Topologically ordered phases of matter can be characterized by the presence of a universal, constant contribution to the entanglement entropy known as the topological entanglement entropy (TEE). The TEE can been calculated for Abelian phases via a "cut-and-glue" approach by treating the entanglement cut as a physical cut, coupling the resulting gapless edges with explicit tunneling terms, and computing the entanglement between the two edges. We provide a first step towards extending this methodology to non-Abelian topological phases, focusing on the generalized Moore-Read (MR) fractional quantum Hall states at filling fractions $ν=1/n$. We consider interfaces between different MR states, write down explicit gapping interactions, which we motivate using an anyon condensation picture, and compute the entanglement entropy for an entanglement cut lying along the interface. Our work provides new insight towards understanding the connections between anyon condensation, gapped interfaces of non-Abelian phases, and TEE.
We study the composite Charged Spin Texture (CST) over the Moore-Read quantum Hall state that arises when a collection of elementary CSTs are moved to the same location. Following an algebraic approach based on the characteristic pair correlations of the Moore-Read state, we find that the resulting CST is set by the fusion sector of the underlying non-Abelian quasiparticles. This phenomenon provides a novel way to read out the quantum register of a non-Abelian topologically ordered phase.
We investigate the nature of the quantum Hall liquid in a half-filled second Landau level ($n=1$) as a function of band mass anisotropy using numerical exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We find increasing the mass anisotropy induces a quantum phase transition from the Moore-Read state to a charge density wave state. By analyzing the energy spectrum, guiding center structure factors and by adding weak pinning potentials, we show that this charge density wave is a uni-directional quantum Hall stripe, which has a periodicity of a few magnetic leng…
We consider an interface separating the Moore-Read state and Halperin 331 state in a half filled Landau level, which can be realized in a double quantum well system with varying inter-well tunneling and/or interaction strength. We find in the presence of electron tunneling and strong Coulomb interaction across the interface, all charge modes localize and the only propagating mode left is a chiral Majorana fermion mode. Methods to probe this neutral mode are proposed. Quantum phase transition between the Moore-Read and Halperin 331 states is described by a network of such Majorana fermion modes…
Identifying and understanding interacting systems that can host non-Abelian topological phases with fractionalized quasiparticles have attracted intense attentions in the past twenty years. Theoretically, it is possible to realize a rich variety of such states by coupling two Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states together through gapping out part of the low energy degrees of freedom. So far, there are some indications, but no robust example has been established in bilayer systems for realizing the non-Abelian state in the past. Here, we present a phase diagram of a double-layer bosonic …
We identify Moore-Read wavefunctions, describing non-abelian statistics in fractional quantum Hall systems, with the instanton partition of N=2 superconformal quiver gauge theories at suitable values of masses and Ω-background parameters. This is obtained by extending to rational conformal field theories the SU(2) gauge quiver/Liouville field theory duality recently found by Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa. A direct link between the Moore-Read Hall $n$-body wavefunctions and Z_n-equivariant Donaldson polynomials is pointed out.
We study charged spin textures (CST) over the Moore-Read quantum Hall state at filling factor 5/2. We develop an algebraic framework and show that the pairing condition that is inherent in the Moore-Read state naturally leads to a class of charged spin textures, labeled by winding numbers [w_I, w_II]. The fundamental CST, with labels [1,0] and electric charge e/4, is identified with the polar core vortex known in the spin-1 BEC literature. The spin texture carried by the fusion product of fundamental CSTs is correlated with the fusion channel of the underlying non-Abelian quasiholes.
This work concerns Ising quasiholes in Moore-Read type lattice wave functions derived from conformal field theory. We commence with constructing Moore-Read type lattice states and then add quasiholes to them. By use of Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations, we analyze the features of the quasiholes, such as their size, shape, charge, and braiding properties. The braiding properties, which turn out to be the same as in the continuum Moore-Read state, demonstrate the topological attributes of the Moore-Read lattice states in a direct way. We also derive parent Hamiltonians for which the states with…
We study the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effects in HgTe quantum wells using exact diagonalization. Our results show that Laughlin states, the Moore-Read state, and the Read-Rezayi $Z_3$ state can all be supported. However, near the level crossing point (of the single-particle spectrum), the gap can be destroyed by Landau level mixing, and the Moore-Read state and the Read-Rezayi state dominate over their respective competing states only for wide wells. For smaller well widths the Moore-Read state crosses over to the composite fermion Fermi sea, while the Read-Rezayi state loses its…
Moore-Read states can be expressed as conformal blocks of the underlying rational conformal field theory, which provides a well explored description for the insertion of quasiholes. It is known, however, that quasielectrons are more difficult to describe in continuous systems, since the natural guess for how to construct them leads to a singularity. In this work, we show that the singularity problem does not arise for lattice Moore-Read states. This allows us to construct Moore-Read Pfaffian states on lattices for filling fraction 5/2 with both quasiholes and quasielectrons in a simple way. We…
Results from exact diagonalization show that the spin-polarized Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is adiabatically connected with the Moore-Read wave function for systems with up to Nel = 16 electrons on the surface of a sphere. Varying the Haldane pseudopotentials v1 and v3, keeping all others at their value for Coulomb interaction, energy gap and (v1,v3)-dependent ground state overlap with the Moore-Read state form two ridges whose peak positions and extent in the (v1,v3)-plane essentially coincide. Thus, the physics of the Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is indeed captured by the Moore-Read sta…
We study charged excitations of the non-abelian Moore-Read liquid at filling factor nu=5/2, allowing for spin depolarization. Using a combination of numerical studies, and taking account of non-zero well widths, we find that at sufficiently low Zeeman energy it is energetically favourable for charge e/4 quasiholes to bind into "skyrmions" of charge e/2. We show that skyrmion formation is further promoted by disorder, and argue that this can lead to a depolarized nu=5/2 ground state in realistic experimental situations. We comment on the consequences for the activated transport.
We present evidence supporting the weakly paired Moore-Read phase in the half-filled second Landau level, focusing on some of the qualitative features of its excitations. Based on numerical studies, we show that systems with odd particle number at the flux $N_ϕ=2N-3$ can be interpreted as a neutral fermion mode of one unpaired fermion, which is gapped. The mode is found to have two distinct minima, providing a signature that could be observed by photoluminescence. In the presence of two quasiparticles the same neutral fermion excitation is shown to be gapless, confirming expectations for non-A…
The non-Abelian topological order has attracted a lot of attention for its fundamental importance and exciting prospect of topological quantum computation. However, explicit demonstration or identification of the non-Abelian states and the associated statistics in a microscopic model is very challenging. Here, based on density-matrix renormalization group calculation, we provide a complete characterization of the universal properties of bosonic Moore-Read state on Haldane honeycomb lattice model at filling number $ν=1$ for larger systems, including both the edge spectrum and the bulk anyonic q…
In this paper we explore the braiding properties of the Moore-Read fractional Hall sequence, which amounts to computing the adiabatic evolution of the Hall liquid when the anyons are moved along various trajectories. In this work, the anyons are pinned to precise spatial configurations by using specific external potentials. Such external potentials break the translational symmetry and it appears that one will be forced to simulate the braidings on the entire many-body Hilbert space, an absolutely prohibitive scenario. We demonstrate how to overcome this difficulty and obtain the exact braiding…
We present the quantitative phase diagram of the bilayer bosonic fractional quantum Hall system on the torus geometry at total filling factor $ν=1$ in the lowest Landau level. We consider short-range interactions within and between the two layers, as well as the inter-layer tunneling. In the fully polarized regime, we provide an updated detailed numerical analysis to establish the presence of the Moore-Read phase of both even and odd numbers of particles. In the actual bilayer situation, we find that both inter-layer interactions and tunneling can provide the physical mechanism necessary for t…
Quasiholes in certain fractional quantum Hall states are promising candidates for the experimental realization of non-Abelian anyons. They are assumed to be localized excitations, and to display non-Abelian statistics when sufficiently separated, but these properties have not been explicitly demonstrated except for the Moore-Read state. In this work, we apply the newly developed matrix product state technique to examine these exotic excitations. For the Moore-Read and the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ Read-Rezayi states, we estimate the quasihole radii, and determine the correlation lengths associated with t…
We calculate the dynamical structure factor of the ν=5/2 non-abelian quantum Hall state in the dipole approximation, valid for large momenta. Due to the fact that both quasi-particles (qps) and quasi-holes (qhs) have an internal Majorana degree of freedom, a qp-qh pair has a fermionic degree of freedom which can be either empty or occupied, and leads to a splitting of the roton mode. Observation of this splitting by means of finite wavelength optical spectroscopy could provide evidence for Majorana modes in the ν=5/2 quantum Hall state.
The abelian hierarchy of quantum Hall states accounts for most of the states in the lowest Landau level, and there is evidence of a similar hierarchy of non-abelian states emanating from the ν = 5/2 Moore-Read state in the second Landau level. Extending a recently developed formalism for hierarchical quasihole condensation, we present a theory that allows for the explicit construction of the ground state wave function, as well as its quasiparticle excitations, for any state based on the abelian hierarchy. We relate our construction to structures in rational conformal field theory and stress th…
We use conformal field theory to construct model wavefunctions for a gapless interface between lattice versions of a bosonic Laughlin state and a fermionic Moore-Read state, both at $ν=1/2$. The properties of the resulting model state, such as particle density, correlation function and Rényi entanglement entropy are then studied using the Monte Carlo approach. Moreover, we construct the wavefunctions also for anyonic excitations (quasiparticles and quasiholes). We study their density profile, charge and statistics. We show that, similarly to the Laughlin-Laughlin case studied earlier, some any…
We develop a proposal to realise a widely tunable and clean quantum phase transition in bilayer graphene between two paradigmatic fractionalized phases of matter: the Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall state and the composite Fermi liquid metal. This transition can be realized at total fillings $ν=\pm 3+1/2$ and the critical point can be controllably accessed by tuning either the interlayer electric bias or the perpendicular magnetic field values over a wide range of parameters. We study the transition numerically within a model that contains all leading single particle corrections to the band…
We introduce a family of strongly-correlated spin wave functions on arbitrary spin-1/2 and spin-1 lattices in one and two dimensions. These states are lattice analogues of Moore-Read states of particles at filling fraction 1/q, which are non-Abelian Fractional Quantum Hall states in 2D. One parameter enables us to perform an interpolation between the continuum limit, where the states become continuum Moore-Read states of bosons (odd q) and fermions (even q), and the lattice limit. We show numerical evidence that the topological entanglement entropy stays the same along the interpolation for so…
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) observed at half filling of the second Landau level is believed to be caused by a pairing of composite fermions captured by the Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function. The generating Hamiltonian for the Moore-Read Pfaffian is a purely three-body model that breaks particle-hole symmetry and lacks other properties, such as dominate two-body repulsive interactions, expected from a physical model of the FQHE. We use exact diagonalization to study the low energy states of a more physical two-body generator model derived from the three-body model. We find that th…
We introduce a family of paired-composite-fermion trial wave functions for any odd Cooper-pair angular momentum. These wave functions are parameter-free and can be efficiently projected into the lowest Landau level. We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study three cases: Firstly, the Moore-Read phase, which serves us as a benchmark. Secondly, we explore the pairing associated with the anti-Pfaffian and the particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian. Specifically, we assess whether their trial states feature exponentially decaying correlations and thus represent gapped phases of matter. For Moor…
Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multi-body Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degrees of in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.
We analyze the properties of a non-Abelian spin-1 chiral spin liquid state proposed by Greiter and Thomale [PRL 102, 207203 (2009)] using variational Monte Carlo. In this state the bosonic $ν= 1$ Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function is used to describe a gas of bosonic spin flips on a square lattice with one flux quantum per plaquette. For toroidal geometries there is a three-dimensional space of these states corresponding to the topological degeneracy of the bosonic Moore-Read state on the torus. We show that spin correlations for different states in this space become indistinguishable for large…
We propose a derivative operator formed as a function of derivatives of the electron coordinates. When the derivative operator is applied to the Laughlin wave function, two new wave functions in the lowest Landau level at filling factor 1/2 are generated. For systems of 4, 6, and 8 electrons in spherical geometry, it is shown that the first wave function has nearly unity overlap with the particle-hole conjugate of the Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function, therefore together with the Moore-Read Pfaffian state forms a particle-hole conjugate pair. The second wave function has essentially perfect pa…
We examine the quantum phase diagram of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in the lowest two Landau levels in half-filled bilayer structures as a function of tunneling strength and layer separation, i.e., we revisit the lowest Landau level filling factor 1/2 bilayer problem and make new predictions involving bilayers in the half-filled second Landau level (i.e., filling factor 5/2). Using numerical exact diagonalization we investigate the important question of whether this system supports a FQHE described by the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state in the strong tunneling regime. In th…
Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil "finger print" evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological …
Bilayer graphene has been predicted to give unprecedented tunability of the electron-electron interaction with the help of external parameters, allowing one to stabilize different fractional quantum Hall states. Recent experimental works make theoretical analysis of such systems extremely relevant. In this paper we describe a methodology for investigating the possibility of realizing specific fractional quantum Hall states in bilayer graphene taking into account polarization effects and virtual interband transitions. We apply this methodology to explore the possibility of realizing the Moore-R…
We study a quantum Hall bilayer system of bosons at total filling factor $ν= 1$, and study the phase that results from short ranged pair-tunneling combined with short ranged interlayer interactions. We introduce two exactly solvable model Hamiltonians which both yield the coupled Moore-Read state [Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~{\bf 108}, 256809 (2012)] as a ground state, when projected onto fixed particle numbers in each layer. One of these Hamiltonians describes a gapped topological phase while the other is gapless. However, on introduction of a pair tunneling term, the second system becomes gapped and de…
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling fractions 7/3 and 5/2 in the presence of the spin-orbit interaction, using the exact diagonalization method and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method in a spherical geometry. Trial wave functions at these fillings are the Laughlin state and the Moore-Reed-Pfaffian state. The ground state excitation energy gaps and pair-correlation functions at fractional filling factor 7/3 and 5/2 in the second Landau level are calculated. We find that the spin-orbit interaction stabilizes the fractional quantum Hall states.

In this thesis, I will present studies on the collective modes of the fractional quantum Hall states, which are bulk neutral excitations reflecting the incompressibility that defines the topological nature of these states. It was first pointed out by Haldane that the non-commutative geometry of the fractional quantum Hall effects (FQHE) plays an important role in the intra-Landau-level dynamics. The geometrical aspects of the FQHE will be illustrated by calculating the linear response to a spatially varying electromagnetic field, and by a numerical scheme for constructing model wavefunctions f…
We consider a chiral spin liquid constructed using the parton theory. This state supports non-Abelian anyons and neutral fermions, which share some similarities with the celebrated Moore-Read state. The edge physics of the parton state and the Moore-Read state is very different. Based on conformal field theory (CFT) analysis, it is proposed that the edge states exhibit an emergent SO(5) symmetry. The counting of edge states in the low-lying SO(5)$_{1}$ CFT towers is computed. The chiral spin liquid is generated using tensor network methods, which allows us to confirm the SO(5)$_{1}$ counting u…
We analyze transitions between quantum Hall ground states at prominent filling factors $ν$ in the spherical geometry by tuning the width parameter of the Zhang-Das Sarma interaction potential. We find that incompressible ground states evolve adiabatically under this tuning, whereas the compressible ones are driven through a first order phase transition. Overlap calculations show that the resulting phase is increasingly well described by appropriate analytic model wavefunctions (Laughlin, Moore-Read, Read-Rezayi). This scenario is shared by both odd ($ν=1/3, 1/5, 3/5, 7/3, 11/5, 13/5$) and even…
We analyse the inner products of edge state wavefunctions in the fractional quantum Hall effect, specifically for the Laughlin and Moore-Read states. We use an effective description for these inner products given by a large-$N$ expansion ansatz proposed in recent work by J. Dubail, N. Read and E. Rezayi, PRB 86, 245310 (2012). As noted by these authors, the terms in this ansatz can be constrained using symmetry, a procedure we perform to high orders. We then check this conjecture by calculating the overlaps exactly for small system sizes and compare the numerics with our high-order expansion. …
We present a detailed analysis of bi-partite entanglement in the non-Abelian Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall state of bosons and fermions on the torus. In particular, we show that the entanglement spectra can be decomposed into intricate combinations of different sectors of the conformal field theory describing the edge physics, and that the edge level counting and tower structure can be microscopically understood by considering the vicinity of the thin-torus limit. We also find that the boundary entropy density of the Moore-Read state is markedly higher than in the Laughlin states investig…
We investigate the disorder-driven phase transitions in bosonic fractional quantum Hall liquids at filling factors $f=1/2$ and $f=1$ in the lowest Landau level. We use the evolution of ground-state entanglement entropy, fidelity susceptibility, and Hall conductance with increasing disorder strength to identify the underlying phase transitions. The critical disorder strengths obtained from these different quantities are consistent with each other, validating the reliability of our numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization. At $f=1/2$, we observe a clear transition from the bosonic L…
Non-Abelian excitations are an interesting feature of many fractional quantum Hall phases, including those phases described by the Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) wave function. However, the detection of the non-Abelian quasiparticles is challenging. Here, we consider a system described by the Moore-Read wave function, and assume that impurity particles bind to its quasiholes. Then, the angular momentum of the impurities, reflected also by the impurity density, provides a useful witness of the physics of the non-Abelian excitations. By demanding that the impurities are constrained to the lowest Landa…
Using exact diagonalization in the spherical geometry, we investigate systems of localized quasiholes at nu=5/2 for interactions interpolating between the pure Coulomb and the three-body interaction for which the Moore-Read state is the exact ground state. We show that the charge e/4 quasihole can be easily localized by means of a delta-function pinning potential. Using a tuned smooth pinning potential, the quasihole radius can be limited to approximately three magnetic length units. For systems of two quasiholes, adiabatic continuity between the Moore-Read and the Coulomb limit holds for the …
We show the model wavefunctions for the neutral collective modes in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states have simple analytic forms obtained from judicially reducing the powers of selected pairs in the ground state Jastrow factor. This scheme of "pair excitations" works for the magneto-roton modes of single-component Abelian and non-Abeliean FQH states, as well as the neutral fermion mode for the Moore-Read (MR) state. The analytic wavefunctions allow us to compute the "quadrupole gap" of the magneto-roton mode in the thermodynamic limit, which was previously inaccessible to the numerics. The …
We develop a composite Dirac fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effects (QHE) near charge neutrality in graphene. We show that the interactions between the composite Dirac fermions lead to dynamical mass generation through exciton condensation. The four-fold spin-valley degeneracy is fully lifted due to the mass generation and the exchange effects such that the odd-denominator fractional QHE observed in the vicinity of charge neutrality can be understood in terms of the integer QHE of the composite Dirac fermions. At the filling factor $ν=1/2$, we show that the massive composite Di…
We investigate, with the help of Monte-Carlo and exact-diagonalization calculations in the spherical geometry, several compressible and incompressible candidate wave functions for the recently observed quantum Hall state at the filling factor $ν=1/4$ in a wide quantum well. The quantum well is modeled as a two-component system by retaining its two lowest subbands. We make a direct connection with the phenomenological effective-bilayer model, which is commonly used in the description of a wide quantum well, and we compare our findings with the established results at $ν=1/2$ in the lowest Landau…
