We use conformal field theory to construct model wavefunctions for a gapless interface between lattice versions of a bosonic Laughlin state and a fermionic Moore-Read state, both at $ν=1/2$. The properties of the resulting model state, such as particle density, correlation function and Rényi entanglement entropy are then studied using the Monte Carlo approach. Moreover, we construct the wavefunctions also for anyonic excitations (quasiparticles and quasiholes). We study their density profile, charge and statistics. We show that, similarly to the Laughlin-Laughlin case studied earlier, some anyons (the Laughlin Abelian ones) can cross the interface, while others (the non-Abelian ones) lose their anyonic character in such a process. Also, we argue that, under an assumption of local particle exchange, multiple interfaces give rise to a topological degeneracy, which can be interpreted as originating from Majorana zero modes.
The energy per particle of many body wavefunctions that mix Laughlin liquid with crystalline correlations for periodic samples in the Haldane-Rezayi configuration is numerically evaluated for periodic samples. The Monte Carlo algorithm is employed and the wave functions are constructed in such a way that have the same zeroes as the periodic Laughlin states. Results with up to 16 particles show that these trial wavefunctions have lower energy than the periodic Laughlin states for finite samples even at $ν=1/3$. Preliminary results for 36 particles suggest that this tendency could reach the ther…
Employing the Haldane-Rezayi periodic representation, the crystalline determinantal Hall crystal mean field solutions derived in previous works are used to construct variational wavefunctions for the FQHE at $ν=1/q$. The proposed states optimize the short range correlations in a similar measure as the Laughlin ones, since the zero of the states when the coordinates of two particles join is of order $q$. However, the proposed wavefunctions also incorporate the crystalline correlations of the mean field problem, through a determinantal mean field function entering their construction. The above p…
Number of zeros seen by a particle around small clusters of other particles is encoded in the root partition, and partly characterizes the correlations in fractional quantum Hall trial wavefunctions. We explore a generalization wherein we consider the counting of zeros seen by a cluster of particles on another cluster. Numbers of such zeros between clusters in the Laughlin wavefunctions are fully determined by the root partition. However, such a counting is unclear for general Jain states where a polynomial expansion is difficult. Here we consider the simplest state beyond the Laughlin wavefun…
We study the interfaces between lattice Laughlin states at different fillings. We propose a class of model wavefunctions for such systems constructed using conformal field theory. We find a nontrivial form of charge conservation at the interface, similar to the one encountered in the field theory works from the literature. Using Monte Carlo methods, we evaluate the correlation function and entanglement entropy at the border. Furthermore, we construct the wavefunction for quasihole excitations and evaluate their mutual statistics with respect to quasiholes originating at the same or the other s…
We identify Moore-Read wavefunctions, describing non-abelian statistics in fractional quantum Hall systems, with the instanton partition of N=2 superconformal quiver gauge theories at suitable values of masses and Ω-background parameters. This is obtained by extending to rational conformal field theories the SU(2) gauge quiver/Liouville field theory duality recently found by Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa. A direct link between the Moore-Read Hall $n$-body wavefunctions and Z_n-equivariant Donaldson polynomials is pointed out.
We propose a set of spin system wavefunctions that are very similar to lattice versions of the Laughlin states. The wavefunction are conformal blocks of conformal field theories, and for filling factor ν=1/2 we provide a parent Hamiltonian, which is valid for any even number of spins and is at the same time a 2D generalization of the Haldane-Shastry model. We also demonstrate that the Kalmeyer-Laughlin state is reproduced as a particular case of this model. Finally, we discuss various properties of the spin states and point out several analogies to known results for the Laughlin states.
Topological phases of matter are distinct from conventional ones by their lack of a local order parameter. Still in the quantum Hall effect, hidden order parameters exist and constitute the basis for the celebrated composite-particle approach. Whether similar hidden orders exist in 2D and 3D symmetry protected topological phases (SPTs) is a largely open question. Here we introduce a new approach for generating SPT groundstates, based on a generalization of the Laughlin wavefunction. This approach gives a simple and unifying picture of some classes of SPTs in 1D and 2D, and reveals their hidden…
We provide a robust and generic method to assess the screening properties and extract the scaling exponents of quasiparticle edge excitations of quantum Hall states from model wavefunctions. We numerically implement this method for the fundamental quasihole and hole excitations of several model states. For the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Z_3-Read-Rezayi states, we find agreement with the predicted edge theory, verifying the bulk-edge correspondence. We also use this to obtain the first clear microscopic demonstration of the pathologies of the Gaffnian wavefunctions.
In this work, two quasiparticle excitation energies per particle are calculated analytically for systems with up to $N = 7$ electrons in both Laughlin and composite fermions (CF) theories by considering the full jellium potential which consists of three parts, the electron-electron, electron-background, and background-background Coulomb interactions. The exact results we have obtained confirm the fact that the CF-wavefunction for two quasiparticles has lower energy than Laughlin wavefunction though the found difference between Laughlin and (CF) two quasiparticle energies decreases as the syste…
Interfaces between topologically distinct phases of matter reveal a remarkably rich phenomenology. We study the experimentally relevant interface between a Laughlin phase at filling factor $ν=1/3$ and a Halperin 332 phase at filling factor $ν=2/5$. Based on our recent construction of chiral topological interfaces in [Nat. Commun. 10, 1860 (2019)], we study a family of model wavefunctions that captures both the bulk and interface properties. These model wavefunctions are built within the matrix product state framework. The validity of our approach is substantiated through extensive comparisons …
We study lattice wave functions obtained from the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. Following Moore and Read's construction, the Kalmeyer-Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state is defined as a correlation function of primary fields. By an additional insertion of Kac-Moody currents, we associate a wave function to each state of the conformal field theory. These wave functions span the complete Hilbert space of the lattice system. On the cylinder, we study global properties of the lattice states analytically and correlation functions numerically using a Metropolis Monte Carlo …
Non-Abelian excitations are an interesting feature of many fractional quantum Hall phases, including those phases described by the Moore-Read (or Pfaffian) wave function. However, the detection of the non-Abelian quasiparticles is challenging. Here, we consider a system described by the Moore-Read wave function, and assume that impurity particles bind to its quasiholes. Then, the angular momentum of the impurities, reflected also by the impurity density, provides a useful witness of the physics of the non-Abelian excitations. By demanding that the impurities are constrained to the lowest Landa…
We introduce a family of paired-composite-fermion trial wave functions for any odd Cooper-pair angular momentum. These wave functions are parameter-free and can be efficiently projected into the lowest Landau level. We use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study three cases: Firstly, the Moore-Read phase, which serves us as a benchmark. Secondly, we explore the pairing associated with the anti-Pfaffian and the particle-hole-symmetric Pfaffian. Specifically, we assess whether their trial states feature exponentially decaying correlations and thus represent gapped phases of matter. For Moor…
Model Fractional Quantum Hall States on Lattices: Exact Parent Hamiltonians and Routes to Realization

Motivated by the physics of the Moore-Read ν= 1/2 state away from half-filling, we investigate collective states of non-abelian e/4 quasiparticles in a magnetic field. We consider two types of collective states: incompressible liquids and Wigner crystals. In the incompressible liquid case, we construct a natural series of states which can be thought of as a non-abelian generalization of the Laughlin states. These states are associated with a series of hierarchical states derived from the Moore-Read state - the simplest of which occur at filling fraction 8/17 and 7/13. Interestingly, we find th…
The Bose-Hubbard model subjected to an effective magnetic field hosts a plethora of phases with different topological orders when tuning the chemical potential. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we identify several gapped phases near the first Mott lobe at strong interactions. They are connected by a particle-hole symmetry to a variety of quantum Hall states stabilized at low fillings. We characterize phases of both particle and hole type and identify signatures compatible with Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Bosonic Integer Quantum Hall states by calculating the quantized Hall …
We construct model wavefunctions for a family of single-quasielectron states supported by the $ν=1/3$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluid. The charge $e^*$ = $e/3$ quasielectron state is identified as a composite of a charge-$2e^*$ quasiparticle and a $-e^*$ quasihole, orbiting around their common center of charge with relative angular momentum $n\hbar > 0$, and corresponds precisely to the "composite fermion" construction based on a filled $n=0$ Landau level plus an extra particle in level $n > 0$. An effective three-body model (one $2e^*$ quasiparticle and two $-e^*$ quasiholes) is introduce…
We use the entanglement negativity, a bipartite measure of entanglement in mixed quantum states, to study how multipartite entanglement constrains the real-space structure of the ground state wavefunctions of $(2+1)$-dimensional topological phases. We focus on the (Abelian) Laughlin and (non-Abelian) Moore-Read states at filling fraction $ν=1/m$. We show that a combination of entanglement negativities, calculated with respect to specific cylinder and torus geometries, determines a necessary condition for when a topological state can be disentangled, i.e., factorized into a tensor product of st…
We study the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effects in HgTe quantum wells using exact diagonalization. Our results show that Laughlin states, the Moore-Read state, and the Read-Rezayi $Z_3$ state can all be supported. However, near the level crossing point (of the single-particle spectrum), the gap can be destroyed by Landau level mixing, and the Moore-Read state and the Read-Rezayi state dominate over their respective competing states only for wide wells. For smaller well widths the Moore-Read state crosses over to the composite fermion Fermi sea, while the Read-Rezayi state loses its…
Many bosonic (fermionic) fractional quantum Hall states, such as Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi wavefunctions, belong to a special class of orthogonal polynomials: the Jack polynomials (times a Vandermonde determinant). This fundamental observation allows to point out two different recurrence relations for the coefficients of the permanent (Slater) decomposition of the bosonic (fermionic) states. Here we provide an explicit Fock space representation for these wavefunctions by introducing a two-body squeezing operator which represents them as a Jastrow operator applied to reference states…
Certain fractional quantum Hall wavefunctions -- particularly including the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi wavefunctions -- have special structure that makes them amenable to analysis using an exeptionally wide range of techniques including conformal field theory (CFT), thin cylinder or torus limit, study of symmetric polynomials and Jack polynomials, and so-called ``special" parent Hamiltonians. This review discusses these techniques as well as explaining to what degree some other quantum Hall wavefunctions share this special structure. Along the way we will explore the physics of quan…
Model quantum Hall states including Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states are generalized into appropriate anisotropic form. The generalized states are exact zero-energy eigenstates of corresponding anisotropic two- or multi-body Hamiltonians, and explicitly illustrate the existence of geometric degrees of in the fractional quantum Hall effect. These generalized model quantum Hall states can provide a good description of the quantum Hall system with anisotropic interactions. Some numeric results of these anisotropic quantum Hall states are also presented.
We use particle entanglement spectra to characterize bosonic quantum Hall states on lattices, motivated by recent studies of bosonic atoms on optical lattices. Unlike for the related problem of fractional Chern insulators, very good trial wavefunctions are known for fractional quantum Hall states on lattices. We focus on the entanglement spectra for the Laughlin state at $ν=1/2$ for the non-Abelian Moore-Read state at $ν=1$. We undertake a comparative study of these trial states to the corresponding groundstates of repulsive two-body or three-body contact interactions on the lattice. The magni…
Trial states describing anyonic quasiholes in the Laughlin state were found early on, and it is therefore natural to expect that one should also be able to create anyonic quasielectrons. Nevertheless, the existing trial wavefunctions for quasielectrons show behaviors that are not compatible with the expected topological properties or their construction involves ad hoc elements. It was shown, however, that for lattice fractional quantum Hall systems, it is possible to find a relatively simple quasielectron wavefunction that has all the expected properties [New J. Phys. 20, 033029 (2018)]. This …
The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect is one of the most striking phenomena in condensed matter physics. It is described by a simple Laughlin wavefunction and has been thoroughly studied both theoretically and experimentally. In lattice systems, however, such an effect has not been observed, there are few simple models displaying it, and only few mechanisms leading to it are known. Here we propose a new way of constructing lattice Hamiltonians with local interactions and FQH like ground states. In particular, we obtain a spin 1/2 model with a bosonic Laughlin like ground state, displaying a…

We present a detailed analysis of bi-partite entanglement in the non-Abelian Moore-Read fractional quantum Hall state of bosons and fermions on the torus. In particular, we show that the entanglement spectra can be decomposed into intricate combinations of different sectors of the conformal field theory describing the edge physics, and that the edge level counting and tower structure can be microscopically understood by considering the vicinity of the thin-torus limit. We also find that the boundary entropy density of the Moore-Read state is markedly higher than in the Laughlin states investig…
We consider a two dimensional (2D) model of particles interacting in a Landau level. We work in a finite disk geometry and take the particles to interact with a linearly decreasing two-body Haldane pseudo-potential. We show that the ground state subspace of this model is spanned by the wave-functions that can be written as polynomial conformal blocks (of an arbitrary conformal field theory) consistent with the filling fraction (scaling dimension). To remove degeneracies, we then add a quadratic perturbation to the Hamiltonian and show that; 1. Conformal blocks constructed using the Moore-Read …
Interfaces between topologically distinct phases of matter reveal a remarkably rich phenomenology. To go beyond effective field theories, we study the prototypical example of such an interface between two Abelian states, namely the Laughlin and Halperin states. Using matrix product states, we propose a family of model wavefunctions for the whole system including both bulks and the interface. We show through extensive numerical studies that it unveils both the universal properties of the system, such as the central charge of the gapless interface mode and its microscopic features. It also captu…
We obtain an exact matrix-product-state (MPS) representation of a large series of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in various geometries of genus 0. The states in question include all paired k=2 Jack polynomials, such as the Moore-Read and Gaffnian states, as well as the Read-Rezayi k=3 state. We also outline the procedures through which the MPS of other model FQH states can be obtained, provided their wavefunction can be written as a correlator in a 1+1 conformal field theory (CFT). The auxiliary Hilbert space of the MPS, which gives the counting of the entanglement spectrum, is then simp…
Trial wavefunctions like the Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states which minimize short range multibody interactions are candidate states for describing the fractional quantum Hall effects at filling factors $ν= 1/2$ and $ν= 2/5$ in the second Landau level. These trial wavefunctions are unique zero energy states of three body and four body interaction Hamiltonians respectively but are not close to the ground states of the Coulomb interaction. Previous studies using extensive parameter scans have found optimal two body interactions that produce states close to these. Here we focus on short ranged f…
