The biaxial phase in nematic liquid crystals has been elusive for several decades after its prediction in the 1970s. A recent experimental breakthrough was achieved by Liu et al. [PNAS 113, 10479 (2016)] in a liquid crystalline medium with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). They exploited the different length scales of dipolar and magneto-nematic interactions to obtain an equilibrium state where the magnetic moments are at an angle to the nematic director. This tilt introduces a second distinguished direction for orientational ordering or biaxiality in the two-component system. Using coarse-grained Ginzburg-Landau free energy models for the nematic and magnetic fields, we provide a theoretical framework which allows for the manipulation of morphologies and quantitative estimates of biaxial order.
We revisit the classic problem of the structure of the isotropic-nematic interface within Ginzburg-Landau-de Gennes theory, refining previous analytic treatments of biaxiality at the interface. We compare our analysis with numerical results obtained through a highly accurate spectral collocation scheme for the solution of the Landau-Ginzburg-de Gennes equations. In comparison to earlier work, we obtain improved agreement with numerics for both the uniaxial and biaxial profiles, accurate asymptotic results for the decay of biaxial order on both nematic and isotropic sides of the interface and a…
Both uniaxial and biaxial nematic liquid crystals are defined by orientational ordering of their building blocks. While uniaxial nematics only orient the long molecular axis, biaxial order implies local order along three axes. As the natural degree of biaxiality and the associated frame, that can be extracted from the tensorial description of the nematic order, vanishes in the uniaxial phase, we extend the nematic director to a full biaxial frame by making use of a singular value decomposition of the gradient of the director field instead. New defects and degrees of freedom are unveiled and th…
We extend our previous work on monolayers of uniaxial particles [J. Chem. Phys. 140, 204906 (2014)] to study the effect of particle biaxiality on the phase behavior of liquid-crystal monolayers. Particles are modelled as board-like hard bodies with three different edge lengths $σ_1\geqσ_2\geqσ_3$, and use is made of the restricted-orientation approximation (Zwanzig model). A density-functional formalism based on the fundamental-measure theory is used to calculate phase diagrams for a wide range of values of the largest aspect ratio ($κ_1=σ_1/σ_3\in[1,100]$). We find that particle biaxiality in…
We calculate the interaction between two spherical colloidal particles embedded in the isotropic phase of a nematogenic liquid. The surface of the particles induces wetting nematic coronas that mediate an elastic interaction. In the weak wetting regime, we obtain exact results for the interaction energy and the texture, showing that defects and biaxiality arise, although they are not topologically required. We evidence rich behaviors, including the possibility of reversible colloidal aggregation and dispersion. Complex anisotropic self-assembled phases might be formed in dense suspensions.
Nematic liquid crystals possess three different phases: isotropic, uniaxial, and biaxial. The ground state of most nematics is either isotropic or uniaxial, depending on the external temperature. Nevertheless, biaxial domains have been frequently identified, especially close to defects or external surfaces. In this paper we show that any spatially-varying director pattern may be a source of biaxiality. We prove that biaxiality arises naturally whenever the symmetric tensor $\Sb=(\grad \nn)(\grad \nn)^T$ possesses two distinct nonzero eigenvalues. The eigenvalue difference may be used as a meas…
Monte Carlo simulation performed on a lattice system of biaxial molecules possessing $D_{2h}$ symmetry and interacting with a second rank anisotropic dispersion potential yields three distinct macroscopic phases depending on the biaxiality of the constituent molecules. The phase diagram of such a system as a function of molecular biaxiality is greatly modified when a transverse dipole is considered to be associated with each molecule so that the symmetry is reduced to $C_{2v}$. Our results indicate the splitting of the Landau point i.e. the point in the phase diagram where a direct transition …
How change in molecular structure can affect relative stability and structural properties of the twist-bend nematic phase (N$_\text{TB}$)? Here we extend the mean-field model [C. Greco et al., Soft Matter, 2014, 10, 9318] for bent-shaped achiral molecules, to study the influence of arm molecular biaxiality and the value of molecule's bend angle on relative stability of N$_\text{TB}$. In particular we show that by controlling biaxiality of molecule's arms up to four ordered phases can become stable. They involve locally uniaxial and biaxial variants of N$_\text{TB}$, together with the uniaxial …
The possible symmetries of the biaxial nematic phase are examined against the implications of the presently available experimental results. Contrary to the widespread notion that biaxial nematics have orthorhombic symmetry, our study shows that a monoclinic ($C_{2h}$) symmetry is more likely to be the case for the recently observed phase biaxiality in thermotropic bent-core and calamitc tetrapode nematic systems. The methodology for differentiating between the possible symmetries of the biaxial nematic phase by NMR and by IR spectroscopy measurements is presented in detail. The manifestations …
We study the symmetry and the spatial uniformity of orientational order of the biaxial nematic phase in the light of recent experimental observations of phase biaxiality in thermotropic bent-core and calamitic-tetramer nematics. We present evidence supporting monoclinic symmetry, instead of the usually assumed orthorhombic. We describe the use of deuterium NMR to differentiate between the possible symmetries. We present the spatial aspects of biaxial order in the context of the cluster model, wherein macroscopic biaxiality can result from the field-induced alignment of biaxial and possibly pol…
The effect of confinement on the phase behaviour and structure of fluids made of biaxial hard particles (cuboids) is examined theoretically by means of Onsager second-order virial theory in the limit where the long particle axes are frozen in a mutually parallel configuration. Confinement is induced by two parallel planar hard walls (slit-pore geometry), with particle long axes perpendicular to the walls (perfect homeotropic anchoring). In bulk, a continuous nematic-to-smectic transition takes place, while shape anisotropy in the (rectangular) particle cross section induces biaxial ordering. A…
Inspired by the observations of a remarkably stable biaxial nematic phase [E.v.d. Pol et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 258301 (2009)], we investigate the effect of size polydispersity on the phase behavior of a suspension of boardlike particles. By means of Onsager theory within the restricted orientation (Zwanzig) model we show that polydispersity induces a novel topology in the phase diagram, with two Landau tetracritical points in between which oblate uniaxial nematic order is favored over the expected prolate order. Additionally, this phenomenon causes the opening of a huge stable biaxiality …
Thermotropic biaxial nematic phases seem to be rare, but biaxial smectic A phases less so. Here we use molecular field theory to study a simple two-parameter model, with one parameter promoting a biaxial phase and the second promoting smecticity. The theory combines the biaxial Maier-Saupe and McMillan models. We use alternatively the Sonnet-Virga-Durand (SVD) and geometric mean approximations (GMA) to characterize molecular biaxiality by a single parameter. For non-zero smecticity and biaxiality, the model always predicts a ground state biaxial smectic A phase. For a low degree of smectic ord…
We investigate the origin of secondary disclinations that were recently described as a new evidence of a biaxial nematic phase in an oxadiazole bent-core thermotropic liquid crystal C7. With an assortment of optical techniques such as polarizing optical microscopy, LC PolScope, and fluorescence confocal polarizing microscopy, we demonstrate that the secondary disclinations represent non-singular domain walls formed in an uniaxial nematic during the surface anchoring transition, in which surface orientation of the director changes from tangential (parallel to the bounding plates) to tilted. Eac…
Phase sequences of the biaxial nematic liquid crystal in the interior of the essential triangle are studied with Wang Landau sampling. The evidence points to the existence of an intermediate unixial phase with low biaxiality in the isotropic to biaxial nematic phase sequence.
We employ a lattice-gas extension of the Maier--Saupe model with discrete orientation states to study the phase behavior of a statistical model for biaxial nematogenic units in mean-field theory. The phase behavior of the system is investigated in terms of the strength of isotropic interaction between anisotropic objects, as well as the degree of biaxiality and the concentration of those units. We obtain phase diagrams with isotropic phases and stable biaxial and uniaxial nematic structures, various phase coexistences, many types of critical and multicritical behaviors, such as ordinary vapor-…
An intermediate nematic phase is proposed for the interpretation of recent experimental results on phase biaxiality in bent-core nematics. The phase is macroscopically uniaxial but consists of microscopic biaxial, and possibly polar, domains. On applying an electric field the phase exhibits substantial macroscopic biaxial ordering resulting from the collective alignment of the domains. A phenomenological theory is developed for the molecular order in this phase and for its transitions to purely uniaxial and to spontaneously biaxial nematic phases.
Surface-induced profiles of both nematic and smectic order parameters in a nematic liquid crystal, ranging from an orienting substrate to "infinity", were evaluated numerically on base of an extended Landau theory. In order to obtain a smooth behavior of the solutions at "infinity" a boundary energy functional was derived by linearizing the Landau energy around its equilibrium solutions. We find that the intrinsic wave number of the smectic structure, which plays the role of a coupling between nematic and smectic order, strongly influences the director reorientation. Whereas the smectic order …
Nematic liquid crystals confined to geometrically as well as chemically patterned substrate on one end and a flat substrate with strong anchoring on the other is studied using non-Boltzmann Monte Carlo methods. We observe significant deviations from the continuum-based predictions of the phase diagram which was studied as a function of tilt angle at the top substrate and thickness of the cell. Onset of biaxiality at larger tilt angles at the top substrate is observed. A phase shift introduced between the geometrical and chemical pattern has significant effect on the director structures in the …
The ordering matrix, which was originally introduced by de Gennes, is a well-known mathematical device for describing orientational order of biaxial nematic liquid crystal. In this paper we propose a new interpretation of the ordering matrix. We slightly modify the definition of the ordering matrix and call it the geometric order parameter. The geometric order parameter is a linear transformation which transforms a tensorial quantity of an individual molecule to a tensorial quantity observed at a macroscopic scale. The degree of order is defined as the singular value of the geometric order par…
We propose a simple surface potential favoring the planar degenerate anchoring of nematic liquid crystals, i.e., the tendency of the molecules to align parallel to one another along any direction parallel to the surface. We show that, at lowest order in the tensorial Landau-de Gennes order-parameter, fourth-order terms must be included. We analyze the anchoring and wetting properties of this surface potential. In the nematic phase, we find the desired degenerate planar anchoring, with positive scalar order-parameter and some surface biaxiality. In the isotropic phase, we find, in agreement wit…
We present a high accuracy Monte Carlo simulation study of the Isotropic - Nematic phase transition of a lattice dispersion model of biaxial liquid crystals. The NI coexistence curve terminating at the Landau critical point have been determined using multiple histogram reweighting technique. A close investigation reveals a sharp departure in the nature of the $N$-$I$ coexistence curve in temperature- biaxiality parameter phase diagram in comparison to the earlier theoretical (either mean-field or computer simulation) predictions. The coexitence curve shows a change in curvature with increasing …
We introduce shape fluctuations in a liquid-crystalline system by considering an elementary Maier--Saupe lattice model for a mixture of uniaxial and biaxial molecules. Shape variables are treated in the annealed (thermalized) limit. We analyze the thermodynamic properties of this system in terms of temperature $T$, concentration $c$ of intrinsically biaxial molecules, and a parameter $Δ$ associated with the degree of biaxiality of the molecules. At the mean-field level, we use standard techniques of statistical mechanics to draw global phase diagrams, which are shown to display a rich structur…
Field-induced reorientation of colloidal particles is especially relevant to manipulate the optical properties of a nanomaterial for target applications. We have recently shown that surprisingly feeble external stimuli are able to transform uniaxial nematic liquid crystals (LCs) of cuboidal particles into biaxial nematic LCs. In the light of these results, here we apply an external field that forces the reorientation of colloidal cuboids in nematic LCs and sparks a uniaxial-to-biaxial texture switching. By Dynamic Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the unsteady-state reorientation dynamics…
Colloidal cuboids have the potential to self-assemble into biaxial liquid crystal phases, which exhibit two independent optical axes. Over the last few decades, several theoretical works predicted the existence of a wide region of the phase diagram where the biaxial nematic phase would be stable, but imposed rather strong constraints on the particle rotational degrees of freedom. In this work, we employ molecular simulation to investigate the impact of size dispersity on the phase behaviour of freely-rotating hard cuboids, here modelled as self-dual-shaped nanoboards. This peculiar anisotropy,…
We use a variational principle to derive a mathematical model for a nematic electrolyte in which the liquid crystalline component is described in terms of a second-rank order tensor. The model extends the previously developed director-based theory and accounts for presence of disclinations and possible biaxiality. We verify the model by considering a simple but illustrative example of liquid crystal-enabled electro-osmotic flow (LCEO) around a stationary dielectric spherical particle placed at the center of a large cylindrical container filled with a nematic electrolyte. Assuming homeotropic a…
Present work is a theoretical study on the stability of the thermotropic biaxial nematic liquid crystal phase in model systems. Its main aim is to present the phase diagrams of spatially uniform liquid mesophases and to identify the molecular parameters that influence the stability of the biaxial nematic. The diagrams are obtained by means of the Local Density Functional Theory in low density approximation, and the relation between the molecular parameters of the models and macroscopic properties of the system close to the transition point are obtained by means of bifurcation analysis. We cons…
The understanding of self-organization in the twist-bend nematic $(N_\text{TB})$ phase, identified in 2011 in liquid crystal dimers, is at the forefront of soft matter research worldwide. This new nematic phase develops structural chirality in the isotropic $(I)$ and the uniaxial nematic $(N_\text{U})$ phases, despite the fact that the molecules forming the structure are chemically achiral. Molecular, shape-induced flexopolarization provides a viable mechanism for a qualitative understanding of $N_\text{TB}$ and the related phase transitions. The key question that remains is whether with this …
We consider a simple Maier-Saupe statistical model with the inclusion of disorder degrees of freedom to mimic the phase diagram of a mixture of rod-like and disc-like molecules. A quenched distribution of shapes leads to the existence of a stable biaxial nematic phase, in qualitative agreement with experimental findings for some ternary lyotropic liquid mixtures. An annealed distribution, however, which is more adequate to liquid mixtures, precludes the stability of this biaxial phase. We then use a two-temperature formalism, and assume a separation of relaxation times, to show that a partial …
We present a general theory of liquid crystals under inhomogeneous electric field in a Ginzburg-Landau scheme. The molecular orientation can be deformed by electric field when the dielectric tensor is orientation-dependent. We then investigate the influence of a charged particle on the orientation order in a nematic state. The director is aligned either along or perpendicular to the local electric field around the charge, depending on the sign of the dielectric anisotropy. The deformation becomes stronger with increasing the ratio $Ze/R$, where $Ze$ is the charge and $R$ is the radius of the p…
A system of hard spheroplatelets near an impenetrable wall is studied in the low-density Onsager approximation. Spheroplatelets have optimal shape between rods and plates, and the direct transition from the isotropic to biaxial nematic phase is present. A simple local approximation for the one-particle distribution function is used. Analytical results for the surface tension and the entropy contributions are derived. The density and the order-parameter profiles near the wall are calculated. The preferred orientation of the short molecule axes is perpendicular to the wall. Biaxiality close to t…
We analyze the global phase diagram of a Maier-Saupe lattice model with the inclusion of disorder degrees of freedom to mimic a mixture of oblate and prolate molecules (discs and cylinders). In the neighborhood of a Landau multicritical point, solutions of the statistical problem can be written as a Landau-de Gennes expansion for the free energy. If the disorder degrees of freedom are quenched, we confirm the existence of a biaxial nematic strucure. If orientational and disorder degrees of freedom are allowed to thermalize, this biaxial solution becomes thermodynamically unstable. Also, we use…
We study in detail the influence of molecular interactions on the Frank elastic constants of uniaxial nematic liquid crystals composed of molecules of cylindrical symmetry. A brief summary of the status of theoretical development for the elastic constants of nematics is presented. Considering a pair potential having both repulsive and attractive parts numerical calculations are reported for three systems MBBA, PAA and 8OCB. For these systems the length-to-width ratio ${x_0}$ is estimated from the experimentally proposed structure of the molecules. The repulsive interaction is represented by a …
Molecules of a nematic liquid crystal respond to an applied magnetic field by reorienting themselves in the direction of the field. Since the dielectric anisotropy of a nematic is small, it takes relatively large fields to elicit a significant liquid crystal response. The interaction may be enhanced in colloidal suspensions of ferromagnetic particles in a liquid crystalline matrix---ferronematics--- as proposed by Brochard and de Gennes in 1970. The ability of these particles to align with the field and, simultaneously, cause reorientation of the nematic molecules, greatly increases the magnet…
Different phoretic driving mechanisms have been proposed for the transport of solid or liquid microscopic inclusions in integrated chemical processes. However, the ability to reversibly address both the flow path, rate, and local reactant concentration has not yet been realized. Here we show that a substrate chemically modified with photosensitive self-assembled monolayers allows to directly command the assembly and transport of large ensembles of micron-size particles and drops dispersed in a thin layer of anisotropic fluid. Our strategy separates particle driving, realized via AC electrophor…
We investigate the phase diagram of a discrete version of the Maier-Saupe model with the inclusion of additional degrees of freedom to mimic a distribution of rodlike and disklike molecules. Solutions of this problem on a Bethe lattice come from the analysis of the fixed points of a set of nonlinear recursion relations. Besides the fixed points associated with isotropic and uniaxial nematic structures, there is also a fixed point associated with a biaxial nematic structure. Due to the existence of large overlaps of the stability regions, we resorted to a scheme to calculate the free energy of …
We study a class of models for \sbentcore molecules using low density version of Local Density Functional Theory. Arms of the molecules are modeled using two- and three Gay-Berne (GB) interacting units of uniaxial and biaxial symmetry. Dipole-dipole interactions are taken into account by placing a dipole moment along the ${\mathcal{C}}_2$symmetry axis of the molecule. The main aim of the study is to identify molecular factors that can help stabilizing the biaxial nematic phase. The phase diagrams involving isotropic ($I$), uniaxial ($N_U$) and biaxial ($N_B$) nematic phases are determined at g…
We demonstrate a novel method to assemble and transport swarms of colloidal particles by combining liquid crystals enabled electrophoresis and photo-sensitive surface patterning. Colloidal particles are propelled in a nematic liquid crystal via application of an alternating current electric field. Swarms of particles are assembled into a rotating mill cluster, or moved as a whole along predefined paths photo-imprinted on chemically functionalized substrates. This technique represents an alternative approach to fluid based lab-on-a-chip technologies guiding the motion of large ensembles of micr…
We perform optical, surface anchoring, and textural studies of an organo-siloxane tetrapode material in the broad temperature range of the nematic phase. The optical, structural, and topological features are compatible with the uniaxial nematic order rather than with the biaxial nematic order, in the entire nematic temperature range -25C < T < 46C studied. For homeotropic alignment, the material experiences surface anchoring transition, but the director can be realigned into an optically uniaxial texture by applying a sufficiently strong electric field. The topological features of textures in …
One of the central experimental efforts in nematic colloids research aims to explore how the interplay between the geometry of particles along with the accompanying nematic director deformations and defects around them can provide a means of guiding particle self-assembly and controlling the structure of particle-induced defects. In this work, we design, fabricate, and disperse low-symmetry colloidal particles with shapes of spirals, double spirals, and triple spirals in a nematic fluid. These spiral-shaped particles, which are controlled by varying their surface functionalization to provide t…
In search for novel nematic materials, a laterally linked H-shaped liquid crystal dimer have been synthesized and characterized. The distinct feature of the material is a very broad temperature range (about 50 oC) of the nematic phase, which is in contrast with other reported H-dimers that show predominantly smectic phases. The material exhibits interesting textural features at the scale of nanometers (presence of smectic clusters) and at the macroscopic scales. Namely, at a certain temperature, the flat samples of the material show occurrence of domain walls. These domain walls are caused by …

Advent of nematic liquid crystals flows have attracted renewed attention in view of microfluidic transport phenomena. Among various transport processes, electroosmosis stands as one of the efficient flow actuation method through narrow confinement. In the present study, we explore the electrically actuated flow of a nematic fluid with ionic inclusions taking into account the influences from surface induced elastic and electrical double layer phenomena. Influence of surface effects on the flow characteristics is known to get augmented in micro-confined environment and must be properly addressed…
We demonstrate several examples of driving and steering of colloids when dispersed in nematic liquid crystals. The driving mechanism is based on the principle of nonlinear electrophoresis which is mediated by the asymmetry in the structure of the defects that the inclusions generate in the host elastic matrix. The steering mechanism originates in the photoactivation of the anchoring conditions of the nematic liquid crystal on one of the enclosing plates. As experimental realizations we first review a scenario of water microdroplets being phoretically transported for cargo release and chemical …
Numerical modeling of nematic liquid crystals using the tensorial Landau-de Gennes (LdG) theory provides detailed insights into the structure and energetics of the enormous variety of possible topological defect configurations that may arise when the liquid crystal is in contact with colloidal inclusions or structured boundaries. However, these methods can be computationally expensive, making it challenging to predict (meta)stable configurations involving several colloidal particles, and they are often restricted to system sizes well below the experimental scale. Here we present an open-source…
