An embedded curve in a symplectic surface $Σ\subset X$ defines a smooth deformation space $\mathcal{B}$ of nearby embedded curves. A key idea of Kontsevich and Soibelman arXiv:1701.09137 [math.AG], is to equip the symplectic surface $X$ with a foliation in order to study the deformation space $\mathcal{B}$. The foliation, together with a vector space $V_Σ$ of meromorphic differentials on $Σ$, endows an embedded curve $Σ$ with the structure of the initial data of topological recursion, which defines a collection of symmetric tensors on $V_Σ$. Kontsevich and Soibelman define an Airy structure on $V_Σ$ to be a formal quadratic Lagrangian $\mathcal{L}\subset T^*(V_Σ^*)$ which leads to an alternative construction of the tensors of topological recursion. In this paper we produce a formal series $θ$ on $\mathcal{B}$ of meromorphic differentials on $Σ$ which takes it values in $\mathcal{L}$, and use this to produce the Donagi-Markman cubic from a natural cubic tensor on $V_Σ$, giving a generalisation of a result of Baraglia and Huang, arXiv:1707.04975 [math.DG].
We establish the Airy curve case of a conjecture of Gukov and Sułkowski by reducing to Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde Virasoro constraints satisfied by the intersection numbers on moduli spaces of algebraic curves.
We propose a new approach to the topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin based on the notion of Airy structure, which we introduce in the paper. We explain why Airy structure is a more fundamental object than the one of the spectral curve. We explain how the concept of quantization of Airy structure leads naturally to the formulas of topological recursion as well as their generalizations. The notion of spectral curve is also considered in a more general framework of Poisson surfaces endowed with foliation. We explain how the deformation theory of spectral curves is related to Airy structures. …
We construct locally defined symplectic torus actions on ribbon graph complexes. Symplectic reduction techniques allow for a recursive formula for the symplectic volumes of these spaces. Taking the Laplace transform results in the Eynard-Orantin recursion formulas for the Airy curve x = y^2 / 2.
For a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ we define a system of linear ODEs with polynomial coefficients, which we call the topological equation of $\mathfrak g$-type. The dimension of the space of solutions regular at infinity is equal to the rank of the Lie algebra. For the simplest example $\mathfrak g=sl_2(\mathbb C)$ the regular solution can be expressed via products of Airy functions and their derivatives; this matrix valued function was used in our previous work for computing logarithmic derivatives of the Witten - Kontsevich tau-function. For an arbitrary simple Lie algebra we construct a…
A class of Hamiltonian deformations of plane curves is defined and studied. Hamiltonian deformations of conics and cubics are considered as illustrative examples. These deformations are described by systems of hydrodynamical type equations. It is shown that solutions of these systems describe processes of formation of singularities (cusps, nodes), bubbles, and change of genus of a curve.
We introduce the notion of microlocal versal deformation of a plane curve. We construct equisingular versal deformations of Legendrian curves that are the conormal of a semi-quasi-homogeneous branch.
We construct infinitesimal deformations on an open domain of a smooth projective surface given by a complement of plumbings of disjoint linear chains of smooth rational curves. We show that the infinitesimal deformations are not small deformations, that is, they change the complex structure away from the boundary of the domain.
Let C_1 and C_2 be two degenerations of genus g curves. We prove that if two degenerations defines the same conjugacy classes in the mapping class group, they are equivalent under analytic deformations.
We study integral representations of holomorphic differentials on the Oort-Sekiguci-Suwa component of deformations of curves with cyclic group actions.
A primitive multiple curve is a Cohen-Macaulay irreducible projective curve Y that can be locally embedded in a smooth surface, and such that the associated reduced curve Y_red is smooth. The subject of this paper is the study of deformations of Y in curves with smooth irreducible components, when the number of components is maximal (it is then the multiplicity n of Y). We are particularly interested in deformations in n disjoint smooth irreducible components, which are called fragmented deformations. We describe them completely. We give also a characterization of primitive multiple curves hav…
We relate the equianalytic and the equisingular deformations of a reduced complex plane curve to the Jacobian syzygies of its defining equation. Several examples and conjectures involving rational cuspidal curves are discussed.
A tetragonal canonical curve is the complete intersection of two divisors on a scroll. The equations can be written in `rolling factors' format. For such homogeneous ideals we give methods to compute infinitesimal deformations. Deformations can be obstructed. For the case of quadratic equations on the scroll we derive explicit base equations. They are used to study extensions of tetragonal curves.
In this article, we study the deformation theory of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve. As a special case, the infinitesimal deformation of these objects gives the tangent space of the corresponding moduli spaces, which can be used to calculate the dimension of the corresponding moduli space. We show that the deformation of locally free sheaves and Hitchin pairs over a nodal curve is equivalent to the deformation of generalized parabolic bundles and generalized parabolic Hitchin pairs over the normalization of the nodal curve respectively.
We consider non-commutative deformations of sheaves on algebraic varieties. We develop some tools to determine parameter algebras of versal non-commutative deformations for partial simple collections and the structure sheaves of smooth rational curves. We apply them to universal flopping contractions of length 2 and higher. We confirm Donovan-Wemyss conjecture in the case of deformations of Laufer's flops.
We show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. In Theorem 1.1 we list integers can be attained as Milnor numbers of a given semi-quasi-homogeneous singularity.
We reduce the study of the Krull dimension d of the deformation ring of the functor of deformations of curves with automorphisms to the study of the tangent space of the deformation functor of a class of matrix representations of the p-part of the decomposition groups at wild ramified points, and we give a method in order to compute d.
In this paper, we study deformations of pairs (C,G) where G is a height 2 BT(or BT_n) group over a complete curve on algebraically closed field k of characteristic p. We prove that, if the curve C is a versal deformation of G, then there exists a unique lifting of the pair to the Witt ring W. We apply this result in the case of Shimura curves to obtain a lifting criterion.
We study the deformation theory of nonsigular projective curves defined over algebraic closed fields of positive characteristic. We show that under some assumptions the local deformation problem for automorphisms of powerseries can be reduced to a deformation problem for matrix representations. We study both equicharacteristic and mixed deformations in the case of two dimensional representations.
We provide a method to compute the dimension of the tangent space to the global infinitesimal deformation functor of a curve together with a subgroup of the group of automorphisms. The computational techniques we developed are applied to several examples including Fermat curves, $p$-cyclic covers of the affine line and to Lehr-Matignon curves.
Let $C$ be an isolated plane curve singularity, and $(C,l)$ be a decorated curve. In this article we compare the equisingular deformations of $C$ and the sandwiched singularity $X(C,l)$. We will prove that for $l \gg 0$ the functor of equisingular deformations of $C$ and $(C,l)$ are equivalent. From this we deduce a proof of a formula for the dimension of the equisingular stratum. Furthermore we will show how compute the equisingularity ideal of the curve singularity $C$, given the minimal (good) resolution of $C$.
We study deformations of plane curve singularities from an analytic point of view and obtain some new concrete results. We show some rather unexpected properties of Puiseux coefficients treated as functions on a suitably defined parameter space. The methods used in paper are very elementary.
We prove that given any $n$-pointed prestable curve $C$ of genus $g$ with linearly reductive automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(C)$, there exists an ${\rm Aut}(C)$-equivariant miniversal deformation of $C$ over an affine variety $W$. In other words, we prove that the algebraic stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ parametrizing $n$-pointed prestable curves of genus $g$ has an étale neighborhood of $[C]$ isomorphic to the quotient stack $[W / {\rm Aut}(C)]$.
We give a $δ$-constant criterion for equinormalizability of deformations of isolated (not necessarily reduced) curve singularities over smooth base spaces of dimension $\geq 1$. For one-parametric families of isolated curve singularities, we show that their topologically triviality is equivalent to the admission of weak simultaneous resolutions.
The aim of this paper is to show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. Main result states that if $f$ is irreducible and nondegenerate, by deforming $f$ one can attain all Milnor numbers ranging from $μ(f)$ to $μ(f)-r(p-r)$, where $r$ and $p$ are easily computed from the Newton diagram of $f$.
The versal deformation space of a smooth rational curve in a smooth complex threefold is explicitly computed under certain hypotheses. Under an additional hypothesis, the versal deformation space is then shown to be the variety of critical points of a holomorphic function, the superpotential, as predicted by the consideration of D-branes in string theory.
We give an alternative approach to the computation of the dimension of the tangent space of the deformation space of curves with automorphisms. A homological version of the local-global principle similar to the one of J.Bertin, A. Mézard is proved, and a computation in the case of ordinary curves is obtained, by application of the results of S. Nakajima for the Galois module structure of the space of 2-holomorphic differentials on them.
We study a specific class of deformations of curve singularities: the case when the singular point splits to several ones, such that the total $δ$ invariant is preserved. These are also known as equi-normalizable or equi-generic deformations. We restrict primarily to the deformations of singularities with smooth branches. A natural invariant of the singular type is introduced: the dual graph. It imposes severe restrictions on the possible collisions/deformations. And allows to prove some bounds on the variation of classical invariants in equi-normalizable families. We consider in details defor…
We study equivariant deformations of singular curves with an action of a finite flat group scheme, using a simplified version of Illusie's equivariant cotangent complex. We apply these methods in a special case which is relevant for the study of the stable reduction of three point covers.
We are interested in obstructions to the FIRST order deformation of a pair of a smooth hypersurface $f_0$ and a smooth curve $C_0$ contained in $f_0$. In the first half of the paper, we give necessary conditions for the pair to deform in the first order. In particular, for a rational curve $C_0$, this necessary condition is $$H^1(N_{C_0}f_0(1))=0.$$ In the second half, we apply the necessary conditions from the first half of the paper to study the geometry of smooth curves in hypersurfaces. The main application is for the case where $C_0$ is a rational curve.
A formula for the dimension of the smoothing component of a $3$-dimensional isolated Cohen--Macaulay singularity is shown. We apply this formula for a $1$-convex threefold with a connected exceptional curve which is blown down to a terminal Gorenstein singularity.
We compare the count of (0,2)-deformation moduli fields for N=(2,2) conformal field theories on orbifolds and sigma-models on resolutions of the orbifold. The latter involves counting deformations of the tangent sheaf. We see there is generally a discrepancy which is expected to be explained by worldsheet instanton corrections coming from rational curves in the orbifold resolution. We analyze the rational curves on the resolution to determine such corrections and discover that irreducible toric rational curves account for some, but not all, of the discrepancy. In particular, this proves that t…
We use a knot invariant, namely the Tristram--Levine signature to study deformations of singular points of plane curves. We find a bound on the sum of M numbers over all singularities of a generic fiber in terms of the M number of the singularity at the central fiber and some topological data.
We study the deformation theory of rational curves on primitive symplectic varieties and show that if the rational curves cover a divisor, then, as in the smooth case, they deform along their Hodge locus in the universal locally trivial deformation. As applications, we extend Markman's deformation invariance of prime exceptional divisors along their Hodge locus to this singular framework and provide existence results for uniruled ample divisors on primitive symplectic varieties which are locally trivial deformations of any moduli space of semistable objects on a projective $K3$ or fibers of th…
We compute the dimension of the tangent space to, and the Krull dimension of the pro-representable hull of two deformation functors. The first one is the ``algebraic'' deformation functor of an ordinary curve X over a field of positive charateristic with prescribed action of a finite group G, and the data are computed in terms of the ramification behaviour of X -> G\X. The second one is the ``analytic'' deformation functor of a fixed embedding of a finitely generated discrete group N in PGL(2,K) over a non-archimedean valued field K, and the data are computed in terms of the Bass-Serre represe…
This is the paper as published. The topology of a complex plane curve singularity with real branches is deduced from any real deformation having delta crossings. An example of the computation of the global geometric monodromy of a polynomial mapping is added.
We consider log deformations of affine surfaces with fibrations by the affine lines. Such a fibration is of affine type (resp. of complete type) if the base curve of the fibration is an affine curve (resp. a complete curve). The case of affine type is mainly treated in the article.
In this article, we study the Hilbert scheme of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. We prove the existence of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$ for which there exist infinitesimal deformations of the curve that do not induce deformations of the associated reduced scheme. We show that such infinitesimal deformations contribute to the non-reducedness of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We introduce the notion of extension of curves and prove that such infinitesimal deformations (such that the associated reduced scheme does not deform) are inherited by the extended c…
We apply Heegaard Floer homology to study deformations of singularities of plane algebraic curves. Our main result provides an obstruction to the existence of a deformation between two singularities. Generalizations include the case of multiple singularities. The obstruction is formulated in terms of a semicontinuity property for semigroups associated to the singularities.
We apply the known results on the Galois module structure of the sheaf of polydifferentials in order to study the dimension of the tangent space of the deformation functor of curves with automorphisms. We are able to find the dimension for the case of weakly ramified covers and for the case of the action of a cyclic group of order $p^v$.
Given a finite p-group G acting on a smooth projective curve X over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p, the dimension of the tangent space of the associated equivariant deformation functor is equal to the dimension of the space of coinvariants of G acting on the space V of global holomorphic quadratic differentials on X. We apply known results about the Galois module structure of Riemann-Roch spaces to compute this dimension when G is cyclic or when the action of G on X is weakly ramified. Moreover we determine certain subrepresentations of V, called p-rank representations.
We study deformations of rational curves and their singularities in positive characteristic. We use this to prove that if a smooth and proper surface in positive characteristic $p$ is dominated by a family of rational curves such that one member has all $δ$-invariants (resp. Jacobian numbers) strictly less than $(p-1)/2$ (resp. $p$), then the surface has negative Kodaira dimension. We also prove similar, but weaker results hold for higher dimensional varieties. Moreover, we show by example that our result is in some sense optimal. On our way, we obtain a sufficient criterion in terms of Jacobi…
