We present a comprehensive analysis of the $γW$ interference radiative correction to the neutron $β$-decay matrix element. Within a dispersion relations approach, we compute the axial-vector part of the $γW$ box amplitude $\Box^{γW}_{A}$ in terms of the isoscalar part of the $F_3^{γW}$ interference structure function. Using the latest available phenomenology for $F_3^{γW}$ from the nucleon elastic, resonance, deep-inelastic, and Regge regions, we find the real part of the box correction to be $\Box^{γW}_A = 3.90(9) \times 10^{-3}$. This improved correction gives a theoretical estimate of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ud}|^2=0.94805(26)$, which represents a 4$σ$ violation of unitarity.
The angle $γ$ of the standard CKM unitarity triangle can be determined from tree-level $B$-meson decays essentially without hadronic uncertainties. We calculate the second-order electroweak corrections for the $B \to D π$ modes and show that their impact on the determination of $γ$ could be enhanced by an accidental cancellation of poorly known hadronic matrix elements. However, we do not expect the resulting shift in $γ$ to exceed $\big|δγ^{Dπ} /γ\big| \lesssim {\mathcal O}\big(10^{-4}\big)$.
The first principle derivation of kinetic transport equations suggests that a CP-violating mass term during the electroweak phase transition can induce axial vector currents. Since the important terms are of first order in gradients there is a possibility to construct new rephasing invariants that are proportional to the CP phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and to circumvent the upper bound of CP-violating contributions in the Standard Model, the Jarlskog invariant. Qualitative arguments are given that these new contributions still fail to explain electroweak baryogenesis in extens…
The unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix has been well established by both direct and indirect measurements without any evidence of discrepancy. The CKM weak phase $α$ is directly measured using an isospin analysis in $B\rightarrow ππ$ and $B\to ρρ$ assuming that electroweak penguin contributions are ignorable. However, electroweak penguins are sensitive to NP, hence, it is important to experimentally estimate their effects. We determine the size of both electroweak penguin and isospin amplitudes, directly from $B\rightarrow ππ$ and $B\to ρρ$ experimental data, using in addi…
The Fermi constant ($G_F$) is extremely well measured through the muon lifetime, defining one of the key fundamental parameters in the Standard Model (SM). Therefore, to search for physics beyond the SM (BSM) via $G_F$, the constraining power is determined by the precision of the second-best independent determination of $G_F$. The best alternative extractions of $G_F$ proceed either via the global electroweak (EW) fit or from superallowed $β$ decays in combination with the Cabibbo angle measured in kaon, $τ$, or $D$ decays. Both variants display some tension with $G_F$ from muon decay, albeit …
We show that the CKM matrix can be the source of CP violation for electroweak baryogenesis if Yukawa couplings vary at the same time as the Higgs acquires its vacuum expectation value. This offers new avenues for explaining the baryon asymmetry of the universe. These ideas apply if the mechanism explaining the flavour structure of the Standard Model is connected to electroweak symmetry breaking. We compute the resulting baryon asymmetry for various low-scale flavour models and different configurations of the Yukawa coupling variation across the bubble wall, and show that it can naturally be of…
Rare $B$, $D$ and $K$ decays provide interesting probes of the Standard Model (SM), with a potential sensitivity to New Physics (NP) higher than other, more common, decays. Their experimental measurement is challenging, and their theoretical interpretation requires a precise knowledge of QCD at low energies, in the non-perturbative (hadronic) regime. The various $b$, $c$, $s$ decays provide different types of tests of the Standard Model, which can be performed in different experimental settings and which may exhibit correlated deviations in models of New Physics.
Limits on the Higgs boson mass restrict CKM mixing of a possible fourth family beyond the constraints previously obtained from precision electroweak data alone. Existing experimental and theoretical bounds on the Higgs mass already significantly restrict the allowed parameter space. Zero CKM mixing is excluded and mixing of order the Cabibbo angle is allowed. Upper and lower limits on 3-4 CKM mixing are exhibited as a function of the Higgs mass. We use the default inputs of the Electroweak Working Group and also explore the sensitivity of both the three and four family fits to alternative inpu…
CKM matrix is unitary by construction in the standard model(SM). The recent analyses on the first row of CKM matrix show $ \approx 3σ$ tension with unitarity. Nonperturbative calculations of the radiative corrections can reduce the theory uncertainty in CKM matrix elements. Here we compute the electroweak box contribution to the pion and kaon $β$ decays using seven $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ-Clover lattice with various pion mass and lattice spacing. The continuum and chiral limit is taken using the leading dependence on $M_π$ and $a$, where $M_π$ extrapolation is taken to the physical pion mass and $SU(…
In this presentation we clarify some aspects of the LSZ formalism and wave function renormalization for unstable particles in the presence of electroweak interactions when mixing and CP violation are considered. We also analyze the renormalization of the CKM mixing matrix which is closely related to wave function renormalization. The effects due to the electroweak radiative corrections that are described in this work are small, but they will need to be considered when the precision in the measurement of the charged current sector couplings reaches the 1% level. The work presented here is done …
A general parametrization of the $B^+\toπ^+ K^0$ and $B_d^0\toπ^- K^+$ decay amplitudes is presented. It relies only on the isospin symmetry of strong interactions and the phase structure of the Standard Model and involves no approximations. In particular, this parametrization takes into account both rescattering and electroweak penguin effects, which limit the theoretical accuracy of bounds on $γ$ arising from the combined $B^\pm\toπ^\pm K$, $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$ branching ratios. Generalized bounds making also use of the CP asymmetry in the latter decay are derived, and their sensitivity to po…
A new method for computing hadronic effects on electroweak radiative corrections to low-energy weak interaction semileptonic processes is described. It employs high order perturbative QCD results originally derived for the Bjorken sum rule along with a large N QCD-motivated interpolating function that matches long and short-distance loop contributions. Applying this approach to the extraction of the CKM matrix element V_ud from superallowed nuclear beta decays reduces the theoretical loop uncertainty by about a factor of 2 and gives V_ud = 0.97377(11)(15)(19). Implications for CKM unitarity ar…
The 3 X 3 CKM matrix defines six unitarity triangles in the complex plane, which will be carefully explored in the LHCb experiment and at the Super-B factory. We calculate the running effects of nine different inner angles and eighteen different sides of the six triangles from the electroweak scale to a superhigh-energy scale by using the one-loop renormalization-group equations, and demonstrate that all the nine angles are stable against radiative corrections. In particular, we find that the CP-violating angle αis most insensitive to the changes of energy scales.
The decays $B^\pm\to π^\pm K$ and $B_d\to π^\mp K^\pm$ were observed by the CLEO collaboration last year; they may play an important role to probe the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix. After a general parametrization of their decay amplitudes within the Standard Model, strategies to constrain and determine the CKM angle $γ$ with the help of the corresponding CP-conserving and CP-violating observables are briefly reviewed. The theoretical accuracy of these methods is limited by certain rescattering and electroweak penguin effects. It is emphasized that the rescattering proc…
The determination of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle of the CKM matrix is regarded as a challenge for future $B$-physics experiments. In this context, the decays $B^\pm\to π^\pm K$ and $B_d\toπ^\mp K^\pm$, which were observed by the CLEO collaboration last year, received a lot of interest in the literature. After a general parametrization of their decay amplitudes, strategies to constrain and determine the CKM angle $γ$ with the help of the corresponding observables are reviewed. The theoretical accuracy of these methods is limited by certain rescattering and electroweak penguin effect…
We derive the Feynman rules of the standard model in the axial gauge. After this we prove that the fields $ϕ_W$ and $ϕ_Z$ do not correspond to physical particles. As a consequence, these fields cannot appear as incoming or outgoing lines in Feynman graphs. We then calculate the contribution of these fields in the case of a particular decay mode of the top quark.
Schemes for fermion masses should predict elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. We review the freedom allowed by present experiments and how the parameter space will shrink in the next few years. In addition to experiments which directly affect CKM parameters, we discuss constraints arising from precise electroweak tests.
CKM mixing between third family quarks and a possible fourth family is constrained by global fits to the precision electroweak data. The dominant constraint is from nondecoupling oblique corrections rather than the Zbb vertex correction used in previous analyses. The possibility of large mixing suggested by some recent analyses of FCNC processes is excluded, but 3-4 mixing of the same order as the Cabbibo mixing of the first two families is allowed.
The aim of the paper is to propose one paradigm change of CKM global fits on experimental data from electroweak sector. The change refers to using in fits the exact unitarity constraints expressed in terms of four invariant parameters, such as moduli of the CKM matrix, and to take into account an important set of the available experimental data. In the paper we use data from nuclear beta decays, and from leptonic and semileptonic decays, in order to find the most probable numerical form of the CKM matrix, as well as the determination of decay constants, $f_{P}$, and of various form factors $f_…
We analyze the degree to which parity-violating (PV) electroexcitation of the $Δ(1232)$ resonance may be used to extract the weak neutral axial vector transition form factors. We find that the axial vector electroweak radiative corrections are large and theoretically uncertain, thereby modifying the nominal interpretation of the PV asymmetry in terms of the weak neutral form factors. We also show that, in contrast to the situation for elastic electron scattering, the axial $N\toΔ$ PV asymmetry does not vanish at the photon point as a consequence of a new term entering the radiative corrections…

We show that in the presence of large scale primordial hypermagnetic fields, it is possible to generate an axial asymmetry for a first order electroweak phase transition. This happens during the reflection and transmission of fermions off the true vacuum bubbles, due to the chiral nature of the fermion coupling with the background field in the symmetric phase. We derive and solve the Dirac equation for such fermions and compute the reflection and transmission coefficients for the case when these fermions move from the symmetric to the symmetry broken phase. We also comment on the possible impl…
The "Cabibbo Angle Anomaly" (CAA) originates from the disagreement between the CKM elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ extracted from superallowed beta and kaon decays, respectively, once compared via CKM unitarity. It points towards new physics with a significance of up to $4\,σ$, depending on the theoretical input used, and can be explained through modified $W$ couplings to leptons. In this context, vector-like leptons (VLLs) are prime candidates for a corresponding UV completion since they can affect $W\ellν$ couplings at tree-level, such that this modification can have the dominant phenomenolog…
We study the scattering of fermions off the true vacuum bubbles nucleated during a first order electroweak phase transition in the presence of a background hypermagnetic field. By considering the limit of an infinitely thin bubble wall, we derive and analytically solve the Dirac equation in three spatial dimensions for left and right chirality modes and compute reflection and transmission coefficients for the case when the fermions move from the symmetric toward the broken symmetry phase. Given the chiral nature of the fermion coupling with the background field in the symmetric phase, an axial…
We present a new technique to extract information on the Unitarity Triangle from the study of B -> K pi pi Dalitz plots. Using the sensitivity of Dalitz analyses to the absolute values and the phases of decay amplitudes and isospin symmetry, we obtain a new constraint on the elements of the CKM matrix. We discuss in detail the role of electroweak penguins and outline future prospects.
We look for relations among CKM matrix elements that are not consequences of the Wolfenstein parametrization. In particular, we search for products of CKM elements raised to integer powers that approximately equal $1$. We study the running of the CKM matrix elements and resolve an apparent discrepancy in the literature. To a good approximation only $A$ runs, among the Wolfenstein parameters. Using the Standard Model renormalization group we look for CKM relations at energy scales ranging from the electroweak scale to the Planck scale, and we find 19 such relations. These relations could point …
We have calculated the one-loop electroweak corrections to the decay t-> bW+, including the counterterm for the CKM matrix elements V(tb). Previous calculations used an incorrect delta V(tb) that led to a gauge dependent amplitude. However, since the contribution stemming from delta V(tb) is small, those calculations only underestimate the width by roughly one part in 10^5.
The phenomenon of CP violation in the B system and strategies for extracting CKM phases are reviewed. We focus both on general aspects and on some recent developments including CP-violating asymmetries in B_d decays, the B_s system in light of a possible width difference $ΔΓ_s$, charged B decays, and SU(3) relations among certain transition amplitudes. In order to describe the relevant non-leptonic B decays, low energy effective Hamiltonians calculated beyond the leading logarithmic approximation are used. Special emphasis is given to the role of electroweak penguin operators in such transitio…
We suggest a specific semiclassical background field, the so called pure gauge sphaleron explosion, to evaluate the magnitude of the CP violation stemming from the standard phase of the CKM matrix. We use it to evaluate the matrix elements of some next-to-leading order effective CP-violating operators suggested in the literature. We also derive the scale dependence of the corresponding coefficients. Finally, we discuss the expected magnitude of the CP violation in the cold electroweak scenario.
We present arguments that the CKM CP-violation in the standard model may be sufficient for the generation of the baryon asymmetry, if the electroweak transition in the early universe was of the cold, tachyonic, type after electroweak-scale inflation. A model implementing this is described which complies with the CMB constraints and which is falsifiable with the LHC. Numerical simulations of the tachyonic transition with an effective CP-bias indicate that the observed baryon asymmetry can be generated this way.
We study Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) favored weak decays of Bc mesons in the Isgur-Scora-Grinstein-Wise (ISGW) quark model. We present a detailed analysis of the Bc meson decaying to a pseudoscalar meson (P) and an axial-vector meson (A). We also give the form factors involving transition in the ISGW II framework and consequently, predict the branching ratios of decays.
We investigate the imaginary parts of the nucleon electromagnetic and axial form factors close to threshold in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. For the isovector electromagnetic form factors, we recover the well known strong enhancement near threshold. For the isoscalar ones, we show that there is no visible enhancement due to the three--pion continuum. This justifies the use of vector meson poles only in dispersion--theoretical calculations. We also calculate the imaginary part of the nucleon isovector axial form factor and show that it is small in the threshold regio…
We present a top-condensation model in which the CP symmetry is spontaneously broken at the electroweak scale due to the condensation of two composite Higgs doublets. In particular the CP-violating phase of the CKM matrix is generated. A simpler model where only one quark family is included is also discussed. In this case, for a general four-fermion interaction ($G_{tb}\neq 0$), the particle spectrum is the one of the one Higgs doublet model.
We present a lattice QCD calculation of the axial $γW$-box diagrams relevant for the kaon semileptonic decays. We utilize a recently proposed method, which connects the electroweak radiative corrections in Sirlin's representation to that in chiral perturbation theory. It allows us to use the axial $γW$-box correction in the SU(3) limit to obtain the low energy constants for chiral perturbation theory. From first principles our results confirm the previously used low energy constants provided by the minimal resonance model with a significant reduction in uncertainties.
The matrix element \Vud of the CKM matrix can be determined by two independent measurements in neutron decay: the neutron lifetime $τ_n$ and the ratio of coupling constants $λ=g_A/g_V$, which is most precisely determined by measurements of the beta asymmetry angular correlation coefficient~$A$. We present recent progress on the determination of these coupling constants.
A semi-empirical formula for the electroweak response functions in the two-nucleon emission channel is proposed. The method consists in expanding each one of the vector-vector, axial-axial and vector-axial responses as sums of six sub-responses. These corresponds to separating the meson-exchange currents as the sum of three currents of similar structure, and expanding the hadronic tensor, as the sum of the separate contributions from each current plus the interferences between them. For each sub-response we factorize the coupling constants, the electroweak form factors, the phase space and the…
We study the decays of heavy chiral (t', b') quarks in a four-generation extension of the Standard Model. If the difference between the t' and b' masses is smaller than the W mass, as favored by precision electroweak measurements, then the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa favored, on-shell decay t'-->b'W is forbidden. As a result, other t' decays have substantial branching fractions, which are highly sensitive to the magnitude of the diagonal CKM matrix element V_{t'b'}. We show that |V_{t'b'}| can be determined from the ratio of the two-body and three-body t'-decay branching fractions and estimate t…
S3 models offer a low energy approach to describe the observed pattern of masses and mixing, of both quarks and leptons. In this work, we first revisit an S3 model with only one Higgs electroweak doublet, where the flavour symmetry must be broken in order to produce an acceptable pattern of masses and mixing for fermions. Then, we analyse different S3 models, where the flavour symmetry is preserved as an exact, but hidden symmetry of the low energy spectra, after the electroweak symmetry breaking. The latter models require the addition of two more Higgs electroweak doublets which are accommoda…
We describe the computation of the $\mathcal{O}(α^3)$ corrections for single top (and single anti-top) production in the $t$-channel at hadron colliders. We show also The genuine one loop SUSY contribution to these processes. Such contributions are generally quite modest in the mSUGRA scenario. The experimental observables would therefore only practically depend, in this framework, on the CKM $Wtb$ coupling.
We analyze the Nelson-Barr approach to the Strong CP Problem. We derive the necessary conditions in order to simultaneously reproduce the CKM phase and the quark masses. Then we quantify the irreducible contributions to the QCD topological angle, namely the corrections arising from loops of the colored fermion mediators that characterize these models. Corrections analytic in the couplings first arise at 3-loop order and are safely below current bounds; non-analytic effects are 2-loop order and decouple as the mediators exceed a few TeV. We discuss collider, electroweak, and flavor bounds and a…
It is found that in presence of electroweak interactions the gauge covariant diagonalization of the axial-vector -- pseudoscalar mixing in the effective meson Lagrangian leads to a deviation from the vector meson and the axial-vector meson dominance of the entire hadronic electroweak current. The essential features of such a modification of the theory are investigated in the framework of the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with explicit breaking of chiral $U(2) \times U(2)$ symmetry. The Schwinger-DeWitt method is used as a major tool in our study of the real part of the relevant effective a…
We present a Scan Method analysis of the allowed region of the rho bar - eta bar plane using the latest input measurements of the CKM matrix elements, sin 2 beta, B0(s,d) mixing, epsilon(K), alpha and gamma. In this approach, we make no assumptions as to the distribution of theory uncertainties; rather, we scan over the range of plausible theoretical uncertainties and determine confidence level contours in the rho bar eta bar plane. We determine alpha from branching fraction and CP asymmetry measurements of B decays to all light pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar, pesudoscalar-vector, vector-vector and…
Determinations of the CKM phase $γ$ from weak nonleptonic $B$ decays are affected by electroweak (EW) penguins and rescattering effects. In this talk it is explained how the EW penguin effects can be controlled with the help of SU(3) symmetry, by relating them to tree-level amplitudes. The impact of the final-state interactions on the determination of $γ$ from $B^+\to Kπ$ decays is studied numerically, showing that they can be important. A few alternative methods are discussed which use additional decays to eliminate their effects.
We update the profile of the CKM matrix. The apex (rhobar, etabar) of the Unitarity Triangle is given by means of a global fit. We propose to include therein sin2alpha from the CP-violating asymmetries in B0->rho+rho-, using isospin to discriminate the penguin contribution. The constraint from epsilon'/epsilon is briefly discussed. We study the impact from the measurement of the rare decay K+->pi+nunu-bar, and from a future observation of KL->pi0nunubar. The B system is investigated in detail, beginning with 2beta+gamma and gamma from B0->D(*)+-pi-+ and B+->D(*)0K+. A significant part of this p…
We compute the leading-log QED, the next-to-leading-log QED-QCD, and the electroweak corrections to the charm quark contribution relevant for the rare decay K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar. The corresponding parameter P_c(X) is increased by up to 2% with respect to the pure QCD estimate to P_c(X) = 0.372 +- 0.015 for m_c(m_c)= (1.286 +- 0.013) GeV, alphas(M_Z) = 0.1176 +- 0.0020 and |V_us| = 0.2255. For the branching ratio we find B(K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar) = (8.5 +- 0.7)*10^{-11}, where the quoted uncertainty is dominated by the CKM elements.
The relativistic constituent quark model of low-energy quantum chromodynamics is found to yield a consistent picture of the electroweak structure of the nucleons. Notably, the electromagnetic and axial form factors of both the proton and the neutron can be described in close agreement with existing experimental data in the domain of low to moderate momentum transfers. For the theory it is mandatory to respect Poincare invariance and to fulfill additional conditions like charge normalization. Here we present covariant predictions of the one-gluon-exchange and Goldstone-boson-exchange constituen…
We study the scattering of fermions off a finite width kink wall during the electroweak phase transition in the presence of a background hypermagnetic field. We derive and solve the Dirac equation for such fermions and compute the reflection and transmission coefficients for the case when the fermions move from the symmetric to the broken symmetry phase. We show that the chiral nature of the fermion coupling with the background field in the symmetric phase generates an axial asymmetry in the scattering processes. We discuss possible implications of such axial charge segregation for baryon numb…
Two loop electroweak corrections to b --> s gamma decays are computed. Fermion and photonic loop effects are found to reduce R = BR(b --> s gamma)/BR(b --> c e nu) by 8+-2% and lead to the standard model prediction BR(B --> X_s gamma)=(3.28 +- 0.30)x10^-4 for inclusive B meson decays. Comparison of R^{theory} =(3.04 +- 0.25)x10^-3(1+0.10rho), where rho is a Wolfenstein CKM parameter, with the current experimental average R^{exp}=(2.52+-0.52)x10^-3 gives rho=-1.7+-1.9 which is consistent with -0.21<rho<0.27 obtained from other B and K physics constraints.
The phenomenology at future hadron colliders of a model with strong interacting vector and axial vector bosons possessing a discrete symmetry demanding mass degeneracy is presented.
The contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the fermion triangle loop diagrams connected to the muon line by a photon and a $Z$ boson is reanalyzed in the unitary gauge. With use of the anomalous axial-vector Ward identity, it is shown that the calculation in the unitary gauge exactly coincides with the one in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. The part which arises from the ordinary axial-vector Ward identity corresponds to the contribution of the neutral Goldstone boson. For the top-quark contribution, the one-parameter integral form is obtained up to the order of $m_μ^2/m_Z^2$. The…
In this publication electroweak next-to-leading order corrections to semileptonic B-meson decays into (pseudo)scalar final states are presented. To this end, these corrections of O(alpha G_F) have been calculated in the QED-enhanced phenomenological model, incorporating the bound-state mesons as its degrees of freedom, and matched to a similar calculation on the level of constituent partons in the full Standard Model. Consequently, the effects arising due to corrections of the partial decay widths on the extraction of the CKM matrix elements |V_cb| and |V_ub| are detailed. Further, the results…
