The contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the fermion triangle loop diagrams connected to the muon line by a photon and a $Z$ boson is reanalyzed in the unitary gauge. With use of the anomalous axial-vector Ward identity, it is shown that the calculation in the unitary gauge exactly coincides with the one in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge. The part which arises from the ordinary axial-vector Ward identity corresponds to the contribution of the neutral Goldstone boson. For the top-quark contribution, the one-parameter integral form is obtained up to the order of $m_μ^2/m_Z^2$. The results are compared with those obtained by the asymptotic expansion method.
We reconsider the constraints on Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) models arising from precision electroweak data. We take into account the subleading contributions from new physics (expressed in terms of the X,Y ... variables), as well as two loop corrections to the Standard Model rho parameter. For the case of one extra dimension, we obtain a lower bound on the inverse compactification scale M = R^{-1} of 600 GeV (at 90% confidence level), with a Higgs mass of 115 GeV. However, in contradiction to recent claims, we find that this constraint is significantly relaxed with increasing Higgs mass,…
In the absence of a tree-level scalar-field mass, renormalization-group methods permit the explicit summation of leading-logarithm contributions to all orders of the perturbative series within the effective potential for $SU(2)\times U(1)$ electroweak symmetry. This improvement of the effective potential function is seen to reduce residual dependence on the renormalization mass scale. The all-orders summation of leading logarithm terms involving the dominant three couplings contributing to radiative corrections is suggestive of a potential characterized by a plausible Higgs boson mass of 216 G…
We analyze and compute, within a number of standard model (SM) extensions, the cross sections $σ_{A\to VV'}$ for the production of a heavy neutral pseudoscalar Higgs boson/spin-zero resonance at the LHC and its subsequent decays into electroweak gauge bosons. For comparison we calculate also the corresponding cross sections for a heavy scalar. The SM extensions we consider include a type-II two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM), a 2HDM with 4 chiral fermion generations, the minimal supersymmetric extension of the SM (MSSM), and top-color assisted technicolour models. Presently available phenomenologi…
We study the electroweak vacuum stability in Type I seesaw models for 3 generations of neutrinos in scenarios where the right-handed neutrinos have explicit bare mass terms in the Lagrangian and where these are dynamically generated through the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking. To best highlight the difference of the two cases we concentrate on the absolute stability of the scalar potential. We observe that for the first scenario, the scale at which the scalar potential becomes unstable is lower from that within the Standard Model. In addition the Yukawa couplings $\mathbf{Y}_ν$ are …
A careful renormalization group analysis of the electroweak Standard Model, considered as a low energy effective theory, reveals that there is no hierarchy problem in the broken phase of the SM. In the broken phase a light Higgs turns out to be natural as it appears self-protected and self-tuned by the spontaneous symmetry breaking. It means that the scalar Higgs needs not be protected by any extra symmetry, specifically super symmetry, in order not to be much heavier than the other SM particles, which are protected by gauge- or chiral-symmetry. Thus the existence of quadratic cutoff effects i…
Having so far only indirect evidence for the existence of Dark Matter a plethora of experiments aims at direct detection of Dark Matter through the scattering of Dark Matter particles off atomic nuclei. For the correct interpretation and identification of the underlying nature of the Dark Matter constituents higher-order corrections to the cross section of Dark Matter-nucleon scattering are important, in particular in models where the tree-level cross section is negligibly small. In this work we revisit the electroweak corrections to the dark matter-nucleon scattering cross section in a model …
The discovery of the Higgs boson by the LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS has marked a milestone for particle physics. Yet, there are still many open questions that cannot be answered within the Standard Model (SM). For example, the generation of the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe through baryogenesis can only be explained qualitatively in the SM. A simple extension of the SM compatible with the current theoretical and experimental constraints is given by the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) where a second Higgs doublet is added to the Higgs sector. We investigate the possibility…
Using a manifestly gauge-invariant approach we show that the set of low-energy constants in the electroweak chiral Lagrangian currently used in the literature is redundant. In particular, by employing the equations of motion for the gauge fields, one can choose to remove two low-energy constants which contribute to the self-energies of the gauge bosons. The relation of this result to the experimentally determined values for the oblique parameters S,T and U is discussed. We then evaluate the matching relation between gauge-invariant Green's functions in the full and the effective theory for the…
The analytic continuation by duality (ACD) technique has been used to estimate the electroweak S parameter in technicolor models. In this letter, we investigate the reliability of this method by applying it to some toy models with known spectra. We find that in most instances the technique cannot be trusted to give a reliable result.
Electroweak one-loop radiative corrections to the process e^+ e^- -> t tbar are revisited. Two groups from Karlsruhe and Bielefeld/Zeuthen performed independent calculations of both (virtual and soft) QED contributions and weak virtual corrections. For the angular distribution an agreement of at least eight digits for the weak corrections and of at least seven digits for additional photonic corrections is established.
The current status of electroweak radiative corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is discussed. Asymptotic expansions for some important electroweak two loop top quark triangle diagrams are illustrated and extended to higher order. Results are compared with the more general integral representation solution for generic fermion triangle loops coupled to pseudoscalar and scalar bosons of arbitrary mass. Excellent agreement is found for a broader than expected range of mass parameters.
It is possible to place constraints on non-Standard-Model gauge-boson self-couplings and other new physics by studying their one-loop contributions to precisely measured observables. We extend previous analyses which constrain such nonstandard couplings, and we present the results in a compact and transparent form. Particular attention is given to comparing results for the light-Higgs scenario, where nonstandard effects are parameterized by an effective Lagrangian with a linear realization of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector, and the heavy-Higgs/strongly interacting scenario, described…
We investigate the mixing of an extra ${Z^0}^\prime$ with the standard $Z^0$ and mixings of exotic fermions with their standard counterparts through some precisely measured electroweak observables. These observables are geared to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We observe that although most of such mixings are severely constrained by the recent LEP data, some of the mixing angles could still be rather large, awaiting future tests.
Hadronic electroweak corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (g-2) are reviewed. Emphasis is on clarification of discrepancies among various published studies. A theorem on non-renormalization of the transversal part of a correlator of two vector currents and an axial current is reviewed and its consequences in the form of superconvergent sum rules are discussed.
After developing in ref.[1] a SU(2)left x U(1) gauge theory for J=0 mesons, I show in the case of two generations that: - the electroweak mass eigenstates differ, especially in the K and D sector, from what they are assumed to be on the basis of a classification by the SU(4) group of flavour; - a new mechanism for CP violation springs out, different from that of the standard model for quarks which requires at least three generations, and I construct a SU(2)left x U(1) gauge invariant Lagrangian which is not invariant by CP.
We point out that the swampland conjectures, forbidding the presence of global symmetries and (meta-)stable de Sitter vacua within quantum gravity, pick up a dynamical axion for the electroweak SU(2) gauge theory as a natural candidate for the quintessence field. The potential energy of the electroweak axion provides an attractive candidate for the dark energy. We discuss constraints from the weak gravity conjecture, from the conjecture of no global symmetry, and from observations, which can be satisfied elegantly in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model.
The high-temperature plasma above the electroweak scale $\sim 100$ GeV may have contained a primordial hypercharge magnetic field whose anomalous coupling to the fermions induces a transformation of the hypermagnetic energy density into fermionic number. In order to describe this process, we generalize the ordinary magnetohydrodynamical equations to the anomalous case. We show that a not completely homogeneous hypermagnetic background induces fermion number fluctuations, which can be expressed in terms of a generic hypermagnetic field configuration. We argue that, depending upon the various pa…
The uniqueness of the hypercharge assignments in the three fermion families leptoquark-bilepton $SU(3)_C \times SU(4)_L \times U(1)_N$ model is established. Although the gauge group contains an explicit U(1) factor, freedom from triangle anomalies combined with the requirement of nonvanishing charged fermion masses uniquely fix the electric charges of all fermions independently of the neutrinos being massless or not. The electric-charge quantization, family replication, and the existence of three colors are interwoven.
We revisit the calculation of electroweak bremsstrahlung contributions to dark matter annihilation. Dark matter annihilation to leptons is necessarily accompanied by electroweak radiative corrections, in which a $W$ or $Z$ boson is also radiated. Significantly, while many dark matter models feature a helicity suppressed annihilation rate to fermions, bremsstrahlung process can remove this helicity suppression such that the branching ratios Br($\ell νW $), Br($\ell^+\ell^-Z$), and Br($\barννZ$) dominate over Br($\ell^+\ell^-$) and Br($\barνν$). We find this is most significant in the limit wher…
Radiative corrections to the charged current Drell-Yan processes are revisited. Complete one-loop electroweak corrections are calculated within the automatic SANC system. Electroweak scheme dependence and the choice of the factorization scale are discussed. Comparisons with earlier calculations are presented.
We study the Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani mechanism for flavor-changing-neutral-currents suppression in both, the gauge and Higgs sectors, for models with $SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_N$ gauge symmetry. The models differ one from the other only with respect to the representation content. The main features of these models are that in order to cancel the triangle anomalies the number of families must be divisible by three (the number of colors) and that the lepton number is violated by some lepton-gauge bosons and lepton-scalar interactions.
We study an extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with a gauge group $SU(2)_1\otimes SU(2)_2$ breaking to $SU(2)_L$. The extra wino has an enhanced gauge coupling to the SM-like Higgs boson and, if light, has a relevant impact on the weak scale phenomenology. The low energy Higgs quartic coupling is modified both by extra $D$-term corrections and by a modification of its renormalization group evolution from high energies. At low values of $\tanβ$, the latter effect may be dominant. This leads to interesting regions of parameter space in which the model can accommodate a 125 Ge…
We discuss, within the framework of the Standard Model, the calculation of the two-loop electroweak contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon involving triangle fermionic loops of leptons and quarks. Because of the large ratios of masses involved, these contributions are rather large. The result we obtain differs from a previous estimate reported in the literature. The discrepancy originates in the cancellation of anomalies in $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$, a cancellation that requires the consideration of both leptons {\it and} quarks within each generation and that ha…
The rare decays of mesons are higher order effects in weak interactions. The main contributions to such decay processes are from the Z-penguin, the photonpenguin and the box diagram. At the quark level, these contributions are well known. However, when considering the corresponding physical hadronic processes, a knowledge of how hadronic states are expressed in terms of quarks. In this paper, we suggest a simplistic way to relate the quark level process to the hadronic process. For simplicity, we consider here only the decays of pseudoscalar mesons. The meson-quark coupling is described in ter…
The electroweak phase transition and the sphaleron decoupling condition in the MSSM are revisited taking the latest experimental data into account. The light Higgs boson scenario and the ordinary decoupling limit which are classified by the relative size between the CP-odd Higgs boson mass and Z boson mass are considered within the context of electroweak baryogenesis. We investigate v/T at not only the critical temperature at which the effective potential has two degenerate minima but also the nucleation temperature of the critical bubbles, where v is a vacuum expectation value of the Higgs bo…
We study the phenomenological consequences of a four site Higgsless model based on the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_1 x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_Y gauge symmetry, which predicts two neutral and four charged extra gauge bosons, Z_{1,2} and W_{1,2}. The model represents an extension of the minimal three site version (or BESS model), largely investigated in the literature, which includes three heavy vector bosons. We compute the properties of the new particles, and derive indirect and direct limits on their masses and couplings from LEP and Tevatron data and from the perturbative unitarity requirements. In contrast to …
The angle $γ$ of the standard CKM unitarity triangle can be determined from tree-level $B$-meson decays essentially without hadronic uncertainties. We calculate the second-order electroweak corrections for the $B \to D π$ modes and show that their impact on the determination of $γ$ could be enhanced by an accidental cancellation of poorly known hadronic matrix elements. However, we do not expect the resulting shift in $γ$ to exceed $\big|δγ^{Dπ} /γ\big| \lesssim {\mathcal O}\big(10^{-4}\big)$.
We present a general procedure for obtaining the coefficients of the scalar bubble and triangle integral functions of one-loop amplitudes. Coefficients are extracted by considering two-particle and triple unitarity cuts of the corresponding bubble and triangle integral functions. After choosing a specific parameterisation of the cut loop momentum we can uniquely identify the coefficients of the desired integral functions simply by examining the behaviour of the cut integrand as the unconstrained parameters of the cut loop momentum approach infinity. In this way we can produce compact forms for…
The $B\toπK$ decays with significant electroweak penguin contributions show a puzzling pattern. We explore this "$B\toπK$ puzzle" through a systematic strategy. The starting point, which is essentially unaffected by electroweak penguins, is the determination of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle through the CP-violating $B^0_d\toπ^+π^-$, $B^0_d\toπ^-K^+$ asymmetries, yielding $γ=(73.9^{+5.8}_{-6.5})^\circ$, and the extraction of hadronic parameters through the measured $B\toππ$ branching ratios. Using arguments related to the SU(3) flavour symmetry, we convert the hadronic $B\toππ$ parame…
In this note we revisit the SUSY effects in $R_b$ under current experimental constraints including the LHC Higgs data, the $B$-physics measurements, the dark matter relic density and direct detection limits, as well as the precision electroweak data. We first perform a scan to figure out the currently allowed parameter space and then display the SUSY effects in $R_b$. We find that although the SUSY parameter space has been severely restrained by current experimental data, both the general MSSM and the natural-SUSY scenario can still alter $R_b$ with a magnitude sizable enough to be observed at…
Direct and indirect searches of the Higgs boson suggest that 113 GeV $\lesssim m_H \lesssim$ 170 GeV is likely. With the LEP era over and the Tevatron Run II search via $p\bar p \to WH+X$ arduous, we revisit a case where $WH$ or $ZH +$ jets could arise via strong $b^\prime\bar b^\prime$ pair production. In contrast to 10 years ago, the tight electroweak constraint on $t^\prime$--$b^\prime$ (hence $t^\prime$--$t$) splitting reduces FCNC $b^\prime\to bZ$, $bH$ rates, making $b^\prime\to cW$ naturally competitive. Such a "cocktail solution" is precisely the mix that could evade the CDF search for…
The LHC enters era of the Standard Model Z-boson couplings precise measurements, to match precision of LEP. The calculations of electroweak (EW) corrections in the Monte Carlo generators become of relevance. Precise predictions of Z-boson production and decay require classes of QED/EW/QCD corrections, preferably in the manner which allows for separation from the QCD dynamics of the production. At LEP, calculations, genuine weak and lineshape corrections were introduced into electroweak form-factors and Improved Born Approximation. This was well suited for so-called doubly-deconvoluted observab…
We study constraints on the supersymmetric standard model from the updated electroweak precision measurements --- the Z-pole experiments and the $W$-boson mass measurements. The supersymmetric-particle contributions to the universal gauge-boson-propagator corrections are parametrized by the three oblique parameters Sz, Tz and mw. The oblique corrections, the Zqq and Zll vertex corrections, and the vertex and box corrections to the μ-decay width are separately studied in detail. We first study individual contribution from the four sectors of the model, the squarks, the sleptons, the supersymmet…
The Higgs boson of 125 GeV requires large stop masses, leading to the large $μ$-parameter in most cases of gauge mediation. On the other hand, the explanation for the muon $g-2$ anomaly needs small slepton and neutralino/chargino masses. Such disparity in masses may be obtained from a mass splitting of colored and non-colored messenger fields. However, even if the required small slepton and neutralino/chargino masses are realized, all parameter regions consistent with the muon g-2 are excluded by the recent updated ATLAS result on the wino search in the case that the messenger fields are in ${…
We re-examine the implications of allowing fermion fields to propagate in the five-dimensional bulk of the Randall-Sundrum (RS) localized gravity model. We find that mixing between the Standard Model top quark and its Kaluza Klein excitations generates large contributions to the rho parameter and consequently restricts the fundamental RS scale to lie above 100 TeV. To circumvent this bound we propose a `mixed' scenario which localizes the third generation fermions on the TeV brane and allows the lighter generations to propagate in the full five-dimensional bulk. We show that this construction …
Motivated by the large difference between the direct CP asymmetries $A_{CP}(B^-\to π^0 K^-)$ and $A_{CP}(\bar{B}^{0}\to π^{+} K^{-})$, we combine the up-to-date experimental information on $B\toπK$, $πK^{\ast}$ and $ρK$ decays to pursue possible solutions with the nonuniversal $Z^{\prime}$ model. Detailed analyses of the relative impacts of different types of couplings are presented in four specific cases. Numerically, we find that the new coupling parameters, $ξ^{LL}$ and $ξ^{LR}$ with a common nontrivial new weak phase $ϕ_L\sim-86^{\circ}$, which are relevant to the $Z^{\prime}$ contribution…
The electroweak process $p\bar p \to \ell^\pmνγγ$ is calculated at tree level, including finite W width effects. In order to obtain a gauge invariant amplitude, the imaginary parts of $WWγ$ triangle graphs and $WWγγ$ box diagrams have to be included, in addition to resumming the imaginary contributions to the W polarization. We demonstrate the existence of a radiation amplitude zero in $p\bar p \to W^\pm γγ\to \ell^\pmνγγ$, and discuss how it may be observed in correlations of the $γγ$ and lepton rapidities at the Fermilab Tevatron.

We propose an Abelian gauged version of the singlet-doublet fermionic dark matter (DM) model where DM, combination of a vector like fermion doublet and a fermion singlet, is naturally stabilised by the gauge symmetry without requiring any ad-hoc discrete symmetries. In order to have good detection prospects at collider experiments like the large hadron collider (LHC) and enlarged parameter space for low mass DM, we consider the additional gauge symmetry to be based on the quantum $B-3L_τ$ where the restriction to third generation of leptons is chosen to have weaker bounds from the LHC on the c…
The axion couplings to SM gauge bosons are derived in various models, and shown to always arise entirely from non-anomalous fermion loops. They are thus independent of the anomaly structure of the model. This fact is without consequence for vector gauge interactions like QCD and QED, but has a major impact for chiral gauge theories. For example, in the DFSZ axion model, the couplings of axions to electroweak gauge bosons do not follow the pattern expected from chiral anomalies, as we prove by an explicit calculation. The reason for this mismatch is traced back to triangle Feynman diagrams sens…
Generic D-brane string models of particle physics predict the existence of extra U(1) gauge symmetries beyond hypercharge. These symmetries are not of the E_6 class but rather include the gauging of Baryon and Lepton numbers as well as certain Peccei-Quinn-like symmetries. Some of the U(1)'s have triangle anomalies, but they are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. The corresponding gauge bosons typically acquire a mass of order the string scale M_S by combining with two-index antisymmetric fields coming from the closed string sector of the theory. We argue that in string models with a low …
