We present a toy model for extending the Friedmann equations of relativistic cosmology using fractional derivatives. We do this by replacing the integer derivatives, in a few well-known cosmological results with fractional derivatives leaving their order as a free parameter. All this with the intention to explain the current observed acceleration of the Universe. We apply the Last Step Modification technique of fractional calculus to construct some useful fractional equations of cosmology. The fits of the unknown fractional derivative order and the fractional cosmographic parameters to SN Ia data shows that this simple construction can explain the current accelerated expansion of the Universe without the use of a dark energy component with a MOND-like behaviour using Milgrom's acceleration constant which sheds light into to the non-necessity of a dark matter component as well.
For a 4-dimensional spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a scalar field $ϕ(x)$, potential $V(ϕ)$ and constant equation of state $w=p/ρ$, we show that an expanding solution characterized by $ε=3(1+w)/2$ produces the same scalar perturbations as a contracting solution with $\hatε=1/ε$. The same symmetry applies to both the dominant and subdominant scalar perturbation modes. This result admits a simple physical interpretation and generalizes to $d$ spacetime dimensions if we define $ε\equiv [(2d-5)+(d-1)w]/(d-2)$.
We study the scalar curvature of spacelike hypersurfaces in the family of cosmological models known as generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes, and give several rigidity results under appropriate mathematical and physical assumptions. On the other hand, we show that this family of spacetimes provides suitable models obeying the null convergence condition to explain accelerated expanding universes.
We explore the possibility that traversable wormholes be supported by specific equations of state responsible for the present accelerated expansion of the Universe, namely, phantom energy, the generalized Chaplygin gas, and the van der Waals quintessence equation of state.
We examine the nonlinear dynamics of a closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe in the framework of Brane World formalism with a timelike extra dimension. In this scenario, the Friedmann equations contain additional terms arising from the bulk-brane interaction which provide a concrete model for nonsingular bounces in the early phase of the Universe. We construct a nonsingular cosmological scenario sourced with dust, radiation and a cosmological constant. The structure of the phase space shows a nonsingular orbit with two accelerated phases, separated by a smooth transition corresponding to …
Gravitational field equations in Randers-Finsler space of approximate Berwald type are investigated. A modified Friedmann model is proposed. It is showed that the accelerated expanding universe is guaranteed by a constrained Randers-Finsler structure without invoking dark energy. The geodesic in Randers-Finsler space is studied. The additional term in the geodesic equation acts as repulsive force against the gravity.
In this report, we discuss the behavior of coordinate-time dependent lapse function of FLRW metric of an accelerated expanding universe in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity theory. We find for the conventional dRGT formalism the corresponding lapse function can exhibit unphysical behaviors in the associated parameter space with a negative cosmological-constant-like term that leads to the decelerated universe model. To solve this problem, we introduce the so-called cosmological background density parameter to the perfect fluid stress-energy tensor which induces negative pressure. It …
The Renyi entropy coprises a group of data estimates that sums up the well-known Shannon entropy, acquiring a considerable lot of its properties. It appears as unqualified and restrictive entropy, relative entropy, or common data, and has found numerous applications in information theory. in the Renyi's argument, the area law of the black hole entropy plays a significant role. However, the total entropy can be modified by some quantum effects, motivated by the randomness of a system. In this note, by employing this modified entropy relation, we have derived corrections to Newton's law of gravi…
We present the numerical evolution of a family of conformally-flat, infinite, expanding cubic black-hole lattices. We solve for the initial data using an initial-data prescription presented recently, along with a new multigrid solver developed for this purpose. We then apply the standard tools of numerical relativity to calculate the time development of this initial dataset and derive quantities of cosmological relevance, such as the scaling of proper lengths. Similarly to the case of S3 lattices, we find that the length scaling remains close to the analytical solution for Friedmann-Lemaitre-R…
We consider a simplified model of quantum gravity using a mini-superspace description of an isotropic and homogeneous universe with dust. We derive the corresponding Friedmann equations for the scale factor, which now contain a dependence on the wave function. We identify wave functions for which the quantum effects lead to a period of accelerated expansion that is in agreement with the apparent evolution of our universe, without introducing a cosmological constant.
The main purpose of this paper is to explicitly verify the consistency of the energy-momentum and angular momentum tensor of the gravitational field established in the Hamiltonian structure of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR). In order to reach these objectives, we obtained the total energy and angular momentum (matter plus gravitational field) of the closed universe of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW). The result is compared with those obtained from the pseudotensors of Einstein and Landau-Lifshitz. We also applied the field equations (TEGR) in an expandi…
We study the expansion of the Universe using an effective Friedmann equation obtained from the dynamics of GFT (Group Field Theory) isotropic condensates. The evolution equations are classical, with quantum correction terms to the Friedmann equation given in the form of effective fluids coupled to the emergent classical background. The occurrence of a bounce, which resolves the initial spacetime singularity, is shown to be a general property of the model. A promising feature of this model is the occurrence of an era of accelerated expansion, without the need to introduce an inflaton field with…
A new approach has been used to evaluate the momentum and angular momentum of the isotropic and homogeneous cosmological models. It is shown that the results obtained for momentum exactly coincide with those already available in the literature. However, the angular momentum expression coincides only for the closed Friedmann model.
The problem of particle creation in cosmology concerning whether the results for the number of particles are infinite or finite is discussed for scalar and spinor particles in Friedmann expanding Universe. It is shown that the results are always finite if one puts in case of scalar particles creation a special term into the Lagrangian. Numerical estimates of the effect of particle creation are made. The role of creation of superheavy particles in cosmology is discussed.
I set out the 2PI formalism for quantum fields in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe. I show how one can solve self-consistently for the quantum field evolution and the evolution of the cosmological scale factor, using a renormalised semi-classical Friedmann equation. In a 2PI coupling expansion truncated at O(lambda^2), I perform sample calculations demonstrating kinetic and chemical equilibration in this context.
Relations between the Friedmann observables of the expanding Universe and the Dirac observables in the generalized Hamiltonian approach are established for the Friedmann cosmological model of the Universe with the field excitations imitating radiation. A full separation of the physical sector from the gauge one is fulfilled by the method of the gaugeless reduction in which the gravitational part of the energy constraint is considered as a new momentum. We show that this reduction removes an infinite factor from the Hartle -- Hawking functional integral, provides the normalizability of the Whee…
Within a large class of exact solutions of the Einstein equations describing a black hole embedded in a Friedmann universe it is shown that, under certain assumptions, only those with comoving Hawking-Hayward quasi-local mass are generic, in the sense that they are late-time attractors.
We investigate the laws of thermodynamics in an accelerating universe driven by dark energy with a time-dependent equation of state. In the case we consider that the physically relevant part of the Universe is that envelopped by the dynamical apparent horizon, we have shown that both the first law and second law of thermodynamics are satisfied. On the other hand, if the boundary of the Universe is considered to be the cosmological event horizon the thermodynamical description based on the definitions of boundary entropy and temperature breaks down. No parameter redefinition can rescue the ther…
In a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with zero spatial curvature, we consider the interaction of the gravitational waves with the plasma in the presence of a weak magnetic field. Using the relativistic hydromagnetic equations it is verified that large amplitude magnetosonic waves are excited, assuming that both, the gravitational field and the weak magnetic field do not break the homogeneity and isotropy of the considered FRW spacetime.
The solution of the problem of describing the Friedmann observables (the Hubble law, the red shift, etc.) in quantum cosmology is proposed on the basis of the method of gaugeless Hamiltonian reduction in which the gravitational part of the energy constraint is considered as a new momentum. We show that the conjugate variable corresponding to the new momentum plays a role of the invariant time parameter of evolution of dynamical variables in the sector of the Dirac observables of the general Hamiltonian approach. Relations between these Dirac observables and the Friedmann observables of the exp…
In this paper, evolution of the high energy area of universe, through the scenario of 5 dimensional (5D) universe, has been studied. For this purpose, we solve Einstein equations for 5D metric and 5D perfect fuid to derive Friedmann-like equations. Then we obtain the evolution of scale factor and energy density with respect to both space-like and time-like extra dimensions. We obtain the novel equations for the space-like extra dimension and show that the matter with zero pressure cannot exist in the bulk. Also, for dark energy fuid and vacuum fluid, we have both accelerated expansion and cont…
The mathematical concept of the Newtonian limit of Einstein's field equations in the expanding Friedmann universe is formulated. The geodesic equations of motion of planets and light are derived and compared.
In the context of dark energy solutions, we consider a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime filled with a non-interacting mixture of dust and a viscous fluid, whose bulk viscosity is governed by the nonlinear model proposed in [15]. Through a phase space analysis of the equivalent dynamical system, existence and stability of critical solutions are established and the respective scale factors are computed. The results point towards the possibility of describing the current accelerated expansion of the Universe by means of the abovementioned nonlinear model for viscosity.
The lack of energy conservation introduces new particle processes in curved spacetime that are forbidden in flat space. Therefore one has to be very cautious about using the results calculated in Minkowskian space in early universe applications. This is true for particle decay rates in particular, which need to be calculated using quantum field theory in curved spacetime. Previous studies are usually restricted to using minimal or conformal coupling for the decaying particle, while using a more general coupling would give deeper insight into particle decay. This paper presents the results we o…
Exactly one hundred years ago, in May 1922, Alexander Friedmann discovered that General Relativity (GR) predicts non-stationary Universe. His equation describing the evolution of the Universe is now named after him. In this paper we briefly recall the human and scientific aspects of this revolutionary change in our picture of the world. We also recall that immediately after finishing his seminal paper Friedmann wrote a book on GR for a wide audience. In that book he presented an impressive picture of the expanding Universe created from nothing.
We want to find the cosmological constant influence on cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature due to moving linear cosmic strings. Considering the space-time metric of a linear cosmic string in an accelerated expanding universe, the Gott-Kaiser-Stebbins (GKS) effect, as an important mechanism in producing temperature discontinuity in the CMB, is considered and its modification due to the effect of the cosmological constant is calculated. The result shows that a positive cosmological constant (i.e. the presence of cosmic strings in an accelerated expanding universe) weakens the discontin…
We present semi-analytical solutions to the background equations describing the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) metric as well as the homogeneous Friedmann equations, in the presence of dust, curvature and a cosmological constant Lambda. For none of the presented solutions any numerical integration has to be performed. All presented solutions are given for expanding and collapsing phases, preserving continuity in time and radius. Hence, these solutions describe the complete space time of a collapsing spherical object in an expanding universe. In the appendix we present for completeness a solution …
Electrodynamics for self-interacting scalar fields in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times is studied. The corresponding one-loop field equation for the expectation value of the complex scalar field in the conformal vacuum is derived. For exponentially expanding universes, the equations for the Bogoliubov coefficients describing the coupling of the scalar field to gravity are solved numerically. They yield a non-local correction to the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential which does not modify the pattern of minima found in static de Sitter space. Such a correction contains a …
In this paper we continue the study of the physical consequences of our modified black hole entropy formula in expanding spacetimes. In particular, we apply the new formula to apparent horizons of Friedmann expanding universes with zero, negative and positive spatial curvature. As a first result, we found that, apart from the static Einstein solution, the only Friedmann spacetimes with constant (zero) internal energy are the ones with zero spatial curvature. This happens because, in the computation of the internal energy $U$, the contribution due to the non-vanishing Hubble flow must been adde…
In this work we explore a Holographic Dark Energy Model in a flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker Universe, which contains baryons, radiation, cold dark matter and dark energy within the framework of General Relativity. Furthermore, we consider three types of phenomenological interactions in the dark sector. With the proposed model we obtained the algebraic expressions for the cosmological parameters of our interest: the deceleration and coincidence parameters. Likewise, we graphically compare the proposed model with the $Λ$CDM model.
Motivated by recent results on non-vanishing spatial curvature \cite{curve} we employ the holographic model of dark energy to investigate the validity of first and second laws of thermodynamics in non-flat (closed) universe enclosed by apparent horizon $R_A$ and the event horizon measured from the sphere of horizon named $L$. We show that for the apparent horizon the first law is roughly respected for different epochs while the second laws of thermodynamics is respected while for $L$ as the system's IR cut-off first law is broken down and second law is respected for special range of decelerati…
It is shown that a present acceleration with a past deceleration is a possible solution of the Friedmann equation by considering the Universe as a mixture of a scalar with a matter field and by including a non-equilibrium pressure term in the energy-momentum tensor. The dark energy density decays more slowly with respect to the time than the matter energy density does. The inclusion of the non-equilibrium pressure leads to a less pronounced decay of the matter field with a shorter period of past deceleration.
The energy-momentum tensor coming from one-parameter effective Yang- Mills theory is here used to describe the matter-energy content of the homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann cosmology in its early stages. The behavior of all solutions is examined. Particularly, it is shown that only solutions corresponding to an open model allow the universe to evolve into an accelerated expansion. This result appears as a possible mechanism for an inflationary phase produced by a vector field. Further, depending on the value of some parameters characterizing the system, the resulting models are classified a…
This paper provides an analytical treatment of accelerated and geodesic motion within the framework of the Friedmann -Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime. By employing conformal time transformations we manage to convert second order differential equations of motion in FLRW spacetime to first order equations in the conformally transformed spacetime. This allows us to derive a general analytical solution in closed-form for accelerated motion in spatially curved FLRW spacetime. We provide few examples of this general solution for the spatially flat cases. The last part of our work focuses …
We study the accelerated expansion of the Universe through its consequences on a congruence of geodesics. We make use of the Raychaudhuri equation which describes the evolution of the expansion rate for a congruence of timelike or null geodesics. In particular, we focus on the space-time geometry contribution to this equation. By straightforward calculation from the metric of a Robertson-Walker cosmological model, it follows that in an accelerated expanding Universe the space-time contribution to the Raychaudhuri equation is positive for the fundamental congruence, favoring a non-focusing of t…
I examine the interpretation of photon redshifts in curved spacetime, as being gravitational or Doppler in origin. In Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime, redshifts between comoving observers are often attributed to "expanding space", whereas in Schwarzschild spacetime, redshifts between static observers are attributed to "gravitational" causes. Yet various authors have suggested a freely falling observer congruence would interpret any redshift as Doppler, whereas a rigid congruence must interpret it as gravitational since there is no relative motion. I realise this proposal by expli…
We study the conditions for the consistency of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) metric with the dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity. It turns out to be that in this situation the accelerated expansion of the Universe takes place, with the time dependence of the scale factor turns out to be similar to the case of presence of the Chaplygin gas. Also we found that this modification changes the total density of the Universe and therefore gives a nontrivial impact to a cosmological scenario.
We analyze the properties of the electric and magnetic fields in different reference frames within a cosmological background space-time. First, we investigate the conformal properties of the electromagnetic fields and charge currents, discussing how the spatial curvature of the universe affects the field on different scales. Then, we analyze the effects of the expansion of the universe on local electromagnetic sources using Fermi coordinates. In particular, we investigate the energy balance and Poynting flux in this locally defined reference frame. We show that a charge following the Hubble fl…
We find exact exponentially expanding and contracting de Sitter solutions of the spatially homogeneous TeVeS cosmological equations of motion in the vacuum TeVeS model and a power law accelerated expanding solution in thepresence of an additional ideal fluid with equation of state parameter $-5/3 < ω< -1$. A preliminary stability analysis shows that the expanding vacuum solution is stable, while in the ideal fluid case stability depends on model parameter values. These solutions might provide a basis for incorporating early-time inflation or late-time accelerated expansion in TeVeS cosmology.
It is well known that interstellar travel is bounded by the finite speed of light, but on very large scales any rocketeer would also need to consider the influence of cosmological expansion on their journey. This paper examines accelerated journeys within the framework of Friedmann- Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universes, illustrating how the duration of a fixed acceleration sharply divides exploration over interstellar and intergalactic distances. Furthermore, we show how the universal expansion increases the difficulty of intergalactic navigation, with small uncertainties in cosmological parame…
We study the existence of black holes in a homogeneous and isotropic expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe dominated by dark energy. We show that black holes can exist in such a universe by considering some specific McVittie solutions. Although these solutions violate all three energy conditions, the FRW background does satisfy the weak energy condition.
The earlier developed algorithm for constructing a self-conjugate Hamiltonian in the η-representation for Dirac particles interacting with a general gravitational field is extended to the case of electromagnetic fields. This Hamiltonian is applied to the case when the gravitational field describes the spatially flat Friedmann model, and the electromagnetic field is the Coulomb potential extended to the case of this model. The analysis of atomic systems and electromagnetic forces of interaction under the conditions of spatially flat expansion of the universe has demonstrated that the system of …
We discuss several aspects of particle production in: (a) time dependent electric field and (b) expanding Friedmann background. In the first part of the paper, we provide an algebraic mapping between the differential equations describing these two phenomena. This mapping allows a direct comparison between (a) and (b) and we highlight several interesting features of both cases using this approach. We determine the form of the (equivalent) electric field corresponding to different Friedmann spacetimes and discover, for example, a time-dependent electric field which, in a specific limit, leads to…
Consider spherically symmetric initial data for a cosmology which, in the large, approximates an open $k = -1 ,Λ= 0$ Friedmann-Lema{\^ı}tre universe. Further assume that the data is chosen so that the trace of the extrinsic curvature is a constant and that the matter field is at rest at this instant of time. One expects that no trapped surfaces appear in the data if no significant clump of excess matter is to be found. This letter confirms this belief by displaying a necessary condition for the existence of trapped surfaces. This necessary condition, simply stated, says that a relatively large …
We have studied the time dependence of w for an expanding universe in the generalised B-D theory and have obtained its explicit dependence on the nature of matter contained in the universe,in different era.Lastly we discuss how the observed accelerated expansion of the present universe can be accomodated in the formalism.
We obtain a scaling relation for spherically symmetric k-essence scalar fields $ϕ(r,t)$ for an inhomogeneous cosmology with the Lemaitre-Tolman- Bondi (LTB) metric. We show that this scaling relation reduces to the known relation for a homogeneous cosmology when the LTB metric reduces to the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric under certain identifications of the metric functions. A k-essence lagrangian is set up and the Euler-Lagrangian equations solved assuming $ϕ(r,t)=ϕ_{1}(r) + ϕ_{2}(t)$. The solutions enable the LBT metric functions to be related to the fields. The LTB inhom…
In this paper, we introduce bulk viscosity in the formalism of modified gravity theory in which the gravitational action contains a general function $f(R,T)$, where $R$ and $T$ denote the curvature scalar and the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, respectively within the framework of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model. As an equation of state for prefect fluid, we take $p=(γ-1)ρ$, where $0 \leq γ\leq 2$ and viscous term as a bulk viscosity due to isotropic model, of the form $ζ=ζ_{0}+ζ_{1}H$, where $ζ_{0}$ and $ζ_{1}$ are constants, and $H$ is the Hubble parameter. The exact non-singula…
The quantized Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) model minimally coupled to a free massless scalar field is studied and interpreted in the Bohm-de Broglie framework. We analyze the quantum bohmian trajectories corresponding to a certain class of gaussian packets, solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We show that these bohmian trajectories undergo an accelerated expansion in the middle of its evolution due to the presence of quantum cosmological effects in this period. It is shown that the luminosity-redshift relation in the quantum cosmological model can be made close to the cor…
We show that generic anisotropic universes arbitrarily close to the open Friedmann universe allow information processing to continue into the infinite future if there is no cosmological constant or stable gravitationally repulsive stress, and the spatial topology is non-compact. An infinite amount of information can be processed by ``civilisations'' who harness the temperature gradients created by gravitational tidal energy. These gradients are driven by the gravitational waves that sustain the expansion shear and three-curvature anisotropy.
We consider Friedmann-like universes with torsion and take a step towards studying their stability. In so doing, we apply dynamical-system techniques to an autonomous system of differential equations, which monitors the evolution of these models via the associated density parameters. Assuming relatively weak torsion, we identify the system's equilibrium points. These are found to represent homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes with nonzero torsion that undergo accelerated expansion. We then examine the linear stability of the aforementioned fixed points. Our results indicate that Friedmann-like…
An attempt is made to explain time non-dilation allegedly observed in quasar light curves. The explanation is based on the assumption that quasar black holes are, in some sense, foreign for our Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe and do not participate in the Hubble flow. Although at first sight such a weird explanation requires unreasonably fine-tuned Big Bang initial conditions, we find a natural justification for it using the Milne cosmological model as an inspiration.
We generalize f(R,T) gravity into the two-scalar theory that includes two independent scalar fields by the variational method, and we derive its field equations in Einstein frame using conformal transformation. Based on Friedmann equations and Raychaudhuri equation, with a consideration of the cosmic content as its perfect-fluid form, a further discussion leads us to an accelerated expanding condition of universe. In the two-scalar theory, universe has two states which are the accelerated expansion and decelerated contraction, and it has three stages during its evolution. The first and third s…
We expose the scenarios of primordial baryon-photon plasma evolution within the framework of the Milne-like universe models. Recently, such models find a second wind and promise an inflation-free solution of a lot of cosmological puzzles including the cosmological constant one. Metric tensor perturbations are considered using the five-vectors theory of gravity admitting the Friedmann equation satisfied up to some constant. The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectrum is calculated qualitatively.
The late time evolution of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) models with a perfect fluid matter source is studied in the conformal frame of $f(R) $ gravity. We assume that the corresponding scalar field, nonminimally coupled to matter, has an arbitrary non-negative potential function $V(ϕ) $. We prove that equilibria corresponding to non-negative local minima for $V$ are asymptotically stable. We investigate all cases where one of the matter components eventually dominates. The results are valid for a large class of non-negative potentials without any particular assumptions about the behavior o…
A Friedmann like cosmological model in Einstein-Cartan framework is studied when the torsion function is assumed to be proportional to a single $ϕ(t)$ function coming just from the spin vector contribution of ordinary matter. By analysing four different types of torsion function written in terms of one, two and three free parameters, we found that a model with $ϕ(t)=- αH(t) \big({ρ_{m}(t)}/{ρ_{0c}}\big)^n$ is totally compatible with recent cosmological data, where $α$ and $n$ are free parameters to be constrained from observations, $ρ_m$ is the matter energy density and $ρ_{0c}$ the critical d…
