In this article, we study the fluctuations of the random variable: $$ {\mathcal I}_n(ρ) = \frac 1N \log\det(Σ_n Σ_n^* + ρI_N),\quad (ρ>0) $$ where $Σ_n= n^{-1/2} D_n^{1/2} X_n\tilde D_n^{1/2} +A_n$, as the dimensions of the matrices go to infinity at the same pace. Matrices $X_n$ and $A_n$ are respectively random and deterministic $N\times n$ matrices; matrices $D_n$ and $\tilde D_n$ are deterministic and diagonal, with respective dimensions $N\times N$ and $n\times n$; matrix $X_n=(X_{ij})$ has centered, independent and identically distributed entries with unit variance, either real or complex.
We prove that when centered and properly rescaled, the random variable ${\mathcal I}_n(ρ)$ satisfies a Central Limit Theorem and has a Gaussian limit. The variance of ${\mathcal I}_n(ρ)$ depends on the moment $\E X_{ij}^2$ of the variables $X_{ij}$ and also on its fourth cumulant $κ= \E|X_{ij}|^4 - 2 - |\E X_{ij}^2|^2$.
The main motivation comes from the field of wireless communications, where ${\mathcal I}_n(ρ)$ represents the mutual information of a multiple antenna radio channel. This article closely follows the companion article "A CLT for Information-theoretic statistics of Gram random matrices with a given variance profile", {\em
Ann. Appl. Probab. (2008)} by Hachem et al., however the study of the fluctuations associated to non-centered large random matrices raises specific issues, which are addressed here.

We analyze the fluctuations of incomplete $U$-statistics over a triangular array of independent random variables. We give criteria for a Central Limit Theorem (CLT, for short) to hold in the sense that we prove that an appropriately scaled and centered version of the U-statistic converges to a normal random variable. Our method of proof relies on a martingale CLT. A possible application -- a CLT for the hitting time for random walk on random graphs -- will be presented in \cite{LoTe20b}
Sample covariance matrices are widely used in multivariate statistical analysis. The central limit theorems (CLT's) for linear spectral statistics of high-dimensional non-centered sample covariance matrices have received considerable attention in random matrix theory and have been applied to many high-dimensional statistical problems. However, known population mean vectors are assumed for non-centered sample covariance matrices, some of which even assume Gaussian-like moment conditions. In fact, there are still another two most frequently used sample covariance matrices: the MLE (by subtractin…
Global and local CLTs for linear spectral statistics of general sample covariance matrices when the dimension is much larger than the sample size with applications
Let $H$ be a real separable Hilbert space and $(a_k)_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ a sequence of bounded linear operators from $H$ to $H$. We consider the linear process $X$ defined for any $k$ in $\mathbb{Z}$ by $X_k=\sum_{j\in\mathbb{Z}}a_j(\varepsilon_{k-j})$ where $(\varepsilon_k)_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ is a sequence of i.i.d. centered $H$-valued random variables. We investigate the rate of convergence in the CLT for $X$ and in particular we obtain the usual Berry-Esseen's bound provided that $\sum_{j\in\mathbb{Z}}\vert j\vert\|a_j\|_{\mathcal{L}(H)}<+\infty$ and $\varepsilon_0$ belongs to $L_H^{\infty}$.
We prove abstract bounds on the Wasserstein and Kolmogorov distances between non-randomly centered random sums of real i.i.d. random variables with a finite third moment and the standard normal distribution. Except for the case of mean zero summands, these bounds involve a coupling of the summation index with its size biased distribution as was previously considered in \cite{GolRin96} for the normal approximation of nonnegative random variables. When being specialized to concrete distributions of the summation index like the Binomial, Poisson and Hypergeometric distribution, our bounds turn ou…
For large dimensional non-Hermitian random matrices $X$ with real or complex independent, identically distributed, centered entries, we consider the fluctuations of $f(X)$ as a matrix where $f$ is an analytic function around the spectrum of $X$. We prove that for a generic bounded square matrix $A$, the quantity $\mathrm{Tr}f(X)A$ exhibits Gaussian fluctuations as the matrix size grows to infinity, which consists of two independent modes corresponding to the tracial and traceless parts of $A$. We find a new formula for the variance of the traceless part that involves the Frobenius norm of $A$ …
In previous papers, we studied the asymptotic behaviour of $S_N(A,X)=(2N+1)^{-d/2}\sum_{n \in A_N} X_n,$ where $X$ is a centered, stationary and weakly dependent random field, and $A_N=A \cap [-N,N]^d$, $A \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$. This leads to the definition of asymptotically measurable sets, which enjoy the property that $S_N(A;X)$ has a Gaussian weak limit for any $X$ belonging to a certain class. Here we extend this type of results to the case of weakly dependent triangular arrays and present an application of this technique to regression models. Indeed, we prove that CLT and related results…
We prove, for any $β>0$, a central limit theorem for the fluctuations of linear statistics in the Sine-$β$ process, which is the infinite volume limit of the random microscopic behavior in the bulk of one-dimensional log-gases at inverse temperature $β$. If $ϕ$ is a compactly supported test function of class $C^4$, and $\mathcal{C}$ is a random point configuration distributed according to Sine-$β$, the integral of $ϕ(\cdot / \ell)$ against the random fluctuation $d\mathcal{C} - dx$, converges in law, as $\ell$ goes to infinity, to a centered normal random variable whose standard deviation is p…
We study dynamical systems arising as time-dependent compositions of Pomeau-Manneville-type intermittent maps. We establish central limit theorems for appropriately scaled and centered Birkhoff-like partial sums, with estimates on the rate of convergence. For maps chosen from a certain parameter range, but without additional assumptions on how the maps vary with time, we obtain a self-normalized CLT provided that the variances of the partial sums grow sufficiently fast. When the maps are chosen randomly according to a shift-invariant probability measure, we identify conditions under which the …
For $k,m,n\in \mathbb{N}$, we consider $n^k\times n^k$ random matrices of the form $$ \mathcal{M}_{n,m,k}(\mathbf{y})=\sum_{α=1}^mτ_α{Y_α}Y_α^T,\quad Y_α=\mathbf{y}_α^{(1)}\otimes...\otimes\mathbf{y}_α^{(k)}, $$ where $τ_{α}$, $α\in[m]$, are real numbers and $\mathbf{y}_α^{(j)}$, $α\in[m]$, $j\in[k]$, are i.i.d. copies of a normalized isotropic random vector $\mathbf{y}\in \mathbb{R}^n$. For every fixed $k\ge 1$, if the Normalized Counting Measures of $\{τ_{α}\}_α$ converge weakly as $m,n\rightarrow \infty$, $m/n^k\rightarrow c\in \lbrack 0,\infty )$ and $\mathbf{y}$ is a good vector in the se…
In the present paper, we study central limit theorems (CLTs) for non-symmetric random walks on nilpotent covering graphs from a point of view of discrete geometric analysis developed by Kotani and Sunada. We establish a semigroup CLT for a non-symmetric random walk on a nilpotent covering graph. Realizing the nilpotent covering graph into a nilpotent Lie group through a discrete harmonic map, we give a geometric characterization of the limit semigroup on the nilpotent Lie group. More precisely, we show that the limit semigroup is generated by the sub-Laplacian with a non-trivial drift on the n…
For large random matrices $X$ with independent, centered entries but not necessarily identical variances, the eigenvalue density of $XX^*$ is well-approximated by a deterministic measure on $\mathbb{R}$. We show that the density of this measure has only square and cubic-root singularities away from zero. We also extend the bulk local law in [arXiv:1606.07353] to the vicinity of these singularities.
We prove a local law in the bulk of the spectrum for random Gram matrices $XX^*$, a generalization of sample covariance matrices, where $X$ is a large matrix with independent, centered entries with arbitrary variances. The limiting eigenvalue density that generalizes the Marchenko-Pastur law is determined by solving a system of nonlinear equations. Our entrywise and averaged local laws are on the optimal scale with the optimal error bounds. They hold both in the square case (hard edge) and in the properly rectangular case (soft edge). In the latter case we also establish a macroscopic gap away…
Consider a matrix $Σ_n$ with random independent entries, each non-centered with a separable variance profile. In this article, we study the limiting behavior of the random bilinear form $u_n^* Q_n(z) v_n$, where $u_n$ and $v_n$ are deterministic vectors, and Q_n(z) is the resolvent associated to $Σ_n Σ_n^*$ as the dimensions of matrix $Σ_n$ go to infinity at the same pace. Such quantities arise in the study of functionals of $Σ_n Σ_n^*$ which do not only depend on the eigenvalues of $Σ_n Σ_n^*$, and are pivotal in the study of problems related to non-centered Gram matrices such as central limi…
In this paper, we investigate the local universality of the number of zeros of a random periodic signal of the form $S_n(t)=\sum_{k=1}^n a_k f(k t)$, where $f$ is a $2π-$periodic function satisfying weak regularity conditions and where the coefficients $a_k$ are i.i.d. random variables, that are centered with unit variance. In particular, our results hold for continuous piecewise linear functions. We prove that the number of zeros of $S_n(t)$ in a shrinking interval of size $1/n$ converges in law as $n$ goes to infinity to the number of zeros of a Gaussian process whose explicit covariance onl…
On a probability space $(Ω, \mathcal F, \mathbb P)$ we consider two independent sequences $(a_k)_{k \geq 1}$ and $(b_k)_{k \geq 1}$ of i.i.d. random variables that are centered with unit variance and which admit a moment strictly higher than two. We define the associated random trigonometric polynomial \[ f_n(t) :=\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}} \sum_{k=1}^n a_k \cos(kt)+b_k \sin(kt), \quad t \in \mathbb R. \] In their seminal work, for Rademacher coefficients, Salem and Zygmund showed that $\mathbb P$ almost surely: \[ \forall t\in\mathbb R,\quad \frac{1}{2π}\int_{0}^{2π} \exp\left(i t f_n(x)\right) dx \x…
