We study the massless irreducible representations of the Poincaré group in the six-dimensional Minkowski space. The Casimir operators are constructed and their eigenvalues are found. It is shown that the finite spin (helicity) representation is defined by two integer or half-integer numbers while the infinite spin representation is defined by the real parameter $μ^2$ and one integer or half-integer number.
Starting with an indecomposable Poincare module M_0 induced from a given irreducible Lorentz module we construct a free Poincare invariant gauge theory defined on the Minkowski space. The space of its gauge inequivalent solutions coincides with (in general, is closely related to) the starting point module M_0. We show that for a class of indecomposable Poincare modules the resulting theory is a Lagrangian gauge theory of the mixed-symmetry higher spin fields. The procedure is based on constructing the parent formulation of the theory. The Labastida formulation and the unfolded description of t…
It is noted that the Poincaré sphere for polarization optics contains the symmetries of the Lorentz group. The sphere is thus capable of describing the internal space-time symmetries dictated by Wigner's little groups. For massive particles, the little group is like the three-dimensional rotation group, while it is like the two-dimensional Euclidean group for massless particles. It is shown that the Poincaré sphere, in addition, has a symmetry parameter corresponding to reducing the particle mass from a positive value to zero. The Poincaré sphere thus the gives one unified picture of Wigner's …
A Poincaré covariant Lagrange anchor is found for the non-Lagrangian relativistic wave equations of Bargmann and Wigner describing free massless fields of spin $s>1/2$ in four-dimensional Minkowski space. By making use of this Lagrange anchor, we assign a symmetry to each conservation law and perform the path-integral quantization of the theory.
The study of phase-space constructions based on the properties of the $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra has been a very active area, mostly because of its possible applications in the phenomenology of Planck-scale-induced momentum dependence of the speed of ultrarelativistic particles. We here summarize, with emphasis on the emerging relativity of spacetime locality, some results relevant for this research program that were recently reported in arXiv:1006.2126 (PhysRevLett106,071301) arXiv:1102.4637 (PhysLettB700,150) and arXiv:1107.1724 .
We review recent progress on operator mixing in the light of the theory of canonical forms for linear systems of differential equations and, in particular, of the Poincaré-Dulac theorem. We show that the matrix $A(g) = -\frac{γ(g)}{β(g)} =\frac{γ_0}{β_0}\frac{1}{g} + \cdots $ determines which different cases of operator mixing can occur, and we review their classification. We derive a sufficient condition for $A(g)$ to be set in the one-loop exact form $A(g) = \frac{γ_0}{β_0}\frac{1}{g}$. Finally, we discuss the consequences of the unitarity requirement in massless QCD-like theories, and we de…
The formulation of quantum mechanics with a complex Hilbert space is equivalent to a formulation with a real Hilbert space and particular density matrix and observables. We study the real representations of the Poincare group, motivated by the fact that the localization of complex unitary representations of the Poincare group is incompatible with causality, Poincare covariance and energy positivity. We review the map from the complex to the real irreducible representations---finite-dimensional or unitary---of a Lie group on a Hilbert space. Then we show that all the finite-dimensional real rep…
Massive arbitrary spin supermultiplets and massless (scalar and spin one-half) supermultiplets of the N=2 Poincare superalgebra in three-dimensional flat space are considered. Both the integer spin and half-integer spin supermultiplets are studied. For such massive and massless supermultiplets, a formulation in terms of light-cone gauge unconstrained superfields defined in a momentum superspace is developed. For the supermultiplets under consideration a superspace first derivative representation for all cubic interaction vertices is obtained. A superspace representation for dynamical generator…
Following Pasterski-Shao-Strominger we construct a new basis of states in the single-particle Hilbert space of massless particles as a linear combination of standard Wigner states. Under Lorentz transformation the new basis states transform in the Unitary Principal Continuous Series representation. These states are obtained if we consider the little group of a null momentum \textit{direction} rather than a null momentum. The definition of the states in terms of the Wigner states makes it easier to study the action of space-time translation in this basis. We show by taking into account the effe…
In this work, we derive from first principles the relativistic wave equation of massless particles of arbitrary helicity. We start from unitary projective irreducible representations of the restricted Poincaré group. We define a weaker notion of localization and find, in particular, a position operator for any massless particle of arbitrary helicity. Therefore, having the position representation for these particles, we obtain the wave equations in this representation. We compare our results with previous findings in the literature.
Semiclassical chiral fermion models with Berry term are studied in a symplectic framework. In the free case, the system can be obtained from Souriau's model for a relativistic massless spinning particle by "enslaving" the spin. The Berry term is identified with the classical spin two-form of the latter model. The Souriau model carries a natural Poincaré symmetry that we highlight, but spin enslavement breaks the boost symmetry. However the relation between the models allows us to derive a Poincare symmetry of unconventional form for chiral fermions. Then we couple our system to an external ele…
The proof is presented that the Poincare symmetry determines the equations of motion for massless particles of any spin in 2n-dimensional spaces, which are linear in the momentum.
We make a simple observation that the massless continuous spin representations of the Poincaré group are not present in perturbative string theory constructions. This represents one of the very few model-independent low-energy consequences of these models.
Yang's theorem forbids the process $Z^0 \to 2γ$ in any Poincaré invariant theory if photons are bosons and their two-particle states transform under the Poincaré group in the standard way (under the standard coproduct of the Poincaré group). This is an important result as it does not depend on the assumptions of quantum field theory. Recent work on noncommutative geometry requires deforming the above coproduct by the Drinfel'd twist. We prove that $Z^0 \to 2γ$ is forbidden for the twisted coproduct as well. This result is also independent of the assumptions of quantum field theory. As an illus…
We determine the representations of the ``conformal'' group ${\bar{SO}}_0(2, n)$, the restriction of which on the ``Poincaré'' subgroup ${\bar{SO}}_0(1, n-1).T_n$ are unitary irreducible. We study their restrictions to the ``De Sitter'' subgroups ${\bar{SO}}_0(1, n)$ and ${\bar{SO}}_0(2, n-1)$ (they remain irreducible or decompose into a sum of two) and the contraction of the latter to ``Poincaré''. Then we discuss the notion of masslessness in $n$ dimensions and compare the situation for general $n$ with the well-known case of 4-dimensional space-time, showing the specificity of the latter.
We present 48 further examples, in addition to the 10 identified in [1], of ghost-and-tachyon-free critical cases of parity-conserving Poincaré gauge theories of gravity (PGT$^+$) that are also power-counting renormalizable (PCR). This is achieved by extending the range of critical cases considered. Of the new PCR theories, seven have 2 massless degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) in propagating modes and a massive $0^-$ or $2^-$ mode, eight have only 2 massless d.o.f., and 33 have only massive mode(s). We also clarify the treatment of nonpropagating modes in determining whether a theory is PCR.
The dynamical commutators of the light-front Poincaré algebra yield first order differential equations in the $p^+$ momenta for the interaction vertex operators. The homogeneous solution to the equation for the quartic vertex is studied. Consequences as regards the constructibility assumption of quartic higher spin amplitudes from cubic amplitudes are discussed. The existence of quartic contact interactions unrelated to cubic interactions by Poincaré symmetry indicates that the higher spin S-matrix is not constructible. Thus quartic amplitude based no-go results derived by BCFW recursion for M…
We construct unitary representations of (1,0) and (2,0) superconformal algebras in six dimensions by using superfields defined on harmonic superspaces with coset manifolds USp(2n)/[U(1)]^n, n=1,2. In the spirit of the AdS_7/CFT_6 correspondence massless conformal fields correspond to "supersingletons" in AdS_7. By tensoring them we produce all short representations corresponding to 1/2 and 1/4 BPS anti-de Sitter bulk states of which "massless bulk" representations are particular cases.
We use simple current techniques and their relation to orbifolds with discrete torsion for studying the (0,2) CFT/geometry duality with non-rational internal N=2 SCFTs. Explicit formulas for the charged spectra of heterotic SO(10) GUT models are computed in terms of their extended Poincaré polynomials and the complementary Poincaré polynomial which can be computed in terms of the elliptic genera. While non-BPS states contribute to the charged spectrum, their contributions can be determined also for non-rational cases. For model building, with generalizations to SU(5) and SM gauge groups, one c…
We study the minimal unitary representation (minrep) of SO(6,2) over an Hilbert space of functions of five variables, obtained by quantizing its quasiconformal realization. The minrep of SO(6,2), which coincides with the minrep of SO*(8) similarly constructed, corresponds to a massless conformal scalar field in six spacetime dimensions. There exists a family of "deformations" of the minrep of SO*(8) labeled by the spin t of an SU(2)_T subgroup of the little group SO(4) of lightlike vectors. These deformations labeled by t are positive energy unitary irreducible representations of SO*(8) that d…
We construct the covariant, spinor sets of relativistic wave equations for a massless field on the basis of the two copies of the R-deformed Heisenberg algebra. For the finite-dimensional representations of the algebra they give a universal description of the states with integer and half-integer helicity. The infinite-dimensional representations correspond formally to the massless states with fractional (real) helicity. The solutions of the latter type, however, break down the (3+1)$D$ Poincaré invariance to the (2+1)$D$ Poincaré invariance, and via a compactification on a circle a consistent …
The BRST approach is applied to the description of irreducible massless higher spins representations of the Poincare group in arbitrary dimensions. The total system of constraints in such theory includes both the first and the second class constraints. The corresponding nilpotent BRST charge contains terms up to the seventh degree in ghosts.
An action describing the dynamics of an infinite collection of massless integer spin fields with spin s=0,1,2,3, ...$\infty$ corresponding to totally symmetric Young tableaux representations of Poincare and anti-de Sitter groups is constructed, in any dimension d, in terms of two functions on a 2d-dimensional manifold. The action is represented by an integral localized on a 2d-1-dimensional hypersurface.
The theory of free relativistic fields is shown to arise in a unified manner from higher-order, configuration-space, irreducible representations of the Poincaré group. A de Sitter subalgebra, in the massive case, and a Poincaré subalgebra, in the massless case, of the enveloping algebra of the Poincaré group are the suitable higher-order polarizations. In particular, a simple group-theoretic derivation of the Dirac equation is given.
Twistor phase spaces are used to provide a general description of the dynamics of a finite number of directly interacting massless spinning particles forming a closed relativistic massive and spinning system with an internal structure. A Poincare invariant canonical quantization of the so obtained twistor phase space dynamics is performed.
It is proven that the Poincare symmetry determines equations of motion, which are for massless particles of any spin in d-dimensional spaces linear in the momentum. The proof is made only for even d and for fields with no gauge symmetry. We comment on a few examples. We pay attention only to spin degrees of freedom.
The lagrangian description of irreducible massless representations of the Poincare group with the corresponding Young tableaux having two rows along with some explicit examples including the notoph and Weyl tensor is given. For this purpose is used the method of the BRST constructions adopted to the systems of second class constraints by the construction of an auxiliary representations of the algebras of constraints in terms of Verma modules.
We investigate one of the consequences of the twisted Poincare symmetry. We derive the charge conservation law and show that the equivalence principle is satisfied in the canonical noncommutative spacetime. We applied the twisted Poincare symmetry to the Weinberg's analysis. To this end, we generalize our earlier construction of the twisted S matrix \cite{Bu}, which apply the noncommutativity to the fourier modes, to the massless fields of integer spins. The transformation formula for the twisted S matrix for the massless fields of integer spin has been obtained. For massless fields of spin 1,…
The second-order differential equation for a damped harmonic oscillator can be converted to two coupled first-order equations, with two two-by-two matrices leading to the group $Sp(2)$. It is shown that this oscillator system contains the essential features of Wigner's little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries of particles in the Lorentz-covariant world. The little groups are the subgroups of the Lorentz group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a given particle invariant. It is shown that the damping modes of the oscillator correspond to the little groups for mas…
We construct Wigner's continuous spin representations of the Poincaré algebra for massless particles in higher dimensions. The states are labeled both by the length of a space-like translation vector and the Dynkin indices of the {\it short little group} $SO(d-3)$, where $d$ is the space-time dimension. Continuous spin representations are in one-to-one correspondence with representations of the short little group. We also demonstrate how combinations of the bosonic and fermionic representations form supermultiplets of the super-Poincaré algebra. If the light-cone translations are nilpotent, th…
Extended particles are considered in terms of the fields on the Poincaré group. Dirac like wave equations for extended particles of any spin are defined on the various homogeneous spaces of the Poincaré group. Free fields of the spin 1/2 and 1 (Dirac and Maxwell fields) are considered in detail on the eight-dimensional homogeneous space, which is equivalent to a direct product of Minkowski spacetime and two-dimensional complex sphere. It is shown that a massless spin-1 field, corresponding to a photon field, should be defined within principal series representations of the Lorentz group. Intera…
There has been substantial calculational progress in the last few years for gauge theory amplitudes which involve massless four dimensional particles. One of the central ingredients in this has been the ability to keep precise track of the Poincare algebra quantum numbers of the particles involved. Technically, this is most easily done using the well-known four dimensional spinor helicity method. In this article a natural generalization to all dimensions higher than four is obtained based on a covariant version of the representation theory of the Poincare algebra. Covariant expressions for all…
We generalize Zwanziger's pairwise little group to include a boost subgroup. We do so by working in the celestial sphere representation of scattering amplitudes. We propose that due to late time soft photon and graviton exchanges, matter particles in the asymptotic states in massless QED and gravity transform under the Poincare group with an additional pair of pairwise celestial representations for each pair of matter particles. We demonstrate that the massless abelian and gravitational exponentiation theorems are consistent with the proposed pairwise Poincare transformation properties. For ma…
We solve the problem of constructing consistent first-order cross-interactions between spin-2 and spin-3 massless fields in flat spacetime of arbitrary dimension n > 3 and in such a way that the deformed gauge algebra is non-Abelian. No assumptions are made on the number of derivatives involved in the Lagrangian, except that it should be finite. Together with locality, we also impose manifest Poincare invariance, parity invariance and analyticity of the deformations in the coupling constants.
We construct massless infinite spin irreducible representations of the six-dimensional Poincaré group in the space of fields depending on twistor variables. It is shown that the massless infinite spin representation is realized on the two-twistor fields. We present a full set of equations of motion for two-twistor fields represented by the totally symmetric $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ rank $2s$ two-twistor spin-tensor and show that they carry massless infinite spin representations. A field twistor transform is constructed and infinite spin fields are found in the space-time formulation with an additional…
Massive and massless arbitrary integer spin fields propagating in four-dimensional flat space are studied. The massive and massless fields are treated by using a light-cone gauge helicity basis formalism. Cubic cross-interactions between massive and massless fields and cubic interactions between massive fields are investigated. We introduce a classification of such cubic interactions and using our classification we build all cubic interaction vertices. Realization of generators of the Poincare algebra on space of interacting fields is found. As a by-product, some illustrative examples of light…
Under the hypotheses of smoothness of the interactions in the coupling constant, locality, Poincare invariance, Lorentz covariance, and the preservation of the number of derivatives on each field in the Lagrangian of the interacting theory (the same number of derivatives like in the free Lagrangian), we prove that the only consistent interactions in D=11 among massless gravitini, a graviton, and a 3-form are described by N=1, D=11 SUGRA.
We construct an extension of the Poincare group which involves a mixture of internal and space-time supersymmetries. The resulting group is an extension of the superPoincare group with infinitely many generators which carry internal and space-time indices. It is a closed algebra since all Jacobi identities are satisfied and it has therefore explicit matrix representations. We investigate the massless case and construct the irreducible representations of the extended symmetry. They are divided into two sets, longitudinal and transversal representations. The transversal representations involve a…
N-extended massless arbitrary integer and half-integer spin supermultiplets in four dimensional flat space are studied in the framework of light-cone gauge formalism. For such multiplets, by using light-cone momentum superspace, we build unconstrained light-cone gauge superfield formulation. The superfield formulation is used to develop a superspace representation for all cubic interactions vertices of the N-extended massless supermultiplets. Our suitable treatment of the light-cone gauge superfields allows us to obtain attractively simple superspace representation for the cubic interaction ve…
Negative dimensional integration method (NDIM) is a technique which can be applied, with success, in usual covariant gauge calculations. We consider three two-loop diagrams: the scalar massless non-planar double-box with six propagators and the scalar pentabox in two cases, where six virtual particles have the same mass and in the case where all of them are massless. Our results are given in terms hypergeometric functions of Mandelstam variables and for arbitrary exponents of propagators and dimension $D$ as well.
Minimal unitary representation of SO*(8) = SO(6,2) realized over the Hilbert space of functions of five variables and its deformations labeled by the spin t of an SU(2) subgroup correspond to massless conformal fields in six dimensions as was shown in arXiv:1005.3580. In this paper we study the minimal unitary supermultiplet of OSp(8*|2N) with the even subgroup SO*(8) x USp(2N) and its deformations using quasiconformal methods. We show that the minimal unitary supermultiplet of OSp(8*|2N) admits deformations labeled uniquely by the spin t of an SU(2) subgroup of the little group SO(4) of light…
Under the hypotheses of smoothness of the interactions in the coupling constant, locality, Poincare invariance, Lorentz covariance, and the preservation of the number of derivatives on each field in the Lagrangian of the interacting theory (the same number of derivatives like in the free Lagrangian), we prove that in D=11 there are no cross-interactions between the graviton and the massless gravitino and also no self-interactions in the Rarita-Schwinger sector. A comparison with the case D=4 is briefly discussed.
The proof of the fact that there are no nontrivial, consistent cross-couplings that can be added between the Weyl graviton and the massless Rarita-Schwinger field is accomplished by means of a cohomological approach, based on the deformation of the solution to the master equation from the antifield-Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism. The procedure developed here relies on the assumptions of locality, smoothness, (background) Lorentz invariance, Poincare invariance, and preservation of the number of derivatives with respect to each field (the last hypothesis was made only in antighost n…
We give a simple and direct construction of a massless quantum field with arbitrary discrete helicity that satisfies Wightman axioms and the corresponding relativistic wave equation in the distributional sense. We underline the mathematical differences to massive models. The construction is based on the notion of massless free net (cf. Section 3) and the detailed analysis of covariant and massless canonical (Wigner) representations of the Poincare' group. A characteristic feature of massless models with nontrivial helicity is the fact that the fibre degrees of freedom of the covariant and cano…
A self-consistent exposition of the theory of tree-level superamplitudes of the 4d N=4 and 6d N=(1,1) maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories is provided. In 4d we work in non-chiral superspace and construct the superconformal and dual superconformal symmetry generators of the N=4 SYM theory using the non-chiral BCFW recursion to prove the latter. In 6d we provide a complete derivation of the standard and hidden symmetries of the tree-level superamplitudes of N=(1,1) SYM theory, again using the BCFW recursion to prove the dual conformal symmetry. Furthermore, we demonstrate that compact a…
We calculate six invariant terms of a gravitational field theory that nonlinearly realizes the Conformal/Poincaré quotient, and reduce to the known conformal Galileons in the limit when only the conformal mode is kept. Five of the six terms are regular coset terms, while the sixth is a Wess-Zumino (WZ) term that gives the well-known gravitational action for the trace anomaly. The obtained terms can be embedded in a quantum effective field theory (EFT) without spoiling their key features, although at a cost of certain fine tunings. The additional massive modes that appear in the EFT would have …
It has been shown that the massless irreducible representations of the Poincaré group with continuous spin can be obtained from a classical point particle action which admits a generalization to a conformally invariant string action. The continuous spin string action is quantized in the BRST formalism. We show that the vacuum carries a continuous spin representation of the Poincaré group and that the spectrum is ghost-free.
In the framework of light-cone gauge formulation, massless arbitrary spin N=1 supermultiplets in four-dimensional flat space are considered. We study both the integer (super)spin and half-integer (super)spin supermultiplets. For such supermultiplets, formulation in terms of unconstrained light-cone gauge superfields defined on chiral momentum superspace is used. Superfield representation for all cubic interaction vertices of the supermultiplets is obtained. Representation of the cubic vertices in terms of component fields is derived. Realization of relativistic symmetries of N=1 Poincare super…
Certain spontaneously broken gauge theories contain massless magnetic monopoles. These are realized classically as clouds of non-Abelian fields surrounding one or more massive monopoles. In order to gain a better understanding of these clouds, we study BPS solutions with four massive and six massless monopoles in an SU(6) gauge theory. We develop an algebraic procedure, based on the Nahm construction, that relates these solutions to previously known examples. Explicit implementation of this procedure for a number of limiting cases reveals that the six massless monopoles condense into four dist…
We present an alternative method of exploring the component structure of an integer super-helicity Y=s (for any integers) irreducible representation of the Super-Poincare group. We use it to derive the component action and the SUSY transformation laws. The effectiveness of this approach is based on the equations of motion and their properties, like Bianchi identities. These equations are generated by the superspace action when it is expressed in terms of prepotentials. For that reason we reproduce the superspace action for integer superspin, using unconstrained superfields. The appropriate, to…
We show that higher spin systems specific to cosmological spaces are subject to the same problems as models with Poincar'e limits. In particular, we analyse partially massless (PM) spin 2 and find that both its gravitational coupling and nonlinear extensions suffer from the usual [background- and self-coupling] difficulties: Consistent free field propagation does not extend beyond background Einstein geometries. Then, using conformal Weyl gravity (CG), which consists of relative ghost PM and graviton excitations, we find that avoiding graviton-ghosts restricts CG-generated PM self-couplings to…
