Cubic Pm-3n Nb3Sn0.92 superconductor (Tc ~ 16 K) was found to exhibit tetragonal instabilities at the superconducting state (T = 10 K). These instabilities are manifested through the appearance of reflections which are forbidden in the Pm-3n symmetry but are compatible with the P42/mmc structure which is observed in the Nb3Sn1-x system for higher Sn content at temperatures lower than ~ 43 K. Nevertheless, the low-temperature structure of Nb3Sn0.92 remains metrically fully cubic, as concluded from single crystal synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments. Subsequent application of external pressure amplifies the observed instabilities with a resulting pseudo-cubic - tetragonal transformation at P = 3 GPa at 10 K and this transition is energy driven, as concluded from ab initio calculations. The electronic structures of the corresponding phases are virtually identical and, therefore, the pseudo-cubic - tetragonal transformation does not influence significantly the underlying electronic interactions. Consequently, no anomalies in the behavior of the critical temperature, Tc, are expected at this pressure. However, anomalies in the upper critical field are anticipated during this transition, in analogy to the corresponding behavior observed during the cubic-tetragonal transformation in Nb3Sn1-x induced by increase in Sn content. Therefore targeted changes in composition could be used to enhance upper critical field of Nb3Sn1-x for specific extreme conditions of temperature and pressure.
Is superconductivity associated with a lowering or an increase of the kinetic energy of the charge carriers? Conventional BCS theory predicts that the kinetic energy of carriers increases in the transition from the normal to the superconducting state. However, substantial experimental evidence obtained in recent years indicates that in at least some superconductors the opposite occurs. Motivated in part by these experiments many novel mechanisms of superconductivity have recently been proposed where the transition to superconductivity is associated with a lowering of the kinetic energy of the …
Superconductors have the potential to revolutionize technology due to their ability to have zero electrical resistance. However, superconductor materials require either low temperatures or high pressures to function in a superconductive state. Thus, researchers are now on the search for the first-ever room temperature, ambient pressure superconductor. Yet, recent discoveries have only shown superconductors that work at low temperatures with ambient pressure or room temperature with high pressures. The region between these two extremes has not been identified due to the number of variables that…
We investigated pressure effects on transition temperature (Tc) of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 using a BeCu/NiCrAl hybrid-type clamped piston-cylinder cell. The Tc(onset) was 33K at 0.85 GPa. With increasing pressure, Tc(onset) gradually increased and reached 36.6 K at 2.03 GPa.
In this communication, we report the temperature dependence (3 to 300K) of the electrical resistivity of BiS2 based layered PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor at ambient and hydrostatic pressure of up to 3GPa. It is observed that Tc increases with pressure at the rate of dTc/dP=0.45/GPa for PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 compound. It is envisaged that one may increase the Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of recently discovered PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor by applying hydrostatic external or internal chemical pressure via suitable on site substitutions.
We report impact of hydrostatic pressure on the newly discovered BiS2 based superconductors. In last couple of years the new BiS2 based superconductor attracted great attention of the condensed matter physics community. These new layered BiS2-based compounds are very sensitive to the concentration of carriers doping and pressure that cause profound changes in their physical properties with appearance of superconductivity in the vicinity of their insulating/semiconducting state. The BiS2-based new compounds are expected to provide us with the next stage of exploring new superconductors and to d…
We report the pressure effect in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223) single crystal with a small amount of intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212). Their superconducting transition temperatures Tcs showed a domelike shape as a function of pressure, which showed a good agreement with the general relation between the carrier concentration and Tc. Our experimental results indicate that high pressure can induce effective carrier doping into the multilayered high-Tc cuprate superconductor
Hydrogen-based superconductors provide a route to the long-sought goal of room-temperature superconductivity, but the high pressures required to metallize these materials limit their immediate application. For example, carbonaceous sulfur hydride, the first room-temperature superconductor, can reach a critical temperature (Tc) of 288 K only at the extreme pressure of 267 GPa. The next recognized challenge is the realization of room-temperature superconductivity at significantly lower pressures. Here, we propose a strategy for the rational design of high-temperature superconductors at low press…
We report magnetization measurements under high hydrostatic pressure in the newly discovered pyrochlore superconductor RbOs_2O_6 (T_c\simeq6.3K at p=0). A pronounced and {\it positive} pressure effect (PE) on T_c with dT_c/dp =0.090(1)K/kbar was observed, whereas no PE on the magnetic penetration depth λwas detected. The relative pressure shift of T_c [ dlnT_c/dp \simeq 1.5%/kbar] is comparable with the highest values obtained for highly underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors. Our results suggest that RbOs_2O_6 is an adiabatic BCS-type superconductor.
We show that polycrystalline GeSb2Te4 in the fcc phase (f-GST), which is an insulator at low temperature at ambient pressure, becomes a superconductor at elevated pressures. Our study of the superconductor to insulator transition versus pressure at low temperatures reveals a second order quantum phase transition with linear scaling (critical exponent close to unity) of the transition temperature with the pressure above the critical zero-temperature pressure. In addition, we demonstrate that at higher pressures the f-GST goes through a structural phase transition via amorphization to bcc GST (b…
New TbFeAs(O,F) and DyFeAs(O,F) superconductors with critical temperatures Tc= 46 and 45 K and very high critical fields over 100 T have been prepared at 1100- 1150C and 10-12 GPa, demonstrating that high pressure may be used to synthesise late rare earth derivatives of the recently reported RFeAs(O,F) (R = La - Nd, Sm, Gd) high temperature superconductors.
We report specific-heat experiments under the influence of high pressure on a strongly underdoped Co-substituted BaFe2As2 single crystal. This allows us to study the phase diagram of this iron pnictide superconductor with a bulk thermodynamic method and pressure as a clean control parameter. The data show large specific-heat anomalies at the superconducting transition temperature, which proves the bulk nature of pressure-induced superconductivity. The transitions in the specific heat are sharper than in resistivity, which demonstrates the necessity of employing bulk thermodynamic methods to ex…
An iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$H$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.6) undergoes two antiferromagnetic (AF) phases upon H doping. We investigated the second AF phase ($x$=0.6) using NMR techniques under pressure. At pressures up to 2 GPa, the ground state is a spin-density-wave state with a large gap; however, the gap closes at 4.0 GPa, suggesting a pressure-induced quantum critical point. Interestingly, the gapped excitation coexists with gapless magnetic fluctuations at pressures between 2 and 4 GPa. This coexistence is attributable to the lift up of the $d_{xy}$ orbital to the Fermi level,…
The effect of pressure on the structural properties of lanthanum sesquicarbide La2C3 (T_c = 13 K) has been investigated at room temperature by angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The compound remains in the cubic Pu2C3-type structure at pressures up to at least 30 GPa. The corresponding equation of state parameters are reported and discussed in terms of phase stability of La2C3. Pressure-volume data of the impurity phase LaC2 are reported also for pressures up to 13 GPa.
In our desire to give a new suggestion for H-based superconductors experiments we present a theoretical framework for understanding the impact of an applied electric field on pressured hydride superconductors. We study a material at pressure $p$, when it possesses insulator-superconductor transition, at the respective superconducting critical temperature $T_{cr}$. The theory shows the applied electric field penetrates the material and forces the Cooper pairs to Bose condensate. If one applies an electric field and then increases the temperature, the theory predicts novel critical temperature $…
We investigate the external hydrostatic pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of new layered superconductors Bi4O4S3 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2. Though the Tc is found to have moderate decrease from 4.8 K to 4.3 K (dTconset/dP = -0.28 K/GPa) for Bi4O4S3 superconductor, the same increases from 4.6 K to 5 K (dTconset/dP = 0.44 K/GPa) upto 1.31 GPa followed by a sudden decrease from 5 K to 4.7 K upto 1.75 GPa for NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor. The variation of Tc in these systems may be correlated to increase or decrease of the charge carriers in the density of states under e…
A review of high-pressure studies on Fe-pnictide superconductors is given. The pressure effects on the magnetic and superconducting transitions are discussed for different classes of doped and undoped FeAs-compounds, ROFeAs (R = rare earth), AeFe2As2 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Ba), and AFeAs (A = Li, Na). Pressure tends to decrease the magnetic transition temperature in the undoped or only slightly doped compounds. The superconducting Tc increases with pressure for underdoped FeAs-pnictides, remains approximately constant for optimal doping, and decreases linearly in the overdoped range. The undoped LaOFeA…
We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure (0-1.97GPa) on the superconductivity of BiS2 based CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 compound. The CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor was synthesized by the solid state reaction route and the compound is crystallized in tetragonal P4/nmm space group. The studied compound shows superconductivity with transition temperature of 2.5K (Tconset) at ambient pressure, which has been enhanced to 8 K at applied pressure of 1.97 GPa. The observed normal resistivity exhibited semiconducting behavior. The data of normal state resistivity R(T) has been fitted by activation type equation…
A unique platform for investigating the correlation between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) states in high temperature superconductors is created by the discovery of alkaline iron selenide superconductors which are composed of an AFM insulating phase and a SC phase separated spatially. Our previous studies showed that pressure can fully suppress the superconductivity of ambient-pressure superconducting phase (SC-I) and AFM order simultaneously, then induce another superconducting phase (SC-II) at higher pressure. Consequently, the connection between the two superconducting…
The effect of pressure on the magnetic penetration depth $λ$ was tested in the hole-doped superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-d) and in the electron-doped one Sr0.9La0.1CuO2 by means of magnetization measurements. Whereas a large change of $λ$ was found in YBa2Cu3O(7-d), confirming the non-adiabatic character of the electron-phonon coupling in hole-doped superconductors, the same quantity is not affected by pressure in the electron-doped Sr0.9La0.1CuO2, suggesting a close similarity of the latter to conventional adiabatic BCS superconductors. The present results imply a remarkable difference between the…
Investigations of non-adiabatic effects by including vertex corrections in the standard Eliashberg theory show that high phonon frequency is unfavorable to superconductivity in regime of strong vertex correction. This means that it is hard to find high-transition-temperature superconductors in the compounds with light elements if the non-adiabatic effects are strong. The interplay interaction between non-adiabatic effect and Coulomb interaction makes the transition temperature of silane superconductor not so high as predicted by the standard Eliashberg theory.
In the present paper we report comprehensive analysis of the thermodynamic properties of novel hydrogen dominant potassium hydride superconductor (KH$_{6}$). Our computations are conducted within the Eliashberg theory which yields quantitative estimations of the most important thermodynamic properties of superconducting phase. In particular, we observe, that together with the increasing pressure all the thermodynamic properties decrease, e.g. $T_{C} \in \left< 72.91 , 55.50 \right>$ K for $p \in \left< 166 , 300 \right>$ GPa. It is predicted that such decreasing behavior corresponds to the dec…
We apply a method recently derived based on the extended Hubbard Hamiltonian and the BCS approach to obtain the superconducting critical temperature dependence with carrier density for the HgBaCuO compounds. We show that this procedure can be used to study pressure effect with the assumption that pressure changes the supercondutor gap. The results reproduce well the experimental data for the whole doping regime and the high and low pressure dependence.
We present an experimental study of the superconducting properties of NiBi3 as a function of pressure by means of resistivity and magnetization measurements and combine our results with DFT calculations of the band structure under pressure. We find a moderate suppression of the critical temperature Tc from ~ 4.1K to ~ 3K by pressures up to 2GPa. By taking into account the change of the band structure as a function of pressure, we argue that the decrease in Tc is consistent with conventional, electron-phonon-mediated BCS-type superconductivity.
The low-temperature conductance (G) characteristics between a normal metal and a clean superconductor (S) carrying a supercurrent $I_s$ parallel to the interface is theoretically investigated. Increasing $I_s$ causes lowering and broadening of (1) coherence peaks of s-wave S, and d-wave S at (100) contact, (2) midgap-states-induced zero-bias conductance peak for d-wave S at (110) contact, and (3) Andreev-reflection-induced enhancement of $G$ within the gap near the metallic-contact limit. Novel features found include a current-induced central peak and a three-humped structure at intermediate b…
We report the impact of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity and normal state resistivity of FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconductor. At the ambient pressure the FeTe0.5Se0.5 compound shows the superconducting transition temperature Tconset at above 13K and TcR=0 at 11.5K. We measure pressure dependent resistivity from 250K to 5K, which shows that the normal state resistivity increases initially for the applied pressures of up to 0.55GPa and then the same is decreased monotonically with increasing pressure of up to 1.97GPa. On the other hand the superconducting transition temperatures (Tconset an…
Pressure effects on a recently discovered BiS2-based superconductor Bi2(O,F)S2 (Tc = 5.1 K) were examined via two different methods; high pressure resistivity measurement and high pressure annealing. The effects of these two methods on the superconducting properties of Bi2(O,F)S2 were significantly different although in both methods hydrostatic pressure is applied to the sample by the cubic-anvil-type apparatus. In high pressure resistivity measurement, Tc linearly decreased at the rate of -1.2 K GPa-1. In contrast, the Tc of 5.1 K is maintained after high pressure annealing under 2 GPa and 47…
The magnetic and iron vacancy orders in superconducting (Tl,Rb)2Fe4Se5 single-crystals are investigated by using a high-pressure neutron diffraction technique. Similar to the temperature effect, the block antiferromagnetic order gradually decreases upon increasing pressure while the Fe vacancy superstructural order remains intact before its precipitous disappearance at the critical pressure Pc = 8.3 GPa. Combined with previously determined Pc for superconductivity, our phase diagram under pressure reveals the concurrence of the block AFM order, the iron vacancy order and superconductivity for …
We report a high-pressure transport study of the upper-critical field, $B_{c2}(T)$, of the topological superconductor Sr$_{0.15}$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ ($T_c = 3.0$ K). $B_{c2}(T)$ was measured for magnetic fields directed along two orthogonal directions, $a$ and $a^*$, in the trigonal basal plane. While superconductivity is rapidly suppressed at the critical pressure $p_c \sim 3.5$ GPa, the pronounced two-fold basal-plane anisotropy $B_{c2}^a/B_{c2}^{a^*} = 3.2$ at $T=0.3$ K, recently reported at ambient pressure (Pan et al., 2016), is reinforced and attains a value of $\sim 5$ at the highest pressure …
We use the two dimensional extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with the position of the attractive potential as a variable parameter with a BCS type approach to study the interplay between the superconductor transition temperature $T_c$ and hole content for high temperature superconductors. This novel method gives some insight on the range and intensity of the Cooper pair interaction and why different compounds have different values for their measured coherence lengths and it describes well the experimental results of the superconducting phase diagram $T_c \times n$. The calculations may also be used…
We report the pressure dependence of the structural parameters of the non-oxide perovskite superconductor MgCNi$_{3}$ up to 32 GPa using a diamond anvil cell and synchrotron x-rays at room temperature. The structure of the compound remains in the Pm-3m cubic symmetry throughout the pressure range. The bulk modulus $B_{0}=156.9\pm0.2$GPa with $B_{0}^{\prime}=9.8$obtained by fitting the pressure-volume data is in good agreement with theoretical calculations reported earlier. An anomalous shift of the (111) and (200) lines observed above 9 GPa indicates a possible local short range distortion tha…
A wide variety of superconducting oxides are used to test a general model of high pressure induced transition temperature (T c) changes. The T c 's vary from a low of 24 K to a high of 164 K. Although the model is capable of predicting both increases and decreases in T c with pressure, only superconductors that exhibit an increase are considered at this time. Predictions are made of the maximum T^ cP theo for 15 super-conductors as a function of their compressibilities. The theoretical results generally agree well with experiment. This model of T c as a function of pressure is derived from a r…
We have investigated the pressure dependence of ac and dc susceptibilities of the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si (Tc= 0.75 K) that coexists with antiferromagnetism (TN = 2.2 K). As hydrostatic pressure is increased, Tc first decreases rapidly, then rather slowly near the critical pressure Pc = 0.6 GPa and shows a stronger decrease again at higher pressures, where Pc is the pressure at which TN becomes zero. A transition width and a difference in the two transition temperatures defined in the form of structures in the out-of-phase component of ac susceptibilities also become small near Pc…
The evolution of the specific-heat anomaly in the overdoped range of a single crystal of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 has been studied under influence of pressure up to 10 GPa, using AC calorimetry in a Bridgman-type pressure cell. We show that the specific-heat jump as well as the bulk Tc are reduced with increasing pressure in accordance with a simple charge-transfer model. This new method enables us through pressure-induced charge transfer to study the doping dependence of the superconducting transition, as well as the evolution of the superconducting condensation energy on…
Tetragonal FeSe is a superconductor with a transition temperature Tc of 8 K and shows a huge enhancement of Tc with applying pressure. Tetragonal FeTe has a structure very analogous to superconducting FeSe, but does not show superconducting transition. We investigated the pressure effect of resistivity on FeTe. The resistivity at room temperature decreased with increasing pressure. An anomaly in resistivity around 80 K shifted towards a lower temperature with increasing pressure.
We propose a thermodynamic model of free energy expansion up to eighth order of magnetisation to describe the complex magnetic phase transitions in ferromagnetic superconductor UGe$_2$. The model successfully describes transitions between ordered phases which take place without changing of magnetic structure but only of magnetisation which is the case of UGe$_2$ where two magnetic phases with same structure but with different magnitude occur with decreasing of temperature. We consider the infuence of pressure on magnetic transitions in the simplest form of including it only in pressure depende…
The iron-based superconductor FeSe offers a unique possibility to study the interplay of superconductivity with purely nematic as well magnetic-nematic order by pressure (p) tuning. By measuring specific heat under p up to 2.36GPa, we study the multiple phases in FeSe using a thermodynamic probe. We conclude that superconductivity is bulk across the entire p range and competes with magnetism. Our analysis suggests that superconducting and magnetic fluctuations exist over a wide temperature range above the respective bulk transition temperatures, whenever magnetism is present. These observation…
Whereas dhcp La superconducts at ambient pressure with Tc = 5 K, the other trivalent d-electron metals Sc, Y, and Lu only superconduct if high pressures are applied. Earlier measurements of the pressure dependence of Tc for Sc and Lu metal are here extended to much higher pressures. Whereas Tc for Lu increases monotonically with pressure to 12.4 K at 174 GPa (1.74 Mbar). Tc for Sc reaches 19.6 K at 107 GPa, the 2nd highest value observed for any elemental superconductor. At higher pressures a phase transition occurs whereupon Tc drops to 8.31 K at 111 GPa. The Tc(P) dependences for Sc and Lu a…
Pressure dependence of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\mathrm{c}}$ in elemental aluminum was studied by means of the muon-spin rotation/relaxation technique. Pressure enhances the deviation of $B_{\mathrm{c}}(T)$ from the parabolic behavior, expected for a typical type-I superconductor, thus suggesting the weakening of the gap ratio $\langleα\rangle=\langle Δ\rangle/k_{\mathrm{B} }T_{\mathrm{c}}$ ($\langleΔ\rangle$ is the average value of the superconducting energy gap, $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ is the transition temperature and $k_{\mathrm{B}}$ is the Boltzmann constant). With the pressure incre…
Recently, several types of BiS2-based superconductor such as Bi4O4S3, REO1-xFxBiS2 (RE: rare earth) and Sr1-xLaxFBiS2 have been discovered. In this study, we have investigated the crystal structure and the superconducting properties for two kinds of polycrystalline samples (As-grown and high-pressure-annealed samples) of the BiS2-based superconductor CeO0.3F0.7BiS2. We found that both the As-grown and the high-pressure-annealed CeO0.3F0.7BiS2 samples show bulk superconductivity. A higher Tc was observed in the high-pressure-annealed sample. The Tc of CeO0.3F0.7BiS2 increased from Tczero = 2.7 …
A polycrystalline sample of FeSe, which adopts the tetragonal PbO-type structure (P4/nmm) at room temperature, has been prepared using solid state reaction. We have investigated pressure-induced structural changes in tetragonal FeSe at varying hydrostatic pressures up to 0.6 GPa in the orthorhombic (T = 50 K) and tetragonal (T = 190 K) phases using high resolution neutron powder diffraction. We report that the structure is quite compressible with a Bulk modulus around 31 GPa to 33 GPa and that the pressure response is anisotropic with a larger compressibility along the c-axis. Key bond angles …
A single band $t$-$U$-$J_1$-$J_2$ model is proposed as the minimum model to describe the superconductivity of the newly discovered iron-based superconductors $R(O_{1-x}F_x)FeAs$ and $RO_{1-x}FeAs$ ($R=La, Ce, Sm, Pr, Nd,Gd$). With the mean-field approach, it is found that the pairing occurs in the d-wave channel. In the likely parameter region of the real materials, by lowering temperature, the system enters firstly the $d_{xy}$ superconducting phase with $D_{4h}$-symmetry and then enters the time-reversal-symmetry-broken $d_{xy}+id_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting phase with $C_{4h}$-symmetry.
We report hydrostatic pressure study on the Rashba-type noncentrosymmetric superconduc- tors CaMSi3 (M= Ir, Pt). The temperature dependence of the resistivity for both compounds is well described by the conventional Bloch-Grüneisen formalism at each pressure. This fact suggests that electron-phonon scattering is dominant in these compounds. The superconducting critical temperature Tc decreases by pressure as \sim 0.2 K/GPa above 0.41 GPa to 2 GPa for both compounds. This behavior of Tc can be explained with a modest decrease of the density of states based on the conventional BCS theory.
We apply a method based on a BCS-type approach to the extended Hubbard model to deal with the YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} superconductor family under pressure. The parameters of the tight-binding band are taken from experiments, and the coupling strength U and V are estimated from the zero pressure phase diagram Tc X n_h, where n_h is the hole content and Tc the critical temperature. With the assumption that the pressure P modifies the magnitude V of the attractive potential besides n_h, we obtain a general expansion of Tc in terms of the pressure P, as Tc(P)=Tc(n_h(P),V(P)). With this we can distinguish…
Here we report a pressure-induced reemergence of superconductivity in recently discovered superconductor K2Mo3As3, which is the first experimental case observed in quasi-one-dimensional superconductors. We find that, after full suppression of the ambient-pressure superconducting (SC-I) state at 8.7 GPa, an intermediary non-superconducting state sets in and prevails to the pressure up to 18.2 GPa, however, above this pressure a new superconducting (SC-II) state appears unexpectedly. High pressure x-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate that the pressure-induced dramatic change of the lattice…
In the quasi-one-dimensional superconductor, Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-δ}$, we found that the lattice parameter, $a$ increased against pressure, starting at 2.0 GPa at approximately 300 K. This result suggests that the two-dimensional inter-conducting-chain interaction along the $a$ axis is most enhanced at approximately 2.0 GPa. To discuss the dimensionality, we also measured the resistance under magnetic fields up to 14 T, because magneto-resistance is induced when a system changes from one-dimensional to two-dimensional.
We propose that the observed splitting of the vortices in the cuprates into fractional vortices (partons) may be of static rather than of dynamic origin. This interpretation is backed by a study of a model with a dominant d-wave and subdominant s-wave pairing interaction. We find that the vortex may split into two partons, both of which carry one half of the magnetic flux quantum. The partons are hold together by a confining string along which the phase jumps approximately by pi and their equilibrium distance increases with lowering the energy difference epsilon between the pairing states. The…
Mono-arsenide CrAs, endures a helical anti-ferromagnetic order transition at~ 265 K under ambient pressure. Recently, pressure-induced-superconductivity was discovered vicinity to the helical anti-ferromagnetic order in CrAs[Wei Wu et al., Nature Communications 5, 5508 (2014).]. However, the size of crystal grown via tin flux method is as small as 1 mm in longest dimension. In this work, we report the single crystal growth of CrAs with size of 1 * 5 * 1 mm3 via chemical vapor transport method and its physical properties.
We report specific-heat and resistivity experiments performed in parallel in a Bridgman-type of pressure cell in order to investigate the nature of pressure-induced superconductivity in the iron pnictide compound CaFe2As2. The presence of a pronounced specific-heat anomaly at Tc reveals a bulk nature of the superconducting state. The thermodynamic transition temperature differs dramatically from the onset of the resistive transition. Our data indicates that superconductivity occurs in the vicinity of a crystallographic phase transition. We discuss the discrepancy between the two methods as cau…
We present a model of pressure effects of a two-band superconductor based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy with two order parameters. The parameters of the theory are pressure as well as temperature dependent. New pressure effects emerge as a result of the competition between the two bands. The theory then is applied to MgB2. We identify two possible scenaria regarding the fate of the two $σ$ subbands under pressure, depending on whether or not both subbands are above the Fermi energy at ambient pressure. The splitting of the two subbands is probably caused by the E2g distortion. If only one s…
We report on the structural phase transitions in the S doped FeSe superconductor by powder synchrotron X ray diffraction at high pressures up to 18.5 GPa under compression and decompression modes. In order to create high quasi hydrostatic pressures, diamond anvil cells filled with helium as a pressure transmitting medium were used. It was found that at ambient pressure and room temperature, S doped FeSe has a tetragonal structure. Under compression, in the region of 10 GPa, a phase transition from the tetragonal into the orthorhombic structure is observed, which persists up to 18.5 GPa. Our re…
It is argued that most of the RTSC hydrides are intrinsic hard type-II superconductors with strong pinning effects. The pinning centers are long columnar-like defects, with the radius of the order of the superconducting coherence length. The core and electromagnetic pinning are both equally operative, thus giving maximal pinning potential when vortices are oriented along the columnar axis. The theory predicts: (i) large critical currents, (ii) huge decrease of the temperature broadening of the resistance in magnetic field compared with standard superconductors, (iii) large magnetization hyster…
Identifying the superconducting (SC) gap structure of the iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTS's) remains a key issue for the understanding of superconductivity in these materials. In contrast to other unconventional superconductors, in the Fe-HTS's both $d$-wave and extended s-wave pairing symmetries are close in energy, with the latter believed to be generally favored over the former. Probing the proximity between these very different SC states and identifying experimental parameters that can tune them, are of central interest. Here we report high-pressure muon spin rotation e…
We have carried out a pressure study of the unconventional superconductor FeTe0.6Se0.4 up to 1.5 GPa by neutron scattering, resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. We have extracted the neutron spin resonance energy and the superconducting transition temperature as a function of applied pressure. Both increase with pressure up to a maximum at ~1.3 GPa. This analogous qualitative behavior is evidence for a correlation between these two fundamental parameters of unconventional superconductivity. However, Tc and the resonance energy do not scale linearly and thus a simple relationsh…
Through the solid state reaction method, we synthesized a new BiSe2-based superconductor Sr0:5La0:5FBiSe2 with superconducting transition temperature Tc?3.8 K. A strong diamagnetic signal below Tc in susceptibility ?(T) is observed indicating the bulk nature of superconductivity. Different to most BiS2-based compounds where superconductivity develops from a semiconducting-like normal state, the present compound exhibits a metallic behavior down to Tc. Under weak magnetic field or pressure, however, a remarkable crossover from metallic to insulating behaviors takes place around Tmin where the r…
Experiments investigating magnetic-field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition (HSIT) mostly focus on two-dimensional material systems where the transition and its proximate ground-state phases, often exhibit features that are seemingly at odds with the expected behavior. Here we present a complementary study of a three-dimensional pressure-packed amorphous indium-oxide (InOx) powder where granularity controls the HSIT. Above a low threshold pressure of ~0.2 GPa, vestiges of superconductivity are detected, although neither a true superconducting transition nor insulating behavior are obser…
The discovery of superconductivity of about 30 K in iron selenides with very large magnetic moments simulates the examination of completing orders. Here we report a finding of pressure- induced suppression of the superconducting transition temperature Tc and enhancement of the temperature of the resistance hump TH through charge transfer between two iron sites with different occupancies. The activation energy for the electric transport of the high-temperature resistance is observed to go to zero at a critical pressure of 8.7 GPa, at which superconductivity tends to disappear and the semiconduc…
