Rare $B$, $D$ and $K$ decays provide interesting probes of the Standard Model (SM), with a potential sensitivity to New Physics (NP) higher than other, more common, decays. Their experimental measurement is challenging, and their theoretical interpretation requires a precise knowledge of QCD at low energies, in the non-perturbative (hadronic) regime. The various $b$, $c$, $s$ decays provide different types of tests of the Standard Model, which can be performed in different experimental settings and which may exhibit correlated deviations in models of New Physics.
We present measurements of time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0 --> K0 PI0, B0 --> Ks Pi+ Pi- and B0 --> Ks K+ K- decays. The latter two are extracted using time-dependent Dalitz plot analyses. These results are obtained from a large data sample that contains 657 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider.
We discuss a method for extracting CP phases from pairs of B decays which are related by flavor SU(3). One decay (B0 -> M1 M2) receives a significant bbar -> dbar penguin contribution. The second (B' -> M1' M2') has a significant bbar -> sbar penguin contribution, but is dominated by a single amplitude. CP phase information is obtained using the fact that the B' -> M1' M2' amplitude is related by SU(3) to a piece of the B0 -> M1 M2 amplitude. The leading-order SU(3)-breaking effect (~25%) responsible for the main theoretical error can be removed. For some decay pairs, it can be written in term…
We review the progress on the determination of the CKM matrix elements |V_cs|, |V_cd|, |V_cb|, |V_ub| and heavy quark masses presented at the 6th International Workshop on the CKM Unitarity Triangle.
In this time of transition to a new generation of quark flavor experiments we review both the theoretical and the experimental progress on the determination of unitarity triangle angles from penguin-dominated B decays. This summarizes the activities of the Working Group VI at the CKM2010 workshop.
Rare decays were essential in the discovery of the CKM mechanism of flavour and CP violation and are highly sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. In this summary the current status and future prospects of experimental measurements and the Standard Model theory predictions of various rare B, D and K decay observables are discussed. The specific new physics sensitivities of each mode are also briefly reviewed.
We present results of a unitary triangle fit based on the scan method. This frequentist approach employs Gaussian uncertainties for experimental quantities, but makes no arbitrary assumptions about the distribution of theoretical errors. Instead, we perform a large number of fits, scanning over regions of plausible theory errors for each quantity, and retain those fits meeting a specific confidence level criterion, thereby constraining the $\bar ρ- \bar η$ plane using the standard input measurements (CKM matrix elements, $\sin2 β, B^0_{d,s}$ mixing, $ε_K$) as well as branching fraction and \CP…
We present a Scan Method analysis of the allowed region of the rho bar - eta bar plane using the latest input measurements of the CKM matrix elements, sin 2 beta, B0(s,d) mixing, epsilon(K), alpha and gamma. In this approach, we make no assumptions as to the distribution of theory uncertainties; rather, we scan over the range of plausible theoretical uncertainties and determine confidence level contours in the rho bar eta bar plane. We determine alpha from branching fraction and CP asymmetry measurements of B decays to all light pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar, pesudoscalar-vector, vector-vector and…
In the study of CP violation within and beyond the Standard Model of particle physics, pure hadronic B decays are the key players. Improving the determination of the CKM angle $γ$ is one of the important tasks in this endeavour. Besides, the full description of pure hadronic decays due to their strong interaction dynamics remains one of the challenges. In this summary, we discuss the recent results and progress on $γ$ determinations and direct CP violation in pure hadronic B decays as presented at CKM 2018.
We summarize the results presented in Working Group 5 (WG5) of the CKM 2006 Workshop in Nagoya. The charge of WG5 was to discuss the measurements of unitarity triangle angles $β/ϕ_1$ and $γ/ϕ_3$ from $B$-meson decays containing charm quark(s) in the final states.
The "10$^{\rm th}$ International Workshop on the CKM Unitary Triangle" took place at the University of Heidelberg on September 17$^{\rm th}$-21$^{\rm st}$, 2018. In this write-up, we summarize the material discussed at the workshop by the Working Group 7, which focused on latest experimental results and theoretical developments in the study of mixing and $CP$ violation in the neutral $D$ system, and of $CP$ violation and decay properties of other charm mesons and baryons.
A summary of WG II of the CKM 2018 conference on semileptonic and leptonic $b$-hadron decays is presented. This includes discussions on the CKM matrix element magitudes $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, lepton universality tests such as $R(D^{*})$ and leptonic decays. As is usual for semileptonic and leptonic decays, much discussion is devoted towards the interplay between theoretical QCD calculations and the experimental measurements.
Summary of CKM 2023 working group 5: Direct CP violation (DCPV) including $ϕ_{3}/γ$ from $B\to DK$, DCPV effects, branching fractions and polarisation in charmless $B_{(s)}$ decays
We present a review of the measurements of the CKM angle beta (phi_1) by the BaBar and Belle experiments at the asymmetric-energy e+e- B Factories PEP-II and KEKB. The angle beta (phi_1) is measured by time-dependent CP analyses of neutral B meson decays in a Upsilon(4S)->BBbar system, where one B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state that can be accessed to by both B0 and B0bar, usually a CP eigenstate. This angle has been measured at a high precision through B0-> (ccbar)K0 channels. We also review another tree-dominated decay B0-> D(*)0 h0 (h0 = pi0, eta^{'}, omega); tree decays with…
We provide Standard Model expectations for the rare radiative decays B->K^* gamma, B->rho gamma and B-> omega gamma, and the electroweak penguin decays B->K^* l^+ l^- and B->rho l^+ l^- at the next-to-leading order (NLO), extending our previous results to b->d transitions. We consider branching fractions, isospin asymmetries and direct CP asymmetries. For the electroweak penguin decays, the lepton-invariant mass spectrum and forward-backward asymmetry is also included. Radiative and electroweak penguin transitions in b->d are mainly interesting in the search for new flavour-changing neutral cu…
We summarize the current status of the determination of the CKM matrix elements |V_ud| and |V_us|, which is at the precision frontier of CKM phenomenology. We also review recent progress on the study of charm (semi)leptonic decays, and the determination of |V_cd| and |V_cs|.
We summarize the new results on $B$ meson mixing and mixing-related $CP$ violation presented at CKM2016. We place these results in the context of both previous experimental measurements and the most recent theoretical developments in the field, and discuss prospects for ongoing and future mixing and mixing-related $CP$ violation measurements.
Rare $B$, $D$, and $K$ decays offer unique opportunities to probe for evidence of new particles from physics beyond the Standard Model at mass scales extending from the electroweak scale to well above those directly accessible at the LHC. We review a selection of theoretical and experimental results on rare $B$, $D$, and $K$ decays illustrating the progress made during the past two years.
Recent branching fraction and asymmetry results of Electroweak Penguin B decays from BaBar, Belle and CLEO experiments are reviewed. While these branching fractions are consistent with the Standard Model expectations and are being used to extract heavy quark model parameters and CKM matrix elements, the asymmetry results are just becoming sensitive to observe any new physics effects.
In the study of two-body charmless B decays as a mean of looking for direct CP-violation and measuring the CKM mixing parameters in the Standard Model, the short-distance penguin contribution with its absorptive part generated by charm quark loop seems capable of producing sufficient $B \to Kπ$ decays rates, as obtained in factorization and QCD-improved factorization models. However there are also long-distance charming penguin contributions which could give rise to a strong phase due to the rescattering $D^{*}D^{*}_{s} \to Kπ$ etc. In this talk, I would like to discuss recent works on the cha…
The present status of universality tests of the weak couplings for quarks and leptons is reviewed, with updated information for the muon lifetime and for first-row inputs in the CKM matrix. We discuss the impact of this high-precision SM test in constraining new physics models. We also discuss a precise lepton flavor-violation test from leptonic K decays and recent progress in K-Kbar mixing.
Penguin, or loop, decays of B mesons induce effective flavor-changing neutral currents, which are forbidden at tree level in the Standard Model. These decays give special insight into the CKM matrix and are sensitive to non-standard model effects. In this review, we give a historical and theoretical introduction to penguins and a description of the various types of penguin processes: electromagnetic, electroweak, and gluonic. We review the experimental searches for penguin decays, including the measurements of the electromagnetic penguins b -> s gamma and B -> K* gamma and gluonic penguins B -…
Radiative penguin decays provide an indirect probe for physics beyond the Standard Model and contribute to the determination of the CKM matrix elements. Copious quantities of B mesons produced at the B-Factories permit precision measurements of radiative penguin decays. We review the experimental status of the radiative penguin processes b --> s(d) gamma.
We compute for the first time the long-distance penguin contribution to the double radiative $B$-meson decays due to the purely hadronic operators acting with the electromagnetic current in the background soft-gluon field from first field-theoretical principles by introducing a novel subleading $B$-meson distribution amplitude. The numerically dominant penguin amplitude arises from the soft-gluon radiation off the light up-quark loop rather than the counterpart charm-loop effect on account of the peculiar analytical behaviour of the short-distance hard-collinear function. Importantly the long-…
We discuss some aspects of the search for CP asymmetry in the three body B decays, revealed through the interference among neighbor resonances in the Dalitz plot. We propose a competitive method to extract the CKM $γ$ angle combining Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of $B^{\pm} \to K^{\pm} π^+ π^-$ and untagged $B^0$, $\bar B^0 \to K_s π^+ π^-$. The method also obtains the ratio and phase difference between the {\it tree} and {\it penguin} contributions from $B^0$ and $\bar B^0 \to K^{*\pm} π^{\mp} $ decays and the CP asymmetry between $B^0$ and $\bar{B^0}$. From Monte Carlo studies of 100K even…
We update the profile of the CKM matrix. The apex (rhobar, etabar) of the Unitarity Triangle is given by means of a global fit. We propose to include therein sin2alpha from the CP-violating asymmetries in B0->rho+rho-, using isospin to discriminate the penguin contribution. The constraint from epsilon'/epsilon is briefly discussed. We study the impact from the measurement of the rare decay K+->pi+nunu-bar, and from a future observation of KL->pi0nunubar. The B system is investigated in detail, beginning with 2beta+gamma and gamma from B0->D(*)+-pi-+ and B+->D(*)0K+. A significant part of this p…
In this paper, we study and try to find the constraint on the CKM angle alpha from the experimental measurements of CP violation in B_d^0 --> pi^+ pi^- decay, as reported very recently by BaBar and Belle Collaborations. After considering uncertainties of the data and the ratio r of penguin over tree amplitude, we found that strong constraint on both the CKM angle alpha and the strong phase delta can be obtained from the measured CP asymmetries S_{pi pi} and A_{pi pi}: (a) the ranges of 87 degrees <= alpha <= 131 degrees and 36 degrees <= delta <= 144 degrees are allowed by 1 sigma of the avera…
The LHCb and CDF Collaborations have recently reported evidence for a CP asymmetry around -0.7% in $ΔA_{CP}$, the difference between $A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^+ K^-)$ and $A_{CP}(D^0 \to π^+π^-)$. In the Standard Model this effect may be accounted for by enhanced $1/m_c$ corrections in a CP-violating penguin amplitude governed by a Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) factor $V^*_{cb}V_{ub}$. A consistent scheme based on broken flavor SU(3) is presented relating Cabibbo-favored (CF) and singly-Cabibbo-suppressed (SCS) $D$ meson decay rates into two pseudoscalars. Two important ingredients supporting the ab…
We search for the decay B0 -> rho0 rho0 in a data sample of about 227 million Upsilon(4S)-> BBbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC. We find no significant signal and set an upper limit of 1.1*10^-6 at 90% CL on the branching fraction. As a result, the uncertainty due to penguin contributions on the CKM unitarity angle alpha measured in B -> rho rho decays is 11 degrees at 68% CL.
We search for the decays B0->rho0rho0, B0->rho0f0, and B0->f0f0 in a sample of about 348 million Upsilon(4S)->BBbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC. We find evidence for B0->rho0rho0 with 3.0 sigma significance and measure the branching fraction B = (1.16 +0.37-0.36 +-0.27) 10^{-6} and longitudinal polarization fraction f_L = 0.86 +0.11-0.13 +-0.05. As a consequence, the uncertainty on the CKM unitarity angle alpha due to penguin contributions in B->rhorho decays is estimated to be 18 degrees at 1 sigma level. We also set upper lim…
Using a data sample of 122 million Upsilon(4S) -> BBbar decays collected with BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory at SLAC, we measure the time-dependent-asymmetry parameters of the longitudinally polarized component in the B0 -> rho^+ rho^- decay as C_L = -0.23 +/- 0.24 (stat) +/- 0.14 (syst) and S_L = -0.19 +/- 0.33 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst). The B0 -> rho0 rho0 decay mode is also searched for in a data sample of about 227 million BBbar pairs. No significant signal is observed, and an upper limit of 1.1 * 10-6 (90% C.L.) on the branching fraction is set. The penguin contribution to…
The penguin-dominated two-body weak decay of $Λ_b\rightarrow Λϕ$ is studied based on the perturbative QCD approach. In addition to the penguin emission diagrams, the penguin exchange and $W$ exchange ones are also accounted for. It is found that the penguin exchange contribution is in fact important and comparable to the penguin emission one, while the $W$ exchange contribution is highly Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) suppressed. The predicted branching ratio, $\mathcal{B}(Λ_b\rightarrow Λϕ)=6.9^{+1.9+1.8}_{-2.0-1.6}\times10^{-6}$, is larger than the previous theoretical estimates but in comp…
We search for the decays B0->rho0rho0, B0->rho0f0, and B0->f0f0 in a sample of about 384 million Upsilon(4S)->BBbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at SLAC. We find evidence for B0->rho0rho0 with 3.5 sigma significance and measure the branching fraction BR = (1.07+-0.33+-0.19)10^-6 and longitudinal polarization fraction f_L = 0.87+-0.13+-0.04, where the first uncertainty is statistical, and the second is systematic. The uncertainty on the CKM unitarity angle alpha due to penguin contributions in B-> rho rho decays is 18 degrees at the 1 si…
We calculate the hard-scattering kernels relevant to the negative-helicity decay amplitude in B decays to two vector mesons in the framework of QCD factorisation. We then perform a comprehensive analysis of the 34 B->VV decays, including B_s decays and the complete set of polarisation observables. We find considerable uncertainties from weak annihilation and the non-factorisation of spectator-scattering. Large longitudinal polarisation is expected with certainty only for a few tree-dominated colour-allowed modes, which receive small penguin and spectator-scattering contributions. This allows f…
We present the summary of the working group on $B$ mixing and the related CP violation at the CKM 2014 workshop. The contributions reflect the experimental and theoretical progress in the field over the last two years since the last CKM workshop.
We present preliminary measurements of CP-violating asymmetries in B decays. These include new results on the CKM angle alpha based on studies of the decay B -> rho+ rho- and several charmonium and hadronic penguin modes, sensitive to the CKM angle beta, including results on B -> phi K0S, B -> K+K-K0, B -> eta' K0S, B -> f0 K0, and B -> pi0 K0S. We also report on several of results related to the extraction of gamma and (2*beta+gamma) and present limits on CPT violation in B decays.
A precise measurement of the angle $α$ in the CKM triangle is very important for a complete test of Standard Model. A theoretically clean method to extract $α$ is provided by B$^0 \to ρπ$ decays. Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the BTeV reconstruction efficiency and to estimate the signal to background ratio for these decays were performed. Finally the time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis, using the isospin amplitude formalism for tree and penguin contributions, was carried out. It was shown that in one year of data taking BTeV could achieve an accuracy on $α$ better than 5$^{\circ}$.
Using a theoretical framework based on the next-to-leading order QCD-improved effective Hamiltonian and a factorization Ansatz for the hadronic matrix elements of the four-quark operators, we reassess branching fractions in two-body non-leptonic decays $B \to PP, PV, VV$, involving the lowest lying light pseudoscalar $(P)$ and vector $(V)$ mesons in the standard model. Using the sensitivity of the decay rates on the effective number of colors, $N_c$, as a criterion of theoretical predictivity, we classify all the current-current (tree) and penguin transitions in five different classes. The rec…
This summary reviews contributions to the CKM 2021 workshop in Working Group 4. In particular, theoretical and experimental progress in determining $B$ meson mixing properties are discussed.
The QCD factorization (QCDF) method usually contains infrared divergences which introduce large model dependence to its predictions on charmless B decays. The amplitudes of charmless B decays can be decomposed into "tree" and "penguin" parts which are conventionally defined, not from the topology of the dominant diagrams, but through their associated CKM factors V_{ub}^* V_{uq} and V_{tb}^* V_{tq}, respectively, with q=d,s. We find that for B_{d,s} \to π^+ K^- decays, the "tree" amplitude can be well estimated in QCDF with small errors, as the endpoint singularities have been canceled to a lar…
Recent KLOE measurements allowing the extraction of the Vus element of the CKM matrix are here briefly described. The status of the resulting value of Vus is summarized. The perspectives for the completion of ongoing analyses are discussed, with particular emphasis on the measurements of scalar form factor slopes from study of KLmu3 and of Vus from the decay width of K+-l3.
In this article we investigate the consequences of radiative flavor violation (RFV) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). In this framework the small off-diagonal elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and the small quark masses of the first two generations are generated from the trilinear supersymmetry-breaking terms. The impact of RFV on flavor-physics observables is studied in detail. We focus on the limiting cases in which the CKM matrix is either generated in the down-sector, i.e. by the soft SUSY-breaking mass insertions delta^dLR_i3 (i=1,2), or in the up-q…
We give a summary of the discussions in Working Group V of the CKM2010 workshop dealing with determinations of the angle gamma of the unitarity triangle of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix from B-meson decays into charmed final states.
The Belle experiment has used several methods to measure or constrain the angles phi_1, phi_2, and phi_3 (or beta, alpha, and gamma) of the CKM unitarity triangle. The results are sin(2phi_1) = 0.728 \pm 0.056 (stat) \pm 0.023 (syst) or phi_1= (23.4 +2.7 -2.4) degrees from B0 -> J/psi K0 decays (140 fb-1); phi_2 = 0-19 degrees or 71-180 degrees at 95.4% CL from B0 -> pi+pi- decays (253 fb-1); and phi_3 = [68 +14 -15 (stat) \pm 13 (syst) \pm 11 (model)] degrees from B+ -> (D0, D0bar) K+, (D0,D0bar) -> K0_S pi+ pi- decays (253 fb-1). These values satisfy the triangle relation phi_1 + phi_2 + phi…
Belle II is a Super $B$ Factory experiment, expected to record 50 ab$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collisions at the SuperKEKB accelerator until 2035. The large samples of $B$ mesons, charm hadrons, and tau leptons produced in the clean experimental environment of $e^+e^-$ collisions will provide the basis of a broad and unique flavor-physics program. Belle II will pursue physics beyond the Standard Model in many ways, for example: improving the precision of weak interaction parameters, particularly Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and phases, and thus more rigorously test the CKM paradigm…
In the neutral B meson system, it is possible to measure the CKM angle alpha using the decay mode b -> u ubar d in the presence of pollution from gluonic b -> d penguin decays. Here the recent status of the measurements of CP-violating asymmetry parameters using time-dependent analyses in B -> pi+pi- and B -> rho pi decays and the perspectives of a sin2alpha measurement are presented.
We present a summary of measurements sensitive to the CKM angle ϕ2 (α), performed by the BaBar and the Belle experiments which both collect B\bar{B} pairs produced at the Υ(4S) resonance in asymmetric e+e- collisions. We discuss the decays B -> ππ, ρρ, a_1πand (ρπ)^0. The CP asymmetries, branching fractions and polarizations obtained are used to constrain ϕ2.
Charmless hadronic $B$ decays are a good testing ground for the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics. The dominant amplitudes are CKM suppressed tree diagrams and/or $ b\to s$ or $b\to d$ loop ("penguin") diagrams. Non-SM particle could appear in the loop, and hence these decays are sensitive to search for New Physics (NP). Some of the recent measurements of two-body charmless hadronic $B$ decays from Belle and their prospects at Belle II are discussed.
We present a summary of recent studies on $CP$ violation with the Belle experiment using the final data sample of $772 \times 10^{6}$ B\bar{B} pairs produced at the Ypsilon(4S) resonance at the KEK asymmetric e^+ e^- collider. We discuss preliminary measurements of the branching fraction, the polarization and the $CP$ asymmetries of the decay $B^0 \rightarrow ρ^{+} ρ^{-}$ and an updated constraint on the CKM angle $ϕ_2$ from the $B\toρρ$ system. Being also related to $ϕ_2$, we present a preliminary measurement of the branching fraction of $B^0\rightarrow π^0π^0$ decays. Last, a preliminary mod…
Compilation and summary of time-dependent measurements of the CKM angle $γ/ϕ_3$ with events collected at the Babar detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric B factory.
We discuss the determination of the CKM angle $α$ using the non-leptonic two-body decays $B\to ππ$, $B\to ρρ$ and $B\to ρπ$ using the latest data available. We illustrate the methods used in each case and extract the corresponding value of $α$. Combining all these elements, we obtain the following determination of $α_{\rm dir}=( 86.2^{+4.4}_{-4.0}~~ \cup~~ 178.4^{+3.9}_{-5.1})^\circ$. We assess the uncertainties associated to the breakdown of the isospin hypothesis and the choice of statistical framework in detail. We also determine the hadronic amplitudes (tree and penguin) describing the QCD…
A summary of the most recent and important measurements in b physics is presented. The production of beauty particles in Z decays, b quark couplings, lifetimes, B0-B0bar oscillations, semileptonic b decays and studies of the number of charm quarks produced in b decays are reviewed. Extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements |V_{td}|, |V_{cb}|, |V_{ub}| and implication for |V_{ts}| are discussed.
We present a summary of the measurements of the CKM angle, alpha (phi2), performed by the BaBar and Belle experiments which collect BBbar pairs at the Y(4S) resonance produced in asymmetric e+ e- collisions. We discuss the measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries in the B --> pi pi, rho pi and rho rho final states that lead to constraints on alpha (phi2).
