The "Cabibbo Angle Anomaly" (CAA) originates from the disagreement between the CKM elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ extracted from superallowed beta and kaon decays, respectively, once compared via CKM unitarity. It points towards new physics with a significance of up to $4\,σ$, depending on the theoretical input used, and can be explained through modified $W$ couplings to leptons. In this context, vector-like leptons (VLLs) are prime candidates for a corresponding UV completion since they can affect $W\ellν$ couplings at tree-level, such that this modification can have the dominant phenomenological impact. In order to consistently asses the agreement with the data, a global fit is necessary which we perform for gauge-invariant dimension-6 operators and all patterns obtained for the six possible representations (under the SM gauge group) of VLLs. We find that even in the lepton flavour universal case, including the measurements of the CKM elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$ into the electroweak fit has a relevant impact, shifting the best fit point significantly. Concerning the VLLs we discuss the bounds from charged lepton flavour violating processes and observe that a single representation cannot describe experimental data significantly better than the SM hypothesis. However, allowing for several representations of VLLs at the same time, we find that the simple scenario in which $N$ couples to electrons via the Higgs and $Σ_1$ couples to muons not only explains the CAA but also improves the rest of the electroweak fit in such a way that its best fit point is preferred by more than $4\,σ$ with respect to the SM.
Quark-lepton unification suggests Cabibbo-sized effects in lepton mixings, which we call Cabibbo haze. We give simple examples and explore possible Wolfenstein-like parametrizations of the MNSP matrix which incorporate leptonic Cabibbo shifts. We find that the size of the CHOOZ angle is not always correlated with the observability of CP violation.
We explore the hypothesis that the Cabibbo angle is an expansion parameter for lepton as well as quark mixing. Cabibbo effects are deviations from zero mixing for the quarks but are deviations from unknown mixings for the leptons, such that lepton mixing is veiled by a Cabibbo haze. We present a systematic classification of parametrizations and catalog the leading order Cabibbo effects. We find that the size of the CHOOZ angle is not always correlated with the observability of CP violation. This phenomenological approach has practical merit both as a method for organizing top-down flavor model…
The singly charged $SU(2)_L$ singlet scalar, with its necessarily flavour violating couplings to leptons, lends itself particularly well for an explanation of the Cabibbo Angle Anomaly and of hints for lepton flavour universality violation in $τ\to μ\bar νν$. In a setup addressing both anomalies, we predict loop-induced effects in $τ\to eγ$ and in $τ\to eμμ$. A recast of ATLAS selectron and smuon searches allows us to derive a coupling-independent lower limit of $\approx 200$ GeV on the mass of the singly charged singlet scalar. At a future $e^+e^-$ collider, dark matter mono-photon searches c…
Significant discrepancies between the different determinations of the Cabibbo angle have been observed. Here, we point out that this "Cabibbo-angle anomaly" can be explained by lepton flavour universality (LFU) violating New Physics (NP) in the neutrino sector. However, modified neutrino couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons also affect many other observables sensitive to LFU violation, which have to be taken into account in order to assess the viability of this explanation. Therefore, we perform a model-independent Bayesian global analysis and find that non-zero modifications of electron a…
A model-independent ansatz to describe lepton and quark mixing in a unified way is suggested based upon the Cabibbo angle. In our framework neutrinos mix in a "Bi-Large" fashion, while the charged leptons mix as the "down-type" quarks do. In addition to the standard Wolfenstein parameters (lambda, A) two other free parameters are needed to specify the physical lepton mixing matrix. Through this simple assumption one makes specific predictions for the atmospheric angle as well as leptonic CP violation in good agreement with current observations.
It has been shown that the Cabibbo angle can be predicted in terms of group theoretical quantities, if the dihedral group D14 plays the role of a flavor symmetry. We extend a supersymmetric D14 model to the lepton sector and show that theta^nu_13 and the deviation of theta^nu_23 from maximal mixing in the neutrino sector originate, similar to the Cabibbo angle in the quark sector, from a mismatch of different subgroups of D14 and are of the size of the Cabibbo angle. The mixing angles in the charged lepton sector are small. Thus, the lepton mixing angle theta^l_13 is naturally in its experimen…
There is a newly emerging tension between determinations of $V_{us}$ from different sources (known as the Cabibbo anomaly), which is clearly demonstrated by the new $R(V_{us})$ observable. We explore this observable from the perspective of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory and show there is a discrepancy between $R(V_{us})$ and existing electroweak precision observables (EWPO) in a simple single operator dominated scenario. We explore all possible single particle extensions of the Standard Model that can generate the Cabibbo anomaly effect and show how they cannot reconcile the current…
In this work radiative corrections in the total hadronic decay rate of the tau-lepton and some moments of its differential distributions are studied employing perturbative QCD and the operator product expansion. We calculate quadratic quark mass corrections in the strange mass to the decay rate ratio R_tau to the order O(α_s^3 m^2) and find that they contribute appreciably to the Cabibbo suppressed decay modes of the tau-lepton. Using the results of a recent experimental analysis, we obtain m_s(1 GeV) = 200 \pm 40_exp \pm 30_th MeV.
We phenomenologically build a neutrino mass matrix obeying $μ-τ$ symmetry with only two parameters, Cabibbo angle $(λ)$ and a flavour twister parameter $(η)$. For vanishing $η$, the model assumes TBM mixing. When $η=λ$, the model generates a solar mixing angle and solar mass squared difference that coincide with the experimental best-fits. It motivates us to propose a mixing matrix in the neutrino sector with $ sinθ_{12}<\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}$, $θ_{13}=0$ and $θ_{23}=π/4$. The corrections in $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ are conducted following the breaking of $μ-τ$ symmetry, by choosing a proper unitary…
We propose a mechanism that allows for sizeable flavour violation in quark-lepton currents, while suppressing flavour changing neutral currents in quark-quark and lepton-lepton sectors. The mechanism is applied to the recently proposed 4321 renormalizable model, which can accommodate the current experimental anomalies in $B$-meson decays, both in charged and neutral currents, while remaining consistent with all other indirect flavour and electroweak precision measurements and direct searches at high-$p_T$. To support this claim, we present an exhaustive phenomenological survey of this fully ca…
The first row of the Cabibbo-Cobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix shows a discrepancy of $\sim $$3\,σ$ with unitarity, known as the "Cabibbo Angle Anomaly" (CAA). This tension can be explained via modified $W$ couplings to leptons, but in order to consistently assess the validity of this solution, a global fit including the electroweak (EW) precision constraints and the low energy tests of lepton flavour universality (LFU) is necessary. Performing such a fit for gauge-invariant dimension-6 operators, we find that even when assuming LFU, including the CKM elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$ into the elect…
In addition to the existing strong indications for lepton flavour university violation (LFUV) in low energy precision experiments, CMS recently released an analysis of non-resonant di-lepton pairs which could constitute the first sign of LFUV in high-energy LHC searches. In this article we show that the Cabibbo angle anomaly, an (apparent) violation of first row and column CKM unitarity with $\approx3\,σ$ significance, and the CMS result can be correlated and commonly explained in a model independent way by the operator $[Q_{\ell q}^{(3)}]_{1111} = (\bar{\ell}_1γ^μσ^I\ell_1)(\bar{q}_1γ_μσ^Iq_1…
We show that the Cabibbo angle theta\_c satisfies the relation tan(2 theta\_c)=-+/- 1/2 when universality for diagonal neutral currents of mass eigenstates is satisfied at the same level of accuracy as the absence of their off-diagonal counterparts. The predicted value is cos theta\_c \approx 0.9732, only 7/10000 away from experimental results. No mass ratio appears in the calculation. theta\_c occurs a priori for both quark species, and, showing that one recovers the standard dependence of leptonic and semi-leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons, we advocate, like for neutrinos and charged le…
We present neutrino mass matrix textures in a minimal framework of the type-I seesaw mechanism where two right-handed Majorana neutrinos are introduced in order to reproduce experimental results of neutrino oscillations. The textures can lead to experimentally favored leptonic mixing angles described by the tri-bimaximal mixing with one additional rotation. We present minimal and next to minimal textures for the normal mass hierarchy case in a context of the texture zero. A minimal texture in the inverted hierarchy case is also constructed, which does not have any vanishing entries in a Dirac …
Recent measurements of the lepton mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by the Daya Bay and RENO reactor experiments are consistent with the relationship $θ_{13}\approx θ_C/\sqrt{2}$ where $ θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle. We propose Tri-bimaximal-Cabibbo (TBC) mixing, in which $\sin θ_{13}= \sin θ_C/\sqrt{2}$, $\sin θ_{23}= 1/\sqrt{2}$ and $\sin θ_{12}= 1/\sqrt{3}$. We show that TBC mixing may arise approximately from Tri-bimaximal, Bi-maximal or Golden Ratio neutrino mixing, together with Cabibbo-like charged lepton corrections arising from a Pati-Salam gauge group, leading to predictions for the CP-violating ph…
The Cabibbo Angle Anomaly, an apparent deficit in first-row CKM unitarity, can be addressed by leptophilic Standard Model extensions that generate new contributions to the Fermi constant and affect the determination of the CKM element $V_{ud}$. We focus on simplified models with this property, including the Standard Model extended by vectorlike leptons, by the singly charged scalar singlet, or by a leptophilic $Z'$ boson.
The most statistically significant hints for new physics in the flavor sector are discrepancies between theory and experiment in $B$ decays to lepton pairs ($b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$) and a deficit in $1^{\rm st}$ row CKM unitarity (the Cabibbo Angle anomaly). We propose that these anomalies can be reconciled by a simplified model with massive gauge bosons transforming in the adjoint representation of $SU(2)_L$. After calculating the impact of this model on $B$ decays, observables testing charged current lepton flavor universality (LFU), electro-weak precision observables and LHC searches we perfor…
The coupling of the electroweak gauge bosons of the Standard Model (SM) to leptons is flavour universal. Extensions of the SM do not necessarily have this property. Rare decays of heavy flavour are suppressed in the SM and new particles may give sizeable contributions to these processes, therefore, their precise study allows for sensitive tests of lepton flavour universality. Of particular interest are rare b to sll decays that are well accessible at the LHCb experiment. Recent results from LHCb on lepton flavour universality in rare b to sll decays are discussed.
We propose a simple model to simultaneously explain four observed flavor anomalies while generating the neutrino mass at the one-loop level. Specifically, we address the measured anomalous magnetic dipole moments of the muon, $Δa_μ$ , and electron, $Δa_e$, the observed anomaly of $b\rightarrow s l^+ l^-$ in the $B$-meson decays, and the Cabibbo-angle anomaly. The model consists of four colorful new degrees of freedom: three scalar leptoquarks with the Standard Model quantum numbers $(3,3,-1/3),(3,2,1/6)$, and $(3,1,2/3)$, and one pair of down-quark-like vector fermion in $(3,1,-1/3)$. The bary…
The determinations of the Cabibbo angle from kaon, pion, $D$ and tau decays disagree with the one from super-allowed beta decays. The resulting $\approx 3\,σ$ deficit in first row (but also first column) CKM unitarity is known as the Cabibbo angle anomaly (CAA). Determining $V_{ud}$ from beta decays requires knowledge of the Fermi constant $G_F$, usually extracted from muon decay. However, because new physics might also affect muon decay, and thus the determination of the Fermi constant, an interesting interplay with the global electroweak fit arises where $G_F$ is a crucial input. In these pr…
We propose a model of quark and lepton mixing based on the tetrahedral A(4) family symmetry with quark-lepton unification via the tetra-colour Pati-Salam gauge group SU(4)_{PS}, together with SU(2)_L x U(1)_R. The "tetra-model" solves many of the flavour puzzles and remarkably gives ten predictions at leading order, including all six PMNS parameters. The Cabibbo angle is approximately given by 1/4, due to the tetra-vacuum alignment (1,4,2), providing the Cabibbo connection between quark and lepton mixing. Higher order corrections are responsible for the smaller quark mixing angles and CP viola…
We determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix (CKM) element |Vus| in several different ways using updated preliminary HFAG averages for the tau lepton branching fractions and we compare the results with the determinations obtained from the kaon decays and from the unitarity of the CKM matrix.
The first principle derivation of kinetic transport equations suggests that a CP-violating mass term during the electroweak phase transition can induce axial vector currents. Since the important terms are of first order in gradients there is a possibility to construct new rephasing invariants that are proportional to the CP phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and to circumvent the upper bound of CP-violating contributions in the Standard Model, the Jarlskog invariant. Qualitative arguments are given that these new contributions still fail to explain electroweak baryogenesis in extens…
We perform a systematical and analytical study of lepton mixing which can be derived from the subgroups of $SU(3)$ under the assumption that neutrinos are Dirac particles. We find that type D groups can predict lepton mixing patterns compatible with the experimental data at $3σ$ level. The lepton mixing matrix turns out to be of the trimaximal form, and the Dirac CP violating phase is trivial. Moreover, we extend the flavor symmetry to the quark sector. The Cabibbo mixing between the first two generations of quarks can be generated by type D groups. Since all the finite subgroups of $U(3)$ whi…
Electroweak-interacting massive particles (EWIMPs) exist in a broad class of new physics models beyond the Standard Model. Searching for such particles is one of most primary goal at the LHC and future colliders. The EWIMP generally affects the LHC signatures through quantum corrections even without direct productions. By measuring the Standard Model processes precisely, we can indirectly probe the EWIMPs. In this paper, we study the current constraint and future prospect of the EWIMPs by using the precision measurements of mono-lepton production from the charged Drell-Yan processes at hadron …
We compute the next-to-leading order corrections of $O(α_s^2α^3)$ to the hadronic production of two oppositely charged leptons and two hard jets, $p p \to j j l^- l^+$, using Recola and Collier. We include electroweak and QCD corrections at the given order and all off-shell effects. We provide detailed predictions for the LHC operating at 13 TeV and obtain per-cent-level corrections for the total cross section. For differential distributions we find significant non-uniform distortions in high-energy tails at the level of several ten per cent due to electroweak Sudakov logarithms and deformatio…
Recently, discrepancies of up to $4\,σ$ between the different determinations of the Cabibbo angle were observed. This "Cabibbo-angle anomaly" could be explained by lepton flavour universality (LFU) violating New Physics (NP) in the neutrino sector. However, modified neutrino couplings to Standard Model gauge bosons also affect many other observables sensitive to LFU violation which have to be taken into account in order to assess the viability of this explanation. Therefore, we perform a model-independent global analysis in a Bayesian approach and find that the tension in the Cabibbo angle is …
We consider some of the recent proposals in which weak-scale dark matter is accompanied by a GeV scale dark sector that could produce spectacular lepton-rich events at the LHC. Since much of the collider phenomenology is only weakly model dependent it is possible to arrive at generic predictions for the discovery potential of future experimental searches. We concentrate on the production of dark states through $Z^0$ bosons and electroweak-inos at the Tevatron or LHC, which are the cleanest channels for probing the dark sector. We properly take into account the effects of dark radiation and dar…
LEP precision on electroweak measurements was sufficient not to hamper the extraction of Higgs couplings at the LHC. But the foreseen permille-level Higgs measurements at future lepton colliders might suffer from parametric electroweak uncertainties in the absence of a dedicated electroweak program. We perform a joint, complete and consistent effective-field-theory analysis of Higgs and electroweak processes. The full electroweak-sector dependence of the $e^+e^- \to WW$ production process is notably accounted for, using statistically optimal observables. Up-to-date HL-LHC projections are combi…
We study the stability of the neutral- and charged-current Drell-Yan process in association with a jet as a standard candle at the LHC under the inclusion of O(alpha_s) supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) corrections within the MSSM. We include the decay of the electroweak gauge boson into dileptons, i.e. we consider the production of charged lepton--anti-lepton or lepton-neutrino final states with one hard jet. We find that the SQCD corrections are negligible for the integrated cross section. Only at high lepton transverse momentum can they induce effects of the percent level.
We adopt a bottom-up approach to reconstruct the possible neutrino mass matrix patterns, in the hypothesis that $λ= \sin θ_C$, where $θ_C$ is the Cabibbo angle, is a useful expansion parameter in the neutrino sector as it is in the quark sector. A numerical analysis of these Cabibbo structures shows that an inverted hierarchy spectrum is statistically favored by the neutrino oscillation data. We then discuss how apparently conflicting mass and mixing data for quarks, charged leptons and neutrinos can fit in a unified perspective. We show that large mixing angles can appear through the seesaw m…
In this work we study the electroweak phase transition in a model with gauged lepton number. Here, a family of vector-like leptons is required in order to cancel the gauge anomalies. Furthermore, these leptons can play an important role in the transition process. We find that this framework is able to provide a strong transition, but only for a very limited number of cases.
The production of a neutral and a charged vector boson with subsequent decays into three charged leptons and a neutrino is a very important process for precision tests of the Standard Model of elementary particles and in searches for anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings. In this article, the first computation of next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections to the production of the four-lepton final states $μ^+μ^- e^+ ν_e$, $μ^+μ^- e^- \barν_e$, $μ^+μ^- μ^+ν_μ$, and $μ^+μ^- μ^- \barν_μ$ at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. We use the complete matrix elements at leading and next-to-lead…
A new representation of electroweak lepton sector is proposed. It consists of two Weyl spinors per one lepton family. It is shown that proposed representation is fully equivalent to the conventional left-handed iso-doublet. New type of plane wave solutions can be found under certain additional assumptions.
In model independent way we consider the possibility of the existence of fermion-antifermion, fermion-fermion bound states which appear due to $γ, Z^0(W^{\pm}$-bosons and scalar, pseudoscalars exchanges including radiative corrections. Our consideration includes the case where at least one particle in the bound state is Majorana fermion or scalar. This paper considers various types of bound states of particles contained in various extensions of the Glashow-Weinberg -Salam model. We calculate long-range forces induced by photonic, gluonic and fermionic loop corrections in scalar (pseudoscalar) e…
We review the current knowledge of the couplings of the tau lepton to the electroweak gauge bosons, the W, Z and photon, obtained from the full L3 data sample at center-of-mass energies near the Z mass. Measurements of the the effective vector and axial-vector weak neutral couplings of the $τ$, the Lorentz structure of the weak charged current, and anomalous couplings of the electroweak gauge bosons to the tau are presented.
$B$-meson decays involving radiative and electroweak penguin processes are sensitive probes to new physics beyond the standard model. The Belle experiment recently reported measurements of the inclusive radiative decay $B \to X^{}_{s} γ$, and exclusive radiative decays $B \to K^{\ast} γ$ and $B \to K^{0}_{S} ηγ$. A lepton-flavor dependent measurements of angular observables for the decays $B \to K^{\ast} \ell \ell$ by Belle hinted at possible deviation from lepton-flavor-universality. Any departure from lepton flavor universality is essentially accompanied by lepton flavor violation. Recently,…
The one-loop electroweak radiative correction of the lowest order to lepton current for deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized leptons by polarized nucleons is obtained in model independent way. The detailed numerical analysis within kinematical requirements of future polarization collider experiments is performed. The possibility to reduce radiative effects by detection of hard photons is studied.
Detailed numerical analysis of four charged leptons photoproduction in frame of standard theory of electroweak interaction is presented. Total and differential cross sections are obtained and investigated using the Monte-Carlo method of numerical integration. Different energies of initial photons (60-2000 GeV in c.m.s.) as well as the definite and averaged spin states of interacting particles are considered. A set of kinematical cuts of linear collider experiments is discussed.
We explore the generation of the baryon asymmetry in an extension of the Standard Model where the lepton number is promoted to a $U(1)_\ell$ gauge symmetry with an associated $Z^\prime$ gauge boson. This is based on a novel electroweak baryogenesis mechanism first proposed by us in Ref. \cite{Carena:2018cjh}. Extra fermionic degrees of freedom - including a fermionic dark matter $χ$ - are introduced in the dark sector for anomaly cancellation. Lepton number is spontaneously broken at high scale and the effective theory, containing the Standard Model, the $Z^\prime$, the fermionic dark matter, …
We study the thermodynamics of the electroweak theory at a finite lepton number density. The phase diagram of the theory is calculated by relating the full 4-dimensional theory to a 3-dimensional effective theory which has been previously solved using nonperturbative methods. It is seen that the critical temperature increases and the value of the Higgs boson mass at which the first order phase transition line ends decreases with increasing leptonic chemical potential.
Various types of electroweak-interacting particles, which have non-trivial charges under the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_L \times \mathrm{U}(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry, appear in various extensions of the Standard Model. These particles are good targets of future lepton colliders, such as the International Linear Collider (ILC), the Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) and the Future Circular Collider of electrons and positrons (FCC-ee). An advantage of the experiments is that, even if their beam energies are below the threshold of the production of the new particles, quantum effects of the particles can be detected …
We obtain limits on generic vector-like leptons at the TeV scale from electroweak precision tests. These limits are complementary to the ones obtained from lepton flavour violating processes. In general, the quality of the global electroweak fit is comparable to the one for the Standard Model. In the case of an extra neutrino singlet mixing with the muon or electron, the global fit allows for a relatively large Higgs mass (M_H < 260 GeV at 90 % C.L.), thus relaxing the tension between the direct LEP limit and the Standard Model fit.
The International Linear Collider (ILC) will be able to precisely measure the electroweak couplings of the top in e+e- -> tt~. We compare the limits which can be achieved at the ILC with those which can be obtained in tt~gamma$ and tt~Z production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
We calculate the cross sections of the baryon and lepton number violating processes. The proper valley method enables us to calculate the multi-boson processes, which have the possibility to observation. The mass corrections of the gauge boson, Higgs particle and top quark are evaluated and the group integration and the phase space integration are performed analytically and numerically.
