Orthogonal polynomials $P_{n}(λ)$ are oscillating functions of $n$ as $n\to\infty$ for $λ$ in the absolutely continuous spectrum of the corresponding Jacobi operator $J$. We show that, irrespective of any specific assumptions on coefficients of the operator $J$, amplitude and phase factors in asymptotic formulas for $P_{n}(λ)$ are linked by certain universal relations found in the paper.
Our approach relies on a study of operators diagonalizing Jacobi operators. Diagonalizing operators are constructed in terms of orthogonal polynomials $P_{n}(λ)$. They act from the space $L^2 (\Bbb R)$ of functions into the space $\ell^2 ({\Bbb Z}_{+})$ of sequences. We consider such operators in a rather general setting and find necessary and sufficient conditions of their boundedness.

We provide a new closed form expression for the Geronimus polynomials on the unit circle and use it to obtain new results and formulas. Among our results is a universality result at an endpoint of an arc for polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Geronimus type weight on an arc of the unit circle. The key tool is a formula of McLaughlin for powers of a two-by-two matrix, which we use to derive convenient formulas for Geronimus polynomials.
Our goal is to find asymptotic formulas for orthonormal polynomials $P_{n}(z)$ with the recurrence coefficients slowly stabilizing as $n\to\infty$. To that end, we develop spectral theory of Jacobi operators with long-range coefficients and study the corresponding second order difference equation. We suggest an Ansatz for its solutions playing the role of the semiclassical Green-Liouville Ansatz for solutions of the Schrödinger equation. The formulas obtained for $P_{n}(z)$ as $n\to\infty$ generalize the classical Bernstein-Szegö asymptotic formulas.

We present determinantal formulas for families of exceptional $X_m$-Laguerre and exceptional $X_m$-Jacobi polynomials and also for exceptional $X_2$-Hermite polynomials. The formulas resemble Vandermonde determinants and use the zeros of the classical orthogonal polynomials.
We obtain an extension of the Christoffel--Darboux formula for matrix orthogonal polynomials with a generalized Hankel symmetry, including the Adler-van Moerbeke generalized orthogonal polynomials.
We describe an approach to universality limits for orthogonal polynomials on the real line which is completely local and uses only the boundary behavior of the Weyl m-function at the point. We show that bulk universality of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel holds for any point where the imaginary part of the m-function has a positive finite nontangential limit. This approach is based on studying a matrix version of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel and the realization that bulk universality for this kernel at a point is equivalent to the fact that the corresponding m-function has normal limits at th…
Let $p_n(x)$, $n=0,1,\dots$, be the orthogonal polynomials with respect to a given density $dμ(x)$. Furthermore, let $dν(x)$ be a density which arises from $dμ(x)$ by multiplication by a rational function in $x$. We prove a formula that expresses the Hankel determinants of moments of $dν(x)$ in terms of a determinant involving the orthogonal polynomials $p_n(x)$ and associated functions $q_n(x)=\int p_n(u) \,dμ(u)/(x-u)$. Uvarov's formula for the orthogonal polynomials with respect to $dν(x)$ is a corollary of our theorem. Our result generalises a Hankel determinant formula for the case where …
We present a compact formulation of the orthogonal Weingarten formula, with the traditional quantity $I(i_1,...,i_{2k}:j_1,...,j_{2k}) = \int_{O_n}u_{i_1j_1} ... u_{i_{2k}j_{2k}} du$ replaced by the more advanced quantity $I(a)=\int_{O_n}Πu_{ij}^{a_{ij}} du$, depending on a matrix of exponents $a\in M_n(\mathbb N)$. Among consequences, we establish a number of basic facts regarding the integrals $I(a)$: vanishing conditions, possible poles, asymptotic behavior.
A new recurrence relation for exceptional orthogonal polynomials is proposed, which holds for type 1, 2 and 3. As concrete examples, the recurrence relations are given for Xj-Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials in j = 1,2 case.
We give some structural formulas for the family of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials of size $2\times 2$ introduced by C. Calderón et al. in an earlier work, which are common eigenfunctions of a differential operator of hypergeometric type. Specifically, we give a Rodrigues formula that allows us to write this family of polynomials explicitly in terms of the classical Jacobi polynomials, and write, for the sequence of orthonormal polynomials, the three-term recurrence relation and the Christoffel-Darboux identity. We obtain a Pearson equation, which enables us to prove that the sequence of …
Necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of solutions of the functional equation appearing in the theory of classical orthogonal polynomials on lattices are stated. Moreover, the functional Rodrigues formula and a closed formula for the recurrence coefficients are presented.
The sine process is a rigid point process on the real line, which means that for almost all configurations $X$, the number of points in an interval $I = [-R,R]$ is determined by the points of $X$ outside of $I$. In addition, the points in $I$ are an orthogonal polynomial ensemble on $I$ with a weight function that is determined by the points in $X \setminus I$. We prove a universality result that in particular implies that the correlation kernel of the orthogonal polynomial ensemble tends to the sine kernel as the length $|I|=2R$ tends to infinity, thereby answering a question posed by A.I. Bu…
We consider orthogonal polynomials on the surface of a double cone or a hyperboloid of revolution, either finite or infinite in axis direction, and on the solid domain bounded by such a surface and, when the surface is finite, by hyperplanes at the two ends. On each domain a family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Gegebauer polynomials, is study and shown to share two characteristic properties of spherical harmonics: they are eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator with eigenvalues depending only on the polynomial degree, and they satisfy an addition formula that…
We study orthogonal polynomials associated with a continued fraction due to Hirschhorn. Hirschhorn's continued fraction contains as special cases the famous Rogers--Ramanujan continued fraction and two of Ramanujan's generalizations. The orthogonality measure of the set of polynomials obtained has an absolutely continuous component. We find generating functions, asymptotic formulas, orthogonality relations, and the Stieltjes transform of the measure. Using standard generating function techniques, we show how to obtain formulas for the convergents of Ramanujan's continued fractions, including a…
An alternative expression for the Christoffel--Darboux formula for multiple orthogonal polynomials of mixed type is derived from the $LU$ factorization of the moment matrix of a given measure and two sets of weights. We use the action of the generalized Jacobi matrix $J$, also responsible for the recurrence relations, on the linear forms and their duals to obtain the result.
This survey paper discusses the history of approximation formulas for n-th order derivatives by integrals involving orthogonal polynomials. There is a large but rather disconnected corpus of literature on such formulas. We give some results in greater generality than in the literature. Notably we unify the continuous and discrete case. We make many side remarks, for instance on wavelets, Mantica's Fourier-Bessel functions and Greville's minimum R_alpha formulas in connection with discrete smoothing.
We describe families of polynomials arising in the study of the universal central extensions of Lie algebras introduced by Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara, and Miwa in their work on the Landau-Lifshitz equations. Two of the families of polynomials we show satisfy certain forth order linear differential equations, are orthogonal and are not of classical type.
In this chapter are given necessary and sufficient conditions for the regularity of solutions of the functional equation appearing in the theory of classical orthogonal polynomials. In addition, we also present the functional Rodrigues formula and a closed formula for the recurrence coefficients. We finally used these results to solve some interesting research problems concerning characterization theorems.
We introduce two q-analogues of the 2D-Hermite polynomials which are functions of two complex variables. We derive explicit formulas, orthogonality relations, raising and lowering operator relations, generating functions, and Rodrigues formulas for both families. We also introduce a q-2D analogue of the disk polynomials (Zernike polynomials) and derive similar formulas for them as well including evaluating certain connection coefficients. Some of the generating functions may be related to Rogers-Ramanujan type identities.
Starting from degree N solutions of a time dependent Schroedinger-like equation for classical orthogonal polynomials, a linear matrix equation describing perturbations around the N zeros of the polynomial is derived. The matrix has remarkable Diophantine properties. Its eigenvalues are independent of the zeros. The corresponding eigenvectors provide the representations of the lower degree (0,1,...,N-1) polynomials in terms of the zeros of the degree N polynomial. The results are valid universally for all the classical orthogonal polynomials, including the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogo…
Multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to two weights on the step-line are considered. A connection between different dual spectral matrices, one banded (recursion matrix) and one Hessenberg, respectively, and the Gauss-Borel factorization of the moment matrix is given. It is shown a hidden freedom exhibited by the spectral system related to the multiple orthogonal polynomials. Pearson equations are discussed, a Laguerre-Freud matrix is considered, and differential equations for type I and II multiple orthogonal polynomials, as well as for the corresponding linear forms are given. The Ja…
Contiguous hypergeometric relations for semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are described as Christoffel and Geronimus transformations. Using the Christoffel-Geronimus-Uvarov formulas quasi-determinatal expressions for the shifted semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials are obtained.
