We prove a central limit theorem (CLT) for the product of a class of random singular matrices related to a random Hill's equation studied by Adams$\unicode{x2013}$Bloch$\unicode{x2013}$Lagarias. The CLT features an explicit formula for the variance in terms of the distribution of the matrix entries and this allows for exact calculation in some examples. Our proof relies on a novel connection to the theory of $m$-dependent sequences which also leads to an interesting and precise nondegeneracy condition.
Consider a $N\times n$ random matrix $Y_n=(Y_{ij}^{n})$ where the entries are given by $$ Y_{ij}^{n}=\frac{σ_{ij}(n)}{\sqrt{n}} X_{ij}^{n} $$ the $X_{ij}^{n}$ being centered, independent and identically distributed random variables with unit variance and $(σ_{ij}(n); 1\le i\le N, 1\le j\le n)$ being an array of numbers we shall refer to as a variance profile. We study in this article the fluctuations of the random variable $$ \log\det(Y_n Y_n^* + ρI_N) $$ where $Y^*$ is the Hermitian adjoint of $Y$ and $ρ> 0$ is an additional parameter. We prove that when centered and properly rescaled, this r…
In \cite{MPU} a functional CLT was obtained for triangular arrays satisfying the Lindeberg condition, that the sum of the individual variances is at most the same order as the variance of the underlying sum, and under the optimal mixing rats $\sum_{n}ρ(2^n)<\infty$, where $ρ(\cdot)$ are the $ρ$-mixing coefficients of the array. In this paper we will present alternative conditions which do not involve the assumption on the sum of variances, and instead we will assume certain maximal moment assumptions (which we can verify for $ϕ$-mixing arrays) and mixing rates of the form $\sum_nρ(e^{G(n)})<\i…
We consider three matrix models of order 2 with one random entry $ε$ and the other three entries being deterministic. In the first model, we let $ε\sim\textrm{Bernoulli}\left(\frac{1}{2}\right)$. For this model we develop a new technique to obtain estimates for the top Lyapunov exponent in terms of a multi-level recursion involving Fibonacci-like sequences. This in turn gives a new characterization for the Lyapunov exponent in terms of these sequences. In the second model, we give similar estimates when $ε\sim\textrm{Bernoulli}\left(p\right)$ and $p\in [0,1]$ is a parameter. Both of these mode…
Simple analysis of the leftmost eigenvalue of Ince's equation (a boundary value problem with periodicity) resolves an open issue surrounding a stochastic Lyapunov exponent. Numerical verification is also provided.
We show that the variance of centred linear statistics of eigenvalues of GUE matrices remains bounded for large $n$ for some classes of test functions less regular than Lipschitz functions. This observation is suggested by the limiting form of the variance (which has previously been computed explicitly), but it does not seem to appear in the literature. We combine this fact with comparison techniques following Tao-Vu and Erdös, Yau, et al. and a Littlewood-Paley type decomposition to extend the central limit theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics to functions in the Hölder class $C^{1/2+ε}$ …
In this paper we find the asymptotic main term of the variance of the number of roots of Kostlan-Shub-Smale random polynomials and prove a central limit theorem for the number of roots as the degree goes to infinity.
We prove the central limit theorem (CLT) for a sequence of independent zero-mean random variables $ξ_j$, perturbed by predictable multiplicative factors $λ_j$ with values in intervals $[\underlineλ_j,\overlineλ_j]$. It is assumed that the sequences $\underlineλ_j$, $\overlineλ_j$ are bounded and satisfy some stabilization condition. Under the classical Lindeberg condition we show that the CLT limit, corresponding to a "worst" sequence $λ_j$, is described by the solution $v$ of one-dimensional $G$-heat equation. The main part of the proof follows Peng's approach to the CLT under sublinear expec…
In this paper we study the functional central limit theorem for stationary Markov chains with self-adjoint operator and general state space. We investigate the case when the variance of the partial sum is not asymptotically linear in n; and establish that conditional convergence in distribution of partial sums implies functional CLT. The main tools are maximal inequalities that are further exploited to derive conditions for tightness and convergence to the Brownian motion.
In this work, we show that uniform integrability is not a necessary condition for central limit theorems (CLT) to hold for normalized multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) estimators and we provide near optimal weaker conditions under which the CLT is achieved. In particular, if the variance decay rate dominates the computational cost rate (i.e., $β> γ$), we prove that the CLT applies to the standard (variance minimizing) MLMC estimator. For other settings where the CLT may not apply to the standard MLMC estimator, we propose an alternative estimator, called the mass-shifted MLMC estimator, to which t…
In this article, we establish a central limit theorem for the capacity of the range process for a class of $d$-dimensional symmetric $α$-stable random walks with the index satisfying $d > 5α/2$. Our approach is based on controlling the limit behavior of the variance of the capacity of the range process which then allows us to apply the Lindeberg-Feller theorem.
We give a stochastic calculus proof of the Central Limit Theorem \[ {\int (L^{x+h}_{t}- L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx- 4ht\over h^{3/2}} \stackrel{\mathcal{L}}{\Longrightarrow}c(\int (L^{x}_{t})^{2} dx)^{1/2} η\] as $h\to 0$ for Brownian local time $L^{x}_{t}$. Here $η$ is an independent normal random variable with mean zero and variance one.
Let $η_i$, $i\ge 1$, be a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables with finite third moment, and let $Δ_n$ be the total variation distance between the distribution of $S_n:=\sum_{i=1}^nη_i$ and the normal distribution with the same mean and variance. In this note, we show the dichotomy that either $Δ_n=1$ for all $n$ or $Δ_n=O\left(n^{-1/2}\right)$.
We consider linear spectral statistics of the form $\mathrm{tr} ( φ(H))$ for test functions $φ$ of low regularity and Wigner matrices $H$ with smooth entry distribution. We show that for functions $φ$ in the Sobolev space $H^{1/2+\varepsilon}$ or the space $C^{1/2+\varepsilon}$, that are supported within the spectral bulk of the semicircle distribution, these linear spectral statistics have asymptotic Gaussian fluctuations with the same variance as in the CLT for functions of higher regularity, for any $\varepsilon >0$.
A law of large numbers and a central limit theorem are derived for linear statistics of random symmetric matrices whose on-or-above diagonal entries are independent, but neither necessarily identically distributed, nor necessarily all of the same variance. The derivation is based on systematic combinatorial enumeration, study of generating functions, and concentration inequalities of the Poincare type. Special cases treated, with an explicit evaluation of limiting variances, are generalized Wigner and Wishart matrices.
For large dimensional non-Hermitian random matrices $X$ with real or complex independent, identically distributed, centered entries, we consider the fluctuations of $f(X)$ as a matrix where $f$ is an analytic function around the spectrum of $X$. We prove that for a generic bounded square matrix $A$, the quantity $\mathrm{Tr}f(X)A$ exhibits Gaussian fluctuations as the matrix size grows to infinity, which consists of two independent modes corresponding to the tracial and traceless parts of $A$. We find a new formula for the variance of the traceless part that involves the Frobenius norm of $A$ …
We prove a Central Limit Theorem for the number of zeros of random trigonometric polynomials of the form $K^{-1/2}\sum_{n=1}^{K} a_n\cos(nt)$, being $(a_n)_n$ independent standard Gaussian random variables. In particular, we prove the conjecture by Farahmand, Granville & Wigman that the variance is equivalent to $V^2K$, $0<V^2<\infty$, as $K\to\infty$. % The case of stationary trigonometric polynomials was studied by Granville & Wigman and by Aza\"\is & León. Our approach is based on the Hermite/Wiener-Chaos decomposition for square-integrable functionals of a Gaussian process and on Rice Form…
The Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for additive functionals of Markov chains is a well known result with a long history. In this paper we present applications to two finite-memory versions of the Elephant Random Walk, solving a problem from arXiv:1812.01915. We also present a derivation of the CLT for additive functionals of finite state Markov chains, which is based on positive recurrence, the CLT for IID sequences and some elementary linear algebra, and which focuses on characterization of the variance.
We establish a quenched Central Limit Theorem (CLT) for a smooth observable of random sequences of iterated linear hyperbolic maps on the torus. To this end we also obtain an annealed CLT for the same system. We show that, almost surely, the variance of the quenched system is the same as for the annealed system. Our technique is the study of the transfer operator on an anisotropic Banach space specifically tailored to use the cone condition satisfied by the maps.
We prove the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) from the definition of weak convergence using the Haar wavelet basis, calculus, and elementary probability. The use of the Haar basis pinpoints the role of $L^{2}([0,1])$ in the CLT as well as the assumption of finite variance. We estimate the rate of convergence and prove strong convergence away from the tails.
In this paper we study the central limit theorem for additive functionals of stationary Markov chains with general state space by using a new idea involving conditioning with respect to both the past and future of the chain. Practically, we show that any additive functionals of a stationary and totally ergodic Markov chain with the variance of S_n divided by n uniformly bounded, satisfies a square root central limit theorem with a random centering. We do not assume that the Markov chain is irreducible and aperiodic. However, the random centering is not needed if the Markov chain satisfies stro…
We find a sufficient condition under which a central limit theorem for a stationary linear process is quenched. We find a stationary linear process szatisfying the Maxwell-Woodroofe condition for which the variances of partial sums are o(n), there is a CLT with a convergence towards N(0,1) when dividing by standard deviation of the partial sums, and the CLT is not quenched. The weak invariance principle does not hold.
We study the renormalized real sample covariance matrix $H=X^TX/\sqrt{MN}-\sqrt{M/N}$ with $N/M\rightarrow0$ as $N, M\rightarrow \infty$ in this paper. And we always assume $M=M(N)$. Here $X=[X_{jk}]_{M\times N}$ is an $M\times N$ real random matrix with i.i.d entries, and we assume $\mathbb{E}|X_{11}|^{5+δ}<\infty$ with some small positive $δ$. The Stieltjes transform $m_N(z)=N^{-1}Tr(H-z)^{-1}$ and the linear eigenvalue statistics of $H$ are considered. We mainly focus on the asymptotic expansion of $\mathbb{E}\{m_N(z)\}$ in this paper. Then for some fine test function, a central limit theor…
In this paper, we investigate the functional central limit theorem for stochastic processes associated to partial sums of additive functionals of reversible Markov chains with general spate space, under the normalization standard deviation of partial sums. For this case, we show that the functional central limit theorem is equivalent to the fact that the variance of partial sums is regularly varying with exponent 1 and the partial sums satisfy the CLT. It is also equivalent to the conditional CLT.
Consider critical percolation in two dimensions. Under the condition that there are k disjoint alternating black and white arms crossing the annulus A(l,n), we prove a central limit theorem and variance estimates for the winding angles of the arms (as n\rightarrow \infty, l fixed). This result confirms a prediction of Beffara and Nolin (Ann. Probab. 39: 1286--1304, 2011). Using this theorem, we also get a CLT for the multiple-armed incipient infinite cluster (IIC) measures.
For $N,n\in\mathbb N$, consider the sample covariance matrix $$S_N(T)=\frac{1}{N}XX^*$$ from a data set $X=C_N^{1/2}ZT_n^{1/2}$, where $Z=(Z_{i,j})$ is a $N\times n$ matrix having i.i.d. entries with mean zero and variance one, and $C_N, T_n$ are deterministic positive semi-definite Hermitian matrices of dimension $N$ and $n$, respectively. We assume that $(C_N)_N$ is bounded in spectral norm, and $T_n$ is a Toeplitz matrix with its largest eigenvalues diverging to infinity. The matrix $X$ can be viewed as a data set of an $N$-dimensional long memory stationary process having separable depende…
In this article, we study the fluctuations of the random variable: $$ {\mathcal I}_n(ρ) = \frac 1N \log\det(Σ_n Σ_n^* + ρI_N),\quad (ρ>0) $$ where $Σ_n= n^{-1/2} D_n^{1/2} X_n\tilde D_n^{1/2} +A_n$, as the dimensions of the matrices go to infinity at the same pace. Matrices $X_n$ and $A_n$ are respectively random and deterministic $N\times n$ matrices; matrices $D_n$ and $\tilde D_n$ are deterministic and diagonal, with respective dimensions $N\times N$ and $n\times n$; matrix $X_n=(X_{ij})$ has centered, independent and identically distributed entries with unit variance, either real or comple…
This paper develops central limit theorems (CLT's) and large deviations results for additive functionals associated with reflecting diffusions in which the functional may include a term associated with the cumulative amount of boundary reflection that has occurred. Extending the known central limit and large deviations theory for Markov processes to include additive functionals that incorporate boundary reflection is important in many applications settings in which reflecting diffusions arise, including queueing theory and economics. In particular, the paper establishes the partial differentia…
Let $\Cal S$ be an abelian group of automorphisms of a probability space $(X, {\Cal A}, μ)$ with a finite system of generators $(A_1, ..., A_d)$. Let $A^{\el}$ denote $A_1^{\ell_1} ... A_d^{\ell_d}$, for ${\el}= (\ell_1, ..., \ell_d)$. If $(Z_k)$ is a random walk on $\Z^d$, one can study the asymptotic distribution of the sums $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} \, f \circ A^{\,{Z_k(ω)}}$ and $\sum_{\el \in \Z^d} \PP(Z_n= \el) \, A^\el f$, for a function $f$ on $X$. In particular, given a random walk on commuting matrices in $SL(ρ, \Z)$ or in ${\Cal M}^*(ρ, \Z)$ acting on the torus $\T^ρ$, $ρ\geq 1$, what is th…
We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-normalized CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the …
We consider a random field, defined on an integer-valued d-dimensional lattice, with covariance function satisfying a condition more general than summability. Such condition appeared in the well-known Newman's conjecture concerning the central limit theorem (CLT) for stationary associated random fields. As was demonstrated by Herrndorf and Shashkin, the conjecture fails already for d=1. In the present paper, we show the validity of modified conjecture leaving intact the mentioned condition on covariance function. Thus we establish, for any positive integer d, a criterion of the CLT validity fo…
We propose some backward-forward martingale decompositions for functions of reversible Markov chains. These decompositions are used to prove the functional CLT for reversible Markov chains with asymptotically linear variance of partial sums. We also provide a proof of the equivalence between asymptotic linearity of the variance and convergence of the integral of $1/(1-t)$ with respect to the associated spectral measure $ρ$. We also study the asymptotic behavior of linear processes having as innovations mean zero square integrable functions of stationary reversible Markov chains. We apply this …
We study random walks on groups with the feature that, roughly speaking, successive positions of the walk tend to be "aligned". We formalize and quantify this property by means of the notion of deviation inequalities. We show that deviation inequalities have several consequences including Central Limit Theorems, the local Lipschitz continuity of the rate of escape and entropy, as well as linear upper and lower bounds on the variance of the distance of the position of the walk from its initial point. In a second part of the paper, we show that the (exponential) deviation inequality holds for me…
We introduce a new version of Stein's method that reduces a large class of normal approximation problems to variance bounding exercises, thus making a connection between central limit theorems and concentration of measure. Unlike Skorokhod embeddings, the object whose variance must be bounded has an explicit formula that makes it possible to carry out the program more easily. As an application, we derive a general CLT for functions that are obtained as combinations of many local contributions, where the definition of "local" itself depends on the data. Several examples are given, including the…
We consider $n\times n$ real symmetric and Hermitian Wigner random matrices $n^{-1/2}W$ with independent (modulo symmetry condition) entries and the (null) sample covariance matrices $n^{-1}X^*X$ with independent entries of $m\times n$ matrix $X$. Assuming first that the 4th cumulant (excess) $κ_4$ of entries of $W$ and $X$ is zero and that their 4th moments satisfy a Lindeberg type condition, we prove that linear statistics of eigenvalues of the above matrices satisfy the central limit theorem (CLT) as $n\to\infty$, $m\to\infty$, $m/n\to c\in[0,\infty)$ with the same variance as for Gaussian …
Let A(n) be a sequence of i.i.d. topical (i.e. isotone and additively homogeneous) operators. Let $x(n,x_0)$ be defined by $x(0,x_0)=x_0$ and $x(n,x_0)=A(n)x(n-1,x_0)$. This can modelize a wide range of systems including, task graphs, train networks, Job-Shop, timed digital circuits or parallel processing systems. When A(n) has the memory loss property, we use the spectral gap method to prove limit theorems for $x(n,x_0)$. Roughly speaking, we show that $x(n,x_0)$ behaves like a sum of i.i.d. real variables. Precisely, we show that with suitable additional conditions, it satisfies a central li…
The deleting items theorems of weak law of large numbers (WLLN),strong law of large numbers (SLLN) and central limit theorem (CLT) are derived by substituting partial sum of random variable sequence with deleting items partial sum. We address the background of deleting items limit theory of random variable sequence, discuss the classical limit theory of Chebyshev WLLN, Bernoulli WLLN and Khinchine WLLN with standard mathematical analytical technique, then develop the deleting items theorems of WLLN, SLLN and CLT based on convergence theorems and Slutsky's theorem. Our theorems extend the class…
In this work, we consider a wide two-layer neural network and study the behavior of its empirical weights under a dynamics set by a stochastic gradient descent along the quadratic loss with mini-batches and noise. Our goal is to prove a trajectorial law of large number as well as a central limit theorem for their evolution. When the noise is scaling as 1/N $β$ and 1/2 < $β$ $\le$ $\infty$, we rigorously derive and generalize the LLN obtained for example in [CRBVE20, MMM19, SS20b]. When 3/4 < $β$ $\le$ $\infty$, we also generalize the CLT (see also [SS20a]) and further exhibit the effect of min…
Consider a $N\times n$ matrix $Σ_n=\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}R_n^{1/2}X_n$, where $R_n$ is a nonnegative definite Hermitian matrix and $X_n$ is a random matrix with i.i.d. real or complex standardized entries. The fluctuations of the linear statistics of the eigenvalues \[\operatorname {Trace}f \bigl(Σ_nΣ_n^*\bigr)=\sum_{i=1}^Nf(λ_i),\qquad (λ_i)\ eigenvalues\ of\ Σ_nΣ_n^*,\] are shown to be Gaussian, in the regime where both dimensions of matrix $Σ_n$ go to infinity at the same pace and in the case where $f$ is of class $C^3$, that is, has three continuous derivatives. The main improvements with resp…

Recent theoretical works have characterized the dynamics of wide shallow neural networks trained via gradient descent in an asymptotic mean-field limit when the width tends towards infinity. At initialization, the random sampling of the parameters leads to deviations from the mean-field limit dictated by the classical Central Limit Theorem (CLT). However, since gradient descent induces correlations among the parameters, it is of interest to analyze how these fluctuations evolve. Here, we use a dynamical CLT to prove that the asymptotic fluctuations around the mean limit remain bounded in mean …
Consider a random vector $\mathbf{y}=\mathbfΣ^{1/2}\mathbf{x}$, where the $p$ elements of the vector $\mathbf{x}$ are i.i.d. real-valued random variables with zero mean and finite fourth moment, and $\mathbfΣ^{1/2}$ is a deterministic $p\times p$ matrix such that the spectral norm of the population correlation matrix $\mathbf{R}$ of $\mathbf{y}$ is uniformly bounded. In this paper, we find that the log determinant of the sample correlation matrix $\hat{\mathbf{R}}$ based on a sample of size $n$ from the distribution of $\mathbf{y}$ satisfies a CLT (central limit theorem) for $p/n\to γ\in (0, 1…
Random hyperspherical harmonics are Gaussian Laplace eigenfunctions on the unit $d$-sphere ($d\ge 2$). We investigate the distribution of their defect i.e., the difference between the measure of positive and negative regions. Marinucci and Wigman studied the two-dimensional case giving the asymptotic variance (Marinucci and Wigman 2011) and a Central Limit Theorem (Marinucci and Wigman 2014), both in the high-energy limit. Our main results concern asymptotics for the defect variance and quantitative CLTs in Wasserstein distance, in any dimension. The proofs are based on Wiener-Itô chaos expans…
Linear statistics of eigenvalues in many familiar classes of random matrices are known to obey gaussian central limit theorems. The proofs of such results are usually rather difficult, involving hard computations specific to the model in question. In this article we attempt to formulate a unified technique for deriving such results via relatively soft arguments. In the process, we introduce a notion of `second order Poincaré inequalities': just as ordinary Poincaré inequalities give variance bounds, second order Poincaré inequalities give central limit theorems. The proof of the main result em…
