The QCD factorization (QCDF) method usually contains infrared divergences which introduce large model dependence to its predictions on charmless B decays. The amplitudes of charmless B decays can be decomposed into "tree" and "penguin" parts which are conventionally defined, not from the topology of the dominant diagrams, but through their associated CKM factors V_{ub}^* V_{uq} and V_{tb}^* V_{tq}, respectively, with q=d,s. We find that for B_{d,s} \to π^+ K^- decays, the "tree" amplitude can be well estimated in QCDF with small errors, as the endpoint singularities have been canceled to a large extent. With this as the only input from QCDF and combined with flavor symmetry, the branching ratio of B_s \to π^+ K^- are estimated to be significantly larger than the CDF measurement. This contradiction could be solved if the form factor F^{B_s K} is smaller than the light cone sum rules estimation or the "tree" amplitude has been over estimated in QCDF. The latter possibility could happen if charming penguins are nonperturbative and not small, as argued in soft collinear effective theory. To differentiate between these two possibilities, we examine the similar B_s \to ρ^+ K^- decay with the same technique. It is found that a large part of the uncertainties are canceled in the ratio B(B_s \to ρ^+ K^-)/B(B_s \to π^+ K^-). It is predicted to be 2.5 \pm 0.2 in QCDF which is independent on the form factor. However if charming penguins are important, this ratio could be very different from the QCDF prediction. Therefore the ratio of these two branching ratios could be an interesting indicator of the role of charming penguins in charmless B decays.
It is argued that while the scale dependence of the parton distributions in the fixed flavor factorization scheme is governed by three active flavors, the scale dependence of the running coupling should nevertheless be better governed by a variable number of active flavors.
We consider the QCD factorization of DIS structure functions at small x and amplitudes of 2->2 -hadronic forward scattering at high energy. We show that both collinear and k_T-factorization for these processes can be obtained approximately as reductions of a more general (totally unintegrated) form of the factorization. The requirement of ultraviolet and infrared stability of the factorization convolutions allows us to obtain restrictions on the fits for the parton distributions in k_T- and collinear factorization.
We complete the calculation of the QCD penguin amplitude at next-to-next-to-leading order in the QCD factorization approach to non-leptonic B-meson decays. This provides the last missing piece in the computation of the QCD correction to direct CP asymmetries at leading power in the heavy-quark expansion.
We estimate the potential size of the weak annihilation amplitudes in QCD factorization as allowed by experimental data. To achieve this goal, we establish a connection between the amplitudes in the QCD factorization and the so-called topological and $SU(3)$-invariant descriptions. Our approach is based purely on the analysis of the tensor structure of the decay amplitudes. By focusing on the processes $B\rightarrow P P$ and considering data from CP asymmetries and branching fractions, we perform a global fit to the $SU(3)$-irreducible quantities assuming minimal theoretical bias. Subsequently…
The approximate tree decays B- -> pi- pi0/rho- rho0 may serve as benchmark channels for testing the various theoretical descriptions of the strong interaction dynamics in hadronic B meson decays. The ratios of hadronic and differential semileptonic B -> pi l nu/rho l nu decay rates at maximum recoil provide particularly clean probes of the QCD dynamics. We confront the recent NNLO calculation in the QCD factorization framework with experimental data and find support for the factorization assumption. A detailed analysis of all tree-dominated B -> pi pi/pi rho/rho rho decay modes seems to favour…
We show that both the k_T- and collinear factorization for the DIS structure functions can be obtained by consecutive reductions of the Compton scattering amplitude. Each of these reductions is an approximation valid under certain assumptions. In particular, the transitions to the k_T- factorization is possible when the virtualities of the partons connecting the perturbative and non-perturbative blobs are space-like. Then, if the parton distribution has a sharp maximum in k_T, the k_T factorization can be reduced to the collinear factorization.
We first present a model-independent analysis using flavor SU(3) symmetry with SU(3) breaking effects in $B$ decays to two charmless vector mesons ($VV$) in the final state. In order to bridge the flavor SU(3) symmetry approach and the factorization approach in $B \to VV$ decays, we explicitly show how to translate each SU(3) amplitude into a corresponding amplitude in factorization. Various decay modes, including $B \to K^* ϕ$ which is so far the only $B \to VV$ mode having some experimental evidence, are discussed in both the SU(3) symmetry and factorization approaches. Within the generalize…
In this paper, we perform a global analysis of $B \to PP$ and $PV$ decays with the QCD factorization approach. It is encouraging to observe that the predictions of QCD factorization are in good agreement with experiment. The best fit $γ$ is around $79^\circ$. The penguin-to-tree ratio $|P_{ππ}/T_{ππ}|$ of $π^+ π^-$ decays is preferred to be larger than 0.3. We also show the confidence levels for some interesting channels: $B^0 \to π^0 π^0$, $K^+ K^-$ and $B^+ \to ωπ^+$, $ωK^+$. For $B \to πK^\ast$ decays, they are expected to have smaller branching ratios with more precise measurements.
Two types of predictions for charmless B decays are compared. One involves estimates based on factorization and models for form factors, while the other involves the use of flavor SU(3), sometimes with assumptions about the smallness of certain amplitudes. After a comparison of some factorization predictions with recent data, specific decays of $B$ mesons to two charmless mesons are discussed.
The CDF 3.7 sigma evidence of pure annihilation $B_s \to π^+ π^-$ decays, if confirmed, would imply a large annihilation scenario in the QCD factorization approach. This is somewhat unexpected as the large annihilation scenario was disfavored in previous studies. In this paper we reinvestigate the role of annihilation topology in QCD factorization. We find that it is not easy to reach the CDF central value of $B_s \to π^+ π^-$ decays when other decay channels are considered. Our analysis also reveals that, for well-measured charmless B decays into two final pseudoscalar mesons, the QCD factori…
A definition of partonic jet flavor that is both theoretically well-defined and experimentally robust would have profound implications for measurements and predictions especially for heavy flavor applications. Recently, a definition of jet flavor was introduced as the net flavor flowing along the direction of the Winner-Take-All axis of a jet which is soft safe to all orders, but not collinear safe. Here, we exploit the lack of collinear safety and propose a factorization theorem of perturbative flavor fragmentation functions that resum collinear divergences and describe the evolution of flavo…
Exclusive hadronic B-meson decays into two-body final states consisting of a light pseudoscalar or vector meson along with an eta or eta' meson are of great phenomenological interest. Their theoretical analysis involves decay mechanisms that are unique to flavor-singlet states, such as their coupling to gluons or their ``intrinsic charm'' content. These issues are studied systematically in the context of QCD factorization and the heavy-quark expansion. Theory can account for the experimental data on the B->K^{(*)} eta^{(')} branching fractions, albeit within large uncertainties.
Within the framework of $k_t$-factorization, we compute the differential cross section for the production of $B$ and $D$ mesons, using a general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme. Our calculations include all relevant $2\to 2$ processes. We explain how to include the $2\to 1$ process in our calculations, but argue this is not (numerically) relevant at moderate transverse momentum due to its cancellation with the subtraction term. We apply this formalism to $pp$ collisions and compare our results with ALICE and LHCb data at central and forward rapidity.
We calculate the cross section of diffractive dijet photoproduction in $ep$ scattering at next-to-leading order (NLO) of perturbative QCD (pQCD), which we supplement by a model of factorization breaking for the resolved-photon contribution. In this model, the suppression depends on the flavor and momentum fraction of the partons in the photon. We show that within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, the resulting approach provides a good description of the available HERA data in most of the bins. Hence, taken together with the observation that NLO pQCD explains well the data on diffract…
The 1/N_c expansion for the baryon distribution amplitude is constructed in terms of a specially designed generating functional. At large N_c this functional shows exponential behavior. The exponential factor is universal for all low-lying baryons and baryon-meson scattering states. Simple factorization properties are established for the preexponential term. This factorization agrees with the large-N_c contracted SU(2N_f) spin-flavor symmetry. The consistency of the factorization with the soft-pion theorem for the baryon distribution amplitude is explicitly checked. A relation between the gene…
After briefly introducing the framework of QCD factorization for B-> M1 M2 in the language of the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we firstly address the recent efforts on higher-order radiative corrections in QCD factorization. Then we discuss some phenomenologies in B-> V V within the framework of QCD factorization.
Using flavor SU(3) symmetry, we perform a model-independent analysis of charmless $\bar B_{u,d} (\bar B_s) \to PP, ~PV$ decays. All the relevant topological diagrams, including the presumably subleading diagrams, such as the QCD- and EW-penguin exchange diagrams and flavor-singlet weak annihilation ones, are introduced. Indeed, the QCD-penguin exchange diagram turns out to be important in understanding the data for penguin-dominated decay modes. In this work we make efforts to bridge the (model-independent but less quantitative) topological diagram or flavor SU(3) approach and the (quantitativ…
We have analyzed the $D\rightarrow πK, KK$ decay with the naive factorization (NF), QCD factorization (QCDF)and QCD factorization including soft-gluon exchanges (QCDF+SGE). In these decay channels, the soft-gluon effects are firstly calculated with light cone QCD sum rules. Comparing the three kind approaches, we can find the calculation results have made much more improved QCD factorization (QCDF) than the naive factorization (NF), and the calculation results have also made improved QCD factorization including soft-gluon exchanges (QCDF+SGE) than the QCD factorization (QCDF) in the color-supp…
The operator level proof of factorization theorem exhibited in [1] is extended to the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering process(SIDIS). Factorization theorem can be proved at operator level if there are not detected soft hadrons.
Based on a recent work on the quantum chromodynamic (QCD) factorization for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), we present a set of factorization formulas for the spin-dependent DIS and Drell-Yan cross sections at low transverse momentum.
In this article we review recent advances in the area of QCD factorization. We begin with a brief outline of QCD factorization, as well as a description of some recent results regarding B-->VV decays. We examine what is necessary at NLO, look at recent advances towards that goal and consider what remains to be done.
The exclusive process e+ e- -> e+ e- rho^0_L rho^0_L allows to study various dynamics and factorization properties of perturbative QCD. At moderate energy, we demonstrate how collinear QCD factorization emerges, involving generalized distribution amplitudes (GDA) and transition distribution amplitudes (TDA). At higher energies, in the Regge limit of QCD, we show that it offers a promising probe of the BFKL resummation effects to be studied at the International Linear Collider (ILC).
We review highlights of recent results on the hadron spectrum and flavor physics from lattice QCD. We also discuss recent rapid progress on the muon anomalous magnetic moment.
In this work, we calculate the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of the decays of $B \to ππ$ and $πK$ in the frame of QCD factorization in the heavy quark limit. We also compare the results with the estimates by using conventional factorization and experimental measurements.
We study analytical properties of the hard exclusive process amplitudes. We found that QCD factorization for deeply virtual Compton scattering and hard exclusive vector meson production results in the subtracted dispersion relation with the subtraction constant determined by the Polyakov-Weiss $D$-term.
In this talk, I briefly review several models of the heavy quarkonium production at collider energies, and discuss the status of QCD factorization for these production models.
The exclusive process e+ e- -> e+ e-rho0_L rho0_L allows to study various dynamics and factorization properties of perturbative QCD. At moderate energy, we demonstrate how collinear QCD factorization emerges, involving either generalized distribution amplitudes (GDA) or transition distribution amplitudes (TDA). At higher energies, in the Regge limit of QCD, we show that it offers a promising probe of the BFKL resummation effects to be studied at ILC.
In this paper we argue for existence of an intrinsic mass scale in QCD factorization and present a possible origin of it. Values of this scale are within the Non-Perturbative QCD mass range. It differs from the known factorization scale which is within the perturbative mass range and dependence on which vanishes in the factorization convolutions. We show that the intrinsic mass scale plays the key part in reduction of KT Factorization to Collinear Factorization: such a reduction can be done provided that dependence of the non-perturbative inputs in KT Factorization on invariant energy has a sh…
We investigate the breakdown of collinear factorization for non-inclusive observables in hadron-hadron collisions. For pure QCD processes, factorization is violated at the three-loop level and it has a structure identical to that encountered previously in the case of super-leading logarithms. In particular, it is driven by the non-commutation of Coulomb/Glauber gluon exchanges with other soft exchanges. Beyond QCD, factorization may be violated at the two-loop level provided that the hard subprocess contains matrix element contributions with phase differences between different colour topologie…
Some recent progress in China in the study of charmless B decays with QCD factorization is reviewed. Chirally enhanced power corrections and infrared divergence problem are stressed.
We show that the factorization assumption in color-suppressed $B$ meson decays is not ruled out by experimental data on $B \ra K(K^*) + J/Ψ(Ψ^{'})$. The problem previously pointed out might be due to an inadequate choice of hadronic form factors. Within the Isgur-Wise SU(2) heavy flavor symmetry framework, we search for possible $q^2$ dependence of form factors that are capable of explaining simultaneously the large longitudinal polarization $ρ_L$ observed in $B \ra K^* + J/Ψ$ and the relatively small ratio of rates $R_{J/Ψ} = Γ(B \ra K^* + J/Ψ)/Γ(B \ra K + J/Ψ)$. We find out that the puzzle c…
The values of quark condensate and tensor susceptibility of QCD vacuum are calculated with different number of flavors. It is shown that, the values of tensor susceptibility are obviously dependent on the flavor numbers while the flavor-number dependence of quark condensate is undetermined.
In this talk, we present the QCD factorization formula for heavy quarkonium production at large $p_T$ with factorized leading-power and next-to-leading power contributions in the $1/p_T$ expansion. We show that the leading order analytical calculations in this QCD factorization approach can reproduce effectively the full next-to-leading order numerical results derived using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. We demonstrate that the next-to-leading power contributions are crucial to the description of the channels that are the most relevant for the rate as well as polarizatio…
In the QCD factorization (QCDF) approach we study the direct $CP$ violation in $\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowρ^0(ω)ρ^0(ω)\rightarrowπ^+π^-π^+π^-$ via the $ρ-ω$ mixing mechanism. We find that the $CP$ violation can be enhanced by double $ρ-ω$ mixing when the masses of the $π^+π^-$ pairs are in the vicinity of the $ω$ resonance, and the maximum $CP$ violation can reach 28{\%}. We also compare the results from the naive factorization and the QCD factorization.
I consider the singular behaviour of tree-level QCD amplitudes when the momenta of three partons become simultaneously parallel and I discuss the universal factorization formula that controls the singularities of the multiparton matrix elements in this collinear limit.
We show that factorization holds for the deeply virtual Compton scattering amplitude in QCD, up to power suppressed terms, to all orders in perturbation theory. Furthermore, we show that the virtuality of the produced photon does not influence the general theorem.
Now that lattice QCD simulations are able to include effects of light sea quarks, the prospects are good for constraining quark flavor phenomenology. This review talk for particle physics experimentalists begins with an introduction intended to describe broadly the steps of lattice Monte Carlo simulations. The remainder of the talk is a brief survey of recent and ongoing calculations relevant for quark flavor physics.
Effective field theory methods are used to study factorization of the deep inelastic scattering cross-section. The cross-section is shown to factor in QCD, even though it does not factor in perturbation theory for some choices of the infrared regulator. Messenger modes are not required in soft-collinear effective theory for deep inelastic scattering as x -> 1.
In the framework of QCD factorization, we study the $B$ meson exclusive decays $B\to χ_{cJ}K$ where the spin-triplet P-wave charmonium states $χ_{cJ}(J=0,1,2)$ are described by the color-singlet non-relativistic wave functions. We find that for these decays (except $χ_{c1}$) there are infrared divergences arising from nonfactorizable vertex corrections as well as logarithmic end-point singularities arising from nonfactorizable spectator interactions at leading-twist order. The infrared divergences due to vertex corrections will explicitly break down QCD factorization within the color-singlet m…
We study the infrared behaviour of tree-level QCD amplitudes and we derive infrared-factorization formulae that are valid at any perturbative order. We explicitly compute all the universal infrared factors that control the singularities in the various soft and/or collinear limits at O(as^2).
The exclusive reaction of rho meson pair electroproduction in gamma*gamma* collisions is a nice place to study various dynamics and factorization properties in the perturbative sector of QCD. At low energy (quarks dominance), this process can be considered as a way to explore QCD factorizations involving generalized distribution amplitudes (GDA) and transition distribution amplitudes (TDA), and, in the Regge limit of QCD (gluons dominance), it seems to offer a promising probe of the BFKL resummation effects which could be studied at the next international linear collider (ILC).
This is a brief introduction to two of the central concepts in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, jets and factorization, which serve as windows into the short-distance behavior of quantum fields.
In this work, we give a detailed discussion for QCD factorization involved the complete chirally enhanced power corrections for B decays to two light pseudoscalar mesons, and present some detailed calculations of radiative corrections at the order of alpha_s. We point out that the infrared finiteness of the vertex corrections in the chirally enhanced power corrections requires twist-3 light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of the light pseudoscalar symmetric. However, even in the symmetric condition, there is also logarithmic divergence from the endpoints of the twist-3 LCDAs in the hard s…
The global analysis of B-->PP, PV charmless decays with QCD factorization (QCDF) is presented. The predictions of QCDF are in good agreement with experiments. The best fitted CKM angel gamma is around 79 degree. The predicted branching ratios of B --> pi^0 pi^0, omega K^+, omega pi^+, pi^+ K^{{\ast}0} etc. are also in good agreement with new data of BaBar and Belle
We study the factorization-forbidden decays $B\to h_c K$ and $B\toχ_{c2}K$ in the QCD factorization approach. If neglecting the vertex corrections and regularizing the end-point singularities in spectator corrections properly, we get small branching ratios for both the two decay modes, which are roughly consistent with the experimental upper limits. This is in contrast to another factorization-forbidden decay $B\to χ_{c0}K$, for which a large decay rate is obtained in the same approach.
We present an entirely perturbative QCD determination of the critical phase transition flavor number $N^{cr}_{f}$ of QCD. The results obtained are compared with various determinations of $N^{cr}_{f}$ by non-pertrubative methods, including lattice QCD. The wider physics implication of the existence of the Banks-Zaks regime of QCD with only weakly interacting quarks, is discussed briefly.
I consider nonleptonic decays of B mesons into two light mesons using the light-cone wave functions for the mesons. In the heavy quark limit, nonfactorizable contributions are calculable from first principles in some decay modes. I review the idea of the QCD-improved factorization method and discuss the implications in phenomenology.
Heavy-flavored emissions have been always considered as an excellent channel to test properties of Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at present and future colliders. Among different regimes, in which heavy-flavor production can be investigated, we focus our attention on the semi-hard one, where $s \gg \{ Q^2 \} \gg Λ_{QCD}$ ($s$ is the squared center-of-mass energy, $\{ Q^2 \}$ a (set of) hard scale(s) characteristic of the process and $Λ_{QCD}$ the QCD mass scale). Here, we build predictions in a hybrid collinear/high-energy factorization, in which the standard collinear description is supplemente…
The $B_{c}$ ${\to}$ $J/ψπ$, $η_{c}π$ decays are studied in the scheme of the QCD factorization approach. The branching ratios are calculated with the asymptotic distribution amplitude of the pion. The charm quark mass effect is considered. We find that the mass effect on the branching ratios is small.
The QCD factorization approach provides the theoretical basis for a systematic analysis of nonleptonic decay amplitudes of B mesons in the heavy-quark limit. After recalling the basic ideas underlying this formalism, several tests of QCD factorization in the decays B -> D^(*) L, B -> K^* gamma, and B -> pi K,pi pi are discussed. It is then illustrated how factorization can be used to obtain new constraints on the parameters of the unitarity triangle.
We prove that in the limit $m_b, m_c\to\infty$ with $m_c/m_b$ fixed, factorization holds at order $α_s$ for the decay $Λ_b^0\toΛ_c^+π^-$. This proof is done in the infinite-momentum frame in which the momenta of $π$, $Λ_c$, and $Λ_b$ go to infinity. Our result is renormalization scale and scheme independent at $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$. This is the same as QCD factorization for $B \to D π$.
We compare the factorization approach, the perturbative QCD approach and the Beneke-Buchalla-Neubert-Sachrajda approach to nonleptonic charmless $B$ meson decays. We discuss their treatments of factorizable, nonfactorizable, and annihilation contributions, infrared-cutoff and scale dependences, and strong phases. It is proposed that measurement of CP asymmetries in two-body $B$ meson decays provides an appropriate test of the these approaches.
This paper is a part of a series of works where we in detail examine the concept of Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD), or k_T, factorization, which is frequently encountered in the literature and is widely used in the phenomenological applications of QCD at very high energies. We address the question of what exactly factorization is, as it is meant in different contexts and formalisms, and we compare the formalisms to each other. We clarify some basic concepts regarding factorization and how it exactly is applied in high energy QCD, and we make important notes on some key and fundamental poi…
I review the basics of the collinear factorization theorem applied primarily to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) involving forward parton distributions (PDFs) and the extensions of this theorem for exclusive processes probing non-forward parton distributions (GPDs), the generalized distribution amplitudes (GDAs) and the transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs). These QCD factorization theorem is an important tool in the description of hard processes in QCD. Whenever valid, it permits to represent the cross section or the scattering amplitude for such a process as a convolution in partonic mome…
Quarkonium production at low transverse momentum in hadron collisions can be used to extract Transverse-Momentum-Dependent(TMD) gluon distribution functions, if TMD factorization holds there. We show that TMD factorization for the case of P-wave quarkonium with $J^{PC}=0^{++}, 2^{++}$ holds at one-loop level, but is violated beyond one-loop level. TMD factorization for other P-wave quarkonium is also violated already at one-loop.
We provide a rigorous basis for factorization for a large class of non-leptonic two-body $B$-meson decays in the heavy-quark limit. The factorization formula incorporates elements of the naive factorization approach and the hard-scattering approach, but allows us to compute systematically radiative (``non-factorizable'') corrections to naive factorization for decays such as $B\to Dπ$ and $B\to ππ$. We discuss the factorization formula for a general final state from a general point of view. We then consider factorization for decays into heavy-light final states (such as $B\to Dπ$) in more detai…
