\onlinecite{cano-2015}. The topological entanglement entropy decomposes as $γ= γ_a + γ_s$, where $γ_a > 0$ only depends on universal topological properties of the 2D state, while a correction $γ_s > 0$ signals the emergence of the 1D SPT state that is produced by interactions along the entanglement cut and provides a direct measure of the stabilizing symmetry of the resulting SPT state. A correspondence is established between the possible values of $γ_s$ associated with a given interface - which is named Boundary Topological Entanglement Sequence - and classes of 1D SPT states. We show that symmetry-preserving domain walls along such 1D interfaces (or boundaries) generally host localized parafermion-like excitations that are stable to local symmetry-preserving perturbations.
Symmetry protected topological phases (SPTs) have universal degeneracies in the entanglement spectrum in one dimension (1D). Here, we formulate this phenomenon in the framework of symmetry-resolved entanglement (SRE) using cohomology theory. We develop a general approach to compute entanglement measures of SPTs in any dimension and specifically SRE via a discrete path integral on multi-sheet Riemann surfaces with generalized defects. The resulting path integral is expressed in terms of group cocycles describing the topological actions of SPTs. Their cohomology classification allows to identify…
Symmetry-resolved entanglement is a useful tool for characterizing symmetry-protected topological states. In two dimensions, their entanglement spectra are described by conformal field theories but the symmetry resolution is largely unexplored. However, addressing this problem numerically requires system sizes beyond the reach of exact diagonalization. Here, we develop tensor network methods that can access much larger systems and determine universal and nonuniversal features in their entanglement. Specifically, we construct one-dimensional matrix product operators that encapsulate all the ent…
We use an entanglement measure that respects the superselection of particle number to study the non-local properties of symmetry-protected topological edge states. Considering half-filled M-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladders as an example, we show that the topological properties and the operational entanglement extractable from the boundaries are intimately connected. Topological phases with at least two filled edge states have the potential to realize genuine, non-bipartite, many-body entanglement which can be transferred to a quantum register. The entanglement is extractable when the fil…
Symmetry is an important property of quantum mechanical systems which may dramatically influence their behavior in and out of equilibrium. In this paper, we study the effect of symmetry on tripartite entanglement properties of typical states in symmetric sectors of Hilbert space. In particular, we consider Abelian symmetries and derive an explicit expression for the logarithmic entanglement negativity of systems with $\mathbb{Z}_N$ and $U(1)$ symmetry groups. To this end, we develop a diagrammatic method to incorporate partial transpose within the random matrix theory of symmetric states and f…
We study a three-leg spin-1/2 ladder with geometrically frustrated interleg interactions. We call this model an anisotropic triangular-strip (ATS) model. We numerically and field-theoretically show that its ground state belongs to a gapless symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase. The numerical approach is based on density-matrix renormalization group analyses of the entanglement entropy and the entanglement spectrum. Whereas the entanglement entropy exhibits a critical behavior, the entanglement spectrum is nontrivially degenerate. These entanglement properties imply that the ground state …
We report that a spin-1/2 tetrahedral Heisenberg chain realizes a gapless symmetry-protected topological (gSPT) phase characterized by the coexistence of the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid criticality due to chirality degrees of freedom and the symmetry-protected edge state due to spin degrees of freedom. This gSPT phase has an interesting feature that no symmetry forbids the trivial spin gap opening but a discrete symmetry, $\mathbb Z_3\times\mathbb Z_2^T$, forbids the unique gapped ground state. In the first part of the paper, we numerically show the coexistence of a critical entanglement entropy…
We introduce the subsystem symmetry-preserving real-space entanglement renormalization group and apply it to study bifurcating flows generated by linear and fractal subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases in two spatial dimensions. We classify all bifurcating fixed points that are given by subsystem symmetric cluster states with two qubits per unit cell. In particular, we find that the square lattice cluster state is a quotient-bifurcating fixed point, while the cluster states derived from Yoshida's first order fractal spin liquid models are self-bifurcating fixed points. We discuss th…
Identifying topological properties is a major challenge because, by definition, topological states do not have a local order parameter. While a generic solution to this challenge is not available yet, a broad class of topological states, namely symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states, can be identified by distinctive degeneracies in their entanglement spectrum. Here, we propose and realize two complementary protocols to probe these degeneracies based on, respectively, symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies and measurement-based computational algorithms. The two protocols link quantum inf…
Topologically ordered phases of matter can be characterized by the presence of a universal, constant contribution to the entanglement entropy known as the topological entanglement entropy (TEE). The TEE can been calculated for Abelian phases via a "cut-and-glue" approach by treating the entanglement cut as a physical cut, coupling the resulting gapless edges with explicit tunneling terms, and computing the entanglement between the two edges. We provide a first step towards extending this methodology to non-Abelian topological phases, focusing on the generalized Moore-Read (MR) fractional quant…
We study the non-adiabatic dynamics of a typical symmetry-protected topological phase-the Haldane insulator phase with broken bond-centered inversion. By continuously breaking the middle chain, we find the gap closes at a critical point in the deep Haldane insulator regime with a change of particle number partition of the left or right system. The adiabatic evolution fails at this critical point and we show how to predict the dynamics of the entanglement entropy near this point using a two-level model. These results show that one can find a critical regime where the entanglement measurement is…

Topological quantum matter is typically associated with gapped phases and edge modes protected by the bulk gap. In contrast, recent work (Phys. Rev. B 104, 075132) proposed intrinsically gapless topological phases that, in one dimension, carry protected edge modes only when the bulk is a gapless Luttinger liquid. The edge modes of such a topological Luttinger liquid (TLL) descend from a nonlocal string order that is forbidden in gapped phases and whose precise form depends on the symmetry class of the system. In this work, we propose a powerful and unbiased entanglement-based smoking gun signa…
