In this article we present an efficient algorithm to compute rotation intervals of circle maps of degree one. It is based on the computation of the rotation number of a monotone circle map of degree one with a constant section. The main strength of this algorithm is that it computes \emph{exactly} the rotation interval of a natural subclass of the continuous non-invertible degree one circle maps.
We also compare our algorithm with other existing ones by plotting the Devil's Staircase of a one-parameter family of maps and the Arnold Tongues and rotation intervals of some special non-differentiable families, most of which were out of the reach of the existing algorithms that were centred around differentiable maps.
In this paper we prove the $C^1$-density of every $C^r$-conjugacy class in the closed subset of diffeomorphisms of the circle with a given irrational rotation number.
Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that various subspaces are $C^\infty$-dense in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of the circle with rotation number $α$.
We extend some aspects of the smooth approximation by conjugation method to the real-analytic set-up and create examples of zero entropy, uniquely ergodic real-analytic diffeomorphisms of the two dimensional torus metrically isomorphic to some (Liouvillian) irrational rotations of the circle.
We prove that if two analytic multicritical circle maps with the same bounded type rotation number are topologically conjugate by a conjugacy which matches the critical points of the two maps while preserving the orders of their criticalities, then the conjugacy necessarily has $C^{1+α}$ regularity, where $α$ depends only on the bound on the type of the rotation number. We then extend this rigidity result to $C^3$-smooth bi-cubic circle maps.
We study the dynamics of iteration function systems generated by a pair of circle diffeomorphisms close to rotations in the $C^{1+\mathrm{bv}}$-topology. We characterize the obstruction to minimality and describe the limit set. In particular, there are no invariant minimal Cantor sets, which can be seen as a Denjoy/Duminy type theorem for iterated systems on the circle.
We show that no C^2 circle diffeomorphism of irrational rotation number has invariant 1-distributions other than (scalar multiples of) the invariant measure. We also show that this is false in the C^1 context by giving both minimal and non-minimal examples.
We consider the rotation number $ρ(t)$ of a diffeomorphism $f_t=R_t\circ f$, where $R_t$ is the rotation by $t$ and $f$ is an orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphism of the circle $S^1$. We shall show that if $ρ(t)$ is irrational $$\limsup_{t'\to t}(ρ(t')-ρ(t))/(t'-t)\geq 1.$$
We describe the relation between the dynamical properties of a quasiperiodically forced orientation-preserving circle homeomorphism and the behavior of the fibered rotation number with respect to strictly monotone perturbations. Despite the fact that the dynamics in the forced case can be considerably more complicated, the result we obtain is in perfect analogy with the one-dimensional situation. In particular, the fibered rotation number behaves strictly monotonically whenever the rotation vector is irrational. This answers a question posed by Herman (1983, Comm. Math. Helv.).
We revisit the problem of well-defining rotation numbers for discrete random dynamical systems on the circle. We show that, contrasting with deterministic systems, the topological (i.e. based on Poincaré lifts) approach does depend on the choice of lifts (e.g. continuously for nonatomic randomness). Furthermore, the winding orbit rotation number does not agree with the topological rotation number. Existence and conversion formulae between these distinct numbers are presented. Finally, we prove a sampling in time theorem which recover the rotation number of continuous Stratonovich stochastic dy…
We prove quantitative statistical stability results for a large class of small $C^{0}$ perturbations of circle diffeomorphisms with irrational rotation numbers. We show that if the rotation number is Diophantine the invariant measure varies in a Hölder way under perturbation of the map and the Hölder exponent depends on the Diophantine type of the rotation number. The set of admissable perturbations includes the ones coming from spatial discretization and hence numerical truncation. We also show linear response for smooth perturbations that preserve the rotation number, as well as for more gen…
We show that if $f \colon S^1 \times S^1 \to S^1 \times S^1$ is $C^2$, with $f(x, t) = (f_t(x), t)$, and the rotation number of $f_t$ is equal to $t$ for all $t \in S^1$, then $f$ is topologically conjugate to the linear Dehn twist of the torus $(1&1 0&1)$. We prove a differentiability result where the assumption that the rotation number of $f_t$ is $t$ is weakened to say that the rotation number is strictly monotone in $t$.
We show that a generic quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphism is mode-locked: the rotation number in the fibres is rationally related to the rotation number in the base and it is stable under small perturbations of the system. As a consequence, this implies that for a generic parameter family of quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms satisfying a twist condition, the graph of the rotation number as a function of the parameter is a devil's staircase.
In this paper, we study rotation numbers of random dynamical systems on the circle. We prove the existence of rotation numbers and the continuous dependence of rotation numbers on the systems. As an application, we prove a theorem on analytic conjugacy to a circle rotation.
We prove that an analytic quasiperiodically forced circle flow with a not super-Liouvillean base frequency and which is close enough to some constant rotation is $C^{\infty}$ rotations reducible, provided its fibered rotation number is Diophantine with respect to the base frequency. As a corollary, we obtain that among such systems, the linearizable ones and those displaying mode-locking are locally dense for the $C^\infty$-topology.
This paper is concerned about the orbit equivalence types of $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms of $S^1$ seen as nonsingular automorphisms of $(S^1,m)$, where $m$ is the Lebesgue measure. Given any Liouville number $α$, it is shown that each of the subspace formed by type ${\rm II}_1$, ${\rm II}_\infty$, ${\rm III}_λ$ ($λ>1$), ${\rm III}_\infty$ and ${\rm III}_0$ diffeomorphisms are $C^\infty$-dense in the space of the orientation preserving $C^\infty$ diffeomorphisms with rotation number $α$.
We prove that any two $C^4$ critical circle maps with the same irrational rotation number and the same odd criticality are conjugate to each other by a $C^1$ circle diffeomorphism. The conjugacy is $C^{1+α}$ for Lebesgue almost every rotation number.
We study recurrence and non-recurrence sets for dynamical systems on compact spaces, in particular for products of rotations on the unit circle T. A set of integers is called r-Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of r rotations on T, and Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of rotations on T. It is a result due to Katznelson that for each r there exist sets of integers which are r-Bohr but not (r+1)-Bohr. We present new examples of r-Bohr sets which are not Bohr, thanks to a construction which is both flexible and completely explicit. Our results are related to an old combinatorial pr…
We consider skew product extension of irrational rotations on the circle by $\Z^2$ determined by an integer valued function as well as a fixed point on the circle. We study ergodic components of such extension.
We examine the itinerary of $0\in S^{1}=\R/\Z$ under the rotation by $α\in\R\bs\Q$. The motivating question is: if we are given only the itinerary of 0 relative to $I\subset S^{1}$, a finite union of closed intervals, can we recover $α$ and $I$? We prove that the itineraries do determine $α$ and $I$ up to certain equivalences. Then we present elementary methods for finding $α$ and $I$. Moreover, if $g:S^{1}\to S^{1}$ is a $C^{2}$, orientation preserving diffeomorphism with an irrational rotation number, then we can use the orbit itinerary to recover the rotation number up to certain equivalenc…
We prove that if d is an integer number bigger than 1 and f_1,...,f_d are commuting circle diffeomorphisms respectively of class C^(1+τ_k), where τ_1 + ... + τ_k > 1, then these maps are simultaneously conjugate to rotations provided that their rotation numbers are independent over the rationals.
Inspired by a twist maps theorem of Mather we study recurrent invariant sets that are ordered like rigid rotation under the action of the lift of a bimodal circle map $g$ to the $k$-fold cover. For each irrational in the interior of the rotation set the collection of the $k$-fold ordered semi-Denjoy minimal sets with that rotation number contains a $(k-1)$-dimensional ball in the weak topology on their unique invariant measures. We also describe completely their periodic orbit analogs for rational rotation numbers. The main tool is a generalization of a construction of Hedlund and Morse which …
We are concerned with describing the structure of the set of points in the unit interval which, when subjected to rotation by irrational alpha modulo one, for all finite portions of the orbit contain at least as many points in the bottom half of the interval as in the top half. Specifically, an inductive procedure for describing the set based on the continued fraction expansion of alpha is developed, leading into a discussion of the Hausdorff dimension of this set. Depending on the parameter alpha, all possible dimensions may be achieved, and the essential infimum (with respect to alpha) of th…
In this paper, we study multi-rotation orbits on the unit circle. We obtain a natural generalization of a classical result which says that orbits of irrational rotations on the unit circle are dense. It is possible to show that this result holds true if instead of iterating a single irrational rotation, one takes a multi-rotation orbit along a finitely recurrent sequence over finitely many different irrational rotations. We also discuss some connections between the box dimensions of multi-rotation orbits and Diophantine approximations. In particular, we improve a result by Feng and Xiong in th…
We consider pointwise, box, and Hausdorff dimensions of invariant measures for circle diffeomorphisms. We discuss the cases of rational, Diophantine, and Liouville rotation numbers. Our main result is that for any Liouville number $τ$ there exists a $C^\infty$ circle diffeomorphism with rotation number $τ$ such that the pointwise and box dimensions of its unique invariant measure do not exist. Moreover, the lower pointwise and lower box dimensions can equal any value $0\le β\le 1$.
We prove that two $C^r$ critical circle maps with the same rotation number of bounded type are $C^{1+α}$ conjugate for some $α>0$ provided their successive renormalizations converge together at an exponential rate in the $C^0$ sense. The number $α$ depends only on the rate of convergence. We also give examples of $C^\infty$ critical circle maps with the same rotation number that are not $C^{1+β}$ conjugate for any $β>0$.
We construct a sequence of generating functions $(h_n)_{n\in\N}$, arbitrarily close to an integrable system in the $C^r$ topology with $r<4$ for $n$ large enough. With the variational method, we prove that for a given rotation number $ω$ and $n$ large enough, the exact monotone area-preserving twist maps generated by $(h_n)_{n\in\N}$ admit no invariant circles with rotation number $ω$.
We give conditions that characterize the existence of an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure for a degree one $C^2$ endomorphism of the circle which is bimodal, such that all its periodic orbits are repelling, and such that both boundaries of its rotation interval are irrational numbers. Those conditions are satisfied when the boundary points of the rotation interval belong to a Diophantine class. In particular they hold for Lebesgue almost every rotation interval. The measure obtained is a global physical measure, and it is hyperbolic.
Rotational invariant circles of area-preserving maps are an important and well-studied example of KAM tori. John Greene conjectured that the locally most robust rotational circles have rotation numbers that are noble, i.e., have continued fractions with a tail of ones, and that, of these circles, the most robust has golden mean rotation number. The accurate numerical confirmation of these conjectures relies on the map having a time reversal symmetry, and these methods cannot be applied to more general maps. In this paper, we develop a method based on a weighted Birkhoff average for identifying…
In this paper we present a generalization of Poincaré's Rotation Theory of homeomorphisms of the circle to the case of one-dimensional compact abelian groups which are solenoidal groups, {\it i.e.}, groups which fiber over the circle with fiber a Cantor abelian group. We define rotation elements, \emph{à la} Poincaré and discuss the dynamical properties of translations on these solenoidal groups. We also study the semiconjugation problem when the rotation element generates a dense subgroup of the solenoidal group. Finally, we comment on the relation between Rotation Theory and entropy for thes…
Monotone lattice recurrence relations such as the Frenkel-Kontorova lattice, arise in Hamiltonian lattice mechanics as models for fe?rromagnetism and as discretization of elliptic PDEs. Mathematically, they are a multidimensional counterpart of monotone twist maps. They often admit a variational structure, so that the solutions are the stationary points of a formal action function. Classical Aubry-Mather theory establishes the existence of a large collection of solutions of any rotation vector. For irrational rotation vectors this is the well-known Aubry-Mather set. It consists of global minim…
In this paper we answer positively a question of whether it is possible for a circle diffeomorphism with breaks to be smoothly conjugate to a rigid rotation in the case when its breaks are lying on pairwise distinct trajectories. An example constructed is a piecewise linear circle homeomorphism that has four break points lying on distinct trajectories, and whose invariant measure is absolutely continuous w.r.t.\ the Lebesgue measure. The irrational rotation number for our example can be chosen a Roth number, but not of bounded type.
We generalize the monotone shrinking target property (MSTP) to the s-exponent monotone shrinking target property (sMSTP) and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a circle rotation to have sMSTP. Using another variant of MSTP, we obtain a new, very short, proof of a known result, which concerns the behavior of irrational rotations and implies a logarithm law similar to D. Sullivan's logarithm law for geodesics.
We prove that any two real-analytic critical circle maps with cubic critical point and the same irrational rotation number of bounded type are $C^{1+α}$ conjugate for some $α>0$.
We consider products of a i.i.d. sequence in a set $\{f_1,\ldots,f_m\}$ of preserving orientation diffeomorphisms of the circle. we can naturally associate a Lyapunov exponent $λ$. Under few assumptions, it is known that $λ\leq 0$ and that the equality holds if and only if $f_1,\ldots,f_m$ are simultaneously conjugated to rotations. In this paper, we state a quantitative version of this fact in the case where $f_1,\ldots,f_m$ are $C^k$ perturbations of rotations with rotation numbers $ρ(f_1),\ldots,ρ(f_m)$ satisfying a simultaneous diophantine condition in the sense of Moser: we give a precise…
Two given orbits of a minimal circle homeomorphism $f$ are said to be geometrically equivalent if there exists a quasisymmetric circle homeomorphism identifying both orbits and commuting with $f$. By a well-known theorem due to Herman and Yoccoz, if $f$ is a smooth diffeomorphism with Diophantine rotation number, then any two orbits are geometrically equivalent. As it follows from the a-priori bounds of Herman and Swiatek, the same holds if $f$ is a critical circle map with rotation number of bounded type. By contrast, we prove in the present paper that if $f$ is a critical circle map whose ro…
Poincare's classification of the dynamics of homeomorphisms of the circle is one of the earliest, but still one of the most elegant, classification results in dynamical systems. Here we generalize this to quasiperiodically forced circle homeomorphisms, which have been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. Herman already showed two decades ago that a unique rotation number exists for all orbits in the quasiperiodically forced case. However, unlike the unforced case, no a priori bounds exist for the deviations from the average rotation. This plays an important role in the attempt…
We study quasiperiodically forced circle endomorphisms, homotopic to the identity, and show that under suitable conditions these exhibit uncountably many minimal sets with a complicated structure, to which we refer to as `strangely dispersed'. Along the way, we generalise some well-known results about circle endomorphisms to the uniquely ergodically forced case. Namely, all rotation numbers in the rotation interval of a uniquely ergodically forced circle endomorphism are realised on minimal sets, and if the rotation interval has non-empty interior then the topological entropy is strictly posit…
We prove that the polynomial entropy of an orientation preserving homeomorphism of the circle equals 1 when the homeomorphism is not conjugate to a rotation and that it is 0 otherwise. In a second part we prove that the polynomial entropy of a flow on the two dimensional torus associated with a $C^1$ nonvanishing vector field is less that $1$. We moreover prove that when the flow possesses periodic orbits its polynomial entropy equals 1 unless it is conjugate to a rotation (in this last case, the polynomial entropy is zero).
The rigidity theory for circle homeomophisms with breaks was studied intensively in the last 20 years. It was proved that under mild conditions of the Diophantine type on the rotation number any two $C^{2+α}$ smooth circle homeomorphisms with a break point are $C^1$ smoothly conjugate to each other, provided that they have the same rotation number and the same size of the break. In this paper we prove that the conjugacy may not be $C^{2-ν}$ even if the maps are analytic outside of the break points. This result shows that the rigidity theory for maps with singularities is very different from th…
We consider groups of orientation-preserving real analytic diffeomorphisms of the circle which have a finite image under the rotation number function. We show that if such a group is nondiscrete with respect to the $C^1$-topology then it has a finite orbit. As a corollary, we show that if such a group has no finite orbit then each of its subgroups contains either a cyclic group of finite index or a nonabelian free subgroup.
A general ansatz in Renormalization Theory, already established in many important situations, states that exponential convergence of renormalization orbits implies that topological conjugacies are actually smooth (when restricted to the attractors of the original systems). In this paper we establish this principle for a large class of bicritical circle maps, which are $C^3$ circle homeomorphisms with irrational rotation number and exactly two (non-flat) critical points. The proof presented here is an adaptation, to the bicritical setting, of the one given by de Faria and de Melo for the case o…
