Inspired by the Goldstone equivalence gauge, we study the thermal corrections to an originally massive vector boson by checking the poles and branch cuts. We find that part of the Goldstone boson is spewed out from the longitudinal polarization, becoming a branch cut which can be approximated by the "quasi-poles" in the thermal environment. In this case, physical Goldstone boson somehow partly recovers. We also show the Feynmann rules for the "external legs" of these vector boson as well as the recovered Goldstone boson, expecting to simplify the vector boson participated process calculations by adopting the similar "tree-level" logic as in the zero temperature situation. Gauge boson mixing case are also discussed. Similar results are shown in other gauges, especially in the $R_ξ$ gauge.
We consider the phase diagram of QCD at very high baryon density and at zero temperature in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The state of matter at such high densities and low temperatures is believed to be a phase known as the color-flavor locked phase which breaks color and electromagnetic gauge invariance leaving a linear combination of them unbroken. Of the 9 quarks (three flavors and three colors), five are neutral under this unbroken generator and four are oppositely charged. In the presence of a magnetic field corresponding to the unbroken generator however, the properties of th…
Determinations of the gluon propagator in the continuum and in lattice simulations are compared. A systematic truncation procedure for the quark Dyson-Schwinger and bound state Bethe-Salpeter equations is described. The procedure ensures the flavour-octet axial-vector Ward identity is satisfied order-by-order, thereby guaranteeing the preservation of Goldstone's theorem; and identifies a mechanism that simultaneously ensures the absence of diquarks in QCD and their presence in QCD$^{N_c=2}$, where the colour singlet diquark is the ``baryon'' of the theory.
In this letter it is shown on general ground that there exist two qualitatively distinct solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark propagator in the case of non-zero current quark mass. One solution corresponds to the ``Nambu-Goldstone'' phase and the other one corresponds to the ``Wigner'' phase in the chiral limit.
As we demonstrate in a process independent way, in a nonlinear parameterization of the scalar sector of the standard model the Dyson summation of the Higgs self energy can be performed without violating the Ward Identities. This implies also the Goldstone boson equivalence theorem, in the limited range of its validity in effective field theories. This proves an earlier conjecture of Valencia and Willenbrock. Furthermore, the full Higgs propagator is independent of the gauge parameters. These results are consistent with the extension of the `gauge flip' formalism for the construction of gauge i…
Sigma models are exhibited which have tree amplitudes for Goldstone boson scattering that satisfy elastic unitarity exactly. The models have imaginary coupling constants and the scalar propagators have poles on the imaginary axis in the complex p^2 plane. They are equivalent to K-matrix models, which are ad hoc unitarizations of low energy theorems for Goldstone boson scattering that have been used recently to describe strong WW scattering. The sigma model formulation of the K-matrix models may be used to estimate directly the effect of strong WW scattering on low energy radiative corrections.
For a massive gauge theory with Higgs mechanism in a physical gauge, the longitudinal polarization of gauge bosons can be naturally identified as mixture of the goldstone component and a remnant gauge component that vanishes at the limit of zero mass, making the goldstone equivalence manifest. In light of this observation, we re-examine the Feynman rules of massive gauge theory by treating gauge fields and their corresponding goldstone fields as single objects, writing them uniformly as 5-component "vector" fields. The gauge group is taken to be $SU(2)_L$ to preserve custodial symmetry. We fin…
After imposing current conservation together with the Gauss law as initial conditions on the Abelian Nambu model, we prove that the resulting theory is equivalent to standard QED in the non-linear gauge $\left(A_{μ}A^{μ}-n^{2}M^{2}\right)=0$, to all orders in perturbation theory. We show this by writing both models in terms of the same variables, which produce identical Feynman rules for the interactions and propagators. A crucial point is to verify that the Faddeev-Popov ghosts arising from the gauge fixing procedure in the QED sector decouple to all orders. We verify this decoupling by follo…
We investigate spontaneous symmetry breaking within the linear sigma model with the SU(2)xU(1) internal symmetry at finite chemical potential, which was suggested as a model for kaon condensation in the CFL phase of dense quark matter. One-loop corrections to the scalar field effective potential as well as its propagator are calculated. Particular attention is paid to the type-II Goldstone boson that appears in the Bose--Einstein condensed phase. Furthermore, we show that the type-I Goldstone boson -- the superfluid phonon -- is allowed to decay due to the nonlinearity of its dispersion relati…
We present preliminary results for the chiral behavior of charged pseudo-Goldstone-boson masses and decay constants. These are obtained in simulations with N_f=2+1 flavors of tree-level, O(a)-improved Wilson sea quarks. In these simulations, mesons are composed of either valence quarks discretized in the same way as the sea quarks (unitary simulations) or of overlap valence quarks (mixed-action simulations). We find that the chiral behavior of the pseudoscalar meson masses in the mixed-action calculations cannot be explained with continuum, partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory. We sho…
We consider the version of QCD in Euclidean Landau gauge in which the restriction to the Gribov region is implemented by a local, renormalizable action. This action depends on the Gribov parameter $γ$, with dimensions of (mass)$^4$, whose value is fixed in terms of $Λ_{QCD}$, by the gap equation, known as the horizon condition, ${\p Γ\over \p γ} = 0$, where $Γ$ is the quantum effective action. The restriction to the Gribov region suppresses gluons in the infrared, which nicely explains why gluons are not in the physical spectrum, but this only makes makes more mysterious the origin of the long…
The existence of a Goldstone boson is demonstrated in chiral random matrix theory. After determining the effective coupling and calculating the scalar and pseudoscalar propagators, a random phase approximation summation reveals the massless pion and massive sigma modes expected whenever chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken.
The transition between the broken and unbroken phases of massive gauge theories, namely the rearrangement of longitudinal and Goldstone degrees of freedom that occurs at high energy, is not manifestly smooth in the standard formalism. The lack of smoothness concretely shows up as an anomalous growth with energy of the longitudinal polarization vectors, as they emerge in Feynman rules both for real on-shell external particles and for virtual particles from the decomposition of the gauge field propagator. This makes the characterization of Feynman amplitudes in the high-energy limit quite cumber…
The scalar-isoscalar propagator of the effective linear $σ$ model of meson dynamics is investigated with the help of an expansion in the number of the Goldstone bosons. A generic scenario is suggested for the temperature and density driven evolution of its pole in the second Riemann sheet. An extended temperature range, correlated with characteristic pole locations, is found where the phenomenon of threshold enhancement takes place in the corresponding spectral function.
The perturbative effective potential suffers infrared (IR) divergences in gauges with massless Goldstones in their minima (like Landau or Fermi gauges) but the problem can be fixed by a suitable resummation of the Goldstone propagators. When the potential minimum is generated radiatively, gauge-independence of the potential at the minimum also requires resummation and we demonstrate that the resummation that solves the IR problem also cures the gauge-dependence issue, showing this explicitly in the Abelian Higgs model in Fermi gauge. In the process we find an IR divergence (in the location of …
We investigate the critical scaling of the quark propagator of N_f=2 QCD close to the chiral phase transition at finite temperature. We argue that it is mandatory to take into account the back-reaction effects of pions and the sigma onto the quark to observe critical behavior beyond mean field. On condition of self-consistency of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation we extract the scaling behavior for the quark propagator analytically. Crucial in this respect is the correct pion dispersion relation when the critical temperature is approached from below. Our results are consistent with the known …
In the d=3 gluon mass problem in pure-glue non-Abelian $SU(N)$ gauge theory we pay particular attention to the observed (in Landau gauge) violation of positivity for the spectral function of the gluon propagator. This causes a large bulge in the propagator at small momentum. Mass is defined through $m^{-2}=Δ(p=0)$, where $Δ(p)$ is the scalar function for the gluon propagator in some chosen gauge, it is not a pole mass and is generally gauge-dependent, except in the gauge-invariant Pinch Technique (PT). We truncate the PT equations with a new method called the vertex paradigm that automatically…
The combined absence of physical realizations of the UA(1) symmetry possessed by the classical QCD action in the chiral limit, and of an isoscalar Goldstone boson associated with its spontaneous breakdown, has been dubbed the UA(1) problem. A formal resolution of this problem proposed by 't Hooft relies on instantons to provide a mass to the would-be Goldstone boson (eta '). An alternate scheme for the generation of an eta ' mass proposed by Kogut and Susskind derives from quark annihilation into gluons and a strong infrared singularity in the gluon propagator associated with confinement. We d…
We investigate the properties of scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons at finite temperature and quark chemical potential in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model coupled to the Polyakov loop (PNJL model) with the aim of taking into account features of both chiral symmetry breaking and deconfinement. The mesonic correlators are obtained by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in the RPA approximation with the Hartree (mean field) quark propagator at finite temperature and density. In the phase of broken chiral symmetry a narrower width for the sigma meson is obtained with respect to th…
We study the O(N) symmetric linear sigma model at finite temperature as the low-energy effective models of quantum chromodynamics(QCD) using the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis(CJT) effective action for composite operators. It has so far been claimed that the Nambu-Goldstone theorem is not satisfied at finite temperature in this framework unless the large N limit in the O(N) symmetry is taken. We show that this is not the case. The pion is always massless below the critical temperature, if one determines the propagator within the form such that the symmetry of the system is conserved, and defines th…
