We study the optical properties of gold nanoparticles coated with a nematic liquid crystal whose director field is distributed around the nanoparticle according to the anchoring conditions at the surface of the nanoparticle. The distribution of the nematic liquid crystal is obtained by minimization of the corresponding Frank free-energy functional whilst the optical response is calculated by the discrete-dipole approximation. We find, in particular, that the anisotropy of the nematic liquid-crystal coating does not affect much the (isotropic) optical response of the nanoparticle. However, for strong anchoring of the nematic liquid-crystal molecules on the surface of nanoparticle, the inhomogeneity of the coating which is manifested by a ring-type singularity (disclination or Saturn ring), produces an enhancement of the extinction cross spectrum over the entire visible spectrum.
Ligand coated nanoparticles are complex objects consisting of a metallic or semiconductor core with organic ligands grafted on their surface. These organic ligands provide stability to a nanoparticle suspension. In solutions, the effective interactions between such nanoparticles are mediated through a complex interplay of interactions between the nanoparticle cores, the surrounding ligands and the solvent molecules. While it is possible to compute these interactions using fully atomistic molecular simulations, such computations are too expensive for studying self-assembly of a large number of …
In this work, a theoretical study of phase equilibrium in mixtures of a calamitic nematic liquid crystal and hard spherical nanoparticles is presented. A mean-field thermodynamic model is used, where the interactions are considered to be proportional to the number of contacts, which in turn are proportional to the areas and area fractions of each component. It is shown that, as the radius of the particle is increased, the effect of the particles on the isotropic-nematic transition is less pronounced, and that for large radius the miscibility increases as the particle radius increases.
A systematic analysis of defect textures in facetted nanoparticles with polygonal configurations embedded in a nematic matrix is performed using the Landau-de Gennes model, homeotropic strong anchoring in a square domain with uniform alignment in the outer boundaries. Defect and textures are analyzed as functions of temperature T, polygon size R, and polygon number N. For nematic nanocomposites, the texture satisfies a defect charge balance equation between bulk and surface (particle corner) charges. Upon decreasing the temperature, the central bulk defects split and together with other -1/2 b…
We introduce a new experimental approach to study the structural transitions of large numbers of nanoparticle-coated droplets as their volume is reduced. We use an emulsion system where the dispersed phase is slightly soluble in the continuous phase. By adding a fixed amount of unsaturated continuous phase, the volume of the droplets can be controllably reduced, causing them to buckle or crumple, thereby becoming nonspherical. The resultant morphologies depend both on the extent of volume reduction and the average droplet size. The buckling and crumpling behavior implies that the droplet surfa…
Recent experiments on mixed liquid crystals have highlighted the hugely significant role of ferromagnetic nanoparticle impurities in defining the nematic-smectic-A phase transition point. Structured around a Flory-Huggins free energy of isotropic mixing and Landau-de Gennes free energy, this article presents a phenomenological mean-field model that quantifies the role of such impurities in analyzing thermodynamic phases, in a mixture of thermotropic smectic liquid crystal and ferromagnetic nanoparticles. First we discuss the impact of ferromagnetic nanoparticles on the isotropic-ferronematic a…

We study a ferromagnetic suspension or a suspension of magnetic nanoparticles in an anisotropic nematic medium, in three different one-dimensional variational settings, ordered in terms of increasing complexity. The three models are featured by a nematic energy, a magnetic energy and a magneto-nematic coupling energy and the experimentally observed patterns are modelled as local or global energy minimizers. We numerically observe polydomains with distinct states of magnetization for weak to moderate magneto-nematic coupling in our models. We demonstrate that these polydomains are stabilised by…
We show by means of continuum theory and simulations that geometric percolation in uniaxial nematics of hard slender particles is fundamentally different from that in isotropic dispersions. In the nematic, percolation depends only very weakly on the density and is, in essence, determined by a distance criterion that defines connectivity. This unexpected finding has its roots in the non-trivial coupling between the density and the degree of orientational order that dictate the mean number of particle contacts. Clusters in the nematic are much longer than wide, suggesting the use of nematics for…
Recent experiments have reported that ferroelectric nanoparticles have drastic effects on nematic liquid crystals--increasing the isotropic-nematic transition temperature by about 5 K, and greatly increasing the sensitivity to applied electric fields. To understand these effects, we develop a theory for the statistical mechanics of ferroelectric nanoparticles in liquid crystals. This theory predicts the enhancements of liquid-crystal properties, in good agreement with experiments. These predictions apply even when electrostatic interactions are partially screened by moderate concentrations of …
We study mutual alignment and interactions between colloidal particles of dissimilar shapes and dimensions when dispersed in a nematic host fluid. Convex pentagonal and concave starfruit-shaped nanoprisms and microspheres induce dipolar or quadrupolar director structures. The ensuing elastic pair interactions between microspheres and nanoprisms are highly dependent on the nanoparticle shape being omnidirectionally attractive for convex prisms but strongly anisotropic for concave prisms. Elastic deformations due to spherical particles cause well-defined alignment of complex-shaped nanoparticles…
We study experimentally the impact of spherical nanoparticles on the orientational order parameters of a host nematic liquid crystal. We use spherical core-shell quantum dots that are surface functionalized to promote homeotropic anchoring on their interface with the liquid crystal host. We show experimentally that the orientational order may be strongly affected by the presence of spherical nanoparticles even at low concentrations. The orientational order of the composite system is probed by means of polarised micro-Raman spectroscopy and by optical birefringence measurements as function of t…
Effective and controlled drug delivery systems with on-demand release abilities and biocompatible properties receive enormous attention for biomedical applications. Here, we describe a novel inorganic-organic hybrid material with a strikingly high organic content of almost 50 wt%. The colloidal periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) nanoparticles synthesized in this work consist entirely of curcumin and ethane derivatives serving as constituents that are crosslinked by siloxane bridges, without any added silica. These mesoporous curcumin nanoparticles (MCNs) exhibit very high surface areas (ov…
A thermodynamic model for a mixture of alkanethiol-coated nanoparticles (NPs) and low molecular weight (non-polymeric) solvent is developed, and calculations of liquid-liquid phase equilibrium for different values of NP core radius, alkanethiol chain length, solvent molar volume and alkanethiol-solvent interaction parameter, are presented. The model takes into account the swelling of the organic coronas and the dispersion of particles with swollen coronas in the solvent. The energetic interaction between alkyl chains and solvent is considered, both within the corona and between the outer alkyl…
Modification of calcium carbonate particles with surfactant significantly improves the properties of the calcium carbonate coating on paper. Unmodified and CTAB and oleate-modified calcium carbonate nanoparticles were prepared using the wet carbonation technique for paper coating. CTAB (cationic surfactant) and sodium oleate (anionic surfactant) were used to modify the size, morphology, and surface properties of the precipitated nanoparticles. The obtained particles were characterized by XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, zeta potential measurements, TGA and TEM. Coating colors were formulated from the …
We theoretically study the nematic ordering transition of rods that are able to elastically adjust their mutually excluded volumes. The model rods, which consist of a hard core surrounded by a deformable shell, mimic the structure of polymer-coated, rod-like fd virus particles that have recently been the object of experimental study [K.~Purdy et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{94}, 057801 (2005)]. We find that fluids of such soft rods exhibit an isotropic-nematic phase transition at a density higher than that of the corresponding hard-rod system of identical diameter, and that at coexistence the…
We study translational and rotational diffusion of anisotropic gold nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in the bulk of a nematic liquid crystal fluid host. Experimental data reveal strong anisotropy of translational diffusion with respect to the uniform far-field director, which is dependent on shape and surface functionalization of colloids as well as on their ground-state alignment. For example, elongated NPs aligned parallel to the far-field director translationally diffuse more rapidly along the director whereas diffusion of NPs oriented normal to the director is faster in the direction perpendi…
A theoretical analysis of homeotropic alignment induced by nanoparticles (NPs) in a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) sample cell is presented. It is found that such alignment on the surface of a NP causes a change in the orientation of the molecular director near the surface, which in turn induces variations in the elastic constants and free energy. The induced NLC properties allow coupling between nearby NPs, mediated by the NLC molecules. The rotation of the coupled NPs close to the substrate tends to induce a long-range orientation of the NLC molecular director, leading to modification in the a…
We present a theoretical model for the description of the adsorption kinetics of globular proteins onto charged core-shell microgel particles based on Dynamic Density Functional Theory (DDFT). This model builds on a previous description of protein adsorption thermodynamics [Yigit \textit{et al}, Langmuir 28 (2012)], shown to well interpret the available calorimetric experimental data of binding isotherms. In practice, a spatially-dependent free-energy functional including the same physical interactions is built, and used to study the kinetics via a generalised diffusion equation. To test this …
Several experiments have reported that ferroelectric nanoparticles have drastic effects on nematic liquid crystals--increasing the isotropic-nematic transition temperature by about 5 K, and greatly increasing the sensitivity to applied electric fields. In a recent paper [L. M. Lopatina and J. V. Selinger, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 197802 (2009)], we modeled these effects through a Landau theory, based on coupled orientational order parameters for the liquid crystal and the nanoparticles. This model has one important limitation: Like all Landau theories, it involves an expansion of the free energy …
We investigate the defect structures forming around two nanoparticles in a Gay-Berne nematic liquid crystal using molecular simulations. For small separations, disclinations entangle both particles forming the figure of eight, the figure of omega and the figure of theta. These defect structures are similar in shape and occur with a comparable frequency to micron-sized particles studied in experiments. The simulations reveal fast transitions from one defect structure to another suggesting that particles of nanometre size cannot be bound together effectively. We identify the 'three-ring' structu…
The response in capacitance to low external magnetic fields (up to 0.1 T) of suspensions of spherical magnetic nanoparticles, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), SWCNT functionalized with carboxyl group (SWCNT-COOH) and SWCNT functionalized with Fe$_3$O$_4$ nanoparticles in a nematic liquid crystal has been studied experimentally. The volume concentration of nanoparticles was $ϕ_1$ = 10$^{-4}$ and $ϕ_2$ = 10$^{-3}$. Independent of the type and the volume concentration of the nanoparticles, a linear response to low magnetic fields (far below the magnetic Fréederiksz transition threshold) has …
Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) of pure 5OCB and nanocolloids consisting of 5OCB and paraelectric or ferroelectric BaTiO${_3}$ nanoparticles (NPs) was performed on varying pressure or temperature. We found strong impact of NPs on static and dynamic phase behavior. In particular, strongest effects on pretransitional behavior were observed for a relatively low concentration of NPs which we attribute to the NPs-induced disorder. Paramagnetic or ferromagnetic character of NPs did not significantly influence measurements. However, several features measured using temperature or pressure path…
To prevent the flocculation and phase separation of nanoparticles in solution, nanoparticles are often functionalized with short chain surfactants. Here we present fully-atomistic molecular dynamics simulations which characterize how these functional coatings affect the interactions between nanoparticles and with the surrounding solvent. For 5 nm diameter silica nanoparticles coated with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) oligomers in water, we determined the hydrodynamic drag on two approaching nanoparticles moving through solvent and on a single nanoparticle as it approaches a planar surface. In mos…
We present a neutron spin echo study (NSE) of the nanosecond dynamics of polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalised nanosized gold particles dissolved in D$_2$O at two temperatures and two different PEG molecular weights. The analysis of the NSE data was performed by applying a Bayesian approach to the description of time correlation function decays in terms of exponential terms, recently proved to be theoretically rigorous. This approach, which addresses in a direct way the fundamental issue of model choice in any dynamical analysis, provides here a guide to the most statistically supported way…
Narrow membrane tubes are commonly pulled out from the surface of phospholipid vesicles using forces applied either through laser or magnetic tweezers or through the action of processive motor proteins. Recent examples have emerged where such tubes spontaneously grow from vesicles coated with bioactive cytoskeletal filaments (e.g. FtsZ, microtubule) in the presence GTP. We show how a soft vesicle deforms due to the interplay between its topology, local curvature and the forces due to the active filaments. We present results from Dynamically Triangulated Monte Carlo simulations of a spherical c…
We present an experimental study of the surface effects (interactions with the container walls) during the nucleation and growth of smectic B crystals from the nematic in free growth and directional solidification of a mesogenic molecule ($C_4H_9-(C_6H_{10})_2CN$) called CCH4 in thin (of thickness in the 10 $μ$m range) samples. We follow the dynamics of the system in real time with a polarizing microscope. The inner surfaces of the glass-plate samples are coated with polymeric films, either rubbed polyimid (PI) films or monooriented poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films deposited by friction …
Colloidal structure, energy extensivity and Monte Carlo sampling properties of improved short-range interaction models for surfactant-coated magnetic nanoparticles
Self-assembly is one of the crucial mechanisms allowing to design multifunctional materials. Soft hybrid materials contain components of different nature and exhibit competitive interactions which drive self-organisation into structures of a particular function. Here we demonstrate a novel type of a magnetic hybrid material where the molecular tilt can be manipulated through a delicate balance between the topologically-assisted colloidal self-assembly of \rev{magnetic nanoparticles} and the anisotropic molecular interactions in a liquid crystal matrix.
Liquid crystals are synthetic and biological viscoelastic anisotropic soft matter materials that combine liquid fluidity with crystal anisotropy and find use in optical devices, sensor/actuators, lubrication, super-fibers. Frequently mesogens are mixed with colloidal and nanoparticles, other mesogens, isotropic solvents, thermoplastic polymers, cross-linkable monomers, among others. This comprehensive review present recent progress on meso and macro scale thermodynamic modelling, highlighting the (i) novelties in spinodal and binodal lines in the various phase diagrams, (ii) the growth laws un…
Weak interactions form the core basis of a vast number of biological processes, in particular, those involving intrinsically disordered proteins. Here, we establish a new technique capable of probing these weak interactions between synthetic unfolded polypeptides using a convenient yet efficient, quantitative method based on single particle tracking of peptide-coated gold nanoparticles over peptide-coated surfaces. We demonstrate that our technique is sensitive enough to observe the influence of a single amino acid mutation on the transient peptide-peptide interactions. Furthermore, the effect…
Self-assembly of nanoparticles can enable composites with pre-designed properties but remains challenged by reproducing structural diversity of atomic and molecular crystals. We combine anisotropic elastic and weakly screened electrostatic interactions to guide both orientational and triclinic positional self-ordering of inorganic nanocrystals in a nematic fluid host. The lattice periodicity of these low-symmetry colloidal crystals is more than an order of magnitude larger than the nanoparticle size. Orientations of nanocrystals, as well as crystallographic axes of ensuing triclinic colloidal …
Landau - de Gennes mean field model predicts the discontinuous transition for the Isotropic - Nematic transition, associated with uniaxial and quadrupolar order parameter in three dimensions. This report shows pressure-related dielectric studies for rod-like nematogenic pentylcyanobiphenyl (5CB) and its nanocolloids with BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The scan of dielectric constant revealed the continuous I-N transition in a compressed nanocolloid with a tiny amount of nanoparticles (x=0.1%). For the nematic phase in 5CB and its x=1% nanocolloid the enormous values of dielectric constant and the bendi…
To model a nematic emulsion consisting of a surfactant-coated water droplet dispersed in a nematic host, we performed a molecular dynamics simulation of a droplet immersed in a system of 2048 Gay-Berne ellipsoids in a nematic phase. Strong radial anchoring at the surface of the droplet induced a Saturn ring defect configuration, consistent with theoretical predictions for very small droplets. A surface ring configuration was observed for lower radial anchoring strengths, and a pair of point defects was found near the poles of the droplet for tangential anchoring. We also simulated the falling …
We focus on a dilute uniform suspension of magnetic nanoparticles in a nematic-filled micron-sized shallow well with tangent boundary conditions, as a paradigm system with two coupled order parameters. This system exhibits spontaneous magnetization without magnetic fields. We numerically obtain the stable nematic and associated magnetization morphologies, induced purely by the geometry, boundary conditions and the coupling between the magnetic nanoparticles and the host nematic medium. Our most striking observations pertain to domain walls in the magnetization profile whose location can be man…
We present theoretical calculations for the absorption properties of protein-coated gold nanoparticles on graphene and graphite substrates. As the substrate is far away from nanoparticles, numerical results show that the number of protein bovine serum molecules molecules aggregating on gold surfaces can be quantitatively determined for gold nanoparticles with arbitrary size by means of the Mie theory and the absorption spectra. The presence of graphitic substrate near protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles substantially enhances the red shift of the surface plasmon resonances of the nanoparticl…
The anchoring of the nematic liquid crystal N-(p-methoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline (MBBA) on Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of fatty acids (COOHC$_{n}$H$_{2n+1}$) was studied as a function of the length of the fatty acid alkyl chains, $n$ ($n = 15, 17, 19, 21$). The monolayers were deposited onto ITO-coated glass plates which were used to assemble sandwich cells of various thickness that were filled with MBBA in the nematic phase. The mechanism of relaxation from the flow-induced quasi-planar to the surface-induced homeotropic alignment was studied for the four decreases linearly with increasin…
TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) are attracting materials for biomedical applications, provided that they are coated with polymers to improve solubility, dispersion and biocompatibility. Conformation, coverage density and solvent effects largely influence their functionality and stability. In this work, we use atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to study polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafting to highly curved TiO2 NPs (2-3 nm) in different solvents. We compare the coating polymer conformations on NPs with those on (101) flat surfaces. In water, the transition from mushroom to brush conformation start…
Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we study the rheology of a model hybrid mixture of liquid crystals (LCs) and dipolar soft spheres (DSS) representing magnetic nanoparticles. The bulk isotropic LC-DSS mixture is sheared with different shear rates using Lees-Edwards periodic boundary conditions. The steady-state rheological properties and the effect of the shear on the microstructure of the mixture are studied for different strengths of the dipolar coupling, $λ$, among the DSS. We find that at large shear rates, the mixture shows a shear-thinning behavior for all considered …
Recent surveys have shown that the number of nanoparticle-based formulations actually used at the clinical level is significantly lower than expected a decade ago. One reason for this is that the nanoparticle physicochemical properties fall short for handling the complexity of biological environments and for preventing nonspecific protein adsorption. In this study, we address the issue of the interactions of plasma proteins with polymer coated surfaces. To this aim, we use a non-covalent grafting-to method to functionalize iron oxide sub-10 nm nanoparticles and iron oxide flat substrates, and …
Nematic shells are colloidal particles coated with nematic liquid crystal molecules which may freely glide and rotate on the colloid's surface while keeping their long axis on the local tangent plane. We describe the nematic order on a shell by a unit director field on an orientable surface. Equilibrium fields can then be found by minimising the elastic energy, which in general is a function of the surface gradient of the director field. We learn how to extract systematically out of this energy a fossil component, related only to the surface and its curvatures, which expresses a curvature pote…
A promising approach of designing mesostructured materials with novel physical behavior is to combine unique optical and electronic properties of solid nanoparticles with long-range ordering and facile response of soft matter to weak external stimuli. Here we design, practically realize, and characterize orientationally ordered nematic liquid crystalline dispersions of rod-like upconversion nanoparticles. Boundary conditions on particle surfaces, defined through surface functionalization, promote spontaneous unidirectional self-alignment of the dispersed rod-like nanoparticles, mechanically co…
We investigated experimentally the magneto-optical and dielectric properties of magnetic-nanoparticle-doped nematic liquid crystals (ferronematics). Our studies focus on the effect of the very small orienting bias magnetic field $B_{bias}$, and that of the nematic director pretilt at the boundary surfaces in our systems sensitive to low magnetic fields. Based on the results we assert that $B_{bias}$ is not necessarily required for a detectable response to low magnetic fields, and that the initial pretilt, as well as the aggregation of the nanoparticles play an important (though not yet explore…
The biaxial phase in nematic liquid crystals has been elusive for several decades after its prediction in the 1970s. A recent experimental breakthrough was achieved by Liu et al. [PNAS 113, 10479 (2016)] in a liquid crystalline medium with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). They exploited the different length scales of dipolar and magneto-nematic interactions to obtain an equilibrium state where the magnetic moments are at an angle to the nematic director. This tilt introduces a second distinguished direction for orientational ordering or biaxiality in the two-component system. Using coarse-graine…
A long time ago, Brochard and de Gennes predicted the possibility of significantly decreasing the critical magnetic field of the Fredericksz transition (the magnetic Fredericksz threshold) in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals and ferromagnetic particles, the so-called ferronematics. This phenomenon has rarely been measured, usually due to soft homeotropic anchoring induced at the nanoparticle surface. Here we present an optical study of the magnetic Fredericksz transition combined with a light scattering study of the classical nematic liquid crystal, 5CB, doped with 6 nm diameter magnetic a…
This work presents a cost-effective alternative technology for the formation of nanostructured semiconductor materials for tunable light emitting devices. CdS and ZnS semiconducting colloid nanoparticles coated with organic shell, containing either SO3- or NH3+ groups, were deposited as thin films using the technique of electrostatic self-assembly. The films produced were characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry and AFM. UV-vis spectra show a substantial blue shift of the main absorption band of both CdS and ZnS with respect to the bulk materials due to the phenomenon…
Janus particles are special types of nano or micro particles possessing at least two surfaces with distinct physical or chemical properties. The most studied Janus particles are the metal-dielectric particles, in which half surface of dielectric particles is coated with a very thin layer of metals. The external electric field induces dipole moment, and consequently the particles exhibit self-assembled dynamic structures in concentrated aqueous suspensions. Here, we study metal-dielectric Janus particles in a nematic liquid crystal under AC electric field and demonstrate a novel method for meas…
Magnetic Fréedericksz transition was studied in ferronematics based on the nematic liquid crystal 4-(trans-4'-n-hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT). 6CHBT was doped with rod-like magnetic particles of different size and volume concentration. The volume concentrations of magnetic particles in the prepared ferronematics were $ϕ_1$ = 10$^{-4}$ and $ϕ_2$ = 10$^{-3}$. The structural changes were observed by capacitance measurements that demonstrate a significant influence of the concentration, the shape anisotropy, and/or the size of the magnetic particles on the magnetic response of the…
In this paper, the two-dimensional pure bending of a hyperelastic substrate coated by a nematic liquid crystal elastomer (abbreviated as NLCE) is studied within the framework of nonlinear elasticity. The governing system, arising from the deformational momentum balance, the orientational momentum balance and the mechanical constraint, is formulated, and the corresponding exact solution is derived for a given constitutive model. It is found that there exist two different bending solutions. In order to determine which the preferred one is, we compare the total potential energy for both solutions…
Aqueous suspensions of Laponite, a system composed of disk-like nanoparticles, are found to develop optical birefringence over several days, well after the suspensions solidified due to jamming. The optical anisotropy is particularly enhanced near the air Laponite suspension interface over length-scales of several millimetres, which is beyond five orders of magnitude larger than the particle length scale, suggestive of large scale ordering influenced by the interface. The orientational order increases with time and is always greater for higher concentration of salt, higher concentration of Lap…
Colloidal crystals exhibit structural color without any color pigment due to the crystals' periodic nanostructure, which can interfere with visible light. This crystal structure is iridescent as the resulting color changes with the viewing or illumination angle, which limits its use for printing or displays. To eliminate the iridescent property, it is important to make the packing of the colloidal nanoparticles disordered. Here, we introduce a drop-casting method where a droplet of a water- ethanol mixture containing monodisperse polymer-coated silica nanoparticles creates a relatively uniform…
We have studied the effects of quenched random disorder created by dispersed aerosil nanoparticle gels on the nematic to smectic-A (N-SmA) and smectic-A to reentrant nematic (SmA- RN) phase transitions of thermotropic liquid crystal mixtures of 6OCB (hexyloxycyanobiphenyl) and 8OCB (octyloxycyanobiphenyl). These effects are probed using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. We find that the reentrant characteristics of the system are largely unchanged by the presence of the aerosil gel network. By comparing measurements of the smectic static structure amplitude for this 8OC…
It is well known that the alignment of liquid crystals can be realized by rubbing or photoalignment technologies. Recently nonlinear laser lithography was introduced as a fast, relatively low-cost method for large area nano-grating fabrication based on laser-induced periodic surface structuring. In this letter for the first time the usage of the nonlinear laser lithography as a perspective method of the alignment of nematics was presented. By nonlinear laser lithography, microgrooves with about 1 μm period were formed on Ti layer. The microstructured Ti layer was coated with oxidianiline-polyi…
