In this work we provide a complete description of the lifecycle of entanglement during the real-time motion of open quantum systems. The quantum environment can have arbitrary (e.g. structured) spectral density. The entanglement can be seen constructively as a Lego: its bricks are the modes of the environment. These bricks are connected to each other via operator transforms. The central result is that each infinitesimal time interval one new (incoming) mode of the environment gets coupled (entangled) to the open system, and one new (outgoing) mode gets irreversibly decoupled (disentangled from future). Moreover, each moment of time, only a few relevant modes (3 - 4 in the considered cases) are non-negligibly coupled to the future quantum motion. These relevant mode change (flow, or renormalize) with time. As a result, the temporal entanglement has the structure of a matrix-product operator. This allows us to pose a number of questions and to answer them in this work: what is the intrinsic quantum complexity of a real time motion; does this complexity saturate with time, or grows without bounds; how to do the real-time renormalization group in a justified way; how the classical Brownian stochastic trajectories emerge from the quantum evolution; how to construct the few-mode representations of non-Markovian environments. We provide illustrative simulations of the spin-boson model for various spectral densities of the environment: semicircle, subohmic, Ohmic, and superohmic.
We establish a precise connection between discrete wavelet transforms (WTs) and entanglement renormalization (ER), a real-space renormalization group transformation for quantum systems on the lattice, in the context of free particle systems. Specifically, we employ Daubechies wavelets to build approximations to the ground state of the critical Ising model, then demonstrate that these states correspond to instances of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), producing the first known analytic MERA for critical systems.
We investigate the entanglement-renormalization group flows of translation-invariant topological stabilizer models in three dimensions. Fracton models are observed to bifurcate under entanglement renormalization, generically returning at least one copy of the original model. Based on this behavior we formulate the notion of bifurcated equivalence for fracton phases, generalizing foliated fracton equivalence. The notion of quotient superselection sectors is also generalized accordingly. We calculate bifurcating entanglement-renormalization group flows for a wide range of examples and, based on …
Entanglement renormalization refers to a sequence of real-space coarse-graining transformations in which short-range entanglement on successively longer length scales are distilled out. In this work, we introduce a state-based approach, "zipper entanglement renormalization" (ZER), for free-fermion systems. The name derives from a unitary we construct at every renormalization step, dubbed the zipper, which unzips the state into an approximate tensor product between a short-range entangled state and a renormalized one carrying the longer-range entanglement. By successively performing ZER on the …
We investigate the scaling of entanglement entropy in both the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and in its generalization, the branching MERA. We provide analytical upper bounds for this scaling, which take the general form of a boundary law with various types of multiplicative corrections, including power-law corrections all the way to a bulk law. For several cases of interest, we also provide numerical results that indicate that these upper bounds are saturated to leading order. In particular we establish that, by a suitable choice of holographic tree, the branching MER…
We introduce a family of variational ansatz states for chains of anyons which optimally exploits the structure of the anyonic Hilbert space. This ansatz is the natural analog of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz for spin chains. In particular, it has the same interpretation as a coarse-graining procedure and is expected to accurately describe critical systems with algebraically decaying correlations. We numerically investigate the validity of this ansatz using the anyonic golden chain and its relatives as a testbed. This demonstrates the power of entanglement renormalization …
The quantum renormalization group method is applied to study the quantum criticality and entanglement entropy of the ground state of the Ising chain in the presence of antisymmetric anisotropic couplings and alternating exchange interactions. The quantum phase transitions can be characterized by the discontinuity in the second derivative of the energy of renormalized ground state. The phase diagram is obtained by the critical boundary line. The first derivative of entanglement entropy also diverges at the same critical points after enough iterations of the renormalization of coupling constants…
The multi-scale entanglement renormalisation ansatz (MERA) is argued to provide a natural description for topological states of matter. The case of Kitaev's toric code is analyzed in detail and shown to possess a remarkably simple MERA description leading to distillation of the topological degrees of freedom at the top of the tensor network. Kitaev states on an infinite lattice are also shown to be a fixed point of the RG flow associated with entanglement renormalization. All these results generalize to arbitrary quantum double models.
We construct an explicit renormalization group (RG) transformation for Levin and Wen's string-net models on a hexagonal lattice. The transformation leaves invariant the ground-state "fixed-point" wave function of the string-net condensed phase. Our construction also produces an exact representation of the wave function in terms of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). This sets the stage for efficient numerical simulations of string-net models using MERA algorithms. It also provides an explicit quantum circuit to prepare the string-net ground-state wave function using a q…
We introduce the subsystem symmetry-preserving real-space entanglement renormalization group and apply it to study bifurcating flows generated by linear and fractal subsystem symmetry-protected topological phases in two spatial dimensions. We classify all bifurcating fixed points that are given by subsystem symmetric cluster states with two qubits per unit cell. In particular, we find that the square lattice cluster state is a quotient-bifurcating fixed point, while the cluster states derived from Yoshida's first order fractal spin liquid models are self-bifurcating fixed points. We discuss th…
In the context of real-space renormalization group methods, we propose a novel scheme for quantum systems defined on a D-dimensional lattice. It is based on a coarse-graining transformation that attempts to reduce the amount of entanglement of a block of lattice sites before truncating its Hilbert space. Numerical simulations involving the ground state of a 1D system at criticality show that the resulting coarse-grained site requires a Hilbert space dimension that does not grow with successive rescaling transformations. As a result we can address, in a quasi-exact way, tens of thousands of qua…
A quantitative criterion to prove and analyze convergence within the numerical renormalization group (NRG) is introduced. By tracing out a few further NRG shells, the resulting reduced density matrices carry relevant information on numerical accuracy as well as entanglement. Their spectra can thus be analyzed twofold. The smallest eigenvalues provide a sensitive estimate of how much weight is discarded in the low energy description of later iterations. As such, the discarded weight is a clear indicator of the accuracy of a specific NRG calculation. In particular, it indicates in a site-specifi…
The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) provides a natural description of the ground state of a quantum critical Hamiltonian on the lattice. From an optimized MERA, one can extract the scaling dimensions of the underlying conformal field theory. However, extracting conformal data from the ascending superoperator derived from MERA seems to have a limited range of accuracy, even after increasing the bond dimension. Here, we propose an alternative ansatz based on an increasing number of disentangling layers. This leads to generalized versions of MERA that improve the extraction…
We propose algorithms, based on the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz, to obtain the ground state of quantum critical systems in the presence of boundaries, impurities, or interfaces. By exploiting the theory of minimal updates [G. Evenbly and G. Vidal, arXiv:1307.0831], the ground state is completely characterized in terms of a number of variational parameters that is independent of the system size, even though the presence of a boundary, an impurity, or an interface explicitly breaks the translation invariance of the host system. Similarly, computational costs do not scale with…
Understanding the collective behavior of a quantum many-body system, a system composed of a large number of interacting microscopic degrees of freedom, is a key aspect in many areas of contemporary physics. However, as a direct consequence of the difficultly of the so-called many-body problem, many exotic quantum phenomena involving extended systems, such as high temperature superconductivity, remain not well understood on a theoretical level. Entanglement renormalization is a recently proposed numerical method for the simulation of many-body systems which draws together ideas from the renorma…
We propose a tensor network method for investigating strongly disordered systems that is based on an adaptation of entanglement renormalization [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 220405 (2007)]. This method makes use of the strong disorder renormalization group to determine the order in which lattice sites are coarse-grained, which sets the overall structure of the corresponding tensor network ansatz, before optimization using variational energy minimization. Benchmark results from the disordered XXZ model demonstrates that this approach accurately captures ground state entanglement in disordered…
We revisit the applications of integral geometry in AdS$_3$ and argue that the metric of the kinematic space can be realized as the entanglement contour, which is defined as the additive entanglement density. From the renormalization of the entanglement contour, we can holographically understand the operations of disentangler and isometry in multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Furthermore, a renormalization group equation of the long-distance entanglement contour is then derived. We then generalize this integral geometric construction to higher dimensions and in particular demonst…
The entanglement renormalization flow of a (1+1) free boson is formulated as a path integral over some auxiliary scalar fields. The resulting effective theory for these fields amounts to the dilaton term of non-critical string theory in two spacetime dimensions. A connection between the scalar fields in the two theories is provided, allowing to acquire novel insights into how a theory of gravity emerges from the entanglement structure of another one without gravity.
Tensor Network States (TNS) offer an efficient representation for the ground state of quantum many body systems and play an important role in the simulations of them. Numerous TNS are proposed in the past few decades. However, due to the high cost of TNS for two-dimensional systems, a balance between the encoded entanglement and computational complexity of TNS is yet to be reached. In this work we introduce a new Tree Tensor Network (TTN) based TNS dubbed as Fully- Augmented Tree Tensor Network (FATTN) by releasing the constraint in Augmented Tree Tensor Network (ATTN). When disentanglers are …
We investigate the entanglement structure of the continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) [Haegeman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 110, 100402 (2013)] for ground states of quantum field theories (QFTs). The cMERA, proposed as an extension to QFTs of the lattice MERA, is defined directly in the continuum but is nevertheless naturally equipped with a short-distance scale $1/Λ$ that acts as a UV regulator for quantum fluctuations. We consider the simplified setting of Gaussian cMERA for free QFTs, where explicit calculations can be performed. For relativistic free massless bo…
A recursion technique for the renormalization of semiclassical expansions for the Regge trajectories of bound states of the Schrödinger equation is developed. As an application of the proposed technique, the two-parameter renormalization scheme of the Regge trajectories for the bound states in the Martin potential is considered.
We demonstrate, in the context of quadratic fermion lattice models in one and two spatial dimensions, the potential of entanglement renormalization (ER) to define a proper real-space renormalization group transformation. Our results show, for the first time, the validity of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) to describe ground states in two dimensions, even at a quantum critical point. They also unveil a connection between the performance of ER and the logarithmic violations of the boundary law for entanglement in systems with a one-dimensional Fermi surface. ER is reca…
We study entanglement renormalization group transformations for the ground states of a spin model, called cubic code model $H_A$ in three dimensions, in order to understand long-range entanglement structure. The cubic code model has degenerate and locally indistinguishable ground states under periodic boundary conditions. In the entanglement renormalization, one applies local unitary transformations on a state, called disentangling transformations, after which some of the spins are completely disentangled from the rest and then discarded. We find a disentangling unitary to establish equivalenc…
We describe an iterative method to optimize the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) for the low-energy subspace of local Hamiltonians on a D-dimensional lattice. For translation invariant systems the cost of this optimization is logarithmic in the linear system size. Specialized algorithms for the treatment of infinite systems are also described. Benchmark simulation results are presented for a variety of 1D systems, namely Ising, Potts, XX and Heisenberg models. The potential to compute expected values of local observables, energy gaps and correlators is investigated.
The ability of entanglement renormalization (ER) to generate a proper real-space renormalization group (RG) flow in extended quantum systems is analysed in the setting of harmonic lattice systems in D=1 and D=2 spatial dimensions. A conceptual overview of the steps involved in momentum-space RG is provided and contrasted against the equivalent steps in the real-space setting. The real-space RG flow, as generated by ER, is compared against the exact results from momentum-space RG, including an investigation of a critical fixed point and the effect of relevant and irrelevant perturbations.
We elaborate on our earlier proposal connecting entanglement renormalization and holographic duality in which we argued that a tensor network can be reinterpreted as a kind of skeleton for an emergent holographic space. Here we address the question of the large $N$ limit where on the holographic side the gravity theory becomes classical and a non-fluctuating smooth spacetime description emerges. We show how a number of features of holographic duality in the large $N$ limit emerge naturally from entanglement renormalization, including a classical spacetime generated by entanglement, a sparse sp…
The goal of this manuscript is to provide an introduction to the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and its application to the study of quantum critical systems. Only systems in one spatial dimension are considered. The MERA, in its scale-invariant form, is seen to offer direct numerical access to the scale-invariant operators of a critical theory. As a result, given a critical Hamiltonian on the lattice, the scale-invariant MERA can be used to characterize the underlying conformal field theory. The performance of the MERA is benchmarked for several critical quantum spin ch…
We provide an explicit connection between the differential generation of entanglement entropy in a tensor network representation of the ground states of two field theories, and a geometric description of these states based on the Fisher information metric. We show how the geometrical description remains invariant despite there is an irreducible gauge freedom in the definition of the tensor network. The results might help to understand how spacetimes may emerge from distributions of quantum states, or more concretely, from the structure of the quantum entanglement concomitant to those distribut…
Monte Carlo sampling techniques have been proposed as a strategy to reduce the computational cost of contractions in tensor network approaches to solving many-body systems. Here we put forward a variational Monte Carlo approach for the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), which is a unitary tensor network. Two major adjustments are required compared to previous proposals with non-unitary tensor networks. First, instead of sampling over configurations of the original lattice, made of L sites, we sample over configurations of an effective lattice, which is made of just log(L) …
It is well known that the matrix product state (MPS) description of a gapped ground state with a global on-site symmetry can exhibit "symmetry fractionalization". Namely, even though the symmetry acts as a linear representation on the physical degrees of freedom, the MPS matrices---which act on some virtual degrees of freedom---can transform under a projective representation. This was instrumental in classifying gapped symmetry protected phases that manifest in one dimensional quantum many-body systems. Here we consider the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) description of …
We investigate the role of entanglement in quantum phase transitions, and show that the success of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in understanding such phase transitions is due to the way it preserves entanglement under renormalization. We provide a reinterpretation of the DMRG in terms of the language and tools of quantum information science which allows us to rederive the DMRG in a physically transparent way. Motivated by our reinterpretation we suggest a modification of the DMRG which manifestly takes account of the entanglement in a quantum system. This modified renormaliz…
In this work we provide additional support for the proposed connection between the gauge/gravity dualities in string theory and the successful Multi-Scale-Entanglement-Renormalization-anstaz (MERA) method developed for the efficient simulation of quantum many body systems at criticality. This support comes by showing an explicit formal equivalence between the real space renormalization group (RG) flow of the two point correlation functions in different types of MERA states and the holographic RG flow of these correlation functions in asymptotically Anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. These observ…
It is shown how to construct renormalization group flows of quantum field theories in real space, as opposed to the usual Wilsonian approach in momentum space. This is achieved by generalizing the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz to continuum theories. The variational class of wavefunctions arising from this RG flow are translation invariant and exhibit an entropy-area law. We illustrate the construction for a free non-relativistic boson model, and argue that the full power of the construction should emerge in the case of interacting theories.
We introduce the spectrum bifurcation renormalization group (SBRG) as a generalization of the real-space renormalization group for the many-body localized (MBL) system without truncating the Hilbert space. Starting from a disordered many-body Hamiltonian in the full MBL phase, the SBRG flows to the MBL fixed-point Hamiltonian, and generates the local conserved quantities and the matrix product state representations for all eigenstates. The method is applicable to both spin and fermion models with arbitrary interaction strength on any lattice in all dimensions, as long as the models are in the …
We investigate the quantum phase transitions of spin systems in one and two dimensions by employing trace distance and multipartite entanglement along with real-space quantum renormalization group method. As illustration examples, a one-dimensional and a two-dimensional $XY$ models are considered. It is shown that the quantum phase transitions of these spin-chain systems can be revealed by the singular behaviors of the first derivatives of renormalized trace distance and multipartite entanglement in the thermodynamics limit. Moreover, we find the renormalized trace distance and multipartite en…
Two gapped quantum ground states in the same phase are connected by an adiabatic evolution which gives rise to a local unitary transformation that maps between the states. On the other hand, gapped ground states remain within the same phase under local unitary transformations. Therefore, local unitary transformations define an equivalence relation and the equivalence classes are the universality classes that define the different phases for gapped quantum systems. Since local unitary transformations can remove local entanglement, the above equivalence/universality classes correspond to pattern …
The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz is applied to the study of boundary critical phenomena. We compute averages of local operators as a function of the distance from the boundary and the surface contribution to the ground state energy. Furthermore, assuming a uniform tensor structure, we show that the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz implies an exact relation between bulk and boundary critical exponents known to exist for boundary critical systems.
We study 't Hooft anomalies of discrete groups in the framework of (1+1)-dimensional multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz states on the lattice. Using matrix product operators, general topological restrictions on conformal data are derived. An ansatz class allowing for optimization of MERA with an anomalous symmetry is introduced. We utilize this class to numerically study a family of Hamiltonians with a symmetric critical line. Conformal data is obtained for all irreducible projective representations of each anomalous symmetry twist, corresponding to definite topological sectors. It…
We study a conjectured connection between the AdS/CFT and a real-space quantum renormalization group scheme, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). By making a close contact with the holographic formula of the entanglement entropy, we propose a general definition of the metric in the MERA in the extra holographic direction, which is formulated purely in terms of quantum field theoretical data. Using the continuum version of the MERA (cMERA), we calculate this emergent holographic metric explicitly for free scalar boson and free fermions theories, and check that the metric …
We show that the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) can be reformulated in terms of a causality constraint on discrete quantum dynamics. This causal structure is that of de Sitter space with a flat spacelike boundary, where the volume of a spacetime region corresponds to the number of variational parameters it contains. This result clarifies the nature of the ansatz, and suggests a generalization to quantum field theory. It also constitutes an independent justification of the connection between MERA and hyperbolic geometry which was proposed as a concrete implementation of t…
A general method to build the entanglement renormalization (cMERA) for interacting quantum field theories is presented. We improve upon the well-known Gaussian formalism used in free theories through a class of variational non-Gaussian wavefunctionals for which expectation values of local operators can be efficiently calculated analytically and in a closed form. The method consists of a series of scale-dependent nonlinear canonical transformations on the fields of the theory under consideration. Here, the $λ\, ϕ^4$ and the sine-Gordon scalar theories are used to illustrate how non-perturbative…
We consider quantum states under the renormalization-group (RG) transformations introduced by Verstraete et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 140601 (2005)] and propose a quantification of entanglement under such RG (via the geometric measure of entanglement). We examine the resulting entanglement under RG for the ground states of "matrix-product-state" (MPS) Hamiltonians constructed by Wolf et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 110403 (2006)] that possess quantum phase transitions. We find that near critical points, the ground-state entanglement exhibits singular behavior. The singular behavior within finite …
We study the information content of the reduced density matrix of a region in quantum field theory that cannot be recovered from its subregion density matrices. We reconstruct the density matrix from its subregions using two approaches: scaling maps and recovery maps. The vacuum of a scale-invariant field theory is the fixed point of both transformations. We define the entanglement of scaling and the entanglement of recovery as measures of entanglement that are intrinsic to the continuum limit. Both measures increase monotonically under the renormalization group flow. This provides a unifying …
Many simulation tasks require that one first prepare a system's Gibbs state. We present a family of quantum circuits for variational preparation of thermal Gibbs states on a quantum computer; we call them the thermal multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (TMERA). TMERA circuits transform input qubits to wavepacket modes localized to varying length scales and approximate a systems Gibbs state as a mixed state of these modes. The TMERA is a based on the deep multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (DMERA); a TMERA modifies a ground-state DMERA circuit by preparing each input qu…
We have applied our recent approach (Kargarian, et.al Phys. Rev. A 76, 60304 (R) (2007)) to study the quantum information properties of the anisotropic s=1/2 Heisenberg chain. We have investigated the underlying quantum information properties like the evolution of concurrence, entanglement entropy, nonanalytic behaviours and the scaling close to the quantum critical point of the model. Both the concurrence and the entanglement entropy develop two saturated values after enough iterations of the renormalization of coupling constants. This values are associated with the two different phases, i.e …
We have combined the idea of renormalization group and quantum information theory. We have shown how the entanglement or concurrence evolve as the size of the system being large, i.e. the finite size scaling is obtained. Moreover, It introduces how the renormalization group approach can be implemented to obtain the quantum information properties of a many body system. We have obtained the concurrence as a measure of entanglement, its derivatives and their scaling behavior versus the size of system for the one dimensional Ising model in transverse field. We have found that the derivative of con…
We propose a symmetric version of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization Ansatz (MERA) in two spatial dimensions (2D) and use this Ansatz to find an unknown ground state of a 2D quantum system. Results in the simple 2D quantum Ising model on the $8\times8$ square lattice are found to be very accurate even with the smallest non-trivial truncation parameter.
Entanglement renormalization is a method for coarse-graining a quantum state in real space, with the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) as a notable example. We obtain an entanglement renormalization scheme for finite-temperature (Gibbs) states by applying MERA to their canonical purification, the thermofield double state. As an example, we find an analytically exact renormalization circuit for finite temperature two-dimensional toric code which maps it to a coarse-grained system with a renormalized higher temperature, thus explicitly demonstrating its lack of topological o…
We adapt the techniques of entanglement renormalization tensor networks to weakly interacting quantum field theories in the continuum. A key tool is "quantum circuit perturbation theory," which enables us to systematically construct unitaries that map between wavefunctionals which are Gaussian with arbitrary perturbative corrections. As an application, we construct a local, continuous MERA (cMERA) circuit that maps an unentangled scale-invariant state to the ground state of $φ^4$ theory to 1-loop. Our local cMERA circuit corresponds exactly to 1-loop Wilsonian RG on the spatial momentum modes.…
The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) postulates the existence of quantum circuits that renormalize entanglement in real space at different length scales. Chern insulators, however, cannot have scale-invariant discrete MERA circuits with finite bond dimension. In this Letter, we show that the continuous MERA (cMERA), a modified version of MERA adapted for field theories, possesses a fixed point wavefunction with nonzero Chern number. Additionally, it is well known that reversed MERA circuits can be used to prepare quantum states efficiently in time that scales logarithmica…
Real-space renormalization approaches for quantum lattice systems generate certain hierarchical classes of states that are subsumed by the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA). It is shown that, with the exception of one spatial dimension, MERA states are actually finitely correlated states, i.e., projected entangled pair states (PEPS) with a bond dimension independent of the system size. Hence, real-space renormalization generates states which can be encoded with local effective degrees of freedom, and MERA states form an efficiently contractible class of PEPS that obey the …
Quantum entanglement entropy has a geometric character. This is illustrated by the interpretation of Rindler space or black hole entropy as entanglement entropy. In general, one can define a "geometric entropy", associated with an event horizon as a boundary that concentrates a large number of quantum states. This allows one to connect with the "density matrix renormalization group" and to unveil its connection with the theory of quantum information. This renormalization group has been introduced in condensed matter physics in a heuristic manner, but it can be conceived as a method of compress…
The continuous Multiscale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (cMERA) [Haegeman et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 100402 (2013)] gives a variational wavefunctional for ground states of quantum field theoretic Hamiltonians. A cMERA is defined as the result of applying to a reference unentangled state a unitary evolution generated by a quasilocal operator, the entangler. This makes the extension of the formalism to the case where boundaries and defects are present nontrivial. Here we show how this generalization works, using the 1+1d free boson cMERA as a proof-of-principle example, and restricting …
Traditional mean-field theory is a simple generic approach for understanding various phases. But that approach only applies to symmetry breaking states with short-range entanglement. In this paper, we describe a generic approach for studying 2D quantum phases with long-range entanglement (such as topological phases). Our approach is a variational method that uses tensor product states (also known as projected entangled pair states) as trial wave functions. We use a 2D real space RG algorithm to evaluate expectation values in these wave functions. We demonstrate our algorithm by studying severa…
The continuous multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (cMERA) is a variational class of states for quantum fields. As originally formulated, the cMERA applies to infinite systems only. In this paper we generalize the cMERA formalism to a finite circle, which we achieve by wrapping the action of the so-called entangler around the circle. This allows us to transform a cMERA on the line into a cMERA on the circle. In addition, in the case of a Gaussian cMERA for non-interacting quantum fields, the method of images allow us to prove the following result: if on the line a cMERA state is a …
We propose a new implementation of real-space renormalization group (RG) transformations for quantum states on a lattice. Key to this approach is the removal of short-ranged entanglement, similar to Vidal's entanglement renormalization (ER), which allows a proper RG flow to be achieved. However, our proposal only uses operators that act locally within each block, such that the use of disentanglers acting across block boundaries is not required. By avoiding the use of disentanglers we argue many tensor network algorithms for studying quantum many-body systems can be significantly improved. The …
We present a renormalization scheme which simplifies the dynamics of an important class of interacting multi-qubit systems. We show that a wide class of M+1 qubit systems can be reduced to an equivalent n+1 qubit system with n equal to, or greater than, 2, for any M. Our renormalization scheme faithfully reproduces the overall dynamics of the original system including the entanglement properties. In addition to its direct application to atom-cavity and nanostructure systems, the formalism offers insight into a variety of situations ranging from decoherence due to a spin-bath with its own inter…
