The theory of massive photons in the presence of axions is studied as the effective theory describing the electromagnetic response of semimetals when a particular quartic fermionic pairing perturbation triggers the formation of charged chiral condensates, giving rise to an axionic superconductor. We investigate corrections to the Yukawa-like potential mediated by massive photons due to axion excitations up to one-loop order and compute the modifications of the London penetration length.
We explore the dynamics of boson stars in the presence of axionic couplings through nonlinear evolutions of Einstein's field equations. We show that, for large axionic couplings, isolated boson stars become unstable, and decay via a large burst of electromagnetic radiation, becoming less massive and more dilute. Our full nonlinear results are in good agreement with flat-space estimates for the critical couplings. We then consider head-on collisions of sub-critical boson stars and study the electromagnetic and gravitational signal. Boson stars cluster around the critical point via interactions,…
Analytical functions for the propagators of QCD, including a set of chiral quarks, are derived by a one-loop massive expansion in the Landau gauge, and are studied in Minkowski space, yielding a direct proof of positivity violation and confinement from first principles. Complex conjugated poles are found for the gluon propagator.
In the first part of this paper, we extend the d-dimensional unitarity cut method of hep-ph/0609191 to cases with massive propagators. We present formulas for integral reduction with which one can obtain coefficients of all pentagon, box, triangle and massive bubble integrals. In the second part of this paper, we present a detailed study of the phase space integration for unitarity cuts. We carry out spinor integration in generality and give algebraic expressions for coefficients, intended for automated evaluation.
A more general expression for the quark propagator including both chiral and diquark condensates has been derived by using energy projectors. This makes it possible to study the phase transition from hadron phase to color superconductivity phase in the moderate baryon density region by using Feynman diagrammatic method or Green-function method.
Mixed dark matter scenario can reconcile the COBE data and the observed large scale structure. So far the massive neutrino with a mass of a few eV has been the only discussed candidate for the hot dark matter component. We point out that the hadronic axion in the so-called hadronic axion window, f_a \sim 10^6 GeV, is a perfect candidate as hot dark matter within the mixed dark matter scenario. The current limits on the hadronic axion are summarized. The most promising methods to verify the hadronic axion in this window are the resonant absorption of almost-monochromatic solar axions from M1 tr…
Considering a QCD chiral symmetry breaking model where the gap equation contains an effective confining propagator and a dressed gluon propagator with a dynamically generated mass, we verify that the chiral symmetry is restored for a large number of quarks $n_{f}\approx 7-13$. We discuss the uncertainty in the results, that is related to the determination of the string tension ($K_{F}$), appearing in the confining propagator, and the effective gluon mass ($m_{g}$) at large $n_{f}$.
The off-shell two-loop correction to the massive quark propagator in an arbitrary covariant gauge is calculated and results for the bare and renormalized propagator are presented. The calculations were performed by means of a set of new generalized recurrence relations proposed recently by one of the authors. From the position of the pole of the renormalized propagator we obtain the relationship between the pole mass and the \bar{MS} mass. This relation confirms the known result by Gray et al.. The bare amplitudes are given for an arbitrary gauge group and for arbitrary space-time dimensions.
We report on our study of the infrared gluon propagator for SU(2) lattice gauge theory using large lattice volumes. The observed massive behavior is discussed from the point of view of analytic predictions for the zero-temperature case. Such a behavior is still present as the temperature is switched on, but manifests itself differently in the electric and magnetic channels.
We study the low-momentum behaviour of Yang-Mills propagators obtained from Landau-gauge Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSE) in the PT-BFM scheme. We compare the ghost propagator numerical results with the analytical ones obtained by analyzing the low-momentum behaviour of the ghost propagator DSE in Landau gauge, assuming for the truncation a constant ghost-gluon vertex and a simple model for a massive gluon propagator. The asymptotic expression obtained for the regular or decoupling ghost dressing function up to the order ${\cal O}(q^2)$ is proven to fit pretty well the numerical PT-BFM results.…
Chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is studied introducing a confining effective propagator, as proposed recently by Cornwall, and considering the effect of dynamically massive gluons. The effective confining propagator has the form $1/(k^2+m^2)^2$ and we study the bifurcation equation finding limits on the parameter $m$ below which a satisfactory fermion mass solution is generated. Since the coupling constant and gluon propagator are damped in the infrared, due to the presence of a dynamical gluon mass, the major part of the chiral breaking is only due to the confining propagator and related to t…
The interpretation of the Landau gauge lattice gluon propagator as a massive type bosonic propagator is investigated. Three different scenarios are discussed: i) an infrared constant gluon mass; ii) an ultraviolet constant gluon mass; iii) a momentum dependent mass. We find that the infrared data can be associated with a massive propagator up to momenta $\sim 500$ MeV, with a constant gluon mass of 723(11) MeV, if one excludes the zero momentum gluon propagator from the analysis, or 648(7) MeV, if the zero momentum gluon propagator is included in the data sets. The ultraviolet lattice data is …
The infrared behavior of the quark propagator is studied at one loop and in the Landau gauge ($ξ=0$) using the screened massive expansion of full QCD and three different resummation schemes for the quark self-energy. The shift of the expansion point of perturbation theory, which defines the screened expansion, together with a non-standard renormalization of the bare parameters, proves sufficient to describe the dynamical generation of an infrared quark mass also in the chiral limit. Analytically, the scale for such a mass is set by a mass parameter $M$, whose value is fixed by a fit to the lat…
We study massive 1/2-spin particles in various external backgrounds keeping in mind applications to neutrino physics. We are mainly interested in massive Majorana (Weyl) fields. However, massive neutral Dirac particles are also considered. We formulate classical Lagrangian theory of the massive Weyl field in terms of Grassmann-odd two-component spinors. Then we construct the Hamiltonian formulation of such a theory, which turns out to be a theory with second-class constraints. Using this formulation we canonically quantize the massive free Weyl field. We derive propagators of the Weyl field an…
A universal behavior is predicted for ghost and gluon propagators in the infrared. The universal behavior is shown to be a signature of a one-loop approximation and emerges naturally by the massive expansion that predicts universal analytical functions for the inverse dressing functions that do not depend on any parameter or color number. By a scaling of units and by adding an integration constant, all lattice data, for different color numbers (and even quark content for the ghosts), collapse on the same universal curves predicted by the massive expansion.
The Green-function approach has been extended to the moderate baryon density region in the framework of an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, and the thermodynamic potential with both chiral and diquark condensates has been evaluated by using the massive quark propagator. The phase structure along the chemical potential direction has been investigated and the strong competition between the chiral and diquark condensate has been analyzed by investigating the influence of the diquark condensate on the sharp Fermi surface. The influence of the diquark condensate on the quark properties has been …
We derive the graviton propagator on the brane for theories with quasi-localized gravity. In these models the ordinary 4D graviton is replaced by a resonance in the spectrum of massive Kaluza-Klein modes, which can decay into the extra dimension. We find that the effects of the extra polarization in the massive graviton propagator is exactly cancelled by the bending of the brane due to the matter sources, up to small corrections proportional to the width of the resonance. Thus at intermediate scales the classic predictions of Einstein's gravity are reproduced in these models to arbitrary preci…
Inspired by the Goldstone equivalence gauge, we study the thermal corrections to an originally massive vector boson by checking the poles and branch cuts. We find that part of the Goldstone boson is spewed out from the longitudinal polarization, becoming a branch cut which can be approximated by the "quasi-poles" in the thermal environment. In this case, physical Goldstone boson somehow partly recovers. We also show the Feynmann rules for the "external legs" of these vector boson as well as the recovered Goldstone boson, expecting to simplify the vector boson participated process calculations …
We compute the master integrals containing 2 and 3 massive propagators entering the planar amplitudes of the 2-loop electroweak form factor. The masses of the $W$, $Z$ and Higgs bosons are assumed to be degenerate. This work is a continuation of our previous evaluation of master integrals containing at most 1 massive propagator. The 1/εpoles and the finite parts are computed exactly in terms of a {\it new} class of 1-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms of the variable x, with ε=2-D/2 and D the pace-time dimension. Since thresholds and pseudothresholds in s=\pm 4m^2 do appear in addition to the…
Most discussions of propagators in Lee-Wick theories focus on the presence of two massive complex conjugate poles in the propagator. We show that there is in fact only one pole near the physical region, or in another representation three pole-like structures with compensating extra poles. The latter modified Lehmann representation is useful caculationally and conceptually only if one includes the resonance structure in the spectral integral.
We study the Landau gauge gluon propagators in dense two-color QCD at quark chemical potential, $μ_q$, in the range from 0.5 to 1.0 GeV not reachable by the perturbative method at weak coupling. In order to take into account the non-perturbative effects, at tree level we use a massive Yang-Mills model for the Yang-Mills theory (or the Curci-Ferrari model) which has successfully described the lattice results of the gluon and ghost propagators in the Landau gauge. We couple quarks to this theory and compute the one-loop polarization effects in medium. The presence of the gluon mass significantly…
Analytical functions for the propagators of QCD, including a set of chiral quarks, are derived by a one-loop massive expansion in the Landau gauge, deep in the infrared. By analytic continuation, the spectral functions are studied in Minkowski space, yielding a direct proof of positivity violation and confinement from first principles. The dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry is described on the same footing of gluon mass generation, providing a unified picture. While dealing with the exact Lagrangian, the expansion is based on massive free-particle propagators, is safe in the infrared and is …
We compute the master integrals containing one massive propagator entering the two-loop electroweak form factor, i.e. the process f fbar --> X, where f fbar is an on-shell massless fermion pair and X is a singlet particle under SU(2)L x U(1)Y, such as a virtual gluon or an hypothetical Z'. The method used is that of the differential equation in the evolution variable x = -s/m^2, where s is the c.m. energy squared and m is the mass of the W or Z bosons (assumed to be degenerate). The 1/εpoles and the finite parts are computed exactly in terms of one-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms of the va…
Quark mass effects are clarified in the parton model approach to the transversely polarized nucleon structure function. The special propagator technique is employed to obtain manifestly gauge invariant results and extract the buried short-distance contributions inside the soft part after momentum factorization in the collinear expansion approach. A generalized massive special propagator for a massive quark is constructed. We identify the corresponding matrix elements of the transversely polarized structure function in deep inelastic scatterings by the massive special propagator technique.
We derive the propagator for a massive vector field on a de Sitter background of arbitrary dimension. This propagator is de Sitter invariant and possesses the proper flat spacetime and massless limits. Moreover, the retarded Green's function inferred from it produces the correct classical response to a test source. Our result is expressed in a tensor basis which is convenient for performing quantum field theory computations using dimensional regularization.
Within the Pauli-Villars regularization technique the fermion propagator is studied in the framework of Schwinger-Dyson equations in the Euclidean space. Making the generalization of Fukuda and Kugo proposals, the analytical continuation is performed into the timelike region of fourmomenta. The massive gauge boson kernel is considered and the fermion propagator pole structure is discussed in detail.
We consider $L$-loop two-point tadpole (watermelon) integral with arbitrary masses, regularized both dimensionally and analytically. We derive differential equation system and recurrence relations (shifts of dimension and denominator powers). Since the $L$-loop sunrise integral corresponds to the $(L+1)$-loop watermelon integral with one cut line, our results are equally applicable to the former. The obtained differential system has a Pfaffian form and is linear in dimension and analytic regularization parameters. In general case, the solutions of this system can be expressed in terms of the L…
The computational technique of $N$-fold Mellin-Barnes (MB) integrals, presented in a companion paper by the same authors, is used to derive sets of series representations of the massive one-loop conformal 3-point Feynman integral in various configurations. This shows the great simplicity and efficiency of the method in nonresonant cases (generic propagator powers) as well as some of its subtleties in the resonant ones (for unit propagator powers). We confirm certain results in the physics and mathematics literature and provide many new results, some of them dealing with the more general massiv…
Based on the Generalized Quantum Electrodynamics expression for the Podolsky propagator, which preserves gauge invariance for massive photons, we propose a model for the massive gluon propagator that reproduces well-known features of established strong-interaction models in the framework of the Dyson-Schwinger equation. By adjusting the Podolsky mass and the coupling strength we thus construct a model with simple analytical properties known from perturbative theory, yet well suited to describe a confining interaction. We obtain solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark at space-l…
The propagation of an off-shell spin-3/2 baryon is investigated in a consistent framework using projections corresponding to one irreducible spin-3/2 and two irreducible spin-1/2 representations arising from the usual spinor-vector representation of the spin-3/2 fields. Starting from the most general Lagrangian invariant under point transformations containing first-order derivatives only and imposing the constraint $γ_μψ^μ=0$, we eliminate one of the spin-1/2 contributions. The resulting propagator provides a clean separation of spin-3/2 proper and the one remaining spin-1/2 contribution. In a…
Theories with massive gravitons have peculiarity called the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity in that the massive theory propagator does not go to the massless graviton propagator in the zero graviton mass limit. This results in large deviation in Newtons law for massive graviton theories even when the graviton mass vanishes. We test the vDVZ in massive graviton theories for single graviton vertex process namely the gravitational radiation from a classical source. We calculate the gravitational radiation from compact binaries using the perturbative Feynman diagram method. We perform this …
We study the gauge covariance of the massive fermion propagator in three as well as four dimensional Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Starting from its value at the lowest order in perturbation theory, we evaluate a non-perturbative expression for it by means of its Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin (LKF) transformation. We compare the perturbative expansion of our findings with the known one loop results and observe perfect agreement upto a gauge parameter independent term, a difference permitted by the structure of the LKF transformations.
Using Bloch-Nordsieck approximation fermion propagator in 3-dimensional gauge theory with topological mass is studied. Infrared divergence of Chern-Simon term is soft, which modifies anomalous dimension. In unquenched QCD with 2-component spinor anomalous dimension has fractional value, where order parmeter is divergent.
In the present paper, we investigate the propagation of a massive spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ field, aiming at a direct application in hadronic models of the pion-nucleon ($πN$) interaction. Suitable expressions for the contributions to the standard invariant amplitudes $A$ and $B$ are derived, applicable in the general case of isospin decomposition. We first deal with the details of the lengthy calculation involving the Rarita-Schwinger propagator and confirm the validity of the expressions which had appeared in the literature in the early 1970s. We subsequently derive the corresponding contributions …
A generic prediction of string theory is the existence of many axion fields. It has recently been argued that many of these fields should be light and, like the well known QCD axion, lead to observable cosmological consequences. In this paper we study in detail the effect of the so-called string axiverse on large scale structure, focusing on the morphology and evolution of density perturbations, anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background and weak gravitational lensing of distant galaxies. We quantify specific effects that will arise from the presence of the axionic fields and highlight po…
Three decades of work on the quantum field equations of pure Yang-Mills theory have distilled two families of solutions in Landau gauge. Both coincide for high (Euclidean) momentum with known perturbation theory, and both predict an infrared suppressed transverse gluon propagator, but whereas the solution known as "scaling" features an infrared power law for the gluon and ghost propagators, the "massive" solution rather describes the gluon as a vector boson that features a finite Debye screening mass. In this work we examine the gauge dependence of these solutions by adopting stochastic quanti…
The masslessness of gluons due to gauge invariance appears to be contradictory with the observed massive structures of hadrons. As a dual process of gauge transformation, we have to fix the gauge to quantize the gluons in order to get propagators. The contradictory picture between gauge invariance and massive gluon propagation with vacuum condensates can be overcome by introducing generalized $θ$ vacuum composed of curved gauge slices. On the curved gauge slices the gluon propagator turns out to be dependent on the curvature and in maximally symmetric space the curvature plays the role of mass…
We calculate massive 5-propagator 2-loop integrals for operator matrix elements in the light-cone expansion, using Mellin-Barnes techniques and representations through generalized hypergeometric functions.
We derive recurrence relations for the calculation of multiloop sunset-type diagrams with large powers of massive propagators. The technique is formulated in configuration space and exploits the explicit form of the massive propagator raised to a given power. We write down and evaluate a convenient set of basis integrals. The method is well suited for a numerical evaluation of this class of diagrams. We give explicit analytical formulae for the basis integrals in the asymptotic regime.
Analytical properties of the photon propagator in QED3 in the N^1-approximation are considered. It is noticed that in given approximation if the dynamical fermions mass is nonzero this propagator has a single pole at the point k^2=0 and a branch point at k^2=-4m^2 (m is the fermion mass). When m=0, the propagator gets the pole at the spacelike domain of the variable k^2. It witnesses the unstability of the state conforming to the photon and leads to the screening of the source field at r speeds to infinity. The approximation by the rational function of the photon propagator containing the vacu…
Based on the self-consistent scheme beyond mean-field approximation in the large $N_c$ expansion, including current quark mass explicitly, a general scheme of SU(2) NJL model is developed. To ensure the quark self-energy expanded in the proper order of $N_c$, an approximate internal meson propagator is deduced, which is in order of $O(1/N_c)$. In our scheme, adopting the method of external momentum expansion, all the Feynman diagrams are calculated in a unified way by only expanding the quark propagator. Our numerical results show, that different from the mean field approximation in which the …
We revisit the massive Yang-Mills approach to implement axial-/vector mesons into the chiral pion Lagrangian. Employing the non-linear realization of chiral symmetry, we compute vector and axial-vector spectral functions. This includes, for the first time, a resummation of the $ρ$ propagator in the $a_1$ selfenergy while maintaining a partially conserved axial-vector current (PCAC). A realistic $ρ$ propagator, combined with a recent idea of a chirally invariant continuum in the vector and axial-vector channels, turns out be critical to obtain a quantitative description of hadronic $τ$-decay da…
We determine the master integrals for vertex and propagator diagrams that appear in effective field theories containing heavy fields. The integrals involve at least one heavy line, and the standard lines include an arbitrary mass scale. The evaluation is done analytically with modern techniques. We employ the methods of differential equations and dimensional recurrence relations to evaluate said integrals up to two-loop order.
We study the electron propagator in quantum electrodynamics in lower dimensions. In the case of free electrons, it is well known that the propagator in momentum space takes the simple form $S_F(p)=1/(γ\cdot p-m)$. In the presence of external electromagnetic fields, electron asymptotic states are no longer plane-waves, and hence the propagator in the basis of momentum eigenstates has a more intricate form. Nevertheless, in the basis of the eigenfunctions of the operator $(γ\cdot Π)^2$, where $Π_μ$ is the canonical momentum operator, it acquires the free form $S_F(p)=1/(γ\cdot \bar{p}-m)$ where …
