The main objective of this paper is to study the size of a typical cluster of bond percolation on each of the five Platonic solids: the tetrahedron, the cube, the octahedron, the dodecahedron and the icosahedron. Looking at the clusters from a dynamical point of view, i.e., comparing the clusters with birth processes, we first prove that the first and second moments of the cluster size are bounded by their counterparts in a certain branching process, which results in explicit upper bounds that are accurate when the density of open edges is small. Using that vertices surrounded by closed edges cannot be reached by an open path, we also derive upper bounds that, on the contrary, are accurate when the density of open edges is large. These upper bounds hold in fact for all regular graphs. Specializing in the five~Platonic solids, the exact value of (or lower bounds for) the first and second moments are obtained from the inclusion-exclusion principle and a computer program. The goal of our program is not to simulate the stochastic process but to compute exactly sums of integers that are too large to be computed by hand so these results are analytical, not numerical.
Motivated by network resilience and insurance premiums in the context of cyber security, we derive universal upper bounds for the first and second moments of the size of bond percolation clusters on finite regular graphs. Thinking of the clusters as dynamical objects coupled with branching processes gives a first set of bounds that are accurate when the probability of an edge being open is small. Estimating the number of isolated vertices, we also obtain a second set of bounds that are accurate when the probability of an edge being closed is small. As an illustration, we apply our results to t…
We investigate a limit theorem on traversable length inside semi-cylinder in the 2-dimensional supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation, which gives an extension of Theorem 2 in Grimmett(1981). This type of limit theorems was originally studied for the extinction time for the 1-dimensional contact process on a finite interval in Wagner and Anantharam(2005). Actually, our main result Theorem 2.1 is stated under a rather general 2-dimensional bond percolation setting.
We use the connection between bond percolation and SIR epidemics to establish lower bounds for the critical percolation probability in $2$ and $3$ dimensions as the range becomes large. The bound agrees with the conjectured asymptotics for the long range critical probability, refines results of M. Penrose, and complements results of van der Hofstad and Sakai in dimensions greater than $6$.
An upper bound for the critical probability of long range bond percolation in $d=2$ and $d=3$ is obtained by connecting the bond percolation with the SIR epidemic model, thus complementing the lower bound result in Frei and Perkins arXiv:arch-ive/1603.04130. A key ingredient is that we establish a uniform bound for the local times of branching random walk by calculating their exponential moments and by using the discrete versions of Tanaka's formula and Garsia's Lemma.
For the d-dimensional model of a subcritical bond percolation (p<p_c) and a point \vec{a} in Z^d, we prove that a cluster conditioned on connecting points (0,...,0) and n\vec{a} if scaled by 1/(n|vec{a}|) along \vec{a} and by 1/sqrt{n} in the orthogonal direction converges asymptotically to Time x (d-1)-dimensional Brownian Bridge.
On a large finite connected graph let edges $e$ become "open" at independent random Exponential times of arbitrary rates $w_e$. Under minimal assumptions, the time at which a giant component starts to emerge is weakly concentrated around its mean.
We consider Bernoulli bond percolation on oriented regular trees, where besides the usual short bonds, all bonds of a certain length are added. Independently, short bonds are open with probability $p$ and long bonds are open with probability $q$. We study properties of the critical curve which delimits the set of pairs $(p,q)$ for which there are almost surely no infinite paths. We also show that this curve decreases with respect to the length of the long bonds.
We consider a dilute lattice obtained from the usual $\mathbb{Z}^3$ lattice by removing independently each of its columns with probability $1-ρ$. In the remaining dilute lattice independent Bernoulli bond percolation with parameter $p$ is performed. Let $ρ\mapsto p_c(ρ)$ be the critical curve which divides the subcritical and supercritical phases. We study the behavior of this curve near the disconnection threshold $ρ_c = p_c^{\text{site}}(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ and prove that, uniformly over $ρ$ it remains strictly below $1/2$ (the critical point for bond percolation on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}…
Tile (\mathbb{R}^2\) into disjoint unit squares (\{S_k\}_{k \geq 0}\) with the origin being the centre of \(S_0\) and say that (S_i\) and (S_j\) are star adjacent if they share a corner and plus adjacent if they share an edge. Every square is either vacant or occupied. Outermost boundaries of finite star and plus connected components frequently arise in the context of contour analysis in percolation and random graphs. In this paper, we derive the outermost boundaries for finite star and plus connected components using a piecewise cycle merging algorithm. For plus connected components, the oute…
Consider an independent site percolation model with parameter $p \in (0,1)$ on $\Z^d,\ d\geq 2$ where there are only nearest neighbor bonds and long range bonds of length $k$ parallel to each coordinate axis. We show that the percolation threshold of such model converges to $p_c(\Z^{2d})$ when $k$ goes to infinity, the percolation threshold for ordinary (nearest neighbour) percolation on $\Z^{2d}$. We also generalize this result for models whose long range bonds have several lengths.
In this paper, we alternately obtain the almost sure uniqueness of the infinite open cluster in bond percolation in $\mathbb{Z}^d, d \geq 2,$ without requiring the use of ergodicity of translation action. If $N$ denotes the number of infinite open clusters, we use the Burton-Keane argument to get $N \in \{0,1,2\}$ a.s. and then use a pivotal edges argument to obtain that $N \in \{0,1\}$ a.s.
Consider an anisotropic independent bond percolation model on the $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice, $d\geq 2$, with parameter $p$. We show that the two point connectivity function $P_{p}(\{(0,\dots,0)\leftrightarrow (n,0,\dots,0)\})$ is a monotone function in $n$ when the parameter $p$ is close enough to 0. Analogously, we show that truncated connectivity function $P_{p}(\{(0,\dots,0)\leftrightarrow (n,0,\dots,0), (0,\dots,0)\nleftrightarrow\infty\})$ is also a monotone function in $n$ when $p$ is close to 1.
We consider an i.i.d. supercritical bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, every edge is open with a probability $p > p_c (d)$, where $p_c (d)$ denotes the critical parameter for this percolation. We know that there exists almost surely a unique infinite open cluster $C_p$ [7]. We are interested in the regularity properties in p of the anchored isoperimetric profile of the infinite cluster $C_p$. For $d\ge2$, we prove that the anchored isoperimetric profile defined in [4] is Lipschitz continuous on all intervals $[p_0 , p_1 ] \subset (p_c (d), 1)$.
We consider anisotropic independent bond percolation models on the slab $\Z^2\times\{0,\dots,k\}$, where we suppose that the axial (vertical) bonds are open with probability $p$, while the radial (horizontal) bonds are open with probability $q$. We study the critical curves for these models and establish their continuity and strict monotonicity.
We consider the anchored isoperimetric profile of the infinite open cluster, defined for $p > p\_c$, whose existence has been recently proved in [3]. We extend adequately the definition for $p = p\_c$, in finite boxes. We prove a partial result which implies that, if the limit defining the anchored isoperimetric profile at $p\_c$ exists, it has to vanish.
We consider the bond percolation model on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ ($d\ge 2$) with the constraint to be fully connected. Each edge is open with probability $p\in(0,1)$, closed with probability $1-p$ and then the process is conditioned to have a unique open connected component (bounded or unbounded). The model is defined on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by passing to the limit for a sequence of finite volume models with general boundary conditions. Several questions and problems are investigated: existence, uniqueness, phase transition, DLR equations. Our main result involves the existence of a threshold $0…
We construct the uniform infinite planar map (UIPM), obtained as the n \to \infty local limit of planar maps with n edges, chosen uniformly at random. We then describe how the UIPM can be sampled using a "peeling" process, in a similar way as for uniform triangulations. This process allows us to prove that for bond and site percolation on the UIPM, the percolation thresholds are p_c^bond=1/2 and p_c^site=2/3 respectively. This method also works for other classes of random infinite planar maps, and we show in particular that for bond percolation on the uniform infinite planar quadrangulation, t…
We investigate bond percolation on the iterated barycentric subdivision of a triangle, the hexacarpet, and the non-p.c.f. Sierpinski gasket. With the use of the diamond fractal, we are able to bound the critical probability of percolation on the non-p.c.f. gasket and the iterated barycentric subdivision of a triangle from above by 0.282. We then show how both the gasket and hexacarpet fractals are related via the iterated barycentric subdivisions of a triangle: the two spaces exhibit duality properties although they are not themselves dual graphs. Finally we show the existence of a non-trivial…
Consider an independent site percolation model on $\Z^d,\ d\geq 2$, with parameter $p \in (0,1)$, where there are only nearest neighbor bonds and long range bonds of length $k$ parallel to some coordinate axis. We show that the percolation probability is a non-decreasing function of $k$. We also generalize this result for models whose long range bonds have several lengths.
In this paper we present the proof of the convergence of the critical bond percolation exploration process on the square lattice to the trace of SLE$_{6}$. This is an important conjecture in mathematical physics and probability. The case of critical site percolation on the hexagonal lattice was established in the seminal work of Smirnov via proving Cardy's formula. Our proof uses a series of transformations and conditioning to construct a pair of paths: the $+\partial$CBP and the $-\partial$CBP. The convergence in the site percolation case on the hexagonal lattice allows us to obtain certain e…
Let $d\geq 2$. We consider an i.i.d. supercritical bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, every edge is open with a probability $p>p_c(d)$, where $p_c(d)$ denotes the critical point. We condition on the event that $0$ belongs to the infinite cluster $\mathcal{C}_\infty$ and we consider connected subgraphs of $\mathcal{C}_\infty$ having at most $n^d$ vertices and containing $0$. Among these subgraphs, we are interested in the ones that minimize the open edge boundary size to volume ratio. These minimizers properly rescaled converge towards a translate of a deterministic shape and their open edge b…
We study the isoperimetric subgraphs of the giant component $\textbf{C}_n$ of supercritical bond percolation on the square lattice. These are subgraphs of $\textbf{C}_n$ having minimal edge boundary to volume ratio. In contrast to the work of Biskup, Louidor, Procaccia and Rosenthal, the edge boundary is taken only within $\textbf{C}_n$ instead of the full infinite cluster. The isoperimetric subgraphs are shown to converge almost surely, after rescaling, to the collection of optimizers of a continuum isoperimetric problem emerging naturally from the model. We also show that the Cheeger constan…
We study the isoperimetric subgraphs of the infinite cluster $\textbf{C}_\infty$ for supercritical bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d\geq 3$. Specifically, we consider the subgraphs of $\textbf{C}_\infty \cap [-n,n]^d$ which have minimal open edge boundary to volume ratio. We prove a shape theorem for these subgraphs, obtaining that when suitably rescaled, these subgraphs converge almost surely to a translate of a deterministic shape. This deterministic shape is itself an isoperimetric set for a norm we construct. As a corollary, we obtain sharp asymptotics on a natural modification of…
Any infinite graph has site and bond percolation critical probabilities satisfying $p_c^{site}\geq p_c^{bond}$. The strict version of this inequality holds for many, but not all, infinite graphs. In this paper, the class of graphs for which the strict inequality holds is extended to a continuum percolation model. In Gilbert's graph with supercritical density on the Euclidean plane, there is almost surely a unique infinite connected component. We show that on this component $p_c^{site} > p_c^{bond}$. This also holds in higher dimensions.
We consider Bernoulli hyper-edge percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. This model is a generalization of Bernoulli bond percolation. An edge connects exactly two vertices and a hyper-edge connects more than two vertices. As in the classical Bernoulli bond percolation, we open hyper-edges independently in a homogeneous manner with certain probabilities parameterized by a parameter $u\in[0,1]$. We discuss conditions for non-trivial phase transitions when $u$ varies. We discuss the conditions for the uniqueness of the infinite cluster. Also, we provide conditions under which the Grimmett-Marstrand type …
Two vertices are said to be finitely connected if they belong to the same cluster and this cluster is finite. We derive sharp asymptotics for finite connection probabilities for supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation on Z^2.
Information is a key component in determining the price of an asset in financial markets, and the main objective of this paper is to study the spread of information in this context. The network of interactions in financial markets is modeled using a Galton-Watson tree where vertices represent the traders and where two traders are connected by an edge if one of the two traders sells the asset to the other trader. The information starts from a given vertex and spreads through the edges of the graph going independently from seller to buyer with probability $p$ and from buyer to seller with probab…
We consider different problems within the general theme of long-range percolation on oriented graphs. Our aim is to settle the so-called truncation question, described as follows. We are given probabilities that certain long-range oriented bonds are open; assuming that the sum of these probabilities is infinite, we ask if the probability of percolation is positive when we truncate the graph, disallowing bonds of range above a possibly large but finite threshold. We give some conditions in which the answer is affirmative. We also translate some of our results on oriented percolation to the cont…
We consider some problems related to the truncation question in long-range percolation. It is given probabilities that certain long-range oriented bonds are open; assuming that this probabilities are not summable, we ask if the probability of percolation is positive when we truncate the graph, disallowing bonds of range above a possibly large but finite threshold. This question is still open if the set of vertices is $\Z^2$. We give some conditions in which the answer is affirmative. One of these results generalize the previous result in [Alves, Hilário, de Lima, Valesin, Journ. Stat. Phys. {\…
We prove Ornstein-Zernike behaviour in every direction for finite connection functions of bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ for $d\geq3$ when $p,$ the probability of occupation of a bond, is sufficiently close to $1.$ Moreover, we prove that equi-decay surfaces are locally analytic, strictly convex, with positive Gaussian curvature.
We present a coupled decreasing sequence of random walks on $ \mathbb Z $ that dominates the edge process of oriented-bond percolation in two dimensions. Using the concept of "random walk in a strip ", we construct an algorithm that generates an increasing sequence of lower bounds that converges to the critical probability of oriented-bond percolation. Numerical calculations of the first ten lower bounds thereby generated lead to an improved,i.e. higher, rigorous lower bound to this critical probability, viz. $p_{c} \geq 0.63328 $. Finally a computer simulation technique is presented; the use …
Percolation in complex networks is viewed as both: a process that mimics network degradation and a tool that reveals peculiarities of the underlying network structure. During the course of percolation, networks undergo non-trivial transformations that include a phase transition in the connectivity, and in some special cases, multiple phase transitions. Here we establish a generic analytic theory that describes how structure and sizes of all connected components in the network are affected by simple and colour-dependant bond percolations. This theory predicts all locations where the phase trans…
We investigate Laplacians on supercritical bond-percolation graphs with different boundary conditions at cluster borders. The integrated density of states of the Dirichlet Laplacian is found to exhibit a Lifshits tail at the lower spectral edge, while that of the Neumann Laplacian shows a van Hove asymptotics, which results from the percolating cluster. At the upper spectral edge, the behaviour is reversed.
Let G_n be a sequence of finite transitive graphs with vertex degree d=d(n) and |G_n|=n. Denote by p^t(v,v) the return probability after t steps of the non-backtracking random walk on G_n. We show that if p^t(v,v) has quasi-random properties, then critical bond-percolation on G_n has a scaling window of width n^{-1/3}, as it would on a random graph. A consequence of our theorems is that if G_n is a transitive expander family with girth at least (2/3 + eps) \log_{d-1} n, then the size of the largest component in p-bond-percolation with p={1 +O(n^{-1/3}) \over d-1} is roughly n^{2/3}. In particu…
All (in)homogeneous bond percolation models on the square, triangular, and hexagonal lattices belong to the same universality class, in the sense that they have identical critical exponents at the critical point (assuming the exponents exist). This is proved using the star-triangle transformation and the box-crossing property. The exponents in question are the one-arm exponent $ρ$, the 2j-alternating-arms exponents $ρ_{2j}$ for $j\ge1$, the volume exponent $δ$, and the connectivity exponent $η$. By earlier results of Kesten, this implies universality also for the near-critical exponents $β$, $…
In an investigation of percolation on isoradial graphs, we prove the criticality of canonical bond percolation on isoradial embeddings of planar graphs, thus extending celebrated earlier results for homogeneous and inhomogeneous square, triangular, and other lattices. This is achieved via the star-triangle transformation, by transporting the box-crossing property across the family of isoradial graphs. As a consequence, we obtain the universality of these models at the critical point, in the sense that the one-arm and 2j-alternating-arm critical exponents (and therefore also the connectivity an…
\emph{Full-bond percolation} with parameter $p$ is the process in which, given a graph, for every edge independently, we delete the edge with probability $1-p$. Bond percolation is motivated by problems in mathematical physics and it is studied in parallel computing and network science to understand the resilience of distributed systems to random link failure and the spread of information in networks through unreliable links. Full-bond percolation is also equivalent to the \emph{Reed-Frost process}, a network version of \emph{SIR} epidemic spreading, in which the graph represents contacts amon…
The star-triangle transformation is used to obtain an equivalence extending over the set of all (in)homogeneous bond percolation models on the square, triangular and hexagonal lattices. Among the consequences are box-crossing (RSW) inequalities for such models with parameter-values at which the transformation is valid. This is a step toward proving the universality and conformality of these processes. It implies criticality of such values, thereby providing a new proof of the critical point of inhomogeneous systems. The proofs extend to certain isoradial models to which previous methods do not…
Bond-percolation graphs are random subgraphs of the d-dimensional integer lattice generated by a standard bond-percolation process. The associated graph Laplacians, subject to Dirichlet or Neumann conditions at cluster boundaries, represent bounded, self-adjoint, ergodic random operators with off-diagonal disorder. They possess almost surely the non-random spectrum [0,4d] and a self-averaging integrated density of states. The integrated density of states is shown to exhibit Lifshits tails at both spectral edges in the non-percolating phase. While the characteristic exponent of the Lifshits tai…
We study the percolation model on Boltzmann triangulations using a generating function approach. More precisely, we consider a Boltzmann model on the set of finite planar triangulations, together with a percolation configuration (either site-percolation or bond-percolation) on this triangulation. By enumerating triangulations with boundaries according to both the boundary length and the number of vertices/edges on the boundary, we are able to identify a phase transition for the geometry of the origin cluster. For instance, we show that the probability that a percolation interface has length n …
Consider the class of k-independent bond, respectively site, percolations with parameter p on an infinite tree T. We derive tight bounds on p for both a.s. percolation and a.s. nonpercolation. The bounds are continuous functions of k and the branching number of T. This extends previous results by Lyons for the independent case (k=0) and by Bollobàs & Balister for 1-independent bond percolations. Central to our argumentation are moment method bounds à la Lyons supplemented by explicit percolation models à la Bollobàs & Balister. An indispensable tool is the minimality and explicit construction …
In this paper, we derive theoretical bounds for the long-term influence of a node in an Independent Cascade Model (ICM). We relate these bounds to the spectral radius of a particular matrix and show that the behavior is sub-critical when this spectral radius is lower than $1$. More specifically, we point out that, in general networks, the sub-critical regime behaves in $O(\sqrt{n})$ where $n$ is the size of the network, and that this upper bound is met for star-shaped networks. We apply our results to epidemiology and percolation on arbitrary networks, and derive a bound for the critical value…
We report on the exact treatment of a random-matrix representation of bond percolation model on a square lattice in two dimensions with occupation probability $p$. The percolation problem is mapped onto a random complex matrix composed of two random real-valued matrices of elements $+1$ and $-1$ with probability $p$ and $1-p$, respectively. We find that the onset of percolation transition can be detected by the emergence of power-law divergences due to the coalescence of the first two extreme eigenvalues in the thermodynamic limit. We develop a universal finite-size scaling law that fully char…
We study the effect of positive correlations on the critical threshold of site and bond percolation in a square lattice with d = 2. We propose two algorithms for generating dependent lattices with minimal correlation length and non-negative n-point correlations whose critical behavior is then compared with that of independent lattices. For site percolation, we show numerically that the introduction of this specific form of positive correlation results in a lower percolation threshold, i.e., higher connectivity. For bond percolation, the opposite is observed. In this case, however, we show that…
We address the question of how a localized microscopic defect, especially if it is small with respect to certain dynamic parameters, affects the macroscopic behavior of a system. In particular we consider two classical exactly solvable models: Ulam's problem of the maximal increasing sequence and the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. For the first model, using its representation as a Poissonian version of directed last passage percolation on $\mathbb R^2$, we introduce the defect by placing a positive density of extra points along the diagonal line. For the latter, the defect is pro…
